2090: The World the Further Future(OOC/OPEN)

Welcome to the Future...

The future is one in which Imperialism has returned in a big way, after the world fell apart in the 2030s after the gulf oil fields peaked and the global oil supply started running low. The first major casualties in the resource wars were the developing nations in Africa, who could not assure deliveries of food and medical supplies to a land that was wracked by an explosion of Ebola in the 2020s, and these nations collapsed along tribal lines, except where warlords controlled the land. The next place to fall to the wars was Asia, where India, Pakistan, and China fought over Kashmir, leading to a MAD situation when all three parties threatened nuclear warfare. A peace settlement was reached in 2035, but all three were exhausted from the war, and Pakistan was the first to fall, torn apart by ethnic divisions, India was able to soldier on for a few more months, but followed Pakistan in the opening years of 2036. The disestablishment of India was more formal, but when the states of India declared independence ethnic fighting ensued. China was able to largely stay intact, but ceded Tibet, as the costs of occupying the land were unsustainable. The states of Central Asia simply fell into squabbling tribes after the governments lost their main source of income from fossil fuels.

As the fuel crisis worsened, more states fell. The UN shrank daily. But a solution was quickly developed, something that was already possible, but inefficient. Nuclear fusion was quickly developed from something simply experimental to something that was widespread. It seemed the energy crisis was over, at least for the states of the first world. But this was not so. As conditions worsened in the Third World, refugees flooded in, hearing rumors of unlimited free energy and wanting a better life. This increased load on the first world nearly tanked some nations, riots were a constant in the First world, especially after the EU officially switched to Fusion power. The answer to the overworked west came twofold. Fusion allowed two options to be pursued, Human Cloning and Fighting Robots. Both of these were deployed by various nations, but in general the national governments emphasized Cloning, while smaller city and state governments used Robots. But even with these new weapons, the failure of governments that happened across the world continued, but in a more dramatic way. Riots broke out in major immigration cities, and both national and local governments deployed their new units. These riots would pass their names to the history books - Houston, Marseilles, Gibraltar, London, Berlin - as the bloodiest quellings of all time. Thousands died when the riot units opened fire, hundreds more died when they were trampled by fleeing rioters. These riots also ignited what would become the end of the states that remained afloat after the initial crisis. The brutal crackdown lead to further riots, initiating a brutal cycle of violence, one that the remaining governments - already overtaxed since the initial crisis - could not handle. A second wave of government failures swept the globe, starting with the disbanding of the EU in 2038, and ending when the UN, which had dwindled since the beginning of the 2030s, officially disbanded. The final total of flags outside the UN building was two: the United States, which had stopped being truly united in 2038, and Canada, which had slowly declined since the Canadian Civil War in 2035, when Quebec violently declared independence.

After the disestablishment of the UN in 2040, the world fell into a period not like the European Dark Ages. Warlords and despots of all stripes fought over vital infrastructure, cloning facilities, factories, mines, anything that could be used to enhance their position. These wars continued for the entire decade of 2050, finally ending when new states and empires formed, policing their borders and re-establishing the rule of law that had been forsaken in the decades prior. The beginning years of 2050 were ones of relative peace, as the new nations and empires began to contact each other peacefully, and the nations of the world recognized a dichotomy- the nations of the world were either large, territorial empires who kept the peace through the used of cloned warriors, and Megacity-states, who protected their massive urban sprawl with strong walls and robotic units. All of these states recognized one thing from the past, that resources were running low, and that the only way to get more of the vital resources that their populations needed was up, out of the bounds of Earth, into the solar system, and hopefully beyond. As the eyes of the world turned upward, the arms followed. While the orbits of Earth had been quiet since the satellites, whose operators were either dead or gone, had de-orbited, their places were taken by new installations, ones that could not only examine and relay information back to Earth, but also help with the growing plans of the leaders on Earth. In 2060, the world was in a tenuous peace, as the exploration of space began again, and Earth's resources slowly drained.

But this tenuous peace could never last. Man is a territorial animal, and when he feels threatened, he will defend his territory. Not a year after the world recovered from the wars of the past, it was plunged into conflict again. This war goes by many names, the Theocrat's War, the Grand Crusade, World War Three. But most call it the Technocratic War, and it was the most brutal war in all of recorded history.

