(OOC: Contains a bit of swearing)

KamRo Rugby Park, Vfana

"Jesus fucking Christ"

Moli muttered, arms folded, as the Polkopia attack once again tore it's way through the Szavoda defence. The visitor's forward shot was only kept out by a diving save from Nemanja, but the rest of the Szavda defence stood around, hands on hips as they'd been slashed open again. It was 17 minutes into the game and Polkopia had broken through the middle 4 times and had already converted their second chance into the opening goal of the match, when a low shot from the Polkopia forward beat Petrovic at his near post and made the score 1-0.

"Get back and defend you dumb fucks!" bellowed Moli from the side once again, running her heel-clad foot through a stack of water bottles and sending the scattering across the grass as the team re-group to defend the corner - Polkopia's 5th of the game. Fortunately the ball was long from the corner and it curled all the way through and bounced over the hoardings into the stands.

The KamRo Rugby stadium in Vfana Bay was the host of this game, despite the fact that it had hosted a rugby match the night before and would host another one in two days time. Moli had written to the Vfana Rugby Authority in order to ask whether the ground could be used for the fixture, and they begrudgingly agreed in return for a payment of D10,000. The World Cup authorities had, sensibly, deemed that the Lot, as it had been affectionately named, was unsuitable for international football, so Moli and Dazdan had scrambled around to find a location for the match against Polkopia.

Three other closer, smaller venues had all declined, so the KamRo had to do, and, expectedly, it was completely empty. There were 10,000 unoccupied blue seats, and the only people in the stadium in the ground other than the teams of Polkopia and Szavoda were the janitorial staff who were busy clearing up from last nights rugby game. They had to hire workers to paint the lines on the pitch - despite this, the lines for the rugby pitch were still very prominent, leading to the occasional moment of confusion. The team had to assemble the goals from the back of a van Moli and Dazdan had hired. All-in-all, it looked less amateur than the Lot, but at least it was legal.

Petrovic bunted the ball up the field and immediately Polkopia regained possession, passing it slickly through Szavoda's hectic midfield. Branimir Milic was running himself into the ground in an attempt to retrieve the ball, but he couldn't do it all by himself, and wasn't helped by the rash challenges of his team-mates; one Polkopian midfielder could well have feared for his career as centre back Tim Lukic came careering in and swept a big leg underneath him and sent him crashing to the turf. The ref, some poor bastard from a far-off place who drew the short straw, instantly blew up and booked the centre back. Lukic put his hands to his head and looked utterly surprised, and then started to trudge off the pitch, head hanging low.

"No you thick bastard" Moli muttered as she trotted onto the pitch to meet Lukic "It's a yellow, that's a booking, you haven't been sent off. Get back out there."
"Right, gotcha." replied the slightly confused centre back. Moli returned to the technical area where Dazdan was no standing, having moved from the folding chair which they had stolen from the opposition changing room before the game. He had removed his tie and was looking suitably flustered.

"It's not as easy as I thought it would be." sighed Moli, joining Dazdan by his side.
"That it isn't. But give us time. Branimir's looked quite good."
"Yeah, but everyone else has been shite. We didn't train enough; or maybe we trained too much. Plus their fitness is up the wazoo."
"Don't say wazoo."
"Right."

They looked on in silence as Polkopia attacked again, this time down the near-side. "Close him down." Dazdan barked and the left-back Nenad Nikolic obliged, tearing down the pitch to intercept the winger. He somehow managed to steal the ball from him, and after a few nervy touches, he controlled the ball and suddenly had space to run into.

"Press!" Moli shouted, waving the team forward "PRESS!". Nikolic took the ball down the wing and actually managed to beat a defender. Left in so much space in the opposition's half, Nikolic froze up as he had never been gifted so much time before. He looked left, right, then decided to just run straight towards the box. After a slightly dubious body check, he rolled the ball to Branimir Milic in the D, who hurdled an defenders leg before eyeing up the goal. Three defenders converged on him, but he feinted out of the shot and knocked it forwards to Mijo Nikazic, who stole in behind the defence and whipped off a shot which curled past the Polkopian keeper and settled in the bottom left hand corner.

"Wow." was the only thing Dazdan could mutter, it was a genuinely impressive team goal. Moli clapped but didn't allow a smile to replace the all-weather frown. "Come on Mols, you can't deny that was a good finish."

"I suppose, but we'll no doubt get lazy and concede."

Dazdan laughed at her negativity, have a little faith, he thought, returning to his chair.

8 minutes later, she was right. Polkopia once again broke Szavoda's defence with one long ball, Bogdanovic completely mistiming his jump and allowing a Polkopian striker a clean run through to the box. There was nothing Petrovic could do except throw himself to the feet of the striker, who then tumbled over in a dramatic fashion. Despite the choreography, a penalty just had to be given. And it was. Petrovic was lucky with a yellow, but he wasn't lucky with the penalty. He dived the right way, but could only push the ball onto the upright and into the net.

Polkopia added another before half-time, Bogdanovic again to blame as he totally lost his marker on a free-kick and it was a simple 3-yard tap in past Petrovic for 3-1. Milic unfurled his magic footwork in stoppage time, dancing past three defenders, but no-one connected to the rebound of his rasping shot, and the half ended with the hosts two adrift in the silent stadium.

The changing room was perfectly alive during the break, some players took a drink and discussed the game, whilst others discussed the Political Theory paper they had due in on Tuesday or other real life matters. Moli and Dazdan entered the changing room shortly afterwards, Dazdan taking a seat behind Moli, who was standing by a white marker-board . She waited a moment for quiet, but it didn't come, so she said sternly "Guys." No response. "Guys." She repeated. No response. She calmly picked up one of the glass tumblers which had been provided on a platter, bounced it once in her hand before hurling it at the far wall with serious fire. It smashed against the plaster and showered onto the floor. Everyone in the room, even Dazdan was shocked into silence. Moli straightened her jacket and calmed herself.

"Right, first off, that was a shit performance. Utter balls." She pointed at defensive midfielder Horvath "You've let them through you four times already, and they've scored twice off it. Be more physical, chop 'em down when you've got the chance." She swivelled her gaze to Branimir "Branimir, you've been good on the ball but you've got to marshal the midfield more; you're currently wondering about like a bunch of headless cunts, get in fucking shape and lock it down." Milic nodded, whilst the rest of the midfield four mumbled in agreement. "Nemanja, you've been the one decent spark in this shitfest, good work, the goals have been unlucky."

She picked up a pen from under the board and uncapped it. "I want to make a few tactical changes, up the tempo a little bit." She proceeded to draw elaborate schematics on the whiteboard, with so many arrows, circles and crosses that not even Dazdan was 100% sure what was going on. He'd always considered himself the more tactical of the two, but Moli spoke and drew like a pro, assigning positions and distribution technical terms by the dozen. After more tactics and more swearing, the team went back out to play the second half.

There was some difference in the second period - the midfield looked sturdier and looked able to spring the counter-attack, which they did twice early in the half, the ball ran away from Nikazic once and the other time Zar Mihailovic punted the ball almost out of the stadium on the volley. However, the defence remained as creaky as ever. A popped through-ball over the top allowed in the Polkopian striker, whose scuffed shot rolled inches wide of Petrovic's far post.

Defensive frailties continued to hound Szavoda, and it proved to be their downfall shortly into the last quarter, when the defence crumbled again and Polkopia's striker ran in unopposed, deftly chipping Petrovic and making the lead an impenetrable 4-1. Moli fumed and rang the changes on the pitch, subbing off 7 players at one time and giving them an earful as soon as they left the playing surface. The game slowed, despite Branimir's best efforts, and was heading to an inevitable conclusion when Szavoda grabbed a consolation goal. A corner was knocked down into the six-yard box, and a Polkopian defender tried to hammer it away, but instead it rebounded off Damjan Dragic and dribbled into the goal, giving a consolation to the red-and-whites. It cheered Dazdan up, but Moli scowled as the final whistle went. Guess what was waiting for the players in the changing room? Another assault on their ears and dignity.

It was now well past 11pm when everything had wrapped up, and Moli and Dazdan were out on the pitch, now stripped of goalposts and markings.

"That wasn't too bad, considering it was our first game."
Moli looked up into the sky "I suppose you're right. It could, and should, have been a massacre, but we played well in parts. Defence needs work."
"We could always send out some feelers. There's 10 unemployed foreign coaches for every coaching slot. They could teach our guys some stuff."
"That's a good idea - I'll get on the phone tomorrow."

There was a silence as they strolled across the grass.

"You know what Moli?"
"What?"
"For the first time in a long while, I'm actually excited for something. Like, proper, normal excited. Equestrian States in three days, the competition in 2 weeks. I'm looking forward to it."
"I am too. It will be good to get away from this dump."
"Too true."

Walamzian Group Stage Drawn

Here are the results of the group stage draw:

Group F
Walamzia
Waterandearthstan
Palmeria
Aloquirbe
Renatiem
Thibaut

Yep, that's right. We're at the top of the list. According to Brian Clough, however, no jumping for joy yet.

"I think that we are out here to play football, not to get harassed by you lot. We got our group, and you better be supporting us the whole way through or we're going to fail. I'll give part of my salary to any homeless Walamzian who wishes to support the team, because I know he'll support it and not boo the players if and when they perform badly. I had some experience with some cheating players in my club management days, and I won't tolerate that. Football is a gentlemen's game; play like gentlemen, or you'll be treated like sailors. That goes for you too, Mr. Reporter."

As always, we wish all the Walamzians the best of luck.

Clough Goes Mad

After the friendly against Frenline Delpha, Brian Clough had this to say to the media:

"You know what, that referee had better have a good excuse to call that penalty. My defenders don't commit silly fouls like that. He's an utter disgrace to the game and should be banned from refereeing an international match ever again. When you got referees who get bought out by certain people, then football is ruined with money. I remember polishing the boots of one of the older players in the team when I was older, and that taught me responsibility, and that also taught me to keep my mouth shut. Apparently, that young man who "fouled" their player in the penalty area never learned that lesson. Harsh loss, but fair, given how we played."

Hakifao Starlings - BoF 58 Roster

Postby The Hakifao Isles » Thu Feb 26, 2015 8:01 pm

Hakifao Starlings : Baptism of Fire 58 Official Roster

Nation History

The Hakifao Federation, the furthest northwest of the three major nations to the north of Super-Llamaland, has a rich and glorious history of being taken over repeatedly but coming out ahead of their captors. Parts of the classical Vjäle, Arøndeshölm, and Nojais Empires at various points in its older history, Hakifao first became independent following the Öslerholm Revolts of 1687, whereupon they broke apart from the Arendellenske Monarchy. They were one of the first nations in the North to embrace democracy, deposing the autocratic Henrik II in early 1705, nearly half a century before the formation of Arøndeshölm's Talspråkare för Republiken movement.

In 1896, after nearly two centuries of relative peace due to non-aggression pacts signed with Vjaalsbürg and Arøndeshölm, the fledgling Arendellenske Empire attempted to annex Hakifao, failing miserably in a multi-year war that sparked the First Northern Conflict (1905 - 1912). In said conflict, the expansionist Arendellenskes were defeated by a Vjaal-Hakifao coalition, and the Isles gained territory. In the Second Northern Conflict (1926 - 1928), however, the Hakifaos lost much of their territory to a Vjaal-Arendellenske alliance.

The North continued onwards through relative peace until the rising of the Llamanean Union under autocratic William Andeck. The Isles surrendered quickly and as such had the least loss of life. Super-Llamaland occupied Hakifao from 1975 to 1986.

After the dissolution of the Empire and the death of Andeck, Hakifao once again became an independent state. However, after countless years of pressure, the nation joined the Arendellenske Union in 1999, quickly losing autonomy but still technically being a sovereign nation. Now, a new wave of nationalists have pressured the Arendellenskes into more rights, but their fate is still up in the air.

Team History

Although Hakifao had numerous short-lived leagues since 1934, after the Llamanean Expansions, they did not possess one. Pressured to create one by the Arendellenskes upon entering their union, the Hakifao Football League (HFL) was founded in 2002.

Still, it would not have survived if it weren't for two men - Alessandr Simon was the first. Herlek Korhonen, the second. Simon, the owner of FC Ulselsheim, one of the largest cities, in Hakifao, began to sign foreign players, building a football empire and taking over the reigns as commissioner, reviving the league and bringing football to Hakifao. But the only reason it stayed was Korhonen - a do-it-all offensive star in his day, which perfectly coincided with Ulselsheim's rise to power, who drew players in great amounts for both Denhølm and Ulselsheim after Simon shrewdly engineered a deal for him.

In 2005, the Hakifao Football Association (HFA) was founded to get the Hakifaos access into the international scene. Sure enough, they debuted in the Empire Reunion Cup in 2009, generally doing mediocre. Finally, they gained access to an important sporting region, Atlantian Oceania, and joined as a member. Their first tournament was wildly successful, defeating Osarius and advancing to the Round of Sixteen, and they matched that feat in the second. Now, on the world's greatest stage, can they repeat the feat?

