Copa Rushmori XXI

Welcome to the Copa Rushmori XXI, for all your Rushmori participants and insatiable need for Rushmori international competition. As you may have noticed already, this edition is to be hosted right here in Norrehavn, the land of culture and nature, and we hope you enjoy your time in this country of turbulent terrains and proud peoples.

Before opening this sign up thread, I looked at past few Copa Rushmoris and decided that team liaison officers, who were there to represent and help the teams with whatever they need or to be sacrificed in a secret ceremony, will make a comeback to this Copa Rushmori.

To quote Polar Islandstates, who hath given us very generously detailed information about them:
...all nations taking part will have a "Team Liaison Officer" who you may take as written is a junior official or work experience kid in the FPIFA who has been trained to speak your nation's language fluently and can act as an interpreter or what have you. Should you wish to RP them as one of the background characters you will have full GodMod powers over them beyond the name/age/gender I give you. Blame them for bad results, paint them as some kind of latter day saint, kill them and throw them in the team jacuzzi as an offer to your gods, whatever. It'd be up to you how much to include them, if at all. There will be no penalty for not including them, they are just there as a catalyst should you want/require one.

They are as followed:

1. Valladares- Camilla Višňovska-Nielsen (30, female)
2. Darmen- Lukas Višňovský (61, male)

MANAGERIAL STAFF
Manager: Lydie
In her second qualifying campaign in charge of the Purple Knights it wasn't quite as close to a success for Lydie. Her first Copa Rushmori showed the signs of the impending failure in qualification that the Knights saw. Now may have hope that in her second run in charge at the Copa she can lead Taeshan to glory in the region. This starts with the team continuing to grow together as for the most part much of the defense has only been together for a season or so and that in the upcoming games they will hopefully mesh for their next year.

Assistant Manager: Elijah Knickerbocker
Elijah Knickerbocker has stuck around even though he continues to want nothing to do with the main national team managerial position.

GOALKEEPERS

1 - Myung Wook Yu- Bayern-Algaer 19 Caps, 28 Years Old
It has been a Baptism of Fire for the young Taeshani defense and no man has been more at risk to the flame than the goalie. He has been an interesting piece of the puzzle and hopefully he can continue to improve and reach new heights.

12 - Nick Garden - Kylde (Cosumar) 15 Caps, 31 Years Old
Garden has been somewhat revitalized by his move away from Taeshan and continues to be an interesting puzzle as to why he still lets himself come into international camps knowing full well he wont play.

24 - Xavier Troubador - Fadron Flight 0 Caps, 20 Years Old
Troubadour looks ready to make some starts if Wook Yu messes up, and seems ready at any moment to lead the young Knights defense.

DEFENDERS

2 - LB, William Bloomsbury - Bayern-Algaer 19 Caps, 25 Years Old
Bloomsbury has continued the long tradition of great Taeshan left backs and with his speed and play making many see him as the real key piece to putting Taeshan back on the world soccer map.

3 - CB, Cody Brahms - Atlantea Hurricanes 19 Caps, 28Years Old
Brahms might be a tad bit too old for the group he is a part of, but that hasn't stopped him from being a part of it and helping possibly return Taeshan to its former heights.

4 - CB, Orion Black - Eastweald (Cosumar) 19 Caps, 24 Years Old
Orion Black is a strong center back and he continues to be a nice piece and likely star for the Knights.

5 - RB, Benedict Broadway - Fadron Flight 19 Caps, 25 Years Old
The right back for the Taeshani's has had a rather interesting past few seasons in the league and now as he continues to be on the national team many wonder if he will move from Fadron considering they have continued to fail in their bid to win the league.

20 - Alan Testudio - Atlantea Hurricanes 2 Caps, 25 Years Old
Testudio managed two caps during qualifying and now he seems to be the biggest center back on the bench and will likely see a lot of action if they need defensive help.

21 - Andrew Chesnut - Los Riosa Monstas 0 Caps, 21 Years Old
Andrew Chesnut is a nice center back piece for the roster and many see him as doing a lot in the upcoming years for the national team, but he likely won't see a lot of action in the upcoming season.

22 - Maxwell McMichael - Knightspurs 1 Cap, 23 Years Old
The fullback option on the bench continues to be Maxwell McMichael.

MIDFIELDERS

6 - RM, Billy York - 1093 Club de Atlantea 14 Caps, 1 Goal, 28 Years Old
Billy York has continued to play strong in the league and the success of his club has been the proof of that pudding. If he can manage that form in international play the team could turn itself around in the coming campaigns.

7 - CM, Isaac Benoit - Real Atlantea 25 Caps, 27 Years Old
Benoit has proven to be a nice part of the Taeshani midfield and he continues to impress on the field. His club side recently made a run to the semi-finals of the Champions' Cup and he is one of the main reasons.

8 - CM, Lysander Ying Uing - Bayern Phoenix 74 Caps, 4 Goals, 28 Years OldCaptain
Lysander Ying Uing is the leader of the team and he shows it with his skill. His club side has not seen as much success as of late, but overall he continues to be the leader of the national team.

9 - LM, Alex Guggenheim -Red Star Severny (Polar Islandstates) 36 Caps, 1 Goal, 29 Years Old
On the left side of midfield Alex Guggenheim has been a key part of his club team and has seen success in the international scene. With this possibly being his last Copa he may hope to make a lasting impact on the cup.

10 CAM, Brett Toulanlan - Canalave Dragons (Valladares) 42 Caps, 5 Goals, 29 Years Old
At the center of the Taeshani attack is Brett Toulanlan who has been an important piece of the Taeshani midfield for years and many think that this upcoming few seasons is his time to shine.

15 - Ignatius Thaddeus - Bayern-Algaer 5 Caps, 26 Years Old
Ignatius is the best midfielder off the bench and will likely see a bit of time in this tournament.

16 - Ansel Bone - Iskara Daii (Starblaydia) 1 Cap, 25 Years Old
Ansel is in one of the best leagues in the world and for one of the most historic sides in history.

17 - Dietrich Baden - Real Chinchinhua 1 Cap, 25 Years Old
Baden will not likely see the field a lot.

18 - Josmer Medici - FC Burgess (Calanian Union) 2 Caps, 25 Years Old
Josmer is the second person off the bench in the midfield and will see a lot of time as a winger.

19 - Asher Victorious - Taeshan City Miners 1 Cap, 23 Years Old
Victorious likely won't see the field a lot.

STRIKERS

11 - RS, Xander McDrew - Bayern Phoenix 68 Caps, 35 Goals, 27 Years Old
The biggest threat to score for this team is Xander McDrew and he is a boss on the field and off.

13 - Javier Yon - Ojian Orangemen, 21 Caps, 5 Goals, 26 Years Old
Yon is the best striker on the bench and will likely see the field a lot, especially if the Knights are down.

14 - Peter Wiggin - Blacklake Blues 12 Caps, 24 Years Old
Wiggin is the second man off the bench.

23 - Val Valjean - Real Atlantea 0 Caps, 23 Years Old
Valjean might see the field one day.

ICELFA Roster for Copa Rushmori 22

Demonym: Eastfielder

Eastfield Lodge is a pretty glorious nation, somewhat situated in Northern Rushmore - in reality, there's a very small island (acting as a transport hub) which hosts a portal linking the NSverse to a small bubble universe, wherein the rest of the Imperial Commonwealth is located (barring a couple of nations, but they’re linked up in other ways). The IC part describes the fact that there are several empires contained within one superstructure – divisions which are somewhat reflected in the convoluted league structure.