The War began in a surprise attack in which Technocratic forces knock out Prussian main navy ports however it isn't as easy as planned as the tides mean simultaneous attack was out: initial attack on southern ports were successful however by time northern attack was launched Prussians were ready and allied navy suffered much larger casualties than expected. Despite this, the allied forces declared this as a tremendous victory as the primary goals were achieved. Various nations across the world including Switzerland condemns this surprise attack for lack of declaration of war (war was technically declared five minute before first attacks).

5 days later, British, European and American forces numbering 5 million march ahead via Northern Germany in their narrow front strategy while Prussian forces attempt to strike at the flanks which takes greater than expected casualties reducing the numbers to just 3 million by the time they arrive in Berlin. Switzerland comes to aid of Prussia, being first country to declare war on allies resulting central allies forces being diverted to contain Switzerland. On the south the forces numbering 3 million advance towards Rome.

Within 20 days, a gas attack on Germany takes place and the northern forces march in unopposed as planned. Allied commanders meet and celebrate their victory. One day later, when Berliners wake up they found themselves under hostile forces however rather than surrendering as expected they fought back. Seeing this, the politicians and their families are ordered to evacuate but the people attack the convoy and free the Prussian leaders. Allied forces, rather than fighting in Berlin decide to start a fire to kill as many enemies as possible as they withdraw and surround the town killing anyone who attempts to run from the flames.

35 days into the war, 60% of Berlin is dead (25% from gas, 30% from the fire and 5% when they attempted to escape) before outraged Persia declares war on allied forces for gross disregard of humanity. In meantime, British forces following orders of Cambridge (against orders from united command) burn down Rome. American and European government is appalled but president Shadak refuses to apologize declaring that this marked the end of oppression of Christianity that it exerted for centuries.

2 months in, World is truly at war. Most theocracies and feudal states rally behind Prussia while most technocracies and fascists rally behind Allies (exceptions of course exist: India towards allies and Switzerland towards Prussia etc). Only sides not yet involved are corporate states, which too are providing services to highest bidder. Allied forces retreat from Berlin following counter attack. The allies have by now reached a second understanding, and are once again united in the conflict against the Prussians.

December 31, 2061: Battles have taken place, lives are lost and nothing of note takes place. There are few lines being pushed back and forth however by end of the year, the statement 'war will be easy and over in a month' has proven horrendously false. By end of the year, Allied forces largely have taken most of France although that is as far as it has gotten.

T+2 years: The Prussian alliance pushes back in America; South American forces make significant gains in west America for the Prussian alliance and focus shifts towards America. Both sides pour their forces to fight the war in American continent however to no avail; the west America falls. Kaiser Frederick declares 'end of oppressive technocrats is days away'. This is when the technocracies start to experiment with clones for super soldiers with hoping to end the war.

T+3 years: War that was supposed to last a month has lasted for three days and now even technocracies are putting soldiers in the ground as resources for production of robots get scarce. This is also first time in history that the war extends out of Earth: British forces attack the Prussian settlement in moon after having depleted all the resources in its territory. Unprepared the Prussian settlement falls however this marks the third shift. Advances in space never seen before occur as states rush out to produce better spaceships for combating in outer space. Several space stations are simply blown out of orbit at cost of millions of lives.

T+8 years: Governments now finally, having drained resources from Earth and Moon, start to realize that negotiations are needed. However neither side is willing to admit this; both being too prideful and both fallen victim to sunken cost fallacy. While the governments are involved in internal debate regarding possibility for negotiations however Switzerland detonates electromagnetic bomb over West Europe: sending the lights out over Britain, Europe and France. This leads to swift advance of Switzerland over France, taking out unprepared forces of allies in France.

T+9 years: Another narrow front coastal assault to Berlin is successful. Rebuilt capital of Prussia is once again under occupation and Prussian alliance appeared to be in brink of collapse. However it was a ruse as seen when president Shadak arrive at Berlin to lift morale of the troops and civilians alike. A suicide bomber takes out the British president while the Prussian forces take back the city which was at brink of celebration.

