The Dagnian military, even in those times of war when it does exist, is mostly non hierarchical, at least as far as militaries go. There are "directors" and "coordinators" for particular missions, but there is nothing resembling the ranks of the old militaries.

Ranks of the royal guard (since the Imperial Nicksyllvaninan army and the Hungarian royal guard have their own ranks)

From Upper left to lower right:

guardsman: a standard foot solider, nine in each squad,
lance corporal: no man under his command but work as a replacement if the corporal is killed and serves as the corporals right hand, two in each squad.
corporal: leads a minor squad of ten men.
squire: leads a superior squad into battle.
Knight: leads a superior squad into battle and is the replacement for the squire lieutenant if he falls in battle, and serves as his right hand brings the commands of him to the squires.

squire lieutenant: leads a platoon of 100 men into battle.
lieutenant: leads a platoon of 100 men into battle and is the right hand of the knight lieutenant whom is in charge of the regiment and is to replace him if he dies in battle until high command can find a replacement
Knight lieutenant: is the commander of a regiment of 1000 men
squire commander: command 10 regiments, one squire commander is chosen by the commander to serve as his replacement if he is killed in action and to serve as his right hand.
commander: a commander is the commander of an entire army
marshal: a marshal have the command of 10 armies and is chosen as the overall commander of an army in a theatre of operation if more than one army is present during the campaign
High marshal: the King himself under whom the entire royal guard serve

Same essentially goes for the navy, with blue uniforms and gold markings as the norm. The respectant air-services add a white bordure around the tab. The insignia are to be affixed onto the collar-tab in base uniform-color (for example green for standard camouflage uniform, khaki for desert-camo and so on) in the form of red pins in the shape of triangle, square, diamond and star. They are to be abbreviated when adressing, for instance a captain being a 3rd Segundo would only be adressed as Segundo, a 3-star general (a 2nd Primero) as Primero.
The Tercero - Segundo - Primero system is applied to all branches of the military, the term Soldado being replaced by Navalo in the navy.

Military ranks of the Independent Army of Serenity Valley

• Captain: currently the highest rank, held by Captain Malcolm Reynolds, Supreme commander of Serenity Valley. If the need arises for a bigger command structure, he will promote himself to Colonel.
• Lieutenant: held only by Captain Reynold's second-in-command Zoë Alleyne.
• Sub-Lieutenant: symbolically held by the IASV's only pilot, Hoban Washburne, though he is not a trained soldier.
• Master Sergeant: a symbolic rank, held by the most experienced Sergeant in the IASV. Currently held by Monty Montgomery.
• Sergeant: currently two other Sergeants are enlisted in the IASV. They command a Squad of 10 to 15 Privates each.
• Corporal: just barely higher than a Private, there are usually 1 or 2 Corporals in every squad. They can on occasion command an Assault Group, an informal, temporary splitting of the Squad, if the need arises.
• Private: your basic lowly soldiers, currently some 50 Privates in the IASV, split between 3 Squads.