Player Descriptions

#01 - 32 yrs - FC Ulselsheim - Eight caps - Isak ANDERSSON - CAPTAIN
Absolutely fiendish in the net and one of the key players behind Hakifao’s AOCAF success, Isak Andersson is back for what may be his first and last Cup appearance. While at thirty-two he plays a bit more cautious than the recklessness he used to exhibit, Andersson is still agile and durable in the net and should be a solid piece of this Starlings team.
#12 - 30 yrs - Landsbyen Athletic - Uncapped - Anton GUSTAVSSON
The uncapped starting keeper for Landsbyen Athletic, Anton Gustavsson, likely won’t see action until the World Cup Qualifiers - and with Andersson so good in front of him, when he finally gets a well-deserved cap at thirty it’ll be his first in two AOCAFs. Not as talented as the starting keeper, Gustavsson played multiple positions, not focusing on goalie until seventeen. Still, he blossomed in the net in college, and now is a capable and fairly fast keeper, although sometimes his un-goalie-ness shows quite a bit.
#23 - 24 yrs - FC Landsbyen - Uncapped - Arnur VALQUIST
A still fairly young keeper out of FC Landsbyen, and one of the most talented keepers in Northern history, Arnur Valquist is certainly a name to keep an eye on in future years. Potentially equally as good as Isak Andersson or even Henry McNeal, Valquist nonetheless is still fairly raw for his age and may not see action until the qualifiers. If he does get on, he’s amazingly good at penalty kicks and may serve as a specialist.

#02 - 29 yrs - FC Ulselsheim - Seven caps - Alex PEDERSSEN
#03 - 22 yrs - Landsbyen Athletic - Uncapped - Nathaniel OLSEN
Fairly inexperienced at twenty-two, center-back Nathaniel Olsen is certainly a rising talent. The Landsbyen Athletic starter and former Hakifao College Soccer Assocation (HCSA) all-star has a polished game for a twenty-two year old. Still, despite his flair and tackling prowess, he’s a bit slow and has gone through numerous injuries, including the torn ACL that cost him the majority of his junior year. When healthy, he’s a solid center-back. But will he be?
#05 - 28 yrs - FC Pavlargen - Six caps - Adam HENRIKSON
One of the most unsung heroes of every Hakifao underdog run, Henrikson is a sturdy, consistent fullback who can play any position. Fairly short at five-eight, the defender is nevertheless capable and consistent both for the National Team and for underrated club team FC Pavlargen, based in Arøndeshölm. Henrikson is an excellent man-marker and decent tackler, and has the durability to play in another Cup.
#15 - 28 yrs - Feyjän Athletic - Three caps - Brynjar JONSSON
A relatively unknown right-back out of the newly-annexed Feyjän isles, Brynjar Jonsson nevertheless made quite the name for himself when he scored once and almost single-handedly shut out the Hakifao team in a Feyjän-Hakifao friendly. Now playing - despite his nationalist tendencies - on the Hakifao national team, he’ll get a chance to showcase his strong counterattack play and decent tackling.
#22 - 25 yrs - Ulselsheim Inferiore - One cap - Eric BERGEN
A great teammate, but Bergen is really a bit of a stopgap between players. Playing for the aptly-named Ulselsheim Inferiore, Bergen is a decent enough tackler and man-marker, but his counter attack skills leave much to be desired. As such, he’ll likely play as a sweeper during the tournament until he can polish his offensive game - but with Henrikson already covering that he may not get much pitch time to add to his lone cap.
#25 - 27 yrs - FC Ulselsheim - Eight caps - Alexei ISOAHO - ASSISTANT CAPTAIN
Alexei Isoaho is, if not the best defender on the Hakifao team, certainly the most well-known - the assistant captain has a highly polished game at center-back or a more compact left-back and is one of the best “pure” defenders there are. Isoaho tends not to deal with frivolous things like attacking, although his playmaking is fairly decent, sticking to his strong points of nearly every facet of defense. Twenty-seven but still a bold defender, Isoaho isn’t afraid to be carded, and this may lead to the Starlings’ downfall.
#29 - 25 yrs - City of Mjottsland - Uncapped - Nils JOHANNESSEN
The newcomer from the islands of Vestfjordur, young wing-back Nils Johannessen could be a talent to be reckoned with in the future. At twenty-five, due to a former apprenticeship to a blacksmith and three years in professional baseball, he’s still a bit raw, but his speed and energy make him a valuable asset on the Starlings. Johannessen certainly needs a bit of polish, but as one of the quickest fullbacks on the team he may be employed in counter-attack situations fairly often.

#07 - 30 yrs - Landsbyen Athletic - Eight caps - Sven PEDERSSEN
A wily attacking halfback from Landsbyen Athletic, Sven Pederssen is one of the better players on this team. The thirty-year-old midfielder is a strong playmaker and shooter, although he’s lost a step.
#08 - 24 yrs - FC Ulselsheim - Eight caps - Jonas WALQUIST
#11 - 30 yrs - Landsbyen Athletic - Eight caps - Elias BORG
Easily one of the most experienced players on this team with Herlek Korhonen's retirement, Elias Borg is still a bit of an introvert - passionate and driven, but probably not captain material. Still, despite his inability to subtract one from his jersey number and don an armband, he's still a brilliant shooter and a superstar in the box.
#17 - 27 yrs - City of Mjottsland - Three caps - Viljami KARLSON
With the dubious honor of playing for both the Mjottsland national team and the Hakifao national team at the same time, with the annexation of Mjottsland Karlson now gets to focus on the Starlings. On the pitch, Viljami Karlson is a decent right- or center-halfback, and he's one of the few players on the team who goes both ways consistently. His greatest asset is his durability and stamina; his weakest, agility, hampers him when he's on defense. Still, he's surprisingly fast for such a bulky frame, but his shooting and passing touch are still both strong. An intriguing player who should be able to challenge for a starting spot.
#18 - 23 yrs - Vestfjörður Athletic - Uncapped - Skjǫldr NILSSEN
One of the newest additions to the Hakifao team, Skjǫldr Nilssen has the greatest potential for international stardom out of any of the players on the team. Dedicated to the sport throughout college despite its unpopularity, he gained fame playing on the national team of Vestfjörður in a similar method to Brynjar Jonsson, scoring twice against the Hakifao team in a 3-2 victory. On the pitch now, he's fairly polished for a player of his age, and a brilliant passing touch that is potentially better than any other player on the team, and his shooting touch is decent enough to get by. Definitely someone to watch out for.
#19 - 30 yrs - FC Landsbyen - Three caps - Konstans MÄKELA
At thirty one of the team's more experienced players (yay low standards), FC Landsbyen halfback Konstans Mäkela has become well-known internationally for his reckless style of play. A center halfback in theory but an attacking midfielder in reality, Mäkela has managed to combine arrogance, recklessness, and talent into a player who's actually quite good at football. Expect a disproportionate number of a goals for a center-midfielder, a few cautions for poor conduct off the pitch, and possibly the best tournament Mäkela has ever had.
#30 - 26 yrs - Helgen-av-Johan - Uncapped - Kristian HALVORSÖN
One of the younger talents on the team, Kristian Halvorsön is already one of it's best playmakers. Tending to hang back on the left side in the mold of a Kyle Sturgeon-type player, he's still a decent shooter (PKs especially) and a top playmaker. Quite unlike Sturgeon, though, he has a fiery personality and won't hesitate to stand up for a teammate. This usually ends poorly.
#35 - 33 yrs - Landsbyen Athletic - Two caps - Mattias SAARINEN
While the experienced center-halfback isn’t expected to see much playing time, Mattias Saarinen’s experience and versatility have kept him on the Starlings. He tends to just hang back and pass around, but he’s still enough energy for a late-game creativity boost. In addition, Saarinen’s experience for Landsbyen Athletic means he’ll likely serve as a mentor to younger talents such as Nilssen and Halvorsön.

#06 - 29 yrs - FC Denison (SLL) - Eight caps - Daniel NIEMI
The lone Hakifao playing abroad in the Llamanean leagues - or any non-Northern league, for that matter, Daniel Niemi has the reputation as a jack-of-all-trades. Never really becoming particularly good, he’s still remarkably consistent for a striker in nearly every facet of the game. Still, with the emergence of Sigmund Aronsen, he soon may no longer be the best striker in Hakifao - Niemi’s very unlikely to win Man of the Match, but he’ll give a solid 7/10 wherever possible.
#12 - 27 yrs - Katterna Fjords FC - Two caps - Sigmund ARONSEN
Hailing from the newly-annexed isles of Mjottsland, Sigmund Aronsen has, despite playing for backwater local club Katterna Fjords in the second tier, managed to become one of the nation’s brightest talents at striker. With a vicious scoring touch and an aptitude for running into the box early and often, Aronsen tends to hang forwards a bit too often - once in his youth cautioned because the referee didn’t believe he was hanging around offsides so often by accident - but when he’s onsides, which is more often, he’s deadly.
#13 - 25 yrs - Landsbyen Athletic - One cap - Gordon ANDREASSON
Once an unheralded substitute out of the islands of Landsbyen, Gordon Andreasson’s goal to draw the Starlings even with a formidable Osarian squad in extra-time of the Round of Sixteen at the AOCAF sent the formerly-unknown striker into world prominence. While the Hakifao team already won, the diminutive striker’s grit and athletic drive more than make up for an innate lack of world-beating speed and agility.
#18 - 29 yrs - Acevøn Athletic - Three caps - Sofia LETONIEN
By playmaking Sofia Letonien is one of the best on the team, and she’s extremely versatile, but her athleticism is agility-intense rather than fast, and Letonien isn’t great at shooting from distance, although she is proficient at PKs and one-on-ones.

"The Hakifaos look like a million bucks, doesn't them? They just looks like someone you want to stick in your... Esportiva."
"I'm glad you finished that sentence the way you did. "
"They'd murder me in the sack. "

LONELY MULTIVERSE
The Approx Guide to the Equestrian States

Introduction

The Pony Republic of Equestrian States is a diverse country inhabited by several dozen sapient species, each contributing to the nation's proud culture of tolerance and giving the Equestrian States a reputation of compassion and kindness. Tradition and innovation have combined well in this North Pony Lands nation, rapidly bringing it into the modern world after centuries of self-imposed isolation from the rest of the multiverse. This Lonely Multiverse travel guide is designed to be the ultimate companion for any tourist (regardless of their species) visiting the Equestrian States, and is loaded with every tip and bit of advice one needs to have an safe and enjoyable stay.

History

Originally colonized by sapient equines (commonly referred to as ponies) from Magical Equestria over 2000 years ago, the Equestrian States was first established as a largely-autonomous overseas territory of its motherland. As a colony, the Equestrian States was fairly prosperous, developing a matriarchal society similar to that of Magical Equestria and other prominent Pony Lands nations. Several decades after the first ponies set hoof on the islands now part of the Equestrian States, however, the rise of a mysterious and chaotic entity known as Discord led to the government of the growing colony to adopt strict isolationist policies to avoid attracting the attention of Discord.

Several centuries later, the anarchic reign of Discord in the Pony Lands came to an end, though the Equestrian States remained firmly entrenched in its isolationist policies. Having formally declared its independence from Magical Equestria during the rule of Discord, the Equestrian States was reluctant to turn away from the policies which had allowed it to escape the turmoil faced by the rest of the region. Yet another cataclysmic event, just over a millennia ago, saw the known world embroiled in conflict with itself and the fledgling former colony sunk deeper into isolation for the next several centuries.

However, about 200 years ago, the long-standing policies separating the Equestrian States from the rest of the region gradually began to erode with the rapid growth of international maritime trade. Though it would take until just 50 years ago for the remaining isolationist policies to be overturned or made obsolete, foreigners began to take note of the Equestrian States and its northern location in the Pony Lands. What finally drove the ponies of the Equestrian States to abandon isolationism entirely was commerce, with the nation's location being perfect as a refueling and stopping point for ships traveling from outside the Pony Lands.

Active membership in the Coalition of Ponyist States (a military, economic, and political alliance famed for its quick, efficient, and merciless dealings with nations actively persecuting sapient equines and other non-humans) gave the Equestrian States reason to become heavily involved in international politics and trade. Within a decade, the Equestrians entered the modern era, utilizing magic in creative ways to avoid industrial pollution wherever possible and speed the nation's development.

Today, the Equestrian States is an advanced country that has successfully merged tradition, magic, and technology. With an economy dominated by tourism, agriculture, and the mining of precious minerals, the Equestrians have found their niche in the international community. Thanks to its location in the Pony Lands, the Equestrian States has become a travel hub for many visiting the region from around the world, and the nation is easily among the more prosperous and safe for foreigners to visit.

Geography & Climate

The Equestrian States is best described as an island nation. However, most Equestrians live on the largest island, which is referred to by locals as the mainland, due to its size and role as a population and commercial center for the country.

The mainland is mostly flat grassland and plains, though forests and hilly areas exist and are generally scattered throughout the island. Running north to south are the Harmony Mountains, named for Mt. Harmony near the capital city of Canterlot. The mountain range divides the mainland into eastern and western geographic regions, and was once home to dozens of active volcanoes. However, no eruption has occurred in the Harmony Mountains in over 800 years, and the range is believed to be inactive. The ancient volcanic activity on the mainland (and on many of the Equestrian States' smaller islands, as well) resulted in mineral deposits from which Equestrian miners have extracted gold, silver, and other valuable materials for export.

