Monnier receives surprise call for Patistan opener

Northern Territories fast bowler Ben Monnier will receive a surprise call-up to the Wray test side, according to a source within the Wray set-up.

The 19-year old will technically replace Jonathan Perry, who was the incumbent following the Cheltish test seris, but it is widely believed that he has taken the spot of left-armer seamer Christian Dawson-Lane, who was dropped for a combination of poor form and needing a second spinner after the 2nd Test in Chelta.

The young right armer has been catching eyes in the domestic game, taking startling figures such as 7-92 and 6-42 in Division 1 games last season, on his way to coming third on the wicket-takers list with 41 scalps. The fast bowler was promoted from the development side after a long-term injury to first-choice seamer Alex Douglas, and was in good form in his opening match on a green deck against Central Districts, bagging four wickets and gunning the speed clock: some measurements had him coming in at 94mph, although most estimates bring this down to around 90mph, which is still a rapid pace for such a young bowler.

Otherwise, the line-up remains the same for the opening Test of the summer, which will see Jamie Jackson looking to bring his imperious overseas form back into Wray. TV coverage starts on WNTV1 at 10:30am, whilst radio coverage is on Cartersburg City Radio (103.4fm) and Radio 7, starting at 10:40.

Jamie Jackson enjoyed a prolific debut series, showing signs of things to come

Crack. The ball scurries away through the verdant extra-cover region. Four more runs onto Jackson's already intimidating innings.

It's the 2nd Innings in the 1st Test Match at Newport, the sun is shimmering and Jamie Jackson is enjoying life. Having been called up to the national side, he impressed in his opening innings, marshalling the tail to prevent Wray from falling to a significantly underpar total. His 55 not out was the stand-out knock in an otherwise dour innings from the Green Caps. He is watchful against the seamers, and uses his feet well against Tim May, lodging a half-century during his first appearance on the international stage. After the close of play that day, instead of heading back to the changing room, he follows batting coach Brandon Jones down to the nets and hits a 100 balls from the bowling machine. His avarice for runs and for stroke-making is perhaps only matched by the great Simon Sterne.

He comes back out for the second innings, and picks up his second half century, even better than the previous knock. He showed remarkable calm against a particularly hostile spell from Stuart Werren and Harry Donoghue, weaving out of the way of bouncers and remaining vigilant outside his off-stump, which was repeatedly probed by the Cheltan seamers. Two things that bowlers try to do with new batsmen is bowl down the 'corridor of uncertainty', outside the off-stump, and also the short ball. In one over against Werren, he was peppered with short balls, and Jackson calmly rocked back and smacked him first behind square for 4 runs and then over deep-midwicket for another boundary. The confidence he displayed was very impressive for 24-year old, especially on Test debut, but for those who had seen him in the green-kit of Wray's limited overs team, this was nothing new.

His exploits in the Quadrangular Series in Liventia, his first series, as a young 20-year old, he started with a measured 67, remarkably similar to the innings he played at Newport, holding up one end valiantly whilst wickets tumbled at the other. He also chipped in well with his loopy leg-breaks, although we're yet to see that at the test level. He made another 50 against Chelta, but his best innings came against Liventia; after the hosts had posted an intimidating 335 to win, he came in with the side on 65-4, and played a rapid and confident innings. He registered 106 off just 63 balls, never looking in doubt, and scoring 14 fours. It was a sumptuous knock that caught the attention of then-coach Tom Werren, who first brought him into the Test set-up. "It was by chance that I was the Park Central Oval, I had missed my connecting flight, and the next one wasn't until the following day, so I stopped in on the PCO to see us play. I saw Jamie play and instantly thought 'this guy has got serious talent''.

He filled in at the top of the order for a while, but it highlighted some struggles against the seaming ball and he soon returned lower down the order, where he could play a more natural game against spin and the non-seaming ball. He flourished once there, bagging two ODI tons. In the GardenBank Tri-Series, he played the anchor role with 54 as Jason Keillher went bezerk against Gruenberg's bowlers with his 149* off 112 balls. He then took two wickets in that game with a surprisingly effective spell of leg-spin, including having opener Diesler caught at cover. He then registered a century in the 2nd final, scoring 114 in Wray's 302.

