  1. List your teams in any order in a column in Excel
  2. Add a column with nothing but =RAND() in the next column.
  3. Select both columns and sort by the second one. Ascending/Descending doesn't matter.
  4. Your first X teams are in Group A, the next X are Group B, etc.
  5. Draw done.

I believe that's how I did the draw for WKC 2.

Actually, this is basically what we did in World Cup 68.

Here's what I normally do for a draw:

  1. Determine which teams go into which pots
  2. Go to random.org
  3. Choose the "List Randomizer"
  4. Place Pot 1 into the randomizer
  5. Press randomize
  6. Put teams into groups based upon the order
  7. Repeat for each additional pot
  8. Post the draw on the event thread

A live draw is something that I just don't see the point in. Why drag out the process of the draw unnecessarily?

Another drawback of a live draw is that hosts sometimes forget to post the groups on the event thread afterwards. For example, the WBC draw supposedly happened on IRC last night, but the groups still aren't up.

Now that's how you perform a draw.

I always think a "live" draw would best be performed beforehand, so you already know the groups, to prevent any errors occuring, and to make it run more smoothly. Another idea I've occasionally thought of is doing an animated draw ceremony of sorts.

We aim for realism in our NSWC, even if that means the bloated, pointless ceremonies of the live draw.

Well, yes. NSwiki. But that's been down for quite some time now, and is unlikely to ever be available again. You can, however, check out the NS Sports Jolt Archives, which have a lot of the old NSWC stuff on them.

I've actually been considering making an archives thread/post for the old WC stuff similar to the WCC section I've maintained on the NS Sports History thread, but haven't had the time to do so. Though with summer just around the corner, I might finally get around to it.

Well, you've kinda hit us in a mid-period here. World Bowl (gridiron football) just finished, IBC (basketball) is nearly over, WBC (baseball) is about 1/4 of the way through, and WCoH (hockey) just started. World Cup (association football/soccer) signups may or may not start soon, depending on a bid being posted and whatever people want to do about the coincidence with the RL World Cup. So, stick around for smaller events (like World Hoops Showcase and International Baseball Slam), regional events (for which you'll have to join a sports region) and perhaps the World Cup.

May I use the names of the nations in NS Sports for my domestic newswire? Consider that NSAFF is not a nation; it is a governing body (NationStates Association Football Federation). I wanted to create something similar to FIFA just for fun.

1. We already have a governing body for football in NS, as SJG mentioned. The WCC is FIFA for all intentions and purposes and runs the World Cup and associated tournaments. There are also regional governing bodies for the major sporting regions, running the regional championships, set up by the regions themselves.
2. Any worldwide governing body you try and use outside of these groups would largely be unrecognised by the football world at large. This does not mean you cannot do it, of course, but you can't (by forum rules) start a competitor "World Cup", which may cause confusion with the 'real' one.
3. There is nothing to stop you writing about other nations in your RPs, so long as you are not inventing anything that goes on within their control, and are just reporting the 'facts' as you see them.

Or you can do what I have done repeatedly and report a combination of propaganda and lies about other nations but make it clear that it's not true IC-ly even though everyone in your nation believes the "news" reports. Here is an example of how to do that. Here is an example that would be better suited for sportswires, though the former would be acceptable as an RP during an event (which is what it was.)

Edit: If you're that keen on starting a soccer federation, you could make one for your region provided you have the permission of your regionmates. An established sporting region would likely not let a new user like you do that, but if you've been in a typical region for a while, and there's interest, they might be ok with it. Post on your RMB. It couldn't be the equivalent of FIFA, but if it governs something not yet done in this forum, that would be OK. For instance, to my knowledge we have not yet done any college soccer in this forum. While I would not advise trying to start it for a number of reasons (inexperience, lack of interest in college soccer, lack of RP in other college sports that are much more popular than college soccer) it wouldn't violate any written or unwritten forum rules. Of course, I've probably been to more college soccer games than anyone else on this forum IRL, and maybe every active user combined (50 to be exact) and I would have little to no interest in RPing college soccer here, even if it was organized by an experienced user. But the point is that hypothetically speaking, you could create a federation to organize it assuming I am correct that it was never done before.

There were Volleyball World Expos in the past, but they drew very little RP over 6 editions. There was also a signup thread for a volleyball tournament back in January, but the tournament never started (even though it had enough signups).

In terms of domestic leagues, 95X has/had a domestic volleyball league (last post in the thread was last December), but a search of the forum for volleyball did not bring up a domestic newswire.

Is that a question, or a statement?

Most of us do not make our own jerseys. We ask those in the community with more skill to do it. Search for kit makers on the forum. Note that you will have to meet the criteria set by the maker.

I don't follow this thread much and just saw this earlier today.

The Volleyball World Expos were originally run by Carasatoga, who's since left NS. Whether or not they were successful depends on whom you talk to (95X looks at IC pictures of three championship teams from 95X).

There were actually two proposed tournaments in January, 2014, both didn't even make it to their opening serve for various reasons (including concerns by another member of the NS Sports community who also participated in the VWEs, and also recently left). To be honest, there's quite a few other tournaments going on here while many who are normally active are watching the RL World Cup, or tending to RL stuff during Northern Hemisphere Summer; another NSWC seems likely to start around the time the RL WC ends. (Deliberations about doing anything while the NSWC is going on goes nowhere fast.)

So, those of us who like sports other than association football/soccer have our work cut out for us: introduce new people to NS Sports who would participate/actively RP in non-association football/soccer tournaments.

And, yes, the National Volleyball League is still going on IC. My reason for not posting anything there since December has to do with some discontinuous continuity issues. I'm still working out some of the wrinkles in the 95X time continuum. It's always nice to see someone else also start up a thread dedicated to their domestic volleyball league.
