"WE DID IT!"
Coach Van Rijn, the unsung heroine of fielding for the national team, was the first to leap out of the Death to Saintland Stadium bench after the final out of the game against Coreyo.
The rest of the team swarmed the infield in a giant group hug. Everyone congratulated each other in frenzied excitement.
Later, back in the clubhouse, manager Van Pelt brought the good news.
"We are AT THE TOP of our group - six wins, one loss - and that was to the team we beat today!"
The celebration was on. Van Pelt booked reservations at the best restaurant in Gregoryisgodistan (which, of course, only served gruel and prune juice), and the team ate a special dinner.
During it, Matt and Jacinda sat together.
"Hey, Jacinda?" Matt suddenly remembered - they had forgotten to go out on their dinner date!
"Yeah?"
"I just realised that I never took you out to dinner a couple of nights ago..."
Jacinda smiled and squeezed Matt's hand. "That's okay. Maybe when we get back to South Yerfilag."
"Where do you go to college?" Matt asked.
"South Yerfilag University."
"SYU? Really? I go to the College of the Two Cincys, across University Boulevard."
"No way! I wanted to go there, but they were too expensive. What's your major?"
"I double major in sports science and commentary. You?"
"Computer science," Jacinda muttered sheepishly.
Matt threw on a sarcastic tone. "What's a geeky girl like you doing on the national team?"
Jacinda pulled Matt over to her face by the ear. "You really, really, want to go there?"
For a moment, Matt was frightened. Then he felt a kiss on his cheek.
"I love you," she whispered.
Matt thought he was dreaming. "Can you say that again?"
Jacinda cupped Matt's face in her hands. "I love you, Matt."
Tears came to Matt's eyes. He placed his hands on hers, which were still on his face. "I love you, too."
