The year is 1850 AD and the world is a very different place. Massive Empires have been created, with huge armies that are capable of war on a scale greater than ever before in the history of mankind. The beginnings of industrialization are taking root in the modern world, and monstrous machines have the capability to break the economic barriers of the past. Fleets travel the world, many towards the New World to make further discoveries. Massive amounts of cheap land, the promise of work, and tales of adventure have caused many to travel overseas to this new world. Similarly, the continent of Africa has peaked many interests, as its valuable resources and the excitement of travel bring people from all nations to bear.
Just as these lands draw in people, nations are drawn towards these areas as well. Many nations have created colonies to enhance their position, and increase their power. This is not an easy process however; the natives have to be subdued, and even after that, other industrial nations have to be fended off. This colonization has the potential to cause something the world has never seen before; a war on a global scale. Your enemies are afoot, watching your moves, trying to take your land: welcome to the World of Conquest!

Nation Descriptions:
The top ten powers, known as world powers for their influence, here have rather in depth descriptions and are ranked from one to ten. These rankings do not necessarily mean one nation will be able to defeat a nation of lower status. If Muscovia and the Holy Roman Empire go to war, there is no guarentee the HRE will win even despite its higher ranking. However, if Persia #10 invades the HRE alone, the war would be relatively one sided.
1. The Holy Roman Empire (Light Orange)
The Holy Roman Empire has no colonies, as you can see. However, it has dominated Europe and European politics for many years; many of the consumers for the products made of other nations are in the Holy Roman Empire. Its large population, wealthy populace, and diplomatic prowess are enough to rocket it into first place. Do not forget, however, that the Holy Roman Empire has many problems, possible the most of any other nation, including a massive trade deficit and reliance on other powers for resources, ethnic diversity (although the majority of people consider themselves German, there are places where Italian or Polish hold the majority), and political strife within the nation.
Population: 150 million
Army Size: 150,000 standing army, 2,000,000 reserves (if you mobilize your poor)
Industry: Reliant on other powers for natural resources, but many of the largest businesses around the world are still German.
Diplomacy: With greater prestige than any nation, German is the lingua franca of Europe.
2. The Empire of Catalonia (Blue)
The Catalonian Empire is massive, reaching every continent. With significant trade throughout the world, and access to a pleather of natural resources, it is Catalonia that will be challenging the Holy Roman Empire for the number 1 spot. With a solid, united Catalonian population, masterfully placed colonies, and a powerful, modern economy, France is the colonial power that other nations wish to be. France has several significant drawbacks however: the French forces are spread out, maintaining control over her colonies is a daunting task. Similarly, many colonies do not yield soldiers that add up to more than a local militia, so even though Catalonia’s population is high, its troops count remains lower than expected, and many of these troops are tied up in the colonies.
Population: 200 million
Army Size: 190,000 standing army, 1,550,000 if reserves are mobilized
Industry: Catalonia has more natural resources than any other nation (besides possibly Britain or Muscovia). As such, it provides much of the world with natural resources as well as having its own booming business.
Diplomacy: Catalonia has control over colonies on every continent except Australia and Antarctica. Because of this, Catalonia maintains relations with people’s everywhere. Known for her universities, students from around the world come to Catalonia to study.
3. The Tsardom of Muscovia (Dark Purple/Blue)
The Muscovian Empire is larger than any other on the planet, encompassing a massive portion of the Earth’s land. With a wealth of natural resources and a large presence in most regions of the world, Muscovia is a bad enemy to have. Muscovia’s large native population allows it to field more soldiers than any other nation on the planet. Despite this, Muscovia has several key drawbacks. The first is its poor infrastructure; Muscovia has access to a massive reserve of natural resources, but because of poor roads, or no roads at all, many of these resources go unused. Also, the diverse ethnicity of the population leads to the possibility of revolts, especially because of the large number of them that are poor. With these in mind, Muscovia is, militarily, the most powerful nation on the planet, and it is not a nation whose threats should be taken lightly.
Population: 204 million
Army Size: 250,000 Standing Army, 2,200,000 reserves
Industry: Despite Muscovia’s large reserves of natural resources, its weak infrastructure and unfriendly business climate has prevented Muscovia from becoming a world business leader. That could soon change, however.