T+9 years 1 month: In Britain, people are in outrage over what they saw as Prussian perfidy and president's sister Caiatris standing in platform of vengeance against Prussia is elected by default when no one stands against a candidate commanding 98% support in polls. However this was not an election ruse: she truly held entire Prussian state responsible for death of her brother. Once she came to power, senate was effectively bypassed through referendum that allowed her to issue binding executive decrees for duration of war and went on to suppress any internal peace movements with brutal efficiency; using the chips embedded in brains (for virtual reality) to extract memories and even antiwar thoughts being punishable by summary execution. The millions of executed was a symbol for what was to come in Europe.

T+9 years 8 months: Against advice of military ranks and after fierce debates between three leaders, Caiatris makes executive decision to abandon aim of divided Europe and decides to settle for a Europe that is destroyed and orders biochemical and nuclear attack on the Prussian civilians; military leadership with ethical objections are systematically removed. After fierce protests from European council, she hands over medicine to cure the plague for citizens of Federal Republic of Europe with agreement that Prussian lands won't be taken by Europe. Similar attacks then took place in other parts of the world but they never rivaled one against Prussia.

T+10 years: Following devastation and mass deaths, agreement of Prussian surrender is signed in background of radiation that spreads the continent as well as the biochemical agents. War that was supposed to last a month lasted for eleven years and cost lives of billions. Caiatris need not have worried about Europe being occupied after the war, continental Europe was uninhabitable. War had been won. Mission accomplished.

At the end of the War, the survivors came together to total the damage, and it was massive. Satellites showed massive expansions in the deserts and massive flooding of low-lying areas by the ice-caps finishing their long decline. Whole cities were nothing but rubble. Once beautiful vistas and natural wonders were destroy to fight the war. The skies above became increasingly overcast, dropping more and more rain, but never where it was needed. Expeditions into Europe, where most of the fighting took place, found little more than a still barren waste in the best locations, and the worst were little more than radioactive boreholes. Everywhere those lucky survivors looked, one thing became clear - the Earth, humanity's cradle for so long - was falling to pieces. And once again, the eyes of the world turned skyward, not out of greed, but out of desperation.

The remaining nations of the world, those that were either wise enough to stay out of the war and prepare for the destruction it would cause, or those who were lucky enough to be spared were quick to invest in space research and infrastructure to get into space effectively. This work by public institutions was aided by private groups, both companies and private scientific institutes contributed to the research. A global space program was quickly established when these projects bore fruit. Broadcasts were sent worldwide, asking for volunteers for colonies on the Moon and Mars. The slots were taken within the first month of open registration, and by 2073, two years after the War, the first colonization ships departed GSP space stations in Earth orbit headed for Mars and the Moon with a full community of 2,500 on each ship. These colonization ships would also serve as the central hub for the colonies, who would build out from the central core with modules that would be brought in later. Most of these colonies were successes, and they kicked off a new wave of human exploration as more colonies were established and the older ones expanded. By 2075, the First Wave colonies had grown from small towns to sprawling, connected Metropolises, and many declared full independence from Earth, forming the Martian Colonial League on Mars and the Lunar Colonial League on the Moon. These two leagues would later join together with each other and the Global Space Program - which had become something of a pseudo-UN - to form the Common Council, a forum for all nations to voice complaints and resolve issues peacefully. The Council would find success in cleaning up parts of Europe, and preventing a war between two Martian superpowers. Though, the Council failed in the prevention of a war on the Moon, and also failed when an outbreak of Influenza spread across Earth, leading some to question the ability of the Council.

As the populations of Earth recovered, more expeditions into space were mounted, sending expeditions into the Asteroid Belt and even into the Outer Solar System. It was in the Third Wave of Colonization that Humanity would be be joined by another intelligence. Not one from the stars, but one made from the precursor quantum computer systems from before the Technocratic War. The Singularity, a thinking, learning computer, was made. It's making was quite an accident, no one intended for a computer to gain sentience, but as hardware improved, so did software. Once one sufficiently advanced system gained self-awareness, the world began to fear. More of these advanced systems gained self-awareness, but to the collective relief of humanity, these systems valued the company of not just other hardware, but the "Wetware" intelligence of Humanity. These thinking machines were quick to seize upon the ideas of space travel, and within the year 2080, fully Digitized nations had been formed not only on Earth, but in the solar system as well.