Two notable exceptions to the mainland's grassy majority are the Everfree Forest and Southern Desert. The Everfree Forest is more of a jungle than a temperate forest, and is widely considered the most dangerous region in the Equestrian States due to its large numbers of wild carnivorous species, some of which would be considered "mythical" by foreigners. Within the Everfree Forest is the city of Everfree, located along the banks of the Stampede River and home to the largest population of non-equines in the nation. A number of more typical temperate forests surround the Everfree Forest itself.

The Southern Desert is (as one might expect) a dry region located in a small pocket of flat land surrounded by the Harmony Mountains near the southern coast. The only major population center in the Southern Desert is the small city of Appleoosa, located in what could be considered by some as a cooler oasis.

But where things begin to get weird for the average tourist is the Equestrian States' weather. Due to the magical nature of many of its inhabitants, the Equestrians are fully capable of creating, manipulating, and otherwise controlling the clouds and weather. This gives them the ability to determine where and when in rains, snows, hails, or any other . The Equestrian government is very actively involved in coordinating the pegasai of the country to generate and control weather patterns favorable to the Equestrian States inhabitants (and its many farmers, in particular). As such, the odds of an Equestrian weatherpony giving an incorrect forecast are almost nonexistent, unless you happen to be in the Everfree Forest (the only region of the Equestrian States where the weather is practically impossible to control due to a prevalence of wild magic).

Travel

Travelling to the Equestrian States is generally easy, as most methods of interregional travel are available to visitors from outside the Pony Lands. Most international flights to the Equestrian States arrive at Canterlot's Harmony International Airport, but other regularly-used airports such as Manehattan's Royal International and Stalliongrad's Friendship Heights International are easy to find flights to. However, it should be noted that pilots flying to and from the Equestrian States internationally must receive additional certification due to the nature of the Equestrian States and much of the Pony Lands. Because of this additional requirement for pilots, some airlines do charge extra to cover the training fees.

Another common way of reaching the States is via sea. Manehattan's seaport is among the most active in the North Pony Lands, and isn't located far from the heart of the Equestrian States' largest city.

Once in the Equestrian States, there are many other options for travel. Rental cars, taxis, and busses are easy to find in the larger cities such as Manehattan, Stalliongrad, and Everfree, though one might notice that most vehicles are electric-powered. But while cars and busses are regularly used in some cities, there are also several in which their use is limited to emergency services (most notably in Ponyville and Canterlot's Old City district) or is totally banned (as is the case in Cloudsdale).

However, the limited use of automobiles is balanced out by the proliferation of trains for travel between and within cities. Some of the more prominent and historical lines (such as the Ponyville-Canterlot Express) still use steam-powered engines or high-speed trains designed to mimic the classical appearance of an Equestrian train. Subways are also a common feature in Equestrian cities, spreading underground to connect many places of interest for foreign tourists. Cloudsdale is the only city where cars, buses, and trains/subways are unavailable.

But in the end, the most common method of travel in the Equestrian States is one's own two feet (or whatever you have to walk on). Few Equestrians drive or use public transportation unless they have to, preferring to take in the clean air on their way from place-to-place.

Culture & Society

Religion

Any analysis of Equestrian culture and society must begin with its majority religion and guiding philosophy: Harmonism. A dualistic religion, it revolves around the physical sun and moon deities, Celestia and Luna, as well as the six principles known as the Elements of Harmony. The religion's origins are near-impossible to determination, though it is widely believed to begun shortly after ponykind first encountered Celestia and Luna over two millennia ago. Unlike other religions, Harmonism lacks a written scripture or centralized multiversal organization to create such writings, occasionally resulting in disagreements between Harmonists from different regions. For the sake of brevity, we will only be exploring the most common spiritual and secular beliefs held by those from the Equestrian States.

As stated earlier, the central beliefs of Harmonism include the worship of the Regal Sisters (Celestia and Luna) and adherence to the Elements of Harmony. Celestia and Luna are the two Princess rulers of distant Magical Equestria, though Luna has (in recent years) begun to spend considerable time aiding the C'tan in preserving peace throughout the Pony Lands. Immortal and, according to spiritual Harmonists, capable of moving celestial bodies through magic, the two Regal Sisters are worshiped (or at least respected) by ponies throughout the multiverse as living goddesses. Some have recently begun to question the actual power of the Sisters, though it is widely accepted among ponykind that they are the two most powerful magical beings in existence.

The six Elements of Harmony are Honesty, Laughter, Kindness, Generosity, Loyalty, and Magic. These Elements exist both as philosophical concepts as well as physical objects capable of great power that contain the purest magical essence of the aforementioned virtues. The philosophical aspects of the Elements are more central to Harmonist faith as a set of morals to guide one throughout life. They are, for the most part, fairly self-explanatory, except for Magic. The sixth element has been connected not only to the ability of equine Harmonists to use magical spells, but also to the drive for new knowledge or understanding. It also has been connected to the power of friendship, and is mentioned in the most common Harmonist saying: "Friendship is Magic".

However, Harmonism has expanded from its spiritual roots (particularly as more non-equines are exposed to harmonist teachings) to become a secular philosophy as well. Secular Harmonists generally try to follow the virtues of Harmonism, though they generally do not believe that the Regal Sisters are physical goddesses. The expansion of Secular Harmonism has also led to the traditional virtues being adopted and woven into other religions as well, such as Christianity. Excluding the overwhelmingly Spiritual Harmonist equine population of the Equestrian States, the most common religion is Harmonist Christianity, which is especially popular among the human inhabitants of the nation.

Language

Traditionally, ponies have spoken in their native Equestrian tongue which is common throughout the Pony Lands. However, since the emergence of the Equestrian States into the international community, laws have been passed requiring citizens to be capable of speaking multiple languages. The most common non-Equestrian language is easily English, which is spoken by approximately two-thirds of the population. It should be noted that some English words have been altered by Equestrians to better fit the equine majority, as the use of "everypony", "anypony", "hoofball", and other such words are modifications of the more standard English words. Mastery of many different languages is especially common among Unicorns, and as they are generally the ones more involved in business, are easy enough to find for foreign visitors. Numerous translating services exist throughout the Equestrian States, and airport bookstores generally contain a plethora of multilingual dictionaries for purchase.

Food

As one might expect from a nation dominated by a species of herbivores, many traditional Equestrian dishes are vegetarian in nature. The proliferation of such food is also furthered by the general lack of agriculture for the purpose of raising up animals for the slaughter. To hurt another living creature is, to many Equestrians, simply unthinkable. However, the Equestrian States is not only inhabited by equines, but also by griffons, dragons, and humans (among others). Restaurants do exist to cater to these non-equine species, and do serve a wide variety of meats imported from outside of the region. That being said, it would be unwise to be seen in public eating a hamburger made from beef or any other meat product as many Equestrians are disgusted by such foods. This can make finding food difficult in smaller cities and in the nicer areas of the larger ones. A general tip would be: if your waiter looks like a herbivore, don't ask them for a cheeseburger or steak. Equestrian cafes are fairly creative with what they can do with non-meat products, and the bread and pastries are oftentimes better than what you might find in other nations.

Drink in the Equestrian States also differs significantly from other nations around the multiverse, as the most common alcoholic beverage is hard cider, which can be found at virtually every bar, pub, and restaurant. Ponies generally refrain from drinking too heavily, but other non-human sapients such as griffons are known to consume vast quantities of alcohol in a single sitting. We advise our human readers to graciously decline any drinking challenges offered, as one is unlikely to win, and drunk griffons can be notoriously temperamental. Beer is a distant second to cider, in terms of both popularity and availability, though bars and eateries which cater to human tourists will often keep domestic Equestrian brands in stock.

Inter-Species Relations

As the Equestrian States is home to a wide range of species, it is practically impossible for any visitor to the country to avoid seeing a member of another species, regardless of where they might be. Unicorns could pull this off in certain neighborhoods of Canterlot, and Earth Ponies could do the same in isolated rural areas, though foreigners will often stumble across other species upon entry into the Equestrian States as customs officials are perhaps the most diverse Equestrian demographic.

Relations between the three major pony races have not always been smooth, and some tensions still exist today despite the educational system's teaching of acceptance and tolerance. However, inter-species violence is very rare within the Equestrian States, as is violence in general, with the possible exceptions coming from dragons, griffons, and other more naturally-aggressive species. Angering a dragon is about as dumb as it sounds, and is not advised unless one has a death wish.

Visitors to the Equestrian States are also advised to avoid appearing speciesist to locals, as Equestrian society could be described as having a herd mentality, where an attack against or insult towards one person might be considered an attack on all those around that person. Thus, some words to avoid using in the Equestrian States are: horse, mule, foal, or donkey. Calling a pony any of those terms is likely to result in a backlash towards the offending individual, as they are considered to be offensive unless one is actually speaking to a sapient horse or donkey, which are both easy to tell apart from ponies through their size and general lack of bright-colored fur or manes.

Equestrian Host Cities for the 58th Baptism of Fire

The Capital City: Canterlot

Canterlot is the capital city of the Equestrian States and one of its oldest. Located on the steep slopes of Mt. Harmony and the surrounding lands, Canterlot has evolved over time into a burgeoning metropolis that reflects the qualities the nation that houses its government in the city. The capital’s traditional sophisticated architecture has been almost seamlessly blended with the more modern styles to make it perhaps the most visually-appealing cities in the Equestrian States.

Founded by the first wave of equine settlers that came to what is now the Equestrian States from Magical Equestria over a millennium ago, Canterlot was originally named New Canterlot as inspired by the capital of the settlers' origin. However, when the then-colony was cut off from its mother country, the memories of the old Canterlot began to fade and the name was shortened to simply Canterlot. Contact with Magical Equestria after the Equestrian States emerged from isolation in the northernmost parts of the Pony Lands resulted in the existence of two Canterlots and the Equestrian Parliament briefly considered renaming the city again out of respect for its older cousin, but then decided against it.

By far, the best place to visit in Canterlot is Harmony Castle. One of the oldest structures in the Equestrian States, the castle was constructed by unicorn builders as part of the original colonization effort. Currently home to the royal family of the Equestrian States, Harmony Castle also houses Parliament’s formal meeting chambers and is a regular stop on most tourists’ stays in Canterlot. The castle is open to tours most days of the week, tickets for which should be acquired no less than one week prior to the tour date on the Castle’s official webpage.

Royal Equestria Stadium

Location: Canterlot
Capacity: 98,625
Tenants: Equestrian States National Team
Will host:
MD1: Frenline Delpha vs. Varmelle
Final: SF1 Winner vs. SF2 Winner

A beautiful masterpiece of Equestrian magical engineering, Royal Equestria Stadium is a true cathedral of hoofball located near the heart of Canterlot. Though nowhere near as old as other iconic venues throughout the multiverse, there's no doubt that the Equestrian States national team's home stadium is the country's best-known venue. Built less than a decade ago, Royal Equestria Stadium was designed to be a reflection of the Equestrian States, combining natural beauty, magic, and modernity, which is best found in the stadium's magically-sculpted crystalline roof. With a seated capacity just under 100,000 ponies, Royal Equestria Stadium is no stranger to hosting major sporting events as the finals of the 70th World Cup, 57th Cup of Harmony, 26th Cygnus Cup, and the 29th and 32nd Di Bradini Cups were all played at the venue, in addition to the third place match of the 67th World Cup and annual domestic cup finals. Located within walking distance uphill from Canterlot's historic old town district, Royal Equestria Stadium is easily accessible to hoofball fans staying in the city's many hotels.
Grand Regal Stadium

Tenants: Canterlot Royals
Will host:
MD2: San Llera vs. Albagaria
MD3: Erbsted & Calcoon vs. Varmelle
MD4: Frenline Delpha vs. Windsor Islands
MD5: Windsor Islands vs. Erbsted & Calcoon
Semifinals: QF1 Winner vs. QF2 Winner

Home to the Canterlot Royals, one of the top Equestrian teams historically, Grand Regal Stadium is the newest of the venues hosting matches at the Baptism of Fire after the Royals decided to replace the aging Equestria Dome with a more modern stadium. Situated in the heart of the capital city, not far from the revered Royal Equestria Stadium, the venue first saw international use at the 70th World Cup finals and will be hosting a semifinal during the 58th Baptism of Fire.
Star Stadium

Location: Canterlot
Capacity: 59,250
Tenants: Canterlot Stars
Will host:
MD1: El Gregoria vs. Affiliated South Califan Sprawls
MD2: Flick Jostle vs. El Gregoria
MD3: Sylvackia vs. Affiliated South Califan Sprawls
MD4: Korchayk vs. Affiliated South Califan Sprawls
MD5: Seventeen Syllables vs. Korchayk
Round of 16: Seed #1 vs. Seed #16

Located in the suburbs of Canterlot, Star Stadium's name is derived from its glittering exterior as well as the fact that it is home to the Canterlot Stars. Though only the third-largest hoofball venue in the Equestrian States' capital city, the stadium can seat nearly 60,000 and is often packed to the brim with supporters for Canterlot Stars matches. The Stars are often viewed as being the 'other' club from Canterlot, second to the more successful Royals, but still regularly contend in the United League. Regardless, the local fans are devoted to their club and tend to be a bit showy despite being from the middle class of Equestrian society.

