Handball World Cup 17 (Everything Thread)

Postby The Royal Kingdom of Quebec » Fri Aug 12, 2016 9:28 pm

Welcome to the 17th Handball World Cup!

Dear 32 nations, hundreds of players, millions of fans and haters. Welcome to the Multiverse's most storied, historic handball competition here, live in the historic city of Quebec City. The competition brings us forward to the nation's capital, as 32 nations look to prepare themselves ahead of their battle for glory, victory and achievement. Will Costa de Ouro land its fourth consecutive Handball World Cup title, or will it be the hosts whom, after a poor organisation by the Handball Quebec that led to the sending of high schoolers in that last disastrous campaign, be able to take full advantage of home field? Or will it be your nation who races against insurmountable odds to clench the trophy before your eyes and nation cheering?

Of course, the best way to increase your team's chances of success is to post a roster and regular roleplays. If you are unsure what these should look like, look at others' in this thread and read the Guide to Sports Roleplaying.

The Royal Gadiryan Handball Federation (RGHF) presents
The Gadiryan National Handball Team

Handball is Gadirya's traditional national sport, mainly because you can play Handball in a small, indoor arena where the Gadiryan heat is shutout by modern miracle of AC. Handball, like football was introduced to Gadirya by Felixian immigrants coming from the French speaking regions of Felix in the 4th Era. As part of a sweeping effort to reform Gadirya from an isolationist, conservative nation he has decided to form a national Handball Federation to promote the sport locally and to send Gadirya's finest into the Handball World Cup. The first duty for the Royal Gadiryan Handball Federation was to submit a team and if this team does well in the Handball World Cup form a Handball league to strengthen the sport domestically. The following players are all semi-professionals and have careers in other professions and are coached by former World Cup winning goalkeeper from Felix, Ezio Dinapoli.

The Felixian Handball Association (FHA) presents
The Felixian National Handball Team

After a hiatus from World Cup Handball due to civil war and political and societal dysfunction following the end of the war the one time world champions and two time runner up is back to take back what's rightfully theirs. As part of a nationalist campaign to reignite the love for country this Handball team will have the task of inspiring Felixians back at home that Felix is back and relevant and of course make it as deep as they can in his tournament. Remnants of the elite team that finished 2nd twice in a row are still here with veteran Milo Milošević leading the team along with other people familiar with World Cup Handball such as goalkeeper Mikel, leftback Ivanka Knezevic, rightbacks Jagoda Filipovic and Lluc Puig, and left wingers Maia Ola and the last active World Cup winning player Ambrosio Del Olmo who will most likely retire after this World Cup. Add this experience and young, up-incoming talent from Felix's best Handball clubs with legendary manager Toño Crespo, that might be coaching his final tournament, and Felix looks to contend for the trophy in Quebec.

The Reformist

"Order! Order!" Shouted Speaker Khaled Issa, but to no avail. The House of Commons was in full disarray with the debating time coming to an end. The Yes and No side at this point were yelling at each other, neither side wanting the other to speak. The pommel strikes the gravel five times, finally the MPs stopped shouting at each other, realizing that time was up and the voting was soon going to commence. Khaled Issa wipes sweat off his brow, clearly stressed by that shouting match. He clears his throat and turns on his mic, "The vote for the 'Union Act' the act allowing the Kingdom of Gadirya to sign up for the yet to be officially named 'Esportivan Community' has begun, please vote, 'aye', 'nay', or 'abstain' with the corresponding button. You have 30 minutes to cast your vote."

The voting soon began, the once raucous House of Commons gave way to silence with the occasional clicking indicating a vote has been casted. 5 minutes passed and yes was leading, 27 to 14. All 21 MPs that were in government voted yes in the first two minutes, the rest of the MPs were slow to make their decision. Another 5 minutes passed, 54 for, 50 against, and 2 abstaining. Speaker Issa looked at Mohammed Haik, the Prime Minister, with a slightly nervous look, "The vote is getting close Haik." Mohammed nodded acknowledging his observation. At the halfway point it stood 60 votes for against 50 with 8 abstaining. It seemed like the yes vote was going to reach that 76 majority first. At the 25 minute mark it was clear, the yes vote won with 5 minutes left. 80 votes for, 61 against, and 9 abstaining.

