No Place For Heroes, Part Fourteen

Al Jawal, Gharbambiyah

"INTERCEPTOR is on the ground," Gerry Anthony said on the radio. "Repeat, INTERCEPTOR is on the ground."

"Roger," Rysa Browne replied as she lifted off the Aerospatiale Alouette III helicopter that had transported the team of RBI "troubleshooters" into Al Jawal. "FIREFORCE is circling the objective and ready for fire support."

"Copy that," Gerry replied. He didn't look back at the helicopter as it lifted off away from them. Back when he was in the Army, Gerry had heard stories of soldiers who looked back at their chopper transports before going on a mission and ending up getting killed in the line of duty. Gerry wasn't a particularly superstitious man, and he was no longer in the Army, but he wasn't about to tempt fate right now just because.

Ellie Quest closed her eyes to protect them from the dust being blown up by the Alouette. She then followed the tall form of Gabriel de Galicia as they began walking through the streets of Al Jawal towards their objective, where they believed that the so-called "Emirate of Al Jawal" was holding Arby Balladur, son of General Rowan Balladur of WAMIGHA, hostage.

They walked past a row of identical-looking warehouses. The heat radiated from the galvanized iron sheeting tha made up the walls of the warehouses, nearly kniocking the wind out of Ellie. Soon, she felt like her nose and lungs were coated with a fine layer of sand.

"Holding up, Ellie?" Gab asked her.

"I'll be fine, Gab," Ellie replied. "I could be doing better, but I'm fine right now. Still, I'm British, so I'm definitely not used to this kind of heat."

"Usually, I'd say that you'll get used to it," Gab said, "but then again, you're British, like you said, so..."

Their walking slowed to a crawl as they got nearer to their objective, and then finally Gerry lifted up a closed fist just as they approached a small steel door that looked like many other steel doors in the area. The heat emanating from the steel walls felt like a thousand degrees, but nevertheless they went as close to it as they could. "Soft or loud?" Gab asked Gerry, referring to the method of entry.

"Go soft," Gerry said. Gab nodded and used hs left hand to reach for the doorknob, keeping his right hand on his rifle. He touched the knob gingerly, and then grunted in surprise when the door moved freely. "Unlocked," he said. "There might be an ambush waiting for us on the other side," he told the others.

"Keep your eyes and ears open," Gerry said. "If it comes down to that, we're going to have to fight our way out whether we like it or not."

Gab nodded, and then he raised his rifle to his shoulder and pushed the door open wide enough to let one man through one at a time. The others followed him into the warehouse when they didn't hear any kind of gunfire, either from Gab or aimed at him. The interior of the warehouse was huge, and the steel walls were keeping the heat as effectively as a brick oven or a greenhouse. Pallets holding whatever were scattered throughout the warehouse alongside a few shipping containers. Most of the pallets were under heavy tarps, but a few tarps on some pallets had slipped off or fallen away, revealing these pallets to be holding all kinds of foodstuffs and other relief goods. If the Emirate of Al Jawal was indeed the people who were occupying this warehouse, this was proof that they were running some kind of food-for-protection racket among the locals.

"How are we supposed to find Arby in all this junk?" Elizabeth Glenn asked.

"Elementary, my dear Lizzie," Gab replied. "Find him."

"Har, har, har, Gab," Lizzie shot back. "Very funny." The tone of her voice more than implied that no, she didn't actually find it that funny.

"Heads up," Gerry said. "Three tangos up ahead on the catwalk watching us." Ellie looked up and saw that there were indeed three men watching them from some kind of flimsy metal catwalk that looked like it could only support three men if those men were thin and malnourished. These men would hardly be seen as a threat were it not for the Kalashnikov rifles cradled in their arms and hands.

"Engage?" Gab asked.

"Negative," Gerry replied. "Unless they're firing at us, they're not our concern just yet. Our main objective is still finding Arby. But if you see them making any funny moves, you're cleared to fire."

"Cover?" Lizzie asked.

"Might as well," Gerry said. "God knows we're exposed right where we are."

Ellie lowered her gaze from the three men watching them from the catwalk and back to ground level. That was when she noticed more men with Kalashnikovs running in from the side of the warehouse. They were a mix of Africans, Arabs, and Whites, and they were carrying along with their rifles a handful of machetes. "Guys, up front," she called out.

"Shit," Gerry muttered. "Weapons free!" The warehouse then rang with the deafening sound of rapid and automatic gunfire as both sides opened fire on each other. Bullets struck the pallets and the shipping containers, ricocheting off in all directions. The four members of the extraction team: Gerry, Gab, Ellie, and Lizzie, all returned fire from different places in the warehouse. But even as she fired at the enemy, Ellie shivered at the sudden feeling of dread that washed over her. She had been in her fair share of firefights before as part of Gerry Anthony's special deniable operations unit of Abanhfleft's Republican Bureau of Investigation, but once again she felt herself mortal and vulnerable.

"Ellie, what's the problem?" Gerry asked. "Get those sons of bitches!"

Ellie Quest took a deep breath to push aside the fear beginning to tickle the back of her mind and brought herself back to the present. She let that breath out in a slow sigh and began selecting targets for her to open fire, and she began squeezing off measured bursts of gunfire from her Galil rifle.

"Shoot back!" Gerry shouted. "Shoot! Shoot!'

Every time Ellie popped out of cover to fire at the enemy, she felt as if her cover was going to disintegrate any minute now as literally thousands of bullets went into the food parcels behind which she was hiding. The air now began to reek of cordite and hot brass from all the gunpowder and ammo being expended in the fight. "Move, move, move!" Gerry called out. "Move before they trap us in here!" He stood up from his cover and ran towards the nearest shipping container on the way back to where they had come from. Bullets whizzed past him and caused little clouds of dirt to rise up behind him where the rounds impacted the sandy soil.

"Ellie, move up," Gab said. "I'll cover you." The older man poured fire into a pocket of heavy enemy resistance where a lot of the myriad rounds aimed at them were coming from. Ellie nodded her head and then ran for the nearest pallet of food parcels, which was quickly shredded by gunfire. Gab emptied the magazine of his M4A1 carbine and reloaded. "All right, Ellie, now cover me!" he shouted. Ellie lifted her Galil up to her shoulder and fired at the enemy while Gab ran towards her. A rebel with a Kalashnikov and a machete on his back fell back under Ellie's onslaught, leading Gab to comment, "Nice shooting, Tex."

Ellie chanced another look from behind her pallet and saw another African man running towards her with his machete raised high in the air. She lined him up in her sights and fired a three-round burst. A large red hole appeared in the man's chest, and blood spread from the hole like a grotesque flower going to full bloom.

"Ellie!" Gerry called out. "Don't just stand there, get moving!"

Ellie looked around and saw that she was now alone in her spot in the warehouse. The others had run back to the door where they had come in, and they were still firing at the rebels who were pouring into the warehouse in endless waves, waiting for Ellie to make her move. Ellie shook her head and ran towards the others, but just as she was just a few paces away from them, she saw a round object land in front of her. Even as Ellie recognized the object, Gerry shouted, "Grenade!" Ellie made to jump backwards, and just as she did so, the grenade went off.

There was a bright flash of light and heat, and lots of shrapnel were flying through the air. Ellie landed on her bottom rather than on her side as she had planned, and her ears rang from the close proximity of the detonation. But even as the ringing in her ears subsided, Ellie heard a primal yell emanating from the bowels of the warehouse. It was a scream that had probably never been heard since the dawn of mankind. Ellie looked up and saw another black man running towards her with his machete raised. He was the source of the screaming.

In the few microseconds in which Ellen Quest processed these thoughts, the man was closing the distance between him and her as fast as his stick-thin legs would allow him. But just as the rebel prepared to swing down the machete onto Ellie's exposed neck, he stumbled, and his scream became choked as he struggled for air. He faltered in his steps, and then his body clattered hard on the sandy floor of the warehouse, his machete landing harmlessly on the soil just beside Ellie.

Ellie looked around for her savior and saw Gabriel de Galicia standing over her. In his right hand was a Colt Python with a smoking barrel.

"Just in the nick of time, Gab!" Ellie managed to say.

"Don't thank me yet," Gab said as he helped Ellie stand up. "We're not out of the woods yet."

There was no more resistance from the rebels as Gab and Ellie made their way back to the door where they had entered the warehouse an eternity ago. Gerry and Lizzie were already waiting for them outside the warehouse, and just as Gab and Ellie made it out, they heard Gerry saying on the radio, "I don't know if this was a trap or we were just unlucky, but there was no Arby there, just rebels. We need evac ASAP. How soon can you land?"

