A Forlorn Venture (FT, CLOSED)

Postby United Systems of Vitoze » Tue May 27, 2014 2:23 am

Captain William Hawkes, USN
USV Venture CG-35, D-424 Star System, Unknown Territory

It was a quiet day aboard the United Systems Vessel Venture. They were two weeks out of Liberty Naval Station on an Exploratory Patrol, a relatively new type of deployment for the United Systems Navy as they now actively sought out contact with other civilizations following the passing of the Exploration Act by Congress. When the Navy had subsequently looked at potential platforms for carrying out that new tasking it had quickly become obvious that the Fleet Cruisers would be the most practical. Battleships and Carriers were too valuable to be used on such a mission, and their value would require a full escort even if they were used in that fashion, destroyers were simply not suited for that kind of work and frigates were too small and lacked the range required for exploratory missions. Thus the Fleet Cruisers, which were powerful and large enough to take care of themselves but numerous enough to operate independently (even whilst providing three vessels per Carrier Group to escort the Carriers that served as the Navy’s primary offensive expeditionary arm, but were ultimately not as valuable in the grand scheme of things as them or the Battleships that served as the Navy’s primary space superiority arm. As a result in the past few months over two dozen U.S. Fleet Cruisers had been deployed and a similar amount were preparing for an Exploratory Deployment.

Captain William Hawkes was a career naval officer, he had joined the United Systems Naval Academy at eighteen and entered the fleet four years later as an Ensign. Qualifying as a Space Warfare Officer in good time he had progressed respectably through the ranks, being one of the first of his Academy Class to qualify as a fully-fledged Tactical Action Officer, he had gone on to command a frigate and a destroyer before being promoted to Captain late the previous year. He had been offered a command of either a Battleship or a Fleet Cruiser due in part to his stellar performance in his previous commands (it was unusual to get command of a Battleship immediately on promotion to Captain). The prevailing opinion in the U.S. Navy was that the Battleship was the more prestigious command, but upon hearing of the Exploration Act finally making progress through Congress he had snapped up command of a Cruiser, believing (correctly) that there would be a whole lot more chance to distinguish himself on an Exploratory Mission than sitting on his ass aboard a Battleship in the Core.

Now Captain Hawkes sat in his at-sea cabin (which it was still called due to tradition) looking out the viewport at the pure bright light that characterized slipstream. The viewport was darkening the light somewhat, looking directly upon it was asking for one’s retina to be burnt out, and it was sat that staring at it for too long could cause a person to go mad. Captain Hawkes however found it relaxing. Although these Exploratory Patrols were exciting and full of potential, they were also a sizable logistics challenge and created a great deal of paperwork, all of which naturally came through him as Commanding Officer. But then it was just one of those things that came along with the prestige and privilege of command, besides at least once underway it tended to drop off somewhat. But command of a U.S. Warship was arguably one of the greatest honours a Vitozen could have, and the sheer amount of responsibility being vested in the Captains of these Fleet Cruisers constituted an immense professional compliment.

Hawkes glanced up as the 1MC, the primary shipwide communications circuit, buzzed into life with his presence being requested on the bridge. Finishing off the work that he had been doing and logging off of the system he stood up and headed out onto the bridge. As normal the bridge was a place of quiet work, there was nothing particularly exciting going on so there was no need for raised or urgent voices, just a routine slipstream transit. Given that they were not at any sort of combat alert all of his people were wearing much the same uniform as he was, specifically the Service Khaki, a uniform that had been worn by the United Systems Navy (and its ancestral predecessor) for a very long time, it didn’t offer any particular protection nor was it tremendously formal, but for normal duty it was more than sufficient. The Bridge Duty Officer surrendered the command chair and took his position a short distance away as he made his report.

“We’re coming up on the exist point for the next system, Sir,” the Duty Officer, reported.

“Alright, make the pipe,” Hawkes instructed and watched as the Duty Officer informed the crew via the 1MC that they would be emerging from slipstream. “Raise shields.”

It was standard procedure, for obvious reasons, to raise shields prior to emerging from slipstream. It was considered unlikely to be engaged immediately after emerging from slipstream, and would only really be brought about if the people on the other side were trigger-happy, but no one particularly wanted to run the risk of getting hit by a fusillade of fire with next to no warning with their shields down, they could be crippled in moments, even with their armour. Besides, raising shields was probably the one thing on the ship that didn’t actually require anyone to do anything except press a few buttons and for engineering to keep an eye on the shield generators, which were spread across the ship for contingency. It was a good idea in normal circumstances, but Hawkes got the impression that on Exploratory Patrols like this one it would be almost essential, as they would literally know nothing about what they were about to transition into, even if it wasn’t into the waiting arms of some trigger happy gunners it could easily be into something just as bad, or potentially worse, and the last thing that the Navy needed right now was to lose ships (not that it liked losing ships at any other time of course).

“Execute transit,” Hawkes ordered.

At it’s Captain’s order the sequence of events that would take the Cruiser back into normal space. Firstly the Slipstream Drive which propelled them sent out a pulse that created a tear in th fabric of the slipstream, beyond which the starscape of normal space could be seen, and out of which the Cruiser shot moments later. As soon as they were clear the Slipstream Drive shut down and the sub light drives took over once again, whilst behind them the tear righted itself and space returned to normal.

“Full ahead, all engines,” Hawkes ordered. “Commence sensor sweeps, log everything in the system and start a track on anything of interest.”

“Captain, we’re receiving a message from Fleet Command,” Lieutenant Jane Saunders, the Communications Officer reported. “It’s marked as priority one.”

Hawkes frowned. It was not unusual to receive messages immediately after returning to normal space, primarily because communications were impossible when a ship was in Slipstream, but it was unusual to receive a Priority One message, especially when one considered that such messages were uncommon at the best of times. Such communications indicated that there was a situation requiring any ship receiving to immediately respond, no matter what else they might be doing, it took priority. Whatever was happening it wasn’t good to say the least, and had just put a premature end to the Venture’s current exploratory patrol. Within moments Hawkes had brought up the message on his Command Chair’s display and his frown deepened as he read it. To say that what the message entailed was bad was an understatement to say the least, it was bad enough that if it didn’t come to a happy conclusion could derail the entire Exploratory Initiative, Act of Congress or not. He tapped a few commands into his display and opened up the 1MC.

“Attention Crew of the Venture, this is the Captain. A few moments ago this ship received word that another Cruiser, the USV Discovery has gone missing. By all accounts contact was lost nearly five days ago and it missed a rendezvous yesterday morning, and has now officially been declared suspiciously overdue,” Hawkes said grimly. “At this point there is no indication of what fate has befallen the Discovery, however the possibility that the ship has been destroyed by enemy action is very real and as such all Fleet Cruisers beyond the U.S. Frontier have been ordered to assume a state of alert immediately.”

