Welcome to the Future...
The future is one in which Imperialism has returned in a big way, after the world fell apart in the 2030s after the gulf oil fields peaked and the global oil supply started running low. The first major casualties in the resource wars were the developing nations in Africa, who could not assure deliveries of food and medical supplies to a land that was wracked by an explosion of Ebola in the 2020s, and these nations collapsed along tribal lines, except where warlords controlled the land. The next place to fall to the wars was Asia, where India, Pakistan, and China fought over Kashmir, leading to a MAD situation when all three parties threatened nuclear warfare. A peace settlement was reached in 2035, but all three were exhausted from the war, and Pakistan was the first to fall, torn apart by ethnic divisions, India was able to soldier on for a few more months, but followed Pakistan in the opening years of 2036. The disestablishment of India was more formal, but when the states of India declared independence ethnic fighting ensued. China was able to largely stay intact, but ceded Tibet, as the costs of occupying the land were unsustainable. The states of Central Asia simply fell into squabbling tribes after the governments lost their main source of income from fossil fuels.
As the fuel crisis worsened, more states fell. The UN shrank daily. But a solution was quickly developed, something that was already possible, but inefficient. Nuclear fusion was quickly developed from something simply experimental to something that was widespread. It seemed the energy crisis was over, at least for the states of the first world. But this was not so. As conditions worsened in the Third World, refugees flooded in, hearing rumors of unlimited free energy and wanting a better life. This increased load on the first world nearly tanked some nations, riots were a constant in the First world, especially after the EU officially switched to Fusion power. The answer to the overworked west came twofold. Fusion allowed two options to be pursued, Human Cloning and Fighting Robots. Both of these were deployed by various nations, but in general the national governments emphasized Cloning, while smaller city and state governments used Robots. But even with these new weapons, the failure of governments that happened across the world continued, but in a more dramatic way. Riots broke out in major immigration cities, and both national and local governments deployed their new units. These riots would pass their names to the history books - Houston, Marseilles, Gibraltar, London, Berlin - as the bloodiest quellings of all time. Thousands died when the riot units opened fire, hundreds more died when they were trampled by fleeing rioters. These riots also ignited what would become the end of the states that remained afloat after the initial crisis. The brutal crackdown lead to further riots, initiating a brutal cycle of violence, one that the remaining governments - already overtaxed since the initial crisis - could not handle. A second wave of government failures swept the globe, starting with the disbanding of the EU in 2038, and ending when the UN, which had dwindled since the beginning of the 2030s, officially disbanded. The final total of flags outside the UN building was two: the United States, which had stopped being truly united in 2038, and Canada, which had slowly declined since the Canadian Civil War in 2035, when Quebec violently declared independence.
After the disestablishment of the UN in 2040, the world fell into a period not like the European Dark Ages. Warlords and despots of all stripes fought over vital infrastructure, cloning facilities, factories, mines, anything that could be used to enhance their position. These wars continued for the entire decade of 2050, finally ending when new states and empires formed, policing their borders and re-establishing the rule of law that had been forsaken in the decades prior. The beginning years of 2050 were ones of relative peace, as the new nations and empires began to contact each other peacefully, and the nations of the world recognized a dichotomy- the nations of the world were either large, territorial empires who kept the peace through the used of cloned warriors, and Megacity-states, who protected their massive urban sprawl with strong walls and robotic units. All of these states recognized one thing from the past, that resources were running low, and that the only way to get more of the vital resources that their populations needed was up, out of the bounds of Earth, into the solar system, and hopefully beyond. As the eyes of the world turned upward, the arms followed. While the orbits of Earth had been quiet since the satellites, whose operators were either dead or gone, had de-orbited, their places were taken by new installations, ones that could not only examine and relay information back to Earth, but also help with the growing plans of the leaders on Earth. In 2060, the world was in a tenuous peace, as the exploration of space began again, and Earth's resources slowly drained.
