Everyone loses contact with someone or something every once in a while. You might be in the middle of an important cell phone call while driving down the road, and then BAM! You enter a deadzone/crash into something because you weren't paying attention to the semi driving down the opposite side of the road. A certain plane may go missing, and when all attempts to contact said plane end up instead contacting "hiss city," authorities will do everything in their power to figure out where 300 or so people just went and why they have gone missing. Well, what happens when a town goes off the map?

You might be asking: "what the hell is Cylarn talking about now?" Well, in this story, instead of a plane or other item going off the radar, it's a town that seems to go missing. The town of Holliman, NC, is an unremarkable little town located near the NC Research Triangle, the suburban town catering mainly to researchers and their families. In the middle of October of 2012, a seemingly unnatural phenomena has overtaken little Holliman. A dense, massive cloud of fog has engulfed the entire town up to its limits, obscuring views from land, air, and even space. Communications to and from Holliman have also been affected, and no word has left the town since the day the fog rolled in. To make matters worse, the authorities report that no vehicles or people have been seen leaving the town as well. In an attempt to figure out what has been going on, the Wake County Sheriff's Department dispatched 4 deputies in order to get down to the bottom of the situation.

It's been one week since those deputies last reported in, when they were just entering the town limits. The state is now overwhelmed with news about the unnatural situation, with many theories as to why a town of 1,000 people has seemingly slipped off the map without a trace. With people demanding action, the Governor and the Adjutant General have decided to take action, putting together a task force in order to get to the bottom of the mystery. The creation of Task Force Searchlight has heralded the beginning of Operation Factfinder. Comprised of several NC Army National Guard units as well as a small component of federal government employees, civilian experts, and foreign observers, the battalion-sized force has been supplied with an array of equipment and a blank check in order to uncover what truly happened in Holliman. What they are about to face is something that no human should ever encounter.

For the Natty Guard/Military Observers
- The primary units deployed with Task Force Searchlight are derived from Infantry, Engineering, Medical, Logistics, and Operations units of the 30th. Heavy Brigade Combat Team and the 113th. Sustainment Brigade.

- Special Forces and Special Forces-qualified soldiers would not be attached to Searchlight; the most badass specialized personnel would likely be Ranger-qualified and/or Sapper-qualified, though these guys would not be numerous. Most of the soldiers would likely not have attended many specialty schools (Airborne, Air Assault, etc.), unless they had served in the active duty Army prior to their transition over to the NCNG. You're citizen soldiers, though many of you may have been deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan, and you very well may have seen combat, considering the 30th. HBCT's role as a mechanized infantry unit.

- Not much is known about the situation, and speculation as to what happened in Holliman is abound. Some say that it was some sort of atmospheric anomaly; others claim it to be a terrorist attack. A minority of soldiers attribute the anomaly to be of supernatural origins, though these rumors are largely hushed by the brass. Attempts to observe the town via drones have proved unsuccessful, though it has been confirmed that the fog is not poisonous or the result of a chemical weapon. Regardless, the NCNG, US Army, and various law enforcement agencies have established a blockade of the town's entrances, for public safety concerns.

- We're not rolling into Kandahar to go whip ass, though we're not going into Holliman without armaments. Body armor, helmets, and firearms are all issued on the recommendation of the Task Force Commander, however TOW missiles and munitions heavier than a few AT-4s are out of the question. Vehicle-wise, the unit is equipped with HMMWVs (Humvees), M35 trucks, M1117 ASVs, as well as a collection of civilian vehicles, namely Chevrolet Tahoes and Suburbans.

For the Civilian Observers

- Your ranks are comprised of federal officials, officials from foreign governments, and employees of various private organizations that have taken an interest in Searchlight. When I say "private organizations," I do not mean SCP or some sort of covert paramilitary or clandestine group. What I mean by this is that most of these particular individuals are scientists and scholars, along with media personnel who have been cleared to accompany the team.

- Colonel Malcolm Sinclair - The Task Force Commander of Task Force Searchlight; COL Sinclair is a highly respected member of the NCNG.

- Dr. Johanna Svendsen - A European biochemist attached to Searchlight as a representative of the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina.

