Are you proud of your country and/or loyal?

Postby Haafingar and Hjaalmarch » Thu Jan 23, 2014 2:17 pm

Honest question. Do you feel a sense of loyalty or pride to your country of birth?

You see, I'm an American. I voted twice for Obama hoping for real change and so far nothing. Now, understand that I still feel Obama was the better of two evils; however, everyday more and more I begin to see Obama is nothing more than a less extreme version of a Republican. Now personally, I'm not loyal and hold nothing but contempt for the United States of America. Why should I be proud of my country? We're one of the most advanced and prosperous nations on earth except that our people struggle on a day to day basis to keep a roof over their heads, pay their bills, and more and more Americans find themselves working jobs that pay so lousy that the government is required to subsidize worker's income. We get sick and go to the hospital and return home having to file for bankruptcy. Great nation, right?

I see my parents for example. They love the USA. Who wouldn't if they got the opportunities they had? My father worked for the Dept. of Sanitation and Dept. of Transportation in New York in his early twenties before quitting because "he didn't like it". He then stumbled into landing a job in the US Postal Service. My mother and father both met while working at the postal service. They're both retired now from USPS collecting pensions that pay more than double what a regular worker makes working his ass off for 30-40 hours a week. Do not misunderstand my tone. Workers should be able to retire and live comfortably. I blame the government for not giving enough protections so that workers can form unions to demand from their employers the benefits that my parents received because of their union.

We're talking about two young adults who, to get the job they got today you'd have to sell your soul, had fantastic pay, excellent benefits, a pension, the whole nine yards. Me? I don't have that same opportunity. Neither do others my age. I mean, we're so god damned bitter that the generation before us had the world and we have nothing but misery in our future.

Personally, I'd light a cigar and watch this nation crash and burn and cease to exist and not a single fuck would be given. I'm so envious of Europeans and their governments who actually seem to care about their population. You guys hit the lottery and probably either do or do not know it.

I have no strong positive feelings towards my birthplace, the country in which I grew up, or the country in which I reside.

Basically this.

I have positive feelings towards my friends and family, not my country. I have no reason to.

Yes. In the same sort of way as people support football teams - I'm aware that it's not objectively better than all others, but I identify with it.

In 1969 when I was graduated from college I received a draft notice.

After discussion with my fiance, I resolved to refuse to serve, and instead to go to jail. I had friends who had already made their way to Canada when faced with the draft, but I wanted to honor and respect our laws at the same time I was disobeying them.

So, I was not and am not particularly proud of the USA, but I hope I am (according to my lights) loyal to it.

Grass is always greener on the other side. You may have noticed that many European countries have severe economic problems, high unemployment and a surge of separatist/populist movements these days.

I'm not proud, nor am I ashamed of my country.

I love my country. I love its nature and its people (jackasses though many of them may be) and its history and its language(s). Simply because, well, you grow attached to things that are literally physically near to you. Eventually.

That is not to say that I love my country to the exclusion of all else. I am an internationalist and a cosmopolitan way, way before I am a patriot.

I think everyone, no matter where they live, should be patriotic of their country. Some governments may be horrible, but a country is more than just a government.

This, however, I disagree with strongly, au contraire to probably most of my country's inhabitants.

I don't think people are obliged to love their country. It's a matter of choice and of your own personal emotions.

Mind telling us which country that is? I have my guesses, but none that I've got much faith in, and I pay little attention to the politics of european nations. Prefer my own two continents, personally.

Anyways, I'm not one of those #2edgy4u kiddies who wear Che Guevara T - shirts made by child laborers and post on facebook about how the poor exploited Hamas terrorists are having their bullets and rockets blocked by big mean Israeli civilians, so yes, I am proud of my nation and loyal to its creed.

I don't live there anymore but i love and am proud of my country. It's a shame that the people are progressively getting worser and stupider and the government is bad, but governments are bad everywhere. I suppose it is still better then the emperor of the USA. If i would be given the chance to, i would train and serve in the military for most causes.
This country does not represent my ideologies.