Diplomacy: As the most powerful nation in the world, militarily, Muscovia is a welcomed ally and feared enemy. It has a more powerful diplomatic presence in Asia than any other nation.
4. The Empire of Greater Portugal (Green)
The Portuguese Empire is close in many ways to the Empire of France. Because Spain never formed, and because Islam never took hold, Portugal was able to expand in Europe, gaining valuable territory. Furthermore, the Portuguese colonies in the New World bring in more income for Portugal than any other new world colonies. Portugal holds much of valuable India, as well as having a powerful presence in the Indies. Portugal suffers from several maladies, however. The first is the spread of its Empire, which is costly to maintain and takes up a large portion of the Portuguese military. The second is its distance from the rest of Europe, which has kept it at a trade disadvantage with some of the other European nations. Still, holding the strait of Gibraltar, and valuable port cities like Singapore, Portugal is the solidly one of the most powerful nations in the world.
Population: 100 million
Army Size: 100,000 Standing Army, 1,050,000 reserves
Industry: Portuguese Industry is booming, due to Portugal’s massive resource wealth and strong infrastructure. Still, it is not quite as powerful as some on the list.
Diplomacy: Portugal is well respected around the world. With colonies everywhere, Portuguese threats are credible, and Portuguese is one of the most spoken languages in the world.
5. Great Britain/The British Empire (Red)
Poor Great Britain; having lost the US, Australia, and New Zealand, never having Gibraltar or South Africa, and having to share Canada and India has definitely put a dent in the power of the English. However, Great Britain is no nation to scoff at. With significant colonies on every continent, most of which are larger than any other nations’, Great Britain presence is still around. Along with this, Great Britain has the best infrastructure in the world, as well as the highest native literacy rate the world has seen. This, along with significant industries throughout its Empire, puts Great Britain among the most powerful nations in the world.
Population: 250 million
Army Size: 130,000 Standing Army, 1,200,000 reserves
Industry: Great Britain does not have the monopolies it did in the real world. However, it is still one of the most industrially powerful nations on earth, and boasting the greatest infrastructure on the planet, its home grown businesses have a great advantage over many others.
Diplomacy: Despite Great Britain’s seemingly weak holdings, Great Britain did once own Australia and the US, making English one of the most common languages around the world. Its powerful business has also elevated English to an important business language.
6. The Kingdom of Castile (Brown/Purplish)
Castile lies in the heartland of Spain, between the incredible powerful Empire of France, and the massively expansive Empire of Portugal. Despite the relatively small fraction of Iberia that Castile inhabits, its empire is very large, and its technology is stubbornly modern. Owning nearly half of South America, and Bangladesh, Nepal, much of Jakarta, and more, Castile has proven a persistent world power. More native Castillans live abroad than in European Castile itself, making Castile a very multiethnic and worldly nation. While Castile may not be as powerful as Muscovia, as influential as France, or as industrially sound as Britain, Castile plays a powerful role in world affairs, and is still a world power.
Population: 66 million
Army Size: 100,000 Standing Army, 900,000 reserves.
Industry: Castile has a powerful industrial sector, as its colonies span the globe. The Castile Indies as well as Castilian Bengali bring in plenty of cash to the Castillian coffers. Despite this, however, the Castilian economy still relies heavily on trade with other European powers.
Diplomacy: Castile has a presence throughout the world, and while Castillian is not one of the most spoken languages it is so on the Continent of South America and in pockets around the world as well. Castile’s diplomatic weakpoint is in Europe, where larger European powers tend to have a more dominating force on the political structure.
7. The Empire of Romania (Light Yellow)
The heirs of the Roman Empire, the Romanian Empire stretches across most of southeastern Europe. While Romania has no colonies to speak of, Romania is at a vital crossroads between Asia and Europe, and it maintains a powerful presence in the Mediterranean as well. Its proximity to the Holy Roman Empire gives it an industrial boost, despite an older infrastructure. Its lack of colonies gives it an advantage in war over other nations, as its entire population is native, and can be used for military action directly against its enemy. A solid Empire, with moderate industrial strength, and highly modern tech.
Population: 51 million
Army Size: 120,000 standing army, 900,000 reserves
Industry: Romania’s lack of colonies means it has fewer natural resources than many of the worldwide Empires, but it does have a relatively large share of trade routes and European resources. Together, this, along with the fact that Romania holds some of Europe’s oldest businesses, gives the nation a solid industrial structure.