Hawkes paused to let this sink in.

“In addition, all ships have been ordered to converge on the last known location of the Discovery, which is only a few lightyears away from our own location, so our orders are to complete our sweep of the system and ascertain if the Discovery is here, before joining other vessels in searching this sector for our missing ship,” Hawkes continued. “I am sure that I don’t need to tell any of you how bad a situation the Discovery might be in, but I hope that they will be able to take some comfort in the knowledge that we, their brothers and sisters in arms, are looking for them, as sure as we would if we were in their place.”

Hawkes paused again.

“I know that this is not something that we were expecting to have to deal with, but by god we will do our best to find them and bring them home,” Hawkes finished. “That is all.”

Hawkes sighed heavily as he sat back in his chair as he closed the 1MC. No doubt there would be a lot of speculation, a Fleet Cruiser might not be a capital ship, but it wasn’t exactly insignificant either If the Discovery had been destroyed by enemy forces then there was something big going on. It would after all be the first time that a Fearless-Class Fleet Cruiser would be lost in combat with an enemy force, and a stark reminder of their own mortality, given that they were sitting about a ship of the same class right now. Of course it was entirely possible, and was what everyone hoped, that the ship was just experiencing technical difficulties that had knocked out both its communications and its propulsion, or at the very least that it had been destroyed by some sort of natural phenomena, either way the men and women aboard Venture had the duty to find out, no matter how hard it might ultimately turn out to be. If there was one thing that Hawkes could count on it was his crew, he might only have been in command for a comparatively short time but they had already proven themselves repeatedly.

Even as his crew speculated about the immediate implications of what they had been told, Hawkes considered the bigger picture. When it came down to it the United Systems had not been in a full scale war in a very long time. Sure they kept in practice through border skirmishes and the on-going campaign against pirates and other criminal elements, but it wasn’t quite the same as a full-blown war. It ad been the long-standing policy of Presidents and Congresses alike to seek a primarily isolationist stance. The recent upsurge in piracy as well as the increasing number of alien visitors in the fringe had begun to change that, as the Exploratory Act had shown, but it would still take a while for everyone to get used to it. And god forbid if they actually found themselves embroiled in a war, it would almost certainly be a learning experience for everyone concerned, and would either make or break the doctrine and policies that the United Systems Armed Forces had been working under for a very long time. Of course in the long run that wouldn’t be a bad thing, it would just be painful that so many people would have to die for it to come about.

Hawkes glanced up as Lieutenant Commander Jason Crenshaw, the Venture’s Operations Officer, reported as he looked over his display which were being constantly updated.

“Sir, CIC Is reporting that we’ve got a contact on the sensors, its still too far out for then to estimate its size or strength but its definitely there and its definitely heading towards us” Crenshaw reported, as the Operations Officer he was responsible for building the picture around the ship primarily through the CIC. “It does not match any signatures or configurations in our database, so CIC is marking it as unknown contact Alpha One.”

Hawkes frowned and considered for a moment.

“Weaps,” Hawkes said presently, referring to Lieutenant Commander Steven Cooper, Venture’s Weapons Officer. “General Quarters, if you please.”

“Yes sir,” Cooper nodded, activating the 1MC and as the GQ alarm began to sound he made the fateful announcement that no one in the Navy enjoyed hearing. “This is not a drill, this is not a drill, General Quarters, General Quarters, all hands man your battle stations.”

General Quarters was not technically only for combat operations, it was often used if the ship was facing an environmental hazard or some other form of danger, but for the most part it was to get the crew to their battle stations. At General Quarters all of the ship’s weapons were manned and backed-up, damage control teams mustered and prepared to respond to any damage and the ship generally secured itself for combat, slamming down blast doors and emergency forcefields to ensure that even fi there was damage it wouldn’t gut the entire ship. It couldn’t be maintained forever of course, but whilst it was being maintained the ship was as ready sit would ever be to defend itself.

“Ship is secured for combat, Sir,” Lt. Commander Cooper reported a few minutes later. “All energy batteries and arrays are fully charged, missile cells and torpedo tubes are fully loaded and the shields are at full readiness.”

“Excellent, work up some firing solutions for that ship , we’re too close to where Discovery went missing for my liking,” Hawkes replied crisply. “Communications, send a message to Fringe Command informing them of our situation, get it off immediately.”

Hawkes leant back.

“Ops, keep an eye out for any other contacts, I don’t want to get caught blindsided,” Hawkes added. “Alright Comms, open hailing frequencies.”

Hawkes settled back into his chair. The visual hailing channel would be zoomed in on his upper half, standard procedure advocated not giving any more information about the bridge of a U.S. Warship to potential hostiles. It would show Hawkes, a handsome middle-aged man wearing various uniform accoutrements that told of a distinguished career. Aside of course from the pair of Captain’s Eagles on his collar he wore the Space Warfare Badge, which indicated his qualifications as well as a Command Pin, a laurelled star, as well as several rows of medal ribbons. He waited until the Communications Officer gave him the nod before speaking.

“Attention unknown ship, this is the United Systems Vessel Venture, identify yourselves and state your intentions.”

Unknown Star System
RCNS Varro
Captain Jared McKeon

The Royal Cresian Empire had yet to explore this part of space. The RCE was well known for its ability to contact other civilizations. It went out there and it looked, maybe not hard, but they were never isolationists.

Right now, RCNS Varro was the ship which was going to be making the contacting. Varro, at a solid 1,050 meters long, was one of the newest ships in the Royal Cresian Navy's arsenal. He was a living ship, with a personality just like any other living being without the biological parts to prove it. He could best be described as beautiful, the lines of his hull seeming to flow effortlessly together, certainly a feat of engineering.

And Varro had finally gained a Captain. Unlike most ships (which were not living,) you could not just assign a random person as Captain. They must be picked by the ship itself. The neural patterns of the brain decided it, as it helped the ship form a strong connection to its Captain so that he or she could be in complete control of the ship.

Captain Jared McKeon had been lucky enough to become the Captain of Varro. At 7' 10" Jared was about average for a Cresian male. His six wings on his back were pure white and his hair was blonde, with red/blue/purple streaks. His irises were an unnatural looking dark sea blue around four-pointed star shaped pupils. He had been a seasoned Captain before bonding to Varro and was more than a bit pleased to be commanding such a fine ship.

McKeon smiled slightly as he watched the gray boringness of nospace. At the moment he was floating in the command holosphere, the place on the bridge where the Captain controlled the ship. He was in command of this ship. It was amazing, this ship wasn't organic, it had no AI core, yet it, he, was still alive. He had a personality all his own, and had proven more than once that he was capable of being his own ship.