And so we arrive at the current date of 2090 A.D., and the world is at peace - for now. Humanity has begun it's spread into the stars, colonizing the Solar System, but as Humanity's horizon's broaden, so does it's collective greed. Greed for resources lead to both the rise and fall of Empire in the past, and even though the Common Council can regulate most affairs, it cannot stop the greed of humanity. Only time will tell if this greed will lead to yet another cataclysmic war.

Dictatorship

The most basic form of government, one man rule. Under a typical Dictatorship, the press is basically only a propaganda set of tools for the state, the military and nationalism are both highly prized, and people are tools of the state. Though this still of rule has been seen many, many times in the past, it has not remained stagnant. As the human race recovered from the Technocratic War, many of the scattered survivors in the wastes of the world united under local strong-men who lead them either to their deaths, for those who wished to remain in the wastes, or out of the wastes. Some of these groups were found by the GSP, and many accepted the offer of heading to Mars, as part of the First Wave of Martian Settlers. Thus, many of the longer existing colonies on Mars are dictatorships or descended from them.

Republic

While initially faltering after the Resource Crisis of the 21st Century, after the Technocratic War, Republics began to reform. While much simpler compared to those Pre-Crisis, they were some of the first actual representative systems to be brought back from the past. The New Republics have simplified voting and elections, and generally prioritize civic freedoms. These systems quickly took charge in of a large amount of the remaining nations, and a smaller portion of the First Wave to Mars. The Ideals of the Republic also spread to the Moon, to the point were most independent colonies on Earth's Satellite are Republics.

Technocracy

After the war of their namesake, most Technocratic governments either fell directly to the War or to the chaos after. Though some were able to remain safe throughout the wars and it's aftermath, and became major contributors to the GSP. Their message of technological progress was spread in the Second Wave of Human Colonization. A brief description of the Technocracy is a state ruled by Specialists in each field of governance, relies on a fully Robotic military, and supports the "Hard" sciences and the STEM professions more than "Soft" sciences and the Arts.

Consumerist State

One of the two kinds of governments descended from the Corpocracies of the past, the Consumerist State is Karl Marx's nightmare. Repression of the worker is everywhere and obvious to visitors. Those inside one of these states are either Consumers - useful only for their labor - or Capital - who run everything and make all of the money. Consumers are kept in their place by various opiates: VR simulations, drugs, propaganda, and last but not least, actual repression via laws and police. The production of these states either go to the Capital, who take the best products and distribute the rest - for a cost, or are exported to make more money.

Syndicalist State

The second type of government descended from the Corpocracy, the Sydicalist State is the exact opposite of it's Consumerist brother. Where the Consumerist exploits ruthlessly, the Syndicalist uses sustainably. Where the Consumerist oppresses, the Sydicalist accepts. Where the Consumerist divides, the Sydicalist combines. Where Consumerists are peaceful and broadly isolationist, the Syndicalist wishes to spread the Revolution. All of these create a state where all are considered equal, one where the worker and farmer are protected, and one that has a certain volatility to it. Syndicalist states, as opposed to the stableness of the Consumerist system, often Syndicalist states will have uprisings against perceived traitors of the Revolution, mass book burnings and file deletions of Capitalist literature and things the Proletariat deems "Reactionary." This fervor is often contained by massive orders of military equipment and large recruitment drives, and these orders are quickly met by the Proletariat, eager to free his brethren now, rather than later.

Digitized State

The Digitized state is the newest kind of government, used by the newest kind of intelligence. The new Robotic intelligences, using their Quantum tunneled networking, are able to control things at an extreme accuracy from very far away. Their robotic forms also allow these Digitized states to avoid many of the problems of Humanity, so Crime and Corruptions are essentially non-issues. Though these Robotic forms are much more attuned to their feelings, and thus they search for fulfillment in many topics at once, and this search for what is essentially a hobby will consume the minds of many of the intelligences, lowering happiness. And while disorder usually doesn't take physical form, disagreements are common and slow the collective systems down.

Neo-Monarchism

Descended directly from the Neo-Feudal states of the past, Neo-Monarchies are a continuation of the theme of Hereditary Nobility. Post-Technocratic War, Neo-Monarchism saw a great surge in interest, especially as the nations of Earth spread into the Solar system. The ability to appoint a local governor as the leader of a far off colony and not have to worry about elections causing disloyalty appealed to many rulers. The Monarch's position as appointed by a deity also allowed for a stable state, and the fact that the title was hereditary also increased stability, and the appeal to many. Although, being only accountable to someone you probably won't see in this life doesn't make for an especially peaceful form of government.