But this tenuous peace could never last. Man is a territorial animal, and when he feels threatened, he will defend his territory. Not a year after the world recovered from the wars of the past, it was plunged into conflict again. This war goes by many names, the Theocrat's War, the Grand Crusade, World War Three. But most call it the Technocratic War, and it was the most brutal war in all of recorded history.
At the end of the War, the survivors came together to total the damage, and it was massive. Satellites showed massive expansions in the deserts and massive flooding of low-lying areas by the ice-caps finishing their long decline. Whole cities were nothing but rubble. Once beautiful vistas and natural wonders were destroy to fight the war. The skies above became increasingly overcast, dropping more and more rain, but never where it was needed. Expeditions into Europe, where most of the fighting took place, found little more than a still barren waste in the best locations, and the worst were little more than radioactive boreholes. Everywhere those lucky survivors looked, one thing became clear - the Earth, humanity's cradle for so long - was falling to pieces. And once again, the eyes of the world turned skyward, not out of greed, but out of desperation.
The remaining nations of the world, those that were either wise enough to stay out of the war and prepare for the destruction it would cause, or those who were lucky enough to be spared were quick to invest in space research and infrastructure to get into space effectively. This work by public institutions was aided by private groups, both companies and private scientific institutes contributed to the research. A global space program was quickly established when these projects bore fruit. Broadcasts were sent worldwide, asking for volunteers for colonies on the Moon and Mars. The slots were taken within the first month of open registration, and by 2073, two years after the War, the first colonization ships departed GSP space stations in Earth orbit headed for Mars and the Moon with a full community of 2,500 on each ship. These colonization ships would also serve as the central hub for the colonies, who would build out from the central core with modules that would be brought in later. Most of these colonies were successes, and they kicked off a new wave of human exploration as more colonies were established and the older ones expanded. By 2075, the First Wave colonies had grown from small towns to sprawling, connected Metropolises, and many declared full independence from Earth, forming the Martian Colonial League on Mars and the Lunar Colonial League on the Moon. These two leagues would later join together with each other and the Global Space Program - which had become something of a pseudo-UN - to form the Common Council, a forum for all nations to voice complaints and resolve issues peacefully. The Council would find success in cleaning up parts of Europe, and preventing a war between two Martian superpowers. Though, the Council failed in the prevention of a war on the Moon, and also failed when an outbreak of Influenza spread across Earth, leading some to question the ability of the Council.
As the populations of Earth recovered, more expeditions into space were mounted, sending expeditions into the Asteroid Belt and even into the Outer Solar System. It was in the Third Wave of Colonization that Humanity would be be joined by another intelligence. Not one from the stars, but one made from the precursor quantum computer systems from before the Technocratic War. The Singularity, a thinking, learning computer, was made. It's making was quite an accident, no one intended for a computer to gain sentience, but as hardware improved, so did software. Once one sufficiently advanced system gained self-awareness, the world began to fear. More of these advanced systems gained self-awareness, but to the collective relief of humanity, these systems valued the company of not just other hardware, but the "Wetware" intelligence of Humanity. These thinking machines were quick to seize upon the ideas of space travel, and within the year 2080, fully Digitized nations had been formed not only on Earth, but in the solar system as well.
And so we arrive at the current date of 2090 A.D., and the world is at peace - for now. Humanity has begun it's spread into the stars, colonizing the Solar System, but as Humanity's horizon's broaden, so does it's collective greed. Greed for resources lead to both the rise and fall of Empire in the past, and even though the Common Council can regulate most affairs, it cannot stop the greed of humanity. Only time will tell if this greed will lead to yet another cataclysmic war.

