Nation: Ethane
Team Nickname: Red Kites
Style Mod: -5
Trigramme: ETN
Formation: 5-3-2
Starting XI:
Goalkeeper: Brody Church - 24 - South Saints FC
At 24 years of age, he has proven to be a real asset to his domestic team, and, in the last season for South Saints FC, having the most clean sheets of all keepers in the league. He first competed in the national team during the Baptism of Fire, missing out at the Olympics and the Emperors Cup II to Fraser, who has since moved on to different pastures, and retired from football, like everyone that played in that team, due to the now more professional nature of football in Ethane. Having been part of the Ethanian team that competed in the Baptism of Fire, where he showed his remarkable skill in goal, keeping out many decent shots at vital points in the game, he has proven his capability to play well under pressure. Also, in the most recent World Cup, he proved to be vital in the team for Ethane, keeping 5 clean sheets out of the 12 played games, all against far superior teams, excluding the world number 12, Saintland. He has a good work ethic, and is always concentrated on the game at hand, rather than letting himself get distracted when the ball is not near. With fast reflexes, and a long dive, he is the perfect candidate to protect the net for Ethane in the Campionato Esportiva.
Left Back: Sid Gibbs - 26 - Loconstead United FC
Sid Gibbs is a vital part of the defensive structure of this team, providing a key block along the wing to back up the strong centre-backs. Emerging as one of the strongest Ethanian defenders, he has the capability to intercept most balls and block many passes down the wing. He is also relatively pacey, proving vital in charging down any attackers down the left wing, and providing backup to the other defenders. He, however, isn't the most adept in tacking, but he makes up for this in his interception skills, as well as his marking and tracking ability. Rising in prominence when he was signed for the Loconstead United side, which will be part of the professional structure that is being developed now, he rapidly cemented his position as number one defender for the team, securing his position. He suffered a year from injury at the age of 24, which left him feeling defeated, but he game back from the injury even more determined to do well, and has been playing at his best ever since. After a long struggle for the position in the national team, including only 1 showing at the Emperors Cup II, he solidified his position after a decent performance at the Baptism of Fire, in which he played a vital role in pulling off the draw against Quazira and limiting the scoring of Whovian Tardisia on the final match, which allowed the team to snatch victory and progress against all odds. Going on into the World Cup, he played an important role in the defensive structure of the team, limiting Saintland, in the second match against them during qualification, to only winning by a margin of 1 goal, 1-2, which was a very strong showing by the Ethanian team, considering what was the calibre and rank of both teams at that point, in which Saintland was by far the superior team. Sid Gibbs, after a fairly decent performance in Ethane's first Cup of Harmony, will be looking to just play his best here, and impress further.
Centre Back- Tyler Appleby- 23- Dovertown FC
With a strong tackle, Tyler is well-built for this position. Broad, and well built, he is an extremely intimidating player to run towards, shown by Tyler winning the award for the most intimidating player of the year award this year. Gifted in tacking others who are charging at him, he can cut many people off, and has performed many off the line clearances, including one at the Baptism of Fire, in the 0-0 draw against Quazira, to save the match, and the position in the tournament, for his country. Extremely fit, he also has plenty of stamina and speed, so it is extremely difficult to get past him, and he is almost guaranteed to be a secure bet to rely on for the whole match, as it seems like he has endless energy. Having a fairly average performance at the World Cup, in which he failed to impress amongst his other team-mates, and sometimes being outperformed by the substitutes on and off the pitch, he was on the edge as to whether he would be selected for this tournament, but the performance he gave in the Cup of Harmony has kept him in this team just a little longer.
Centre Back- Darien Fear- 19- South Saints FC
Being very young compared to most of the rest of the team, he was seen as the surprise pick of this tournament, over many other more experienced players in the league. However, this does seem to fit with the manager, Curtis Steeling's, policy of creating a young team, and building up for the future, which has certainly proven to be successful based off the most recent World Cup, and less so, the Baptism of Fire. He has placed a bunch of really strong performances in his defensive role during the Baptism of Fire and World Cup, which has seen his position secured in the national team. He also proved to be a vital player in the win against The Sword Bloke in a friendly, another higher ranked team at the team, 3-1. He is an extremely passionate player, but can sometimes make vital mistakes, shown in the 3-0 loss to Saintland during the World Cup. However, he is still a valuable asset to the national team, and will be expected to play his best during this very important tournament for Ethane, to keep the back sturdy on the pitch.