Technological Information

From a modern-day standpoint, Technology has advanced a vast amount compared to now. Robots are intelligent, colonies are in the Solar System, and space-ships are both armed and ever present. To fully get a description of the technology of the future, we need to divide it into two parts, Military and Domestic.

Military Tech

In military terms, technology is very advanced. Common weapons are hand-held Gauss Rifles and rapid-fire Laser Pulse Rifles, both are standard issue in many forms across the solar system, and both have seen their fair shared of combat. Personal armor has advanced as well, now being made of tungsten alloy and containing a personal shielding device. Human forces are usually supplemented or supplanted by Robots. Robotic armored units, resembling the tanks of the early 21st century, are common in the battlefields, as are more mobile "HuverVs," hovering armored discs that have both installed autocannons and gunports for infantry inside to use. Spaceships have reached around 1 mile in average length, and are both well armed and protected, with Gauss Cannons and Lasers being common weapons, and shielding being standard across all spaceships.

Domestic Tech

Compared to the early 21st century, Domestic technology has progressed some, but not as much as the military. Televisions, the Home Computer, and the Internet have pretty much fused into one all-round system, and all of these are set up on a Quantum tunnel system, allowing instant information travel between the huge distances of the Solar system. The Washer and Drier have combined as well, allowing for one continuous process for clothes washing, one that can save time and water. Food has been miniaturized for those who will be in space for a while, or simply do not wish to eat, in the form of small patches that provide both vitamins, minerals, and calories to the body, through direct contact with the tongue.

A lot of that is barren, but okay.

The best I can do is Britland + a few Lunar/Martian/Jovian colonies.

Corrupt Dictatorship

Postby Senkaku » Sat Jun 14, 2014 6:50 pm

Nation Name: the Empire of the Great Zheng/Empire of China
Nation Type: territorial empire
Capital City: Beijing
Government Type: Neo-monarchist
Head of State: the Chéngxīn Emperor
Claimed Territory: modern China, Mongolia, Nepal, Bhutan, Northeast India, Bangladesh, Tibet, the Amur Basin, North Korea, South & East China Seas
Zheng China also has colonies in Earth Orbit, on Luna, several asteroids (seven of which have been transformed into bubble habitats or small O'Neill Cylinders), and Callisto.
State/National Religion: none
Dominant Religion: officially, none. In reality, various brands of Buddhism and Confucianism.
Minority Religion(s): Taoism, Tibetan Buddhism, traditional ancestor worship
Population: 995 million (not counting the people of the Empire's various space colonies, Chinese Bengal, Mongolia, Tibet, Kyrgyzstan, and Taiwan, who are not considered full citizens)
Cloning?: Human cloning is used but severely curtailed and Chinese clones are heavily modified to ensure they remain peaceful and submissive.
Military Organization: The Zheng army is divided into the Red, Blue, White, Green, and Yellow Banners, the People's Army, and the Flying Dragon Army. The Flying Dragon Army is composed of the best units from each banner and is the Emperor's personal guard, as well as providing security for the Imperial Palace and the Imperial family. The Flying Dragon Army also runs China's strategic missile forces and NBC deterrent. The Banners are elite, highly mobile forces, each consisting of around 100,000 soldiers. Each Banner is based in a different area of the empire and they are some of the nation's finest troops, besides the Flying Dragons, with the best equipment and training. Many of the soldiers are younger children of the aristocracy. They also run their own naval squadrons and air units.
The People's Army is the main force, consisting of a standing body of volunteers who receive small salaries and number around two million. In times of war, activating the reserves can raise this number to up to seven million men, while the draft can bring it even higher. The standing force of the People's Army is not as well-trained or equipped as a Banner, but nor is it neglected, and morale is good. Between their numbers and the fact that their equipment is modern and they have decent training, the People's Army are a formidable force. The People's Navy and Air Force are considered part of this organization. Zheng commanders are fond of using overwhelming numbers, be it tanks, soldiers, or robots, and do not shy away from the use of tactical nuclear warheads, military nanobots, or chemical weapons. However, due to the lingering fear of disease in all Chinese caused by the H4N4 pandemic, the Zheng have liquidated their biological weapons and placed a moratorium by direct imperial edict on any sort of weaponized microbes or development of such, whether it be by citizens or foreigners.
Military Size: standing 2.65 million, reserve ~4.35 million
Fleet Size: total 211 ships, including four carriers and nine SSGNs.
Air-force size: ~3,500 aircraft
Space Fleet size: 144 civilian/commercial/scientific craft, 37 military vessels
National Flag: one sec