Speaker Issa adjusted the mic and smiled, "It seems like the 'Union Act' has passed with a majority of 80 votes for to 61 against and 9 abstaining, before we conclude business tonight we must vote on the specifics of joining this regionwide organization. The first piece is whether or not to give up the Gadiryan Pound for a potential new form of currency. This piece will be voted tonight. The second piece is not related to the 'Union Act', this next piece is to whether or not join another pan-Esportivan organization called the Southern Esportivan Treaty Organization or SETO for short. This piece will be voted a two weeks and day from today. Two weeks of debate should be enough to explain both the benefits and risks of joining a military organization of this magnitude." Issa pauses and clears his throat, "Okay, fellow MPs, please get ready to cast your votes for this next part of 'Union Act'."

Another 30 minutes passed and the result for the currency change vote was way closer than the previous vote. 77 for, 73 against. But, it still passed and with that Gadirya was on its way to join a pan-Esportivan union. Never in the 5 Eras that a nation has been on the Home Islands been this close to the region of Esportiva, politically or economically. The island nation drifted from isolation to contact frequently but now, seems like the people of the Kingdom has decided to join the international community, this time, permanently.
Esportiva, it's the business!

Santa Maria, Felix
Present Day

"The votes are in." smiled the Vice Chancellor, "Felix will officially join the Esportivan Community." Enrique Lagos was pleased, his use of his Chief Whip, Philip Hardwood made the process easy and simple. Much cleaner that say what happened to their ally, Gadirya that was rumored to have their debates devolved into a shouting match between yes and no parties. Another thing that Felix and Gadirya differed was the fact that Felix refused to give up their strong Felixian Dollar for a potentially new regional currency. Even though Felix might have been divided into different pieces the currency was used in all 16 separate states as all of them couldn't just drop a strong and stable currency for a newly made one and now that Felix is reuniting a sense of national identity was more important that ever.

"Mr. Lagos, I have a suggestion in regards to international sports tournaments." Enrique nods, "What's your suggestion?" Gary King walks around the office as he begins to divulge his idea, "I know entering a World Cup is out of the question, especially since the state of our national team is not where we want it and that we have no league to back up our NT." he pauses, "But we could submit a team to the Handball World Cup. Our nation is still ranked in the Top 10 in the world even after missing out on 3 World Cups! We can just send the best Handball players around the nation and we could label it something catchy to help in our efforts to reunite the country. Why depend on a football team that might or might not succeed? When we could have guaranteed success with Handball. Who knows, maybe in our return we could make a deep run in the World Cup. It's possible, you know."

Chancellor Lagos was intrigued by his colleague's idea. He could easily politicize Felix's resurgence into global sport and there's a realistic chance that Felix would actually do well in the Handball World Cup. Besides, Lagos always hated football, the sport bored him, even when they were successful and when Felix hosted the World Cup it led to break up to Felix. If anything, it is football's fault for ruining Felix and setting it back in the world stage. "I think that is a brilliant idea Gary. I will tell the Secretary of Sport and Culture to re-establish the Felixian Handball Association and submit an entry for the upcoming Handball World Cup.

Felix was going through some changes, joining the Esportivan Community, dropping football as a national sport, and continuing the effort to reunite the nation. Whether the changes will do good for the Felixian people will be seen.

Many weeks ago, the sport of handball had been merely unheard of in the Principality of Qasden. However, once the people first tried the sport, it became an instant hit across the Azeruian country. By the time the sport's popularity in the 'pality was sky-high, the newly-formed Qasden Handball Association had announced the country's participation in the upcoming seventeenth edition of the Handball World Cup, a Multiversal tournament whose trophy has been sitting in Costa de Ouro for the past 3 contests. Now, the Qads are looking to finally win some competition in Quebec, especially after some fails to win at IBC 21 & the Olympic Trials . Could this be the Vans' moment? Only one way to find out...in the arena.