"Not anytime soon, INTERCEPTOR," Rysa Browne replied from the Alouette. "I'm looking at you and the LZ and I can see a lot of friends are coming out and waiting for you."

"Well, that's just great," Gerry muttered. "FIREFORCE, are you ready for fire support mission?"

"Just give us the go-ahead and point us to the bad guys, INTERCEPTOR," Rysa replied.

"Copy!" Gerry shouted. He then turned to the others on the ground and asked them, "Are you ready to slog it out?"

"Hell, no, Gerry!" Gab replied. "We're not trained for this!"

"Well, too bad! We're gonna do it anyway!"

"If I die, Gerry, I want you to survive so you can lower me to my grave and let me down one last time!"

"And the same to you, Gab! Let's move out!"

I coughed and sprayed a cloud of white powder infused with blood before me. I cannot tell where the hangover ends and the concussion begins. It is the dying minutes of fourth quarter, unless the decayed analogue clock before me is but another hallucination.

My mother always said I was allergic to good ideas.

In need of a way to barter for travel to our next match whilst R.P.S Dirty Dog was undergoing repairs, I had turned to Strom.

Strom had a cousin, a second cousin, a black sheep.

All I had to do was swallow the three condoms of goods and we could flip them upon arrival in HUElavia.

I shouldn't have swallowed them before the game. Kenny had stopped my blitz, hard, and must have burst one.

I could feel the ketamine kicking in.

Maybe it was two.

The Bastards found themselves holding a 3-0 lead over the Leviathans in the 4th quarter, but after their captain/quarterback/linebacker/kicker was ejected from the game, reigning champions Schottia managed to drive through for a touchdown to clinch their first win of this World Bowl. The Bastards are still without any points--"

The normally sedate Barunian attack came awake with a roar last night, tearing apart San Jose Guayabal in a dominant display that ended in a 47-6 rout.

Ryan Dunne threw four touch down passes, while Simon Nobel and Josh Bell both ran in touchdowns. Victor Hall scored for the defence, picking six off an interception. Bill Holman added two field goals to finish the total. The team went for two on the last TD, a thirty yard pass from Dunne to Schwedler. That run was not successful, but the failure was a moot point, as Barunia were already 41 points ahead.

The win gives Barunia a good chance of qualifying. Equestrian States and San Jose Guayabal are the only other teams in the group who have attained a rank. Victory over Cuatro, West Phonecia, and Texasa would put Barunia in a strong position at the middle of qualifying.

Barunia's next game is against Cuatro at home. The team would like to invite everyone to come down to Hedley Thayer oval and find out what gridiron is all about.

Paladins bounce back from rough start, win 30-7 in second game

Aprilian Times -- In the second game of the World Bowl, The Paldins faced off against Shytysle -- Ranked 41 -- defeating them 30-7. Many fans and others were shocked to see how well The Paladins played considering how bad they were in the last game the Frenline Delpha Anacondas. Not much was expected even after the changes Coach Tony Agresta made after the dismal performance last game, but those changes obviously made a difference. Matt Whelan was put under center and would lead his team to victory passing for 243 yards on 21-30 passing, 2 TD, 0 Interceptions. This was thanks in large part to the offensive line holding up any defenders trying to rush the quarterback with Wesley Brown replacing Nick Keiffer in the Left Tackle spot. Also because the offensive line did well Miguel Black did better than ever hitting all the open gaps. Miguel Black rushed for 112 yards on 23 carries, 0 fumbles, 2 TD.

The real stars of the show were the Defense holding Shytysle to only a TD early in the First Quarter and not letting them score again the rest of the game. The Defense as a whole recorded 3 Sacks, 2 tackles for a loss when the running back had the ball, 4 Deflections, and 2 Interceptions that both led to Touchdowns. Later near the end of the Fourth Quarter they even caused a safety adding two more points on the board. By this time Shytysle's offense had probably given up and were tired so it's understandable why the safety happened. However this performance by the defense shows that its secondary is alive and that the run defense is still strong. Of course if changes were not made to the defense such as switching from a 5-3 front to a 3-4 front they may have not performed as well.

After the game Coach Agresta said he was pleased with the offense and how well led it was by Matt Whelan and also how well the plays called by The offensive coordinator Bailey Choppin were executed. The defensive coordinator Coach Mark Robert said the secondary practiced a lot do they wouldn't get lit up again and was proud of their effort.

Around the rest of Group A, the other unranked team, Mareut, faced off in a heated and close match against United States of Devonta. Mareut could not hold on however and fell 7-3. In the other matchup, The Anacondas faced off against the number 3 ranked team, Allamunic States, and were blown away 3-18. The next match for The Paladins will be against Allamunic States.

In the locker room the players all celebrated giving each other high fives and dancind around the locker room. Coach Agresta came in and said, "I'm proud of you guys, I'm proud that the offense executed every play nearly perfect, I'm proud of the secondary stepping up and giving all the fans at home hope in this team, I'm just proud you did it against a very offensive heavy team. Now Matt Whelan come here."

Matt whelan walked up to him and asked, "Sir?"

"Ya know Big Red I don't know why I didn't start you the first game but I certainly do know that you will start the next game."

"Thank you Coach."

"No problem kid. Now everyone listen up! Our next opponent is Allamunic states, the number 3 ranked team and 6 time world champs. Of course we are favored to lose the game and I'm fine with that its to be expected against such a talent and experience filled team. However I like the underdogs in most matchups because a lot of the time they provide games no one ever expects no one ever thinks it was a non-entertaining game. And ya know that sometimes the underdog becomes the big dog when it wins. I want you guys to feel that I want you guys to win and give it your all so don't hold back against them or else you will be crushed just like we were in the first game!"

Daniel Hickey spoke up and said, "you really think we can do it coach?"

"If you have a winning attitude and think you can then you most certainly can. I have faith in you guys to come in with the right mindset next game. Now that's all, if you have any questions about our strategy come to me and don't be afraid of asking because you don't know. The only stupid question that exists is the one you don't ask! Also we will be changing to a 4-3 front so as to stop the run better and still be able to defend passes. Palencia you will still be in but herrington will be added to the defensive line and Mark Rey we are going to take you out from the linebackers and be with us on the sidelines. You are now Dismissed!"

I wake in the burnt ruins of a HUElavian waffle house, a phoenix rising from ashes of batter.

My memory, ever the unreliable tool, ends at the final whistle as the throng of Bastard fans flood the pitch and chant and cheer.

16-3

I like to believe the waffle house was a ruin before we arrived, but false beliefs are dangerous things that ruin many a man.

Slapping the bruised faces of my slumbering cohorts, I hop and I shuffle through the corpse of the memories of breakfast past. This is not my first tango in a decrepit building and I do not want to see the ceiling cave in on us, an unfitting end for us bastards.

Besides, we are to undertake a journey, forge a path to the Republic of Arkan.

Once we are gathered outside, hangovers and HUElavian groupies in tow, I ask Selso for a phone.

It is not his phone, it never is.

I flip it open and open the camera and Selso opens the gates of his personal hell. A nights worth of alcohol and protein flows free in gaseous form, the fart is the final straw and the now empty ruin of waffle house heaven collapses, exhausted from the partying and claiming it's well deserved rest.

There is beauty in the destruction. I find myself inspired.

I turn back to the camera app and speak.

The video ends.

The Iron Legion, Part 3

As Randy Head was being carried on his teammates' shoulders at the end of the game against the Dragons of Cosumar, he looked at the scoreboard once more. COSUMAR 17: 19 CHROMATIKA it read, which made him smile; then, he saw this: COSUMAR 2:2 CHROMATIKA, COSUMAR 3:2 CHROMATIKA PK, AOCAF RO16. This made him frown. He had a few friends on the National Football Team - namely, Erika Morningstar. Making a mental note to message or call her later, he continued to celebrate with his teammates, for it had been just that, a real team win.

The hero of the match, for sure, was Earl Bass. He had pressured Jeston Boulware on more than one occasion throughout the game, ending up with one interception, two deflection, two sacks, and five tackles. It was as complete of a performance as a defensive player could ever hope for. Griffith, Hernandez, Pena, and Diaz had helped the cause as well, and although they did give up a total of seventeen points this day, The Legion's defense proved that it could hold its own against some of the best in the world.

The Dragons' touchdowns had come off of simple plays - a play-action toss to Sid Vinceant to the back left corner of the end zone, and a run right up the gut by Neptune Trevorrow. They had taken a 14:0 lead early in the second quarter, as The Iron Legion's offense had struggled to begin the game.