Primary Culture: Han Chinese
Accepted Cultures: Chinese minorities (Muslims, Manchus, Hakka, etc.), Uighur, Turkish, Mongolian, Taiwanese, Bengali, Korean
Other Cultures: none, really
Primary Import(s): genetic cultures, silver iodide, deuterium, tritium
Primary Export(s): rare earths, fossil fuels, mass-produced goods

Brief (Paragraph) Description of your nation's history since the 2020s: In 2023, as China's economic growth began slowing and the country's position began looking shakier, Xi Jinping stepped down and was succeeded by Wu Lao, who would prove to be a disaster for China and eventually bring about the collapse of the People's Republic. Lao did not continue with Xi's highly successful environmental policies that he enacted towards the end of his term, and also halted the naval expansion Xi had begun, leaving China with three carriers- Liaoning, Sun Yat-sen, and Zhou Enlai. In 2029, China and India began a short border conflict over Aksai Chin and several other disputed areas. China's then-ally, Pakistan, which at the time was on very shaky ground in terms of its government's stability, escalated the conflict in an attempt to unify the populace against the Indian menace. Pakistani forces managed to successfully sweep Indian troops out of Jammu and Kashmir, but were beaten back with heavy losses in unsuccessful attacks on the Punjab and Gujarat. China condemned Pakistan's moves and had its puppet regime in North Korea offer, bizarrely, to be a moderator for peace negotiations.
Pakistan's government, meanwhile, collapsed and was replaced by a military junta, which rejected China's offer and then used tactical nuclear weapons to break through Indian lines in Gujarat. China, shocked and horrified, declared war on Pakistan, as the border fighting with India had largely settled down. The PLA quickly drove deep into Northern Pakistan, and was only a few kilometers from Islamabad when Pakistan threatened to launch strategic missiles unless India and China backed down. By this time India had taken Karachi and was advancing on Multan. India and China stopped for several days, and then airstrikes and saboteurs proceeded to destroy the launch facilities for Pakistan's nuclear weapons.
However, a new provocation in Arunachal Pradesh would soon turn the two allies on one another. Several Indian soldiers, visiting a Chinese town, were arrested, convicted and sentenced to death for the brutal gang-rape and murder of a Chinese woman. Chinese soldiers, angry about this, apparently shot and killed several Indian border guards. Both sides bungled their diplomacy, and within a month, the Himalayas and Northeastern India were battlegrounds as the two largest nations in the world clashed in a titanic battle. Chinese missiles and carriers smashed the Indian Navy at the Battle of the Andamans, and the Chinese managed to blitz through all of Northeast India. However, their forces in the Himalaya passes took massive casualties to the tune of a quarter million dead or wounded trying to force their way onto the Gangetic Plain, and China had trouble maintaining air superiority. Pakistan managed to retake much of its lost territory and occasionally threw a jab in, but mostly was simply an additional battleground for the two Asian superpowers to squabble over as they chose. Bangladesh offered to allow Indian troops to pass through, and was promptly taken over by the Chinese as well, who proceeded to begin dropping cruise missiles on Kolkata, Varanasi, and even Delhi. The Indian government relocated to Hyderabad, but they weren't safe even there- sea-launched cruise missiles pounded the city following the move. India, by now, was beginning to come apart, and China was beginning to deploy that era's first primitive combat robots as well, which proved highly effective on the battlefield. The Indians threatened the use of nuclear weapons, and China proceeded to publicly renounce its no-first-use policy. Both sides launched chemical and biological attacks as Chinese forces tried to push past Kolkata and towards Varanasi and Patna. Finally, after the brutal, three-way war ended thanks to the Taiwanese, who offered to mediate a peace settlement, more than three million Indians, two million Pakistanis, and a million Chinese were dead or wounded. Western Gujarat and much of Pakistan was a wasteland, parts of Kolkata were left uninhabitable thanks to chemical attacks, many farms had been destroyed, Chittagong, site of a major Chinese naval base for the war's later years, was a bombed-out ruin reminiscent of Ypres, and India and Pakistan both collapsed. Meanwhile, back at home, in 2033, when his term was due to end, Wu Lao dissolved the Politburo and the Standing Committee, had the National People's Congress declare him Chairman-For-Life, and instructed the overstretched Chinese military to invade Taiwan. Unsurprisingly, it was a bloodbath. China was forced to use chemical weapons on Kaohsiung to break Taiwanese forces there, lost a hundred thousand men in the initial invasion, and suffered severe damage to her Navy and Air Force. A Taiwanese chemical attack, in retaliation for Kaohsiung, also killed around fifty million people as several missiles fell on Guangzhou, Guilin, Xiamen, and Fuzhou. But, by the time the Indo-Chinese War had ended, Taiwan, too, was part of the PRC. Lao proceeded to invade the collapsing DPRK- the collapse of which killed an estimated two million Koreans- and Kyrgyzstan, and then Mongolia, Bhutan, and Nepal. By 2040, all these territories had been absorbed, though at great cost. China was in massive debt, her military was overstretched and battered, she had rebellions and a horrific famine that would proceed to kill hundreds of millions, she had pollution and environmental problems that had literally choked the Huang He, and in 2041, the Politburo had Wu Lao killed. But by then it was too late. A powerful group of PLA top brass and some top MSS agents defected to a rebellion, and China was falling. Tibet was relinquished as the country seemed to be teetering on the brink of collapse. The famine brought on by the Huang He's collapse and unrest and Taiwanese attacks in the south worsened, and more than two hundred million Chinese died or fled the country. The unrest was terrible, and perhaps a million more died in riots and short-lived rebellions. To add to the horrifying air of impending doom, plague, in the form of the H4N4 virus, which was related to influenza and SARS, swept the nation and then the globe, killing around fifty million in China alone, maiming countless others and forcing them to rely on oxygen tanks for the rest of their shortened and pain-filled lives, and caused the Nanjing Rebellion, a surreal event in which the seriously infected city declared itself an independent republic, seized a PLAAF base, bombed Shanghai, and was then burned by PLA quarantine forces, causing nearly five million more to be killed. China was drowning in her own blood, as those afflicted by H4N4 did. The population dropped below a billion as waves of refugees fled the country (although people in the new territories, not being counted as citizens, probably brought it back up).
The Politburo did not want to see everything China had done in the last half-century go to waste. They, in cooperation with some loyal and some rebel elements, launched an internal coup. The PRC was abolished in 2043 as the terrible famine and plague swept the already-battered nation, the Chóngrán Emperor placed on the throne, and the Empire of the Great Zheng pronounced.

