Catalan Independence Referendum- 9th November 2014 Thread.

Postby Bandwagon » Tue Sep 23, 2014 8:59 am

I decided to start a thread because I saw that the thread about the Scottish independence referendum. First for people who get easily excited here's the countdown to it I made. (For the start time I used what they used for the Euro Elections)
http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/election?iso=20141109T09&p0=31&msg=Catalan+Independence+Referendum&csz=1&swk=1
Here is the link to an up to date RT article. (I know it's usually propaganda but it was known for it's coverage over Scotland)
http://rt.com/news/189792-catalonia-support-independence-poll/
First:
If you lived there what would you think. When I went there about every house had a flag. It seems like they want even more than the polls in areas outside Barcelona.
So I decided, The Nationstates Community. Which way would you go?

I thought the Spanish government said any independence referendums were illegal. I'm pro-independence, but I doubt they'll allow this to happen.

Sorry for my bad.
There are two questions.
Do you want Catalonia to be a state?
Do you want Catalonia to stay part of Spain?

This referendum willl be meaningless and will have no effect on the political status of Catalonia. It won't be taken seriously by the Spanish government.

In my opinion, as a non-Spaniard, Spain (and plenty of other countries in Europe, like Italy, France and Britain) should adopt federalism.
Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.

I'm all for Catalan independence. And if Spain doesn't allow the referendum, well that just shows Spain is doing a horrible job at keeping itself together.

Venetian independence when?
Duca Robin Leonardo II de Cavrianesi, Duke of Alto Mantovano, Leader of the Mantoan League.
During the age of the Signorie, house Cavrianesi took over the duchy of Mantua. While following in the footsteps of the Gonzagas, the new dinasty seeked protection not only in diplomacy, but also in expansion. In a small-scale cold war between the regional powers, a compromise had been reached: The League of Alto Mantovano. A highly federalized union between the italian states, with Alto Mantovano as a Leader.

I'm just a very lazy student, I'm half German and half Italian, and interested in History. Feel free to PM me if you have anything to say.

We aren't in the medieval ages anymore,

It'll probably be a 'Yes' vote to both because the referendum has no formal power and there won't be much of a debate about the issues at hand; the debate so far seems to be mainly focused over legality rather than what it actually means. If people can vote Yes with impunity, then I expect they will.

The Catalan government will then likely demand a settlement not far short of independence; what happens then will be the interesting question.
Back after a long break.

The reason a lot of groups want independence is because the modern states were formed by conquest of smaller nations.

I think Spain should recognize the referendum; if it doesn't, I would be okay with Catalonia breaking from Spain on its own.

Why do you think it's better to have fewer? If a state contains many nations that it forcibly added to its territory, then it has a difficult job representing them all.

Yeah, Russia is more divided as far as nations wanting independence go. But how does that change anything? Many countries want independence because 1) many didn't want to be absorbed to begin with, 2) many have been historically oppressed by the ruling nation, and 3) many have desires that are very different than those of the more powerful nation.
