Introduction
Sleet rain hits metal and leather alike, the former with a dull tinkle, almost like wind chimes in the rain, the latter sounding like the patter of tiny animals on the forest floor. Breath in the cool spring air floats like tiny clouds, swirling and mixing with the fetid air invaded by the scent of sweat, horse, and dampened canvas. The solitary noble knight looks out from under the visor of his helmet, scanning the forest ahead. He knows they lie in wait. But he also knows that they are foolish, cowardly men. The visor limits his vision, a solitary line of blurred light gracing his vision as he vainly tries to attempt to see ahead, as his horse moves forward with a light touch of heels to flesh. Seeing his movement forward, the rest of his house follows, the wet white stag's banner draping and harassing its owner, causing muted curses under fogged breath.
The slow jingles and clinks of armour and weapons colliding are clearly heard in the woods, the alien, human sound carrying through the still air. The sun can do little do cut through the mist brought up by late night rains and morning sun, as the lowland bog has continued to shelter these rogues for days. There. The knight raises his hand, and gestures to a nearby Captain, who in turn sights the sad, ragged, and torn yellow banner trying to stand proud in the centre of this camp. It was then that shouts of alarm and confusion in front of them began, men screaming and throwing furs, blankets, and whores from their beds as they scrambled to grab weapons. "Hommes, par le mars, en avant!" the shrill cry left the knight's lips, the deafening roar of horse hooves in their dozens accompanied by the jagged and disorganized yells of the men-at-arms around him surging forward like a primeval beast.
They closed on the tired encampment, sweeping aside its defenders. Bright red blood was brought forth from man-flesh, staining the ground and spraying through the air in a way that pleased the aesthetic nature of the knight. Somewhere a horse screamed, mingling its fear with the deafening noise and confusion of battle surging around him. He sighted a spearman desperately fighting off one of his soldiers, and wheeled his horse, bringing his sword back and then down forcefully, the castle forged steel breaking through the collar bone and sinewy neck tissue, jarring off of the sternum and then ripped free through the front of his chest. A tough jerk on the reigns brought there bit into his steed's teeth, and the beast pivoted, his visor then gave him the view of his quarry, lying slain. The battle had been a brief affair, the offending Lord's raiders quickly put to death. The knight dismounted, and knelt by the still warm body of his foe. Steam was rising from him, the warm skin slowly cooling with new rain that swept over the packed earthen floor of the forest. The knight crossed himself, murmuring in French a low prayer, wishing the man peace, in whatever afterlife he ascended or descended to. He stood, and placed an iron-stripped leather boot into the worn strirrup of his warhorse, and began barking at his vassals. They had already scrounged the few Francs they could, and seeing as the armour was of poor quality, turned, the company of soldiers riding away, the cacophony of hooves and jubilated murders fading on the slaughtered camp.
Summary
So now that you've read the intro hopefully you're a little more interested. Basically I have seen many RPs that cater to the medieval and fantasy crowd on NS, specifically a lot on P2M. However, ever since Evarii, I have wanted to create another, so with some help from fellow NSers I decided that a good choice would be Europe, in the late 13th century. Players will control their own noble houses, and their goal is eventually to rise to a level of wealth and power where they can challenge their regional rivals and declare themselves a Kingdom, and themselves King. As a Noble, you'll be expected to act like one, making arranged marriages, thinking strategically about the needs of your people, etc.
However, as Europe during this time is feudal, you'll also have a lot of control with regards to the daily life of your citizens. Taxing them, as well as raising troops, constructing fortifications, roads, or mills, for example will all help to increase your standing as well as wealth and power. But be warned, this will be under OP discretion, and watched.
Gameplay and Time Progression
The progression of time is obviously a major issue. As the IC progresses based on the dates posted by players to denote when their post occurs, as the IC will move forward. This means obviously that dignitaries moving from town to town, or from Lord to Lord, or even the movement of armies may be hindered. In such cases, the IC will move as needed. Obviously if we are flying through month after month this poses a challenge for those players that are not frequent posters, however seeing as most players are only to be immediately involved with NPC neighbours, this will likely offset any player-to-player interactions for the first two years roughly.
As for everything else a player has under their purview, its under their control. Should they do something stupid, say like raising levies during harvest season, they'll receive a TG from the OP explaining the issue and informing them that they should go over the problem and attempt to solve it in the IC. As for combat, we will be following a different style. Based on the armies, terrain, and leaders, OPs will make decisions as to the outcomes and casualties of each battle. Players can decide to create a separate thread and create the story of how such an outcome was achieved, or they may simply choose to write as GRRM often does, glossing over the battle and simply visiting the aftermath. As for other aspects, taxation and the raising of troops, the former is up to the player, but obviously heavy taxation on an agrarian populace is illa dvised and will make you more prone to an OP TG outlining an issue. There are two main kinds of troops, your household guard, which are %.05 of your population, and levies, %5 of your population. The househould guard are your finest warriors, your shock troops. Trust them to hold the line, or break an enemy's, to guard you and your family as well as important figures. Levies are your regular ground troops, mostly farmers with some military training called to arms in times of war. However, keep in mind that the longer the levies are in the field, the longer there is no manpower working your farms and lands.