For nine days, as internal restructuring took place, everyone, especially those in China's new territories, waited, wondering what would happen and would the new empire be broken up. Everyone was expecting the other shoe to drop at any moment, and China to be plunged into a bloody civil war that would bring down the curtain on the nation- a deadly trinity of plague, famine, and war that would stand a real chance of wiping the Han people out.
The other shoe, as far as anyone knows, just got stuck up there, because the Communist government just sort of disappeared into that of Zheng, as did the military and the MSS. There were a few very brief and bloody insurrections, but they were small-scale events, largely in the west. Zheng administrators now ran China, and an Emperor sat on the throne, but other than that, not much changed- until, that is, Chóngrán launched his Reform & Reconstruction policies and invaded Tibet, which only had nine months of independence before being brought back into the fold. Many Tibetans were very unhappy, but China has treated the Xizang Autonomous Region much better in recent years and allowed them more autonomy than the previous government ever did, so many Tibetans are no longer so furious. Chóngrán also began more effective quarantine measures for H4N4 (which still is not curable), and managed to end the horrific famine through cloud-seeding and desalination plants. For the last few decades, China has been busily cleaning up her mess, integrating her new territories, and trying to heal from a war that decimated an entire generation and their wallets. All told, the Wu Lao Wars cost China perhaps five million casualties and trillions of dollars, and it cost the territories she conquered perhaps a total of a further ten million casualties. The following Huang He Collapse and monsoon failures and the famine they brought about, and the H4N4 plague, put that number to shame. They caused more than a quarter billion deaths and caused around a hundred million people to flee China, and Chóngrán spent the entirety of his reign trying to repair a wounded nation, and trying to heal beyond that- for instance, it is thanks to his policies that the Huang He runs again, that the North China Plain aquifer is restored, that Chinese Bengal and the southern provinces can irrigate their crops when the monsoon fails, that the glaciers of the Himalayas still survive (albeit somewhat shrunken), and that China is not choking on an aerial stew of its own hydrocarbon wastes. He built the first Green Walls, massive lines of GMO trees that now shield Northern China from the wrath of the Gobi. Chóngrán also built the first of the Orbital Cities, vast space stations in High Earth Orbit that are now home to hundreds of thousands of people and a great deal of heavy industry. They also have smaller daughter-stations and satellites, which provide everything from Internet connectivity to hydroponic rice, and they in turn launched the ships that built the Lunar settlements, the Belt Habitats, and settled Callisto, much of which is now under marginal Zheng control- small habitats scatter the little moon's surface, and her population now totals nearly a quarter million. With energy from the South China Sea and East China Sea oil fields and fusion reactors and space-based solar arrays, China has rebuilt herself and returned fertility to a ruined land, and prosperity to a broken people. Chóngrán died, however, of Huntingdon's Disease, not even a year before the events of this RP, and his 18-year-old son has assumed the throne.