It was following that innings (his most recent in ODI cricket, after a hamstring injury put him out for the last Final), that he was called up for the Selection Pool for GCF 5, and was included in the squad for the Tour of Liventia, on the insistence of Werren. He never did turn out for the national side, but the experienced held him in good stead for his debut at the beginning of the following season after Ashton Macallister lost his place in side, with the regime seeking a shift in the balance in the side.

He immediately paid off the faith had in him by the selectors, grabbing a pair of 50s on debut in an astute performance. A slight blip occurred at Derwent, with two low scores, apparently undone by the zippy legspin of May. But he bounced back in the third test at Chelsea, scoring his maiden test century as Wray racked up 522/4d, making 103 in a double-century stand with Glenn Mitchell. He also showed his fielding prowess with a superb catch at mid-on, throwing himself across the turf to pluck a hard drive Ernie Sullivan from the bowling of Blake Matthews. He was a rock in that position, as well as backward point, always willing to hit the turf to stop runs. He went one better in the 4th and final Test, scoring his second century with 151, leading Wray 469/9d in a dominating display.

He returned home with a series average of 63, with 2 fifties and 2 centuries, and said that his aim was to keep his form going into the domestic summer.

"I'm just really excited about being selected and being able to show what I'm capable. I played well in Chelta but it would mean a lot to me if I were to be able to perform in front of the home crowds. I'd like to make my place permanent, and to do that I have to keep my form going well into the summer: a couple of centuries against Gruenberg would do that.

Cheltish bowlers feast in Gloriax

Chelta’s three-match tour of Gloriax has started positively with Chelta’s 9-wicket win in the First Test at Millennium Park, Titania.

Chelta’s decisive victory can be in large part attributed to a stunning performance put in by Chelta’s pace bowling battery, who prospered in otherwise untested conditions for this Cheltish team.

The Millennium pitch sported a healthy grass cover, making for conditions conducible to pace and bounce, and leaving Chelta’s pace trio, Werren, Donoghue and Trott, licking their lips.

Chelta bowled Gloriax all out for 286 in the latter’s first innings, with Werren taking four wickets while Donoghue took three, Trott two and Madison one.

Werren’s four-for involved claiming Gloriax wickets one, two and three in quick succession, including a ball that has received widespread replay on YouTube, which was bowled seemingly safely well outside off stump only to jag aggressively back in to take down a hapless Kendrick Ybanez’s middle stump.

He never saw it coming, and, sure enough, looked it as he walked away, incredulous.

Rodrick Heister and Gregorio Blane restored some sanity to Gloriax’s innings after their initial collapse, putting on a stabilising partnership together to bring Gloriax out of the danger zone.

However, with the second new ball, the Cheltish bowlers turned the game decisively back in Chelta’s favour.

A particularly belligerent spell of Harry Donoghue’s claimed 3 quick wickets, disposing of the last of the middle order and the beginning of the tail.

Cleaning up the remainder of the tail proved fast work for Stuart Werren and James Trott.

It was in Gloriax’s second innings, however, that the Cheltish bowlers really put in an eminent performance.

Chelta bowled Gloriax all out for a mere 136, six of the wickets being claimed by Harry Donoghue.

Harry Donoghue’s six-for was aggressive and at express pace.

He made liberal use of the short ball, peppering the Gloriax seamers with hostile balls aimed at the body, intended to intimidate, a testament to this being that two of Donoghue’s six wickets came from short balls.

These aggressive tactics seemed to work, as Donoghue single-handedly induced a batting collapse and, with help from Werren and Trott again, saw Gloriax bowled out in their second innings for 136.

The Cheltish bowlers’ stellar performances made life easy for Chelta’s batsmen, who needed only 64 runs to win the game in the final innings.

They managed it in less than 24 overs with 9 wickets to spare.

Harry Donoghue was, unsurprisingly, named man of the match for his 6-wicket haul and 9 wickets in the match.

    Cock again almost overwhelms Gruenberg

Gruenberg won a rare overseas Test series victory, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead with a 9 wicket win at the Vogler City Cricket Ground. Azzawozzawoowizzbitz Telliflikkiflarknon took 8-87 and 63 from 74, and needing just 72 to win Yeepers Naroadnig was on hand to guide his team to his first series as captain. Most encouraging were the performances of the new faces in the team, with half-centuries for Ruttup Izaizakanorb and Kahunk Uvaevaluvae, though Kakuwat Gezzalqin was dismissed for a duck on his return and Lemonzesty Yowoax once again struggled for penetration.

