Lyrics Thread

Postby Corrian » Sun Dec 21, 2014 12:17 am

Alright, this is another thread that has been on my mind for a while. Here is a thread for us to, say, discuss lyrics from songs. Or just post lyrics that we like. I think it shall be mostly for posting lyrical lines you like, or a songs lyrics you like as a whole more so than actual lyrics discussion, except for when people are posting various lyric lines they like and lyrics they like and whatnot.

Also, if anyone has a suggestion for a better title name, please tell. I couldn't think of anything creative so I just went boring.

I shall start with a simple lyrical line right now, and post full song lyrics at another time. Too tired to do anything major.

We're so happy, even when we're smiling out of fear~Lorde

Edit: Adding in a disclaimer since sometimes it is hard to remember. Please do make sure that your lyrics are appropriate for the PG-13 forum rules. Thanks :)

And now we'll just wait until this is moved to Forum 7. If this ends up as lyric spam with little to no discussion at all, that is. Meanwhile:

Your power hungry sellin' soldiers

Ain't that fresh
I don't need your civil war

The What Are You Listening To? thread is pretty much spam and somehow hasn't been moved.

I plan to actually go out of my way to read every lyrical section that gets posted in this thread, though, unlike what I usually do other places.

I always like lyrics with this theme to them.

That particular song is from The Sunset Tree and is the first detailed account John gives of the abuse he suffered at the hands of his step father growing up. It's also pretty much the only album that's meant to be almost entirely in first person, pretty much everything else he writes is through other characters and narrators. He's a really good writer, he's direct when he needs to be and he also makes use of really good analogies, some of my favorites are on this album because it kind of hits home for me. This line from "This Year" is another good one:

"There will be feasting
And dancing
In Jerusalem next year
Because I am going to make it
Through this year
If it kills me"

Kind of simple on the surface, but it's also a reference to a fairly common Jewish phrase "this time next year in Jerusalem" (something to that effect). It's a common phrase that people say and never really mean and it lends more power to the song. John's an expert at balancing hopelessness with relentless optimism because that's kind of what got him through life. His sort of mantra is that while some of his lyrics are really sad, he's up there singing them and made it through. He's my favorite artist and songwriter ever because no one else really hits me that close to home. When I was growing up I felt he was pretty much the only person on the planet that was able to put to words what I was feeling.

I love lyrics, I think the way they are sang is very important as well.

For example:

That there, that's not me
I go where I please
I walk through walls
I float down the Liffey

I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here, I'm not here

In a little while
I'll be gone
The moment's already passed
Yeah, it's gone

I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here, I'm not here

Strobe lights and blown speakers
Fireworks and hurricanes

I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here, I'm not here....

And I was like...

Baby, baby, baby oooh
Like baby, baby, baby nooo
Like baby, baby, baby oooh
I thought you'd always be mine (mine)

Baby, baby, baby oooh
Like baby, baby, baby nooo
Like baby, baby, baby oooh
I thought you'd always be mine (mine)

- Exactly what it says on the can

I actually quite like this song: not many English-language pop songs with (relatively) clean lyrics... ;)

I love the way Thom sings these lyrics, as well as the lyrics themselves. It's just so real, and the first time I heard this song, I was astonished by the state of mind Thom must've been in to write this. Great post.

I am the stone that the builder refused
I am the visual, the inspiration
that made the lady sing the blues
I'm the spark that makes your idea bright
The same spark that light the dark so that you can know your left from your right.
I am the ballot in the box,
the bullet in your gun,
the inner glow that lets you know to call your brother son.
The story that's just begun,
The promise of what's to come,
And imma remain a soldier til' the war is won.

Tbh, this song is catchy af despite being ISIS. Same case goes for other things such as North Korea, obvious reasons to hate them but music is awesome and has that Communistic feeling to it such as "No Motherland without you"

You think we look pretty good together
You think my shoes are made of leather

But I'm a substitute for another guy
I look pretty tall but my heels are high
The simple things you see are all complicated
I look pretty young but I'm just backdated yeah

Substitute your lies for fact
I can see right through your plastic mac
I look all white but my dad was black
My fine looking suit is really made out of sack

I was born with a plastic spoon in my mouth
The north side of my town faced east and the east was facing south

And now you dare to look me in the eye
Crocodile tears are what you cry
If it's a genuine problem you won't try
To work it out at all you just pass it by pass it by

Substitute me for him
Substitute your coke for gin
Substitute you for my mom
At least I'll get my washing done

The Who - Substitute

One of my favourite Who songs lyrically.

