There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night
Ten to make and the match to win
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,
An hour to play, and the last man in.
And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat.
Or the selfish hope of a season's fame,
But his captain's hand on his shoulder smote
"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

Spitfyred1 21 - 19 Civil Citizenry
A good start to the world cup, a victory by the All-Whiites against a famous NS Sports country. The men worked hard and earned the win. Some exciting try's were scored by Erik and Sergei, while the Forwards pushed their way in for another.
Hopefully, this is the first in a string of victories for the all whites

LNNN: Narrow defeat!

Postby Loonaterian » Sat Jan 15, 2011 2:05 pm

Loonaterian suffered a narrow defeat to Lycrabon, 28-24. The "Soldiers" didn't play at their best and paid the price. Loonaterian didn't score a single try in the game, but Jimprik Natui was on top form scoring 8/8 penalties. Lycrabon scored 2 converted tries, one non-converted try and 3 penalties. The game dosn't bode well for the actual World Cup especially as Lycrabon is in our group.

Jimprik Natui scores a penalty:

Postby Colmark » Sat Jan 15, 2011 5:09 pm

Colmark suffered a narrow defeat in a pre-world cup friendly to group rivals Arizus, going down 22-24. A fired up Colamrkian side started the stronger, and spent the first 10 minutes camped inside Arizus territory, but despite the pressure no points came, and after 15 minutes it was Arizus who opened the scoring with a suberbly executed backs move ending up with a try under the posts. Arizus extended the lead 5 minutes later with a penalty. Colmark entered back into the game after a period of sustained pressure, as the forwards exerted their dominance, and James Stevenson kicked a penalty to send Colmark into half time 7 points down. Arizus scored an unconverted try straight from the kick off as they caught Colmark napping, and added a penalty 10 minutes later to make the score 21-3. It was after this that Colmark came to life, as a rolling maul drove over the line, with Graham Hunter in control, and Stevenson added the extras. Colmark's best period of the game came between 60 and 70 minutes, and this was rewarded with a penalty try as the Urizus scrum splintered under pressure. Colmark took the lead for the only time in the game on 71 minutes as the ever-dangerous Adam Harbaugh steamrollered past the initial defence before offloading to Allan Harvis, who touched down in the corner, but Stevenson failed to convert, making it 22-21 to Colmark. Arizus, however, rallied and put together a long attack, driving downfield, before slotting a drop-goal with a minute to go.
"It was a hard fought game and I believe that it will be the same when we meet in the group stages, we had dominance through the forwards but our backs failed to produce, and that is something that we need to address. However I am proud of the way that we got back in the game and I look with confidence to our World Cup Campaign." Explained Tom Carlson, Head Coach.

ISLAND NEWS

Khytenna narrowly defeated in freindly!

Khytenna 17 - 19 Churchma

Reporter David Day

Khytenna played a great game of rubgy, but thanks to the Churchma Backs it was they who ended up on top.

Khytenna was first to get on the score sheet, thanks to an early drive by to forward pack towards to posts, Callahan pealed of the maul a made a break inbertween the sticks, he was stoped by two forwards from going over for a try, but a simple mistake by a Churchma player saw him trying to enter the ruck from the side, the referee saw it and gave the penalty straight away (lucky not to give away a penalty try!) an amiture mistake that Khytenna took advantage of, Dawson scored the kick, making the game 3-0. Churchma came back 20 minutes later, a scrum was given in there half, the Scrum-Half got the ball out and made a floating pass to the outside centre, taking the Khytennan defense of guard, the ball was given to the winger who shot down towards the try line, he was stoped by the Knapp. just before the try line, but the pack was there to support the winger, and the Number 8 went over for the try. the conversion was missed (thanks to a slip by the fly-half) and the score was 5-3. Khytenna made sure they went to the dressing rooms with the first half lead, the Khytenna pack drove down the pich, makming small ground and small ground, but managed to get to the 25 meters line (after the 25th phase!) Jaxon made a dumby pass and made some more ground towards the tryline, he was stoped by the forwards again, but a quick recycle of the ball made saw Luke Ballard drive his way over the tryline, the Referee called for the Video ref, which showed that Ballad just made it over for a try, Dawson Converted the try (even tho it went in of the post) makeing the score 10-5 to Khytenna at the end of the first half.

Churchma was the lucky ones in the second half, thanks to there fast back line. there second try came from a inside centre, a text book sisser pass between the fly half and the outside centre made a gap in the defensive line, it back a two on one with Churchma's inside and outside centers with the full back knapp, a simple pop pass made sure that the outside centre went over the try line unopposed, the Conversion was a simple one, and went over to make the score 12-10 to Churchma. Churchma's third and final try came from the winger, Khytenna had a line out just in there half, which was thrown to far by Blake, the Churchma Scrum half managed to get the ball to the fly half who started to pass the ball down the line till it got to the winger who made a dash to the tryline, Knapp got to him and made the tackle, but the the winger went over for the try (his foot was centimeters from going out of touch) that try was also converted, making the score 19-10. Khytenna managed to Pull a try back, after 10 minutes of drive towards the tryline, Khytennas Jaxon manged to squeeze his way over the tryline for a fantastic try! which was converted by the Sub Ryan Green.

the Game ended 19-17 to Churchma, but Khytenna should be proud of that game, which they did indeed play superb.