After the halftime speech, however, Mercado started hitting his passes against the secondary of the Dragons. As expected, McDonald didn't have a good game against the Dragons' linebacking corps. So, Derrick Wiley and his friends started to take over. A thirty-four yard pass to Wiley put the Anomalies on board, and then Head started to do his thing, scoring two field goals, one in the end of the third and one in the beginning of the fourth quarter.

That was when the Dragons' defense started to hold again, setting up the drama with two minutes left in the game. Mercado scrambled for a first down, tossed to Frye, tossed to McDonald, and then finally found Wiley at the twenty-four yard line with fifteen second remaining. Head was true with his kick, and The Iron Legion were somehow 3-0, having defeated the two favorites in the group already. Two more unranked teams are what's next for The Iron Legion, meaning that if they don't slip up, they might have a 5-0 record at the halfway mark.

World Bowl XXIX

Abaja loses first game 20-3

- By Amina Ogwu and Matthew Teyare 4:06 P.M

Taeshan 20 - 3 Abaja

The Lions went against Taeshan and experienced their first loss of the tournament. The Abajan coach, Josi Tueyuté, looked very frustrated. "They looked so lazy out there! I cannot believe how careless they played on offense! Remember yesterday when I said that our defense wouldn't be on point every game? This is exactly what I'm talking about! Our defense had much problem against this team, and the offense couldn't even try to get back in the game! The offense always wants to rely on the defense! If fact, I think I know what do with these QB's, WR's RB's, and other positions on offense." He then angrily stormed out the press conference and told his entire offensive players to run around the football field until they are out of breath - literally out of breath. In the first quarter, Taeshan got into a hot start, going all the way to the Lions' 20 yard line within 3 minutes. Then, the Taeshan QB threw a 20 yard touchdown pass to his Wide Receiver. Abaja did not respond, and had to punt the ball. 2 minutes left in the first quarter, Taeshan was in Lions' territory, at the 28 yard line, but their kicker missed the field goal as it was far right. In the second quarter, Desna Osopno (QB) threw a 26 yard pass to Yurena Joku (TE). A few plays later, Desna Osopno (QB) threw an interception, which resulted in a TD. The head coach was very upset. When Abaja got the ball back, a flawed snap by the Lions' C caused a sack loss of 15 yards. With 10 seconds left in the second quarter, Desna Osopno (QB) threw a Hail Mary from their own 16 yard line. That pass was intercepted. Desna Osopno yelled at Bobby Odendé (WR) for not catching the ball, as it headed right to him, but the Teashan CB got front and picked it off.

Halftime came, and the Lions were down 0-14. The Abajan crowd was silent. The Taeshan crowd was pumped up. In the third quarter, Taeshan got the ball. The Taeshan QB passed the his favorite WR for 21 yards, then their HB ran for another 16. During a passing play for Taeshan, Guinior Lukenta (DT) twisted his ankle on someone's leg trying to get a sack. It was a Grade one ankle sprain and he is ruled out for 10-12 days. After Taeshan failing to score points that drive, they had to punt. Vincent Oleamu (HB) ran for 11 yards on the Lions' first play of the second half. Denny Sofoje (WR) caught a pass from Desna Osopno for 52 yards. They Lions were soon at the Taeshan 10 yard line, but failed to score after Osopno got sacked on 3rd and 4. They had to settle for a field goal. The score was now 14-3. Taeshan responded with a field goal of their own, after a 62 yard drive. Score was now 17-3. In the fourth quarter, the Abajan offense basically gave up. They couldn't even get out of their own territory so all they did was punt, punt, and punt.... With 2 minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Lions were on their own 15 yard line. Desna Osopno (QB) threw a deep pass to Denny Sofoje (WR), but that was intercepted as well. The Tashan CB ran it all the way to the Lions' 9 yard line. Taeshan couldn't score a touchdown, so they settled for a field goal, which made it 20-3. The game ended. Desna Osopno (QB) finished 17 for 33 passing, 248 yards, and 3 interceptions. His rating was a 37.7. "Such a horrid game. I can't believe Abaja played this bad! Oh well. Hopefully we'll get it next game." Says an Eagle's fan.

The Vietussian Inquisitor

Bombs outside football stadium after World Bowl game invokes tragedy

Tragedy struck earlier today when 5 terrorists planted 3 bombs near the most populated gates of a Vietussian football stadium in Hankow, detonating them via suicide belt as fans exited the stadium. An estimated 350 died with 600+ injured.

No member or personnel of the Vietussian football was injured as the team left after the bombs with police and SVAT (Special Vietussian Assault Team) escort. The team mourned the deaths of friends and family on the plane, some breaking out in racking sobs.

The team will take one day of mourning before practicing and setting up for the next group match. Critics wonder if the day off will help or hurt the team in their overall ability to play Sunday night. Some argue it will stiffen the team, while others argue it will loosen the team and fully allow them to get the negative emotion out.

The next game will no doubt be in memory of those affected by the bombs in Hankow. The team will likely played with renewed energy.

Until then, this is Jeb Ports, signing off early to mourn.

ETID - Part Two

"Yeah, I have some regrets. I regret that I'll never know the feeling of winning on the road in Batavia like so many great Illara West quarterbacks have done in the past, never winning a college championship, declining a World Bowl call up in the past to join the Air Forces. But I'm focused on the present. I'm finally over my injuries and it's a new start for all of us, here in Anglatia. We still have the same chip on our shoulder and we want to show the rest of the world that we still aren't an easy to write off team." - Cara Devlin during an interview with Greater Anglatia Sports Network.

Anglatia showed up in a big way in their second game, and for the second time in her career, Cara Devlin torched a team from the Free Republics. In a game reminiscent of Armeia vs the Free Republics two World Bowls ago, when Cara Devlin scored the winning touchdown by a trick play pass from one of the cornerbacks, she led the team with three touchdowns in the second half to secure a 24-3 win. The first two touchdowns were both long balls down the sideline to Zero Davidovic, but the third was more impressive, one where Devlin spun out of a tackle and stepped up in the pocket before tucking the ball and running ten yards downfield, trucking a linebacker to get into the endzone and score.

Devlin's shoulder has been a major problem throughout her career, making her miss her only year in college in addition to part of the one World Bowl that she played in for Armeia and almost all of her senior season in high school, but it appeared to be fine even as she took multiple big hits while scrambling. Despite not getting on the scoreboard, Storm Staford had a pretty solid game, too. He broke several tackles for first downs, taking advantage of the two offensive tackles who are growing to become stars on offense.

There was one notable player missing, however. Trista Prust. The vocal leader of the secondary and the defense as a whole had fallen to the same fate of most other female players in Armeian and now Anglatian football: Injury. She missed the Falatulu game and the Ethane game with an unknown injury sustained in practice, which is believed to be the same injury that sidelined her in many of her past World Bowl games. The exact nature of the injury wasn't disclosed, but many speculate that it was a long term condition, maybe something to do with blood clotting or chronic pain in a certain joint. Of course, her teammates knew the full truth, and that was why two of them were visiting her at her hotel room to try to convince her to sit out the rest of the tournament.

"Look, Tris. You know that everyone on this team wants the best for you. And you know that despite us playing for archrival schools in college, I want nothing but the best for you also," said Taesha, standing next to Ty Leroux and speaking to Trista, who was stuck in bed watching TV, because of the pain in her thigh. "And because of that, I have to tell you some things that you don't want to hear."

"Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know. You want me to quit playing. Anything new?" asked Trista, rolling her eyes and keeping her defiant attitude even in pain.

"We're asking you to protect yourself," Ty replied. "You're from Scarborough, a football crazy place... You of all people should remember that girl who dropped dead at a Southeastern training session because of the same condition that you have. We don't want the same thing to happen to you."

"I know. But I have to take these risks. I don't just want to be another female football player who had her career ended by injury. I don't want to be another Mia Perrera, no offense to her. And I don't want to be another megastar from Illara West to wash out as a pro," sighed Trista. "This is just a little pain. Pain is temporary. I can get through it, and at least finish the tournament."

Taesha rolled her eyes, folding her arms and leaning against the door. She brushed her dreads out of her face, frowning. "You say you can get through it, but you literally can't get out of bed right now. It's alright to drop the tough girl persona sometimes, you know."

"Wait, what? That's rich coming from you. I'm not the one who wears black contacts during the games and wears multi colored war paint instead of normal eye black. You're telling me that I'm the one who needs to drop the tough persona? Someone has to lead the team, and as defensive captain, that job falls on my shoulders. At least until I train Rory to be a decent captain."

"You can't be captain if-"

"Shut up, Tae. There's no way you're convincing me to quit the team. I'm playing as soon as the pain goes down enough, and I'm going to keep pressing forward... Even if it kills me," sighed Trista, and with that, she waved for the two others to leave, ignoring the distressed looks on their faces. Only time could tell if she made the right decision.