McKeon sighed, at the moment, his control of the ship was absolute. In the command holosphere , he saw everything as the ship did, in terms of sensors and visual. He was one with his ship, he controlled every movement. As it were they were in General Form, the catch-all form of the living ships which allowed someone to get where they were going without having the weapons formed or using all 8 engines. He looked over to the number which floated into vision, put there by his tactical officer. As it reached zero he flared his wings as though pulling out of a dive and suddenly the gray of nospace turned to black dotted with many, many stars as they emerged into a star star system which they were to survey and see if maybe there was something out here of interest.

As the sensors went about working McKeon flapped his wings and Varro began to move slowly forward into the star system.

Exciting work, isn't it Captain? Varro's voice echoed throough McKeon's head easily and the Captain smiled.

"Very exciting, better than babysitting your brother, or sitting in orbit though."

I have to agree with that one Captain. Varro replied, sounding happy.

Suddenly McKeon felt a flare of curiosity and then suddenly a bit of protectiveness and he turned his eyes as tactical highlighted in his vision what Varro had spotted.

Another, unknown ship. McKeon wondered why Varro was being protective, all it was just a First Contact, then suddenly his mind registered the energy readings coming off that ship. They must be ready to fight, however, First Contact protocol said that he wasn't to engage unless they fired first, and shifting to the ever aggressive looking Combat Form his ship boasted would escalate things to a level he would want.

Receiving a message from the other ship Captain. Varro said and McKeon watched as a 'screen' appeared in his visual range and played the message. So a human, man, decorated showing he'd had a good career so far in his life. He nodded. Well they didn't sound too threatening, though the active weapons did that quite nicely.

"Return channel."

The message which returned a few moments later was of an alien, yet they looked oddly humanoid. other than the eyes with those oddly shaped pupils, they looked practically like a human amn. Behind him were what were obviously wings with white feathers. He wore what was a uniform, black with golden seams. He did not have medal or medal ribbons on, but he did have a few golden stars on the left side of his tunic.

"United Systems Vessel Venture, this is Royal Cresian Naval Ship Varro. We came to this system on a simple mission of exploration and survey, we mean you no harm." The voice that alien male produced was downright musical, the words perfect English without any sort of translation matrix.

Captain William Hawkes, USN
USV Venture CG-35, D-424 Star System, Unknown Territory

Hawkes sighed heavily as he leant back in his chair and waited for the other ship to reply. He was watching the sensor reports carefully if he detected a buildup in energy readings he would have to assume that they were charging weapons, and at that point he would have to make a difficult decision.

“Sir, CIC is reporting that the ship is approximately one thousand meters in length, as such they are calling it a Cruiser at this point, although it is a full hundred and fifty meters shorter than we are, and appears much more streamlined,” Lt. Commander Crenshaw reported, Hawkes nodded his understanding U.S. Navy warships were generally quite bulky and stalwart in their appearance as a result of their generally thick armour and internals. “They’ve also confirmed that it matches nothing in our records or in the intelligence files, Alpha One is therefore confirmed to be an alien vessel from a civilization we have not encountered before.”

Hawkes nodded thoughtfully. This made the situation more uncertain, whilst he appreciated the information and he could make his plans more effectively now he would have much preferred for the vessel to have been encountered before, if nothing else it would have given him at least some information to go off, and wouldn’t require him to build a relationship with these people from scratch. Although the Venture and ship’s like her were out here to seek out contact like this, right now the primary thing in Hawkes’ mind was the USV Discovery, especially given that it had gone missing in this general area. The possibility that this ship itself was responsible for the missing Vitozen Warship was very real, and he was glad that his ship was ready to defend itself if the need arose. It was for situations like this that Hawkes was glad that the Navy had decided to use Fleet Cruisers for these missions, he wouldn’t like to be the skipper of a Frigate out here facing down an unknown, potentially hostile, cruiser without the firepower that the Venture had at her disposal. At the very least he’d be able to get his people safely out of harms way, there were more of them of course but he was in a much better position to get his larger crew to safety if the need arose.

However having to engage this ship in a fight, or even having to flee from it, was bad enough but it wasn’t actually the worst. The requirement for diplomatic discourse, which would have to happen if the ship was indeed friendly, was the last thing that Hawkes wanted to do. At this point he wanted to start the search for the Discovery as soon as possible, not engaging in a first contact and playing twenty questions with these people. He didn’t want to have to fight them, but he wondered if it would be the lesser of two evils. In the short term perhaps, it would let him get underway to find the missing Cruiser, but at the same time it would require him to kill however many people were over there, and probably lead to a war as well. The thought was dismissed almost as soon as it first appeared, but he figured that it just showed that he was human that it had even happened in the first place. In any event it wasn’t an option, not one that the Navy would ever have condoned, nor one that he would ever truly have considered, just the wanderings of a mind that had bigger concerns on its mind.

“Sir, receiving a message back,” The Communications officer reported.

“Alright then, I guess we find out whether we’re in for a fight,” Hawkes commented, then added dryly. “Although I suppose if they were going to attack they wouldn’t exactly give it away… let’s hear it.”

Hawkes listened to the message and groaned softly An Empire, that’s just what they needed. It was the stereotype perhaps but as far as he, and most Vitozens were concerned, Empire’s were bad news. History had proven that over and over again, a Monarchy wasn’t necessarily a bad thing if embraced democracy as well, but anything that called itself an Empire was treated with a degree of suspicion, as its very name screamed Imperialism at the point of a sword. The United Systems had come face to face with that reality in the last true war they had fought and that had both resulted in their isolationist stance and the lingering distrust of anything that felt the need to call itself by the moniker of Empire. It was a prejudice perhaps, but the people of Vitoze and its daughter worlds had good reason to embrace it.

Hawkes considered, there was still no evidence that this ship wasn’t responsible for the disappearance of the Discovery, and he wasn’t willing to take their word for it that they were on a peaceful mission. At the same time it wasn’t like he could go over there and ransack their computers, here in unclaimed space he had absolutely no jurisdiction or authority to do so. In U.S Territory he probably could have pulled it off, but out here, it simply wasn’t an option. Perhaps if he mentioned the situation it might cause them to react and give themselves away, and if not and they were indeed peaceful then another pair of eyes wouldn’t hurt.

Hawkes squared his shoulders and nodded to Communications who re-opened the channel.

“Varro, this is Venture-Actual, be advised that we are engaged in search and rescue operations for a U.S. Warship that has gone missing in this sector,” Hawkes informed them. “The missing ship, which is the same type of my own, went out of contact with my Command in the past few days and I will be departing once I have completed scans of this system to continue the search.”

