Deer breaks into house

GALLOWAY, New Jersey — Police say a deer burst through the front doors of a New Jersey home, darted through the residence and ransacked the master bathroom.

Galloway police received a 911 call at around 3:30 p.m. Saturday from a woman reporting that a deer ran through her house while she was putting sweet potatoes in the oven. The woman said she followed the deer into the back of the house and locked it in a bathroom.

Responding officers found the glass on the front storm door shattered. They also found the frame on the main door damaged, indicating that the deer muscled its way through two doors to enter the home.

After a brief standoff, police escorted the deer from the home and released it into the wild.

The bathroom was significantly damaged.

The deer didn't steal anything. All it did was destroy the bathroom. I guess it didn't like the design of the bathroom.

I live in the rural part of a rural suburb, and yet mere minutes from a shopping centre. I have to turn on the high beams leaving the (long dirt/gravel) driveway to shoo away the families of deer just hanging out and munching blackberry bushes.

I thought this was common. In Sweden every winter one expects to have a family of deer in the backyard so you put out food for them so this does not happen. But in all honesty it is more common for moose and reindeer to do this because most people do not forget to set out food for the deer but it happens occasionally.

I live in the US and deer around here are vermin and problematic. They cause a lot of accidents and loss of property around here. They need to be culled. They taste good.

And, honestly, who hasn't accidentally wrecked the bathroom a couple times? With those big antlers, and considering it was probably his first time using a toilet, the woman should be applauding him for not making a bigger mess.

In NZ our deer population is quite low and they usually stick to the deeper bush and scrub. Its mostly possums as road kill

In Sweden in winter in basically every store there is some deer food. Also in winter time the snow is sometimes up to 20 cm deep (around 10 inches I think) and if you live in northern Sweden it sometimes gets up to 1 m deep so the deer often go down to towns and cities where the snow is not so deep.

In northern PA along US Route 6 it was nothing to see dozens of deer on and near the road at the same time. In my experience this condition prevailed from Erie County in the west to Bradford County in the east.

So, having a deer anywhere at all is far from unusual. The news did not bother reporting accidents involving a car and a deer since they were so frequent. We did hear about cars hitting bears, though. That was in Potter County.

Now, up here in the Adirondacks, the news happens when a moose shows up at the mall.

Oh, there was one quirky news item back in PA, near Enterprise; a hunter was gored to death by his quarry, a wounded stag.

In winter deer are the least of your worries in Sweden especially if you live in the north. Moose cause tons of deaths and accidents, recently a moose rampaged through a small town and the police needed to come to secure the town. Often traffic gets stuck because reindeer herds like to cross the road and in the very north you may even have to worry about bears. Moose are the primary reasons people own guns in Sweden because of the danger of moose breaking in to your house or in small towns attacking the town seriously moose are dangerous.