Fielding first on what looked a good batting surface, Gruenberg seized the initiative as iiPriyuff Uglaxx and Xxuddu Gguddu reduced Darmen to 92-5, but Foster Cock and Giacanto Obando recovered with a 122 run sixth wicket stand. Obando was especially severe on the spinners, Yowoax and Spanglepants Croffnuppet combining for 119 runs off 21 overs, while Cock went on to a second century of the series to set up a total of 315. On a true surface it looked below par, and Pitkin Deisler continued his rich form in response, as Gruenberg raced to 62-2 by the close, Naroadnig and nightgoatherd Yowoax falling in successive balls to Sha'ul Patterson.

While no Gruenberger batsman made a hundred for the first time in five Tests, the team passed 400 as four players notched fifties. The best innings came from number ten Croffnuppet, who atoned from a limpid bowling display with a swashbuckling career best 43*, adding 71 with Uvaevaluvae. Spinner Bysshe Marino showed up the Gruenberger slow bowlers with his six wicket haul, but his batsmen were not able to give him a big enough total to bowl at in the fourth innings as Darmen crumbled to 157 all out. Croffnuppet recovered from the first innings with 4-56, while Kynaston's painstaking 58 failed to find support.

Gruenberg enter the final Test assured of retaining their number 1 ranking but seeking a whitewash to solidify their position ahead of a tough tour to Wray. The biggest uncertainty remains their middle order: while Gezzalqin will be given another chance, there are also signs that Laffphax Wuffan will take the place of Yowoax, giving the team a four seam attack and strengthening the middle order.

    Expected XI:
    1. Pitkin Deisler (LHB)
    2. Yeepers Naroadnig (c, LHB, SLA)
    3. Ruttup Izaizakanorb (RHB)
    4. BL Enchante (RHB, RM/OB)

Gruenberg absolutely pounded by massive amounts of Cock

Gruenberg crashed to a dismal 109 run defeat in the final Test against Darmen. They leave with the series win and their number 1 ranking in tact, but the poor performance will have dulled hopes ahead of their big tour to Wray. Adding to the sense of gloom was that the failings were all too familiar: an inability to maintain pressure in the field with missed chances and misfields, and a threadbare middle order that, with Benny Enchante in the worst form of his life, is simply too easy to run through.

To be sure, Enchante's failures - he had an abysmal tour - are in a sense cause for optimism. The team has been heavily dependent on him in the past, and managing to win without his runs gives hope for even stronger showings once his runs inevitably return. There is no danger of the star batsman being dropped either, so he will have to hope that Wray's bowlers forget about his fear of the short ball or else another rocky tour looms.

Yeepers Naroadnig emerged with some positives to take. Azzawozzawoowizzbitz Telliflikkiflarknon and Kahunk Uvaevaluvae had excellent tours, giving Gruenberg great options in the lower middle order; Spanglepants Croffnuppet, while frequently expensive, was always a wicket taking strike bowler in the tradition of Pistal Nejjimhio; and himself and Pitkin Deisler put together a sustained set of solid opening partnerships.

But the negatives weigh heavy. No middle order batsman established himself - Ruttup Izaizakanorb has yet to make a century and Kakuwat Gezzalqin looks set to be dropped again - and the experiment of playing seam bowling allrounders did not work, with neither Laffphax Wuffan nor Xxuddu Gguddu really looking fit for Test match cricket.

Against Wray, he is likely to demand a proper third seamer, whether it be another chance for iiFobo Yumbucket, or the default option of o'Po'o'To'o'So Bant. With neither Surro Juffwump nor Nernoiks Likkilai making a case at domestic level, Whimwhob Tootash, whose bold experiment to play in Liventia has surprised the Gruenberger establishment, is in line for a call up, while Lemonzesty Yowoax will play to ensure some economy alongside Croffnuppet's erratic brilliance.