Jamie Felix said at the end of the game "unfortunitly, the scoreline doesn't reflect the effort we put into this game, we worked are buts off! but Churchma got some great breaks which lead to them getting the 3 trys that won them the game, i think that the better side lost today, and thats an honest fact, but thats the game we play, and we got to take one on the chin and move on"

Islands news Khytenna player of the match: Ryan Jaxon: the Captain played supreb, a great leader also managed to cordinate attacks and the defense very well, made good passes when he needed to and made good run when they where needed, great game for the young captain.

Strong Apples Start RWC Off Poorly

Shannon Noébrand is disappointed in his team's performance against Saugeais in their send-off test before the 16th Rugby World Cup, Cotdelapoms' first. The Cotdelapomais number 8 scored two tries and was a whirling dervish, one which the big Saugeais forwards had a terrible time trying to catch. Unfortunately for him, his teammates were not quite as successful.

"We're going to have to be a lot better at containing guys, we're going to have to work a lot harder with the ball, we're going to have to ruck better, maul better...I believe in this bunch, and I know I am going to try my hardest, but if we want to win this tournament we can't play like we did today" Noébrand told Radio-Cotdelapoms after the test.

Noébrand's two tries were complemented by two penalties from Newport's Johann Racicot, who also missed two penalties. On sports talk radio, tiny fly-half Noël Coderre received a lot of abuse, as he had an absolutely dreadful outing, generally running right into the Saugeais forwards and never disposing of the ball quite quickly enough. Manager Frédéric Jolicœur has confirmed however, that Coderre will be in the 15 to face Moromarr in the first match of the tournament.

Postby Virabia » Sat Jan 15, 2011 9:01 pm

The headquarters of the VRA have been unusually busy, each person working diligently to prepare a team for the Rugby Union World Cup. The team still lacked many of the essentials such as staff, kits and most importantly players. Since their appearance in the Six Nations, Virabia's interest in Fiveens has taken a sharp downturn as if it was even possible to go down from the already injured the state the sport was in. In response to the diminishing popularity of the sport, the VRA has slowly dismantled the Rugby Union Office and as such the sport has gone largely ungoverned, the RUO acting much like a monarch does in many constitutional monarchies.

Since sport had fallen so far, people were genuinely surprised when the VRA suddenly made a bid for the sixteenth Rugby World Cup. Ever since the day the aforementioned bid was submitted, those within the RUO have been unusually busy. What very few of them know, however, is that all of it has been at the hands of one man.

Juan, a thin Esperanto man in his late twenties was at his desk working through a list of managerial prospects when a stockier man knocked loudly upon the door. Startled, Juan looked up from his work and called, "Come in"

The man, who he saw to be his boss opened the door and stood in the doorway. Confused as to why his boss was visiting him Juan asked, "What is it?"

"Juan, my office, now!" his boss exclaimed angrily.

Without a word, Juan got up and followed his boss to his [his bosses'] office which was just across the octagon. Once they were both in his bosses office, his boss closed the door behind him and commanded his subordinate to sit down.

"Que," asked Juan, "Po'que am I in here?"

"You know why you're in here!" his bosses anger hadn't cooled down, "What the fuck did you think you'd accomplish by not only entering but bidding to host the Union World Cup?"

"I...I," Juan searched for phrasing that he thought his boss would perhaps accept but, he knew that search was frivolous. No matter what he said, his boss would still be mad so, instead of buttering it up with BS, he decided to tell the straight truth, "Well, you see, I had hoped that perhaps our entry and potential hosting of the World Cup would perhaps revitalise the standing of the sport in this country. Sir, you know that I really love this game. I just don't want to see it die"

While Juan's words did not sway the opinion of his boss, he [his boss] was slightly moved by Juan's youthful enthusiasm. Nevertheless, he had to lay down the law,"I know you love the sport, and I love it too but, at some point you have to face reality. Union is dead in Virabia. We haven't had a professional league in over five years, and you know as well as I do that in the final years of the RUL, the league was on extensive life support. We also lack the infrastructure necessary to hold on an event of such a magnitude."

"We have the stadiums," Juan protested.

"Infrastructure is much more than just stadiums and you know that" his boss then continued upon his earlier train of thought, "Plus, even if infrastructure weren't an issue, I highly doubt that we'd get enough fans to fill the stands, Sure, we can count on forigners to fill some seats but, they are nowhere close to being as reliable as domestic fans. For many of them, they lack the finances to go to more than one or two games. Finally, even if that were a non issue. There is one problem that we'd face no matter what. We no longer have the talent pool to to field anything but a team of the lowest of quality. Most of the players we had at the Six Nations, who, by the way, were not all that great, have retired and the two that remain are way too old."

Juan had to let this digest for a little while. All of what his boss said was true, the sport of union was on it's death bead. The obituary already written.

"So, what should I do. Should I call the organisers and withdraw?", asked Juan.

"No, even if I wanted you to do that, it's too late for that. Plus, I foresee this as being one last hurrah for the sport. So, go out and continue assembling whatever you can for the team," said his boss.

Juan nodded and pushed out his chair but, before he could stand up, his boss interrupted him, "Before you do that, please apologise to the people out there. After all, they have been working harder at your fault."
