Will you win today, or is something bad about to happen?
I don't know how long I'll be back, but I just thought I'd stop in and say hi, at least.

Winners and Losers
A Column by College Basketball Fanatic Lowell Kimberly, Chromatik City Courier

Things have been heating up in college basketball, and through the myriad of confusing schedules and whatnot, here's what I have to say about the eight schools Chromatika has been fielding:

Winners

1. Z'ai'ai University of Technology - Has gone on a tear lately, winning six in a row. Stephany and Verile have definitely come into form, and are running the system beautifully.
2. Chromatik City College University - Dropped a game, finally, but Bozena and Petronella are still leading a system that is averaging over eighty points per game scored.
3. Pur State University - The Thrall show is real, keeping up his tear of thirty plus points a game.
4. Alnio University of the Arts - Was destroyed by Elmanden College, but then picked back up. Wilhelmina's been a rock.

Losers

1. University of Myana - It's hard to call a three-loss team a "loser", but they did drop three games in the next six. The veteran core is still stable, but they might need some youth?
2. Depri Lanar University - Has gone 5-1 in the last six games, as the girls have come to rely on speed and technique to get past the male squads. Things are definitely looking up.
3. Chromatik State University - Shasta has picked up, but her supporting cast has not.

Middling

1. Depri Sanar University - Again, hard to call a two-loss team "middling", but Lonnie and Shantel have been stopped twice in recent games, and their depth is being questioned.

Still, not a single team with a losing record, it seems that Chromatik schools are proving that they belong in the multi-verse.

NSCAA Report: Cenian Schools, Part One

University of Ceni-Santiago: 8-1
The University of Ceni-Santiago is a true standout: not tapped to be one of the better schools at the beginning of the season. It has the second-highest average points per game of all schools, with just around 93.2 average points per game. Surprisingly, though, it is only second in its conference, with a devastating, close loss to Hankow Community College of United Vietussia proving the club's downfall. This team works extremely well to score points together, with power forward Javier Aiza one of the best players in Cenian schools so far, as he is leading the team in points; José Santillian is also excelling for this team, turning around possession quickly to create many scoring opportunities for this team. This school was not predicted to be a basketball powerhouse, but Xavier Lucas has turned this bunch of mostly home-grown talent into a real force to be reckoned with.

Southpoint Technical College: 6-1
Surprisingly, the Southpoint Technical College is the only Cenian school to remain on top of its college. One of the schools in the south of Ceni specializing in providing technical skills, like plumbing, gardening, or photography, this college went for college basketball earlier than most of the other Cenian schools, but this basketball pioneer had been regarded by many to be one of the worst Cenian schools going around. Not so: Orion Darkstar, the team's sophomore center, has been doing extremely well this season, scoring exceedingly well in the conference, while shooting guard Obran Camasau has led the team's defensive effort, leading the team to concede the least amount of points in its conference by far. This school was a diamond in the rough at the beginning of the season, but it's obvious that coach Julia Lurechia has turned this team into a real fighting force. One of the best games was this team's drubbing of previous group leaders University of Owner-Osity by 24 points, showing the Sword Bloke who's boss.

Cutoff for my conferences.

Matchday 10 contained one the closest finishes in the tournament so far. It was a neck and neck battle between Emperor State University and Universidad Central de Venezuela. Emperor State was ranked fifth in the power rankings of Vannish schools. They were placed under the 2 top ranked schools in their domestic conference, VCA Military Division 1, as well as the top two VCA Military Division schools. The Owls finished their domestic season in third place before the start of NSCAA 7.

UCV seemed to be projected as the top school in Nuevo Caracas.

The game got off to a slow start, with both teams initially coming out playing tough defense and contesting shots. This kept the score low. The first half saw the lead constantly flip back and forth. Emperor State could not build more than a 6 point lead until midway through the second half. As time winded down, UCV made a run of it's own. The score was tied once more with the clock winding down.

The final 4 minutes of the second half was a flurry of activity. UCV players would hit a clutch shot and Emperor State would respond. The ESU Owls were led down the stretch by point guard Wang Xiaopeng, the Chinese national on scholarship. With 10 seconds to go, he faced up to the opposing guard, popped off of his quick first step, doubled back with a crossover that changed his momentum and created space, then let up a floater that banked into the net. This tied the game and sent the teams to overtime.