Part One Part Two Part Three Part Four Part Five Part Six Part Seven Part Eight Part Nine Part Ten Part Eleven Part Twelve Part Thirteen Part Fourteen

No Place For Heroes, Part Fifteen

Al Jawal, Gharbambiyah

Four against eleventy billion. That's what Gerry Anthony of his situation right now. He should have seen it from the start. There was no way that the so-called Emirate of Al Jawal would leave their most valuable hostage just lying around in a place where World Assembly peacekeepers could get to him quickly. It had to be an ambush, had to be. There was no other explanation for it. Either someone must have known that the WA had sanctioned a rescue mission for Arby Balladur, or the so-called Emirate's leader, Edward Eskalumbuye, was just that paranoid.

Either way, Gerry and his team were going to die in this sandy hellhole if they couldn't fight their way out of the heart of the Emirate's controlled territory.

"FIREFORCE, how much longer 'til fire support is ready?" he asked on the radio mounted on the strap of his ballistic vest.

"Just a few more seconds and we'll be ready," Rysa Browne, pilot of the Aerospatiale Alouette III helicopter that had brought him and his three fellow agents of the Republican Bureau of Investigation to Al Jawal. "The guns are taking their sweet time to warm up."

"But can we use the camera?"

"Yeah, you can. Just don't set targets yet or else you'll screw up the start-up, or at least that's what Denny says." Dennis "Denny" Messi was the technological expert of Gerry Anthony's team, and Gerry himself liked to call him his "resident combat hacker". It was Denny who had installed the new targeting hardware and software into the Alouette that would turn it into a capable fire support gunship.

Gerry nodded his head, even though he knew that Rysa wouldn't be able to see him since she was up in the sky flying the Alouette, and took out a tablet computer from a pocket in his vest. He turned it on, waited it to sync with the camera mounted on the nose of the Alouette, and then he watched as grainy color footage of the area above which the helicopter was flying was transmitted back to the tablet.

Gerry didn't like what he saw. What looked like ants on the screen of the tablet were actually members of the numerous militias fighting under the banner of the Emirate of Al Jawal. Eleventy billion rebels had been a bit on the high side for Gerry, but he knew for sure that there were at least dozens of rebels waiting for them between their current hiding place and the primary landing zone where they would be picked up by FIREFORCE the Alouette.

"What;s the ground situation, Ger?" Gabriel de Galicia asked him. Gab was on point, watching the path where they had just come from in case some rebels tried to get the jump on them from there.

"Honestly or sugarcoated?" Gerry asked. "We're in very, very deep shit right now, Gab. It looks like Eddie Eskalumbuye's mobilizing his entire army just to kill the four of us."

"I don't know if I should take that as a compliment or what," Gab said. When Gerry looked at him, he added, "I mean, he thinks that he's gonna need every man he's got just to kill the four of us. Must mean we've got a bit of a reputation out here, you know?"

Gerry pondered Gab's words and then shook his head. "All right, gang, let's get ourselves set up," he said. "Gab, I don't think anybody's gonna surprise us from behind right now so you can get on over to the other side of the street."

"Got that," Gab said as he stood up and ran for the wall separating two houses on the other side of the street from where they had been hiding.

"Ellie, Lizzie, there's a rusted car down the middle of the street over there," Gerry said, pointing to the wreck in question. "There's bits of rubble and cars up ahead once we start moving forward, so always keep an eye on those places, okay?"

"If you say so," Ellie Quest said before she and Lizzie Glenn ran for the wrecked car.

"FIREFORCE is ready for targets, INTERCEPTOR," Rysa called out.

"Copy," Gerry said. "Stand by for supporting fire." He looked at the tablet's screen once again, counting the rebels up ahead, and then he tapped his finger on the rebels that he could see on the screen. Small red boxes appeared on the screen over the heads and bodies of the rebels that could be seen.

Up in the Alouette, there was a similar tablet computer mounted just between the pilot and the copilot of the craft which showed the same images and the same red boxes on the visible rebels. Alvin Lopez, the Filipino pilot who was sitting in the right seat of the Alouette, looked at the tablet then at Rysa, who was in the captain's customary left seat, and said, "Your tech guy knows his stuff, no?" He then noticed a rebel who wasn't marked with a red box, and he tapped the screen, and the red box appeared on the rebel. "Amazing," he muttered. "It even updates from here, too."

"What can I say?" Rysa said to Alvin. "He knows what he's doing."

"FIREFORCE, if you could make a pass on these guys, that would be great," Gerry called out through the radio.

"Copy that, INTERCEPTOR," Rysa replied. "We're going in."

The Alouette turned towards the line of rebels that were preparing to move forward against the RBI team. As the helicopter lined up with the column of men, the end caps on what had appeared to be fuel pods mounted on the sides of the chopper dropped open, revealing four machine gun barrels. This was a modification dating back to when Fernando Tarrasco first acquired the Alouette for his "organization", but it had been further modified with the addition of electronic fire control systems by Denny Messi.

The machine guns spat out lead at a ferocious rate onto the rebel column. At least a dozen rebels fell before they realized that they were being massacred from above. A few brave rebels aimed their rifles at the sky and at the chopper, but they were swiftly cut down by the machine guns for their trouble. In the cabin of the Alouette, Fabio Marquez, who was the regular copilot of the chopper but gave way for Rysa Browne, added to the mix gunfire from the squad automatic weapon mounted on the floor of the cabin.

"Move up!" Gerry Anthony shouted, and he and the other members of his team moved forward out of their respective covers and began advancing towards the rebels' position and closer to their primary LZ. Those rebels that the Alouette weren't able to take down were shot by the agents.

"FIREFORCE circling around for another pass," Rysa said on the radio. As if on cue, the RBI agents went into the nearest available cover and reloaded their weapons. Gerry took out the tablet once again and began marking more targets for the chopper to attack. He popped out of his cover and fired a few shots downrange, and he saw a rebel fall down to the ground before he retreated his head under a barrage of enemy gunfire.

"FIREFORCE ready for fire support."

"Targets are marked, FIREFORCE," Gerry called out. "You know what to do!"

Once again, the air was filled with the barking noise of machine guns spitting lead at the enemy. More rebels fell under the onslaught, but it seemed as if there was an endless supply of them, and like the hydra of myth, the more rebels they killed, the more rebels came out to attack them.

"They're everywhere, Gerry!" Ellie Quest shouted from the overturned car behind which she was hiding. "We can't keep fighting them like this forever!"

"Tell me something I don't know!" Gerry shouted back. "But don't worry! The LZ's just behind that building!"

With their ammo running low, the agents had to conserve it and not spray and pray. It was a hard task, what with the number of enemies against them, but eventually they made it back to the place where they had disembarked from the Alouette. There was just one difference between that time and right now, and that was the number of rebels swarming the flat patch of sand.

"Are you fucking kidding me?" Gerry asked no one in particular. "FIREFORCE, can you see the situation on the primary LZ?"

"Yeah, I see it, INTERCEPTOR," Rysa said. "We've only got one pass left in our guns, and I don't think that's enough to clear them out."

"Then don't fuck about with this place anymore and get to the secondary!" Then, to his team, Gerry said, "Fall back! We're going to the secondary LZ! We've got too many bogeys here to get out!"

Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit! Gerry repeated in his mind. Whoever fed him that intel that led him to that warehouse in Al Jawal in going to get fragged, he promised himself.

The secondary LZ was on top of some kind of condominium tower that was under construction, or at least it had been under construction before Isaiah Cabulovowino took over Gharbambiyah and caused Edward Eskalumbuye to declare his "Emirate of Al Jawal", which led to the construction company fleeing Al Jawal and leaving the condo unfinished. There was a large, flat space on what would've been the roof of the condo, and right now the only objects there were sacks of cement and cinder blocks. There were also a few militiamen and rebels who had camped out inside the structure, but they had been cleared out by Gerry Anthony and his team quickly. Just as the four of them got on the top floor, a new voice entered their comms system. It was Dennis Messi.

"Guys, I've got a weather advisory for you," he said. "There's a sandstorm coming up to Al Jawal within the hour. I suggest that you all get out of there before it hits, or else you're all gonna have a bad time."

"Bad luck does come in threes," Gerry said. Then, to Rysa, he said, "We're at the secondary LZ, FIREFORCE. Can you make one more pass to clear out the stragglers before going in?"

"At your signal, INTERCEPTOR," Rysa replied. She waited as the tablet in the cockpit of the Alouette filled up with red boxes, and then she and Alvin Lopez turned the helicopter around towards the remaining rebels around the area of the condo. The air was once again filled with the sound of machine guns spitting out hundreds of rounds per second, and those rebels unlucky enough to be in the path of those bullets flopped around like string puppets.