The Metropolis: Manehattan

The most populous city in the Equestrian States, Manehattan is arguably the economic capital of the nation. Although the equine residents of the city might not be typical for foreign visitors, the city is the most normal of any Equestrian city when looking at its architecture and attractions. Most cities were reluctant to industrialize as the Equestrian States entered the modern world, but it was not the case with Manehattan, where industry and commerce are dominant.

One of the first settlements formed in the initial colonization of the 'States, Manehattan has always been viewed as one of the most important cities in the Equestrian States. Home to a sophisticated upper class and a large, rougher, lower class group of laborers, the denizens of Manehattan are second only to Everfree when looking at diversity. Originally, when the Equestrian States was ruled only by a powerful aristocracy, Manehattan rivaled Canterlot for number of nobles, but was also a breeding ground for resentment. Advocating reform, the underprivileged lower classes eventually pushed the Equestrian government towards becoming a constitutional monarchy. The spirit of innovation and advocacy that caused those early reformers to act is still prevalent in the city’s inhabitants to this day.

Manehattan Industrial Park

MD3: Windsor Islands vs. San Llera
MD4: Erbsted & Calcoon vs. Albagaria
MD5: Albagaria vs. Varmelle
Round of 16: Seed #5 vs. Seed #12

Manehattan Industrial Park has one of the least-appropriate venue names in the Equestrian States, being located far from the city's actual industrial district. Rather than being an accurate indicator of the stadium's location, the name merely refers to the Manehattan Manticores' original home and their largely lower-class supporters. Boasting some of the nations's more rambunctious fans, the Manticores are often able to sell out every match they play, and fill the stadium to the brim.
Derby Field

Location: Manehattan
Capacity: 65,000
Tenants: Manehattan Dragons
Will host:
MD1: Velstaende vs. Flardania
MD2: Eupheos Anetus vs. Flardania
MD3: Vermark vs. Eupheos Anetus
MD4: Vermark vs. Velstaende
MD5: Matthewsiania vs. Kazirstan

Situated in the financial district of Manehattan, Derby Field is one of the oldest stadiums in the Equestrian States and is home to the equally old Manehattan Dragons, one of the first Equestrian professional hoofball clubs and were recently relegated from the United League. With a traditional brick and glass exterior, it holds to the theme of architecture that is present in many Manehattan buildings.

The Heart of the Country: Ponyville

Ponyville is among the most attractive cities in the Equestrian States, located west of the massive Everfree Forest (see the 'Everfree' entry in this guide for more details), and along the banks of the Mane River. A pleasant city that, like Canterlot, has incorporated the conveniences of the modern world with the traditional Equestrian city, Ponyville holds a growing role in the economy of the Equestrian States as a center of transportation between Canterlot, Everfree, Manehattan, and (to a degree) Cloudsdale. Its central location makes it an almost mandatory stop for any tourist visiting the western half of the Equestrian States mainland.

Originally a fairly common Equestrian village in the country during its long period of isolation from the rest of the Pony Lands, Ponyville has long been seen as the best example of the typical, picturesque, Equestrian town. However, with the Equestrian States' emergence into the international scene, Ponyville's location led to its quick development as a national travel hub. But, as opposed to most cities in other countries where transportation played a major role in growth, the efforts of the Equestrian government to maintain a relatively clean environment by creating a vast public transportation system, kept Ponyville from becoming a smog-choked city.

With Ponyville being a 'green city', the surrounding rivers, forests, and grasslands are nearly as pristine now as they were when the town was first founded. This environmental beauty is only part of Ponyville's appeal, which also comes from the small-town feel of the Old Town district. Having changed very little over the years, Ponyville's Old Town is probably its best tourism revenue generator, as visitors can browse shops and other stores for small keepsakes and souvenirs. But the impact of sport cannot be forgotten when talking about Ponyville. The town has long been a competitive force in Equestrian domestic leagues across multiple sports, and the most popular of these teams is the hoofball club, Ponyville United.

MD4: Eupheos Anetus vs. Matthewsiania
MD5: Flardania vs. Vermark
Quarterfinals: SR1 Winner vs. SR2 Winner

Elements Stadium is named after the Elements of Harmony, the guiding principles of the majority faith of the Equestrian States: Harmonism. Home to Ponyville United, the most successful Equestrian club in domestic and UICA competitions, Elements Stadium is one of the better known venues in the Equestrian States and has hosted matches in every international hoofball tournament played in the nation as well as a Globe Cup final. Visiting fans often enjoy the stadium's central position alongside the crystal-clear Mane River, not far from some of Ponyville's largest and nicest hotels.

The City in the Sky: Cloudsdale

Cloudsdale's name is no accident. Located literally in the clouds, over a million pegasi call the city their home. But, without a doubt, Cloudsdale's most defining feature is what it is made from: clouds. Although most non-Equestrians would find this to be beyond bizarre, for the Equestrian States, the ability to control and manipulate clouds is something that pegasi have been doing for thousands of years using their own unique form of magic to sculpt cities such as Cloudsdale. Due to its nature, Cloudsdale can float from one location to another, but rarely is ever more than 35 kilometers from the outskirts of Ponyville, meaning that visitors whose teams are playing in Coudsdale can easily stay in Ponyville, which is less disorienting. Transportation to Cloudsdale is provided by the Equestrian Air Transport Authority via high-capacity, zeppelin-like balloons.

The cloud city was first founded by a group of pegasi colonists when the initial settlers landed on the Equestrian States’ main island over a millennium ago. For hundreds of years, the pegasi were the only creatures to inhabit the city as they were the only ones capable of using the clouds as solid material. Eventually, unicorn mages were able to devise a spell that would enable other creatures to trot among the clouds with the pegasi in cities such as Cloudsdale. Such spells didn't last any longer than a day, but the magic was slowly improved, allowing for a week to pass before the magic had to be recast.

Aside from its strange architecture, Cloudsdale offers numerous attractions to tourists interested in exploring the differing cultures of the three sapient equine species. One such site is the Cloudsdale Weather Factory, located near the edge of the city. There, pegasi employed by the Equestrian government manufacture the weather clouds that then bring rain to the surrounding farmlands. For tourists who are intrigued by the magical elements of the Equestrian States and the Pony Lands, this is a must-see. Also attracting tourists are the numerous look-out points spread along the edges of the city’s main cloud layer. From there, the lands surrounding Cloudsdale are clearly visible on most days, except when rain is scheduled.

Sky-High Coliseum

Location: Cloudsdale
Capacity: 65,000
Tenants: Cloudsdale Flyers, Cloudsdale Colts
Will host:
MD1: Vermark vs. Matthewsiania
MD2: Kazirstan vs. Vermark
MD3: Flardania vs. Matthewsiania
MD4: Kazirstan vs. Flardania
MD5: Velstaende vs. Eupheos Anetus
Round of 16: Seed #4 vs. Seed #13

Like many hoofball venues in the Equestrian States, Sky-High Coliseum's name was given for a reason as it floats a nice 2.5 kilometers above ground, with nothing besides the clouds separating it from the grassy plains below. Sky-High Coliseum's use as a venue for international competitions has been criticized in the past, as the hesitation of foreign supporters to sit in the stadium itself generally allows the Equestrians to gain an almost unbeatable home-field advantage. Though the ability to add and remove entire sections of the stadium on a whim allows for its capacity to be adjusted according to the scale of whatever event it's hosting, and thus is still a popular choice for international competitions.

The Old and Not-So-Small Mining City: Stalliongrad

Excluding the several cloud cities, Stalliongrad is the highest-altitude city in the Equestrian States, located on the opposite side of the Harmony Mountain range from Canterlot. Famed for the rich diamond and gold mines nearby, Stalliongrad is a wealthy city, but it has not forgotten where its economic strength comes from.

Prior to the discovery of gold and diamonds in the mountains, Stalliongrad was a very small town situated near the start of a small river that led down to the plains below. However, when rare minerals were first discovered, the small town quickly grew into a small city. Over the last 100 years, Stalliongrad has grown to become one of the Equestrian States' larger cities and the largest east of Canterlot. Populated mainly by unicorns and earth ponies, who together are incredibly efficient miners, the city is famed for its abundance of wealth and economic power, but also for being one of the country’s rougher towns.

Diamond Park

MD5: Sylvackia vs. El Gregoria
Quarterfinals: SR3 Winner vs. SR4 Winner

Built into the very sides of the mountains, a carved overhang provides shelter from the sun, and unicorn magic gives Diamond Park protection from destructive rainfall when the Ministry of Weather Control schedules it. Named for the seams of gems and precious metals that can still be seen crisscrossing the roof, Diamond Park is a beautiful stadium that stands out in a city that has become wealthy through nearby mines. (OOC: I'm aware that the above image does not fit with the description given. Add one or two tiers and replace the overhang with one made of rock, and you've got a mental image of Diamond Park.)

Wild and Wonderful: Everfree

The city of Everfree is located in the central region of the Equestrian States, northeast of Canterlot. However, Everfree is perhaps the most bizarre city in the Equestrian States, or at least by the standards of the equine citizens of the nation. Surrounded by the dense, jungle-like, Everfree Forest, the city is home to the largest percentage of non-equine citizens of any Equestrian city due to the city's unique nature.

In the Equestrian States it is almost unheard of for an unexpected storm to spring up. This is not because the nation is dry and barren (the Equestrian States is actually rather fertile), but because of its magical occupants. Pegasi (one of the three major sapient equine species) are naturally and magically blessed with the ability to move clouds and generate weather. However, there is only one region in the Equestrian States in which that is not the case. The Everfree Forest (for reasons which are still being debated among the scientific community) is not subject to the same laws of nature as the rest of the country, with clouds that move without the aid of a pegasus. Elsewhere in the world, this would be considered normal, but in the Equestrian States it makes the Forest peculiar. In addition to the Everfree Forest's strange weather patterns, the diverse (and oftentimes deadly) animal life long dissuaded any Equestrians from attempting to forge deep into the Forest.

However, when non-equines began to move in greater numbers to the Equestrian States following its emergence from isolation, humans and other non-equine sapients found the region to be more natural, and began to form a city near the center of the massive jungle. Now, decades later, the city has grown immensely, but still is inhabited mostly by non-equines (such as humans, griffons, dragons, and others). For human tourists, the city of Everfree is more likely to remind them of a normal human city elsewhere in the world. Granted, the immense jungle-like Everfree Forest is still unusual, but there are far more humans in Everfree than one would see elsewhere in the pony-dominated Equestrian States.

Wild Grounds

Location: Everfree
Capacity: 56,500
Tenants: Everfree Forest HC

MD1: Flick Jostle vs. Korchayk
MD2: Korchayk vs. Sylvackia
MD3: Seventeen Syllables vs. Flick Jostle
MD4: El Gregoria vs. Seventeen Syllables
MD5: Affiliated South Califan Sprawls vs. Flick Jostle
Round of 16: Seed #8 vs. Seed #9

Wild Grounds is appropriately named, being home to the ever-so-slightly crazed supporters of Everfree Forest HC and located near the very edges of the jungle. With a breathtaking view of the city of Everfree, the stadium offers one of the best atmospheres for hoofball in the country and has been a regular stop for the national team ever since the Ponies began to play outside of Canterlot.

The Quiet Woods: Whitetail

A pleasant city that has even more of a small town feel than Ponyville, Whitetail is locked within the leafy embrace of Whitetail Woods (from which the city takes its name). The city is far from being one of the larger tourist destinations for foreigners. However, with its polite population and beauty in spring and fall, it is a popular destination for visitors from other parts of the Equestrian States.

The small size of Whitetail leads many to assume that it is not very old, but are incorrect in thinking so. Whitetail has found itself largely free from the immense population growth that came with the Equestrian States' emergence from isolation over two decades ago. Without explosive growth, Whitetail's residents have developed a relatively close-knit community (even by Equestrian standards), and are considered to be among the nicest in the country. Foreigners are a rare sight in Whitetail, especially non-equines, so visitors are typically recognized immediately and welcomed by the locals.

As the majority of tourists visiting Whitetail come to the city for no other reason than to relax, the city's many heavily-forested parks and gorgeous gardens are immensely popular though rarely feel overcrowded.

Shady Grove

Image

Location: Whitetail
Capacity: 43,650

MD2: Varmelle vs. Windsor Islands
MD3: Albagaria vs. Frenline Delpha
MD4: Varmelle vs. San Llera
MD5: San Llera vs. Frenline Delpha

In almost total contrast with the crazier supporters at venues such as Wild Grounds and Manehattan Industrial Park, the local fans of the Whitetail Foresters bring a friendly and laid-back vibe to their Shady Grove. The Foresters are one of the more historic Equestrian clubs and are particularly well-known for producing some of the nation's best young talents who have later developed into international stars at foreign clubs.