RCNS Varro
Captain Jared McKeon

McKeon frowned. A ship missing? That wasn't good. This area of space wasn't well documented by the Royal Cresian Empire, but then again, it wasn't exactly a hop, skip and jump away. It had taken a few days to get here, even with the nospace drives which could achieve speeds greater than even their own designed ships.

They are probably distrustful of you. From their name, they are not an Empire or any of its related counterparts, probably what you call a republic. Varro commented and McKeon sighed. A republic, democracy or whatever moniker it was going by this week. The RCE tried their best not to hate them, after all the RCE was a Constitutional Military Monarchy, based off what was the British system of government back on Earth with the added benefit (in their eyes) of having a leader in the military who knew what to do when his/(but currently) her Empire was attacked. The distrust probably went both ways, as the RCE was founded by a person from what the history books had championed as the foremost leader in freedom, the USA. To say the least, the Earth which that founder fled was now nothing but a radioactive ball of dust, lost due to fighting by these so called ;democracies' and 'republics'.

But that wasn't his problem, well, it would be if he could secure a First Contact, for now he had convince that he could be helpful in this search for the lost ship, it would certainly give him brownie points in any later negotiations.

"Return channel Varro..."

"Venture-Actual, this is Captain Jared McKeon, we are sorry that your ship has been lost, the Royal Cresian Empire knows the pain of losing ships to unknown causes. My ship is very capable and we would like to assist you in your search, after a First Contact meeting if you wish, and we can provide astrogation logs for the past couple of weeks to prove we are not the one that cause your loss of contact in the first place." McKeon's voice answered to the message. He appeared a bit saddened, probably recalling a memory of a lost ship before his dark blue eyes turned back to Hawkes, awaiting a reply.

Hawkes inadvertently allowed his eyes to narrow at the response he received from the Varro. He couldn’t help but find it unusual that they would make the offer right off the bat to prove that they weren’t responsible for the disappearance of the Discovery, was it just a case of them being smart and realizing that their presence in the area might be suspicious, or were they indeed responsible and trying to disprove their own actions because they had falsified their records. Or was it just a case that Hawkes was being overly suspicious and a little paranoid? He supposed the fact that he was considering that option was a good sign, at the very least it showed to himself that he wasn’t allowing those suspicions to get the better of him. In any case, before he allowed them to tag along he was sure as hell going to try and find out more about them before he allowed that ship to get any closer to his own command, or any other U.S. Warship for that matter, than he had to, and certainly not allow them to search for a potentially badly damaged Vitozen ship, not without knowing a bit more anyway.

Ultimately however an additional ship taking part in the search would be incredibly useful. Regardless of whether it disappeared off to complete sweeps of nearby systems, not ideal unless he was a hundred per cent sure of their intentions, or operating alongside the Venture and speeding up the time it took to sweep an entire system so they could move on to another system quicker, their help would be extremely useful. There was after all a reason why there was generally a correlation between the number of ships or persons involved in a search and the likelihood of successfully locating the missing factor. Hawkes knew that he owed it to the men and women aboard the missing Discovery to do whatever he could to find them, and if that meant enlisting the support of an alien warship (as long as he was confident of their intentions) then that was something he would do. But his immediate priority was to ensure that he was indeed confident of their intentions, the last thing he wanted to do was give the Navy a second missing cruiser to have to find if he had fallen into a trap here.

All of which meant keeping the ball in his court.

He nodded to communications.

“Captain McKeon, Venture-Actual. Your offer of assistance in this matter is appreciated, as is your willingness to allay any fears we might have that you were in fact responsible for our missing ship,” Hawkes replied. “In order to facilitate this, I would invite you aboard the Venture to meet in person at your earliest possible convenience.”

"I'll be over in a few minutes." McKeon relied before shutting the channel.

i don't want you leaving Captain, what if it's a trap? Varro said, obviously uncomfortable with his Captains departure.

"I know, but I have to prove that I wasn't the one that disappeared their ship. You'll be fine."

McKeon could sense the disappointment from his ship but he had a meeting to get to. He exited the command holosphere and looked up at his operations officer.

"Jenny, get me the First Contact info along with a second chip of 2 weeks worth of astrogation logs..."

McKeon watched as his pinnace came into final approach to the other ship. It was time, he had only his uniform and chips with him and had come alone, in other words, putting a lot of faith in these people not to just kill him. The. Again, he was bonded to the warship he had just come from and he was a certain as space was dark that Varro would avenge his death.

It wasn't long before the pinnace had landed and he got up, brushing his black and good uniform, complete with medal ribbons and four golden rank wrist cuffs, and took off his white beret, tucking it neatly under his arm in respect for another ship captain.

Finally the hatch opened and he stepped out, to the humans he would be tall towering over most, his six white wings where obviously large, even folded upon his back. His uniform was formal enough for the occasion and his dark eyes quickly found the Captain. He gave a salute to the man and as his hand lowered from the salute he spoke. "Greetings Captain," he said, obliviously using the title because he had no idea of his actual rank and was assuming he was the one in charge of the ship. "I am, as introduced, Captain Jared McKeon."

Captain William Hawkes, USN
USV Venture CG-35, D-424 Star System, Unknown Territory

“XO, make the preparations,” Hawkes ordered his Executive Officer, Commander Stewart Bush, who was down in the Auxiliary as protocol demanded during General Quarters, after all if the bridge was destroyed someone had to take up the fight. “Full ceremonials, let’s make sure we do this properly.”

With that Hawkes handed command of the bridge over to one of the other officers and departed the bridge. If he was greeting the Captain of another warship he pretty much had to look as official and formal as possible. He wasn’t going to go overboard, and once this initial meeting was over Service Khaki would be broadly acceptable, but for this initial meeting he was effectively representing the United Systems of Vitoze as a whole, a privilege given to few, but one held by Naval Officers in command of a Starship. So he headed down to his Cabin and changed into his Service Dress Blacks, which consisted of a black double-breasted six-golden buttoned suit jacket worn over a white shirt, necktie, and black trousers warn with black shoes. Four golden rings on his sleeves identified his rank, a single star above them identified him as an unrestricted line officer, and his ribbons once again demonstrated his service credentials. Grabbing his combination cover, the visor of which had a line of ‘scrambled eggs’ as a result of his rank, he tucked it under his arm and headed out of his cabin.

Given that the Venture was a Fleet Cruiser she didn’t carry a great deal of support craft. Eight SU-600 Starhawk utility craft gave her some versatility and the ability to deploy small craft if needed, for missions such as such and rescue, scouting or even assault drops or some warfare tasks. As a result the flight deck wasn’t exactly large, just a single decently sized chamber with a modest deck crew maintaining the support craft it case they were needed. The deck was still a busy (and oftentimes dangerous) place but given that they were expecting visitors one of the visiting craft pads had been cleared and secured for the visiting ‘Cresians;. Formed up in the place of the normal side party of naval enlisted sailors was a group of four United Systems Marine in full dress, but if their uniform showed their professionalism the weapons they were carrying were fully armed and ready to fight.