Fabio Marquez was at the mounted machine gun when he noticed a trail of white smoke coming from one of the rooftops surrounding the secondary LZ. He barely had enough time to recognize why there was smoke when the rocket-propelled grenade smashed into the tail rotor of the Alouette. With the loss of the tail rotor, the chopper began to spin around along with the main rotor. There was little, if any warning; just a puff of smoke, an explosion, and now everything was going to hell.

"Oh, hell, no," Gerry Anthony muttered as he watched the Alouette get hit by a rebel RPG, and he was powerless as the helicopter struggled to maintain lift and forward momentum.

"Uh, Gerry?" Ellie asked. "I think they're headed our way."

Gerry blinked. Indeed, it looked as if the damaged Alouette was indeed headed for their rooftop. But there was no way that it would be able to land safely, not in the condition it was in right now. Gerry looked around for any quick ways out of the rooftop, but there was nothing except for some rope that would have been used to bring stuff up and down the side of the site. With the doomed Alouette rapidly approaching them, Gerry shouted, "Jump!" He didn't even wait to see if the others had followed him as he grabbed the rope and slid down. Above him, he heard the loud crash of metal on concrete, and he looked up to see the Alouette smack its belly on the roof before continuing on its downward trajectory.

"Everybody okay?" Gerry asked.

"I'm fine," Ellie called out.

"Never better," Gab said.

"I'm good," Lizzie added.

"FIREFORCE, can you hear me?" Gerry called on the radio.

There was a burst of static before a female voice came through. "I'm here, Gerry," Rysa said through a fit of coughing. "I don't know where we are, but we're probably right in the middle of Al Jawal. We're gonna need some help getting out of here!"

"Don't worry about that; we'll get you out of there," Gerry replied. "What about Alvin and Fabio?"

"Alvin's out cold. Fabio's keeping watch at the moment, but he's bleeding from the head."

"All right, we'll try to get there ASAP." Gerry then switched frequencies and asked, "Denny, can you track down Rysa for me?"

"Yeah, I saw what happened, Gerry," Dennis Messi said in reply to Gerry's question. "Just one sec... I got her. She's somewhere near the Ilham Mosque. It's the big white mosque in the center of town. You can't miss it."

"Got that, Denny," Gerry said. "Thanks for the help."

"Oh, and Gerry? The sandstorm's gonna come down in thirty minutes. You're gonna cut it very, very close."

"Fuck the sandstorm, Denny!" Gerry said. "Rysa's out there with an unconscious pilot and a bleeding gunner! The enemy could be onto them already! We're gonna do what it takes to get them all back, and if we have to go through a sandstorm to get them, then we'll fucking do it!"

"I know what you're talking about, Gerry. I'm just here to remind you that as soon as that sandstorm hits, you're all gonna be on your own."

"We'll cross that bridge when we get there," Gerry said before shutting off the radio. He then turned to his team and said, "Right now, we've got Rysa and our Filipino pilot friends somewhere near the big mosque. I don't know long they're gonna be there, but we will sure as hell get them out. There's a sandstorm coming, and that's both good news and bad for us. We've still got some ammo left, and we're gonna do what it takes to get our friends back. On me."

Phoenix can take stranglehold on Group F with win over Schottia

Kaboomlandia, ranked 3-0 in the world, can take a stranglehold on Group F in the first half of the tournament. And we're only three games in.
Group F Pld W L PF PA PD
1 Kaboomlandia 3 3 0 67 13 +54
2 HUElavia 3 2 1 36 39 −3
3 Schottia 3 2 1 37 19 +18
4 Rennidan 3 1 2 22 23 −1
5 The Republic of Arkan 3 1 2 23 40 −17
6 Vrai 3 0 3 6 57 −51

As you can see, Kaboomlandia is currently the only undefeated team left in the group, at 3-0. HUElavia and Schottia - the Phoenix' next two games, incidentally - take up the other two teams with winning records. Rennidan has underachieved with a 1-2 record, but did defeat equally ranked HUElavia 16-3 last night.

If Kaboomlandia defeats Schottia tonight, they will be able to extend their death grip on first place in the group with a 4-0 record going into their game against HUElavia. When Head Coach Kevin Nivek was asked about this, he replied that the team simply went into every game as if it was a single game, not taking into account the other games. The strategy has worked so far, but Schottia will be a very strong team to look out for.

Ferocious Defense leads Banija to 3-0 start at the 29th World Bowl

Image
Defensive End Momir Litvinov celebrates a sack in Banija's home victory against the Unified Isles

By The Numbers
Turnover Margin: +7 (8 to 1)
Total Defense: 190 yards per game
Scoring Defense: 2.33 points per game(including 2 shutouts)
Rushing Defense: 77 yards per game
Passing Defense: 115 yards per game
Total Sacks: 11 sacks(10 from the defensive line)

BUSUKUMA- Banijan fans, going into the 29th World Bowl, knew that the strength of this team would be their defense going into the World Bowl. The old adage being true, which is "defense wins championships", and the Banijans were loaded on the defensive side of the ball. Of course, the Banijan defense would be tested relatively early in this World Bowl. In a 10 game group stage, where each teams plays an opponent within its group twice, the Banijans would be playing 11th ranked Taeshan on the road in their opening game, and then in their 3rd game, playing 8th ranked Nassau-Hessen. Nothing is easy in the World Bowl, with the ferocious competition for so few spots in the knockout stages that will be played in Frenline Delpha & Drawkland.

The Banijans would have to be led by their defense, and they have been doing exactly that. In their first two games, they played 11th ranked Taeshan and the unranked Unified Isles. While those two teams are on opposite sides of the rankings spectrum, the Banijan defense treated both teams the same way. Both teams could not manage to put up a single point against the Banijans. While Banija did have a slight bit of luck against Taeshan, who did miss a 47 yard field goal at the end of the first half, neither team could manage to put up a single point against the Banijan defense. Nassau-Hessen was the first team to score against Banija, to narrowly avoid being the 3rd shutout in a row for this defense, but they were only able to score one touchdown against Banija, and Nassau-Hessen was playing on their home field.

Why is the defense so good? They are led by their front 7, and the Banijan defense in their first three games has been able to dominate the line of scrimmage. They have allowed less than 80 rushing yards a game in their first 3 games. Momir Litvinov, the team's star defensive end coming off of the edge in this 4-3 defense, has been able to wreak havoc and cause a lot of problems for opposing offenses in the backfield. His ability to explode off of the snap and get into the backfield has been a huge help for Northern Moravica in the NSCF, where the defense has been known as one of the NSCF's most dominating defenses. He commands a double team on every single passing down, and he is good at both pass-rushing and run defense.

The defense has two big men in the middle as well, in the names of Ejigu Johnson III & Slawoj Shuksin. When you have two interior lineman as strong as these men, it is very hard to do anything at the line of scrimmage as an offense. The Banijan defense is constantly winning the battle at the line of scrimmage, and that sets the tone for their success. The Banijans are unique in that they can consistently get pressure with 4 down linemen. While many strong defenses are built around their secondary, this one is built around a seriously talented defensive line. They are able to consistently drop 7 into coverage and still get pressure into the quarterback who, on second & long and third & long, does not have very much time to throw the football.

The Banijans have another away game, their 3rd in their first 4 matchups of this tournament, but this time they visit Abaja, the 3rd place team in the group who is 2-1 so far, but who just got walloped in their visit to 11th ranked Taeshan. The Banijan defense will be looking to dominate that game as well, and they know everything starts up front. When you have 10 sacks in 3 games from defensive linemen, you are going to win a lot of football games, and most importantly, nobody is going to get much of any offense going against your team. We'll see if they can keep up the momentum, and show the world that this ferocious front 7, especially the defensive line, can do enough to send Banija to the knockout stages and if they can even win this group for Banija.

4th quarter :05 score is 15-13 The Regulars (Allamunic States) in the lead over The Paladins (The united states of Saints).

It had all come down to this moment us (The Paladins) must attempt a field goal of 48 yards to win the game and I'm the one to kick the ball. In the four minutes prior of the game The Regulars were behind 8-13 but were able to drive down the field and score a touchdown. We had thought that they would go for two again to make it 16-13, but they only took one extra point. How odd wouldn't it make more sense to go for two just in case we tied it up with a field goal just like the one I'm about to kick? So now the score is 15-13 and we couldn't run the ball well either against there stout defense so we mixed it up with medium range pass plays and short runs to drive downfield to where we are now but I wish we had gone further down so I wouldn't feel as mich pressure of making this difficult field goal attempt as I do now. Whatever just. Focus the play is about to start.