Those of you who know this nation well however will wonder what has happened to the Whoniverse (the universe of Doctor Who, the TV programme). Don’t worry, I will (hopefully) RP what went on. To those who don’t know, this nation used be in the NSverse, but due to the acts of a lone madman from The Holy Empire (mad, or pitiful, the legends are a bit shaky), Eastfield Lodge almost vanished from existence, leaving behind a small island (now in Rushmore), attached to a portal connecting here to the Whoniverse. Things happened, the portal became unstable, and we had to form a bubble universe, and as a result, the resulting temporal shockwave both wiped out all electronic records, and did some weird stuff to people’s ages (hence why some names in the team may seem recognisable).

Anyways, because of the initial portal, whilst humans are the overwhelming majority of the populace here, don't be surprised to find several other races and much advanced technology here. Some more historical information can be found here, in lieu of a factbook (NB: a lot of the information there is inaccurate though, TG me for clarification).

Back to the nation itself, Eastfield Lodge is probably the best place to live in the entirety of Rushmore, according to the WA at any rate. Amongst the accolades heaped upon are: Most Compassionate Citizens, Most Beautiful Environments, Happiest Citizens, Most Dedicated Public Healthcare, Healthiest Citizens, Least Corrupt Government, Longest Average Lifespan, Lowest Crime Rates, Nicest Citizens, Largest Public Transportation Department, Safest, Smartest Citizens, Most Popular Tourist Destinations, Best Weather and Largest Welfare Programs. Also of note is the fact that, in a region containing Saintland, Eastfield Lodge is the Most Devout nation, with Islam being the national religion, and that we have the Highest Police Ratios, so do not be alarmed by the sheer number of police officers.

Lodger City Memorial Stadium
Location: New Lodger City
Capacity: 150,000
Description: The home of Eastfielder football, the stadium was built on the ruins of the old capital of Eastfield Lodge, Lodger City, which was flattened in a double disaster (severe floods from dams bursting and an explosion from an unknown source, killing much of the population of the city and rendering the city useless. Administrative functions were transferred over to Lodgertia, the city began to be rebuilt, and it was decided that this stadium would be one of the monuments erected in place. The inside walls contains inscriptions of the names of all the dead – just under 9 million. The stadium currently plays host to the two classic giants of EL football – RGS Athletic and VLC FC, at least until both have their new stadium plans approved. For the purposes of ‘fairness’ (with the rest of the league), the attendance is limited to 100,000 for league games, but is maxed for the cup games of both sides, and the final is played here as well.

Parliament Stadium
Location: Lodgertia
Capacity: 80,000
Description: The second largest stadium in Eastfield Lodge, behind the Memorial Stadium in New Lodger City, it was built in the centre of Lodgertia, the capital of Eastfield Lodge, and the Imperial Commonwealth. It was named due to the fact that the Parliament is based just a few hundred metres down the road; in fact, the original stadium was actually joined to the Parliament building, as an area where MPs could watch or even engage in sport with the public, as well as being a designated protest site. However, with Lodgertia becoming more built up, it was decided that the stadium needed to be built up as well. It is home to Lodgertia United and Lodgertia City alongside being temporary hosts of RGS Athletic and VLC FC (when Lodger City was being rebuilt), and in the past has hosted several international matches, including the final of SBCC 27 and a group in both stages of Market Cup 4.

Manager: Lowell Brown
Age: 50. Manager of Seaton Town, Brown is known in Eastfield Lodge for being one of the fairest and impartial managers in the top flight - if his team were lucky with a decision, he will not claim otherwise. Has managed on the international scene previously, being put in charge of both the men’s and women’s Olympic football teams, featuring most of the players selected for the qualifying campaign.
Coach: Shabeen Ahmad III
Age: 55. He went down in Eastfield Lodge history as having scored over 200 goals for the EL national team (a record that will stand for a long time since all other records since then have been wiped). Still an inspiration to everyone and even at this age his skill is noticeable, even if his agility has waned. He has been the main offensive coach for several World Cups now.

Goalkeepers:
Veronica Puppy (Age 23, F; Club: VLC FC)
Dennis Wood (Age: 29, M; Club: RGS Athletic)
Gavin Mintson (Age: 24, M; Club: Norrion Rovers)

Defenders:
Dylan Bell Jnr (Age: 21, M, Club: VLC FC, Position: CB)
Charlie Richardson (Age: 28, M, Club: VLC FC, Position: CB)
Juan Lumo (Age: 22, M, Club: Olympia FC, Position: CB)
Oliver Testerman (Age: 28, M, Club: RGS Athletic, Position: CB)
Abdur Rehman (Age: 21, M, Club: RGS Athletic, Position: RB)
Robyn Summers (Age: 26, F, Club: Olympia FC, Position: RB)
Darlene Finn (Age: 24, F, Club: Norrion Rovers, Position: LB)
Hamaad Siddique (Age: 17, M, Club: VLC FC, Position: LB)

Midfielders:
Daniel Keeble (Age: 24, M, Club: UR Town, Position: DM)
Dennis Jagger (Age: 30, M, Club: RGS Athletic, Position: DM)
The Doctor (Age: God Knows, M, Club: Unaffiliated, Position: AM/ST/Pretty much anywhere else outfield)
Waleed Saqib (Age: 20, M, Club: VLC FC, Position: AM)
Juan Sandro (Age: 29, M, Club: Seaton Town, Position: AM)
Leah Todrington (Age: 21, F, Club: FC Tavernia, Position: AM)

Wingers/Forwards
Roman Qwivotic (Age: 26, M, Club: Norrion Rovers, Position: LW/RW/ST)
Fedrea Quazin (Age: 19, F, Club: RGS Athletic, Position: RM/LM)
Tirs Rathun (Age: 18, M, Club: Norrion Rovers, Position: LM/RM)
Georgina Wadimu (Age: 21, F, Club: RGS Athletic, Position: RM)
Thomas Graham (Age: 25, M, Club: CSKA Quebec (RKQ, recently transferred from Norrion Rovers), Position: ST)
Tia Drenas (Age: 20, F, Club: RGS Athletic, Position: ST)

Formation: 4-1-2-3
Image

The formation is a weird variant on the classic basic 4-3-3. Here, there is the one holding midfielder, and the other two are pushed up to play just off the ST as attacking midfielders, whilst the WFs are also slightly tucked in from a usual position. This allows them more of an equal choice of either cutting in or going out wide for the cross, which may be met by the other winger or one of the midfielders. The front five can drift to other positions at any time, just to keep defences on their toes. Defensively, the AMs will drop back and slightly out wide or into the middle as required, and are decently proficient at dispossessing the ball and using it well. The DM is mainly there to guard the defence, and is adept at picking out a pass (short or long), and helping to dictate plays. The CBs are as standard, but the FBs are given the freedom to roam forwards as far as they can get away with, and more often than will get involved in attacking plays, with some crosses from both deep and closer in.
In terms of goal scoring, the ST will get the bulk of the goals, with good contributions from both the AMs and the WFs as well. The WFs will get most of the assists, followed closely by the AMs, then the ST and DM.

Give out yellow cards to my players: Y (maximum five, TG me with a reason for more)
Give out red cards to my players: Y (only one more than the number given to your team, maximum of three - i.e. I get two red cards, you must have at least one)
RP injuries to my players: Y (Maximum 3, no career-ending injuries without my explicit permission - TG me if you want to RP injuries longer than 3 MDs)
Godmod injuries: Y (within reason)
Godmod scoring events: Y (Have fun.)
Godmod other events: Y (TG me if you're planning on killing anybody though, or anything really extreme.)

