Should Private Schools Share Facilities With State Schools?

Postby Alexanda » Sun Sep 21, 2014 6:24 am

In a recent 'Opinion' column in The Times, a Ms.Janice Turner voiced her concerns that Independent Schools were becoming 'too elitist', and that they should share their facilities with local State Schools.

Ms. Turner accused her local Independent School (a Girl's School,) of acting 'snobby' and 'elitist' after it refused the local State School access to its PE facilities, instead 'only' granting it one session per week in its £25 million swimming pool. Ms. Turner is concerned that private schools are becoming too uncharitable and isolated, agreeing with the Master of Marlborough College that these places of education must avoid becoming 'isolated enclaves of privilege'. According to her, Private Schools should share facilities, leaver parties and game tournaments with State Schools.

What is your opinion on the matter, NationStates players? Do you think Private Schools should share the facilities they paid for with State Schools?

In my opinion, Private/Independent Schools should not be expected to share their facilities with State Schools. The swimming pools, sports studios and so on have been paid for by the parents of the students of the Private School, and therefore those who did not pay for them shouldn't expect to be given an equal share. In life, when one pays for something, one doesn't expect it to be used by somebody else just because they do not have it.

Many do. In addition there are benefits to private schools in partnering with state schools. closer co-operation and co-ordination between the two is not only charitable, its pretty sound common sense.

No they shouldn't - unless they want to. It's private premises. Try funding the public schools more instead.

Furthermore, private schools shouldn't receive money from the government in any form, not even tax discounts or vouchers. Enough corporate welfare.

Assuming that any government subsidies they may receive are offset by scholarship programs? They have no obligation to.

Private schools are private. It is therefore the decision of the owners as to whether or not to share their facilities. If it were up to me, I would allow a public school to use the facilities provided that they pay a fee. This would discourage the public schools from investing in useless things like sports.

I don't think ot should be illegal...seeing as the primary function of sharing facilities within schools would be the education of children...

I'm definitely not a fan, seeing as its a private school, they shouldn't have to share their facilities.

Share leaver parties?

Isn't the whole point to celebrate with your own classmates, not randoms from the other 25 schools in town?

State schools are subject to the will of all taxpayers, and should use their excess resources for the benefit of the public whenever possible, including sharing resources with private schools. It opens up more options for the students, creates competition, and allows new hypotheses about education to be tested.

Private schools are subject to the will of their customers, and forcing them to go against that is cruel, unnecessary, and unjustifiable. In the case you mentioned, the anger was about the public school not getting to use a swimming pool, which is, frankly, absurd. Swimming pools are a luxury, and anyone unwilling to purchase one is not entitled to one.

If a private school wants to get money from the state, it can become a state school. Whats absurd is expecting state schools to share resources without reciprocation from private schools. If sharing brings benefits, why would either party need compelling to co-operate? The article isn't suggesting private schools be forced to share, merely that it is good practice to do so.

I think this is quite a good idea. Many private schools have far superior facilities so opening them up to people who can't afford to would be a good thing. However you can't ultimate force private schools to share facilities as they are private property and businesses.

Ideally state schools would have excellent facilities as well but unfortunately where all a bit strapped at the moment and quality doesn't come for free.

Nor indeed would it make sense for every state school to have excellent facilities when they could be shared by a cluster of schools.

I frequently used to offer lifts to work colleagues who needed one to get home, or to save them a long wait at a bus stop at night. I was glad to do it too, because I knew that if they couldn't get a lift, It'd mean more work for me in the long run.

Hm. Interesting proposal.

While I agree with the theory, in practice this might not be best way to go, at least in the United States, as thanks to NCLB the schools that need those facilities the most would be the ones who could least afford them.

People pay a lot of money to attend private schools (WESLEY COLLEGE REPRESENT!) so I don't see why they should have to share. If we are putting the money into maintaining these facilities and you are not...why should we let you use them? My issue is that you don't pay for it to be maintained.

I'd say privatisation of all schools would be decent, but as I know it is an utopia, I'll stick to saying no.

and? the headmaster of a state school isn't exactly a stranger to the head of private one either. They work in the same industry, with families largely from the same community and benefit from co-operating.

The benefit is having local teams who are able to compete at the same standard offering more opportunities for competitive inter-school sport.

However, it should be noted that you did this voluntarily. I don't think anyone here agrees with the idea that the private school shouldn't be able to if they want to. The question is, should they be forced to.

Excellent. They will have to carefully consider sharing any facilities. As I said in my first post this will discourage wasteful investment.
