At the behest of Prime Minister Jack Layston, we are please to cast our vote of AYE. Since the legalization of chemical weapons for defensive purposes, and this assembly's refusal to pass legislation restricting the usage of nuclear weapons against unarmed civilian populations, a total ban on landmines seems a tad hypocritical.

It shall be the the new goal of The Federation to begin the process of drafting new legislation heavily restricting the usage of landmines, while still permitting their usage for defensive purposes. We would greatly value the assistance of The Dark Star Republic in that endeavor.....

Warmest regards,

Landmines for defense, pray tell how that is supposed to work without the risk of killing civilians.
And thanks to so many votes for this my defense spending is up from 0 :) 1.6%. :( It could take ages for my cut military issues to wipe that out.

Critically, by expecting if you have the military units available, deployed and operating to deploy a strategic defensive minefield, you have the full capability to evacuate your own citizens from the impending battlefield.

OOC: I could quite frankly, give two shits about your stat wanking. If you don't like resolutions changing your stats, then resign....

...why the fuck would civilians knowingly want to wander into a clearly marked minefield in the first place?

Texas Department of WA Affairs

On behalf of the Bestest Region in NationStates, Texas, we congratulate The Dark Star Republic on their roughly 9,876th legislative achievement in the General Assembly with the passage of this necessary repeal. We are pleased to inform this body that our Regional Delegate, NewTexas, cast his 36 votes FOR the repeal, based on publicly expressed opinions. We are equally pleased that your lovely Secretary-General, under the terms of this repeal, is now able to further secure the secret entrances to her evil underground lair with vast landmine fields - which probably explains why she was too busy to attend this debate. Do pass our warmest regards along to her.

that would be the same for any animal that wanders into a minefield?

Ignoring the fact that most animals aren't as heavy as humans and probably wouldn't trigger even antipersonnel mines [OOC: penguins thrive at Falklands because of this], if a few deer or elk end up dead within the minefield, why's that a problem at all?

well, they could be biohazards and no one would want to clean it up?

...a few dead wild animals are a biohazard in a no-go-zone? Sounds good. More reasons for people to not go there.

Animals die of natural causes and decompose literally all the time. Why does being struck by metal and plastic fragments propelled by chemical-energy explosion somehow make them "biohazardous" to the point of needing a landmine ban?

The circle of life continues unabated.

It makes no difference compared to an elk that had died of starvation, disease, physical injury, been crushed by a tree, exposure, drowned or killed by a predator.
