The Edward H. Whitt Kick-Off Classic will take place one week from today! After long and arduous consideration (aka picked at random) it has been decided that it will pit the University of Blacksburg Silver Foxes against the Saint Haden Catholic University Saints at the historic Harrier Bowl in beautiful downtown Blacksburg! Kick-off is at 8:15 Local Whittoria Time (OOC: Whenever I get to it that day).

Edit: The Kickoff Classic has expanded to include 6 teams for 3 games; it'll be like a Jamboree except a full game instead of 2 halves

Edit: No it hasn't, nevermind

What are the regulations on rosters like a cap on how many players dress, and how many people you can have in one position?

Southerrn Athletic Conference teams shall have no more than 95 players at one time, including redshirts. As many as you like can dress (minus redshirts) and you can have as many people at one position as your style of offense/defense requires. Big Midwest teams must also follow these guidelines

WHITTORIA'S COLLEGIATES TAKE THE FIELD

Mayors, Dakotas, Harriers, and Silver Foxes Ready For Southern Athletic Conference Opener

Story by Jimmy LePage of The Daily Beagle

The day before their season opener against Whitt University, USC @ the Roost head Coach Alex Whitt led his team in a walk through, making sure that assignments were memorized, signals were clear, and going over special teams one final time. He gave a short speech to his team, dismissed them, met with his assistants, and finally stepped into the Media Room at Williams-Brice for a press conference.

Reporter:
"Coach, how is the team? We haven't heard much in the offseason since the end of the World Bowl."

Coach Whitt:
"Well, we've been practicing for about two months now; about seven weeks, I believe; and the team is just fine. Everyone's on the same page as far as assignments go, where people need to be and such, and everyone's healthy. We gave everyone plenty of time to rest after the World Bowl, to get away for a little while. But we're back to business as usual, and the kids are excited to be back on the field again."

Reporter:
"What are your expectations for this season? Last year in the WAIA you went 9-3, and then in the World Bowl you had a little less success."

Coach Whitt:
"I feel good about this year. It won't be easy by any means, we've got just as tough a schedule as anyone else. And other than Blacksburg, Whitt U, and Tuttle we've never played any of these teams. But we returned just about everybody, and for a college team to go 4-4 in a professional football tournament? I'd say that's pretty impressive for a bunch of kids to be able to compete with the world's finest. It'll [this season] definitely be interesting, and if everything goes like we want it to we'll be holding that championship trophy at the end of the year and in the Beagle Bowl."

Meanwhile, just a half hour from Columbia, the Whitt University Harriers were putting the finishing touches on their week. Walking towards Strom Thurmond Stadium, Head Coach Skip McHoltz, the greatest middle school football coach of all time, had this to say:

Reporter:
"Coach McHoltz, how does the team look for this year?"

Coach McHoltz:
"We're excited. It's been a long offseason of recruiting and voluntary workouts, but the players are ready to be back out on the field and tear it up."

Reporter:
"How has the team prepared for the season opener against the Roost? It's not often you play one of your rivals in the season opener."

Coach McHoltz:
"No, it's not. We usually don't play USCR until the middle or near the end of the season, and this will definitely be our first test. We graduated a lot of players from last year, so we'll be looking for our younger guys to step up. We just keep doing what we've been doing."

Reporter:
"If this year ends well will you get a contract extension?"

Coach McHoltz:
"I'm not concerned too much about that right now. My primary focus is getting this team into a bowl game by season's end. I can assure you, though, I'll be head coach of the Harriers for a long time."

The state of affairs is more tense in Blacksburg, Pulaski, where Brandon Stokley is in the hot seat after a dismal 2-10 campaign last time around. Stokley could not be reached for comment, but released a press statement where he said "major changes" had taken place since last season, and that this year looked "the best of any Silver Fox season" that he could recall. After winning the Edward H. Whitt Kickoff Classic against St. Haden Catholic, things seem to be headed in the right direction. But there's a whole lot of football to play.

In Redfield, South Dakota, Ed Harris (of no relation to the actor), the most celebrated coach in modern WAIA history, met with the press at the media room in Van Brocklin Stadium.

Reporter:
"Coach you open the season against Greater St. Haden. Are the players ready?"

Coach Harris:
"They are. These kids have been hungry to get back out on the field after losing the [Little 11] Conference by two points last year."

Reporter:
"Coach, what about the rivalry game with the Roost? How will you prepare for the Mayors' hybrid attack?"

Coach Harris:
"Our primary concern right now is Greater St. Haden. We'll worry about USCR when that week rolls around."

Reporter:
"Coach, how healthy are the players, particulary Red Michaels?"