- Special Agent Matthew Gregory - A young but well-tested field agent with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

- Dr. Simon Ruellan - A young French doctor attached to the WHO; he has been sent along with Searchlight as the organization's representative.

- Agent Leroy Nordheim - A veteran Norwegian intelligence operative dispatched to study the anomaly on behalf of the Norwegian government.

Her right eye has a a smaller portion of blue pigmentation, about one fifth of the eye being blue.

Personality: Johanna is rather shy and not very talkative, unless work needs to be done. She is very introverted, however inside craving socialisation which she has a deficit of. She is very open emotionally with friends and people she knows or trusts, as much as she is closed with people she doesn't know. Johanna is very intelligent and observant, while also being a relatively good judge of character. She has strict liberal views on rights among other things. Johanna is overly curious, the trait often getting the best of her. Johanna is almost fearless, being afraid of only loosing her life, and even that not so much as she believes in rebirth, although she definitely deems survival very important. Johanna isn't afraid of conflict, which she has little of anyways due to her introverted personality. She is very pragmatic and believes knowledge as the ultimate source of wisdom and virtually infinitely important, also believing science is the most important human creation and must be respected, lack of which she doesn't tolerate. She is extremely intelligent and polite. Johanna likes to deem herself aromantic, which is false and known to her, more reflected on what she wants to be rather than is.

Background (Tell us about who you are. 2 paragraph minimum): Johanna was born in Malmö, Sweden into a middle class family consisting of a German father and a Swedish mother. Her father happened to be working in in Sweden when Johanna's Swede-Danish mother met him. Her mother, Helga, first birthed Johanna's elder sisters Kristen and Scarlett, before Johanna's own birth. According to her parents, Johanna's conception, unlike her sisters' was unintentional. Growing up a shy and introverted child, Johanna preferred playing with Lego rather than other toys up into her teens, when she still occasionally did so in secret. A smart, intelligent girl, Johanna exceeded in school, finishing it with a silver medal. She continued this trend into university, where she greatly exceeded at in University of Copenhagen, having previously moved to Denmark.

She became a MSc in Biochemistry at the university and later got a PhD in molecular biology and biochemistry. Getting ready to start a career in either Hamburg or Copenhagen, Johanna ultimately accepted an offer made by the European Commission to be a foreign observer in Liberia. The job payed well and after the lengthy trip Johanna settled in Hamburg, the European Commission having been pleased with her extensive research and ability to work expertise. She was then asked to be a foreign observer in China and Russia, which she also accepted. Out of necessity Johanna started to uplift her knowledge of the other sciences to perfect her knowledge and become a Multi branch professional. All of this had made the young woman immensely hard and was put a strain on her as a young individual, who couldn't literally 'only work'. But she managed, returning to Germany and getting a relaxing break for more than a year. Most members of the scientific community Johanna met expressed praise for her hard work and she went up the career ladder drastically, starting to work on a serious project that she hoped would get her the Nobel prize, or something similar. Now she was put up to the job of accompanying a special team, consisting of mainly military members to find out the strange circumstances of the dissapearance of a town.

Identifying Traits and/or Features: Despite being a high-ranking Army officer, Malcolm's physical fitness is on par with that of his own men, keeping himself fit by commonly PT'ing with his troops and working out on his own. He is missing his left pinky finger, which was shot off during a firefight early in his Army career.

Personality: Most men and women who have served under Malcolm will note his rather friendly and good nature, and his desire to look out for the best interests of his troops. Unlike many other Army officers, he has a habit of socializing with his men and earning their admiration. However, it's his leadership abilities that earn their admiration. An intelligent, pragmatic, and brave officer, he is known to fight alongside his troops, often leading them from the front when heading into combat and even risking his life in order to rescue other units. He is not one to throw his men into harm's way; throwing men into a meat grinder for little in return is something that he will not do, not without proper support.

Despite his love for his soldiers, he can become rather angry with them. During a deployment in Afghanistan, a female soldier was raped by a member of his staff, and after being presented with evidence of the incident by the victim and several other soldiers, he personally outed the officer in front of the entire battalion and humiliated him for his actions. Whenever a unit under his command performs in an unsatisfactory manner due to a lack of discipline, he is often on the scene, blousing the soldiers and even their own leadership for the infraction in order to ensure the transgressors of the level of his unhappiness. He cannot tolerate officers and NCOs who do not care for their men, nor will he tolerate disrespectful Privates and Specialists.