Centre Back- Joby Lindsay- 29- CAPTAIN- AFC Brightonhill
With a wealth of experience behind him, Joby Lindsay is a football mastermind when it comes to plans and organisation of defence. Seen as the defensive captain, he prides himself to have achieved defender of the year twice in the past 5 years- a massive feat with the level of defence skill in Ethane. While not being the fastest or fittest defender around, he has a smart mind, so always finds himself in the right position at the right time. Seen more as the last line before the last line, he often holds back a bit while letting the 2 younger centre backs chase down the ball and tackle. He is skilled when it comes to tackling, and can deliver a good few strong, but clean blows to attacks, stopping them in their tracks. Is good at defending corners, as he is strong with his head, and has a really powerful header to his name. He had a strong Baptism of Fire, where he lead the Ethanian team as Captain to the quarter-finals, and also secured as captain, 17 points in a competitive World Cup group game. Having a slightly poorer than was expected Cup of Harmony, he was at risk of being dumped, but if he doesn't perform well at the Campionato Esportiva, than his position in the team will be in jeopardy.
Right Back- Cameron Snyders- 18- Dovertown FC
With no international experience on the field prior to the recent friendlies, Cameron is seen as an interesting choice for the first team. Taking the place from Aric Weaver, who disappointed in the Baptism of Fire, he placed in a strong performance in the friendlies against The Sword Bloke and Caermine, which consolidated his place on the team for the World Cup, where he performed relatively well to his age, maintaining his position on the squad for just a bit longer. Being the youngest player on a team which seems to be packed with younger players, he is the least experienced of all the players, having only played football professionally for 1 season. However, after putting in a very strong performance for his first season, where he deeply impressed the manager of the Ethane national team, he has been placed into the team, on a measure that could lead to his replacement any day if he fails to perform to the needed level. Into this tournament, Snyders will be helping to utilise his position on the team to the full extent, and secure his place for future years on the team.
Left Midfielder- Kevyn Stidolph- 28- Perringbury FC
He is an extremely experienced football player, and very professional in his style of play. He is somewhat a surprise package for the national team, with incredulous pace for his age, which leaves the opposition players left glued to the spot as he races past them. In the amateur Ethanian league, which is soon to become professional, he was a key performer for his team, and a strong candidate for player of the season, as his exquisite performances, and sportsmanlike attitude to the game, shine through like a lighthouse on a stormy day in every match. Being extremely intelligent when it comes to his footwork, and how he plays the game, he can outmanoeuvre defenders who attempt to steal the ball with ease, and, with not just a strong, accurate cross, to place the ball in the right place in the box for a perfect set-up, but also the ability to threaten the defence of the opposition team in his own right, by charging in from the wings of the pitch, and therefore terrorise the defensive structure of his opponents through his crippling play style, which other teams find hard to combat. Through a strong performance in the Baptism of Fire, and the World Cup, he has guaranteed a secure position in this team at least for a while, with Stidolph being the number one for the team not coming into this tournament. However, with his age slowly creeping up, and his performance expected to begin to deteriorate from now on, it remains to be seen how long he actually has left in the national side, as his inclusion in the squad, the older he gets, goes against the philosophy of the manager, Curtis Steeling, who believes in a cycle of players, and keeping things in the team young and fresh, so while it remains unlikely that he will perform in the next world cup (although there is still a possibility), it is still up in the air whether he will be competing in any further tournaments after this one, however, this was also said before the Cup of Harmony and Aurorealis Regional League, and he did well in those, so only time will tell. If he were to suffer an injury, it would probably end his career at this stage.