If I do RP, I will include the line-up for the next match in my RP post, along with any suspensions/injuries. If there is no line-up, look through my posts and check for current suspensions/injuries, but otherwise it’s fine. Also, if you're RP'ing any part of my match, please use the full name Eastfield Lodge at least once, it helps me find the RP.

NB: As the people of EL are extremely compassionate, and very civilised (despite what you may say about the religion), it would be uncharacteristic for the coaches/players to lose their temper, dive deliberately (jumping out of the way of bad tackles and falling awkwardly doesn't count), to be sent to the stands (if the ref is clearly very biased however...), spit, argue with the ref or fight. Players will also tend to inform the referee about mistakes/clarifications in judgement regarding throw-ins, fouls given but with no contact and goal kicks/corner kicks (plus other bouts of honesty - up to you).

PRAVENNA
Preferred Formation:
4-1-4-1
Style Modifier: -2
Playstyle: Defensive, counter-attacking side, very much aware of their status as underdogs.
Kit Supplier: Cloaker
Nickname: The Lions

Pravenna is a sun-blazed rock in the middle of nowhere, vaguely in Rushmori waters. It is a benevolent dictatorship - or, at least, young General Augustine Mitrosaridis is more concerned with golden statues of himself and various glamour projects than oppressing the common folk. The latest project has been the restoration of a football association wracked with corruption, incompetence and neglect, and somehow - despite the refusal of both UICA and the WCC to have anything to do with them - has actually started to almost approach respectability.

Tactics
Image
First-choice lineup.

Staff
Manager: Constantine Katsaros
Asst. Manager: Ange Katsaros

Balancing duties of the national team with the new MPL side, Augustinople Saints, Katsaros largely has the nation in his debt. A doughty, hard-bitten sort who feels confident he can get the best out of any player, his results so far have been nothing short of extraordinary. That experience with the Saints has given him the confidence to try the marginally more adventurous, less compact 4-1-4-1 formation with the Pravennan national team. The only question is, how long is he staying?

Goalkeepers
1 - GK - Anastasia Stasinopolous - Age 30 - Augustinople Saints (PRV)
12 - GK - Perseus Theoklitos - Age 22 - Crawford City FC (COS)
20 - GK - Evangelos Tsakiris - Age 26 - Augustinople Saints (PRV)

An incorruptible leader and captain of the Saints, Stasinopolous is a useful shot-stopper despite her career not really going to plan in her first professional stint, in Jeckland. Theoklitos is expected to start after his experience in the Cosumar league, a regular starter for Crawford despite his youth even if he has struggled to fill the boots of his predecessor. Tsakiris has been a backup his entire career, and his single cap came in a 6-0 friendly defeat to Brenecia.

Defenders
2 - RB - Athan Lekas - Age 33 - Augustinople Saints (PRV)
3 - LB - Demetrios Constantinou - Age 23 - Stalliongrad (EQS)
5 - CB - Augustine Rouphos - Age 26 - AS Cadillac (FEL)
6 - CB - Eudoxia Tzavaras (c) - Age 32 - Coret Hawks (NPH)
13 - LCB - Stern Katsalidis - Age 28 - Augustinople Saints (PRV)
17 - RB - Penelope Karassalidis - Age 24 - Brookford Otters (BRE)
21 - CB - Claire Demetrios - Age 21 - Goteborg FF (FEL)

The defence has in the past been the basis of Pravennan success has a bit of a patchwork feel now as it transitions to a flat four. The veteran Lekas is expected to battle it out with Nepharim immigrant Karassalidis (who speaks Greek at home but has never set foot in Pravenna before) on the right, a likely weak point of the squad. But the strength of its centrebacks should stead it well - Rouphos and especially the indomitable Tzavaras have been regulars from the start. Katsalidis, a senior figure for the Saints who has spent most of his career as a squad player in the A-League for South Rathia, can fill in at leftback, but Constantinou offers more going forward. Demetrios favours the role of a sweeper, like Rouphos, but the keenly-intelligent Goteborg defender looks like the eventual successor in the heart of defence to Tzavaras.

A packed defence that will consider itself ready to take on all-comers. Tzavaras is the star of the defence, a Premiership-hardened centreback with Coret, while she's likely to partner either Stavros or Katsalidis - both decent, neither anything special. Sgouros, fourth-choice, is something of an oddity - but despite only winning a professional contract at 25, she's established herself as a strong defender... in the fourth tier. But she stood up just as firm as the rest last Copa. Either of two Felix-based sweepers will protect the goalkeeper behind them - roughly even in talent, but Rouphos that significant bit more seasoned. Merochite and Constantinou on the wings both have an attack-minded bent - Merochite's a right midfielder by trade - but they will not hesitate to go back and defend if they have to.

Midfielders
4 - DM - Juliet Vatskalis - Age 31 - Augustinople Saints (PRV)
7 - RM - Zoe Merochite - Age 32 - Rosbank Town (BRE)
8 - CM - Dorcas Merochite - Age 25 - Ritter Town (NPH)
11 - LM - Kostas Postecoglou - Age 23 - Iron City (NPH)
15 - CM - Calisto Matraxis - Age 25 - Vermillion Wanderers (NPH)
18 - LM - Angelos Souvanis - Age 22 - Augustinople Saints (PRV)
19 - DM - Niko Karachanis - Age 20 - Port Argos Phalanx (PRV)
22 - CM - Philippa Costas - Age 30 - Augustinople Saints (PRV)
23 - RM - Vasilis Panagakos - Age 23 - Augustinople Saints (PRV)

Massive overhauls, and probably the weakest area of the team. Vatskalis compensated for her flagging pace with several excellent performances in the MPL, Zoe Merochite finally gets the chance to play her favoured right midfield role having been a mainstay at wingback until this point, her unrelated namesake in central midfield is a quick and capable playmaker. Matraxis is the heart of the team, a Premiership-level runner with not so much in the way of technical ability. Postecoglou's career has benefited from being pushed upfield, and this will be a massive test for him. Depth is a major weakness, with Karachanis the only semi-professional left in the squad and none of the remaining Saints being regular starters.

Forwards
9 - ST - Theo Michaels - Age 27 - Augustinople Saints (PRV)
10 - ST - Isadora Xenophon - Age 31 - Francisca Orient (BRE)
14 - ST - Theseus Barbarouses - Age 22 - Project +90 (NPH)

Mostly unchanged. Journeyman striker Michaels has found his feet in the forgiving MPL3, being almost ridiculously white-hot and averaging close to a goal a game. The composed, experienced Xenophon nets one-in-three in the A-League and is probably the better choice, but her pace isn't what it once was. Barbarouses is unproven at a high standard, but makes for a towering target man and a more than capable Plan B.

Kits

Image
Home - Away - Reverse

The squad from New Ponyville will wear the same kit design used at the last Copa Rushmori. Kits for humanoid players (see above), as well as those for equine and other non-humanoid players, are provided by Generosity Sportswear of the Equestrian States. The New Ponyville kits were designed to be easily-recognizable, utilizing the purple, orange, and white color scheme that is widely associated with the Equestrian States and its overseas colonies, though New Ponyville's kits emphasize the white to a greater degree than those of the Equestrian national team.