Liaison Officers for Teams in the Equestrian States

As mentioned in our bid, the hosts have assigned each participating team a liaison officer from whichever nation their group stage matches are held in that speaks the native language(s) of their assigned team. The officer's name, age, gender, and species have been provided to you for your team to interact with however you choose. Whether they are used as an interpreter, tour guide, scapegoat, or anything else really is entirely up to you. As the Equestrian States is a rather unusual country, they might also serve as a local for your team to interact with and play a role in an RP which might include a player reacting to their potentially unfamiliar surroundings, whether its coming face-to-nuzzle with a pink-furred pegasus for the first time or whatever else, they're there for you to use as a character. If you're not interested in using your team's assigned companion? Totally fine, you're welcome to completely ignore their existence; you won't be penalized for not including them in an RP if you don't want to. The following are each team's assigned liaison officers:

Affiliated South Califan Sprawls: Grassy Knoll (Earth Pony - Female) - 45 y/o
Albagaria: Golden Heart (Unicorn - Female) - 39 y/o
El Gregoria: Sheerstorm (Pegasus - Male) - 35 y/o

San Llera departed San Llera for the Equestrian States today, but not before playing a closed-door friendly against local club team Llerana SC's U-23 side. Apparently, San Llera cruised to a 5-0 victory behind a hat trick from Jan Capo. Afterwards, manager Jon Lleranerus shared his thoughts:

On the victory:
The scoreline seemed positive at 5-0 but I was a bit disappointed in the possession we had against our opposition. For a full-strength national team to at times struggle to find possession against a club U-23 team is kind of pitiful. Despite this, we finished clinically, especially Jan, and we deserved the win. The biggest positive is a further realization of our weaknesses. There isn't much time but we will work on possession and we will work on some basics that I noticed we lacked.

On character of controversial striker Jan Capo
Jan has a very hot temper and sometimes makes reckless decisions but he trains as hard as anybody and I respect him for that.

On chances in Baptism of Fire
Right now, we're taking it one game at a time. Our focus is in beating Erbsted & Calcoon and it will stay that way until the game.

On difficulty of competition
They're not easy teams to beat, from what I've seen. But I guess we'll see, won't we?

On takeaways from camp:
Camp has allowed me to adjust the lineup a little bit, to train on somethings and to get our players in form and fitness. But you never know exactly where you stand until you play. So we'll play, and hopefully we'll win.
There are many places, and one such place is Rushmore.

Managerial election results

Postby Affiliated South Califan Sprawls » Fri Feb 27, 2015 2:58 am

The Football Assembly met in Santa Barbara for the final round of voting on managerial and coaching staff positions. In ASCS, players, fans, coaches, administrators and reporters all vote on the main leadership roles, and they have the option of specifically mandating how they do their work, too. At this meeting, no such fetters were placed on the winners. The only trend across all elections was a very strong voter preference for former internationals with dozens of WCQ appearances.

Manager
1 Oswaldo Garabona (OSR) 2550
2 Ralf Huber (Kern) 2350
3 Falerina Jomphe 2300
4 Nadezhda Prokhorova 2250
5 Godvin Nes 2150
6 Haidou Zhongyuan 2050
7 Bela Ceh 2000
8 Onofre Reynoso Lovato 1850
9 Chidiebele Guttman 1650
10 Artis Pariseau (Kern) 1500
Vid Baldwin (San Bernardino) 1500
12 Marion Yotam (Riverside) 1150
13 Roseann Télesphore (Kern) 1050
14 Zlato Cokan 950
15 Driskol Romà (Imperial) 900
16 Deb Ristoff 300
The 70-year-old Osarian fixture who steered the Diezcondado to their first CoH appearance is back for one last hurrah. When open war broke out, Garabona decided not to lose the mild climate or the seaside views, tracking news from the front and hopping from one FSC coastal locale to the next to be as far as possible from the fighting. Since then, he has lived openly in Santa Monica, a beach bum with interests in a wide swathe of international used car lots and fleet vehicle depots, and continues to quietly donate food, medicine and creature comforts to community centers, schools and military units defending ASCS in the border skirmishes. More of a good neighbor than a partisan, Garabona mostly avoids voting on contentious issues and keeps a low political profile.

Garabona was the FSC manager who walked away from the total-football-like 'El Método' formation that defined the early Federal Team. El Método, or the Califas Method, originated in Bakersfield with the first domestic league champion side and became the dominant formation in their first qualifying cycle. Each player cycles through every position except keeper at some point in the game, with a player-manager elected after the last match using on-field signals to shift between freeform play, man assignments and a handful of fluid pseudo-formations.

In a brief interview after winning this election, Garabona suggested he was considering a partial return to El Método, though it would involve teaching total football to a new generation that can barely remember sharing a federation with Bakersfield. The end result probably won't involve letting kids with little to no international experience usurp him. In the past, Oswaldo has been partial to a balanced but defensive-leaning style using unusual or altered formations and spreading the play time around, not as evenly as in the player-manager era, but more than average.

Though his pregame rituals change constantly and can seem bizarre, in on-field matters he focuses on execution and consistency, urging his players not to dwell on the past because success will come if they work the plan. On the other hand, he has never been afraid to make unusual substitutions, use trick plays or take risks when he felt it was necessary. He had a high level of buy-in from the old Federal Team and was popular in the media - a darling of the sports pages when el Diezcondado were invited to the Cup of Harmony - but raises mixed emotions in his home country, where he is best remembered for an unorthodox decision that cost his side the big game.

Bakersfield defector Ralf Huber, former midfielder and part-time player-manager/coach, was a surprise runner-up. He jumped past the more conventional domestic choices on a lot of second-place votes -- and a handful of tough early wins in the player-manager era, running El Método. His strong finish in the managerial race led some commentators to suggest he would be a bigger challenge to Artis Pariseau in the defensive coach election than previously expected.
Defense coach
1 Falerina Jomphe 2300
2 Ralf Huber (Kern) 2200
3 Onofre Reynoso Lovato 2050
4 Artis Pariseau (Kern) 2000
Nadezhda Prokhorova 2000
Driskol Romà (Imperial) 2000
7 Marion Yotam (Riverside) 1850
8 Zlato Cokan 250
Thirty-seven year old Falerina Jomphe was one of the original defenders for El Diezcondado, notching 46 caps in World Cup qualifying before being cut by Garabona for WC64. Now his colleague (Califan managers are more like tacticians than generals), Jomphe will be expected to contribute tactical and moral support on a daily basis. She knows every angle of the pitch from her days exhibiting El Método, and managed AC Republicans to a fifth-place finish in FLSC, landing four points outside of the Globe Cup qualifying zone. Even though she has clarified in interviews that she is not a republican, her affiliation with the policlub through their league side was expected to hinder her campaign, and may have contributed to her only narrowly besting Huber and Reynoso. Jomphe refuses to discuss the war or the border skirmishes, and as far as anyone can tell, she stayed neutral throughout with the hope of keeping her options open, anticipating precisely that she might manage a side like Republicans. In the Califan context, republicans are radical dissidents, unpopular but not purged or persecuted; they envision a political system not unlike some countries currently engaged in low-level conflict with ASCS.

The defensive coaching role also includes coaching the goalkeepers, though Jomphe quickly selected Imperial County refugee and former FSC backup goalie Driskol Romà as her assistant for such matters. Romà is from near Calexico and had a deep run in the Champions' Cup with Buffalo, a CSL team from distant UKCNA, before fleeing the war to coach youth clubs across Atlantian Oceania. Thirty years old, he is the youngest member of the coaching staff and an outspoken moderate socialist by Califan standards. He is reported to have chosen ASCS as his new home for mostly career reasons, without a strong preference for either its revolutionary order or the democratic socialism that has prevailed in the Calexico sprawl.
Attack coach
1 Godvin Nes 2300
2 Chidiebele Guttman 2150
3 Haidou Zhongyuan 1900
4 Bela Ceh 1800
5 Roseann Télesphore (Kern) 900
6 Vid Baldwin (San Bernardino) 150
The rock in the FSC midfield, 40-year-old Godvin Nes of San Diego is tied with the era and federation's top striker Ceh for the most WCQ and total caps at 46 and 87 respectively going into WC65. A menace in the Champions' Cup and Globe Cup for Calexico, Nes defected from Imperial County when war broke out, providing material and moral support for the Califan effort from his coastal hometown. He survived a shipyard bombing and became a youth coach when hostilities simmered, eventually managing the amateur San Diego Federal University side before his turn as an attack coach for Series A mid-table club Santa Barbara City, the highest-scoring side in the Football League. Nes won a handful of early WCQ games in the FSC player-manager era; as a player, he scored eight goals - all in qualifying - with a more level-headed style than the flashy Zhongyuan, the set-piece expert. Both played in all four CoH ties. Nes is a left-wing communist, known for his key role in covert operations during the revolution that produced FSC in his youth.
Fourth tactician
1 Onofre Reynoso Lovato 2500
2 Artis Pariseau (Kern) 2450
3 Nadezhda Prokhorova 2400
4 Haidou Zhongyuan 2350
5 Bela Ceh 2050
6 Chidiebele Guttman 1950
7 Ralf Huber (Kern) 1450
8 Zlato Cokan 1350
9 Vid Baldwin (San Bernardino) 1000
Roseann Télesphore (Kern) 1000
11 Marion Yotam (Riverside) 750
A role unique to ASCS, the fourth tactician can be consulted on almost all matters and is expected to provide moral support, but doesn't have as much decisive authority in the heat of battle. Only former Diezcondado starters had much of a chance in this election, with sweeper Reynoso taking a close race after disappointing results in the managerial and defense coach elections. Voters clearly favored defense for the fourth tactician role. Reynoso broke a lot of CSL strikers' hearts for her hometown Santa Maria club and played in almost every FSC game, racking up 46 WCQ caps and 84 total caps going into WC65, a starter in all four CoH matches as well. Reynoso is an odd mix of republican and loyalist, reportedly staying about as neutral as possible throughout the war without defecting or even associating with the republican policlub.

PRIDNESTROVIA EMERGES VICTORIOUS IN PRE-BAPTISM OF FIRE FRIENDLY AGAINST FRENLINE DELPHA

By Gustav Tyumenov

Forward Boyan Radev evades Frenlin midfielder Trinity Gerbon during Pridnestrovia's second pre-tournament friendly in Sheriff Stadium, Tiraspol.

TIRASPOL - Two free kicks from half-Balgarski forward Boyan Radev gave Pridnestrovia its first international victory in football after the six-year international absence mandated by the Great Field Marshal Stepan Stepanovich Stepanenko in protest to the country's status as a "client state" of the Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft.

Midfielder Trinity Gerbon of Frenline Delpha kept the hosts close, but eventually the Red-Greens were able to pull away in the 89th minute thanks to Radev's second goal from a free kick.

The Pridnestrovians established themselves early on, with Boyan Radev scoring the first of two goals in the 3rd minute when he was brought down by a Frenlin defender just 17 feet from the box. At such a distance, it was supposed to be a penalty kick, but the referee decided (very controversially) that it was just a free kick. But nevertheless, Radev stepped up to the ball and sent it beyond the grips of the Frenlin keeper and into the back of the net.

Four minutes later, Frenlin midfielder Trinity Gerbon equalized for the visitors, scoring a beautiful left-footed hook shot that Svyatoslav Alkaev was not able to prevent meeting the back of the net.

Another Frenlin midfielder, Wesley Staple, was injured in the 38th minute after slipping on the turf and twisting his ankle.

In the second half, manager Werner Ceausescu ordered his lads to create offside traps, which immediately began to frustrate the hosts. At least ten offsides were recorded in just the first ten minutes of the second half.

The deadlock was finally broken after Germanski-born Peter Schermer was brought down hard 32 yards from the goal. He and Radev lined up for the free kick, but he didn't touch the ball, letting Radev have the honors of taking the kick. The ball spun out of the hands of the keeper, only meeting resistance when it encountered the netting.

"The draw against Thereisnogodistan has given us the necessary motivation to take us all the way to the win," Ceausescu said in a post-match press conference. "Now we hope to carry this momentum forward to our final pre-tournament friendly, and then into the Baptism of Fire itself."

Pridnestrovia's final friendly will be against Abanhfleft, and it will be held in the May 28 Stadium in Riuwiee, capital of Abanhfleft.

Harmony International Airport, The Equestrian States

The Korchayki National Football Team's jet had landed. Its red, white, yellow and green livery glistened in the Equestrian sun. As the engines wound down, the thirty players and the coaching staff began to disembark. Osman Hakkı, the promising youngster, lit a cigarette as he stepped outside the plane. The physio, Dr. Balkır Vahide Müşfik, tutted audibly, causing Osman to spin around in anger.

"What now?" said Osman, exasperated and indignant.

"It's just that smoking drastically affects your athletic performance, Osman," responded the Doctor. "You're a talented young man, don't throw it away."

"I can do whatever I want," shouted Osman, his cheeks flushed red with anger. "I'm not a child, I'm 18, I can make mistakes!"

"Mistakes, sure. Cancer and throwing away your career, not so much," interrupted Balkır.

"Screw you Balkır!" yelled Osman, advancing on Müşfik. "What would you know about talent, you boring old man?"

"Ah yes, doctors," retorted Dr. Balkır, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "By far the least talented members of society."