Regulation's end did not stop the close battle. The lead continued to bounce from team to team.

"Well, UCV had 16 players. We had 12", said ESU coach Karl Limmerick. "The best thing they did for us was place their two tallest players in guard spots. What reason could anybody ever have to have humongous guards at 7'5 (226cm) and 7'8 (233cm)? All that did was let our 6'11 center get rebounds and dunk on UCV's 6'1, 6'6, and 6'3 centers. It was an interesting strategy, but if their lineup was more conventional, we would have lost. We have one of the smallest frontcourts in Vannish basketball, they could have shut us down completely if they weren't trying to be so tricky or fancy."

One of the most exciting plays came when 6'6 forward Gary Jennings caught a pass in the post and threw down a violent two handed slam on UCV's tallest player. Even though the defender was over a foot taller, the Vangazi forward was not intimidated. The Vannish fans rose to their feet.
But Vangaziland was still down by two.

Time was winding down. The Owls made a nice defensive stop and grabbed the rebound. Coach Limmerick called a time out and drew up a play. Small forward Rich Lawssen set a pick for Patrick Hennings, who came off the bench. The shooting guard had a clear shot from behind the three point line. It hit the rim, bounced up vertically and then fell back down through the hoop.

For the rest of the game, the Vannish kept up the defensive pressure and ended up scraping by with a 1-point victory. Wang Xiopeng finished with 9 assists. He also led ESU scoring with 16 points. This was one of the closest matched and hardest fought games of the tournament so far.

NSCAA Report: Cenian Schools, Part 2

Whitehaven Naval Academy: 9-2
Whitehaven Naval Academy was one of the schools with a few decent prospects but not enough as the big schools - this expectation has been exceeded by far. Now the Admirals have extended their 9-2 winning record, but are currently in a big fight with two other universities for the title in the Phoenix Wright conference. In the past few weeks, the Academy has extended its winning streak, including an excellent game against table leaders Blue Coast University, the teamwork between the star point guard Kiana Ke'Sahndrhan and the power forward Solari Sevlaya living up to its potential. The navy really emphasizes leadership and teamwork, and the team doesn't lack this by any measures. Still, though, the team is in tough competition to take home the conference title and championship, and will have to step up its game in the second half of competition in order to prevail against two strong teams also in contention.

University of New Oxford: 7-2
The University of New Oxford, one of the more vaunted schools in the pre-NSCAA analysis, has come back from behind to lead its conference finally. While the school is not leading the conference either in offensive or defensive statistics, the duo of Sara Cenial and Ashur El-Amin have led the team to nonetheless win with large margins in these past few matchdays, including against former leaders UniAnge, and Martin Wiley University, second place as of now, farther back. The team has scraped through in some tight, tense wins, including their 81-80 win over Royal Mareut University, won with an El-Amin buzzer-breater, as well as some more devastating losses, such as the last-minute 67-69 loss to Port Vamosi University. All things evened out, this team has rebounded from its previously mediocre start to truly distinguish itself in this NSCAA competition.

University of Ceni: 5-3
The University of Ceni: one of the best universities in Ceni academically, it attracts quite a few students, both at home and from abroad. It also has the most diverse of the Cenian basketball teams as well, with Harrison and Gaucher-Faubert both coming from abroad, from San Jose Guayabal and Royal Kingdom of Quebec respectively. Pundits have also dubbed the University of Ceni as one of the better Cenian basketball teams pre-NSCAA, with the strong center Gaucher-Faubert promising to do well. Despite a slow start to the season, this team is starting to live up to its potential, with strong wins against Wilson Pickett and Western 98X and a tougher victory against Feldheimer of Jestoria. Coach Lauren Vox hopes to guide her players to win the overall tournament, but it needs to gain ground against its two main rivals, the Andromeda Jedi Academy and the Imperial Military Academy, in order to do that. If Lomax, Vermillion, and Gaucher-Faubert live up to their potential, though, they can become a scoring machine and start to rack up the victories.