On Species and Equestrian Hoofball
The Equestrian States is a nation of incredible diversity. When many countries make this kind of statement, they are referring only to racial matters dealing with differences in skin color or culture. But the Equestrian States takes diversity to a whole new level, with dozens of sapient species living alongside each other in harmony. From pegasai to griffons, and humans to dragons, the Equestrian States is among the most diverse nations known to exist. But diversity has also had a unique and intriguing impact on the playing of sports in the Equestrian States, and hoofball is no exception. In the following paragraphs, the natural strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies of each prominent species in the Equestrian States will be explored, offering those unfamiliar with the Equestrian States a chance to explore the wonderful diversity that makes the Equestrian States a great country and gives our beloved national hoofball team a versatility that few others can hope to match.

Stvoto Latoli's Copa Rushmori 21 Squad Released

Stvoto Latoli must walk on with hope in their heart after a devastatingly poor second-ever cycle in World Cup Committee-sanctioned events. Struggling to find the back of the net perhaps more than any other team in the world, it was well known that manager Brendan al Tameer was expected to make big changes or find a new employer. The Arab-Irishman cooperated duly with the TSLB, totally re-jiggering the team for the Rushmori regional championship, this year in Norrehavn. The side is more technical and has more attacking threats, but it is physically weaker and physically smaller (especially in defense, which is worrying), and most notably of all, the Golden Crows' average age has skyrocketed. This team of veterans may be wise, but fitness is likely to be an uphill struggle.

Also interesting to observe is that the so-called Big Three of Stvoto Latolisi club football have radically increased their share of the pie, as it were. It is now the case that a whopping eighteen of the twenty-two men and one woman in this squad are contracted to one of Brewers, Lobyu, or Vezhidrupa, more than three quarters... and all of the starting lineup is from that triad, too. Given that the Big Three seem to have acquired stranglehold on the rest of Gu Zhahogowdoo, there are no real shocks about it, but to see things change so rapidly is a bit unusual.

Shyusoolootru Lyu is one of the few things unchanged about the Golden Crows. He retains his captaincy after yet another very good year (though his Vezhidrupa could not repeat as top flight champions). Ahead of him will be a veteran teammate of Lyu's at the All-Whites, Manu Uchatheppujaghu, and Lobyu's vaunted back line will contribute two starters as well: the previously out-of-favor duo of Leagh Gilmore and Muhammad abd al Raziq walk back into the Stvoto Latoli first team. Ahead, Satatu Bei makes good on his seemingly-now-ancient vow to return to the Gold-Whites' eleven, joined by Brewers teammate and now national-team-stalwart holding midfielder Jabbar al Amri. Numair al Farran's powerful athleticism will be used on the left wing, while Usama O'Bearga's vision, long-distance passing, and dribbling skill will grace the right. Up top, new target man Beolagh Athey will be supported by two more Chartreuse-Oranges playmakers: Heji'šagheru Eji will function as something of an enganche, slightly more withdrawn and slightly less mobile than his role in Caisleán Luaith, and Nataliaja Irmedheghi will redouble her efforts as the Maritime Empire's trequartista.

Brendan al Tameer - 48 Years Old
Mr. al Tameer has Arab-Irish ethnicity and has Muzira'a Ba'aydi nationality.

Fun-loving, boisterous, and media-friendly, it might come as a surprise to an outsider that Stvoto Latoli's current manager is among the world's most tactically conservative minds. An Arab-Irishman born in Teach Iarann, al Tameer categorically rejects the maxim that "a good offense is the best defense." Preferring muscle-bound enforcers to pace or technical ability, al Tameer grew up in his home country of Muzira'a Ba'aydah but moved to the Stvoto Latolisi capital Tobyumosyu after being selected for military service. It was there, among the Stvoto Latolisi Navy's intramural leagues, that he began to formulate his football ideology. (Incidentally, the same influences can be seen in the general instincts of the Hozastvu club side, which represents the Navy. Fans of the Maroon-Reds are often deeply uncomfortable when they witness their side venture forward for any reason.) al Tameer famously regards the nil-nil draw as a result as good as a victory, and this is in keeping with his Navy footballing education. At any rate, the Arab-Irishman generally makes selections in his own image: stocky, powerful, and often quite dirty athletes uninterested in sprinting or one-touch passing. He views tactical understanding as critical in his teams. And yet, despite all these utterly uninspiring and aesthetically displeasing attributes, al Tameer is well liked by the media, if not by the fans. Genial and warm, and with a light sense of humor, he famously enjoys (rather than resents) giving press conferences. Interviews after the many losses that Stvoto Latoli should be expected to suffer during its halcyon years as a competitive national side are sure to be as friendly and good-natured as those after the rare victory or draw. When asked what he plans to do after leaving his post as the Gold-Whites' manager, he often intimates that he might leave the sport altogether to spend more time with his hobby of woodworking. Nobody is entirely sure if he is serious or is using humor to dodge the question. There is no doubt that both Cóiméid (based in his city of birth, Teach Iarann) and Hozastvu (the outfit based on the Navy Headquarters site where he spent so much time as a serviceman) would be elated to secure his services if he ever departs his current post. However, for the time being this is obviously pure speculation.

Kits

Image

These are the kits used by Stvoto Latoli, provided by Audioslavian sportswear manufacturer Kirola. The metallic gold and white strip is used for all home matches and occasional away matches, whereas the all-dark-blue change strip is used for most away matches but never at home. An unpaid intern in a dingy back office will toss a coin to decide which uniform will be worn in the case of neutral venue matches such as those of the Copa Rushmori, Cup of Harmony, or World Cup finals.

Tactics

After the Cup of Harmony failure, it's back to the drawing board for al Tameer. Actually, there's been such a big tactical revolution in the team that it's more accurate to say the original drawing board appears to have been doused in 180 proof alcohol and then thrown in a tire fire. In a massive departure from personal precedent, the Gold-Whites boss will experiment with a comparatively more-attack-minded 3-6-1. Still the Golden Crows will employ a treble of center halves at the back, but the full backs have been done away with entirely, leaving the wide midfielders exclusively responsible for the maintenance of the wings. Instead, the center of the park is now more packed than ever before, with no less than four central midfielders clogging up the interior of the formation. Finally, Beolagh Athey enters the fray as the Maritime Empire's starting number nine while Tastvu Zhooheizhyu, fresh off a less-than-splendiferous 4013 season, has been left out of the 23-player squad. Athey's age (and, by extension, fatigue sensitivity) could easily be problematic, but he's generally seen as a much better team player and is coming off a year in which he won the Golden Boot.

Information for the Foreign Reader

Stvoto Latoli is a geographically and culturally diverse federation of countries cobbled together politically if not culturally. The Maritime Empire prides itself not only on the geographic breadth of its territory but on the numerous narratives embedded into its history. Read on!

The barbaric Stvoto Latolisi people are aggressive scavengers living at sea. Likely East Asian in terms of ethnic ancestry, they typically have straight, shiny black hair. Their faces are almost always concealed by traditional makeup patterns: men wear a pattern of diagonally alternating white and metallic gold, women wear a quartered pattern of navy and blue. (Footballers, incidentally, forego this makeup while playing the sport.) Their language is notoriously difficult to learn, while it only contains twenty-some basic sounds, all words are formed from abstract relative concepts explained in hieroglyphic form. Rather than letters representing vowels or consonants, letters represent words or phrases. For the purposes of intelligibility, dispatches released for the international public's consumption will adopt an Anglicization policy for Stvoto Latolisi words.