Osman approached the doctor, positioned himself squarely in his face, brought the cigarette to his lips and exhaled smoke in Balkır's face. In retaliation, Balkır snatched the cigarette and extinguished it with foot. Osman threw a punch which connected with the doctor's chin. Balkır stumbled backwards, but then lurched forwards and jabbed Osman in his face. The players and coaching staff had caught wind of the fight and began to rush up the stairs towards the two, who were now grappling. The captain, Yusuf Zinnur, grabbed Osman and pulled him off the doctor. Whilst this was happening, the assistant manager, Kasım Endeş Bahadır Yahçe, restrained Dr. Müşfik. Osman screamed expletives at the doctor as Zinnur pulled him away. The physio simply adjusted his tie and walked down the stairs. Rauf Zafer Tangör sighed as he walked to the team bus. The tournament hadn't even started yet and there was already an uncomfortable level of drama.

Everfree, The Equestrian States

All was quiet on the bus. Osman Hakkı was sat at the back of the bus, quietly smoking. Subtly, Rauf Zafer Tangör went to the back of the bus.

"All right?" said Rauf.

"Yeah," muttered Osman.

"Listen," began the manager. "I know you're a young guy. I know we all make mistakes. I can even understand the smoking. However, I can't allow punching the team's physio."

"Can I defend myself?" asked Osman.

"No," said Rauf Zafer Tangör bluntly. "Osman, you're a talented 18 year old. However, no matter how talented you are, I cannot permit punching Dr. Balkır. I'm afraid I'm going to have to drop you from the team."

"No, no, no," groaned Osman. "You can't drop me."

"I can guarantee this news will get out somehow. People will call on me to drop you. If we nip it in the bud now and say that you're injured, we can avoid all this embarrassment."

"Please," pleaded Osman. "Playing at these tournaments for my country is all I've wanted to do since I was a kid. It's just I snapped, that's all. You know I'm not a violent person and you know I've been having personal difficulties, what with my mum's death and my girlfriend breaking up with me. Please don't make me go home. This is all I have at the moment."

Tangör paused for a moment and then sighed audibly.

"Fine," grumbled the manager. "You can stay. But I swear to Teshup, tüm tanrıların tanrısı, that I will send you back home as quick as a whistle if you slip up once more. One more chance. Okay?"

Osman's troubled countenance immediately relaxed.

"Thank you so much," smiled Osman, effusively pumping Tangör's hand. "I won't let you down I promise."

"I should hope not," replied Rauf, his eyes fixed on Osman's. Silently, he stood up and walked to the front of the bus. Osman smiled to himself, reclined in his seat and symbolically put his cigarette out.

The Empire of Mizuyuki
a tourist's guide to the land of the blessed snow

Introduction

The Empire of Mizuyuki is perhaps one of the more ... eccentric nations that currently exist in the boundless region of spacetime that we call our multiverse. While there aren't any stray deities roaming the streets at night, nor are there sentient jellied serpents swarming our candy shops, the land of the blessed snow is very much a deliciously unique entity. With a rich footballing history, both in terms of participation and hosting, the empire is well equipped to host a Baptism for the ages.

Situated in the region of Aeneas, the empire is in effect an amalgamation of twenty separate prefectures into a single unitary state, formally recognised as the Empire of Mizuyuki, the Empire of Suisetsu, or, in some cases, the Shirane Empire - after the reigning Imperial Family. The monarch of Mizuyuki, Shirane-no-Kirino - or to give her her formal title, Shirane-no-miya Kirino, Asuka I - is the reigning empress.

Mizuyuki has been an absolute monarchy for more than a millennium, and this practice extends to the present day; the empress, while not directly involved in the day-to-day administration of the empire, maintains absolute authority over her dominion. A select group of ten individuals elected by popular vote - collectively known as the Executive Committee - are tasked with exercising the empress' powers in her name, and they are effectively the leaders of the empire and the empress' advisors.

Mizuyuki is a nation of approximately 72 million people - and to use an appropriate analogy - the population is about as homogenous as a pancake - more than ninety-five percent of the population are Miraian, with a smattering of other minorities floating around the place. From a technological perspective, the empire remains a multiversal leader in research and development - with an annual research and development budget totaling in the trillions of aurorae, Mizuyuki is very much a researcher's dream.

In terms of total land area, Mizuyuki ranks amongst the larger nations in Aeneas, with a population density of more than 150 individuals per square kilometer. Fully four percent of the country's territory is composed of water, with such landmarks such as Lake Kagami (the lake of mirrors) and the Kiri River (the river of fog), both renowned for their exotic natural beauty, making up a majority.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the most cost-efficient way to travel to Mizuyuki?
As the Imperial Ministry of Tourism anticipates that most travelling fans will come from outside Aeneas, the recommended mode of transport is via plane. There are three major gateways into the nation via plane; the Kotori International Airport, situated in the northeastern reaches of the empire, the Koshigaya C-1 International Airport, located in the city of the same name, and the busiest gateway in all of Mizuyuki - the Yuiko Karano International Airport in the capital, Kirayuki.

  • How should I communicate with the locals?
English will do just fine; the Imperial Ministry of Education mandates that all curricula include English as a compulsory subject, and as such a majority of Mizuyuki-jin are fluent in the language. However, should you be well-versed in Miranian or Mandarin (or even both!), feel free to try your command of the language out with the locals! Chances are you'll be showered with praise; the locals appreciate the effort required to learn their language, and as a general rule of thumb will be more than happy to converse with you, so don't hesitate to find yourself a conversational partner!

  • How about food?
If you're looking for gastronomic delights, fear not, for Mizuyuki has much to offer a growling stomach. With an eclectic, diverse selection of local cuisine ranging from the plain to the exotic, the average tourist will be spoilt for choice as they explore the land of the blessed snow. Prices are usually a tad hefty and the portions smaller than average; but the sheer craftsmanship and quality of the ingredients more than make up for it!

  • Accommodation? Where are the best deals to be found?
Unless you want to make a four hour round trip to every single match in the Mizuyukian half, you'll have to make do with high prices for accommodation; of the three coastal cities selected to host Baptism of Fire matches, none of them are cheap, and if one wants to be close to the action, one must pay for the privilege. An average hotel room will generally set you back around USD 100; however, if you're lucky enough to be travelling with a large group of friends, you may be able to bag yourself a sweet deal at a travellers' lodge. It will still cost you upwards of USD 50, but it's at least cheaper than the alternative!

  • What is the dominant religion? Are there any religious conventions I should take note of?
The dominant religion within the empire is Kisekidō, which can best be described with the words 'spiritualistic' and 'harmony'. Literally the Path of Miracles in English, Kisekidō is the indigenous religion of Mizuyuki and the Miraian people, characterised by its prevalent animistic and polytheistic qualities. It is in essence an eclectic, diverse collection of decentralised, syncretic beliefs and practices which revolve around the central themes of spiritual and interplanar harmony, the ephemeral nature of the multiverses as well as the worship of kami, varyingly defined as deities, spirits and essences. It is also, to date, the only major religion to allude to the many-worlds interpretation. As for religious conventions, there are no items of any note that should unduly concern a visitor to the Miranian lands.

OOC: All dialogue is in Norwegian.

"If you could describe Velstaende in a sentence or two, your best bet would probably be: 'Wow. That's a lot of mountains.' And you would be right. There's definitely a lot of mountains here. And sports too. We can sport... I dunno if that makes sense, but whatever. I'm a big fan of sports. And we're going to look at a lot of sports in the coming weeks. Because I'm going to the Equestrian States! We're gonna follow the team around and watch their games. And I'm going to vlog this thing. It'll be like a little documentary. Catch you guys, later!"

"Woo! That sucked!" exclaimed Linus Olsen, the man with the camera. 720p had come to Velstaende.

Velstaende has long been a little behind the rest of the world when it came to commercial electronics. That happens when you spend all of your time in isolation. The nation of Velstaende had cloistered itself for many years, allowing the outside world to seep through only occasionally lest they fall too far behind. The country put its resources to other use. Mining. Mountain ranges upon mountain ranges smother the interior of the Velsh borders. All filled with riches. Iron, coal, you name it. Private companies try to out-innovate each other and tech firms try to out innovate them so they can sell them their innovations, spurring a never ending cycle of the most efficient mining processes on God's Green Earth. And of course all of these resources need to be moved somehow, resulting in the same thing occurring in the transportation sector, with companies moving people and resources as fast and as efficiently as possible.

This is what Linus saw now as he looked out the window of his apartment in Tvillinger. The city was situated between two major peaks and several lower ones. Since road travel is not feasible through a good portion of the country, there were instead gondolas like you would see at a ski resort. These were the buses and subways of Tvillinger. Snow came down softly as the metal behemoths slid along their cables. Further beyond, he could see the mountain elevators. As for those, they're what they sound like. Just large cars that take people up and down the mountains along a track. These take you to the rail stations. Rather than build winding tracks up, down, and all around, the elevators cut out a lot of the necessary materials.

Linus grabbed his pack and stowed his camera. It was to those elevators he was now headed. From there he would go to Manehattan, Equestrian States, by way of Nyhavn, the Velsh capital. And that was where the true fun began. For a long time, he had aspired to make films, but there just wasn't high enough quality equipment in Velstaende for that to become a reality. Now with the power of HD, he could combine his two greatest loves: soccer and film.
We have some mountains and stuff.

STAFF
Head Manager: Jason Grant
Jason Grant is pretty much a newcomer to managing sports. Before being elected to managing Maretta's national side, Grant was a businessman sponsoring numerous youth leagues in the nations' largest city.

Assistant Manager: Lucas Smith
Lucas Smith is a very quiet and reserved man. Don't let this fool you however, as his tactical experience and motivational messaging does most of his talking.

Assistant Manager: Kyle Simpson
Simpson was the former U-21 coach of Maretta, before being called up to the national squad due to his coaching abilities.

Fitness Coach: Douglas Pearson

Trainer: Thomas Turner

Goalkeeping Coach: Sam Bradley

Defending Coach: Matthew Thompson

Midfield Coach: Derrick Hughes

Attacking Coach: Franklin Garfield

TACTICS
Style Modification: +3
Formation: 5-3-2 or a 4-3-3
Game Tempo: Energetic
Defense: Combined/Zonal
Midfield: Down the Wings
Game Tempo: Hurry Up
Aggressiveness: Moderate when winning; high when losing

STARTING ELEVEN
#1) - Goalkeeper - Peter Elliot - 26 Years Old
Peter Elliot is one of the main surprises of this Marettan roster. He has raised many eyebrows around his country due to manager Jason Grant's decision to start a young player over a veteran with loads of experience in Vincent Monroe.

#5) - Left Back - Matt Sterling - 23 Years Old
Sterling is a tall and burly defense-man who is especially good for clearing corners as well as lofted crosses that come his way.

#3) - Center Back - Dylan Humphrey - 28 Years Old
Dylan Humphrey is a versatile player who can play in the heart of defense or upfront as a defensive midfielder. He can be foolish sometimes, so expect this player to be written in the referee's book often.

#8) - Sweeper - William Laurence - 25 Years Old
Laurence is a relatively quiet person who likes to let his style of play do the talking. He will be played in front of goal - providing an extra person to clear opportunities from the opposing side.

#4) - Center Back - Quinn Clay - 27 Years Old
Quinn Clay is the counter attack catalyst for Maretta. He leads the charge from an opponents chance to create one for his own team. Positioning is an eyesore from this player; and has been seen playing as far front as midfield when not told to do so.

#6) - Right Back - Clarence Cooper - 21 Years Old
While not much is known about this young player; manager Jason Grant has labeled Cooper as an energetic and skillful player on the ball who loves to use his speed to break any disturbance up.

#11) - Left Winger - Christian Wallace - 23 Years Old
Christian Wallace is surely the man on Maretta's national roster to watch. He is quick, energetic, and very skillful. Wallace also has a rocket of a shot - netting a 29 yard screamer in training camp this past week.

#7) - Center Midfielder - Marvin Mayes - 27 Years Old
The captain of Maretta is placed in the central midfield position. Many refer to him as an "all around player", who can be used as a defender or play an attacking role. This player also has strong motivational qualities and is the guy to cheer everyone up during difficult times.

#17) - Right Winger - Brandon Pierce - 24 Years Old
Brandon Pierce is a speedy right winger who has mesmerizing ball control abilities as well as set piece specialties. Pierce loves to get forward during a counter attack, but can be prone to injury.

#10) - Center Forward - Tyler Thomas - 21 Years Old
Thomas is Maretta's go to forward when down a goal or when in need of one. The young striker can play anywhere inside the penalty box and loves to use his head when given the chance. Unfortunately, he can also be a nuisance to the referees which shadows his talent and success.

#23) - Center Forward - Jaden Ross - 29 Years Old
Jaden Ross will play alongside fellow striker Tyler Thomas, giving Maretta a "deadly duo" upfront. Ross is truly a versatile player who also likes playing winger or attacking midfield. He is referred to as the free kick magician, and loves to take shots from distance.