Comments from the Chromatiks
Another Column by College Basketball Fanatic Lowell Kimberly, Chromatik City Courier

I have a treat for you today, ladies and gentlemen! I was able to reach one or two players from four of the eight schools of Chromatika in NSCAA 7 and to see what their opinions were about their teams, their opposition, or anything else in general!

Petronella Pajari, Shooting Guard, Freshman, Chromatik City College University (8-1): "It's been pretty tough, playing against players I have never seen in my life, nor heard of. It's been kind of crazy to see that there are more people out there than just from Chromatika. The team is jelling fine, Coach Arts is doing a fine job, the hardest part has been gathering information about the teams that we are facing, some of them don't have much online about their collegiate leagues or whatever. I think we'll do fine, having only one loss so far is decent. Bozena and I will lead this team, carry it, whatever, you know? Just keep on watchin', 'cause the best of the Comets is yet to come."

Verile Simson, Small Forward, Junior, Z'ai'ai University of Technology (7-2): "I have thoroughly enjoyed myself being able to visit different countries in the multi-verse and square elbows with some of the best basketball talent out there. It's definitely been a challenge, don't get me wrong, but the Starting Five have really started to jell together, and we believe we have the bench to win any game. It's all a game of the mind, so I think that whomever is able to learn the most about their opponents, learn and then adept to them, will be able to continue to do well. I do miss playing against other Chromatiks, but I hear that there may still be domestic competition, so that's great."

Levi Overstreet, Center, Senior, University of Myana (6-3): "This is the last season we'll play together as the five of us, so it's been a little intense. I'll admit that sometimes our squad tends to play a bit tense and not loose, not let things flow. There are definitely some very good teams out there in the multi-verse, I think we've been stuck in a small well, thinking we're all high and mighty. Being humbled is the marks of a great team, and we think that our combined knowledge and skill will carry us through at the end. I'm not very happy with our record, but expect better things from us in the future, all right?"

Wilhelmina Guglielmo, Center, Junior, Alnio University of the Arts (6-3): "Oh I have no problem with the competition, or with the format, or whatever. Just excited to go out there and play ball, you know? The better those you play against, the better you'll get, eventually, isn't that right? So I say, bring on the best of the best, let them clash with me, and we'll see what comes out of it. I just like that we're showing that we're not just an arts college, and that we can play ball along with the best of them - sure we're only in third place, but that's going to change in the future, if I can have anything to say about that. Our eyes are on that prize, and we're gonna give all we have to get there. You can bet on it!"

Next time, we'll hear from the other four schools. Until then, keep on supporting Chromatika's colleges!
On that note, cutoff. Tomorrow is another off-day, folks. Results

QUICK RECAP
Since we've seen each other last, a lot has happened. For one, play for the Eternal and Silver Conferences, Drawk Corps' and Corinth City's member conferences, has begun, with very interesting results (while somewhat unexpected). In an interesting turn of events, Drawk Corps has turned out an only decent showing (surely disappointing for its fans), winning 6 out of 8 games, and dropping the other two, one to the San Llera University of Physiology, the only other team ahead of the Corps in the Eternal Conference. Corinth City we'll talk about later, they've had a much better first few games of play.

TOP 5 TEAM LIST
Today our top 5 list is bringing you the best 5 colleges from Drawkland, based on both performance and just how "in control" the team feels on the court.

1. Elmanden District College
And as you may notice by the graphic on the right, the Elmanden District College Mechanors are on the top of the list right now for Drawkland. It's very unprecedented that such a low-ranking Drawkian school would have such a great showing in the NSCAA, especially compared to some difficulties found by some other universities. But it surely has earned its top spot. In the Amaethon Conference, they've gone undefeated for a record 11 games. Not only is Elmanden the only team undefeated for 11 games, they're the only team with 11 wins total, except for the University of Auster of Vangaziland, present in the Master Conference (they have one recorded loss, to Angelou State of The Sword Bloke).