Skills: Malcolm's life is the Infantry. After his graduation from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, he attended Ranger School and the Infantry Basic Officer Leadership Course, the grueling training of which developed him into an excellent infantry officer with an extensive understanding of infantry tactics and leadership, as well as weapons training and hand-to-hand combat training. He also is qualified as a Master Parachutist by the US Army, and is also trained in Air Assault and Pathfinder specializations.

He has been in combat before, witnessing the carnage firsthand. Whether wearing the Butter Bar or the Full Bird, he has been on the ground with his men, rifle in hand. He has killed men before and suffered injuries; they say that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and due to his experiences in combat, Malcolm is a strong person. In addition to his military service, he grew up in the African nation of Rhodesia during the Rhodesian Bush War, when the white minority UDI government waged war against black nationalists. As a boy, he was almost killed in a department store bombing in Salisbury, which took the lives of his grandparents and his younger sister, an experience that both solidified his fearlessness, but also scarred him for life.

Weaknesses: Despite being a capable and veteran leader, Malcolm is not without his set of weaknesses. First off, he suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress, attributed to not only his combat service, but also to the strife that he experienced as a youth in Cold War-era Africa. He regularly suffers from nightmares, and has been known to suffer from flashbacks, though he has been able to avoid freaking out in front of his men. Not known by anyone else, Malcolm has attempted suicide twice - first by combat, and then by his own sidearm - though he hasn't been able to follow through with it.

In addition to his PTSD, Malcolm is unable to drop a grudge against someone. In the most severe case of this, he held a grudge against a classmate in college who had hazed him as a Freshman and humiliated him in front of many other Army ROTC Cadets. As a First Lieutenant, Malcolm was rather upset to find out that this same cadet was his Company CO. Although he tried to control his anger and disgust with the Captain, he ended up berating the man in front of the entire company after watching him humiliate a Private in front of the entire company, an incident that almost cost Malcolm his career, had it not been for the Company First Sergeant and the rest of the leadership in the company rallying around the Executive Officer.

Motivations: Malcolm has no family in Holliman, but rather some colleagues from NC State that have gone silent since Holliman became shrouded by the fog. Not only does he see it as his duty to get to the bottom of the situation, but he genuinely wants to recover his colleagues from the town.

Family: Andrea Pelosi-Sinclair (Wife; 41), Thomas Sinclair (Son; 16).

Background: Born in 1966 in the industrial town of Bulawayo, Malcolm grew up in a nation in which the white minority was fighting a war against both black nationalists and foreign political opposition. His father was an American who was serving as a Lieutenant in the Rhodesian Army, and his Afrikaner/Rhodesian mother was an heiress to a mining fortune in the small African nation. With his parents idolizing the new nation and Prime Minister Ian Smith, Malcolm grew up with a sense of pride for his nation. He would watch on with glee as the soldiers of the army and the policemen of the BSAP would pass through town on their way to fight the Communists, and he considered himself to be a proud citizen of the greatest nation in Africa.

When he was 6 years old, he would barely survive a terrorist attack while on vacation with his maternal grandparents in Salisbury, Rhodesia. A ZANLA insurgent had bombed a department store, killing 30 people. That death toll included both of Malcolm's grandparents, as well as his 3 year-old sister. He was furious and saddened by this incident, and forever scarred by the incident. Despite his desire to see ZANLA and ZIPRA fall to the well-trained forces of Rhodesia, the government soon gave up, allowing the majority to take control of the nation. The Sinclair family moved to Durban, South Africa following the Lancaster House Agreement, and remained there for a year before moving to the United States, settling in North Carolina, where most of his father's family lived.

It was hard for Malcolm to adjust to the American lifestyle, as he was commonly picked on for his accent and his different grammar. Eventually, he overcame these hardships, but although he managed to largely grow out of his Rhodesian accent, he couldn't escape that exotic dialect completely, and it still seemed to show up whenever the man became angry. Following his graduation from high school, Malcolm accepted an Army ROTC Scholarship to Appalachian State University.