I'm fearless, now hear this, I'm earless
And I'm peerless, that means I'm eyeless
Which means I'm tearless, which means my iris
Resides where my ears is, which means I'm blinded
But I'mma find it, I can feel its nearness
But I'mma veer so I don't come near
Like a chicken or a deer, but I remember
I'm not a listener or a seer so my windshield smear
Here you steer, I really shouldn't be behind this
Clearly cause my blindness; the windshield is menstrual/minstrel
The whole grill is roadkill, so trill and so sincere
Yeah, I'm both them there
Took both pills, when a bloke in a trench coat
And the locs in the chair had approached him here
Made it clear as a ghost, so a biter of the throats in the mirror
The writer of the quotes for the ghosts
Who supplier of the notes to the living
Riveting as Rosie, pockets full of posies
Given to the mother of the deceased
Awake and at war 'til I'm resting in peace

Lupe Fiasco - "Dumb It Down" verse 1
One of the most lyrically complex songs I've ever heard.

Baha, can you dig it like a spigot?
My guess is yes you can like can I kick it wicked
Liquor shot if you happy and you know it
As you clap your hands to the thick snot of a poet, flowin'
Grope a pen and I'm in cope hymen

Plug your trap or it's maximum exposure
Beats got family members askin' him for closure

When they tightly strap me in
give me lethal injection
just a few moments to live
no remorse for what I did
was for the betterment of man
I gave the utmost sacrifice
before more damage could be done
I took his life
THERE WAS A SPLIT SECOND OF SILENCE
when the dart punctured the skin
beady eyes rolled back in head
body dropped from the poison
THEY COULD INCOMPACITATE ME
BUT COULD NOT ERASE MY SNEER
I heard a thousand people screaming
While three billion others cheered
He was gone
and I would soon beeeeeee
Executed by the state
all appeals would be in vein
I was not criminally insane
in fact, I was found to be
an otherwise caring and respectable
member of society
a minor threat, except for that one that I killed
AS THE SEDATIVES TAKE EFFECT
I just smile and close my eyes
there's a priest kneeled next to me
he asks me if I realize
I was going straight to hell
and he thought that I should know
that the man I killed's replacement
planned this whole scenario
and what I did
had no significaaaaance

What justifies the homicide, when he dies
In his own iniquity, it's the
Master of the Mantis Rapture coming at ya
We have an APB on an MC Killer
Looks like the work of a master
Evidence indicates that his stature
Merciless like a terrorist hard to capture
The flow, changes like a chameleon
Plays like a friend, and stabs you like a dagger
This technique attacks the immune system
Disguised like a lie paralyzing the victim
You scream, as it enters your bloodstream

Oh father dear, I oft-times hear you speak of Erin's isle
Her lofty hills, her valleys green, her mountains rude and wild
They say she is a lovely land wherein a saint might dwell
So why did you abandon her, the reason to me tell.

Oh son, I loved my native land with energy and pride
Till a blight came o'er the praties; my sheep, my cattle died
My rent and taxes went unpaid, I could not them redeem
And that's the cruel reason why I left old Skibbereen.

Oh well do I remember that bleak December day
The landlord and the sheriff came to take us all away
They set my roof on fire with their cursed English spleen
I heaved a sigh and bade goodbye to dear old Skibbereen.

Your mother too, God rest her soul, fell on the stony ground
She fainted in her anguish seeing desolation 'round
She never rose but passed away from life to immortal dream
She found a quiet grave, me boy, in dear old Skibbereen.

And you were only two years old and feeble was your frame
I could not leave you with my friends for you bore your father's name
I wrapped you in my cóta mór in the dead of night unseen
I heaved a sigh and bade goodbye to dear old Skibbereen.

Oh father dear, the day will come when in answer to the call
All Irish men of freedom stern will rally one and all
I'll be the man to lead the band beneath the flag of green
And loud and high we'll raise the cry, Revenge for Skibbereen!

Moon River
Wider than a mile
I'm crossing you in style
Someday

Oh dream maker
You heartbreaker
Wherever you're going
I'm going your way

Two drifters
Off to see the world
There's such a lot of world
To see

We're after the same rainbow's end
Waiting 'round the bend
My huckleberry friend
Moon River and me