Defensive Specialists:
GK: Aleixo Plácido Magalhães
GK: Casimiro Abreu

FR: Xavier Silva

Offensive Specialists:

RB: André Salomão Rodrigues
CB: Cristóvão Plácido Costa
LB: Lourenço Guerra
P: Cassandra Silvia Barros

Note that there is some flexibility between positions - Fonseca, Serafim, Garcia, and Silva, while nominally on the defensive end, have been known to score many goals for the Costenho teams. And Barros is perfectly capable of defending. Also, since the lineup can change so rapidly and there may not be opposing players of the same type (i.e. no right backcourt with a left backcourt), so many of the players are familiar with other positions as well.

Anticipated Lineups:
Starting Lineup: Magalhães - Garcia - Fonseca - Serafim - Costa - de Santigo - Barros
Defensive Lineup: Magalhães - Garcia - Silva - Fonseca - Serafim - Ferreira - Barros
Offensive Lineup: Magalhães - Fonseca - Serafim - de Santigo - Costa - Guerra - Barros
Offensive Lineup 2: Magalhães - Fonseca - Serafim - Fernandes - Rodrigues - Guerra - Barros

Rise from the Ashes.
Part I. Arrival.

There is a moment when the roses will sprout once again, and the stagnant river begins to flow. Yet, what is one supposed to do when faced with an atrocious situation – an opaque problem with no clear situation? What is one supposed to do when the depths of the ocean become unfathomable? There is only one thing to do when the valley cannot get any deeper. One must rise from the ashes of yesterday. One must believe because a way will be found if one believes.

When hope had seemed to disappear, the travelling and submerged people arrived onto a barren shore. As they rose to the surface and unseal the latches, they were welcomed with the lovely reflection that the moon created in the stillness of the water. Yet, they seemed to not be alone. The shadows past the beach reached into the sky. Due to the current reign of darkness, the people could not exactly infer what created such shadows. Some continued to stare into the darkness, which only seemed to grow more as time passed. Reluctantly, they entered back into the portable homes and rested for the remainder of the night.

At the break of dawn, the submerged people begun to step onto the sandy beach. The view before them, however, utterly disturbed them – the ruins of a city. The older ones of the group congregated on the beach in astonishment, while the younger ones enjoyed the coolness of the ocean. What was this place? What happened? Curiosity started to stir within them to a point of no return. The Team of Leaders divided the population into groups with distinctive tasks. This is what they had prepared for, yet nothing prepared them for what was to come. One group was given the task to gather food for the population because their current supply was running rather low. A second group was created to care for the children, while a third group was tasked with finding supplies for shelters. However, a fourth group was also created, with an extremely distinct job – explore the ruins of the city. All the groups dispersed to perform their designated job. The food gathers went fishing and walked up and down the beach. A small distance south of the landing area, they found a small forested area, where they collected berries and other plants. The ones in charge of the children stayed near the water, as the children were highly enjoying the steady waves of the ocean. The third group also found their way into the small forested area, where they mainly collected wood.

The fourth group had an interesting challenge. Street by street, house by house, and store by store, they searched. They received what they perceived. The partly shattered building, the shattered glass, the cracked pavement, the overgrown vegetation, and the abandoned belongings all led to one conclusion. Someone, or something, successfully ignited chaos into this city. It has to be enough turmoil to ultimately murder this city. But, the question that tormented the group still remained: where did everyone go?

By the time the sun begun to set, the people had explored the areas closest to the beach. They gathered a limited number of items, from house keys to clothes. Yet, none of these artifacts provided a foundation to conclude what had happened, or where everyone went. The explorers did concluded that the city housed people from various linguistics backgrounds due to the linguistic diverse signs in the city. As the people regrouped, the started to expose their discoveries. The group searching for food explained that they discovered a green, floating platform further down the shoreline.

The people sat on the sandy beach in awe, as the night sky was decorated with a full moon and many stars. They had deeply missed the stars, but that’s not what called for their attention. In a silent scream, the moon yearned for their sight. The sight of some people drifted downwards. Captivated, they were. They were captivated by the glorious reflection of the moon on the water. It was indescribable. It was breathtaking. It was perfect. Soon enough, people were no looking up at the radiant stars, but at the moon’s effects on the crystal waters of the sea. The sky-viewing came to an end, and they all went back into portable homes to sleep since their shelters were not ready yet.

Concerned. Frustrated. Worried. From being contained in their portable homes for much time, to being presented with the ruins of a city, the people were quite overwhelmed. Yet, they were persistent. The people continued with their tasks the next day. The group searching the city continued to progress westward into the city, or so that is what the compass stated.

