Most Hazardous/Dangerous Profession in your nation?

Postby Tiesabre » Wed Mar 26, 2014 6:51 pm

There are a great many different type of jobs and professions one can have in this great big universe of our's but when it come down to it some or much more hazardous than others. Nation to nation those professions can vary widely depending on a great many factors.

So when it comes to your nation: What is the most dangerous/Hazardous Profession one can take up in your country? What's the mortality rate? What is the average lifespan of one in the profession? What exactly makes it so dangerous?

The most dangerous Profession within Tiesabre is a Ministry of the Environment Ranger. These Rangers are tasked with ensuring the protection of Tiesabre's national forests, parks, rivers, lakes along with the control of flora and fauna. Control of the flora and fauna because of the very restrictive environmental restrictions the nation has many predatory animals and plants have to be culled or driven away to ensure the general population isn't threatened as countless Ties are killed by wild plants and animals every year.

Because their job entails going into some of the most isolated and out of the way areas of the nation many have been known to simply disappear and are never heard from again. Another large percentage of them are consumed by the various predatory animals and plants that exist within our nation, another large percentage are killed by simple accidents out in the wilds (i.e. quicksand, falling into cracks within glaciers, exposure). The mortality rate is a shocking 37% per year. Most Rangers are grievously injured in their first year and the average lifespan of a Ranger is 4 years. However due do the pay, high prestige the job has within the general population and the fact a Ranger can retire in 10 years there is never any shortage of Rangers.

Those convicted of murder, sexual crimes, animal cruelty, child abuse, cyberbullying, bullying, dangerous driving w/ or w/o drugs/alcohol and occasioning in death, domestic abuse, foetal abduction, grievous bodily harm, kidnapping, poaching and stalking because those punishments are the MOST severe, and they are going to get caught because the police here are EXTREMELY all-pervasive...

Even with all that safety, it's still not that safe being a stunt performer...

Being a deep sea giant crab and giant octolobster catcher. The octolobster is quite devious and is known to catch and eat octolobster catchers. The same can be said of the giant blue camouflage crab. The pay is excellent, deep sea giant crab and giant octolobsters are delicacies. It is of course not a mandatory profession.

Our nation has strong and well-funded police, intelligence, and defense. While we may appear to be a military junta, and all of our citizens are soldiers from birth, the Supreme Army of the Dirt Roads has largely become ceremonial - our country holds elections and runs democratically depending on state/territory, and there have been few international conflicts since the Revolution of Y2K.

There are no "dangerous" professions so long as businesses do what they are told (organized crime is common, though the Supreme Army constantly condemns such activity and ensures the law is enforced).

Soldiers of the elite legions are the first thing that comes to mind. Since the elite legions spearhead the assaults on the galaxy's most brutal battlefields, casualties are invariably very high and life expectancy very short.

The average lifespan of an elite legion trooper tends to be 30.3 seconds from the moment of leaving the mothership during the first wave of a planetary assault, although orbital bombardment that softens the world's aerospace defenses can increase that time to around 60 seconds. After touchdown in a high-intensity combat zone, that lifespan drops to just 7.9 seconds from leaving the dropship. Armored forces fare a bit better, with an average lifespan of 32.5 seconds from leaving the dropship, since their vehicles can obviously take more punishment than infantry. Aerospace fighter pilots tend to last an average of 25.7 seconds from contact.

An elite legion can routinely lose as much as 60% of it's manpower, and oftentimes even more, during a spearhead assault on an unmolested enemy world. These losses are rather easily replaced, however, since distinguished warriors from ordinary legions who crave the honour of wearing the black armor of the elites are never lacking.

Outside of battle conditions, the average lifespan of an elite legionnaire is six to eight months from enlistment. These brief months, however, are ones full of glory and honor, the fallen being guaranteed enshrinement in the Halls of Eternal Glory, and the survivors being looked upon as gods of war incarnate by the civilians. An elite legionnaire is guaranteed free drinks and the undivided attention of the ladies wherever he appears in recognition for his selfless service to the Imperium. Those who survive long enough to rise through the ranks can make a fine military or political career (or for that matter, practically any other career they might pick after retiring from service), and, provided they live long enough, invariably pick up combat experience that would put even the most seasoned human veterans to shame.

---

Deep space explorers and first-wave colonists on worlds with hostile environment are also at the top of hazardous profession list, but their risks are nowhere near those that the elite legions face.

A soldier's profession is usually the most dangerous of all professions.

However, given that we prefer peace to war, and that we tend to use auxillia instead of our regular troops, you might live through an entire career without ever seeing live fire. :meh:

It's a different story, though, if you're living in the 7th c. B.C. and you're a Kerma or a Huggema -- these two states consistently fight each other. If you're a gentleman from any one of the remaining 121 states, you'd be amazed how the two never get tired of fighting each other.

The Military or Security professions are obviously dangerous.

Working in one of our nuclear fusion facilities can be dangerous for obvious reasons, though they're very safe.

Being a member of the government-privately shared and operated Remnant National News can be dangerous due to coverage of stories in warzones or disaster areas.

Probably being an Environmental Control Warden. Basically, we send these guys out to deal with predatory animals and mutants. Kinda like the OP's profession, but, as far as I know, that wildlife isn't mutated all to hell. Feral dogs the size of a Volkswagen. Orks who can rip apart an individual in power armor with ease. Giant Tarantula Hawks. The meanest mutated lizards known to man.

The pay is pretty good, and ECWs are given some of the best benefits around, but that still doesn't change the 46% mortality rate.

Any career involving dealing with Essence addicts, really. Essence is a widely used, highly illegal party drug popular among the lower classes and is infamous for its extremely addictive and hallucinogenic properties.

Essence has become such a widespread problem that cases of medical teams, police and rehabilitation centre workers being overpowered, mauled, killed and even cannibalised has become an almost daily event.

Do slaves count? They never stop being slaves so I suppose they have a mortality rate of a hundred percent. They live on average to only be able twenty nine, only taking account those that live to be past five years old.

What is the most dangerous/Hazardous Profession one can take up in your country?
Being a miner or involved with the logging industry.

What's the mortality rate?
Between 20 and 40%.

What is the average lifespan of one in the profession?
Varies.

What exactly makes it so dangerous?
Mining was and still is somewhat dangerous due to the lack of enforcement when it comes to safety regulations at official mines run by registered companies. There are often no safety regulations with regards to mining in unofficial or illegal mines and depending on the minerals, cave ins are common. Often, mining communities that revolve around these illegal mines have issues unto themselves. Many of them are hotbeds of crime or are built in areas where the land is not stable, due to the mining itself or thanks to the wholesale clear felling of trees to build houses. The Nambija disaster of 1993 was one such incident in which a landslide buried half of an illegal mining town, killing 300 people.

Logging is also a dangerous profession and it too is not regulated. There are few, if any safety regulations and many workers are killed by work related accidents. Unusually, perhaps uniquely, there is also the danger posed by logging in the Amazon posed by animals such as the jaguar, cayman etc. as well as disease and the remoteness of many operations. A large number of illegal camps operate on tribal land and run ins with tribesmen are common. Many of these run ins usually result in deaths or injuries and bodies of loggers have been found with all manner of mutilations or impaled with arrows and spears.

Phosphate and silver mining operations, though highly lucrative can be extremely dangerous. Mining accidents are the leading kind of workplace death in Hosenaso. Phosphate workers are easily sickened from diseases carried, festering in the phosphate or injured from the phosphate and limestone pinnacles at the mine. Silver miners have to descend deep into dark shafts to do daunting tasks. In fact, mining accidents are not only the most common kind of workplace death but the third most common death in general.