"Ready."

Here it comes.

"Set."

Lord please let me make this kick.

"HUT!"

The ball was snapped and placed perfectly I eyed the goal posts as I kicked the ball praying in my mind that it would go. The defenders jumped as high as they could extending their arms to block the ball or at least tip it. They missed the ball just barely going above their fingertips. I watched as the ball soared through the air toward the goal posts. Yes! It was on target! But did I put enough power so that it would make it all the way there? Time seemed to stop for me in those moments and I watched as the ball was able to cross over the bottom bar. The crowd roared I had done it. It went in. My teamates rushed at me and tackled me to the ground praising me.

"Hell yes, way to go Nakamura!"

They hoisted me up on the shoulders and carried me all the way to the locker room. I felt great. I felt like a hero and I hope I get to experience this feeling again.

Paladins shock the world! Allamunic States is upset 15-16 in epic thriller losing their first game!

Aprilian Times -- In this close game The Paladins managed to upset the six time world champs, Allamunic States, 15-16 by a classic game winning field goal kicked by Louis Nakamura. The Paladins in a 1 minute 27 second time frame, managed to drive down the field far enough from their own 23 yard line to kick a 48-yard game winning field goal. Nakamura, the kicker, had made two field goals prior of 34 and 37 yards out. Usually Nakamura has trouble with field goals and has never made a field goal beyond 51 yards so this was just within his range.

Both teams had trouble scoring turning the ball over a lot in the first half ending with an 8-3 Allamunic States lead. The defenses were the main reason behind this. Both teams were known to have run heavy offenses while also having very strong defensive fronts that could stop the run. This led to very short yard gains rushing so both had to turn their weakness offensively, passing, into their strong point. This worked for both teams allowing the Regulars to score another touchdown and The Paladins scoring two more field goals, including the game winning field goal, and a touchdown.

For The Paladins, Matt Whelan didn't have as good of a game as against Shytysle but it was enough. He threw 18-36 for 176 yards and 1 TD, he had 2 early interceptions but didn't make a mistake in the second half and was sacked 3 times overall. Miguel Black struggled only rushing for 56 yards on 25 carries and a fumble.

Both defenses were terrifying with The Paladins recording 2 sacks and The Regulars recording 3. Both teams recorded 1 fumble each. In pass breakups The Paladins got 5 deflections and 1 Interception while the Allamunic states got 3 deflections and 2 interceptions.

Both Head coaches met after the game and praised each other for their team's performance and said they looked forward to the second and final game in the group stage.

Around Group A Mareut falls to The Anacondas 7-30 and Shytysle wins 37-19 against United States of Devonta. Because of the results of this game and the rest it looks as if the race for winning the group stage is wide open:

Group A
Allamunic States 15–16 The united states of Saints
Mareut 7–30 Frenline Delpha
Shytysle 37–19 United States of Devonta
# Group A Pld W L GF GA GD
1 Allamunic States 3 2 1 55 19 +36
2 Frenline Delpha 3 2 1 59 31 +28
3 The united states of Saints 3 2 1 52 48 +4
4 Shytysle 3 2 1 68 56 +12
5 United States of Devonta 3 1 2 26 62 −36
6 Mareut 3 0 3 17 61 −44

The Paladins next game is against United States of Devonta a team that seems to be struggling.

In the Locker room the players were all congratulating and thanking Louis Nakamura for winning the game for them.

"Guys guys I didn't win the game for us, we all did."

"You're exactly right Nakamura." All the players turned to see Coach Agresta standing at the door back from talking with The Regulars' head coach: Baeryk Vaalburger.

"What did I tell you guys? I told you that you could win even as major underdogs. Guess what? You won and I'm happy for you. However just because you beat them doesn't make you invincible so I don't want to see it getting to your head. You still have to work just as hard every game, scratch that you have to work harder! Now my defense did an amazing job holding up to keep us in the game and my offense for being able to put the points on the board to pull this off. Its obvious though that there is still work to be done and this next team seems to be struggling a bit offensively but I wanna play safe with the secondary and maintain a 4-3 defensive front next game. Offense also still has a lot of work but I'm sure that by the time the next game comes around you'll be ready and start clicking right off the bat. By the way as some motivation for ya we are still considered underdogs in this whole tournament. Now dismissed!

ETID - Part Three

"We left everything on the field for that game and we still lost. The defense had a monstrous performance but the offense just didn't click, and deep down, I feel like we were the better team. We're unranked and yet we held one of the top teams in the world to only six points. That's not an achievement that most teams can say they've accomplished. We're going to take what we learned from playing a more talented team and try to use that to improve our strategy for the remaining games. Don't ever think of counting us out in this group." - Rory Besic, during an interview with Sporternav after the 3-6 loss to Ko-oren by the Armeian national team.

Defense wins championships. For a team with such an up tempo and tricky offense, Anglatia sure lived and died by that motto. When they decided to blitz, blocking them was a matter of picking your poison. You could push Torrace Allen, the experienced pass rusher, out wide and give your quarterback time to step up in the pocket, but that would leave you open to Rory Besic and his speed rushes down the middle. You could put a running back on Taesha Kendrick when she moved down to linebacker, but there was no guarantee that being blocked by a running back would stop her, and that would mean that only one blocker was on Allen. If you focused on keeping the inside linebackers from rushing, you would have to watch out for the incredibly skillful edge rusher, Ziare Ali, who was a specialist at using swim moves and spins to get around tackles who aren't paying enough attention.

Sebastien Germaine, the Ko-oren QB, had to make these choices right now, as he was staring across the line of scrimmage at the assortment of defenders. There was Rory Besic, who was showing blitz, Taesha Kendrick, who was staring at him with those creepy black contacts, Ziare Ali, who was in the three point stance and ready to jump at any moment, and Taesha's little brother Alek, who looked like he was on a spy assignment. And the choice he made would have a large impact on the game, since it was a second down in overtime, the game tied at 10-10, with five yards to go for a first down. After calling out the protection, Sebastien took the snap from the shotgun formation and took a three step drop, surveying the field and looking for Yun Chung-Hee, the number one receiver who was supposed to beat Trista Prust on a vertical route.

Unfortunately for him, the Kendricks had dropped back into coverage to block the middle of the field, and Besic rushed the A gap, meaning that he had to either get rid of the ball or take a sack, and taking a sack would put them at a large disadvantage on third down. As he was about to be hit, he threw an off balance pass down field towards Chung-Hee, hoping that his receiver would be able to win the jump ball, but it didn't quite go as planned. Prust pushed off of him and had better positioning, rising into the air and coming down with the ball with one hand, cradling it against her chest as she hit the ground to avoid dropping it.

The referee ruled the play an interception because of Prust's ability to hold onto the ball, and the stadium erupted into boos. There were even more boos, of course, when Anglatia went on to kick the game winning field goal five plays later, all because of that poorly thrown jump ball. But while the fans in the stands that had traveled from Anglatia were celebrating, most of the defensive players on the bench were watching their captain, who had been slow to get up after the interception. "On a scale of one to ten, how much pain are you in?" asked Haru Ito, standing next to the bench where Trista was sitting and massaging her leg.

"It's not that bad," she replied, rolling her eyes. "Don't bother me about it unless it's bad enough that I can't walk... I can handle this."

"Is it only your leg that hurts, or is it your whole body? I'm just asking so we can help you. You don't want to keep hurting, do you?"

"I don't want the physios to shoot me with morphine and then make me lie down for the rest of the night. I want to celebrate with my friends," complained Trista. "But if you really have to know, it's mostly my lower body that hurts."

As Haru was about to say something else, Trista got up and walked away, before running into Storm Staford. "Tris. Just the person I was looking for," the running back said with a grin. "I want to ask you something. You might want to sit down for this, because it's going to surprise you."

"Yeah, right. Just ask me, Storm," chuckled Trista, putting her hands on her hips.

"Well... I know you wanted to keep things under wraps for a bit longer, but your friends from the secondary thought that this would be a good time to ask, so blame them and not me if it messes up the secret... But, I want to ask you something important..." started Storm, taking an object from behind his back and getting on one knee. "If you'll marry me."

Trista looked momentarily surprised, before smiling despite the pain that she was in. "Of course I will," she answered. Even though her expression was one of joy, there were worries in the back of her mind. If Storm was going to start a family with her, it might be wise for her to listen to the advice of her friends and stop playing, at least for awhile. After all, the reason why she wasn't afraid to continue playing was because she didn't have anyone to truly live for, and she was completely willing to gamble with her life. If she was married, her attitude might change... But for now, she didn't have to worry about all of that. It was a rare moment of happiness that allowed her to take her mind off of her career troubles, even if it was just for the rest of the night.