2. Sadeg State University
Last time we met they were the Top Team, and the only reason they've fallen into the number 2 spot is the fact that Sadeg State has been lacking in spirit lately. It's pretty obvious that they're the best in the NSCAA right now, but their crowd hype levels right just can't match up to Elmanden. Elmanden's fueled by rivalry and an underdog position, while Sadeg is just "good." While they still may be open to contention, they're the clear conference favorites - Vietussia A&M is the only team close to them with a 10-2 record, and another list of 2 teams are in with 8-4 records. In other words, Sadeg would have to suffer many injuries, perhaps even actually casualties, to be fully out of the question in the Gravity Conference (Abe Mutton, a Sadeg Guard, severely injured his leg in the game versus Vietussia A&M, but continued to play for another quarter and a half, contributing 12 points afterwards, and started 2 games later against Universidad Chavez). Sadeg State is still a powerhouse, so don't discount their second place placement on this list. We'll probably be flamed in the comments for placing them second anyway.

3. Corinth City University
Corinth City was the other university that ended up having to wait a bit longer than some Drawkian schools alongside Drawk Corps. But they made good use of their extra time apparently, getting tips from other coaches and practicing hard, which of course explains their current 8-0 record in the Silver Conference. Coach Quenton Sev on the situation:
"I am extremely proud of my boys and girls, both on and off the court. The way they've handled this situation is incredibly commendable, and they kicked tons of ass too. As I'd mentioned in the preseason, I'd talked with Cody Morgan about how to face foreign tactics, especially those of The Andromeda Islands, who we played in Matchday 5 in the form of their naval academy. The help was tremendous, and I hope Morgan's proud of our performance. I do feel bad for our late-starting brethren the Drawk Corps however - we were all expecting them to be good. But in the meantime, go Chargers!"

4. Cemmendy Tech
Cemmendy Tech is where we cross the line and descend into "non-undefeated" territory for Drawkian colleges. But it's nothing to sniff at. Since our last compiling, they still have yet to lost another match, after their 4th match loss to St. Joseph's of Vangaziland. To add to that, while they are only second in the group, it's to the same St. Joseph they lost to, and their record is the same, the only reason Cemmendy's below them is their loss to them (and point differential, but pshhh, we know the real reason). It is, however, somewhat infuriating to the fans:
"I can't BELIEVE that we're only a single win behind Elmanden! This is absolutely infuriating, and if we end up losing out of the bracket and Elmanden doesn't, there will be riots on the street. I swear man, that will be the last straw," said one fan on an online comment. Because yeah, there haven't been 407 other last straws in the longstanding Elmanden-Cemmendy rivalry.

5. Metropolon City College
While Metropolon was close to being the top pick earlier in the season, they've sort of dropped a bit of their superiority. While certainly still being a contending force in not only the Big 12 Conference and the NSCAA as a whole, they aren't as top caliber as maybe Sadeg or Elmanden. Many fans are hoping the Generals can hop back into gear to still be a likely inclusion in the final bracket, but who can say? Anyway, I ran out of coffee, so I can't think of anything else to write here.

KEY GAME
Elmanden wouldn't be in their spot without a lot of wins, but one really stands out among the others. Without this game, Elmanden would be in a totally different position with a totally different momentum.

Elmanden District College @ San Llera University of Linguistics, 67-58

As an expected bonus, Here's a recording we got of Elmanden's pep band halftime cadence. The crowd was certainly extremely pumped by it, even though they were on the road in San Llera.

PREDICTIONS

The future has been thrown into disarray by the late entries and the varied results, but two things are clear right now: Elmanden and Sadeg are going to win a whole bunch more. Again, it's inevitable that a loss will happen to one of these teams, but now that both of them have reached the halfway point in the conference and have faced every team at least once, the home stretch is on and they'll be more ready to tackle their opponents. Or will it be the other way around? I dunno, this is the predictions section of a sports article. I'm no soothsayer.
On the next tier of "likely to win a lot" is Corinth City, Cemmendy, and Metropolon. These colleges are not as likely to advance to the final bracket unless they get a lucky shot/draw in the conference championships. But they will certainly prove an important part of their conferences' playing out. And even if they don't get in by winning, they're still good enough to get picked in the At Large berths.
On the lower tier of Drawkian success projections is Emesamie, Notamill, and unfortunately, Drawk Corps. Who knows where they'll go, but on the recently announced inclusion of a top-40 At Large berth for the remaining bracket spots, it's entirely possible a few (hopefully the Corps, amirite?) may even slip into this top list and go on to the bracket.

