Please add to this post. What's your opinion? Under what circumstances would such a unification occur? Things like that, because two sentences to start usually gets the thread locked immediately.

Someone just played Sunset Invasion.

Why would the Incas and the Mayans ever unite? They were separated my hundreds of miles and on opposite oceans.

No; the reason they all fell was smallpox, and the Spanish were way better at the whole "war" thing (see how they managed to kidnap the emperor of the Aztec without killing anyone?)

Don't forget the terrain, and was there ever a Mayan Empire?

Pretty much if any of the Incans, Aztecs and Mayans had a strong centralized and unified empire, they wouldn't have been conquered as they had been.

They still would have been conquered, but not in the way they had.

Not as such, no. The Mayans' geo-political situation would be best compared to the city states of ancient Greece.

Nope. disease sweeps through, kills hundreds of thousands. Spain comes in and picks up the husks. Unless they suddenly develop resistance to said European diseases. I heard we got a guy already on that for the Inca. :p

It also doesn't help when surrounding tribes gladly aided the Spanish (the Tlaxcalans) to get back at the Aztecs for that whole "invade and carve out our people's hearts" thing.

Imagine the Spaniards surprise, they are there to conquer and the small tribes all want to help take down the biggest thing standing in the invaders way.

Possibly. The way they were conquered was by rather small bands of Spanish troops, with not exactly full support of the Spanish government. There are many factors that could prevent Spain from sending the required amount to actually conquer a unified Empire.

The Mayan civilization had collapsed by the time the Spaniards reached the Americas.

Now, the Aztec and Inca empires were around during the Spanish era but I do not think they would have united before that. The Sepa Inca would want to be at the top. While the Aztec Emperor would also want to be at the top. There would have been a power struggle.

In Central America, around 200 tribes, many hostile toward each other, united under the Lenca native chief Lempira. They managed to hold back the Spaniards. However, when the Spaniards manage to get rid of Lempira, the 30.00o native strong so called army quickly fell apart without his leadership.

This is that story -

Whatever the OP is suggesting, the answer is no. Firstly, both "empires" were happily either expanding territory or fighting one another, or in the case of the Incas, splitting the empire in two and then fighting amongst themselves after that.

Plus there's the whole distance and geography involved.

The Western part of Guatemala tends to be much more higher populated with Mayans. This western part once separated from Guatemala. It was called the nation of Los Altos. They had separated from Guatemala in January 1838. It joined the Federal Republic of Central America in June of 1838. Around 1839, the Federal Republic broke up. By January 1840, the then President of Guatemala invaded and got rid of Los Altos government officials. Yes, they placed the government leadership before a firing squad. Then they were united once again with Guatemala.

Well the Incas were quite a strong centralized and unified empire, with a powerful and well-organised military and administration.
Problem, tech level was way lower than the conquerors'.

Weapons and armour they didn't even know how to use or maintain or repair. Weapons mean nothing without the proper logistics and doctrine.

No, there were bigger problems than that, such as

1. A smallpox epidemic which had reached the Andes from Mexico had just killed 50% of the population (a measles epidemic would come a few years later to pick off 2/3 of the survivors)
2. The emperor and much of the royal family died due to it, resulting in civil war over succession to the throne
3. The empire's centralized system had largely broken down and people were starving since all the farmers were dead/sick from disease

The impact of Spanish technology was pretty minimal in the first campaigns. What helped them out was having lots and lots of native allies.

The scenario presented in the OP is impossible. There was no 'Maya Empire,' nor was there ever one as far as I know.

The Inca were the best hope the New World had against the Spanish, but they were too disorganized and in the midst of a civil war when the Spaniards showed up. If they had come a few years earlier or a few later, things would have gone rather differently. The Inca military was a very well organized and efficient one, and while they probably would have suffered significant casualties taking on the Spanish, they wouldn't have lost.