    Expected XI:
    1. Pitkin Deisler (LHB)
    2. Yeepers Naroadnig (c, LHB, SLA)
    3. Ruttup Izaizakanorb (RHB)

Following Darmen's 1-2 series loss to Gruenberg at home, Cricket Wectnchil (or Cricket Weekly for you non-Legonian speakers) sat down with Darmeni captain Matthew Johnson to talk about the series, the trip to Patistan and Darmeni cricket in general.

Q: Give us your overall view on how things went with Gruenberg.
A: Not exactly the way I wanted it to go. I expected to lose the series sure, playing against the number one team in the multiverse is no easy task, but I definitely expected it to be closer than it was. There were some individuals as well, who, after playing well against Jeckland, I thought would continue their good form into the Gruenberg series, but didn't.

Q: You say you expected to lose, but shouldn't a captain be more optimistic, even when facing a tough opponent like Gruenberg?
A: I was optimistic, just realistic in the overall result. Sha'ul Patterson had performed outstandingly against Jeckland, and I was certain he'd give Gruenberg a hard time. In the end, he only took five wickets compared to the 23 he took against Jeckland. My own bowling was fairly disapointing, taking three less than I did against Jeckland and giving up a fair many runs as well. Had we performed better bowling, I think we would have had several closer matches, and a tighter overall series. I still think Gruenberg would have won though, overall they are the better team.

You've highlighted the bowling performance of the team, but what about the batting?
A: Foster Cock was outstanding, his three centuries key to keeping the matches competitive. I think if he hadn't fallen as early as he did in the second innings of the second test, we could certainly have taken that match to a fourth day, possibly even a fifth. Aside from Cock though, myself and Mandelbaum were fairly disapointing. Mandelbaum's high score for the series of 50 is certainly not something you want, nor expect, from your opener, while I had several innings that ended way to short.

Q: Moving on to the tour of Patistan, can you explain your team selection for the first test?
A: I'm leaving Mandelbaum in simply because I hope to restore some confidence in him. He'll be facing some inexperienced bowlers, Patistan has never played in test cricket before, and the deeper into his innings he goes, the better time he'll have against fatigued bowlers. I'm pairing him with Cock in the hopes of putting up some massive numbers in the opening partnership.

Kynaston had two half centuries against Gruenberg, and several times helped stabilize us after a collapse. The second innings of the second test comes to mind there. Austyn Kimberley, who scored the least runs among the batsmen to play in all three matches will be replaced by Fionntan Bradley, who's played for us before, and who had a good season last year domestically.

In terms of the bowling attack, I'm dropping Abbiati and West from the lineup and replacing them with Alger Díaz and Lex Dreesens. Abbiati took only one wicket in three matches, while West, despite taking nine wickets, is complaining of soreness in both shoulders. Díaz will give us another spin option, and will hopefully take some of the load off of Marino.

Q: Do you expect to win the series against Patistan?
A: I do, but I think it will be a challenge. They've played decently in the shorter forms of the game, but this is their first ever test season, so they're a bit of an unknown. We've also never played in Patistan, so we'll need to learn the conditions quickly.

Q: Moving away from the cricket on the pitch to the cricket off it, you played you're second match of the season against Jeckland at the 1,200 seat Chad City Cricket Ground. That's an incredibly small ground. Do you know why the DCF decided to play there, and again in a future test against Gloriax later this season?
A: From my understanding, it has everything to do with finances. According to one of your own articles, only three clubs are projected to make a profit this season, while 23 clubs are in debt. Chad City are one of those clubs, and hosting a test match, especially one that goes all five days, can be an incredible thing when it comes to making much needed money.

Q: But the DCF just changed the format of domestic first class cricket from five day matches to four day matches. That's one less day to open the gates and sell tickets, isn't it?
A: Yes, but that change was brought about by the need for a shorter calendar. Every club will play 20 T20 and List A matches, for a total of 40 matches, while Division 1 clubs will play 10 first class matches. Those first class matches will take up 40 days, while under the old format they'd take up 50. Add in the number of international matches we're expecting to play this year, and the later months are beginning to look a bit busy as we try to squeeze in the matches before the end of the year.

Q: One final question, do you think playing test matches against top teams like Gruenberg is a good idea, especially if it might hurt our ranking, and therefore our chances of qualifying for the GCF Invitational Trophy?
A: I think the Invitational Trophy is the exact reason why we need to be playing test series against top teams like Gruenberg and Chelta. Yes, our ranking might be hurt by losing the series, but if we win, the reward will be massive. And of course, playing against associates all season long won't do anything to help our ranking or bring the fans through the turnstiles.