Stvoto Latoli's background is mired in murky prehistory. The legend goes that in an ancient land, a specific group of humans, united by some unknown faith, gradually became greatly feared for their brutality, greed, and mercilessness, until some political event occurred that resulted in the religious practitioners' expulsion out to sea. These people evidently could never find a new place to live, as word of their terrible nature had spread worldwide, and no other nation allowed them to land. So the early Stvoto Latolisis simply accepted their reality, and began to construct massive wooden rafts upon which they could build a large city in which to live. A less ambitious, less devout, less fervent people might have failed in this seemingly impossible task, but they succeeded, and the maritime city-state of Stvoto Latoli was born.

Since, the ruthless people descended from that original group have become less devout; in fact, the religion they followed has been completely forgotten. But their merciless nature has not changed. Once the economy and society of this new country stabilized, the Stvoto Latolisis united to make their floating raft city more flexible and mobile, and eventually it became possible to fragment districts of the city into separate "islands" and direct the superstructure across the oceans to whatever location they preferred. They then began the process of plundering as many vulnerable peoples as they could find. A famous legend explains that the Kagdaz witch Baba Yaga witnessed one of these such pillagings. According to the story, she visited Stvoto Latoli during a time when they were conquering and destroying a race of merpeople below the sea.

In recent years, however, the Stvoto Latolisis have changed approach. (No one is quite sure why.) They have continued to conquer other nations seen as susceptible, but rather than looting and destroying these countries, they instead have looked for ways to mostly preserve the culture of their conquered possessions, while maintaining strict political and military control. They refer to these incorporated possessions as "vassal states."

Various vassal states have been won and lost in the last century. At the current present, the attentions of the Stvoto Latolisi navy and air forces have been occupied by the large vassal states of Muzira'a Ba'aydah and the Pazhujeb Islands. Their relationship with the Muzira'a Ba'aydi is moderately good; the Arab and Irish country appears mostly happy to be able to preserve their culture and avoid the devastation suffered by other possessions. That mutual amicability is non-existent, however, between the Pazhujeb Islands and their overlords. The Pazhujebis have proven rebellious and troublesome, and prison camps are filled to nearly 250% capacity.

We shall briefly explain the cultures of these two complex vassal states.

Muzira'a Ba'aydah consists of two territories, typically referred to as the Northern Territory and the Southern Territory. The large Northern Territory lies in an environmentally tropical zone, and is mostly covered by jungle. No one is quite sure why, but a group of Irish settlers have lived in the area for thousands of years. The other territory, the Southern Territory, is much smaller, and lies on the northeastern corner of a moderately-sized subarctic continent. From this state emerged the Arab people who eventually traveled to the Northern Territory, and began to peacefully settle alongside the native Irish. As these peoples united into one culture, the Irish began to emigrate the opposite direction, and by now there are more or less equal numbers of each ethnicity in each of the two territories. (Place names, incidentally, still follow the old origins: the Northern Territory is filled with towns with Irish names, and the Southern with Arab names.)

The Muzira'a Ba'aydis are quite conservative and religious. They have developed a unique religion which is organized around The Myth of the River, an old story. In this myth, a golden boat travels down a wide, wide river, but the further it travels, the wider the river becomes and eventually the members of the boat do not know if they are still in the river or at sea. This is a critical metaphor for the attainability of the afterlife - one cannot know when he or she has reached it.

Pazhujebis on the other hand, are the largely the descendants of North Indian expellees of Rome. They settled the Pazhujeb Islands about two millenia ago. They have light to medium brown skin, dark hair, and brown eyes. All Pazhujebis, men and women, wear purple turbans, though like the face paint of the Stvoto Latolisis, these turbans are forgone during sporting events. There are multiple ethnic groups here. The Mahathan Pazhujebis are by a slight margin the largest group; they consider themselves to be descendants of wealthy entrepreneurs within the Roman Empire and as such feel a general sense of superiority. Following close behind in terms of number are the African Pazhujebis, who are full or partial descendants of Yoruba immigrants who have arrived over the course of the last millennium. Finally, the smaller group of the Zahuji Pazhujebis also consider themselves to be descendants of Indians expelled from the Roman Empire, however, they have rejected Roman social influences due to lingering resentment over the expulsion, and have tried to culturally return to their North Indian roots.

Geneticists have studied the sequences of Mahathans and Zahujis and concluded that there is no fundamental racial difference between the two clades, but that does not stop Pazhujebis from perceiving strong distinctions between the two, and the belief that Mahathans and Zahujis are ethnically separate remains heavily prevalent.

While football is incredibly popular in both Muzira'a Ba'aydah and the Pazhujeb Islands, it is a developing sport in Stvoto Latoli, where their partially-mechanized form of rowing has always been the country's most popular sport. That being the case, Stvoto Latoli is by far the most economically powerful country in the federation, and so clubs are able to train local players more effectively and purchase Muzira'a Ba'aydi or Pazhujebi players away from their home sources. This serves as an equalizing factor, though the phenomenon is still visible when examining the demography of this current national team; there are nine Muzira'a Ba'aydis and nine Pazhujebis, but there are just five Stvoto Latolisis and two of them are goalkeepers.

Demonyms are slightly complicated. In terms of citizenship, it is acceptable to refer to anyone in Muzira'a Ba'aydah, the Pazhujeb Islands, or the city-state of Stvoto Latoli as "Stvoto Latolisi," but in terms of describing ethnicity, referring to somebody as such implies that they are from the actual raft complex. (In the same way, "Stvoto Latoli" may refer to either the small raft city-state of Tobyumosyu, or it may refer to the broader empire as a whole.) It is not, however, typically considered offensive when foreigners refer to anybody from the Maritime Empire as Stvoto Latolisi, even if they are actually Muzira'a Ba'aydis or Pazhujebis.

The TSLB ("Tazi’shu Stvoto Latolisi Balomobi") is the organizing association for the national football team and the league structure for club teams. There is no such thing as "the Stvoto Latoli FA" - what you mean to say is "the TSLB." Among fans, the most popular nicknames for the national team are "Gu Milusatratu Gerhoomow'thatho" (or "The Golden Crows" in English) and "Gu Milusatratu-Zootyusoyzyu" (or "The Gold-Whites" in English).

ALL RP PERMISSIONS ARE YES EXCEPT FOR THE ONES THAT AREN'T
basically, just don't murder anybody or injure them for more than four or five matchdays, please
But he was wrong. It was he who was the traitor, he the dictator, he the true tyrant. I returned to above the waves and presented the location of the merpeople's treasure to the dictator of Stvoto Latoli, who greedily took the coordinates without thanking me. As I leapt atop my broom, I could already hear the wailing of the merpeople from the depths; their last shred of dignity, the last remnant of their kingdom, their last symbol of hope; raped by the tyrannical humans.

Head Coach

Elías Carrasco
Following the retirement of former boss Ernesto Farías the FFS eschewed their usual pursuit of a big name foreign replacement and instead went for the continuity option, by promoting Farías’ assistant coach to the big blue chair. Took the Corsairs to the World Cup at the first time of asking and lifted the Copa Rushmori.