As the explorer group continued to examine the ruins, everything seemed to get worse. The group did not need to enter some buildings, as a wall or two would be collapsed, or a hole would provide the view of the interior. They continued working inland, collecting artifacts that could help them make conclusions. By midday, they reached city central, or so the half-fallen sign claimed. Among the blemished building, only one stood preserved. It was the first building in the inner part of the city that was completely intact. They boldly approached the building, only to find that the glass door was locked. Their minds collected many ideas as they stood there - is there someone in there? Maybe a group of people? What should we do?

Smash! The glass shattered as a medium-sized brick deformed the door. Confused, they looked around. A quiet man in the back of group took responsibility for purposefully damaging the one of the few undisturbed structures of the city. They slowly stepped in, avoiding the sharp edges that had been created. They walked down the arched, golden hallway. At the end of the hallway, they encountered a balcony that overlooked the lobby. The small amount of the sun rays that entered the room through the circular window in the ceiling dimly lighted the lobby. The bit of light made the few decorations of the room visible.

They all gasped. The view flabbergasted and silence them. How were they going to explain this to the rest of the group?

Drawkland National Handball Team

With handball in very recent popularity in Drawkland, DISC decided to send in a team on a last-minute opening for the 17th edition. With a hastily thrown-together squad and being placed in the group with the hosts, it's expected to not do well. But hey, who knows?

Handball World Cup 17: West-East Timor in group H
The groups for the 17th Handball World Cup have been revealed. After the West-East Timorian National Handball Team under coach Sightor Ericsson have reached the quarter finals in the 16th Handball World Cup, which was the first international sports event ever a West-East Timorian team participated in, they are ranked 18th in the world, so they were in pot two. West-East Timor has been drawn in group H:

Image Abanhfleft
Image Castalena
Image Parah

At a press conference in the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, were the Handball World Cup will take place, Sightor Ericsson said:

"I think it should be possible, no, in fact we simply have to reach the next round, nothing else is acceptable. Castalena and Parah are playing their first World Cup, which means we really should be able to beat them. Abanhfleft, ranked fourth in the world, will be a bit harder, but let's see. Maybe we can win against then too. If we can't, being second in the group is enough to advance to the next round. When we've learned something the last world cup, it is that we may not underestimate any team. But on the other hand, the expectation in West-East Timor are much higher than last world cup. There we lost in the quarter finals, so our goal for this world cup should be to win the quarter finals and reach the semifinals."
If you want to do that, you can call us Omnidirectional Timor as well...

RP Note: Don't be fooled by the fact that out team consists of girls. St Trinians don't believe in rules, and will do anything, and I mean anything, to score goals. That may mean pushing over your best forward, or literally tearing your goalkeeper to shreds. I would expect any game involving them to include plenty of penalties and injuries. Of course, they give as good as they get, so feel free to injure them too.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
NATIONAL HANDBALL TEAM

This is the third or fourth time that Abanhfleft will be participating in an international handball tournament. Handball is quite an obscure sport in the Democratic Republic, with no professional league established, and the handball department in the Commission on Sports and Games is occupied only by two men working out of a plastic table. But no matter about its obscurity within the country itself. Handball has got a few lifelong and die-hard practitioners scattered throughout the country, and the Commission has managed to get hold of all fourteen of them, along with a handball coach to lead them, and they are now about to embark on a journey to claim some honor for both their sport and their country once again.

During the Games of the Aeropag 2110 Olympiad, Ndaku's handball team, men and women, demonstrated outstanding performance after maintaining winning streaks from the qualifying round to the main draws. The Ndakene Domestic and International Sports Association (NDISA) was then prompted and strongly encouraged to commence a handball premier league, and form a national team to play internationally for both sexes.

'Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.' (II Timothy 4:1-5 NKJV)

Decision Making - Part 1

Working the decision making and the anticipation of our students / athletes is a fundamental parameter for a teaching and learning quality process.
After the excessive concentration of time on the ball, the decisions are also being taken in the light of colleagues and opponents, in addition to maintaining the objectivity of scoring goals (and not conceding goals), allowing the first group of tactical decisions and collective in game situation are taken.
After entering this learning phase (which sets levels of access to the decentered game, structured and designed to stimulate decision-making and anticipation is essential, even in adulthood.
I would like to create a controlled situation in which an owner (the protagonist of the teaching-learning-training process), receiving the ball, may or may not deal with an onslaught of his direct marker, which is advised of the possibility of getting static defense or to conduct a deep battle the attacker receives the ball and must choose one of the given possibilities.
From this situation, the owner must choose two possibilities: If marker does not make a match, remaining static in defense, he must perform a pitch of 9 meters, because the second line of defense is vulnerable. If the marker does a fight in depth, up in the pursuit of body contact, the attacker must seek feint, because the first line of defense is exposed.
From this dichotomous relationship, one can explore the player's decision-making within a very controlled situation, it is possible to check, for example, if there is success or failure in planning (decision making) action and technical executions.
In this situation, an "situational game" which promotes the control of the situation in dichotomous relationships (that can be exploited in different situations, for example, with the pivot presence offering themselves or not, in 2 × 2 cases with fixing possibilities pair + crossing co-binder attacker or odd fixation + straight path of co-binder attacker and etc ..) the student will conceptually understand individual tactical elements crucial group for the collective construction of the handball game.
However, as we know, as has been discussed in previous texts, intelligence can be manifested in two basic ways, when we think about the game: the limited way the game (ie game context itself) and incidental to the game (or is, decontextualized form of the game itself).
Observing how they develop the "situational games", it is observed that the control made on the defense of the actions on the movement of the pivot, or even the attack mates or defense in relation to the protagonist of this process, this ends up facing situations require responses within very controlled variables (bit unpredictable), serving as a proposal for a game to introduce new concepts and develop ideas still while the level of knowledge (tending to a proposal to form circumscribed concepts to the game), which already bring possibilities of interacting with the game elements (receive balls, attacking space, seeking the best way to make goals and etc ..).
I consider, therefore, that this type of game is a hybrid between contextualizing and host of new concepts and usually consider it important to supplement explanations on whiteboards, clipboards and other forms of circumstantial presentation of game elements, it ends up being a game that cognitively work decisions, while still in a very simplified plan compared to the game itself.

Anglatian National Handball Team: The Crusaders

Handball is a sport mainly played in Valeria and Jugoskania, and is dominated in Anglatia by the Underfell Tempest, who have won the past three domestic championships. The sport is considered less 'manly' than football, however, and this has led to many of the best male athletes from Valeria choosing to play football, baseball, gridiron, or basketball instead. Part of the Emperor's sporting initiative was to increase the popularity of less notable sports, and the result was the creation of the Imperial Handball National Team, made up of the country's best players. All matches will be televised on major networks in an attempt to boost popularity, and some of the players have already received sponsor deals from various Anglatian corporations. Now the only thing left to do is meet the newfound expectations by putting up a decent performance against the best players from the rest of the world.

TEAM INFO:
Style: +3.5
Colors: Black and blue(the colors of Kaine-upon-Ross)
Stadium: Monarch Center at Underfell(12,000 capacity)
Fan Club: The Inquisition is the unofficial fan club of Anglatian handball, and they attend every match while wearing all red. They not only stand, sing, and jump for the entire game, but they also mercilessly taunt the opposition's stars. Their members have been known to dig deep into the past of opposition players looking for ammunition for insults, and the Underfell chapter of the group is known for rushing the floor and carrying off the trophy the last time the Tempest lost in a final.
Head Coach: To the massive annoyance of Tempest fans, Alessio Cederstrom of the Ross Foresters is the head coach. The 34 year old former player brought the Foresters from a worst place finish to a third place finish two seasons ago, and led them to a runner up finish last season. Cederstrom led handball to becoming respectable in Ross, and it's fitting that he becomes the first head coach of the national team.

"Well John I'd say we got pretty lucky in terms of the draw we get to avoid Red Blackiland and Quebec in the first round."

"I'd say you're right Frank but don't be fooled by rankings, Britonisea are traditionally a very strong team and even the unranked Cheongji has one of the most

"Well John our government has invested millions of dollars into the facilities for our players so I have complete confidence in them."

"Okay Frank but money only gets you so far, this game is about skill, and the question is does Northi Arabia have it?"