Captain Hawkes looked up and down this honour guard with interest, he didn’t recognize the Marines, which wouldn’t do at all. So he thought hard for a moment and winced with discomfort as the two tiny implants that were on the surface of his eye activated, providing him with a HUD, upon which various information could be displayed, in this case it was linking with ID implants and positively identifying the four Marines down to their names and service numbers. The ocular implants were highly useful for easy access of information, especially in combat situations or when there was not easy access to a computer or datapad, but unlike most other implants used in the United Systems they tended to be uncomfortable when being used, and as such were only used when the situation demanded it. After getting the names and ranks of his four Marines he quirked his head again and his eyes returned to their normal, painless state. Hawkes liked to at least know the name of the people he was dealing with, all were enlisted so they were substantially lower in rank than he, but that didn’t mean he shouldn’t show them common courtesy by referring to them by name.

By now however the alien shuttle was on its final approach. Hawkes settled his cover onto his head and watched as the shuttle was guided in, grabbed by a tractor beam and positioned into place on the pad. The alien that stepped down was even more alien looking that it had when it had first appeared, but at the same time it was obviously humanoid and he supposed that had to be something. Hawkes was one of those who didn’t object to the idea of aliens, if he was he wouldn’t have been in this part of the Navy and he certainly wouldn’t have been in command of one of the Fleet Cruisers out on exploratory patrol. The Marine Guard snapped to attention and rendered crisp salutes as the alien Captain passed them and Hawkes returned the salute himself before offering his hand

“Captain William Hawkes, Commanding Officer of the Venture,” He introduced himself. “If you’ll come with me we’ll go somewhere a little less open to discuss the situation,”

With that Hawkes turned and led the alien Captain from the flight deck, the Marines following behind making it subtly clear that their purpose had not just been to look smart. After all they were all United Systems Marines. It was not a tremendously short walk, plus a short turbolift ride, to reach Hawkes’ cabin. His steward had already provided glasses full of iced water ready for the two Captains to make use of if they wanted to. The office section of his cabin was tastefully decorated, mostly telling of his past careers, including certificates and citations as well as models of his previous ships, various photographs and things of that nature. Hawkes settled behind his desk and gestured for Captain McKeon to sit opposite.

“Well, Captain, as I’m sure you can appreciate I’m eager to get on with looking for our missing ship,” Hawkes commented.

McKeon didn't look the least bit surprised that the Marines had followed, he was an alien on their ship, and it would be neglect of the Captain and them to just leave him alone with a new contact which could prove dangerous. He took interest in the cabin as he entered it, the room told of a colorful and full career and it was a nice cabin all things considered.

As he sat down across from Captain Hawkes and he spoke McKeon nodded gravely.

"I can certainly understand that Captain, and I'll try to keep it short." McKeon produced a data chip from seemingly out of nowhere and handed it to the US captain. "That is our astrogation logs over the last Cresian week, about two weeks by Earth clocks. The data is unencrypted and I'm sure you'll have no trouble reading them, though if you do, I can have my astrogation and com officer send you over a copy." he said, "However, before I can help you, I'm sure you'd like to know a bit more about me and my nation. I am from the Royal Cresian Empire, a 26 world Empire made up of four intelligent races. Humans are the most numerous, Cresians a close second, Namerians, a white skinned humanoid third and the Alaren, small-large cat-like creatures, about the size of an Earth Snow Leopard if I remember correctly come in fourth."

He paused for a moment, knowing that most outside humans did not like the idea of military in government, and that the Captain might react badly. He decided that he wouldn't bring it up unless asked, or at least until he handed over the First Contact information chip and they read about it. He took out said chip and handed it to the Captain as well. "This chip contains all the information your government will need to contact in the future as well as other official information you might find useful." McKeon ruffled his feathers slightly. "Now may I know a bit about your... United Systems was it?"

Hawkes took the data chip and placed it on his desk. As he wasn’t sure if it would interface directly he instead placed it beside his computer console and it activated a system that would scan the contents of the chip without having to actually interface directly. He had absolutely no idea how that worked, but it had been around for a fair amount of time. The information on the chip was briefly quarantined before it was confirmed to be clear of virus and the information displayed. As a fully-qualified Space Warfare Officer and Navigator he was easily able to quickly analyze the data and confirmed that when the Discovery had gone missing the ship sitting a relatively short distance away from his own command had been a long way away from here, and thus couldn’t have been responsible for this. That was something at least, of course when Captain McKeon had agreed to come over he had pretty much figured that they weren’t actually responsible for the attack, only a suicidal idiot would have come over after knowing that they had bumped into friends of the same people they had just blown up.

He took in the information about the Royal Cresian Empire with interest, knowing that the minority of people in the United Systems who weren’t fond of aliens weren’t going to be thrilled that the U.S. was getting involved with an Empire, and one that had four separate alien species in it, including one that wasn’t even humanoid! Hawkes wasn’t one of those people, nor were the vast majority of people in the United Systems, and even those that were anti-alien generally had a legitimate reason, mostly Freelancers who gotten into trouble with alien pirates and raiders in the past.

But right now he had a job to do.

“The United Systems of Vitoze has been around for about two hundred years, we’ve settled seven worlds and developed them substantially in an area of space we call the Core, in addition to several dozen other colonies of varying sizes in an area we call the Fringe,” Hawkes replied. “The USV currently only consists of humans, and all things considered is not something that is likely to change anytime soon.”

The bit that Hawkes missed out was that it hadn’t always been that way, but right now was not the time to bring that up.

“The United Systems is a Republican form of Government, with some degree of sovereignty retained by the various Systems that make up the United Systems, but with the Federal Government holding overall sovereignty and providing for the common Defence and things of that nature,” Hawkes added. “Anyway, the ship that is missing is the USV Discovery, she is a Fearless-Class Fleet Cruiser like the Venture, she went missing in a nearby system and all of our Cruisers in the area have been diverted to join the search in this sector.”

The Cresian Captain knew something had been held back, since he was telepathic and empathic, he knew the Captain wasn't telling him something, but given that the man did not currently know about the telepathy, something which he was going to have to remedy shortly if they were to work closely together, McKeon had no intention of pushing it.

"First off Captain Hawkes, there is something I need to tell you before we continue. The entire Cresian race, including myself, are telepathic and empathic. It is something which I want you to know as other nations have reacted... badly... in the past to the revelation. We would never read anyone's mind without their permission, there is more information about it on the chip if you want to learn about it." McKeon made a small motion at the second chip emblazoned with the RCE coat of arms.

