Well it doesn't actually do anything, and it lacks a category and strength. So we are opposed, since we dislike excess legislation.

OOC: Heh, how did you think I was online? :P

Internet, from some of its earliest days, was an educational tool. The internet is the most practical way of sharing digital information in an academic setting.

I don't think anyone's contested that. This whole discussion has gotten way off course. No-one's saying that Internet isn't a great way to communicate, whether it's cat videos or scientific essays or selfies, but that it is not necessary for a civilized society to function.

Heck, you may be a FTL space dweller future tech level nation and thus beyond what we now call Internet, or you may be a 1940's or something like that past tech nation for whom telegraphs and old-fashioned wall-attached phones are the most cutting edge tech in fast connections. Neither RP is inherently wrong.

And, again, I'm giving you the advice to avoid getting into these kinds of bickering fights with that account, if your intention is to make it look like a helpful newbie-friendly thing rather than yet another veteran descending into dictionary wars and arguing over whether USA Law X applies to the whole IC multiverse or not. People can search your posts, you know.

OOC:
While I am not a Denizen of an FTL-Capable Interstellar Civilization, I play one on the Internet, and I feel the need to be extra pedantic and mention that being beyond 'Internet', isn't really viable, barring some kind of Psionic/Psychic method, which fits better in Fantasy rather than Sci-Fi anyhow.* This is partially because of the sheer utility of the Internet in some form, and you'll probably see in most Science Fiction, especially more mainstream ones, such as Startrek, the existence of some central archive that serves more or less the same function, albeit in a somewhat different manner.

Just as an example, the Imperium, which, admittedly, is something of a haphazard clusterfuck of Insufficiently Advanced Technology based on stolen Sufficiently Advanced Technology, has the Imperial Archive, which I believe I've mentioned before, to which all Planetary Networks** connect to, if in a roundabout sort of way, given that Hyperpulse Generators are called that for a reason.

The idea of the Internet, or substantially similar structures, is just too practical to get left behind. Granted, at least some portion of the reason you don't have much exploring anything beyond it, is because we haven't developed anything more advanced to throw at Science Fiction, but that only holds so much water, especially seeing as how Science Fiction has been moving more towards the realistic side of the scale in recent years.

*And if you want to be extremely pedantic, the method of transmission doesn't matter in the slightest, and it's still and Internet of sorts.
**Which are themselves, more or less the same as the Internet of Today.

Good thing, then, that I tend to quote the ones I object to. :P

But fair enough in your objection to Jarish's comment of Internet not having any educational value - I probably missed that cause as I barely skimmed the RL law fight the two of you had. But arguing that you have to have Internet to have a good educational system is bollocks. (Not saying you necessarily ever argued that, but just stating that here.)

Look, just because you don't like me doesn't mean you should automatically assume I'm some evil forumgoer who likes to strawman people. Believe it or not, I was actually arguing with Jarish for a reason: Jarish did claim that the internet had no value in an educational setting, something I contested and I'm sure you would too, if you weren't so busy trying to find ways to make me be the one in the wrong.

I never stated that the internet had no value in an educational setting. I stated that it was of great educational value. After all, one can still do research and get an education without it.

Reached Quorum!

Postby Llorens » Sun Jul 03, 2016 6:14 am

Look who just got the Internet Act to quorum! I sent a telegram to EVERY SINGLE WA DELEGATE on this (about 1,750 delegates, meaning over 250 individual telegrams), and got the magic number with 2 hours to go. Thanks for all people who have put in suggestions, and thanks for any support from delegate voters. I guess it is really up to the people now! I would hope that any of you reading this would vote for it because the Act's supporters and I have put strong, evident facts out defending each part of this Act. The Internet is a key foot forward in striving for further growth and modernisation of our NationStates community.

This is change for the better! Vote FOR The Internet Act!

Actually, you haven't. You haven't even demonstrated why this isn't illegal. This does not affect democratic freedoms, it does not strengthen society, and it does not encourage economic growth.
The Internet is a key foot forward in striving for further growth and modernisation of our NationStates community.

You'll have to explain that to societies getting along perfectly well without the Internet.
This is change for the better! Vote FOR The Internet Act!

This is hardly change at all. Your campaign intentionally deceives delegates into approving something that does not do what you say it does, and you have reduced this proposal to such a skeleton of suggestions and mild encouragements that I don't see how it can do anything other than say "Internet good".

"This is a perfect example of the World Assembly overreaching itself once again. This Act intends to involve the WA in the internal domestic affairs of the member state to an unacceptable extent. It is of the fundamental freedom of a state to decide upon its political form and how it should be administered, and this Act will hinder and discriminate against many governmental forms, including our own. Our government will campaign earnestly against the passage of this most offensive proposal, no doubt lauded by the internationalists and ultra-democrats."

OOC: Seriously, this is ridiculous. I understand the thrill in writing a resolution etc. etc., but this is inappropriate for an international organisation such as the WA. The WA has been overreaching itself recently and this must end. Indeed, even without me dealing with any issues my Civil Rights measure has shifted 17 points in the last few months, solely due to WA legislation. End this madness!

The latter.

Just kidding.

Many nations in NS are PMT, and don't even have Internet. That is my problem with this. If they don't have it, and are hundreds of years away from being able to do so then that needs to be stated in the proposal. Also, category is incorrect. Oh, and just think how much this would cost governments. Where is all of this money going to come from?

Seems like the mods have taken it out of the queue. Reconsider your proposal's category, OP, and perhaps allow it to stay in drafting for a reasonable amount of time.
