Postby Swartaz » Tue Feb 22, 2011 6:57 am

Welcome to the first in hopefully a long line of the Göteborg Invitational Rugby Union tournament.

Roleplay: There will be an oppourtunity to earn up to 3 RP points per matchday. These RP points will not degrade to favour consistently good RP'ers. Points will be given out for originality, effort, spelling and grammar, attractiveness to the reader, and repect for other players.

'Napisannyh dlya bolelʹshchikov, na Poklonnikov.'

by Tomas Tscheterschow

Following a Rugby World Cup that was a relatively poor performance by the Mytanar National team - is the Goteborg Invitational. The knockout rounds of the tournament are being held in Swartaz - and the group stages feature two groups of three teams who play each team in their group twice. Once home and once away. This is hoped to be a tournament that the team can more than compete in, as some of the teams in the tournament are very close to us in the Rugby Union World Rankings. Which is pretty surprising seen as our team crashed out at the Quarter Final stage, even though they were on their home ground throughout the tournament, playing in front of their own fans all the way through the Cup, apart from the Group Stage games that were away from home. Our ranking is 8, which is a huge burst onto the scene for our squad. The highest ranking team in the tournament are the RWC16 finalists, Kulverint and their rank of 3.

Once again, the coach - Ryan Turner, has named an extremely young team. The oldest player in the team, is 28 year-old Openside Flanker, Metody Sajak. Team Captain is Enes Gunnarsson, aged 23. The second row is a dynamic forward, who is tall and possesses a wiry strength. The subsitutes are the same ones that were named in the World Cup, apart from two - and all of these are 17 and under, although this isn't entirely Turner's fault as the MRB have decided to make this a rule that only Juniors are allowed to be part of the Substitutes Bench.

The young age of the team has been debated by many, as both having good points and bad points. We will now look at these. In the pro-camp, is Paul Thompson, manager of Racing Cassia '78.

"Well, if you look at the players that are now coming out of the academies around the nation - a lot of them, are of an extremely high quality. The current scrum-half, Piotr Chevin is a member of my own side - he came out of the Cassia Academy and he is one of the best rugby players in our nation. If he is taken out of the team just because he is young - it would mean the quality of our scrum-half would decrease hugely. The good thing with youth is as they play together, a togetherness is generated that cannot be made by patching a few players of various ages together. A team is made when the players grow-up together, these players will know each other throughout their careers and will grow both as men and as players. These men will become best mates, and this creates an attitude where these players would near enough die for each other." Paul told us.

The 'against' camp is a lot bigger, and one of the biggest fans of an older squad is Mytacom correspondent, Pete Sutcliffe.

"Experience will out, these players when young, don't know the game. They don't know the game, they don't know when to dig in and put the extra amount of effort in. The older a player is, the more they know about the game. A bunch of experienced players together know when to win a game, the know when to defend a lead or when to go for a win or whatever. Younger players can grow into their peak and then become part of the national team. These young players may crack under the pressure of the bigger games, whereas the older player will be able to keep a cool head under the pressure of the international stage and be able to play to the best of his ability. I think these new coaches who are coming in and playing with young players are getting their ideas all wrong, they should change."

The young Rugby team, is certainly a new-age idea, as the coaches who have more recently began managing their teams are the ones who seem to be employing the tactic. Will it work? Well, we'll have to wait and see - a good performance in this tournament can only help the case-in-hand. The expectations are high though, and the semi-finals have to be reached - at the least.

Wilhelmus Farransza in Kulverint starting line up for the Göteborg Invitational
Surprise return only 7 weeks after returning from horrific facial injuries

The lineup for the Kulverintian rugby squad in the Göteborg invitational cup was announced last night, with the surprise inclusion of team captain and star player Wilhelmus Farransza on the wing as usual, despite only having played for weeks since a horrific injury to his face forced him out for 2 months. He still bears horrible scars all down the right side of his face, showing where Tommi Ulakarviks' studs went in to his face. Coach Tommi Junkuarlaski has stated thus:

"I've been talking to Wilhelmus about it, and he says he's fine. His beard and moustache are fine, although the right hand side of his face still bears the scars. Still, he says he'll be OK, I say he'll be OK, and his recent performances for KNVB suggest he's fine, too."

