Ebola could be Africa's salvation. God Speed, Ebola

Postby Kromar » Mon Sep 15, 2014 7:45 pm

I can think of few things with as much potential to solve the African problem as a cross-continental, high casualty ebola epidemic.
Now before the keyboard warrior decend, allow me to give a bit of historical perspective.

The Black Death was perhaps the greatest thing to ever happen to Europe. In the wake of The Black Death, people found themselves with a lot of inherited wealth. The average person was no longer quite so destitute. This allowed them to invest resources as a society to the development of more effecient farming technology, which was sorely needed since a huge chunk of the brute labor force had been eliminated. MOre efficient farmers meant more food with less work, which freed up more people to pursue industrial and science related occupations, uplifting the tech level and production power of Europe. At some point, Europeans found themselves superior to all their neighbors, and dominated them militarily, increasing their power even further. We never really lost the advantage we gained back then.

a reckoning from Ebola will allow Africa to finally uplift itself. The only point of contention must be "Is it worth the price?"
You already know my opinion, but I'll summarize it here: A thousand strong mass of thriving, prosperous people is better than a million suffering, starving, warring people.

I'd be interested to hear your opinions, NSG.

No. The Black Death was in no way good for Europe.

Am I talking to Lex Luthor or something? This sounds like the plot to a crappy Superman movie.

In all seriousness though you are talking about the deaths of millions. Furthermore, medieval Europe is not comparable to modern Africa in a number of ways. So you can't say for sure that the same benefits will happen.

That's absolutely sickening and historically inaccurate. I find it abhorrent that somebody would want a large group of innocent people to die because "prosperity." You're advocating the death of millions of innocents, so you should seriously take a step away from the computer and ask yourself if you'd like to be affected by Ebola and if you genuinely care for the well being of others.

Uh, the Black Death wasn't the Labour Party in microbial form. It wasn't like the disease itself was why Medieval Europe began to enter the early modern era, and I'm not even getting started on all the other events that factored into it.

Because a viral disease outbreak paving the way for local warlords to overthrow their governments and for powerful nations to use this as an opportunity to influence governments is great for any continent

No. Ebola is horrible, these people don't deserve to die. Ask yourself this, if the 1,000 strong over 1,000,000 weak analog truly is what you stand by, would you want say, your entire family to mysteriously disappear and you be left with all of their wealth? Sure, you'd be well off, but the fact is it's not worth the other 999,000 deaths. Ebola needs to be removed as soon as possible, black death in Europe is incomparable, back then we didn't have the medical advances we have today, epidemic genocide by withholding easily-acessible medicine is no better than mass murder.

Of course Ebola sucks for those that get it, but years, decades, centuries later, who really cares about the losers? The progress gained will snowball throughout time, and people born into a prosperous, tech producing Africa will look back and say "Thank you, Ebola"

I think that there are far better ways to bring Africa towards prosperity than mass death by ebola.

Yes, because the world's Native American population always looks back and says "Thank you, Smallpox".