Backroom Staff

Assistant Head Coach: Alejandro Echeverría
Defensive Coach: Germán Moya
Attacking Coach: Rubén Contreras
Goalkeeping Coach: Silvio Romero
Fitness Coach: Sergio Castellanos
Technical Coordinator: Rodrigo Defederico
Team Doctor: Dr Iván Morelli

Talent

GK: 1. Armando Abad (33) – Dínamo Maturín
That number one spot is now officially undisputed following the retirement of Ezequiel Medrán. A talented shot stopper who occupies the role of sweeper keeper in Carrasco’s attack oriented side.
GK: 13. Rafael Molino (25) – Ciudad Soluca
Released by Ciudad as a teenager but bought back for a large amount of currency in the summer following four excellent seasons at Alianza Jucaro.
GK: 25. Emilio León (28) – Sportivo Soluca
A regular in the Sportivo goal at the age of just 19, big things were expected of the young shot stopper and he’s largely delivered on that promise.

DR: 2. Cristiano Damían (31) – Dínamo Maturín
Back in the SuperLiga fold after a productive spell in Astograth, the former Ciudad Soluca trainee has found his feet quickly at his new club. A fallback by trade but pushed further forward in the coach’s offensive-first formation.
DRC: 5. Guillermo Lucena (28) – Ciudad Soluca
A favourite of previous coach Farías after serving him well in the Under-21 team, the Olympic Squad and at Ciudad. A solid defender with an excellent reading of the game. Equally adept at centreback or fallback.
DC: 6. Sergio Ayala (24) – El Nacional
A classy, ball-playing centreback in the classical Gozan model. Ayala has both pace and poise, a combination that has got the coaching staff at the Independiente very excited indeed.
DL: 3. Mauricio Abeyta (30) – Alianza Jucaro
A buccaneering fallback who clearly longs to be a winger. An attacking threat down the left with a powerful shot and accurate cross. Unfortunately his defensive duties are sometimes forgotten.
DLC: 12. José Antonio Caro (23) – Sportivo Soluca
Plucked from the Academy of arch-rivals Ciudad, Sportivo’s scouts allowed themselves a smug smile as the defender blossomed into a top performer. Naturally left footed, Caro provides a handy option to balance out Carrasco’s favoured three man defence.
DRC: 14. Javier Bonilla (22) – Alianza Jucaro
A right back by trade who often gets shoved into the centre during Alianza coach Barragán’s numerous tactical switches. Had an excellent debut season in the first team and now considered undroppable. The fact his father owns the club doesn’t hurt either.
DLC: 19. Jonás Jacinto (31) – Ciudad Soluca
Made a surprise move from Segunda Liga side Motril to capital city giants Ciudad and hasn’t looked back. Mr Reliable at the back for both Ciudad and the national side. Now captains Sargossa following the retirement of Sosa.
DC: 21: Aurelio Pascual (34) – Sportivo Cordova
Only a dearth of strong centrebacks has kept Pascual out of national team reckoning for this long. But after strong domestic season has finally seen the Cordova man force his way into the squad where he provides an experienced option.

MC: 4. Eduardo Zacarías (27) – Ciudad Soluca
A midfielder with tremendous lung capacity. His box-to-box runs were a key part of Dunas Del Sol’s excellent domestic form before he was snatched up by the club from the capital.
AMR: 7. Xabier Sola (22) – Sporting San Marquez
The latest boy from the barrios to make a name for himself at the Estadio Silva. Xabier provides both pace and power down the flank but a lack of composure in the final third show that there’s still some edges to be smoothed on this rough diamond.
MC: 8. Alejandro Rodríguez (24) – Sporting San Marquez
The youth setup at the Estadio Silva has a long history of unearthing gems and the unquestionable cream of the crop and subject of this rather laboured metaphor is Rodríguez. The obvious solution to the Rodrigo Defederico shaped hole in the national squad.
AML: 11. Federico Cifuentés (28) – Dínamo Maturín
It’s entirely possible that Federico could have represented Sargossa at the Olympic 100m, such is the pace hidden away in his diminutive frame. A real terror for opposition fallbacks, although a consistent delivery shy of being genuinely world class.
AMRC: 15. Flavio Freitas (30) – El Nacional
A tireless attacking midfielder whose impressive work rate and never say die attitude make him a firm favourite among Gozans and neutrals alike.
MC: 16. Germán Sauseda (29) – Ciudad Soluca
Midfield playmaker with a prestigious range of passing. Sauseda stood out in a fairly average Porto Alegro Azul side that consistently punched above its weight. Brought to Ciudad by Ernesto Farías during his spell in charge.
DMC: 18. Mateo Olmedo (29) – Alianza Jucaro
The latest in a long line of talented midfielder anchor-men produced by our mighty archipelago. Prone to nosebleeds if he crosses the halfway line.
DMC: 22. Tino Devesa (23) – Dunas Del Sol
Another of those midfield battlers we seem so keen on developing. But unlike some of his illustrious predecessors Devesa also possesses excellent technical and isn’t prone to feeling all feint if he stumbles into the opposition half.
AMLC: 24. Julio César Merino (26) – Dínamo Maturín
A top assist provider in the domestic league and one dangerous crosser of a football. Dínamo have been fighting of suitors for the midfielder for years.

FC: 9. Federico Noyola (29) – Sporting San Marquez
Yet another gem unearthed from the barrios of San Marquez and polished by ‘El Academia’. Has an uncanny knack of being in the right place and the right time and has proved a scourge of SuperLiga defences because of it. Has replaced Federico Ferreyra as the penalty area predator.
FC: 10. Stefano Bustos (32) – Sportivo Soluca
At 6’4” the Sportivo targetman is a real threat in the air and adds the perfect option if ‘hoof it to the big fella’ is required.
FC: 17. Miguel De Los Santos (23) – Daroca Marinos
After two years of banging in goals galore during loan spells in the Segunda Liga Miguel was given his SuperLiga baptism of fire last season and took the opportunity with both hands. Now a highly coveted striking prospect that the Marinos will do well to hold onto.
FRC: 20. Saturnín Quinteros (31) – Ciudad Soluca
Big things were expected of a forward who caught the attention with a seventy four goal season for one of Ciudad’s many youth teams. Often used as an attacking midfielder at club level by Farías so more of the same could be expected.
FL: 23. Enzo Jara (26) – Sportivo Soluca
An out-and-out winger who offers pure pace down the flank. Capable of tying opposition defenders up in knots but often lacking composure in the final third.

Style
A high pressing and attacking 3-4-3. Probable starting eleven, listed from left to right.
Abad -- Jacinto - Ayala - Lucena -- Cifuentés - Zacarías - Sauseda - Damían -- Jara - Noyola - Quinteros

OOC: Hey guys, sorry for another delay again. Life's been tough and busy lately, with the likes of Senior Prom, moving into a new house, as well as lots of projects and the lack of updated ranking for the CR. For this Copa Rushmori, I decided to use the WCoH Formula for the time being, with a win = 1 point, a draw/overtime loss/PK loss = 0.5 point and full-time loss = 0 point.

Ranking is available here, so please feel free to see where you're placed at. The pots and groups will be up in about 30 minutes.

Electrum Football is proud to present the...

Electrumite National Football Team

Introduction
The Electrumites have had a cracker cycle, with their first appearance in the World Cup Playoffs, in just three tries of the World Cup, but they narrowly lost to the Calanian Union with two losses to their name. Nevertheless, they received an invitation to the 62nd Cup of Harmony, where they vanquished their hoodoo of one draw and five losses in the competition to get out of the group stage with a win, loss and a draw. Then, they would defeat Ceni, and then Yttribia by penalties before losing to Turori in the semis. In the third place playoff, the team lost to Cosumar, handing them their first top-four performance in a WCC sanctioned event.