Diplomacy: Romania has little presence worldwide, but in Europe it has a large effect on surrounding nations. Muscovia and the Holy Roman Empire, two of the most powerful nations in the world, both share borders with Romania, and Romania’s influence in Eastern Europe’s very powerful.
8. The United States of America (Dark Blue)
As a New World nation, the US is a very different nation than the European ones. While modern, it has a lack of infrastructure that comes with its vast territory and recent industrialization. Despite this, the United States maintains a powerful relationship with other nations worldwide, and has begun its climb onto the world stage. With a homogeneous population, one of the most stable governments in the world, and a good attitude, the United States of America is clawing its way towards the top.
Population: 45 million
Army Size: 700,000 standing army, 900,000 reserves
Industry: American industry is quickly growing in power, particularly corporations that deal with railroads and steel. Furthermore, the US’s vast natural resources are allowing business there to thrive.
Diplomacy: As the New Comer on the world stage, the US does not yet have a powerful reputation worldwide. However, close relationships with a few world powers are all that is required, as the US has no reason to begin a war with Europe.
9. The Kingdom of Judaea (Purple)
See that purple there? Wouldn’t that make a great Byzantine Empire? Nope. Judaea is a powerful Jewish nation that just barely made the top ten most powerful nations in the world. Due to the fact that Islam never became widespread, the Jews were able to reclaim their homeland and now currently rule over much of the Middle East. As a modern nation, the Jews have worked to reform Judaea into an industrial power. Lying on powerful trade routes, and enjoying some of the most valuable ports in the Mediterranean, Judaea’s industry is quickly growing in power. Still, a lack of natural resources tempers that growth, and the nation is quickly becoming reliant on other nations for these resources.
Population: 67 million
Army Size: 800,000 standing army, 900,000 reserves
Industry: Judaea’s Industry is extremely powerful, outranking some of the higher ranking nations on the list. But without enough natural resources, its industrial growth is doomed to grind to a halt.
Diplomacy: Judaea is one of the oldest nations alive, and is well respected in many fields. With the Library of Alexandria, the Great Pyramids, Jerusalem, and many other valuable relics, Judaea is well known as a place with valuable education and great culture. Furthermore, its influence in the eastern Mediterranean is unparalleled.
10. The Empire of Persia (Orange)
Rounding out the top ten most powerful nations in the world is the powerful Persian Empire. Persia is well known as an indisputable power, as it is remained for longer than any other modern nation. Persians never fell behind Europe, as open relations with Judaea kept trade flowing on the silk roads, and bringing technology to Persia. The nation currently is very united under a single culture, and expanding into nearby regions.
Population: 60 million
Army Size: 100,000 standing army, 950,000 reserves
Industry: Persian Industry is very old fashioned, and much of Persia’s income relies on trade, particularly for food, as in many places within the Empire, arable land is hard to come by.
Diplomacy: Persia is very unique in that its international interactions have led it to become very Westernized, unlike the rest of Asia. Persia is not looked upon with disdain, but rather as a possible ally and regional power.
China, Japan, and the Aztecs
China, Japan and the Azteca are all up for change based on history. All three have lower tech than Europe, but they are beginning to catch up. Because I have not set populations for these, please be realistic in your apps.
The Scandanavian Union
Looking for the vikings? Well by 1850, they're long gone, but you can play as their descendants. Although the Scandanavians have few colonial holdings, they are in Europe, and could be valuable allies to some of the world powers.
Australia, Mates?
Austrailia is a small nation at this time, with only about 11 million people! That being said, it does have modern technology, and so could be more militarily effective in some ways than the Aztecs, or Japan or China.
What the #@$! is going on in Italy and Iraq?
So, in this RP you will have a choice of if you would like to try to unite Italy or Mesopotamia. If you decide to do so, you will be able to RP as every individual state there; you will control them all. However, your first pose CANNOT be them being united. It will take time to unite these nations, and other nations (the HRE and France in the case of Italy, Judaea and Persia in the case of Mesopotamia) will be able to impact the outcome. The good news is that these nations are modern and have a relatively high population for their territory: Italy, 30 million, Mesopotamia, 28 million.