Graduating from ASU in 1988, he commissioned into the US Army as an Infantry Platoon Leader. In 1989, the young Second Lieutenant had just barely entered the 82nd. Airborne when the US invaded Panama. He first saw combat in this nation, earning the Silver Star during action against the PDF. Despite being an inexperienced Butterbar, his intelligence, courage, and leadership during Operation Just Cause earned him the admiration of his soldiers and his peers. By Operation Desert Storm, he was a Company Executive Officer, though he was placed under the command of a rather poor officer: a Captain by the name of O'Hara, of whom Sinclair had previously been humiliated by during his time at ASU.

Widely regarded as an asshole, O'Hara had little respect for his men, and treated them like complete shit, from personally tearing apart a barracks to prove a point, to removing liberty privileges for the entire company over menial concerns. Sinclair received the brunt of O'Hara's ill treatment, and the young First Lieutenant could only take so much. During a company formation in Saudi Arabia following the end of Operation Desert Storm, O'Hara took the opportunity to punish a Private for the mild discrepancy of not properly cleaning a latrine, at which point Sinclair lost his shit and began to berate his commanding officer for every man in the company to witness. Malcolm couldn't even believe what he was doing, but he just couldn't stop himself from getting into O'Hara's face and pointing out every instance of bad leadership that the man had demonstrated. Things had just gotten bad, and O'Hara wasn't about to take this example of insubordination.

Facing charges of Insubordination, Malcolm was suddenly surprised during his hearing when he received the support of the company leadership, as well as from the Battalion XO, who had witnessed the entire ordeal. Saved from the premature cessation of his Army career, Malcolm would go on to earn a reputation as a well-liked commander, and he not only completed courses at the US Army Command and General Staff College, the War College, and the Australian Command and Staff College, but he also earned his Master's Degree in Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies from UNC Chapel Hill (Chapel Thrill). At some point in this period of his life, he met an Italian woman by the name of Andrea Pelosi, an analyst for Haliburton. The two began a relationship, and got married. 2 years later, they celebrated the birth of their son, Thomas.

After his promotion to Colonel, Malcolm transitioned over to the North Carolina National Guard, transitioning over to the STARC and earning a spot in the faculty of NC State's Army ROTC Department. When the anomaly occurred in Holliman, he was selected to lead Task Force Searchlight.

Identifying Traits and/or Features: Above average fitness due to the nature of his job, Tends to take anger out in the form of boxing. Though not "ripped" or "built" he has a slightly more athletic build than the average joe.

Personality:Friendly most of the time, angry when he needs to be. Those who have worked with him closely know him for his sarcastic attitude which some have been known to take offence to. Due to his high position he has been known to lose his temper and throw his weight around but mainly that is due to his high demanding job. Lower employees note that he is always friendly when he passes by, but know never to cross him. He has a tendency to have a lack luster attitude to authority and his higher ups, however his work skill.ethic usually make up for it.

Outside of work he is known as a loud member of his social group, always willing to have a good time and making others laugh. In his family life he is known to be a devoted husband/father. Although he sometimes insults his wife he does so in humor, and is very protective over her. He has started many fights over comments that have been taken the wrong way about his family.

He has no belief in "supernatural" or "aliens". He see's those who talk about monsters as idiots. In his mind everything has a rational explanation.

Skills: Mathematically minded, with an above average IQ. Known to keep a level head in high stake situations, and is known to be a great multitask-er. He is "OK" at hand to hand combat, through his years in the gym/boxing. He is known to be quiet technically gifted, often tinkering or "fixing" things at home or in the office.

Weaknesses : He has no proper combat experience. Never held or shot a gun, or been in a situation where he has actually been in physical danger from a weapon. On top of that he isnt a big fan of blood, and has a strong dislike for those he classes as "Holy Joe's" (Overly religious people). He considers religious people to be holding America back culturally, and often finds annoyance in those who thank god for everyday activities. (His opinions are not that of my own, encase anyone draws offense)

Motivations: Force to go down by this bosses. C&G under pressure from new's outlets, share holders, and missing workers family's was forced to send a higher representative to the town, as a sign of good will. In a press release, C&G stated that they believed they were not behind the incident, and too prove they are willing to do whatever is necessary to find out what, have sent a high ranking employee down to assess what has happened. Frank himself is not pleased at going down to what he considers "The ass end of nowhere" with "A bunch of hippies and gun jockeys", though he has kept that view to himself.