Here's to another few days of wins for all Drawkian schools!

Emperor Vang Hosts NSCAA 7 Military Appreciation Nights

Image

Emperor Helios Vang made the headlines with a surprise public appearance at Overglade University. He toured the campus, met the men's and women's basketball teams and gave a brief speech. It was his first public appearance in over two years. The Emperor usually stays out of the public eye, as the nation's Parliament and Prime Minister handle the daily business of running the nation.

The student body had a pep-rally for Overglade's NSCAA 7 team in the university's largest auditorium. Emperor Vang praised the school's leaders, students, and faculty for the pride they bring to Vangaziland as the nation's most elite school. But more important than that, Emperor Vang announced that he would be using his personal funds to donate over 35,000 NSCAA prime basketball tickets to Vannish servicemen and women from every service branch, including the Coast Guard. He mentioned that it would take some time to distribute the tickets and that some games were still being determined. These would be Vannish home games located throughout Vangaziland, not just Overglade.

Tickets will be spread across as many units as possible. Units have been asked to nominate a certain amount of troopers that are deserving based on previous awards & medals, dedication to duty, and effort. Enlisted personnel get preference. A limited number of officers up to the rank of 0-3 are accepted.

"If you rank higher than an Army Captain, you can afford to buy your own ticket", joked Emperor Vang, a former military officer himself. There was a mix of laughter and surprise from the crowd as some knew it could be a controversial statement. The Emperor has always made it clear he does not take himself ridiculously seriously.

"I just want all you soldiers to know I truly appreciate you. You deserve to hear that for all you do and have done. I really mean this", said the Emperor. Towards the end of his speech, he hinted "Veterans, don't think I forgot you. IBC 20 is coming up shortly.

The Emperor welcomed other governments to host their own military nights and collaborate in the spirit of fun and goodwill between the international community.

"Don't try to out do me though", he joked to the world's leaders. "I'll just have to buy more tickets then."

Emperor Vang's son, 31 year old Prince Fritjof Vang is currently serving as a major in the Army and is an Overglade University alum. He issued a statement in support of his father's actions.

The Vietussian Inquisitor

Vietussia takes top spots in conferences midway through NSCAA season

In a stunning start, United Vietussia has been able to lay claim to a share or outright lead of 2 conferences, and only two Vietussian teams having a losing record. Vietussians around the nation are rejoicing about the success of Vietussia's college basketball teams, and look forward to the second half of the season.

Let's look at the power rankings. (Only teams with winning records are shown)

1. Hankow Community College (11-1)

Surprise strikes again! A community college finds themselves tied with the University of Ceni-Santiago. The team has done this is dominating fashion, claiming the second highest point differential in their conference. If the success continues, Hankow could find themselves at the top when the NSCAA national tournament rolls around.

2. Vietussia Agricultural and Mechanical (10-2)

The surprises just keep on coming. Vietussia A&M find themselves second in their conference and also with the second highest point differential. Similar to Hankow's situation, just one win shy of being the same.

3. Oigrad University (9-3)

Finally, a known Vietussian school! OU find themselves tied atop their conference with the largest point differential in their conference. Taking the height advantage will be crucial for this team's success.

4. Vietussia Academy (8-4)

Vietussia have found themselves in a tough conference, sitting on top of a good record but only in fourth place. Closing out a few more games in the second half will be beneficial.

5. Oigrad Community College (7-5)

Where does the community college cycle end? Here, at least in Vietussia. Oigrad CC, one of the last teams in, have surprisingly found a way onto the bubble in the beginning of the season. If they continue their success, they can make it on the right side of the bubble.

6. Vietussia Academy at Oigrad (7-5)

When they win, it's close. When they lose, it's a blowout. How do we know? Just look at the -55 point differential. However, maintaining a 7-5 record throughout these blowouts is a remarkable feat, showing grit and determination. That can help this team in a grind very easily.

That'll do it for this edition of the Vietussian Inquisitor. This is Jeb Ports, signing off.