Coach Harris:
"Overall we're healthy. Red pulled a hamstring a few weeks ago, and while his hamstring has improved a lot I wouldn't expect him to be on the field covering receivers for the first one. But we'll see how it goes."

So with hours remaining until kickoff, Whittoria's finest suit up to take on other teams around the conference (and the various independents). This year will be exciting, so get out and cheer your teams on Whittoria!

MAYORS CAN'T HOLD ON, DROP FIRST TWO

Crosstown rivals just too much for USCR to handle; Defense dominates in Tharmenstein State OT game

Story by Jimmy LePage

The Mayors just couldn't hang on to a first half lead last week in Strom Thurmond Stadium, giving up 14 points in the second half, and this week wasn't much better. The first home game of the year was a defenseive battle all 60 minutes, and a stadium record 11 interceptions (12 turnovers total) were thrown in a 6-0 OT loss to Tharmenstein State.

"The Whitt U game is one you hate to lose, they're our rivals and there's so little distance between the two schools, and to lose the game in the second half is just frustrating," said Mayors head coach Alex Whitt. "We lost that game in the third quarter."

Indeed, as the Mayors held a 10-0 lead going into the locker room on a 34 yard field goal from Jeffrey Miller and a thrilling 74-yard touchdown pass to David Amos, USCR couldn't seem to get it together in the second half. The Harriers first score came on a an Evan Tyler scramble into the endzone with 13:27 left in the third quarter, and after a Tom Anderson field goal the game was tied at 10. As the thrid quarter came to an end Whitt U scored again on a 13 yard pass from Ryan Melton to Chet Musgrave, taking a lead they would not relenquish. The Mayors fought back but the Harrier defense was just too tough.

"We couldn't get any offense going; we emphasize finish, finish, finish, and for us to come out and play flat in the second half like we did is just unexcusable."

O-Coordinator Zach Whitt credited the Harrier defense as well as the Mayors' lack of focus:
"You gotta give Whitt University credit, they played tough defense. But we're better than what we showed tonight."

"They capitalized on our mistakes on defense," said D-coordinator Joe Nave. "We played solid in the first have but had three critical errors in the third quarter, and by the time we corrected them it was too late."

Spirits were much higher on the other sideline, however.

"How about these guys!" exclaimed head coach Skip McHoltz. "We started out slow but boy we played hard in the second half. I'm real proud of our players and coaches; we did all the things we needed to do to win tonight, and to beat your rival is definitely huge."

In week 2 the Mayors couldn't defend their own turf. Starting QB Cory Lawson (RS Senior) threw for more interceptions than he did pass completions, 3-2, before going down early in the second quarter with a concussion; he's expected to be out for at least 2-3 weeks. Back-up Eddie Mitchell's two picks added to the Mayor's woes.

"This was just an awful game," said Coach (Alex) Whitt. "Our defense played great, we had, what, six interceptions and a forced fumble we got? But we just couldn't pull ourselves together late in the game."

Upon being asked what was causing the Mayors' poor play, Coach Whitt responded "If I knew I'd tell you. Lack of focus? Probably has something to do with it. Whatever it is we're going to run it out of them; this week is gonna be fun.

Defense was a major factor in this week's game, intercepting 6 passes and forcing a fumble keeping TS out of the endzone for all four quarters. But overtime was the Roost's downfall. TS won the toss and elected to go on defense first. On the Mayors' first play from scrimmage Eddie Mitchell threw his second pick of the game, putting USCR in the hole (although he did make the tackle to keep the defender from running the pick back).

But one play later Tharmenstein State put the nails in the coffin, scoring on a 25 yard touchdown run, silencing the 84,000 fans in attendence.

"By next Saturday they'll be so pissed from these past 2 games and practice this week we oughta whip the piss out of Blacksburg."

Hopefully so. Fortunately Whitt U and Tharmenstein State are independents, so while the Mayors may have two losses they are still in the SAC title hunt. The Beagle Bowl may be out of reach unless the Mayors win out, and even then they might get the Piton Bowl or Harrier Bowl at best.

But time will tell

First game:
FPI 6 0 7 0 13
MCU 7 7 0 7 21

Second game
MCU 7 6 3 6 22
IFU 6 7 7 0 20

Cabbies off to a flying start!
Mulcahey City University can be very proud of its football team. The Cabbies are competing as an independent in this competition, and have succesfully defeated the first two opponents.

FPI from the eastern division was beaten by 21-13, a touchdown early in the fourth quarter deciding this game in favor of the Cabbies.

