Resolution Keyword Index

Postby Biosphere 1 » Wed Mar 04, 2015 4:35 pm

OOC: Once upon a time, a nation walks into the WA GA to participate, "Hmm, 300 resolutions and counting...I'd rather read a book than 300 resolutions."

There's already the two Passed Resolution threads for reference and search. However, my very brief experience here led me to a simple conclusion; I need a bibliography. An alphabetical list of subject keywords and accompanying links to the appropriate resolutions would streamline the very tedious path from newb to author, I hope.

It is my intention to make an index of keywords in order to sort the resolutions into a web of interconnecting subjects, such as crime and human rights. Sounds insane, but I can't help myself. I will probably give up half way, but whatever.

If anyone has any ideas for keywords and/or applicable resolutions, please post below.

All the GA resolutions, sorted by category.
In=character, Kaboomlandia is a World Assembly member and abides by its resolutions. If this nation isn't in the WA, it's for practical reasons.

I've been pushing for a grab of the WA resolutions DB so it is freely available and easily searched. Computer filing is much faster than human filing.

If you go to Passed Resolutions and type your keyword into the Search box at the top left of the thread, you get a (computerised) search. You can also do the same with the Historical Resolutions thread. Is that the same as what you're asking for?

Biosphere 1, I think people are posting links to help you, not to diss your idea. The fact that Resolutions are already sorted one way doesn't preclude your sorting them another way. Sorting by broad topic, rather than type, could be helpful. You could make a fair beginning by using the Search function as suggested above.

You might check NS Wiki to make sure there's nothing like it already.

Your primary assumption, that there is such a thing as a "WA Resolutions DB", is in error. While this game does (now) use a database for certain elements, WA resolutions are not stored in a database. Our amateur game designer and faithful host, Max Barry, created his own convoluted WA master file out of kite string, sealing wax, and some old burlap sacks his wife tossed in the dustbin. If anyone ever tried to created a searchable index, the speed of such an index would melt all the sealing wax and cause the server to seize up. We did manage to empty the burlap sacks one fine April day in 2008, but they're now stacked behind some incomplete Bush Ranger kits in Max's garage, and we can't get to them anymore.

So sorry.

You mean to say that it is basically one massive file in markdown or xml? That would be fine too. Honestly, I just want the file, I can write the code for its interpretation (as long as it is not in some proprietary format).

Either that, or you mean to say that it is in a proprietary format and can only be read/deciphered with the required equipment.

Oh, would that it were!

Remember, this was 2002, and the amateur author/coder who put it together probably wasn't even aware of nascent movements like markdown (2004) or XML (1998). Granted, he's a much better coder these days after 12 years of repairing his initial mistakes (with [violet]'s help, of course), but I doubt the WA files even exist separately from things like the twice-daily update and the WA endorsement counters. As I understand it, we'd pretty much have to rebuild the game from scratch to separate it out.

This game is written in PHP, correct? PHP coding, in itself, will place things in different files. If the WA files exist with the twice-daily update and endorsement counters, what does the page load when you hit the list of General Assembly resolutions? The 'startat' thing at the top seems to me to imply that the WA files are differentiated from the rest.

Could you query [violet] on this? I feel more openness on this front would be helpful towards expanding the game.