Ty Leroux was hitting the gym the day after the last game, trying to get more muscular now that he was playing against pros and not college players. Unfortunately, he kept getting interrupted by text, and he eventually stepped off of the treadmill and looked at his phone, seeing who was texting him. Kris Berksson, his teammate in the secondary; 'Dude, I need you to come over' was what her latest text said. He sent back a quick reply.

'I'm busy in the gym, and then I have a meeting with the DBs coach with Ciar and Tris. Maybe later.'

'Just skip it. I need to talk to you.'

'I skipped a meeting last time Rory wanted someone to lift with, the others are going to be pissed if I miss one again. What do you need to talk about?'

'Can't say over text. Are you coming or not?'

'I'll try to come over tonight.'

There was no reply after a few minutes, and Ty sighed and stepped back onto the treadmill, wondering what Kris had wanted to talk about that was so important that he needed to skip a meeting for it.

Head Coach: Buck Natters, 78

Strategy: On offence, Natters uses a 2 RB set and uses a smashmouth running attack to force the safeties to watch the RB and then airs it out deep to the wideouts and uses the TE either as a blocker or a receiver. On defense, Naters uses a complex zone blitz scheme that involves LB's and DE's dropping in and out of zone coverage changing blitzing schemes while the CB's play man on the outside helped out by the safeties to watch any deep pass

Toucans Shut Out Caball

Postby The Fair Republic » Mon May 02, 2016 1:32 pm

-FRP(Caball)The Fair Republic Toucans dominated unranked Caball 26-0, setting up a key match versus hosts and group leaders Drawkland. The Toucans defense dominated from the outset. Caball was only able to gain 113 yards and they turned the ball over 5 times. Things started off quickly for the Toucans in the 1st quarter when Caball's punter bobbled the ball in the end zone, allowing the Toucans to get a safety. On the subsequent possession, Adrian Crawford scored on a 57 yard run. A pick six by Tom Smith gave the Toucans a quick 16-0 lead. The Toucans were able to extend the lead to 23-0 before halftime on a short pass to Brain Udderson. After halftime, Coach Buck Natters rested the starters and experimented with some new plays. A Brandon Yarlson field goal was the only score of the half. Natters said, "The boys played well today. However, we cannot become complacent and come out sluggish against Drawkland. It will be loud and we need to the crowd out of it if we have any chance to win"

Scoring Summary:

World Bowl XXIX

Abaja goes 2-2 after second straight loss

-By David Osesé & Amina Ogwu 4:59 P.M

Abaja 3 - 17 Banija

The Abaja Lions had another disappointing loss, this time against R.26 Banija. Abaja is now at .500. Many Lions' fans left the stadium shaking their heads. "Abaja is starting to slack! We can't afford to lose another game it could cost us the playoffs!" Says an upset Lions' fan. "Yeah! The Lions' offense is so weak and now that we lost Guinior Lukenta, our defense is having problems stopping the opponents' offense. He was our star DT!" Says another upset Lions' fan. Many fans are starting to see that the Lions' aren't trying, and that they don't take their opponent very seriously. "I can't even believe what I just saw the last two days. This offense is playing so weak and now our defense is starting to struggle." Says the Lions' assistant coach, Jared Mukátí. In the first quarter, Abaja started off with a 72 yard drive to put themselves in field goal position. They then scored a field goal after just 3 minutes in. Little did they know that this was going to be their only time scoring. Banija was unable to answer back. They later punted. Abaja started looking confident, but a little TOO confident. They started mocking Banija. Desna Osopno (QB) threw a bullet pass to Bobby Odendé (WR) and he ran all the way to the Banija 35 yard line. 31 yard gain for that play. The next play, Vincent Oleamu (HB) fumbled the ball after being popped by a Banija DE. Banija Recovered it. In the second quarter, it got even worse for Abaja. Even though Desna Osopno (QB) threw a 22 yard pass to Bobby Odendé (WR), he later got sacked, then threw an interception. Trash talk between the Abajan offense and Banijan defense. It seemed as if there was a type of rivalry starting to flare up. A few minutes left in the second quarter, Banija made a field goal to tie it up 3-3. Abaja later punted after just a minute and a half during possession. Banija had the ball with 48 seconds left on their own 26 yard line. The Banijan QB completed a pass to his tight end for a quick 15 yard gain. The QB later threw an incomplete pass. 13 seconds left, the Banjian QB threw a pass to his WR. The WR caught it and broke a tackle. He was gone. Banija scored a 59 yard TD.

Halftime: Abaja 3 - 10 Banija. Bobby Odendé (WR) caught another pass for 20 yards. And many more. Abaja was on their opponents' 28 yard line on 4th and 11. The kick was up, but no good! That was the first missed field goal by Abaja in this tournament. More time passed, only a few minutes remain in the third quarter. Malik Mafausa (RB) ran for 18 yards before being pushed out of bounds. He only had a few runs that game, but boy did he make the most of it. 4 runs for 52 yards. Bobby Odendé (WR) caught yet another pass from Desna Osopno (QB) for a quick 13 yards. It just seemed as if Abaja was main these plays, but couldn't score when they got to the Banija RedZone. Their defense was just too fierce. The fourth quarter started. Abaja punted again. It was a good punt, putting the Banijans on their own 6 yard line. They went for a 58 yard drive before punting the ball back to Abaja. Mohammadu Shepada (TE) caught a deep pass from Desna Osopno (QB) but got stripped and Banija recovered. Abajans watching started to facepalm. It seemed as if Abaja would never score because of how many times they've choked this game. Banija took advantage of the turnover and the Banijan QB passed for 29 yards and their RB ran for 34, for a touchdown. It was now 3-17 with 2 minutes left. The Lions knew they lost. Their final drive was unsuccessful, and punted. The Banijan QB kneeled the ball, and the game was over. Bobby Odendé (WR) had a huge game. He finished off with 12 catches, and 289 yards. But that wasn't enough to beat Banija. Guinior Lukenta remains on the injury list.

Vietussia saves World Bowl title hopes with OT win on the road

A close game against Leaf Kingdom in double OT showed to the world that when properly motivated, Vietussia can be a force to be reckoned with on the road, beating Leaf Kingdom in double OT 23-20, possibly saving Vietussia from a looming 0-3 collapse to start Group D play. Another road game in Downination could be the game that brings or breaks momentum for the Vietussian team before facing top ranked Gregoryisgodistan.

Finishing 3-2 would be a miracle for the Vietussian team with the difficult road stretch over 3 of the first four games. The home game against Gregoryisgodistan could really come down to the fans if Vietussia can keep it close into the half. 2-3 would be most likely at this point, setting up a chance for a home stretch that could propel Vietussia to a 5-5 or even a 6-4 record.

Vietussia has been lead by quarterback Frey Wolf, who has over 1,000 passing yards to start the season. He has set up many of the close games only to fall short in the last minutes to tough defense. If he can break out and find a way around these iron walls, Vietussia could have a strong chance to make the World Bowl playoffs.

Vietussia will look to the future in the coming days in hopes of finding a way to get past this brutal stretch, especially after the bombings in Hankow.

Speaking of which, Vietussia will have to move away from Papa Vulcan Arena while structural damages are repaired. The games will be played at the gaelic football pitch in Hankow, where the field will be modified to resemble a football stadium before the match. All rules will stay the same. Repairs are expected to be finished in the final MDs of the World Bowl regular season.

I hope to see you tonight. This is Jeb Ports, live from the Leaf Kingdom. Have a good evening, and go Vulcans!

REVIEW
After 4 short days of play, Drawkland has managed to do something out of the ordinary and top their group for once! It's pretty unprecedented, but hopefully this begins to be a trend, as similar results have been had at the NSCAA with Drawkland's best collegiate basketball teams. As you may be able to tell, the group is pretty spread out, no tight race for first spot, as Drawkland now has a monopolizing chokehold on that position after the 7-0 win over San Llera. The Grid Corps is Group E's only undefeated team, with San Llera beating out The Fair Republic for second spot with point differential.

