Herlek Korhonen couldn't sleep the night before their second match. It was against Szavoda - not a highly regarded team, but one that had looked extremely dangerous in their opening match. He somehow couldn't focus on anything - not because of the illness, not because of Szavoda, just because.

Next to him, Emmanuel Orselssen tossed and turned. He gave the impression of being asleep, but something about the manager seemed to imply he was awake. Herlek turned over to face him. Sure enough, Orselssen's eyes opened uneasily.

"Still awake?" he whispered to the manager.

"Yes," Emmanuel said.

"Nervous about Szavoda?"

"Not too much. They looked impressive but I think we can handle them. The key'll be shutting down Branimir Milic - he's the only decent player on that squad. I don't know where their performance came from, really - they shouldn't be that good."

"They are, though. We might need to do more than just manhandle Milic. Last week they looked like they were in the World Cup, not the Szavodan B-league-"

"Szavoda doesn't have a B-League. I mean, unless you count their A-League."

"Ha. That's what they said about Brenecia, and nobody's laughing at them now, are they?"

"Oh, you'd be surprised, Herlek." Emmanuel's voice drifted off, and Herlek thought at first he was asleep. He glanced around the room. Moon-cast shadows flitted across the beds. An owl hooted in the distance. Herlek rolled back over and tried not to mull over Szavoda too much. He didn't think it would help, although scouting had revealed they were in fact somewhat-normal people and not cats.

"Herlek?" the manager's voice was unusually furtive.

"Yes?"

"How-how long are you going to make it?"

"Oh, I don't know. I've still got a bit left in me, and I'm going to turn that bit into a supernova when I leave. I'm going to go out as hard as possible." He sounded nearly brave enough to fool himself. "Maybe I'll die tomorrow. Maybe we'll both die tomorrow. But I'm sure as **** not going to let that stop me."

"Shouldn't be difficult, considering who you are."

"Right. Anyways, few months or something," Herlek said, then hurriedly: "Let's talk Szavoda. They aren't bad, aren't they?"

"No, no. We'll be fine," Emmanuel said. Herlek sighed and turned around, throwing the covers over his head. He thought he heard someone crying, but it might have just been the bed.