The second game, against IFU from the western division was also won, 22-20 in a very exciting and tight game. MCU took an early lead with a first drive touchdown, but IFU responded in the first quarter with two field goals, and took the lead in the second uarter with a touchdown of their own. The Cabbies too scored a touchdown but kicker Chase Dentremont could not convert the PAT when holder John Pinkowski bobbled the snap in a way of which even planet earth's Tony Romo would be ashamed.

IFU got a 20-13 lead early in the 3rd quarter off an interception when Cabbies QB Stuart Frain mis-aimed his pass to wide receiver Steve Surratt. A field goal got the Cabbies back to 20-16. And this remained the score until the two minute warning in the fourth quarter. Then it was a brilliant playaction move that suddenly saw Mark Bernardino completely free to run in a 62 yard touchdown. This gave the Cabbies a 22-20 lead. Head coach Hank Kingsley, for some reason, decided to go for two but this failed spectaculary as quarterback Frain was sacked on the play. But the Cabbies held on for the win as IFU were out of timeouts and the clock ran out on their drive.

Attention all SAC teams and Independents:

Due to the tragic terrorist attacks that shook Whittoria today, results will be postponed one matchday. Please exercise patience as we are on lockdown for 24 hours, and perhaps together we can all be united through the recent course of events.

(OOC: I'm away from my computer and NSFooty files until tomorrow, and then we'll resume. This'll give everyone some time to catch up on those RP's, too)

The Mayor of Whittoria speaks at a press Conference from Blacksburg, Whittoria, 1 day after terrorist attacks on the rail system:

"Good evening. I come before you now under the gravest of circumstances.

Around 8:15 Standard Whittoria Time yesterday morning, a series of coordinated attacks occurred in our capital city of Blacksburg. Three trains, two in the city at public stations and a third en route on the South Dakota Rail and Transit Line just outside of the city exploded. In a moment more suddenly than one could prepare himself for suicide bombers under disguise detonated their explosives at exactly the same time. The two in the city killed over 200 people, and the toll is still rising from what I understand; it is unknown now why the third train was not in the city at the same time, but from what our early reports suggest there was a delay in its departure from Redfield, SD.

After 24 hours of complete national lockdown and early intelligence reports we have determined the group responsible for these attacks. We are now going to pursue these murderers with a veangence, and they will be brought to justice. We are not going to release any details on who it is or what we are planning; we've learned from the mistakes of our distant neighbors to the east (ooc: for those who don't know Whittoria is smack dab in the middle of the Atlantic), and we feel our current plan is the safest for our people.

I understand that the commissioner and founder of the Southern Athletic Conference and its independents is Whittorian. For the past 24 hours our country came to a halt, and there were football games that four of our colleges and universities were to play in that were postponed. Mr. Commissioner I say to you: continue your conference season. Continue it as a sign that no matter what the people of Whittoria and this great nation cannot be stopped, that freedom, OUR freedom will never falter under any circumstance. I ask, I BESEECH you, continue your season of this great game, so that our nation and all those affected can have something pure to look forward to, so that they might have hope.

Today is truly a sad day in our nation's history, and the world's as well. Let us not fall victims to these horrible acts, as it weakens us and shows we are the weaker; nay, I say, let us all be united in our strength. Please keep the victims and the families of the victims in your hearts and prayers. We will keep you updated. Thank you, and good night.

SAC PLAY TO CONTINUE TODAY AFTER ATTACKS

Whittoria teams will fight on; some players affected by tragedy

Story by Jimmy LePage

It's been a long week since the terrorist attacks in Blacksburg, and despite tragic loss the SAC teams are ready to begin play again.

It won't be easy.

Some of the players playing today lost family members in the attacks. Terry Hamilton, wide receiver for the Tuttle College Dakotas, lost his uncle on the SDRTL train just outside of Blacksburg.

"It's such a terrible thing," said Coach Ed Harris. "Our guys have been there for him though. The team is pulling together even moreso than before trying to help him get through this, and the coaches too. We're just trying to be there for him.

"Whether he plays saturday or not is his decision, and either way we support him."

In a more tragic circumstance USCR defensive end James Broome lost both parents in the attacks.

"This is so horrible," said Coach Whitt tuesday. "He's such a great kid, and it's absolutely horrific that this could happen to a kid like him. James is such a hard worker, and he was very close to his family from what he told me. It's just so sudden; sad doesn't even begin to describe this.

"I told him if he felt he should play this weekend or if he felt otherwise was up to him, and either way we support him. He told me he wanted to play, that his parents would want him to continue on. He's playing for more than just a championship now; he's playing for his parents."

The Mayors play Blacksburg at home tonight, while Whitt U travels to Florida Tech in Old Cola and Tuttle College had Toiletdonia at home.
