Prime Minister Sang Jun-Lee debating same sex unions in the National Assembly.

Yoksi: MP Ni Dan-Chon has drafted a bill that, if passed, would allow for civil unions in Sangju. The bill, widely expected to fail, has garnered a degree of controversy in Sangju.

The ruling party in the government coalition, the Heritage Alliance, has claimed that they will stand against the bill, along with the Renaissance Party, New Sun Party, and New Democrats. However, the left wing Social Labour Party has voiced support for the bill.

"Same sex unions, while not quite same sex marriages, do threaten the heritage and traditions of our proud and family oriented Sangju. If this bill passes, Sangju will have been bit by the toxic bite of cultural relativism and progressivism. With that said, it becomes clear that we cannot let this bill pass. The government, and the people of Sangju, will certainly stand against it," said PM Sang Jun-Lee

While a "no vote" is largely expected, public opinion on the topic of same sex unions, and LGBT rights as a whole, has shifted dramatically in the last decade. In 2005, 24% of the population claimed to be "okay with same sex unions", while 15% of the population was supportive of "same sex marriage." Now, the numbers stand at 44% and 37%, respectively. The millenial generation, representing the 18-29 age group, voices large support for same sex marriage, with 65% of millenials claiming to support same sex marriage, compared to only 7% of those over the age of 65.

The author of the bill, Ni Dan-Chon, claimed that the Prime Minister was using phony threats to divert national discussion from the economy to same sex unions.

"In the winter quarter, our economy shrunk by 0.5%. That's horrendous, atrocious even. Inflation stands at -0.7%, and our economy is just limping along. But, of course, the smiling Jun-Lee would love to teach us his folksy 'wisdom' over gays, as opposed to the economy," Dan-Chon said.

Despite a stagnant economy, Jun-Lee, who was elected in 2004, has a personal approval rating of 65%. The bill may very well increase his steady popularity.