Now that that's quite over with, here's some quick recaps over the last 3 games which have firmly sat Drawkland as king of the current heap in Group E.

vs SAN LLERA
This game was known to be tough going in, as San Llera is not only ranked 7th in the world, but is the best team in the Group (by both rank and past performance, after securing a playoff berth last World Bowl). The Grid Corps was very apprehensive of the game ahead, especially with the away crowd disadvantage they'd be forced to deal with. Coach Quentin Averfel spoke the day before the game at a press conference:
This is most definitely going to be the hardest challenge of our boys yet, and it's rather unfortunate that we don't have the opportunity to get more "warmed up" into this match so to speak. After a pretty close match against newcomers in Caball, only beating them by a field goal, I'm not so confident that we'll have enough forward momentum to block out San Llera's powerful offense. The Swagfish's quarterback, Basso, has a monster of an arm, but if we can take advantage of his decision-making, we might be able to stop them enough times to eventually get ahead. That's all I can hope right now.

And hope certainly seemed to do the job. In a nailbiter of a match which yielded no score until the 4th quarter, Drawkland eventually managed to score in the most unlikely way possible. In the 4th quarter, with only 4 minutes left on the clock, San Llera had the ball. Edmund Synder, a Grid Corps linebacker from the Drawk City Lookouts, squeezed past Aaron Gonia and sprinted directly into Agusti Basto, the San Lleran quarterback. Basto was caught off guard and was completely pummeled, and accidentally flung the ball off to the side as he fell. That was, of course, a fumble, and the offense and defense both scrambled to recover the ball, which had flown 3 yards back and about 5 yards over from where Basto was hit. Jordan Tomek, from the Baribone Wyrms, recovered the ball quickly and brought it to the 37 yard line, San Llera side. The Grid Corps offense quickly trotted out, and a single play later (Dak Waterman handed to an Antonio Anders run) brought Drawkland's greatest to another first down, now on the 24 yard line. Waterman dodged a sack attempt by Marco Chara and bulleted a pass to Daniel Madison, who charged past Enric Paldo right into the end zone, to the chagrin of most of the assembled fans in San Llera. However, the Drawkland side went berserk, and the black&red side of the stadium erupted in a flurry of cheers. Matthew Watts expertly tacked on the extra point, and Drawkland had taken the lead, 7-0. By now the 2-minute warning had come up, and San Llera just couldn't answer in the time left, especially after only having 1 timeout left.
The ecstatic Drawkian crowd monkeyed around in the stands for another half hour after the game concluded, and the players, after mainly cleaning up, went to join them for a 10-minute block of chanting and celebrating in the stands. A huge victory for sure.

vs VILEMYR
The game versus Vilemyr, the first back home in Drawkland, was certainly an exciting one. Vilemyr managed to score 2 TDs, however missing the extra point on the second. Drawkland answered accordingly, keeping the game tied at 13-13. However, Vilemyr couldn't keep up with the Drawkian momentum in the second half, coming empty-handed while the Grid Corps put out 2 touchdowns, and 2 field goals (in that order). The end result was a massive 20-point lead, 13-33, but it still didn't match up to San Llera's crushing of Caball that day, 44-3.

vs SAREJO
Sarejo was expected to be the "harder" of the unranked nations in Group E, and it showed. With the score 6-6 in the end of the 3rd quarter (Vierdag-Sereno, Waterman-Madison), the pressure was bearing down on both teams in Flanders Inc. Field. Fortunately for the Drawkians, their luck turned when Jason McFarland crushed a punt from 49 yards to sail through the goalposts on 4th down, giving them a 3-point pad to keep the game running. Sarejo just couldn't match the revitalized Corps defense, and the game stayed 9-6 for the remainder of play.

PREDICTIONS
As the group stands now, it's pretty apparent that San Llera and Drawkland are the teams to make it into the final bracket, unless some major upsets start being thrown in. This would be a huge jump for Drawkland after being swept aside in all sports categories thus far, and be a boon to the future of Drawkian sports. So hopefully the luck holds through the later half of group play.
The next matchup is against The Fair Republic, in Metro Arena. With the home crowd advantage, the massive momentum, and the current skill of the Corps, it's expected to end 14-20, Drawkland favored. The Fair Republic is nothing to sniff at, considering their current 3rd placing and same W-L record as group rivals San Llera. They've also given up as many points as San Llera, which definitely means a large amount of points is not to be assumed. However, their lackluster offensive drive will give the Drawkian defense a good chance to shut them down and keep the win in Drawkland.
After this matchup is the bye, and then the schedule goes again, with the home/away spots switch. Hopefully this streak of winning holds through the second half, and the opposing teams don't get too wise to the Grid Corps tactics.

Good luck to the Grid Corps!

The Iron Legion, Part 4

Earl Baas was sweating nervously at the end of regulation in The Iron Legion's game against Zacistania. There was Randy Head, to attempt the tying field goal to give Baas's defense a chance at redemption after such a horrid second half they had played against Zacistania. An unranked, winless team, Zacistania had come in looking for any kind of spark or lifeline, and Baas and his defensive mates had given it to them, in the form of missed tackles, dropped interceptions, blown assignments, and altogether a lack of focus that had resulted in Zacistania scoring two touchdowns and a field goal to take the lead. Thankfully, Mercado and McDonald had come to life then, and generated this drive that had stalled at the Zacistania twenty-four with fifteen seconds to go, and Coach Von Schroeder has elected to play it safe and play for overtime. Derrick Wiley and Brandon Bridges had caught one scoring pass each, as Mercado had tallied over two hundred yards in the air, most of it on short check-downs to Frye and McDonald except for the scoring plays, which had been both passes of over twenty-five yards. The offense had played Chromatik Gridiron, but the defense had finally chosen to stall when they were needed the most, and now, redemption depended on Head's field goal.

Right before he was about to kick the ball, Zacistania called a time-out to ice Randy Head. Earl Baas grinned. He knew Randy, and there was no way that old trick would work. From around the forty-yard range, Randy was almost automatic; half the time he didn't even look at where he was kicking, and just went out and did it. Even if you stop a machine from going once, it will be ready to go again, and that was what Randy would do. Sure enough, the snap from Byron Sheppard was good, the hold by Jeremy Duncan was solid, and the kick sailed through the uprights cleanly to send the game to overtime.

Baas jogged over to where Von Schroeder and Defensive Coordinator Limen were exchanging words. He sent Barry Diaz out for the overtime coin toss in his stead; he wanted to talk with his coaches. They decided that when Zacistania were to get the ball, Baas would come on a safety blitz to try to sack the quarterback and disrupt the rhythm the opposing side had built during the second half. Earl was very excited with the prospect - he wanted to remind Zacistania that this was the defense that had stopped both The Royal Kingdom of Quebec and Cosumar from scoring too many points on The Iron Legion. It was time to send a message.

Zacistania won the toss, and elected to receive. Head's kickoff was downed in the end zone for a touchback, and Baas jogged into the huddle with his defense.

"Six twenty-eight! Six twenty-eight!" He stated in the huddle. The guys around him looked at him, and nodded. Diaz, Pena, Hernandez, and Griffith didn't even look tired, as they were some of the most conditioned big men to ever play Gridiron. Diaz leaned over and said to him, "I'll take care of two guys, you make sure to get him, and get him good. I've seen how the guy carries the ball, a nice hit could jar it loose. All right?"

Baas nodded as he went over to line up next to Lynch and Davenport, four yards beyond the line of scrimmage. There was no need to choreograph his actions, nor to oversell it. He was fast enough, that was for certain. All he would have to do is make sure the Quarterback wasn't going to scramble, and if so, just penetrate through the line and tackle him before he got the ball away. From the eye signals between the Quarterback and his receivers, it seemed like a routine pass play. So, Baas readied himself, his body still and calm, despite the excitement rushing through his veins.

He didn't hear the snap count, for the audience was far too loud for that. However, he did see the ball get snapped, and in a split second he could see that the Quarterback was not going to run. Diaz had pushed himself up against two of the offensive linemen, and Pena, Hernandez, and Griffith had also pushed their men south. Baas streaked in, and was pleased to see that the Quarterback hadn't noticed him - the man was too busy trying to look for an open man.

He saw the right arm go up, and then hit the Quarterback's throwing elbow with his shoulder with a loud "Bang!". The ball popped loose, and he dove for it. The Quarterback had had the wind knocked out of him, and was in no position to try to go for it. The penetration by The Iron Legion's defensive line had caused the offensive line to be far away from the quarterback; there was nobody between Baas and the ball. He picked it up, and saw the open grass before him, and sprinted toward the end zone, eventually joined by his backfield mates of McLean, Farley, and Stewart. They had won, and the defense had gone from giving up seventeen points to a weak side to scoring the winning touchdown. It was blessed redemption.

Earl knew that tougher games would be ahead - Halleconia to round things off, then back to The Royal Kingdom of Quebec, who would be looking for revenge - but it was still good to know that his teammates would not give up because of one bad play. No, they would instead fight till the very end, just like they should. This thought gave him hope, made him proud to wear the uniform of... The Iron Legion.