Centre Midfielder- Colton Radcliffe- 25- Merseyshore City
After his teams move towards a more attacking formation in the amateur Ethanian league, which saw his role as a central defensive midfielder change to a centre midfielder, in light to fit in with the new formation that was adopted by his national team, he has seemingly flourished, which has seen his inclusion in the national team, although his position still remains a heavily fought and disputed one. He is a strong candidate for the role, with the ability to hold possession of the ball well, with intelligence, to help him with his passing, where he seems to almost always place the ball in the correct position. With a masters in long passes, providing constant long balls for the faster of the strikers to run on to, he provides a threat to the team he is playing against. With a good balance between his two roles as midfielder, of defence and attack, he often provides a more laid back, defensive performance than the wingers, who charge off to launch a deadly all sides attack on the defensive structure of the oppositions team. He isn't the most capable when it comes to tackling, but he makes up for the lack of performance in this department through his interception and marking ability, which compliments his style of play. Seen as the backbone of the structure of the team, he is a vital player in the teams ability to perform, and while his position is disputed, he is a hard player to replace. In light of recent performances, where he has impressed regularly in matches against superior opponents, such as the 1-2 loss to Saintland - while being a loss, some see this as the surprise performance of the World Cup qualification cycle for Ethane - where he provided what could be described as the skeletal backbone to the team, which kept his team together, and always within that 1 goal margin of their opponents. Also providing a key attack performance in the destruction of The Sword Bloke in a friendly, his position, although still disputed, as it has been for a while, is becoming more and more secure with every game he plays, every strong performance he dishes out. In the victory against Dreamplanet, he also held the team together, even when crumbling, to just pull off a victory.
Right Midfielder- Kenith Durand- 22- Llandudno Local FC
Being from the same team as one of the two national team's strikers- Llandudno Local FC - who provided the surprise performance of the final amateur league season, he is in a strong position to form a partnership with the striker - which is what he does - to deliver his fluent, skilled style of play that is reflected in his performances. With the increased focus on defence, and less focus on the attacking method of winning games, with the 5 in the back formation, Durand often goes against the overall team defensive ethos, providing a strong attacking force, providing a much more aggressive style of play, which compliments the strikers in Rigby Headley and Dewayne Boivin. He is relatively pacey in his play, which can provide a strong counter attack along with the pace of Rigby Headley to devastate the opponents when they least expect it. Having only played at his local club for 2 years, he has developed into a mature, yet energetic, young player, who has the ability to wreak havoc on the defensive structure of any team on any given day - a large contributing factor to the 3-1 win in a friendly against The Sword Bloke just before the World Cup. He has also formed an almost impenetrable bond with the striker of the national team, Dewayne Boivin, which has lead to a remarkable partnership forming on and off the pitch, helping the pair work seamlessly for goals domestically and internationally, helping in many victories during the World Cup, but less so the Baptism of Fire, where Boivin didn't score until the last game in the group, to save the national team. Having not been a part of the team in the Baptism of Fire, which could be argued now was the reason why the team seemed to struggle so much in the group stages, without a goal until the third game, which had seen a loss and a draw for the national team in their first 2 group games, in favour of the disappointing Jaylin Deering, Kenith Durand has not had so much time to cement his position on the national team. However, with his remarkable performances in multiple friendlies, and in the World Cup Qualification stages, which saw a massive improvement in performance from the Baptism of Fire, it is expected that he will remain on this team for many years to come, including, hopefully, the next World Cup.
Left Forward- Rigby Headley- 18- Carredington FC
Seen as a wildcard - a youthful injection into the striker lineup with the change in formation from the Baptism of Fire, which has seen much greater success for the team, against much superior opponents - he has, surprisingly, secured a first team position for not only the world cup, but also many tournaments after for the nation. After a successful world cup, if not a bit subdued due to being overshadowed if such by the ageing Dewayne Boivin, Headley has shown his ability to make miraculous chances out of what seems like nothing, in the few goals that he did score during the qualification campaign for the World Cup. He doesn't have the so-called magical touch that other strikers - such as Dewayne Boivin - are claimed to hold, but what he does have - and this is obviously what the selectors saw in him - was the work rate and the work ethic that he holds, which allows him to make chances on goal out of nothing. He is good at beating the defence, being rather pacey, but does not have the finishing that is up to an amazing standard, but only enough to be on this team. He is more likely to struggle against a defensive team, which is where his counterpart striker, Dewayne Boivin, tends to flourish slightly more. Having only been in Carredington for 1 season, he astounded fans, with his ability to pull goals out of nowhere like you pull a rabbit out of a magicians hat, which led people to wander why this remarkable player had been left to ferment in the lower leagues of the football ladder in Ethane. With a youthful mindset, he can occasionally find himself in a spot of bother when off the pitch, but when on the pitch, his performance and character remains calm, disciplined and mature. Not having the best of World Cup cycles, almost taking a back seat as such to Boivin, he is still in a place where his position in the team is disputed, and he will need a strong performance in this tournament to maintain his role. However, with the ethos of the man up top, it remains likely that Boivin will leave the national team before he does.
