What were your nation's most notable civil rights issues?

Postby Chadtonia » Wed Nov 26, 2014 1:36 pm

Historically, what were your nation's most notable civil rights issues?

Optional additional related questions:

What agencies or persons or civil rights leaders were the most involved and/or the most influential in these issues?

How have these particular civil rights issues issues influenced your nation? Were changes made to National laws or local laws? Did these issues bring to light some underlying subtext issues? How has the government addressed these issues?

What were the methods used to bring these issues to public attention? Were protests used? If so, were these protests violent or non-violent? Were there cases of peaceful civil disobedience? Were there riots? Was there any military involvement? Were there court-cases?

What are/were the major political opinions of these issues? What are/were the major social opinions of these issues?

Why were these particular issues the most notable in relation to the civil rights within your nation?

Were the changes in policy, legal discourse, political agenda etc. minor, moderate, or major?

Generally it involved giving citizenship, full citizen rights, and equal rights to various species across the Holy Empire. Currently there is complete equality. Chances are, once we encounter another new species, or race as they are called, we will go through it once again until we are certain of their full sapience.

We still have some. Ban of the hijab in public, ban on most drugs, ban on smoking, etc. Of course the last two aren't important because they aren't human rights issues.

Nazis and fascists complain they have no rights in Skinia. What an utter fucking lie. They have all the freedom to spew their shit all they like but once they attack any of us, they're most often getting the holy snot beaten outta them.

Through out the entire nation has one thing on its mind: to what extent should drugs be legal?

Though cannabis is legal, there are still calls from the liberal, Drugz now, and Libertarian Parties for other soft and even hard drugs to be legal for recreation. Others like the green party wish for the cannabis tax and some regulations (no smoking zones) to be removed.

This was brought public attention through distribution at event from drugz now and blaze it 420 party events. Most protests involved the protesters getting high out side the house of representatives. The are mostly non-violent. Mostly.

Voting is still to this day outlawed, probably the biggest civil rights issue Olwe has... polling isn't outlawed, and according to a recent survey 65% of Olweans don't want us to change our policy on voting, so this will probably stay the same.

The right to keep and bear arms is upheld only to a certain extent in Olwe... civilians are only allowed one non-automatic firearm, and cannot legally use anything other than melee weapons in duels. In addition, crimes in which guns were involved (for example, a convenience-store robbery) are automatically punishable by death. People sometimes call for expanded gun rights in Olwe, but it is highly unlikely they will get them.

Drug rights are also an issue, because the Olwean government and culture tie them so closely to environmental policy. It is currently only legal to smoke indoors, within the confines of private residences or businesses constructed for the specific use of such products (for example, opium dens). This includes tobacco, marijuana, pipeweed (which is still favored by Hobbits, and is a different species of plant from tobacco), and opium. Meth and crack are illegal, period, no matter what. Even though the drug of choice for the vast majority of Olweans is Ecstasy, the anti-pollution measures interfering with the use of other drugs still rankles some people.

Religion is the largest issue of today. Recently the government has confined the practice of religion to the home and instituted state atheism under punishment of forced labor. This has upset immigrants in Ryaanistan who have come from countries where the practice of free religion was commonplace. Historically religion has always been a minor aspect of Ryaanistan. Ethnic Ryaanistanians have always been very science minded and naturalistic. It was not until after immigration in Ryaanistan became common that issues such as religion have started to spark tensions.

It's not really historical persay, we're having issues discerning the legal rights of Sunese-born Goyerans, people who are for all intents and purposes, Sunese citizens, but lack the legal definition of such because citizenship in the White Sun is tied to ethnicity, Goyerans, being of another ethnicity, aren't so clear in the process. They currently can't vote or hold office but the Imperial Diet is working on this issue with rapidity.

Goyerans being a Koreans analog.

Our nation has no civil rights issues, as far as we're concerned. Indeed, our nation is considered to be rather outstanding in terms of civil rights.

There are those, pretty much all of them outsiders, who consider our treatment of the criminally insane to be harsh, but our people believe that humane euthanasia is simply the logical method of dealing with them, for a being who cannot be reasoned with is simply a dangerous animal.

There are also some who consider that allowing the poor to starve to death in the streets is somehow wrong, but, well, those people are Communists, nobody here takes them seriously. Just look at how many MORE people are starving to death in the streets over in Commieland!

We don't really have civil rights issues in les Pays d'en Haut but 23% of our poplulation thinks slavery should be outlawed.

There is actually an organization who defends the rights of the slaves, the organization is named Rassemblement National Habitant des Pays d'en Haut pour les Droits des Esclaves Étrangers et Non-étrangers Effectuant un Travail Non-rémunéré (RNHPHDEENETN).

The RNHPHDEENETN organized a demonstration in the capital city of saint-Jérôme last month.

One of the ongoing civil-rights issues among Kawaiians involves treatment of those we call "Children of the Cute One". Kawaiian culture is fiercely traditional when it comes to the family, a throwback to ancient times when our forefathers practiced ancestor worship. A Kawaiian's ancestors are still venerated as intercessors between the Kawaiian and the Cute One, but according to tradition, only legitimate descendents can petition an ancestor. Kawaiians for whom there are no legitimate parents, i.e. orphans or "foundlings", cannot be adopted into a family because that would dishonor the family ancestors. As a result, they are raised in Church-run orphanages.

The upshot of this is that "Children of the Cute One" have long been thought of as second-class citizens by Kawaiians of "legitimate" ancestry. It's been a long struggle to convince the latter that the two groups are equal in the eyes of the Cute One. We've made great progress recently with the naming of the new head of the church, our Kalif. He himself is a Child of the Cute One, but nonetheless was named by the Prophet as his successor.

We have issues concerning about the right to play games other than Minecraft. The Social Democratic Party has proposed for video games equally good for brains like Civilization XII, Red Alert 8, Five Nights at Freddy's 10, Thoughtcrime (a FPS based on Nineteen-Eighty Four) to be unregulated and let people be exposed to more variants of games. They also propose for building dicks in Minecraft to be legal and ban operator-secret-police system in which OPs serve as secret police watching over player comments.
Other than that people also campaign for reduction of the power of the New People's Revolutionary Guide Committee, which approves candidates in order to let them become actually elected. No candidate can be put into power unless the NPRGC approves. People thinks this is not fair, and so campaigns for that NPRGC should be disbanded, and let the General People's Committee sort out all affairs.
