Discussion on Libertarianism

Postby Moralem Populi » Tue Jul 16, 2013 10:16 pm

Basically, let's start a dialogue here. Explain your views on the ideology of Libertarianism.

In case you live in another country that has a different definition, we are going by the right-wing American version of the ideology.

If you don't know what it means in the United States, here's a link:
http://www.lp.org/issues

I used to be a very strong supporter of Libertarianism. Eventually, however, I studied the way mixed economies worked in other developed nations. I explored the concepts of universal healthcare, and how public education worked in other countries. I also noted how certain regulations on the economy proved beneficial, and protected the workers. Although it took 9 months of consideration (yes, I take a long time when it comes to thinking of these types of things), I left the ideology.

Now, I am a heavy supporter of worker's rights, a mixed economy with some things run in the private market and others socialized, universal healthcare, and fair trade. Things change over a long period of time. But I can't help but feel that certain parts of the ideology still attract me.

So what are your thoughts?

And thus we have my opinion summed up beautifully in one sentence.

But seriously, libertarianism is basically the result of people being too idealistic economically. The market will not regulate itself perfectly 100% of the time, and the market is not guaranteed to take care of all the workers. Thus we have government regulation.

Libertarianism supports the free market with no regulation. If history has shown us anything, it's that letting the free market roam without regulating monopolies and worker safety basically leads to workers taking it in the butt repeatedly. With no lube.

So what are your thoughts?

I'm definitely a fiscal conservative, but only slightly socially liberal...so therefore only slightly libertarian XD

Libertarianism is when cool, edgy rebels decide they don't like paying taxes. Then they proceed to their taxpayer funded middle school where they get into an accident so they get rushed on taxpayer funded roads to a taxpayer funded ER where they are treated by taxpayer funded nurses. Then they return to protesting taxes.

Oh, ok. I thought you meant a dictatorial technocracy when only technical experts have power.

Nonetheless I still don't understand how democratic technocracies can be a thing.

Bingo on the idealism. But the same could be said of other utopian ideologies. Free Market Capitalism, Communism, and other systems assume perfect human nature. That's why I support a market economy with strong regulations and certain socialized services.