Right Forward- Dewayne Boivin- 28- Llandudno Local FC
Having performed astounding well in the final season of the amateur Ethanian football league, saving his team from relegation to finish 15th out of 20th, 15 points above the relegation zone, when they were predicted to finish dead last in the league, he was quickly picked up on by the national team manager, Curtis Steeling, who rapidly gave him a starting role on the national Ethanian team for the Baptism of Fire - a controversial move which proved to work out well for the team. Having had plenty of experience in the lower leagues of the football pyramid in Ethane, he has a solid experience base of which to base his attacks upon, and fulfil the role of lead Ethanian striker that he seems to have acclaimed through his performances in the Baptism of Fire and the World Cup. Performing well after he got going in the Baptism of Fire, he saved the team, allowing them to progress, by scoring the winning goal in the final moments of the final group match to give the team the much needed win to secure progression in the tournament. Failing to score in the first 2 games, the first one being a surprise loss against Oisinistan, and the second game being a dull 0-0 draw against Quazira, who ended up winning the group, after winning their final game, which gave Ethane the position to progress, Boivin was heavily criticised for being unable to find the goal in any of his matches, which was seemingly damaging the teams chances in the tournament. However, recovering from this to go on a goal streak all the way to the quarter-finals, where the team was knocked out of the Baptism of Fire, he showed his ability to deliver the goods when needed, and perform well when the pressure was at its highest level - a difficult feat for any player of any calibre. Furthermore, he has cemented his position is this team, arguably more than anyone else in this team, through the 2 pre-World Cup friendlies, which saw wins against higher calibre opponents, and in the World Cup qualification stages, where the team managed to beat much superior teams, and stay in contention for qualification, through Boivin, and occasionally, but less so, Headley's goals. With a strong final touch, he is good at connecting with crosses and finishing shots, with a good accuracy percentage and goal to shot ratio. One of his main downfalls, however, is his speed, which, with his age, means that he cannot rush around the defenders to get a clear shot on goal, and more and more now, relies on other players to deliver the ball to him and bring it up the pitch, where he tends to sit, ready for any counter attack that may materialise, rather than helping out with the defence, where he would not prove much use to the team.
Goalkeeper- Slade Spearing- 25- Castle of Newton United FC
With great eye-hand coordination, and a willingness to play, he has gained himself a strong position as a sub at the world cup, beating off other goalkeepers from all over the league for the place. Putting pressure on Brody Church, he has constantly been up behind him for that 1st team position, but has been unable to grasp it as of yet, apart from when Brody could not play. However, with the decreasing form of Brody Church, which is seeing him slowly lose faith in him from the management of the team, although not completely dissipated yet, Spearing is looking to assert himself as the replacement for Church, refusing to let someone else nick the spot. That is what he tried to do at the World Cup, and with his unique style of goalkeeping, which seems to work well, he is well placed to do just that, but has been unable to do so, as of yet. It is likely that he will be used in a few of the matches in this tournament to test him out.
Left Back/ Right Back- Orval Millward- 21- Briston Rovers FC
Young, but mature in his style of play, Orval is unique in his name, and his speed. He is fast, but has low stamina, leaving him in the perfect place to provide a injection into the team for the last 20 minutes or so of a game, but not enough to last a whole match. With the ability to play as a left back or a centre back, his plurality of playable positions has helped him in his quest to get onto the team. Unable to really challenge for the first team places, due to his level of skill not being nearly adequate enough, and his stamina unable to last long enough for a match, he has only really been included in the team for the injection of energy into the team that he can provide, and the plurality of defensive positions that he can play in. He has a strong initiative though, and can provide great support to an attacking winger by advancing up the wing not far behind due to his pace.