RESERVES
#2) - Goalkeeper - Vincent Monroe - 32 Years Old

#15) - Left Back - Henry Quinton - 30 Years Old
#9) - Center Back - John Chester - 24 Years Old

#26) - Right Back - Justin Smith - 24 Years Old

#21) - Left Winger - Jeffrey Jackson - 33 Years Old
#25) - Center Midfielder - Marcus Greene - 22 Years Old
#27) - Center Midfielder - Zachary Kelley - 28 Years Old
#24) - Right Winger - Benjamin Clarke - 23 Years Old

#13) - Center Forward - Christopher Clemens - 19 Years Old

Academica: A History
Anders Hornqvist, Ph.D | Videnhagen University Press

Foreword

Every nation has a story of how it came to be. Some are magnificent kingdoms that hardily withstood the trials and tribulations of time. Others are romantic stories of democracy, featuring the rebellion from an oppressive force. All countries have a beginning, and it appears that all nations will ultimately, one day, fail.

The story of Vermark fits no such mold. Vermark has no charismatic monarch or idyllic past of standing against tyranny. Rather, Vermark's story is a paradox. Moreover, Vermark's story is atypical and does not follow the typical pattern of state building. In fact, some called the rise of Vermark to be ironic. Vermark rose from a city. This city was, at its core, an university. This is why it was called the city-university, a term derived from substituting the word university for the word state in the phrase "city-state". This civilization was committed to learning; It was called Videnhagen, or the "Port of Knowledge". Today, Videnhagen is a cosmopolitan metropolis that is among the most advanced cities in the world.

The advancement of this story from this point is quite interesting. Vermark defied what is logical and ordinary. Vermark defied ordinary models of development. Most countries begin as Agrarian, rudimentary societies that become more advanced as their economic grows. Not Vermark. Vermark seems to have skipped all the normal stages of development and went straight to being an advanced economy, though, not necessarily a very large one. That's what is ironic. A nation dedicated to rationality and reason followed an seemingly irrational path.

However, when one wants to understand the history of a certain civilization, he or she should always look to the roots of that society. Vermark's roots follow the ideals of liberalism and scholasticism. The pursuit of knowledge has been the most valiant endeavor since the beginning of history. And this traces back to the so-called "Golden Age" of Vermark. Learning and studying were tasks taken up by men and women, old and young. Everyone came to Videnhagen to learn and study. The culture this created withstands to this day. The culture of Vermark continues to embrace curiosity, openness, and pluralism.

There are multiple routes that one can take in order to understand the society of the city-university. The best of which is to take a look at the people at the forefront of this society. These people were innovators, revolutionaries, and leaders. However, above all else, they were a team. They were a team in both the figurative sense and the literal sense. They worked together to make Videnhagen one of the most advanced and interesting societies in the multiverse.

These visionaries were also a team in the literal sense. They banded together and became a group known as the Academica Football Club. Academica, of course, is an organization that persists to this day. Moreover, what makes it interesting is how it got started. It began in 1774 as the football squad of the faculty. However, it became a symbol for the interconnection of various fields of study. It was a motif for how the individual accomplishments of many glorified the greater whole.

There have been many attempts to reembody this squad of sorts. Some have been parody, pointing out that smart people are typically not very athletic. However, it is my intention to go further than humor. I want to explain who these scholars are and what they have achieved. It is my mission to personify these components of the past because they will be the influences of the future.

Jack Eline, aged 17, wrote letters on his desk. One of these letters was to famed football fan, Ferdinand van Tango. He wrote to van Tango, asking why Varmelle never participated in international football competitions despite the support for the beautiful game. van Tango thought the same. One day, he was granted a meeting with Supreme Leader Lindsey Wells. While Wells was usually sober, van Tango had the "honour" of seeing an intoxicated one. And rumour has it that she is much easier to convince while under the influence. And so van Tango managed to convince her, and two years after the formation of the Board for Varmellese Football, the Outsiders now début on the international stage. Despite Wells being extremely intoxicated to the point where she was "...so drunk I don't mind if you kill me," she begrudgingly gives her support. What might be is now what might have been, and the Outsiders seek to achieve what might be.

Hyuga, Mizuyuki, 1400 local time
Weather: Mild and Warm, 20 degrees celsius

"Goddamn it, this is a very hard group to face, with Thibaut, Waterandearthistan, Walamzia, Palmeria and Aloquirbe." said Hermenegild, new to the international football as everyone in there but him, was also new to the national team level football, he couldn't handle strong opponents like Thibaut or Walamzia, those 2 are the favourites to advance the group, sais a Bosnakrajinan site. He was quickly replied by Iunius, the veteran of the young squad who said "Hermenegild, Bosnakrajinans haven't faced world football either and don' trust that kind of sites, those people have nothing to do with Estenians, actually they are very far away from them, they are hear, in Europe, in fears of another war in Former Yugoslavia. Estenians are protecting them and they haven't learnt them football, they don't know what they say, they can't even send a squad in the Europa league, like we do with Dasburg im Hausbau." then touched the shoulder of Hermenegild, who then replied "That's correct, they cannot do that. They have very weak teams. It's our time take the Baptism of Fire from them and return it home, this chance comes only once in a life time. We must deal it with swiftness." Iunius then nodded and said "Exactly, but in order to take that championship back home, we must train harder than we did in the league last year, so we can defeat our opponents easily. This is going to be a long summer, a very long one with the Baptism of Fire being the spotlight of the events around the globe. The cameras will only be at you and only you, it's your turn to prove that you are a talented player and gain fame all around the world. And it's our turn to show that Renatiem plays high-class football since the old days." Hermenegild then replied "We must rush to make it, we may feel dizzy, we may vomit out of nervousness but I think we will make it and we will make it, big time." Iunius then replied "Yes, we will. We will face all that, we will face nervousness but I think that some day is really close, very close and we must enjoy it." then said "See you at the hotel, Hermenegild." and he replied "See you there, captain."

At a beach in Hyuga, 1500 local time
Weather: Mild and Warm 24 degrees celsius

"CANONBALL!" shouted Herbert while he jumped from a cliff at the beach, which were cold enough to cool you up in the hot summer sun of Mizuyuki, was quickly respnsed by Konrad, who was afraid to death when he saw Herbrt falling 20 centimeters away from him "Dude! Be careful, we could almost die there and we both know we don't want to die young." then Herbert's response was "Sorry, but the beach was looking som amazing from up there, that I had to jump." "But, be careful next time, you don't want to end sitting for the rest of your life." responded Konrad who has replied by Herbert "I'll try be more careful next time, we'll be lucky to have some artistic dives." then swam to the coast which was 30 meters away. When he got out, it was Jin Tanaka who was there and Herbert said "You must be our Liaison Officer, aren't you?" Jin's response was quick and swift "Yes, my name is Jin Tanaka and welcome to Mizuyuki, I'll be following you on every spot you go at every match and I'll guide you to the areas you don't know, only if you ask me. You must be Michel Herbert from the Renatian squad, glad to meet a high class player like you." then they shook hands and Herbert replied "Yes, it's me. Shall we go to the hotel yet?" Tanaka's response was quick "Not yet, your lunch will be served in half an hour from now and you training session will start 4 hours after the lunch, as planned. Dinner will immediatly be served afterthe training session is over and you have cleaned yourselves up, as in the schedule over here." then he handed the schedule to Herbert and Tanaka continued "At 8:00 in the morning you will wake up and 8:15 you will eat breakfast. At 8:50 you will brush your teeth and 9:20 your first training session will begin and until 11:20 you will be there. 11:20 with 15:00 you are free to do whatever you want, at 15:30 you will eat your lunch, at 16:00 you will rest or sleep and at 19:30 you will have your 2nd training session until 21:45, at 22:00 you will bath and at 22:10 you will eat dinner, after dinner at around 22:30 you will sleep. Am I understood?" Herbert's response was "Yeah, that's a very nice daily schedule but I think we'll be ready for those session and we'll eb healthy, thanks very much, mister Tanaka." Tanaka's response was "You're welcome, mister Herbert, now if you'll excuse me, I have to go take some rest." Herbert's response was "Take your time."

Clough: Where's Our Liaison?

Brian Clough once again spoke out against everyone by claiming that Equestrain States' policy of not giving them a liaison was "very unfair. Where's our liaison? Our players have never been here before, so I don't know why we weren't given one. This is a little unfair to our team; how are they going to adjust to the change in climate and to the unique surroundings of our area if we don't have aliaison?"

On the question of whether he feels the players will be ready for the Baptism of Fire, Clough answered with an emphatic yes, that they will be ready for whatever the tournament throws their way.

PRIDNESTROVIA DEMOLISHED BY ABANHFLEFT 5-0 IN FINAL PRE-TOURNAMENT FRIENDLY

By Gustav Tyumenov

Image
Pridnestrovian and Fleftic players fight to gain the ball during a corner kick. Abanhfleft easily defeated the Pridnestrovians 5-0 in the latter's final pre-Baptism of Fire friendly in May 26 Stadium, Riuwiee, Abanhfleft.

RIUWIEE, ABANHFLEFT - The Abanhfleft national football team, fully demonstrating its experience in international football, handed Pridnestrovia a resounding 5-0 defeat that left most, if not all, of the national team players wishing that they had not arranged the friendly in the first place.

Three goals from three different Fleftics made sure that the game was over before the first half had even ended, and Gustavo Potter's brace in the second half only rubbed salt into the wounds of the Pridnestrovians.

Abdullah Musa converted a chance from just outside the penalty box to give Abanhfleft a lead that it would never give up for the rest of the game.

Walter White followed up a few minutes later with a goal from admittedly brilliant passing play from the Fleftics, doubling their lead over the Pridnestrovians.

Randy Floyd twisted the dagger deeper into the Pridnestrovians' gut by scoring a penalty after he was brought down inside the box by Isidor Petrov.

Gustavo Potter, the eventual man of the match, scored a free kick from 35 yards, and then he made a header courtesy of a Peter Rice corner kick.

"This is not the result that we were expecting," manager Werner Ceausescu said in the post-game press conference. "We had a lot of momentum coming into this match, but the Fleftics didn't give. In fact, we were the ones that collapsed when we faced them. That is something that we must make sure not to do the same once we finally step into the Baptism of Fire itself."

Pridnestrovia's first game in the Baptism of Fire will be against Aynard. This match will be held in the Mirania Infinita Stadium in Kagura, Mizuyuki. It will be broadcast live by the PCNA television channel at four in the afternoon.

MARETTA POST

MARETTA GEARS UP FOR BAPTISM OF FIRE

by Stanley Grace

KAGURA, Mizuyuki - The Baptism of Fire's 58th Edition is finally upon us. In the previous tournament, we saw the nation of Isula take home the grand prize by defeating Polaskaan. How the winners managed to go almost the whole competition without conceding a goal, we don't know. This years' "BoF" will be hosted in the Equestrian States and Mizuyuki; two very prestigious sporting nations known throughout Nation States for their big success.

Maretta has been drawn in Group D with The Sword Bloke, Pridnestrovia, Aynard, Fratton, and Nurkama. Many analysts predict The Sword Bloke to run away with the group and go deep into the tournament. A large percentage of them also expect Pridnestrovia as group favorites; after displaying some impressive football in several pre-season matches. There is no doubt the Marettans have been placed into a difficult group and will have to play their hearts out if there is any hope of progressing in the tournament.

Maretta's national team will come into the tournament after playing in three pre-tournament fixtures - a 0-2 loss at home to San Jose Guayabal, a 2-2 draw at home against Eastfield Lodge, and a 1-0 loss to Star United States. The first game against SJG was a competitive and aggressive game played by the Marettans; unfortunately a penalty conceded by Humphrey's in the 80th minute blew the game and SJG pulled ahead. The second result with Eastfield Lodge was undoubtedly Maretta's best performance in the pre-season - they dominated possession, and even pulled ahead against a well experienced Eastfield side. This experience proved vital as Lodge were able to climb down 2 to tie the game in stoppage time. Lastly was the game played against S.U.S. This was another tense game, and it came down to the wire - S.U.S. however won the game on a free kick 75 minutes in.

Today's match up features an unknown Nurkama side and Maretta in the Kagura Arashi Stadium. Maretta plans on using it's 5-3-2 formation and playing it's younger players in an effort to give the lands some experience and playing time. It is expected for stud strikers in Jaden Ross, and Tyler Thomas to start in this one, amidst some rumors circulating on bad the chemistry is between the two. Peter Elliot is also expected to play in tonights fixture, as manager Jason Grant spoke with the media, telling them that keeper Vincent Monroe had a slight thigh injury and would be questionable.

The Maretta Post was able to interview Jason Grant earlier today on his predictions for tonight's fixture.

"I think we can be victorious if we play with our heads and not with our feet. What I mean by this is if we are playing like a team and not individually, we can be successful. I also told the guys to not make stupid decisions, like arguing with the ref or tackling opposing players intentionally. These actions can be costly now and in the future; we surely don't want that!"

(The SFA have decided to hire Tristan Kuyter of Nephara to be the new defensive coach of Szavoda)

The SzaTec Building, Kreceva

The SzaTec building was the latest in a string of rash-built, massively over-budget skyscrapers built by an up-and-coming Szavda firm in Kreceva's downtown district. It was 113 stories, and was ugly as hell. Apparently twisting steel beams were in this year. And orange glass. In order to cover in the inordinate costs of construction, SzaTec let out the bottom 20 floors to other businesses, and also let office space, which one could rent for a day.