But what of Jeroen Berdoas? The kicker lost his son during the final stages of the world cup, and since the final Jeroen has not started for KNVB.

"He says, again, that he's fine and wants to do it. It's not as if he hasn't been playing, it's just been that he's not starting. Jeroen's only really useful for kicking, which isn't good in a normal club, but for your country, when you've Dominica, Farransza & Kouralavska scoring that regularly, we can afford to have a fly half who's only kicking."

The tournament itself is a complex format. Kulverint are the top ranked team in the tournament, and will so hope to do well, but to do this we should come top of our group, which means beating Mytannion, ranked 8th, and a rival for some of the Zwartanian players, Loonaterian, who should be easy prey, ranked 12th. After this, we will probably play Saugeais in the semi finals, though if Swartaz have a bad game to them we could face them. After this will be the final, in which we should play, and hopefully beat, either Swartaz or Mytannion, RWC hosts from the previous tournament.

For those of you who have yet to hear, this is Kulverint's roster for the Göteborg Invitational trophy:

Coach: Tommi Junkuarlaski

Swartaz Today
Sport

The Swartazian rugby union team, after a dissapointing world cup, had their first training session earlier today in preparation for the inagural Göteborg invitational.

The tournament was devised after several rugby playing nations displayed frustration at the fact that their team played only one competitive tournament every 4 years. In response, the SRF (Swartazian Rugby Federation) set up this competition. The system is two groups of 3, with the teams playing each other twice, follwed by the top two teams from each group going into the semi final then final. At first, Kulverint, Mytannion and Saugeais were invited due to having expressed intrest in a tournament of this type previously. The hunt was then on for two extra teams to make it 6. Loonatarien were the first to reply, and the 22nd ranked team were accepted as the 5th entrant. Cotdelapoms were originally earmarked to be one of the teams, but their rugby board did not respond to the formal invite, and so their place were granted to rugby new boys Urumgard, who are currently unranked, and will be making their international debut when they face us in MD2.

Onto Swartaz's chances in the tournament now. They are top rank in their group which contains Saugeais, veterans of RWC 16, and rugby newbies Urumgard. The team, despitetheir unsatisfactory performance in the world cup, will be looking to cruise through the group undefeated, before facing a tough test in semi's against either 8th ranked Mytannion, or 'best' team in the tournament, Kulverint, and their rank of 3rd. Only time will tell, but the tournament sure has the makings of a cracker.

Setu Kamra analysed the footage of their last game; a friendly against Soviet Massacre. The team had won, but the should have won by more than they did. The final score was 24-16 to Loonaterian. This wasn't bad, but Setu Kamra knew the team could deliver more. The team had shown something they were famed for; their toughness. They were after all former Loonaterese soldiers, mainly marines and paratroopers. These guys were tough. But they hadn't shown another quality they had; determination. They hadn't pushed for the Soviet Massacre try line hard enough and their performance had suffered as a result.

After the training session Setu Kamra called his players in for a meeting.

Setu Kamra wrote:Right, boys. Good session? It didn't look like it! Where was that army determination, huh? During the session I was mainly analysng the footage of the match against Soviet Massacre, but occasionally I had a look out th window and saw what you showed at the game against Soviet Massacre. A total lack of that army determination. Where was it? I didn't see it. I know you're probably thinking; we won so what's your problem, coach. Yes, you won. But Kulverint and Mytannion are a lot better than Soviet Massacre. You need to step up your game otherwise we'll be humiliated.

Saugeais Sports Briefs
Rugby team looking for ego boost with tournament

The Saugeais national rugby teams, league and union, haven't had the type of seasons they'd like to have had. Both of them were knocked out in their respective World Cups and haven't had any matches since, making the players really down in the dumps as of late even though the Union team is 7th in the world. But lo and behold, the Göteborg Invitational has come our way and the Eagles are going to make a comeback. Head coach Stephan Strauss had this to say, "Our team has been in constant practice mode, not really gaining anything and not playing anyone either. That's why I'm glad Swartaz came up with this tournament idea and asked us to be a part of it. It'll give our boys a great place to show their talents and work off the rust this long international lay-off has been." While the tournament only has 6 nations participating, they are 6 of the best teams this world has to offer. Along with us and the host Swartaz, Kulverint, Mytannion, Loonaterian, and Urumgard have all joined up for this little venture. All but Urumgard is in the world rankings, but that doesn't mean they should be taken lightly. Ulrich and Albert, the two props, have the best speed on the team and should definitely be on the lookout for, in case one of them breaks a big run.