Another season of more of the same last time has meant that Daniel Brunet has a lot to fill in his shoes after Coach Wilkinson's exit. This is the first tournament he will head fully for the Electrumites, and it's one that the Electrumites have done well so far. Last time, they managed to get into the Round of 16 in first place on goal differential over Eura, where they promptly lost to Darmen. Now, revenge will be sought as this time they are in Norrehavn for this edition's Copa Rushmori. In recent times, they have improved on their all time record from more losses than wins to more wins than losses.

Executive Board
The coaching team has undergone an expansion. Despite there being new players, Electrum Football has decided to keep the old management team from before, given their recent performances in the group stage of WC70 qualification and their breakout performance in the most recent Copa Rushmori held in Polar Islandstates. This team is known as the Executive Board and are in charge of ensuring the team has a successful performance this time round, as well as managing the ongoing development programs. Coach Wilkinson retired at the end of the Cup of Harmony, seeing through Electrum's rise in the rankings. Daniel Brunet was appointed in the Cup of Harmony as his replacement, opting for a more defensive playstyle.

Notes

Saintland has a very rough style of play and very few fouls in our national league, so don't hesitate to card Sanctii players, especially if Saintland loses. In the Sanctii version of the 4-2-1-3 formation, the outside backs also function as outside midfielders. King Andreas is the younger brother of former King Petrus XX, quarterback and captain for Saintland's gridiron team and also of Prince Ioannes, the captain of Saintland's basketball team. He is the team captain and the team's playmaker and was recently anointed the new King of Saintland by Patriarch Nicolaus V following the excommunication of King Petrus XX. Ioannes and Nicolaus Poenius are brothers, as are Silvester, Paulus and Josephus Flaccus, Stephanus and Philippus Vagionius, Petrus and Isaacus Barrius and Petrus and Marcus Jucundius. Andreas Inventius is the brother of Pius Inventius, Saintland's flagbearer at the VIII Winter Olympics. Inventius is a defensive-minded midfielder. Stephanus Vagionius is not an especially fast player, but he is very tall and he is an exceptional finisher. Philippus Vagionius is faster than his brother, but not as good at finishing. The Poenius brothers both have world-class speed. When Saintland attacks, Prince Andreas usually has possession of the ball and has to decide whether to go for the goal himself or pass it to Vagionius or Flaccus instead. Prince Andreas takes free kicks, corners and throw-ins. Stephanus Vagionius will handle penalties.

After the ascension to the Throne of King Petrus XX, he reached out to Josephus Flaccus. Flaccus had defected Saintland following World Cup 65 qualifying and became a star in New Sideburn's domestic league. King Petrus XX worked out a deal for him to return to the Saintland National Team. This led to Saintland's most successful World Cup up to that point in the 68th edition, which concluded with a Round of 16 defeat to Polar Islandstates. That was followed up with a Round of 16 exit from their first Copa Rushmori, at the hands of Taeshan. Saintland dominated in Qualifying for World Cup 69, but were stunned by Antoletia in the group stage, suffering an early exit. They came into their second Copa Rushmori as the 4th highest ranked Rushmori nation in the then-current KPB rankings and made it all the way to the finals before faltering against Polar Islandstates. After an ill-fated host bid for all 3 WCC events during the 70th cycle, King Petrus XX gave his brother Andreas an ultimatum - Win World Cup 70 or be stripped of his captaincy! After Prince Andreas failed to accomplish that, he was stripped of his captaincy.

Former Holy Republican National Team manager Rule Theriault was hired as the first manager of the Saintland National Team. Theriault was highly successful as the Republican manager, taking a bunch of lightly regarded prospects and turning them into one of the elite teams in international soccer, a team that came very close to winning World Cup 68. However, after his team self-destructed during the 70th World Cup cycle, it was nationalized by the Imperial Government of the Holy Republican Empire and Theriault was left without his team. Fortunately for him, his long-time assistant Massimiliano Abdullahi had already been approached by King Petrus XX for the Sanctii managerial job. After Theriault became available, Abdullahi convinced the King of Saintland to hire his former boss instead.

Rule Theriault, the son of a Republican admiral, never really had the right temperament to manage a Republican team, but he could not have had a better temperament, on paper, to be the Sanctii manager. Theriault believes in defensive-oriented soccer, with an emphasis on discipline, perfect execution and on the primacy of the team rather than the individual. While he had to mute these aspects of his personality in order to manage a Republican team that quickly became the most hated team in the multiverse, he expected to be able to be himself as the manager of the Sanctii National Team.

Theriault's first move was to radically alter the Sanctii team's tactics. Saintland, a nation known for developing great defensive soccer talent, had gradually become a recklessly attack-oriented team under Prince Andreas's captaincy, as Prince Andreas left the team without a competent defensive back. While Theriault reduced the size of the roster and re-numbered the players, his biggest change was his shift to a 6-3-1 formation, which he has dubbed the "Ladder" formation. The "Ladder" is built around preventing goals from being scored, with a heavy reliance on the counter-attack to produce goals. Therefore, Lucas Aufidius, the subpar defensive back who is primary known as a long-ball specialist, remains in the starting lineup. However, Matthaeus Belaeus returns to the starting lineup and young Paulus Plinius will be permitted to start on a regular basis for the first time. But, the anchor of the Sanctii defense is Iulianus Agrius, a young sweeper for the St. Paulus club in the Sanctii domestic league, who will be making his National Team debut at this tournament. Another notable new starter is Andreas Inventius, a long-time Sanctii reserve who was held out of the starting lineup by Prince Andreas because he was a defensive minded midfielder rather than an attack-minded one. With the departure of Acedonian ringer Herakles Karoki, who has under-performed in the past few cycles, and the aging Georgius Catiotus, the Sanctii National Team now consists of 23 players, the fewest in a long time, but Theriault believed that the team would be better off without the 2 of them.

At the 20th edition of the Copa Rushmori, Theriault's Sanctii National Team reached the semis before falling to Eura. The Sanctii entered World Cup Qualifying for the 71st cycle ranked 10th in the current KPB rankings, their highest ranking ever and had qualified for 4 out of the previous 5 World Cups, including 3 straight going into World Cup 71. However, the team never advanced past the Round of 16 under Prince Andreas and Saintland has never won any international soccer tournament. Theriault started out that World Cup cycle hoping to change that, with his new emphasis on defense, but instead managed Saintland to their worst WCQ performance as a number of star players refused to put in any effort, in hopes of getting Theriault fired. King Petrus refused to fire Theriault and ordered the team to win the followed edition of the Cup of Harmony if they wished to enter future editions of the World Cup. They would finish third, but it would ultimately prove a moot point as King Andreas fired Theriault, appointed himself captain again and decided to enter World Cup 72 anyways.

However, King Andreas has decided against returning to the ultra-aggressive formation that he utilized during his first captaincy. Instead, the Sanctii will now play a 1-4-1-2-1-1 formation, with the only significant change being Petrus Mamilius's placement in the starting lineup in place of Matthaeus Belaeus. The new Sanctii team will still be a relatively defensive-minded team, but nowhere near as defensive-minded as they were under Theriault. King Andreas hopes that this will lead to their return to the World Cup finals and advancement beyond the Round of 16 for the first time. But first, they have to take care of unfinished business in the CR.

"Do you think the squad will suffer some let down after coming so close to winning the World Cup? I mean losing in the Final the way they did has to be quite hard to get over right, to have equalized and then Osarius takes the lead again just a few minutes later and somehow holds on. With everyone saying the Wanderers would have won it had they managed to get it to extra time, since it seemed the Firebirds were losing steam and quickly as those last few minutes waned. How do you get over that in time for the Copa?"