Libertarianism-Totalitarianism: The government is relatively libertarian, but will monitor its citizens whenever necessary.
Large ruling class-Small ruling class: The people of the TRA have a direct influence on their government.
Economic Equality-Economic Inequality: Economic equality is generally widespread.
State Economy-Laissez faire:
The TRA regulates businesses to make sure that they do not mistreat their workers. There is also a national minimum wage.
Moralistic-Ruthless: The TRA is somewhere in the middle.

Techophilic-Technophobic: We are always researching new technologies in an effort to stay ahead of other nations.
Diplomatic-Militaristic: Depends on the nation. Generally, we are open to diplomacy.
Rural-Urban: The TRA is highly urbanized.
Expansionist-Isolationist: The TRA is now very expansionist, as it wants to expand beyond its borders into space.

Brief (Paragraph) Description of your nation's history since the 2020s: After the United States fell apart in 2038, large civil wars between the states on the east coast began to break out. Finally, order was restored in 2044, when a peace treaty was signed and all of the states on the east coast agreed to unite into one nation- the TRA. Over the past decades, science had rapidly advanced and had become popular in the United States; thus, the TRA was a technocratic state, determined to use its technology to solidify its place as a superpower on the world stage. The TRA inherited some of the robotic soldiers that had been developed in the United States, as well as some of its military. The TRA refined these soldiers and then mass produced them, making them into a large army. In 2050, the TRA went to war with Quebec, which had violently broken away from Canada 15 years prior. As for the reason why, Quebec had been conducting raids on Vermont and Maine, which the TRA considered an act of war. After a 2 year conflict, the TRA violently crushed the Quebec resistance, and Quebec was absorbed into the TRA. The TRA used the oil fields in Quebec and the islands to the north of Quebec for fuel, and, combined with the fusion reactors, all the power needs of the TRA had been solved. The TRA then began developing its space fleet, which it planned to use to exploit the resources of other celestial bodies in the solar system.

The TRA managed to come out of the Technocratic War pretty much unscathed, but it was full of violence, riots, and looting. President Jane Armani was assassinated. However, the TRA managed to remain one of the only remaining technocracies in existence, and it has joined other nations in space colonization by building colonies on Mars, the Moon, and on the Moons of Jupiter and in orbit around Jupiter.
RP Example: I was in the previous 2060 AD RP.

They'd easier on Jupiter, and more profitable because you'd have so much spaceship and fusion fuel to refine.

Still going on. Just more "normal."
AH, PMT, some FT.

Your test scores indicate that you are an open-minded ultra-progressive; this is the political profile one might associate with a journalist. It appears that you are skeptical towards religion, and have a generally optimistic attitude towards humanity in general.
Your attitudes towards economics appear neither committedly capitalist nor socialist, and combined with your social attitudes this creates the picture of someone who would generally be described as a liberal.
To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, a considerate idealistic egalitarian with many strong convictions.