Neo-Monarchism
The most basic form of government, one man rule. Under a typical Dictatorship, the press is basically only a propaganda set of tools for the state, the military and nationalism are both highly prized, and people are tools of the state. Though this still of rule has been seen many, many times in the past, it has not remained stagnant. As the human race recovered from the Technocratic War, many of the scattered survivors in the wastes of the world united under local strong-men who lead them either to their deaths, for those who wished to remain in the wastes, or out of the wastes. Some of these groups were found by the GSP, and many accepted the offer of heading to Mars, as part of the First Wave of Martian Settlers. Thus, many of the longer existing colonies on Mars are dictatorships or descended from them.

While initially faltering after the Resource Crisis of the 21st Century, after the Technocratic War, Republics began to reform. While much simpler compared to those Pre-Crisis, they were some of the first actual representative systems to be brought back from the past. The New Republics have simplified voting and elections, and generally prioritize civic freedoms. These systems quickly took charge in of a large amount of the remaining nations, and a smaller portion of the First Wave to Mars. The Ideals of the Republic also spread to the Moon, to the point were most independent colonies on Earth's Satellite are Republics.

After the war of their namesake, most Technocratic governments either fell directly to the War or to the chaos after. Though some were able to remain safe throughout the wars and it's aftermath, and became major contributors to the GSP. Their message of technological progress was spread in the Second Wave of Human Colonization. A brief description of the Technocracy is a state ruled by Specialists in each field of governance, relies on a fully Robotic military, and supports the "Hard" sciences and the STEM professions more than "Soft" sciences and the Arts.

One of the two kinds of governments descended from the Corpocracies of the past, the Consumerist State is Karl Marx's nightmare. Repression of the worker is everywhere and obvious to visitors. Those inside one of these states are either Consumers - useful only for their labor - or Capital - who run everything and make all of the money. Consumers are kept in their place by various opiates: VR simulations, drugs, propaganda, and last but not least, actual repression via laws and police. The production of these states either go to the Capital, who take the best products and distribute the rest - for a cost, or are exported to make more money.

The second type of government descended from the Corpocracy, the Sydicalist State is the exact opposite of it's Consumerist brother. Where the Consumerist exploits ruthlessly, the Syndicalist uses sustainably. Where the Consumerist oppresses, the Sydicalist accepts. Where the Consumerist divides, the Sydicalist combines. Where Consumerists are peaceful and broadly isolationist, the Syndicalist wishes to spread the Revolution. All of these create a state where all are considered equal, one where the worker and farmer are protected, and one that has a certain volatility to it. Syndicalist states, as opposed to the stableness of the Consumerist system, often Syndicalist states will have uprisings against perceived traitors of the Revolution, mass book burnings and file deletions of Capitalist literature and things the Proletariat deems "Reactionary." This fervor is often contained by massive orders of military equipment and large recruitment drives, and these orders are quickly met by the Proletariat, eager to free his brethren now, rather than later.

The Digitized state is the newest kind of government, used by the newest kind of intelligence. The new Robotic intelligences, using their Quantum tunneled networking, are able to control things at an extreme accuracy from very far away. Their robotic forms also allow these Digitized states to avoid many of the problems of Humanity, so Crime and Corruptions are essentially non-issues. Though these Robotic forms are much more attuned to their feelings, and thus they search for fulfillment in many topics at once, and this search for what is essentially a hobby will consume the minds of many of the intelligences, lowering happiness. And while disorder usually doesn't take physical form, disagreements are common and slow the collective systems down.

Descended directly from the Neo-Feudal states of the past, Neo-Monarchies are a continuation of the theme of Hereditary Nobility. Post-Technocratic War, Neo-Monarchism saw a great surge in interest, especially as the nations of Earth spread into the Solar system. The ability to appoint a local governor as the leader of a far off colony and not have to worry about elections causing disloyalty appealed to many rulers. The Monarch's position as appointed by a deity also allowed for a stable state, and the fact that the title was hereditary also increased stability, and the appeal to many. Although, being only accountable to someone you probably won't see in this life doesn't make for an especially peaceful form of government.

From a modern-day standpoint, Technology has advanced a vast amount compared to now. Robots are intelligent, colonies are in the Solar System, and space-ships are both armed and ever present. To fully get a description of the technology of the future, we need to divide it into two parts, Military and Domestic.
In military terms, technology is very advanced. Common weapons are hand-held Gauss Rifles and rapid-fire Laser Pulse Rifles, both are standard issue in many forms across the solar system, and both have seen their fair shared of combat. Personal armor has advanced as well, now being made of tungsten alloy and containing a personal shielding device. Human forces are usually supplemented or supplanted by Robots. Robotic armored units, resembling the tanks of the early 21st century, are common in the battlefields, as are more mobile "HuverVs," hovering armored discs that have both installed autocannons and gunports for infantry inside to use. Spaceships have reached around 1 mile in average length, and are both well armed and protected, with Gauss Cannons and Lasers being common weapons, and shielding being standard across all spaceships.
Compared to the early 21st century, Domestic technology has progressed some, but not as much as the military. Televisions, the Home Computer, and the Internet have pretty much fused into one all-round system, and all of these are set up on a Quantum tunnel system, allowing instant information travel between the huge distances of the Solar system. The Washer and Drier have combined as well, allowing for one continuous process for clothes washing, one that can save time and water. Food has been miniaturized for those who will be in space for a while, or simply do not wish to eat, in the form of small patches that provide both vitamins, minerals, and calories to the body, through direct contact with the tongue.