The Eagles were drawn into Group B and will face the hosts Swartaz and the previously mentioned Urumgard. Swartaz is ranked 7th in the world and why not? With the speed of Jamie Ahlström and hard tackling of Oskar Persson and Victor Jackal, Swartaz will prove to be a great challenge for the Eagles right off the bat for the first match. Make sure to tune in to SNN Sports 2 tomorrow night if you can't make it out to STAI Stadium in Arçon and cheer on you Eagles!

Kulverint grab victory over Mytannion
4 tries signal return of Wilhelmus Farransza to the international stage

A great victory was completed in the Stadia de la Kulverint last evening when recently injured Kulverintian players Wilhelmus Farransza and Jeroen Berdoas made their return to rugby after both fell off the scene, for different reasons, after the Rugby World Cup. The supporters were cheering both onto the pitch. The team were, however, not in top shape as they conceded 23 points to their own 28.

The game began in the usual Kulverintian fashion of pushing hard to demoralise the opponents early, and being able to relax early on. Wilhelmus Farransza was seeking to prove his doubters wrong by pushing from the beginning, and he nearly scored the first time he touched the ball. He was brought down by the fullback, just. However, in the 12th minute Loppinia and Dominica completed a great dummy to fool the opposition, before passing out to an unchallenged Farransza, who barged his way through the fullback to score a brilliant try in the middle, which was then converted by Jeroen Berdoas. Mytannion, however, were not to be outdone, and an early drop goal for them got things going nicely for them. They then pushed further forward, scoring a try in the corner that was, thankfully, missed. Kulverint were now behind, and so were going to make Mytannion pay for that, two tries in 2 minutes showed Kulverint's determination to push forward, and signalled the end of the half. The second half began with a Mytannion try almost the moment the whistle went. This one was converted, and followed up by a penalty for a high tackle, which was also scored. Mytannion then pushed forward with another try, again bringing them ahead of Kulverint. What was needed was one last push, which was given by a determined Wilhelmus Farransza. He pushed through no less than six tackles on his way to the tryline to give Kulverint victory, as he thought he had 4 months ago.

Kulverint will have to improve for next week's game against Loonaterian, as points advantages could be key in this group. The same starting lineup will probably be used, and Wilhelmus Farransza is once more a force to be reckoned with.

Kulverint 28 - 23 Mytannion

Tries: Farransza (12, 38, 39)
Conversions: Berdoas (12, 38, 39)

Swartaz comfortably turn over Saugeais to signal return to international stage

Göteborg was alive with the sound of rugby fans last night as Swartaz disposed of a below par Saugeais team in the new purpose bulit rugby stadium on the outskirts of Göteborg, Svennonsteigspa. The new stadium can fit 100,000 fans and the ground was sold out for it's debut game, with 90,000 Swartaz fans making themselves well and truly heard to provide a brilliant electric atmosphere for the Saugeais team, who were first out.

On paper, the game looked very close. 7th ranked Swartaz vs 14th ranked Saugeais. Both teams had similar world cups, both of them going out well before expected. Mika Klum got the game underway with a superb kick deep into the opposision half to mark his first touch of a rugby ball in a Swartaz first 15. Alexi Bergström and Matteus Mård did well to chase the kick, trapping a helpless François Martinique in the corner, and turning it over deep in enemy territory. Victor Jackal did well to hold the ball up to forge a play in which Klum ran onto the ball, bursting through 3 tackles before being upended by a ferocious tackle by Carlos Mendoza right on the line. Saugeais were then penalised for hands, and Swartaz had their first 3 points, with Klum slotting home a simple kick from 15 yards. The next 20 minutes were full of ruck after ruck after ruck, with Swartaz patiently pushing the ball forward in the hope of forcing a gap. They magnificently turned over what looked like safe ball for Saugeais, and Victor Jackal decided to take it himself. He took the ball and danced through at least 5 Saugeais players before sliding to a try underneath the posts for 8-0 after 21 minutes. Klum easily coverted to give Swartaz a convincing 10-0 lead at half time.

