If they're banning officers from joining the Klan, we should also ban them from joining any left-wing communist organisations as well. Fuck the extreme right and the extreme left.

The Ku Klux Klan is an American terrorist organization founded on the ideas of racism. Any individual who is a member of the KKK is in support of terrorism and racism, whether they acknowledge this or not. An officer of the law is in direct contradiction with his duty if he/she is also a member of a terrorist organization. As such the policeman in question should be fired.

The Communist Party USA explicitly rejects the use of violence.

Mm I'd say you don't really have those freedoms as a member of the police force already. You can't form a union, so I don't see why you should be allowed to be in any pseudo-political organisation (or in fact hold 'mainstream' party membership or run as a candidate while in the police).

As long as their membership doesn't infringe on their duties, to uphold the law and protect citizens from crime regardless of their ethnicity. And, obviously, as long as the Klan isn't considered a criminal organization within their jurisdiction.

In other words, as long as the officer in question doesn't break any laws and fulfills his duties professionally, it's nobody's business what he does off-duty as long as it stays that way.

And were once terrorist organizations? That seems to be taking it a bit too far. A lot of things were once terrorist organizations. That would mean all left-wing police officers would be laid off, all police officers that believe in communism would be laid off, and probably many more.