Frank grew up as the middle child to a middle class family. Though he doesn't often speak of his older brother and younger sister much now, they were quiet a close family, and usually still meet up for Christmas dinner. At the age of 15 Frank had endured a long term of bully, and decided that to gain confidence he would enroll in an after school boxing class. After several years practicing boxing he gained both physical strength and confidence, which helped him in both school and outside. Through his hard work at school Frank was discovered to have a slight above average IQ, which allowed him to go to his college of choice, Yale, much to the surprise of his family he assumed that he was dumb as nails. At Yale Frank studied business, and upon leaving was employed at C&G under the management training imitative.

At C&G Frank rose steadily through the ranks, mainly due to his intelligence, hard work, youth, but mostly his confidence. Using his confidence to his advantage, Frank made allies with a lot of the higher up bosses, often playing golf, tennis, or even just causally drinking with them. With allies in high places it wasn't long before Frank made the position of CFO.

Frank has now been the CFO for 4 years, and during his time he has made a name for himself as a boss who is smart, friendly most of the time, but can also be ruthless. He is well liked by most of his employees, usually going by the stance that if you work hard, we have no problems. He has quiet a sarcastic humor that occasionally catches others of-guard considering his high position. Using this humor he finds it easier to get along with lower level employees. Though he has been known to have a temper, he usually keeps it under wraps by taking it out on his punching bag or training at the gym, however there have been odd occasions where he as ripped an employee to shreds verbally.

Last week he was called into the share holders meeting, with the CEO and many members of the board of directors, where he was informed about the Holliman incident. C&G hold a large research and development site in Holliman, which has gone dark. He was informed that due to the nature of the incident, and the fact that it has the possibility of costing the company millions, he will be sent to Holliman to investigate. They also believe rival company's will use the incident to gain access to C&G files, and in order to prevent the leak of trade secrets, he will be forced to go down and collect any new research and bring it back. Though he is unhappy about his choice, Frank simply believes that either a electrical storm has caused the site to go dark, or worst case scenario, a chemical leak has killed off the population. Frank knows that it is very unlikely that C&G have anything to d with the incident, which is why he is willing to go down, to prove the company is not responsible.

Skills: Matthew possesses a bachelor’s in Psychology from Georgia State, which he used to apply for his current career. He has passed the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation academy after getting hired, where he was taught basic firearms, investigative, and driving tactics. He did well enough in his first year of employment, learning the basics of investigative work in the field and how to deal with suspects.

Weaknesses: While he is a decent marksman, he is completely horrible when it comes to close/unarmed combat. It’s not that he isn't fit; he just can’t time strike correctly. Adding on to this, he has an extremely low pain tolerance. Due to this, he tries to avoid close confrontation. He also tends to look down upon overly religious people as being idiots, but tried to keep it to himself. Also adding onto this, he isn't the sharpest tool in the shed.

Background: Matthew grew up in a home in Forsyth County, Georgia. He decided at a young age that he wanted to be an FBI agent. He really did try to do well in school, but always seemed to fall just short of getting all A’s. However, he never really had a disciplinary record and kept his head down. When he entered high school, he joined the Forsyth County Sheriff explorers in order to try and get experience. He ended up getting his act together in senior year and graduated with all A’s, getting into Georgia State.

Matthew picked psychology as his major, getting decent grades throughout college. After graduation, he looked up FBI careers only to discover there were no openings. Slightly crestfallen, he applied to several state police and bureau of investigation agencies in the South East, including the GBI and NCSBI. He got hired by the NCSBI before any of the others, resulting in him moving to NC and going to the academy. After graduating, he got assigned to the Raleigh post for his field training program, where he was involved in the apprehension of a serial killer. Since then, he’s had a largely uneventful career. Well, that was until he was assigned to Searchlight in order to assist with the investigation into how an entire town disappeared.

