Obama: Success or Failure?(As of now)

Postby Gladia » Sun Nov 27, 2011 9:25 pm

I think that Obama was actually a really good President. Firstly, I approve of the way he handled Libya. He was able to help NATO and the rebels overthrow Gaddafi without any major military involvement, and without any major financial cost. Secondly, Osama bin Laden was killed under his administration. While some people might disagree that Obama played a major role in the operation, I feel that he did. He had to approve of the operation happening in the first place, and without his judgement, the raid would of never happened. Dick Cheney, who used to be Secretary of Defense, agrees with this. Thirdly, he guided the economy well. His stimulus package saved millions of jobs throughout the country, and economist agree that his jobs plan would of made many more. Fourthly, he expanded civil rights by having ''Don't ask, don't tell'' repealed under his administration.

So, was Obama a success, a failure, or something in the middle?

Meh. Not much in the way of alternatives is there, what with a two-party dictatorship system.

"Never be deceived that the rich will permit you to vote away their wealth." - Lucy Parsons
Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy. "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, citizen ownership of equity, or any combination of these. There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them. They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate, the degree to which they rely on markets or planning, how management is to be organised within productive institutions, and the role of the state in constructing socialism.

Few if any of the answers will be rational assessments compared to one line answers and/or a list of highly selective acts that confirm the poster's preconceived bias.

Ultimately, he's better than any alternative so far proposed.

I don't think a two party system is really a dictatorship. Sure, they are able to keep all the other parties from getting mainstream attention, but if they're democratically elected, then they aren't a dictatorship.

Also, seeing how much they fight, it's anything but the will of one person.

I wasn't being pedantic, it was my honest opinion that I couldn't say for certain yet... As of now? I think hes a failure. Our relationship with Pakistan and Russia has repeatedly taken hits under his administration (most recently with regards to 24 Pakistani military being killed by an airstrike). The stimulus bill that was passed for a cost of 825 billion dollars only saved(or created) between 700,000 and 3.3 million jobs at it's peak effectiveness, well short of the promised 5.5 million.

DADT being thrown out was a good thing, but the Bin Laden raid was a mixed success, I don't see why someone in Pakistan(the Prime Minister for example) couldn't have been told what we planned to do and it resulted in the possible leaking of military technology to the Chinese.

Talk to Congress. They control the economy a lot more than he does.

Personally, I have a very negative opinion of Barack Obama, I feel as if he's either stabbed me in the back, or half-assed nearly everything I wanted him to do when I voted for him. From ending the tax cuts, to providing universal healthcare, to ending the wars, to cutting the defense budget, to ending the discrimination of marriage, etc. And it started even during his campaign, when he promised to take public funding and immediately upon getting the nomination decided he couldn't do that and took corporate/bank money. He's even managed to crack down on medical marijuana for literally no reason whatsoever other than to make sure he has a complete set of betrayals to everyone who ever supported the Progressive wing of the party. I guess he just couldn't bear someone still thinking he was "okay", heh.

However, whether that is a measure of "success" or "failure" depends on his and your definitions of failure. I subscribe to the notion that he had no intention of doing any of those things, and was merely trying to garner my vote, and therefore, from his point of view, he's likely been very successful. He's helped his friends in the Banking Industry, his friends in the Insurance Industry, the Pentagon, the Drug War barons, etc. From his point of view, it's a resounding success, imo.

And I hate him that much more for it.

I don't mean to only address certain parts of what you wrote, but our relationship with Russia isn't Obama's fault. Our relationship with them only started to degrade when Bush took office, and now Obama has to clean up the mess he caused with them. Perhaps you can criticize him for not fixing it, but you can't criticize him for starting it.

As for Pakistan, they've also done things to hurt our relationship as well. Giving them samples of our stealth helicopters comes to mind.

Clearly an act of retaliation for so blatantly violating their sovereignty.

No, it wasn't. Not for anyone who expected to get it anyway. The Mandate requires you to buy it from a private company, nothing is being provided. They're only providing for their bastard friends in the Insurance Industry(an industry that should be dead or dying if Obama had done what he was supposed to do) a perpetual stream of customers.

In effect, what they succeeded in was a bailout for the insurance industry. At the cost of everyone not currently having insurance, most of whom don't because they can't afford it. I'm really hoping it's struck down by the court, our family can't afford another expense.

Well, they would of likely warned Bin Laden about the attack if we had told them, seeing as it's so blatantly obvious they were working together. Would you say that the results of violating Pakistani sovereignty justified it?

In Russia, I think being anti-american is a political thing, so there's really not much we can do to help our relationship with them. I don't recall us doing anything really major to Russia expect for the missile shield, but that's been an issue before Obama.

Our relationship with Pakistan was going to falter anyway. Having an army anywhere tends to strain diplomatic relations.

As for Russia, we should stop interfering with their government. How can you say that a nations government is not good when a great chunk of the population of that nation loves the government.

America has had much failure with foreign policy. If you can't make friends then stop annoying everyone. No need to make them enemies.

Saying that Russia has a good government because the majority of people approve of it is a fallacious appeal to popularity.