As an aside – I'm thinking of relaxing Full Member criterion to bolster the FM numbers before the end-of-season cutoff for the Invitational Trophy, as we currently have only eight FMs and the GCFIT is meant to take the top 8 FMs. So, unless there are any objections, after Matchweek 8, any team that's played eight ranking matches (rather than the current 10) will be a Full Member. This means TBI and Gloriax will gain FM status, as will Goram after their series against Liventia and ASCS should they play another series this season.

Sterne, Aguando secure promising draw

Wray came into this match with an XI unchanged from the one that secured the narrowest victory in GCF history*, when they overcame Patsitan by a solitary run after Jackson Colt grasped an edge off Shane Aguando in the fading light in Albion. It was a perfect start - for the neutrals at least - to the city's test hosting history.

The visitors, on their first trip to the Colony, have come off the back of a strong series victory of Darmen, although their most recent fixture ended defeat by 109 runs. Wray's coaching staff have identified the short ball as the key tactic to be unfurled against the tourists, with Blake Matthews expected to play a pivotal role if things were going to fall the Green Caps' way.

A sell-out at the TM Parker Bayside Stadium, an unusually warm and sunny one at that, greeted the captains at the toss and Simon Sterne won the toss and elected to bat on an unusually friendly looking Bayside wicket - it seems the message of 'fast-bowling barrage' had filtered down to the groundstaff and a suitable pitch had been prepared.

Ed McCaughey, whilst not fearing for his place, could have used a good innings, and Jackson Colt had slipped off the boil ever so slightly, so there was much interest as the opening pair strode to the crease on the opening day. Uglaxx, with his shuffled action, bowled his opening spell at what could liberally be called 'fast-medium', although Colt and McCaughey were troubled by few deliveries. Colt tucked into Telliflikkiflarknon early, pushing him past mid-on for four before rocking back and cutting a wide delivery through point for another boundary. Gruenberg's opening bowling unit possessed the decent fundamentals: good lines and decent pace, but sadly, they couldn't piece them together enough to pose a constant threat; too often did Uglaxx offer up a 73mph dolly or Telliflikkiflarknon spray a ball off the square. Yumbucket was brought on soon enough, and almost made the breakthrough when Colt pushed away from his body to a seaming delivery, only for the edge to spilled uncharacteristically by Benny Enchante at 1st slip. This catch deemed costly, as Colt raced away to a half century off just 34 balls, punishing the visitors attack with 10 boundaries in his opening salvo. He didn't fear striding out of his crease, even when Naroadnig brought keeper Uvaevaluvae up to the stumps, and successively slapped Telliflikkiflarknon first over extra-cover and then straight down the ground in a display that got the 12,000 strong crowd really buzzing.

Wray were rattling along very nicely for 20 overs before lunch, bringing up the 100 in just 91 balls as the openers cashed in on the good surface and poor bowling with 50s, and going into the break on 118 without loss, but McCaughey just couldn't resist pushing at a Uglaxx delivery which seamed away, and his edge was taken low by Enchante this time. A timely breakthrough just after lunch for the tourists. Colt went cheaply the next over to put a dampener on Wray's efforts, when his attempted slog sweep caught the top-edge and was taken by Tootash at deep-square leg off the bowling of leg-spinner Croffnuppet. Glenn Mitchell and Simon Sterne came together and were more reserved at the crease, with Mitchell particularly wary against the spin of Croffnuppet, whose darting leg-spin action had caused him problems in the past. The pair added 50 in more sedate fashion, 87 balls, and the session passed without much incident, tea being taken with the hosts cruising at 199-2.