Both teams were visibly fired up coming out into the second half, and it became apparent very early in the second half that Adrian Warrant in particular was going out to take someone out, and he succeeded on 44 minutes when he took Sebastian Larsson to the floor right round the neck at pace. The ref was having none of it however, and put the flanker right in the sinbin. Down to 14 men, Saugeais were unable to keep up the momemtum, and Victor Jackal again struck on 46 minutes, the number 9 making a 70 yard dazzling rush to the line before touching down under the posts. Klum converted another easy kick to make it 17-0 to Swartaz. Within a minute, Swartaz had struck again, with brilliant passing down the line cumilating in Benidikt Ljunberg touching down in the far corner for 22-0. With the wind blowing hard now, Klum failed with the tricky conversion, but it failed to dampen the mood in the stands, where drunken chants were ecstaticlly belted out by the Swartazian fans. The players fell into cruise control from then on, and that ment the Saugeais were increaingly getting to the breakdown first and creating more and more chances. This payed off on 70 minutes, when Charles Du Bois powered through a gap in the Swartaz back line to make it 22-5. The consolation try was also converted, and within two minutes Saugeais had added 3 points to their total, but Swartaz did not have a problem, the match was already in the bag. Jackal went over on 77 minutes for his hat-trick, and rightfully scooping up a man of the match award for his brilliant tries. Final score: Swartaz 32-10 Saugeais

'Napisannyh dlya bolelʹshchikov, na Poklonnikov.'

by Tomas Tscheterschow

Our first game in the Goteborg Invitational ended in a narrow loss to the highest-ranked team in the tournament. Kulverint managed to out, beating our team by 28 to 23.

Wilhelmus Farransza had a brilliant game for Kulverint running in four tries, to basically win the game by himself. Our answer was pretty good, and fly-half Omar Nijholt had a good game in his debut international for the national side. Farransza ran in an early try to put Kulverint 5-up, and then Jeroen Berdoas converted a long-range kick to put the Kulverintians 7-0 ahead. We got into early drop-goal range and as scrum-half Piotr Chevin pretended to pass and instead just flipped it back to Nijholt who split the uprights to make the score 7-3. Three minutes later, Nijholt broke through the defensive line to sprint through to score a try in the corner, the chasing players forcing him out to the byline before he could go over. The long conversion couldn't be made and narrowly passed the upright. The score was now 10-7, the narrow scoreline keeping the game competitive.

There wasn't anymore scores until just before half-time. Wilhelmus Farransza getting his second try of the game, and then very quickly his third as he ran over the tryline twice in two minutes. A near unthinkable feat against our team whose power is built on their good defending. As halftime passed, our team ran back out and quickly got back in the game with a try from fullback, Bergmundur Jakobsson - the 18 year old cutting through the Kulverintian team like a knife through butter and showing the hard-running game that coach, Ryan Turner has tried to introduce throughout the team. As Nijholt kicked the game off, our players chased and managed to collect the ball. Orkeny Makai set-up a ruck waiting for Chevin to come and pass the ball out of the ruck - however Farransza decided to use his hands in the ruck which gave us a penalty which Nijholt duly kicked through the posts to make the score 21-20 to Kulverint with plenty of time to go.

It ended up looking like we would need the amount of time left as Piotr Chevin chased the kick-off down and jinked and twirled his way through defenders to cross the line. The conversion was missed from Nijholt, as it pounded off the post from the wide-right position. It was now 23-21 to Mytannion and it looked like we had the game in the bag until the 73rd minute when Farransza crossed again for his fourth try. Securing the game for Kulverint and leaving us with no chance to comeback with the time left on the clock.

The team will want to turn around the tournament with a win against Loonaterian on Monday, which will be played at The Barracks in Loonaterian. A win would turn around the group stage as Kulverint are expected to beat Loonaterian tonight and would put us in a position to qualify from our group and get to the knockout stage of the tournament.

