I suggest something a bit more descriptive might have been easier to take seriously.

Instead of "The Earth will asplode unless you give me money!", perhaps you should have gone with "The Earth's core is rapidly expanding. If drastic measures aren't taken soon, the Earth will be rendered inhospitable and all life on Earth may cease to exist!"

We could all have put a realistic amount of money into researching our way to a none asplode-y death. Or it might have gone like this anyways. *shrug*
