Abused woman disguises pizza order to call police

Postby Socialist Tera » Thu Oct 30, 2014 5:29 am

A woman called 911 and pretended to order a pizza to alert the police that her abusive boyfriend was assaulting her.

Reporting domestic violence is often easier said than done but one woman in the United States found a way to fool her abusive partner by disguising her call for help as a pizza order.

Keith Weisinger, who worked as a police dispatcher between 2004-2006, said that when he took the call he thought the woman on the other end of the line may have been playing a prank but fortunately he didn’t hang up.

"This call occurred almost 10 years ago," he told BuzzFeed News. "I worked the graveyard shift, 6pm–6am, and I remember this call being pretty late – close to midnight."

After noticing the woman's hurried responses Weisinger realised the pizza order was a coded call for help.

Cartoon illustrates domestic violence

According to the 911 operator here is how the conversation went down, as first posted on Reddit thread '911 Operators, what is the 1 call that you could never forget?':

"911, where is your emergency?"

"123 Main St [actual address not given]."

"Ok, what's going on there?"

"I'd like to order a pizza for delivery." (oh great, another prank call).

"Ma'am, you've reached 911"

"Yeah, I know. Can I have a large with half pepperoni, half mushroom and peppers?"

"Ummm…. I'm sorry, you know you've called 911 right?"

"Yeah, do you know how long it will be?"

"Ok, Ma'am, is everything ok over there? Do you have an emergency?"

"Yes, I do."

"…And you can't talk about it because there's someone in the room with you?" (moment of realization)

"Yes, that's correct. Do you know how long it will be?"

"I have an officer about a mile from your location. Are there any weapons in your house?"

"Nope."

"Can you stay on the phone with me?"

"Nope. See you soon, thanks"

Weisinger said he checked the history of the address and noticed it had domestic violence-related episodes in the past.

"The officer arrives and finds a couple, female was kind of banged up, and boyfriend was drunk," his Reddit post reveals.

"Officer arrests him after she explains that the boyfriend had been beating her for a while. I thought she was pretty clever to use that trick.

"Definitely one of the most memorable calls," he added.

While occasionally callers make an effort to meet the dispatchers who helped them through a distressing experience Weisinger, who now works as an environmental attorney, said he never found out what happened to the woman believed to be in her 30s.

"This is a part of the job most 911 dispatchers find frustrating. Beyond the immediate resolution – arrest, hospitalisation, etc – we rarely hear what happens to the people who call," he told BuzzFeed.

And while he is being hailed a hero, Weisinger says it was the woman caller's fast thinking that saved her.

"Whether she had thought of this trick before, or it just came to her she indicated the urgency of her situation without giving away the true purpose of her call."

Dame Quentin Bryce speaks out about domestic violence

In Australia one in three women will report an instance of physical or sexual abuse at one point in her life and in 2013 domestic violence was estimated to have cost the Australian economy $13.6 billion.

Research suggests the vast majority of abusive and violent behaviour occurs within the privacy of the home and is primarily committed by an intimate partner but a 2005 survey found that 64 per cent of women who experienced physical assault and 81 per cent of women who experienced sexual assault still did not report it to police.

The question is how do we stop domestic violence and abuse? It is a major issue in the world and still I feel it is not properly addressed. People who do want a solution are labelled as "insane feminists" and ignored. How do we tackle the problem? I think we need these 6 things:
1) Safe homes for women and children seeking to escape domestic violence, coordinated with educational programs for junior high and high school. Counseling for abuse victims.
2) A ready team of state workers who will help the women apply for assistance and food stamps.
3) A ready team of attorneys skilled in domestic abuse who can handle legal separations, child support payments, orders of protection, educate the victim on rights and responsibilities.
4) Judges who are willing to SENTENCE violent offenders to outpatient classes to work on anger management, rage and learning respect for others. If they don't show up for classes, they go to jail....that easy.
5) Police who understand the law and their duty to citizens and who are not afraid to follow the letter of the law. Police training in how to handle domestic abuse and violence, victims rights, the cycle of abuse, the impact of domestic abuse on future crimes, commendations nationally for police departments who do a good job protecting victims.
6) ADVERTISING for those resources and what people can do to help themselves if a domestic abuse situation, how to report it, phone numbers to call!

I agree 100% but how bad is "kind of banged up"? I don't know the situation the couple was in & that can make me biased. I want to know what makes relationships too violent. What leads up to a fist or an object? I'm happy she made that call if it was bad as she said that it was.

This is a prime example of the major problem with domestic abuse. People are fearful to call the police, in fear of further abuse. It's not just the physical abuse, either, often it can be psychological abuse, too, where the abuser will isolate the victim, preventing them from seeking outside help.

There needs to be better education on the signs of domestic abuse, so others can report suspected abuse and allow the relevant authorities to intervene where domestic abuse is suspected. It's not as clear cut as expecting victims to be able to report the abuse. Like in cases of child abuse, we need a system where doctors and police spot the signs of abuse and treat it just as seriously.

We don't expect children to be able to seek help when they're abused. We must treat all abuse victims this way. The safety of the victim should always come first.

I agree. A main problem with schools with councilors, they focus on children with mental disabilities rather than abuse victims. If they equally focused on them, rather than focusing on children with mental disabilities, there won't be such a strain on the mental hospital system in the future because there is a lot of mental illnesses stemmed from early abuse.

It also leads to a cycle of abuse. Some child abuse victims themselves become abusers in later life. It's horrible, but the only way to reduce abuse is to spot it early and put a stop to it.

that woman was very smart.

when you leave is when he kills you. if the cops are there you have a much better chance of surviving.

I don't know that domestic violence can be prevented. I think that the best we can do it to support victims in getting away, prosecuting abusers, and letting people know that they don't have to take it.

I think an important part of ending abuse is informing people on what abuse is and that they can always get help. All abusive relationships rely on the abused not being able to stand up for themselves, but its important for everyone to know that they can get help.

I'm going to just assume the poster was trying to be edgy. Although it does highlight one aspect of abuse, which is the abuser often puts the blame on the victim. So much so that victims start to believe it is their fault. Long after the physical abuse has ended, the psychological abuse could last a lifetime.

I would hope they're trained to stay on the phone and treat EVERY call as serious, until proven otherwise. Which is why prank calls are such a major problem for the police and can lead to prosecution.