"It is just a part of life and while it naturally stings quite a bit, the Wanderers likely realize that they will have their shot again in two years and see the chance to capitalize on their success in the World Cup to try and get their first ever Copa Rushmori title. Given that they are top three in both the WCC and Copa rankings, they have every right to think that they are now favorites to win any tournament that they throw themselves into, especially if they come into the tournament in good spirits and in form."

"I suppose, however with Tobias having hung up his cleats after the Final, the team no doubt is going to have to take some time to adjust to a new striking pair. From what I have seen, they are going to be using van Stiphout and Mauer, relegating Müller to the bench. Although I do like the call up of Neci to replace Tobias, with the good work that he has put in Valanora, it is a nice reward for the lad. However, having two youth as your starting strikers is a bit gutsy and I think van Setten may just be slightly off their rocker in making that choice."

"Maybe they are but you can't argue against the results right now, they did just demolish Mapletish four to two in the opening game. While the defense needs to get its act in gear, that offensive pair that you seem so worried about looks like they are ready to lead the squad to those distances they wish to go. It is that youthful exuberance that may see the Wanderers getting not only to this prior World Cup Final but perhaps more Finals in the years to come, as they are aiming for the stars and are young enough to not know any better than they can do just that."

"I suppose you are right, however it is hard to see where the leadership is going to come from in the squad, with the oldest player being Szánthó Nyék, a player most think will be on the outs when the next World Cup comes around. There is Taahira but even he might be gone for the next cycle, that would lead the team quite devoid of leadership and experience."

"Perhaps in the traditional sense but Császár Mór has been a great player for a few years now and grew up in the Euran domestic league, one of the more challenging leagues in the world. While he might be a little young, he has the wealth of experience you would want from your leader and I highly expect that he will be named the captain for the next World Cup. A solid and good choice, one that I think could pay huge dividends for the squad, perhaps the edge they would need to topple the Firebirds should the two find themselves in the Final once more."

"I hope you are right, for now I guess I will see how the squad does here in the Copa, as the group is a bit of trouble despite having just taken out Mapletish. Both Eastfield Lodge and Polaaskan have the talent to pull and upset if the Wanderers are not recovered from that disappoint Final and are too high on themselves from the win."

"And this is why van Setten is the manager, for he will have the squad ready for the challenges they are like to provide, as was shown in the World Cup my friend."

PERFECT START TO COPA

OOC: For RP purposes the Copa Rushmori is taking place in the summer of 2064, after the 8th KERFA league season (which has yet to be scorinated) and the 59th Champions' Cup. Therfore, transfers made during transfer window X took place the summer before the Copa and as such the roster will be updated shortly.

With changes in every area of the Kernansquillecan national team in the lead up to the 21st Copa Rushmori the Green and Whites may have been excused from struggling against Saintland whom are tough opponents even on a good day. Harry Broudant was managing his first competitive international, a new formation was being implemented on the field and a significant rotation of players had taken place within the squad and the starting XI. A very young team was selected by Broudant with Londyn Käufer the only player over 30 years old to be selected. In many ways this Kernansquillecan side is the start of a new chapter in Kernansquillecan football. The team was shored up defensively with attacking players given a much freer role, allowing for positional rotation.

The draw gave Kernansquillec a group out of which they should be able to escape, however with a clash against group favourites Saintland first up, it was looking far from easy. But it turned out to be an almost perfect start to the group: Kernansquillec dominated the majority of proceedings against a very physical Saintland side. The speed and technique of Poutre and Iris, who were able to find plenty of space out wide, especially on the counter, was the source of both goals. The opener came in the 29th minute when Poutre broke free down the right side after Bloxam cleared Saintland's corner. Poutre pushed down the channel and his inch-perfect low cross found Noupen who had peeled of just inside the 18 yard box. The skipper didn't hesitate and fired home beyond Seius. The second came early in the second half and helped calm the nerves of Kernansquillecan supporters. This time is was Iris who did the damage. A neat one-two with overlapping full-back and débutante Hugo Gashotov left Saintland's Ioannes Poenius miles away from Iris who cut inside and unleaded a fierce strike that was helped in via a slight deflection off of Agrius.

A two nil victory ahead of the Kers next game against unranked Southwest Eastnorth means that the Kers stand a very strong chance of sealing their place in the last sixteen early if they can win and results go their way. A positive first game needs to be turned into a sustained run if the Green and Whites are to break their run of 3 consecutive round of sixteen exits.

Elections Overview
Frans Halstrom | Political Correspondent

In the upcoming Varish election we have a handful of parties: some old and some new. However, we're going to have a look at them all.

Liberal Party (RULING PARTY)
Leader: Nicklas Jamesson | Ideology: Left

The Liberals have their work cut out for them in these upcoming elections. Jamesson is adamant that the petroleum industry must remain nationalized and agricultural marketing boards must stay in place. Ultimately, the liberals are trying to hold on to their collectivist orientation among a nation of growing individualism. In a way, the Liberal Party is also the conservative party as it attempts to main maintain the status-quo of leftism. However, the liberals will be able to cash in on the recent growth of the economy and the relative success of the Emergence Act. But whether or not the liberals will be able to fend off the conservative tide will be a question that only the campaign trail will be able to answer.

Progressive Conservative Party (MAJORITY OPPOSITION)
Leader: Markus Leonardsson | Ideology: Centre-Right

Some call it a coalition of the former Moderate and Conservative Parties, but officially, the Progressive Conservatives are a for-real force. While outside of Vermark, the PCs would definitively be considered a left-wing party. Regardless, Leonardsson and his colleagues are making a decent splash in Varish politics. The Progressive Conservatives are extremely charismatic, and their ideas are convincing as well. Their core ideas are economic promotion and development in order to increase tax revenue in order to strengthen in the welfare state. One could argue that they are the Liberal Party with a twist. However, they are very much an opposing force to the Liberals. They are advocating for reform left and right, including privatizing EnerMark Petroleum and the Velstand Agricultural Board. And finally, rumours are circulating that the PCs are also planning on launching a socio-cultural ideology in complement their economic ideas.

Socialist Party (MINORITY OPPOSITION)
Leader: Sara Golning | Ideology: Far-Left

More trade barriers, more collectives, more government enterprises. All of these have prominent places on the economic agenda of the Socialist Party. It, of course, is not very popular since the recent opening of the economy has been so popular. While the Socialists won't be successful economically, they could very well become a prominent third party by being a social forerunner. With extremely lax views on abortion and other contentious social issues, the Socialists have become very appealing to the university student voting bloc. However, do not expect the Socialists to win a huge amount of seats; they'll likely come out as the most powerful of all of the fringe parties.

Christian Democrats (MINORITY OPPOSITION)
Leader: Matilda Axelberg | Ideology: Right

The Christian Democrats are relevant only because they are new. As a historically secular country, religion mixing with Varish politics is extremely rare. However, the Christian Democrats are here to challenge the growing support of abortion, marriage rights, and anti-theism. Once again, this party will not win a large number of slots in Parliament, but they will become one of the more assertive minor parties, ad=nd they could become an ally and influence of the Progressive Conservatives. They represent a very narrow demographic category of Vermark, but this category could very well grow in the future.

These are the major parties of the Varish Parliament. Stay tuned to this blog to receive more news and analysis throughout the election season.