Then he gave a tiny pause. "Well the loss of a ship this large is certainly unusual. The best I can think of are some pretty nasty pirates, though they would have to hellishly effective to take down a dedicated warship, especially if she was the same class as your own ship. I've never been in this area, neither has Varro. I could help scan system separately or I could stay by your side and help scan systems faster. Varro is top line hardware, his speed in either case will come in handy." It would be noticeable, though maybe chalked up to cultural differences, but McKeon referred to his ship by the male pronoun, while assigning Hawkes' sister ship the female pronoun. It was certainly an odd thing, but not something which could make or break anything.

Captain William Hawkes, USN
USV Venture CG-35, D-424 Star System, Unknown Territory

Hawkes didn’t look tremendously pleased to discover that the Cresians were telepathic, but he didn’t respond adversely or particularly surprised that such things were possible. This was for a very good reason, as there were some in the United Systems that had such abilities, not a great deal of them and many kept their abilities, and others like it, to themselves for reasons of simplicity. Never the less the United Systems Armed Forces had recognized the potential threat that telepaths could pose, and had developed an implant chip that was designed to block telepathy, and was one of a number of implants that was required to be inserted when an individual joined any branch of the Armed Forces, as well as standard for all United Systems Marshals, other Federal Agents and many police officers, for obvious reasons. The implants were normally kept inactive, as now, but they were always there and designed to activate automatically if invasive telepathy was detected, there was after all nothing that could be done about passive telepathy or empathy. Hawkes considered telling Captain McKeon about the device, but decided it would be a better test to see whether or not he was truthful about not going into his head, he would after all know the minute he tried.

“I’ve never known a Pirate vessel to be capable of taking down a Cruiser, so if the ship is missing due to hostile action then it is disturbing to say the least and downright frightening at worst,” Hawkes admitted. “Either we’ve got a single powerful pirate warship, a group of the bastards have come together to take down a Cruiser, or we’re looking at a more organized, and more powerful, potentially national military force, none of which is particularly good.”

Hawkes tapped a few commands into his console and a hologram appeared above the desk, showing a sphere of space centered roughly on the current location of the Venture herself.

“The Discovery’s last communication put her here, a system roughly a dozen lightyears away, we’ve got ships from all over heading in to help, none smaller than a Cruiser for obvious reasons,” Hawkes commented, pointing out green markers on the display that were the last reported locations of other ships in the Navy. “We’ve got the USV Enterprise Carrier Strike Group here at Liberty Naval Station, they’re mobilizing to serve as a strike force in case we need to hit something, but I doubt that Vice Admiral Warner is going to deploy one of only two Strike Groups in the Fringe with anything less than a specific target."

Hawkes leant back in his chair.

“That means that we have seven Fleet Cruisers spread across a hundred lightyear radius, needless to say that there is a lot of space in that area that we need to search, so we’re going to start where we know the Discovery was supposed to be, and work our way out from there, whilst other ships run their own search patterns,” Hawkes said. “For logistics and communications reasons I’m going to ask that your ship stay with mine and help us sweep systems faster, not to mention that if these pirates, or whatever they are, happen to be particularly aggressive I don’t think either of us want to be caught out there alone.”

McKeon was being truthful. Seeing as the entire race was telepathic, while for the most part laws were not in place, Cresians were raised in a society where it was wrong to just rummage through another person's thoughts. Cresians themselves could communicate telepathically and when they did, they knew how to keep their thoughts separate from others. Anyways, with the way Cresian telepathic links works, even the most Mind-Blind person (aka a person who isn't telepathic) would feel the connection form. As of this second, McKeon relied solely on the empathic part of skill, and didn't drag forth anything which the other Caaptain obviously didn't want to discuss.

"This sounds like a solid plan Captain." McKeon replied. "The attacker, pirate or not, would obviously be looking for a second kill, and while I usually put a lot more faith in my ship, considering he's a bit shorter than your own ship, I would not want to lose him. Two ships is more likely to give an enemy pause, especially if they are around the same size."

“I’m glad we are in agreement then, now we need to wait long enough for us to receive search plans from all the ship’s in the area and for them to receive ours and any cross-over to be rectified, there is no point in searching the same system twice,” Hawkes commented. “All U.S. Navy efforts are being coordinated by Fringe Command, any further assets they are able to send our way will be vectored in as they arrive, but for the immediate future it’s just what we’ve got, and realistically if this has a happy ending it will be within the next twenty-four hours or not at all.”

Hawkes leant back in his chair again and considered. He knew that the President, who had taken office only six months ago (and the Exploratory Act was his first major peace of legislation), would do everything that he could in a situation like this. The President was an academic by trade, he had not served in the military and was thus comparatively inexperienced in such matters, beyond his experience as the Governor (and this Commander-in-Chief) of the Trinity System Guard. No doubt the President would have wanted to send the entire Navy into search, his priority no doubt being to get his people home, but the Joint Chiefs of Staff would have reminded him why that was impossible, especially if the Discovery had fallen victim to enemy action. Hawkes didn’t mind that kind of inexperience, his heart was in the right place and that was the most important thing, it was one of the reasons why Hawkes, and billions like him, had voted for the man after all. Besides, as he had just said, if eight Cruisers couldn’t find one of their own in twenty-four hours, the chances were that it wouldn’t be found (in one piece or with a living crew anyway) at all. It was a depressing situation but everyone in the Navy knew the dangers of space, both natural and enemy.

“We should have that information in about an hour, Fleet Communications are usually pretty effective,” Hawkes commented. “Never the less, I expect we’ll be heading to the last known location, so we can make preparations based on that assumption.”

“No, it’s not,” Hawkes agreed. “But this time if we are lucky then maybe, just maybe, we’ll catch a break.”

Hawkes looked like he was about to say something else when he stopped in his tracks. In his head his telepathic inhibitor activated as it detected the telepathic intrusion into his brain, it may have been passive and solely giving information rather than taking it, but in order to get the to work at all the devices had to operate like that. The device then sent an impulse to his ocular implants and a warning message appeared on his eyes which he read and discarded quickly. To say that he was displeased was an understatement, there had been a certain degree of trust here, that had seemingly just been broken, even as they had been discussing how to search for a missing ship. He managed to keep his temper in check however.

“Captain, what I didn’t mention earlier when you mentioned your telepathy was that all U.S. Military personnel, including myself, have an anti-telepathy implant in their brains,” Hawkes commented as evenly as he could manage. “Would you therefore tell me why, I presume you, have just caused it to activate?”