Identifying Traits and/or Features: He has unique, ice-cold, ice-blue eyes, and will often dress rather dramatically. Such as with black trench coats and black leather pants. Tattoos all up both of his arms also serve to make him stand out from others. His voice is usually quite cold when talking to a stranger, and he has a intimidating demeanor in general.

Personality:Leroy can be seen as rude or obnoxious to people who don't know him all that well, or if he doesn't like you. He has no patience for those he deems idiots, and will often just dismiss them. But deep down inside, once you get past the icy exterior, you'll find a caring man, one who cares about innocents as well as his friends.

Skills: Leroy's most defining skill is his marksmanship with a sniper rifle. Some say he could hit a fly at 50 yards with his rifle. It was an exaggeration, of course, but it just goes to show that he's skilled enough to be exaggerated. He is also skilled in hand-to-hand combat. His stealth skills are also notable, though he's not a master spy or anything like that.

Weaknesses: Due to an old injury, Leroy sometimes has difficulties breathing if he does too much for too long. He is also quite impulsive and can act before he thinks. Diplomacy is not his thing, and he will generally turn to action or violence before diplomacy, and this can lead to difficult situations.

Background: Leroy was raised by abusive parents, and with his sister. He would often take extra 'punishment' so that she wouldn't have to. As time went by, Leroy began to become closed off, keeping to himself more and more. The only person he would ever really talk to was his sister. First chance he got, he left, taking his sister with him, not caring that he would have to struggle to provide for her, especially since she had some mental issues. He learned some self-defense, and then taught her, as well.
Eventually, he got a job in the Norwegian military, and quickly became respected for his marksman skills. He rose through the ranks, and was eventually hired into the NSM (National Security Authority). One day, however, things went wrong on a mission. One of his men betrayed the squad, and it ended with all his men dead, and him nearly dead. After a while of being stuck in a hospital, he was deemed no longer fit for duty in the NSM, due to the injuries that would never fully heal. After being without a job for a while, the Norwegian Intelligence Service hired him as a sort of special agent, to go in to the field and gather information about noteworthy events happening in the world.


I feel like his background sounds maybe a little too much like something from a movie, but not sure what would work better......

Personality: He is a laid back and humorous soldier, known for his relaxed actions, even during on duty. However, at times, he can be serious and calculating when it comes to duty at well. He's nice.

Skills : He's a soldier, so he has skills in marksmanship and engineering as well as hand to hand combat. Graduated from UNC Charlotte of William States Lee College of Engineering from Mechanical and Civil Engineering.

He's been in combat before, deployed in Battle of Baqubah and Operation Arrowhead Ripper, so he himself has endured battlefield especially in a tough environment. He became particularly more experienced in combat and military skills.

Weaknesses : He's not a good hand to hand combatant, as he's more of an engineer and less of a fighter, although his marksmanship compensates his lack of close combat. He's also lacking any leadership skills, so he struggles with himself and his squad.

Brad was born in Holliman as the son of the researchers, both of his parents worked in the USA nuclear program before settled in Holliman after their retirement, and worked as owners of local grocery store in Holliman. In school, Brad was known for his class-clown personality, albeit he's also a smart student at his time, gained several A scores. In his high school, he met his sweetheart Clarice, the daughter of the former USMC Colonel settled in Holliman. After graduation, both he and Clarice went into UNC Charlotte, with Clarice went into school of education. After graduation, they got married and shortly after that, Brad went into National Guard as a part-time member of the 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team.

During his service and in between where he has a son with his wife, he and his brother, Sam, both serving in the Battle of Baqubah and Operation Arrowhead Ripper as well as getting home to NC again after the battle and subsequent activities in NC. On the fateful night, the brothers were supposed to went into Holliman together, but Brad was called into service as there were some problems with the National Guard base where he and Sam was located.

Of course, when the town went disappeared without a trace, Brad became worried, though eventually calmed down and determined to went into Holliman to finds out what happens. So when the Task Force Searchlight was formed, he immediately as well joined the Task Force in order to finds out the whereabouts of his family.
