Are you proud to be a citizen of your country?

Postby Euronion » Sat May 11, 2013 5:33 pm

I'm an American and I'm extremely proud to be an American. I love my country and plan on serving in the Armed Forces after College. Though I took APUSH this year and I am surprised to hear many people say that after taking the class, that they are no longer proud to be an American. I disagree vehemently and explained why I am still proud to be an American, more so even, after learning our much more about our history. This got me wondering if there were any others who felt the same way as I did or as my classmates did so I did a quick Google search and found that several people simply think that you shouldn't be proud to be anything because it is just like racism in the sense that you can't change where you were born just like you can't change what skin color you were born with (unless you're Michael Jackson). It got me wondering how many of you on NS feel proud to be a citizen of your nation, what nation is it? why are you proud? or why aren't you proud? I added in a poll that included a separate answer for Americans because I'm curious to see how Americans feel about their country compared to how non-Americans feel about their country.

Sort of. I like being a New Zealander, mainly because everyone likes New Zealand for some strange reason but I do wish our country was run better. And that the general public was a shining example of our apparently good education system rather than a show of general ignorance towards most issues.

Edit: And I also wish we had a better football team.

It was granted by being born here by parents who were born here and there is no threat of it being taken away, so in that sense of pride, no. In the sense of pride that I enjoy the position and am happy with my association with it...well, I like my state a lot but outside of that I could live anywhere, lots of different places have their charm.

I like that even though as often as not our solutions suck, we have a system that doesn't assume perfection but rather assumes that governance evolves with time and has built in a system that allows us to address and change the way we approach things. That has its problems, but we get a chance to address those as well. But honestly, just about every developed nation in the world operates that way these days so...you know...nothing special I guess, even if we go on about it making us special all the time.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

American. Most of the time meh, but I'm not proud that we are home to people like Michele Bachmann and Todd Akin.

Also, patriotism is an outdated concept in an increasingly global society.

I support peace in Israel and Palestine. The governments and people in power on all sides are an absolute disgrace, and their unwillingness to pursue peace is a disservice to the people they are meant to be serving. The status quo is not simply untenable; it is unquestionably unacceptable.

Not really. I didn't exactly earn it(I believe my mother did most of the hard work), it's not like there's much of a movement to try and make me ashamed of it, nor does it hold me back in life.

I'm proud to be Scottish & European. :)
Scottish not British.

for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

I'm Belgian and I'm proud to be a citizen of my country. We're a weird little enigma, but still managed to distinguish ourselves.

Sure, my country does some stupid shit sometimes, but overall I think they're managing. They're doing their best, which all we can ask.