McKeon managed to keep a frown off his face as felt something change in the other Captain. He couldn't really feel the directions of emotions of his thoughts anymore and he guessed it was sort of blocking mechanism. He could still feel other crew memebers of Hawkes' ship so it wasn't a ship-wide device.

He wasn't going to ask, after all if Hawkes decided that he didn't want him messing around in his head (even though he wouldn't) that was his right. However as Hawks spoke, with a tone that implied he wasn't all that happy, he frowned.

"Captain, if there is one thing I would never do is try to read someone's thoughts without their permission, especially while aboard a First Contact's ship." McKeon tried his best not to sound offended, a tiny hint of it slipped into his voice anyways. "I do not..."

Actually Captain. It was me. Varro said, cutting off McKeon mid-sentence, to Hawkes, currently ignorant of the ships ability, this would seem quite odd. I spoke to both you and Hawkes, and I felt the implant activate after I spoke.

"Well try not scare First Contacts like that again." McKeon replied (seemingly to no one as Hawke would observe.) The Cresian shook his head for a moment before turning back to Hawkes. "I am sorry Captain if what happened has shaken any trust, but it was not me that activated your implant. It was..." He paused for a moment. "My ship, Varro, which activated it. He is alive and can 'speak' into people's minds as a way to communicate. I'm sure it sounds quite ridiculous that a 1,050 meter long warship made of alloy and wires could be alive, but if you deactivate your implant, Varro can prove it himself."

Hawkes looked skeptical, to say the least, but he was at least willing to take the chance. Any relationship was built on trust and it had to start somewhere, on a purely intellectual level it would have made no point for the Cresians to specifically derail the entire first contact so soon after agreeing to help search for the Discovery, so he figured it was worth the risk. Concentrating hard on deactivating the implant the device received and understood the impulses that his brain was sending to it and the device deactivated and stood-down it’s detection systems although they would still warn him of any and all intrusions and it could be brought back online fairly quickly. But as he said trust was what was needed, and despite what had just happened (and that he wasn’t a telepath) he got the impression that he could indeed trust Captain McKeon so he was willing to take the risk. If it all went badly wrong then at least he had four Marines standing outside the door ready to help him if the need arose, although the morbid concern that they would barge in too late wasn’t too far away from the front of Hawkes’ mind as he deactivated the implant.

“Alright, it’s deactivated,” Hawkes said simply.

Captain Hawkes? I am sorry that if I caused you any distress. Varro's voice spoke clearly into Hawkes mind. It wasn't forceful and it came across almost as if a person was actually speaking to him. “Hello Varro,” Hawkes spoke out loud, not knowing what else to do and never the less still feeling a little silly whilst doing so. “I appreciate that, I just hope that we find the Discovery safe and sound at the end of all this.”

Hawkes blinked as the holographic situation display on his desk updated itself. Where there had once been just the markers of the other ships the map was now complete with course projections and it became clear that in the next few days the eight ships would pretty comprehensively search this entire sector of space, if the Discovery was still there she would be found, the question that raised itself was whether it would be soon enough, and what condition the ship would be in.

“Well, there we have it,” Hawkes commented. “Captain, I suggest you return to your ship, I wish to get underway as soon as possible.”

About an hour later the Venture emerged from slipstream in the neighboring system.

“Transition complete, all systems reporting as green and the ship is rigged for sublight speeds,” Commander Bush reported as he looked down at his status display. “The Varro is one thousand meters off our port quarter and reporting green light as well.”

Hawkes nodded grimly.

“Alright, let’s get this search underway, we’ll take the inner system, please ask the Varro to handle the outer system,” He instructed. “The sooner we’ve swept this system the sooner we can move onto the next one.”

McKeon nodded as the coordinates for the star system were transmitted over and astrogation entered them. He flapped his wings within the command holosphere and Varro respondedbuy moving.

He flipped over, ripping a hole into nospace and disappeared from the system.

An hour later, technically, Varro had already arrived at the star system. But he hadn't exited nospace, he was just monitoring the system in general with a special probe that could transmit data between realspace and nospace. He was being polite, McKeon waiting for Hawkes to arrive before exiting nospace directly beside the US vessel.

We're to scan the outer system Captain. Varro said.

"Alrightly then." McKeon began to maneuver the ship around the outer system, a pace which was quite slow for him given his usual speed, but he was here for search and rescue, not showing off. They carefully picked their way around the outer system, hoping to find the lost US ship

Captain William Hawkes, USN
USV Venture CG-35, D-422 Star System, Unknown Territory

Hawkes sat quietly on the bridge of his ship. There was technically no reason why a Captain couldn’t sit on his bridge twenty-four hours a day, aside from the need for sleep of course, but it generally wasn’t done for two reasons; firstly it precluded other officers (especially junior officers) from getting valuable watch-standing experience, secondly (and perhaps more importantly) it tended to have a negative impact on crew morale. This latter wasn’t so much because the crew disliked their Captain, but few people wanted to make a mistake in front of their CO and having them looking over their shoulder rarely helped in that regard. Never the less, Hawkes had no intention of leaving the bridge whilst they were actively engaged in a search as he wanted to know immediately if they found anything, so he remained quietly sitting in his command chair allowing the OOD to carry out his duties and doing paperwork on a dataslate and a stylus. It was the best compromise, as Hawkes felt that even his at-sea cabin was too far away if something happened, and if there had been an attack on the Discovery it was possible, if not likely, that the hostile ship might be waiting for first-responders to arrive to attack them as well.

“OOD, Sensors, got a contact at bearing one-three-four mark two-one—nine, distance twenty five hundred kilometers,” One of the enlisted spacers reported. “It’s small, only just picked it up because it was so small.”

Hawkes leant forward as the OOD glanced back at him, he nodded subtly.

“Good spot sensors, based on the profile I’d say it’s probably a log buoy,” The OOD replied. “Helm, alter course to intercept, stand-by on the tractor beams and the recovery crew.”

The Venture altered course hard to starboard and bore down on the contact in question. Sure enough when they pulled alongside it was a standard-issue U.S. Navy Log Buoy, carried by all U.S. Warships and designed to be deployed if there was a risk of the ship being destroyed or badly damaged. The contents were heavily encrypted and the buoy itself was designed to be difficult to detect by anything expect a Vitozen warship. It was promptly grabbed by the ship’s tractor beams and brought into the ship’s flight deck and secured by the flight deck crew.

Once it was connected into the ship’s systems it took only a few minutes to access it.

“Sir, I’ve got the highlights from the log,” Commander Bush reported. “The Discovery was indeed attacked, by two Cruiser-grade starships, approximately thirty-six hours ago, she was able to destroy one of them but was badly damaged.”

“What happened to her?” Hawkes asked.

