Are children better off with straight parents?

Postby Sheltopolis » Sun Sep 28, 2014 12:16 pm

Very interesting question: is it better for the social and emotional development of children to be raised in a household with gay parents, or a mother and father? It seems we have studies on both sides of the argument.

There was a study done here done by a professor of sociology that found 69% percent of children of lesbian mothers reported that their family received public assistance (e.g. welfare), compared with 17% from "intact biological families." Also, "about half of children of an intact biological family said they were employed full-time, compared with 26% of those born to a lesbian mother." Of course many question the validity of this survey, saying it has a right-wing agenda.

On the other hand there is evidence that looks in the other direction. According to LiveScience.com, gay parents "tend to be more motivated, more committed than heterosexual parents on average, because they chose to be parents." (article) Studies also showed that kids of gay parents fared no worse than those of straight parents, and in fact may be more open-minded.

My opinion on this would be a firm no — I do not see any compelling reason to say that kids raised by gay parents are worse-off than if they were raised by a mother and father. In fact they may even be better off. One thing I know for sure is that having two parents in the house is imperative for the success of any child. But whether that is two mothers, two fathers, or both, I could care less.

Thoughts?

I knew a gay couple who had a child, a teenage girl.

One was a busdriver and the other a stay-at-home mom. No welfare. (anecdotal but nonetheless true).

She had the typical teen life; a fair allowance, decent clothes, a reasonable curfew. She went to games and concerts with friends; no rejection.

The girl's life was in fact so typical that she rebelled against her parents by being as openly heterosexual as possible. ;)

I don't see why the genders of the parents would matter to whether they do a good job of taking care of their kids or not.

I would amend that to say children are better with loving parents. Their own parents could be abusive monsters after all.

Children are not better off with straight parents or parents of the same sex, but with parents who accept and love there child(ren) and care about the child(ren).

Good parents, children are better off with good parents.

I think so. Child rearing in my mind is far more sacred than marriage. To me, the artificial ways of encimination that create the children of same sex couples are despicable. I feel like a lot of the LGBT folk who want to adopt do so not out of the welfare of the children being adopted, but instead to "have a child like the straights do." Anybody should be able to adopt if the reason is to help the child, if the reason is to have one without being biologically able, I can;t say that I have any respect for those types at all honestly.

I don't condone homosexuality in general, but, that's because of my religious background. But, it isn't my position to tell them what they can and can't do, as long as people are happy, who gives a fuck.

All other things being equal (child rearing skills, and provisioning ability); the only adverse effect on a child raised by gay parents is the homophobic attitudes of other people. Therefore it could be said that gay parents tend to raise emotionally stronger children.

No, children are better off with parents that love them and don't abuse them and such, regardless of the sexual orientation of their parents.

Children are in all cases better off with straight parents. Gay parents could never give "their" kids the moral standards necessary to be an kind of decent person. Children need both a mother and a father and they need parents with some basic morals.

Yes but my question is, on average, do straight or gay parents tend to raise more successful children, or is there no correlation?

What morals? You mean, don't steal, Don't lie, don't kill, respect others, live a good life serving others? Anyone can teach children those.