After sending out e-mails into the magical internet ether, mainly to Football Associations, they'd received a number of responses for the role of defensive coach for the Szavda team. They'd looked through the various applications and had gone for Nepharan Tristan Kuyter, and had scheduled a meeting with him in Kreceva to go over the details. It was bad news for him, because he had to get on some god-awful flight at some god-awful time to fly to Eura and then hop-over to Szavoda.

It was just past noon and the sky was it's usual shade of dark grey. It had recently rained, and puddles littered the streets. Moli and Dazdan, already staying in the city as they were preparing to leave for the Baptism of Fire, arrived at the tower block and checked in at the ridiculously oversized and overstaffed lobby - at least 10 staff to deal with 2 people. A typically sweet yet stupid young woman occupied the main desk.

"We've booked out Conference Centre C for the half-day." Moli said, sliding the requisite piece of paper across the marble top. The girl smiled warmly and tapped some keys on her computer at an excruciatingly slow pace. Moli gritted her teeth, she seemed to have a real distaste for airheaded secretaries. She looked like she was going to punch her when she handed over two security passes, but instead she nodded and added her thanks. She handed one of the lanyards to Dazdan and they passed through the double doors to the Conference Centre.

The centre was exactly that, a whole centre. There were three rooms, including a massive meeting room, with a table that must have had at least 50 seats round it. Moli took a seat at the far end, closest the wall, so she could plug in her laptop, whilst Dazdan strolled idly around the room looking at the various features the room had to offer. Most notably, there was a huge flat-screen television on the wall behind Moli. Cut into the wall were two shelves, and several remotes. Dazdan took one and pressed the on button, and the TV flicked into life.

"This things got digital TV apparently" Moli said, recalling the information brochure. Dazdan nodded impressively and started flicking through channels. He eventually fell onto the main sports channel, where they were showing a repeat of last nights big rugby match, the Kreceva Derby between Ljuban RK and Martanjzak RK. He set down the remote and kept half an eye on the game as he continued his odyssey round the room. He came next to the kitchenette area, where there was a small fridge. He expected it to be empty, but opened the door anyway, and was greeted by a great sight. He smiled and turned his head "They must have thought there was a big conference going on here, there's plenty of food stored." He reached in and took something out. A six-pack of beer. "And Beer!"

"Fantastic." Moli replied "Hook us up with one." Dazdan obliged and ripped a can away from it's holdings, tossing it across the room to Moli, who took it one handed. Dazdan opened his can and took a drink, before returning to the top of the table where Moli was sat. He pulled a chair out and sat down, placing his feet on the table.

"I can think of worse places to hold a meeting" Dazdan noted through a sip of beer.
"That's for sure. Superfast broadband doesn't come around all too often round here."
"I fancy some crisps."

They sat and waited for a further 30 minutes, watching the rugby and generally having a better time than one should do in a Conference Centre. The talked a lot, mostly about Dazdan and his past, as whenever he tried to steer the conversation onto her, she fired it right back. Eventually, Dazdan decided it wasn't worth the effort to try and unlock her past, so he just steered clear of it.

They were having such a good time in fact, that they missed the arrival of their guest. He was a tall man, about 6ft 2", with dark hair and designer stubble. He wore a dark suit and carried a folder under his arm. He knocked on the open door of the meeting room, looking down to the other end where the two people he was supposed to be meeting where sat facing away from him, laughing, drinking beer and watching rugby. Was this right? He thought, checking the e-mail on his phone again. I expected something a bit more, well, proper. He knocked again and stepped hesitantly in. Still no response. He coughed in an attempt to get their attention, but still nothing.

"Hello." He said sternly.

Dazdan turned on his chair, a moment passing before realising who it was.

"Shit, I mean, sorry, hello" He stammered as he stood up. He offered a hand. "Dazdan Iubirdic, SFA." He indicated to where Moli was sitting, and she raised a hand. "That's my colleague, Ms. Dolanvoic". The man smiled and nodded. "I'm Tristan Kuyter, I'm really glad you've given me the chance to discuss a contract."

Moli laughed and stood up. "You've clearly never been to Szavoda before have you?"
"Err, no ma'am, it's my first time."
"Yeah, Szavoda isn't really contract country. Let's sit down. Beer?"
"No, thanks."
"Come on."

Moli didn't wait for an answer and passed him a can from the table. She could sense he was slightly apprehensive, so she removed her hair band and allowed her blonde hair to fall onto her shoulders. There was something almost ethereal about it, and Tristan's eyes widened slightly.

"You follow rugby?" Dazdan asked as they had sat down, trying to formulate his best English.
"Vaguely" The Nepharan responded. Dazdan showed he didn't understand "A little bit." He clarified, making a motion with his hands. Dazdan nodded in recognition.

"This is one of the country's biggest derbies, Ljuban RK and Martanjzak RK have been rivals for a 100 years now. These matches normally have very little scoring and a lot of fighting." Moli added, in her near-perfect English. Dazdan had heard her speak on the phone a few times in English, but he was still impressed, she was practically accentless; she could easily pass as a native for any anglophone country.

"So" Tristan said, steering the conversation towards business "About a deal."
"OK, what are you paid now? Or, what were you paid at your previous job?"
"I don't think I'm going to disclose that at the moment."
"We'll pay you quadruple. Plus accommodation and living expenses."

Kuyter was quiet for a moment, before leaning in closer and planting his finger on the desk. "Isn't it me who is supposed to start with the massively unrealistic demands?"
"Maybe. But we'll do it."
"Can I have some kind of proof of that?"
"Err, how can I prove that. Daz, have you got the briefcase?"

Dazdan got up and walked calmly to the corner of the room where that briefcase was sitting on a desk. He returned and dropped the case on the desk; he knew the drill by now. He opened it's lid and sat back down again. Moli put her hand in and drew out a single purple D100 note.

"There's D176,000 in there, and a hell of a lot more elsewhere. I can assure you, this is no bluff."
"OK. Talk to me about living expenses and accommodation."
"Well, there's no shortage of upscale flats in any city in the country. We're based over in Vfana, but that's a shithole, so you can live anywhere really. We'll cover the purchase or the rent, plus furnishings. In living expenses, we can give you say, D1000 a month. Plus obvious travel expenses et cetera."
"A shithole? This place is pretty nice."
"The government keeps Kreceva as a pretty picture, to fool business types. It's like the one good child you have to flaunt to everyone when your others are shooting up behind a bus shelter. So, a deal? I don't mean to pressurise, but we need a decision quickly, as I'm sure you're aware the Baptism of Fire is starting up soon enough."

Kuyter leant backward in his chair. "I'd have to consider my other options..."
"Yes or no?"
"Yes."
"Great."

Versålölm, Vjaalsbürg - One Year Prior

Air Hakifao Flight 5723 touched down at half past eleven, delivering the national team of Hakifao to their next destination. They'd been playing in the Empire Reunion Cup for quite a while now, the winner earning a chance to qualify for the World Cup. Most years the Starlings had been a pushover team for much of their existence - a second-round appearance was considered a brilliant performance.

Of course, things had changed recently. Somehow the team had managed to pull themselves out of the dregs of international football, and two Round-of-sixteen appearances in the AOCAF testified to their newfound ability to play somewhat well. It'd be a while until they won anything, but at least things were looking up.

Nothing showed this more, though, than what they were doing at the ERC. Formerly paperweights against teams like Vjaalsbürg and the inexplicably alive good team from Hicaña, they'd managed to make it to the finals last year - losing by the chance to make it to the next level by two goals. But this year would be different.

An injury-hobbled Hicañan team had made it to the semifinals, but lost to the Vjaals. Meanwhile, the Starlings were given an unexpected gift, drawn against the surprise team from Eirelia, who they defeated easily to advance to the finals.

Now, they were here - landed in Versålölm to face the Vjaals in the first match of the ERC finals. The Hakifaos slept or stared into the distance, wondering what the future would bring...

Two Days Later

Emmanuel Orselssen had always admired the 4-4-2. It had been the foundation of northern tactics for years, always holding out against flurries of radical ideas. The North was a traditional place tactically, favoring the formation over the more southern 3-2-3-2 and Llamanean Diamonds formations that had spread through Llamanea like wildfire.

So he'd taken one out to play Vjaalsbürg. For Orselssen, it was a typical formation - Andersson in the net, Haugen/Isoaho/Henrikson/Jonsson in the back, Borg/Mäkela/Korhonen forming a competent midfield, Pederssen the attacking midfielder, and Niemi/Andreasson in the front. It leaned towards 4-3-1-2, but in general it was a fairly bland lineup.

Of course, so far it had worked.

"The Hakifaos look like a million bucks, doesn't them? They just looks like someone you want to stick in your... Esportiva."
"I'm glad you finished that sentence the way you did. "
"They'd murder me in the sack. "

The Kitsunes performing light drills earlier today
Manehattan, Equestrian States- With the first matches of the Baptism of Fire Tournament set to kick off tonight, Flardania looked to keep there muscles loose with some light drills. The kitsunes who elected to arrive in Manehattan a day earlier had the option of relaxing with an off day before Manager Kyosuke signature pre-dawn drills. Coach Kyosuke and Assistant Coach Renée Lévesque took the time to answer some of my questions during breakfast.

Q: Kyosuke-san, what does Flardania need to do in order to be successful in this tournament?
A: "Adapt and survive, the great thing about Baptism of Fire is that we will face only unranked opponets, however we aren't ranked as well. The key is adapting quickly on the pitch and survive as long as possible. The further we go the better ranked we will be and the more high stakes experience we will have. This will be important in the long run as we seek to increase prestige and success."

Q: Kyosuke-san, what was the thought process in deciding to travel to Manehattan a day early?
A: "For what we are doing now, rather than sit home one more day with no friendly scheduled. The Staff and I decided to come to Manehattan to get used to the environment and pitch and then take our time with our scheduled light easy day in Manehattan than flying to Manehattan."

Q: You spoke of environment, what is the teams reaction to the people of this nation and atmosphere heading into the first matches?
A: "Well we wave, we are polite, treat them with respect like the Goddess mandates of us but other than that there is nothing to it. We came here to play football not relax in vacation. However one thing I have taken in appreciation is some of the local who are wearing jerseys of the Kitsunes and the Flardanians who are walking the city prepared to support us. No matter where we go this team can expect a large showing from The Otaku Football Army, and with there love and support we always seek to do our fans proud win, draw, or lose. "

Q: Lévesque-san, what would you say led to you being among the few if not only female head or assistant coach in this tournament?
A: "Oh I get questions too, Merci [bows & table occupants laugh] I would say Joseph Yabuta he was a little known player who was never given a shot going into middle part of his rookie season. The Kairaku Nymphs as you know was last in the Konami-F League and as a way of tanking so we can guarantee the first Draft pick. The Nymphs hired a woman. I don't know if it was the league was caught off by my coaching style, my given Yabuta breakout debut being because he wants to impress me [winks at Yabuta, Yabuta blushes looking away while team and staff laugh], impress my friend Myeong Yi who I hired as team doctor and is the doctor of the national team. [Yabuta blushes harder, team laughs harder] or maybe impress both of us...[room silent Joseph Yabuta Caribbean-dark skinned face is red as blood blushing as he excuses himself to bathroom, room even more silent than burst laughing even louder] Oh my seems I went a little too far there. Point is it seems the nation feels i'm the best bet to accompany Kyosuke as a lethal coaching weapon and best at maximizing Yabuta's potential."

Q: You seem to have good team chemistry, why is that?
A: "Well this team is the best of Flardania and we made sure to not just have star power but players that can like or at least respect each other. Also this is the same team from NS World Fair III: Christmas Truce with the exception of Ichikawa-kun. He is a good and competitive sport that was able to gel. When we are not working on perfecting our craft, we like spending time in each others company. This is true unity."

As heard from the answers the Kitsunes are trying to remain focus and relaxed going into their matchup with Velstaende. Velstaende seems to have some tight defense and it will be up to the Kitsunes to score fight as they attempt to not fall behind in the standings early. Currently 900 members of the Otaku Football Army fan zone are in Manehattan to attend the Kitsunes games. This is not including any fan who may have arrived after the writing of this article. The National team would like to thank Air Pacifica for making it easier for fans to come show their support. We at FBC would like to remind those at home, that games can be seen in Japanese or French on Nagatomo Sport Network (NSN) and Saito Broadcast Channel (SBC) also tonight opening game can be seen on our second channel (FBC 2) for those who wish to watch an english broadcast. Please refer to local networks for other language options.

The Thibauti Prophet

Over 10,000 non-Thibautism prayer huts burned down
Image
Many joined the festivities of burning huts

To celebrate the opening day of the BoF, most loyal Thibautis went out and burned down their local Athiest, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, or whatever the hell it is prayer huts to celebrate the Thibauti National team's first ever soccer match.

"Whenever there's a huge event, such as our leader's birthday or something like that, we burn prayer huts of fake religious faiths to celebrate and praise God," spoke a local who is a fervent follower of Thibautism in a small village where there were many non-Thibautism followers, "It's a very liberating and fun thing to do. "Sadly no one was inside when we burned them down, but at least they can go to our huts and pray to our one true God."

On the other hand, a woman who was openly atheist agreed to speak to us. Keep in mind we do not endorse this sect of devil-worship in any way, shape, or form.

"This is oppression. Why can't I choose what I worship, even if its nothing. Thibautism is just a stupid cult.