“When she deployed the log buoy she was planning to leave the system and hide somewhere from that other cruiser,” Bush replied. “By the lack of evidence of her destruction I think we can assume that she managed to escape.”

“That is something at least,” Hawkes nodded. “Why can’t we see evidence of the destruction of the first hostile ship.”

“Now that we are looking for it we can see heightened levels of radiation, consistent with a ship being destroyed but not with our own fusion reactors,” Bush replied. “The other hostile ship must have salvaged all of the remains before they pursued.”

“Interesting, I wonder what they wanted to keep a secret?” Hawkes frowned. “Anyway, did we get any good scans of their ships.”

“Yes sir,” Bush nodded. “The Intelligence boys are running it through the system now.”

Sure enough moments later an intelligence officer arrived on the bridge.

“Sir, we’ve just completed our assessment of the hostile vessels, and we got a match,” The Officer in question informed him. “Although they are obviously very different, they do have similar energy signatures to Vokan Warships.”

“Good God,” Hawkes gasped, feeling the same surprise and shock from everyone else around him. “Communicate this information to Fringe Command, start working on finding out what Discovery might have gone off to, and inform the Cresians what we found.”

Josiah Bennet, President of the Unified Systems of Vitoze
The Presidential Mansion, Vitoze, The Core

The gathered Joint Chiefs of Staff and the rest of the National Security Council stood up sharply as the two U.S. Marines opened the door into the Situation Room and President Bennet strode in. They could all still see the unease at which the President took in this show of respect for his position as Commander-in-Chief, well aware that he had not served a day in uniform and was inexperienced on military matters to say the least. Never the less he knew how to deal with people so he simply considered them as that and settled into the seat at the head of the table.

He had been kept up to date on the progress of the search throughout the day but this was the first time they had requested his presence, even if his Chief of Staff had been coming down for briefings every hour. So he assumed that something big was happening He had been informed of the Contact with the Royal Cresian Empire of course, but right now he was confident in the Captain of the Venture’s ability to handle the matter, the formal diplomacy could (and would) be handled at the Governmental level once this current situation was brought to its conclusion, whatever it happened to be. But if this was more urgent and direct that even contact with another civilization then President Bennet could only assume that they had found some trace of the Discovery, and it was unlikely to be good.

“Mister President, a short time ago the USV Venture discovered the Log Buoy of the USV Discovery in the last system that the missing ship was known to have been in,” Fleet Admiral John Warner, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, informed him, behind him a star map showed the location in question. “According to the logs the ship was attacked and badly damaged by two Cruisers, she was able to destroy one of them and escaped from the second to places unknown.”

FADM Warner looked uncomfortable.

“Sir, the vessels that attacked the Discovery had a startling similarity to Vokan Warships,” Warner said grimly. “We’ve not confirmed this yet as the second enemy ship destroyed the wreckage of the first, but I’ve seen the sensor records.”

“My god,” Bennet said quietly. “I think we all hoped this day would never come.”

“Yes sir,” FADM Warner replied. “However by all accounts it has, and we need to take precautions.”

“What do you suggest?” Bennet asked.

“We forward deploy the Enterprise and her Battle Group to join and reinforce the search, keeping the other Carrier on alert to respond to any incursions into the Fringe,” FADM Warner answered. “We then place the entirety of the rest of Fringe Command onto alert, as well as the Core Fleet and raise the readiness level across all branches of the Armed Forces.”

“Is there any evidence that there is going to be further attacks?” Bennet asked. “We’re talking about waking up millions of men and women.”

“Yes sir, and I hope to god we do it for nothing,” FADM Warner replied with heartfelt sincerity. “But we need to be ready.”

“Very well,” Bennet sighed heavily. “We’ll go to DEFCON 3… and God help us all.”

Unknown Star System
RCNS Varro
Captain Jared McKeon

The search seemed to be taking forever. Looking for a lost ship which wasn't their own was hard but they were looking anyways and had been provided all the correct data needed to look for the other ship. He and Varro has noticed the sudden course change of the other ship and didn't take the RCN ship long to see the tiny contact the ship was looking at. He didn't stop looking of course in case there was something out here, but soon he was pulled up short when a symbol floated into his vision which told him that Captain Hawkes wanted to talk to him. He twisted his ship around a came close to the Venture again.

He could feel Varro's unease. He could feel the emotions on the other ship's crew and while most of them seemed pretty calm and steady there were pockets of fear and hate and he knew that whatever they had found must of been bad. He was glad he had drawn himself back in close to the other ship as while his ship was fast it took only a single, well placed surprise attack to end just about every ship's life, and Varro was no exception.

Once the information had been relayed to him he requested a private channel to Hawkes. He waited patiently for the other Captain to get on the line and then he spoke. "Captain I am pleased that your ship was not in fact destroyed outright and lived to see another day... but this enemy of which you speak, the Vokan, what are they? I sense much shock and fear from those that know so I understand that it is a enemy you do not wish to ever encounter again, but I, and the RCE, do not know of them."

Captain William Hawkes, USN
USV Venture CG-35, D-422 Star System, Unknown Territory

Captain Hawkes sighed heavily as he read the response that he had received from Fringe Command, giving an absent-minded nod of appreciation to his Yeoman as she handed him a mug of strong coffee. It seemed that Fringe Command, and no doubt the National Command Authority itself, was taking the situation as serious as he had expected. But they had to, if the Vokan were making a reappearance… it didn’t even bare thinking about. In any case he would feel a whole hell of a lot better when that Carrier Group arrived to reinforce his position. In the back of his mind he wondered if this would change everything, the military budget had been in decline for some years now as no threat had presented itself in over a century, to the extent that they were down to a mere eight Fleet Carriers, which compared to the fleet at its height maybe eight years ago was small. He hated to think that the men and women aboard the USV Discovery had paid with their lives to restore the United Systems Navy to its former glory.

Hawkes found his mind going back to history class at college, the attack on the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor during Earth’s Second World War. He knew that if this was the Vokan then they, like the Japanese at Pearl Harbor, had just awoken a sleeping giant if the United System’s substantial industrial capacity was turned towards building up the military.

“We’re being hailed by the Varro, Sir,” the Chief Communications Specialist on duty reported from his station. “Captain McKeon for you, Sir.”

Hawkes nodded and he listened carefully to what McKeon had to say before nodding for a return channel and sighing heavily again.

“And I hope you never do, Captain, the Vokan are an old enemy of ours who led to a very dark period in our history, an enemy that we hoped we’d never have to see again,” Hawkes said grimly. “The Fleet Carrier Enterprise has been dispatched to our position and will arrive in approximately four hours, if this is the Vokan then the United Systems Navy needs to find out about it.”