Omar Nijholt said after the game, "Well, the boys played well out there today but obviously not quite good enough. Kulverint are a good side and when a player like Wilhelmus Farransza is on top-form, well it is hard to stop them - even with a top-class squad like the one we have. I mean, that performance could beat many a good team - but Kulverint managed to get to the World Cup final - and it isn't hard to see why, congratulations has to go to them really. Well done..."

Kulverint achieve second win in Göteborg Invitational
Victory seeming close after narrow win over Loonaterian

The Kulverintian rugby team pulled off a nerve wracking victory over a surprisingly strong Loonaterian in the Göteborg Invitational yesterday, with Wilhelmus Farransza again delivering a powerful, and, eventually, decisive set of four tries on seemingly his best form yet.

The surprise of the game was Loonaterian's determination for victory, which showed in their large points haul. Indeed, kicker Jimprik Natui kicked off the game with a determinedly deep kick to try and catch out the Kulverintian forwards, however they were not to be outdone, and Dominica put on a burst of pace to strike clear of the line, with only the powerful tackle of Paka stopping a try in the first minute for Kulverint. They kept on the pressure, however, and eventually Farransza managed to burst through a tackle by Krink, before powerfully charging through Paka, lightly injuring the full back and necessitating his replacement with Guydo coming on. The try was scored beneath the posts, and so Berdoas' conversion was simple. Loonaterian, however, managed to hit back with a great run by Frantu down Kulverint's left side, before popping the ball out to Nimphui who broke through Kouralavska's tackle to score in the corner. This was then converted, just, by Natui to bring the score back to 7-7. Loonaterian then seemed to decide that playing defensively would get them the points they needed, and this was what they did, however, the forgot to cover for Wilhelmus Farransza, who suddenly broke, again crashing through Krink, before taking down Natui and scoring in the corner. Berdoas easily got the conversion, and so Kulverint had a 14-7 lead once more. Loonaterian were paying for going the wrong way, and they immediately went attacking again. They looked like a try was beckoning when Berdoas kicked out the ball to induce half time.

When the break was over, however, Kulverint were seemingly still having it when Kanumana made a brilliant run straight through the centre of Kulverint's pack, and though Janni Kulverint made the tackled, he offloaded to Junana, and Loonaterian's captain scored a try right underneath the posts, and the score was evened with Natui's simple kick. Loonaterian then took the lead when a run down the left side of the pitch made it to a five on one on Farransza, who buckled, choosing to take out the ball carrier, Krink, who offloaded just before he hit and the try was scored. Krink was up and running after a few checks, although he was winded by the challenge. The conversion was scored by Natui to give Loonaterian a 21-14 lead. Berdoas' kick went high and short, and so Mirolasvi managed to catch the kick, and so the play began. Goig through phase after phase after phase, until eventually, in the 18th phase, the ball went wide, and to the right. Dominica was tackled and the ball went flying, but Farransza jumped, caught it, powered through a tackle by Küst before giving a hard hand off to Marti, who was subsequently substituted for Marn. He pushed through one final challenge on the line by Guydo to score a brilliant try. When Berdoas converted, it was 21-21. There were only ten minutes left when Kulverint really began to go super attacking, but the Loonaterese defence was strong enough to hold out whilst they pushed harder and harder in the rucks, mauls and scrums. With two minutes left, Loonaterian made a mistake. They went for a grab at victory. Getting the ball out wide, they only needed to get it out to Krink and they were away. As the pass was made 80 minutes struck. As Farransza intercepted at top speed at was 80:01. No-one was going to stop Farransza at this speed, and he dived for the corner, scoring a brilliant try. Berdoas didn't try with the kick. He didn't need to. Kulverint had won a brilliantly close game, and that was all that mattered.

Kulverint have a break next, whilst Mytannion play Loonaterian, before the team travels to the cold, Scandinavian nation, where they will feel right at home. After this, they will travel to Loonaterian, where Morbidella and Namora will be right at home, playing for Zwartania's rugby team in the league. Then it is, hopefully, on to the semi finals and, eventually, the final of the tournament.