Centre-Back- Earle Thacker- 23- South Saints FC
Another strong player from a now strong team, Earle provides a great threat to any attackers who dare threaten the defence. With a deadly tackle, he often takes out the ball from players feet, clearing any threat to the goal. However, he is somewhat of a liability, and often can, when clearing out the ball from the oppositions feet, he can often clear out the opposition as well. He is notorious for getting red cards, breaking the record for most red cards in a season last year by being awarded 8 red cards in the whole season. He is very violent, and can sometimes get in a fight, but most of the time he puts this anger into his gameplay, being a ferocious defender that no one wants to come face to face with.
Centre Back- Jonah Park- 31- Carredington FC
Past his best, he has been removed from his place on the first team of old, and has been demoted to the role of a substitute. While not playing at the level he used to, he has upped his game in terms of thinking and analysing the situation, and has become a lot more adept when he has the ball. He is often very good at getting the ball away from the goal, and blocking shots, but he is weaker when it comes to tackling. Great with masterminding gameplans, if he was still in the first team, he would have the role of captain. Still having that wow factor, he is often the first choice for Centre-Back when it comes to substituting someone on to replace the first team right back.
Centre Back- Aric Weaver- 21- Perringbury FC
Demoted from his role on the first team after a disappointing Baptism of Fire, he has just about managed to cling onto a sub role in the team after redeeming himself slightly in an impressive friendly against The Sword Bloke, in which he was substituted on in the 69th minute. Providing a great backup option to the first team, he has a strong tackle, which is often brutal against attacking teams. When he comes into the zone, he is one of the best players in Ethane, but he does not have the greatest attitude, and is not always in the zone when it comes to playing for his nation, which often lets down the rest of his team.
Left-Back/Right-Back- Robert Kay- 25- Teeranshire FC
One of the more calm players in the team, he always seems optimistic and relaxed in his outlook. Making the game look easily, he passes and tackles with ease, often filling in gaps left by other players. Taking decisions as they go, he is probably the most respectful of all the players towards the referee, listening to everything they say. Strong on passing, he is often left down by his lack of depth in vision, although this is made up by the speed at which he can play.
Left Midfielder- Nicky Vitaliango- 26- Caernarfon United FC
Only recently playing professionally, what stopped this player from reaching the first team was his lack of experience. Having not yet competed in a full season in Ethane's top flight, the manager was reluctant to let this player into the team, but was only persuaded by an impressive performance in his last match. With a fast pace, and a strong built, he is perfect for his role, but needs to develop his stamina to get a position on the first team.
Right Midfielder- Grosvenor Emmet- 21- Carredington FC
Just pipped to the first team place by Kenith Durand, his performances in the domestic league have seen his upwards pressure on exerted on the management to give him the first team place continuously increase. Dependant on performances at this tournament, it is expected that he will take the first team spot after the tournament, although this has not been confirmed yet, to not put pressure on the team during the vital stages of the tournament. With a strong passion for football, his game has continuously developed, and if he continues at this rate, he is set to be one of Ethane's greatest players.
Centre Forward- Wilmer Jaurequi- 16- Caernarfon United
The biggest surprise of this team, considering he doesn't even have a first team role in his own team. Seen as not ready to handle the pressure yet, he has never been tested internationally before, having only played a few games in the domestic league himself. He does have bundles of energy however, and is currently one of Ethane's fastest players, which goes along with the ethos of defend, then counter attack with pace. It remains to be seen whether he can impress in this team, or whether he falls to his knees under the pressure that will be exerted on him while playing out there.
Manager- Curtis Steeling- 39
A fairly young man for the national team manager, he has surprised everyone with his competence. Having a fairly successful Baptism of Fire, reaching the Quarter-Finals, he was chosen to lead the nation into the World Cup. Through this, he proved to be very competent with his choices, leaving Ethane beating many superior teams, and in with a chance of getting into the playoffs to qualify for the World Cup proper, which the team fell just short of. Seen highly by the manager selectors for the national team, he is expected to keep the job of manager of Ethane for at least another cycle, and all minor tournaments in between. Just missing out on progressing in the Cup of Harmony, he has so far been the 'man of near misses'. With a policy of selecting youthful players, he is looking to create a good team and build it up for the future to be a great team. He is also one that likes to keep things fresh, and regularly replace the relatively old members of the team, leaving only a few to help the younger players, and provide the team with some experience.
