Message From Phanafian Sports Deparment To All Nations:

The Phanafian Sports Department will be hosting the 2010 Phanafian Summer Olympics! It will be held in Jupiter II Stadium in our Capital City of New Laos (Outdoor sports held in separate locations). The games included are Soccer, Basketball, Parachuting (Outdoor), Swimming, Football, Bungee Jumping (Outdoor), and many other Olympic Activities! All nations around the world are encouraged to join, and all that is required is that you fill out this application stating that your Nation will be participating in the 2010 NPO. Here is the form:

Why take part in the NPO?
The NPO is a traditional Sports event for Phanafians since 1946. The winner will have an exhibit at the Phanafian Sports Hall of Fame in Seanite. Not only this, but the winner of the finals in any sports category of the NPO will go home with the 2010 Golden Plate Medal, and the winner of ALL sports categories will win the Feldman Trophy.

This is a different event than International Olympics. And I don't know what the hell a scorinator is.

Ah, of course. I wasn't familiar with the term, it doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about. A computer will keep track of all scores for each game, and once checked by a human after each game, the winner is determined. If you do not wish to participate, be my guest, but this is the most honored sports events in Phanafian History.

No, you may not suggest random.org. With random.org there is no involvement of RPing, active involvement of nations, and to be honest, takes far too long. I may suggest XKoranate though, a true scorinator (albeit very difficult).

Don't tell people what you can and can't do. Although yes, random.org is not the best scorinator, you can better the ranges that are higher ranked and/or RP more. And what makes you so high and mighty to say that you can suggest things and everyone else can't? Absolutely nothing.

xkoranate is not, in fact, not very difficult to use, but also takes a long time if you want to run anything close in size to the actual Olympics. You could probably get the hang of it after a little bit. There's a link is Commerce Heights' sig, as well as one somewhere in the second page of the thread titled "Scorinators".

You clearly misunderstand the point of RPing. You RP, it is included in the scorination, you have a greater chance of winning. Without the RP bonus, there is no point RPing. Without a point of RPing or a scorinator, very little, if any people will sign up.

You clearly misunderstand what he just said. Apply or leave. It's a simple request. He may not completely understand and may do it differently from what's normal/recommended, but that's his business.

First of all, there's no need for that 'GTFO' - being rude to people won't enhance the popularity of your event, or increase your chances of finding participants. It might also tempt one of those nasty, interfering mods to hand out a warning and/or lock a thread - especially if the OP has previously received a warning or ban for drunken flame-spamming (hint, hint).

Some general points to consider:

A) You're perfectly within your rights to host a Phanafian Olympics. I see no conflict between this proposed event and the broader NationStates Olympics as this is clearly an event specifically held within, and internal to, one nation, even if it does welcome external participants. So no problem there.

B) While some of the nations posting in this thread have leaned on you rather heavily as regards the scorinator issue (and can we please take the discussion of scorinators to the OOC scorination discussion thread), they have a point. For better or for worse, NS Sport has a strong established culture where participants expect to see more detail on how results are to be generated than:

If those details aren't forthcoming, they won't sign up. Now, there are rare cases where nations are able to come up with some sort of original system for generating scores that doesn't involve computers, but where these are successful, again there is usually plenty of detail offered (and the nation is usually fairly well known and respected).


It would be a shame if the established NS Sport culture - which some people are perhaps a little too aggressive in defending at times - entirely discourages you from hosting a Phanafian Olympics at some point. I would strongly suggest participating in a couple of events to get a feel for how things work around here, and then maybe having another go.

But patience, politeness, and transparency will serve you better here than telling people to "GTFO".

This is quite different from how most of us are used to doing things - it's actually the other way round from it - but we shouldn't all just pile upon a guy because they're running something differently.

My point isn't so much that Communist Phanafia must have a recognised scorinator for his Phanafian Olympics, but rather that more detail should be provided on how the competition should be run. This need not include a traditional NS Sport scorinator so long as there's clarity about how the event will be run.

Apologies if I wasn't entirely clear on that point myself (and re-reading my last post, I didn't quite get the emphasis I was looking for; sorry).

Recently, we've had a rash of people immediately jumping on new NS Sport participants for not having a traditional or recognised scorinator. I submit that this isn't necessarily always constructive - or encouraging of new participants - and that there should be scope for occasionally doing things differently.

The important thing is to ensure that there's clarity.