Mitchell was dismissed soon after tea thanks to a blinding catch from Ruttup Izaizakanorb at cover-point. Uglaxx had laid down another half-volley, and Mitchell opened his stance to flay the ball away. He middled the ball perfectly, but Izaizakanorb, standing not 20 yards from the bat, somehow got low enough and darted out a left hand and somehow clung onto the ball. Neither Uglaxx nor Mitchell could believe that the catch had been taken, but their reactions were in stark contrast: the Gruenberger wheeling away to celebrate ecstatically, whilst Mitchell trudged off, thoroughly unamused. This wicket brought Jamie Jackson to the crease, who'd shown a few weaknesses against spin during his time against Patistan, and immediately the captain Naroadnig brought himself on against young batsman. In his first over, Jackson played and missed at two, and was soon joined at the crease by three close Gruenberger fielders. But as he had shown against Chelta, Jackson could survive tricky periods, and showed his class soon afterwards, lofting Naroadnig over cow-corner for four. He looked confident against the spinner, and looked to be set for another half-century, but it was the extra pace of Telliflikkiflarknon which did for him on 31, when he was hurried by a shorter ball and he could only fend the ball down to second slip.

Jason Keillher had been in rich run-scoring form recently, and had finally began to justify all these selections as the teams premier all-rounder, and he began in much the same vein against the tourists. He practically battered Croffnuppet out of the attack, smiting him clean down the track for for, before punishing him through cover for another. The captain wisely chose to remove the leg-spinner and brought back himself in an attempt to get another breakthrough before the close, and this proved to be an inspired move, when five overs before the end of play, he lured Sterne, who had passed his 6th Test century, out of his crease and spun the ball past his leg-stump, where Uvaevaluvae almost made a hash of things, but managed to bundle the bails back off before the captain could get back. Captain dismisses captain, and Wray closed shortly afterwards on 354-5.

The second began with Keillher looking to accelerate, and he bludgeoned his way to 50 off 70 balls, with 9 boundaries. He then went after Yumbucket, hooking him over deep backward square for six, but Yumbucket was disappointed to see him dropped on the boundary three balls later Tootash making a mess of a swirler, much to the delight of the crowd, which numbered around 8,000 for the second day. Stacey nicked off from Yowoax for 12, which began a stellar spell of spin bowling which saw him take all 5 of Wray's last wickets for 79 runs. Jackson Storm smashed him for two boundaries in a rapid-fire 22, but he struck back when Storm was outdone by the turning ball and was nabbed at short leg by Yumbucket. He had Matthews soon afterwards, edging to slip as the ball skidded low, and then bowled a ripper to Ben Monnier first ball, squaring up the youngster and having him caught at short leg the very first ball. Monnier is yet to score a run in three test matches. Keillher tonked the left-armer down the ground for six, whilst Aguando hacked a pair of boundaries off Croffnuppet, before Yowoax completed his 5fer by dismissing fellow spinner when Aguando tamely chipped to mid-on to end Wray's innings on a still intimidating 451 all out.

With greying skies overheard, Deisler and Naroadnig faced up to Storm for the start of Gruenberg's innings, and immediately Simon Sterne was in the quick's ear, presumably something along the lines of 'pitch it short'. That's exactly what followed with the first ball of the innings, Storm spearing in a rapid bouncer on leg-stump, which Deisler managed to pull out of the way of at the last moment. Storm deployed another two bouncers in the over, and the message was very clear. Ben Monnier, more of a fuller-length bowler, stuck to his guns and saw Deisler play and miss at the first delivery, as he swiped at a non-existent bouncer. Blake Matthews, all 6ft 7" of him, tore in from the Pavillion End and extracted substantial bounce from the wicket, and managed to brush the glove of Naroadnig, but the ball soared over Stacey and ran away for four runs. The pair overcame the early barrage, and dug in with a solid 50-run partnership, typified by quick singles and few expansive strokes. But Matthews wasn't to be denied, and he had the visitor's captain on 28 when a sharp bouncer reared up and Naroadnig gloved it to Sterne at slip. Izaizakanorb came in and played a grafting knock, but he saw Deisler fall at the other end for 47, when he reached forward to an Aguando delivery which held it's line and edged behind.

Things went from good to great for wray two balls later, when Aguando delivered a pearl of a delivery to dismiss the evergreen Benny Enchante, who'd been on a horror run with the bat. Aguando flicked out a wrong-un which drifted across the right hander. Enchante moved to block, the ball kicked out of the pitch and seared past the bat and clipped the top of off stump. Pitching on leg and clipping off, every leggie's dream, and the celebrations certainly showed as much. Izaizakanorb accumulated quietly and brought up a measured 50, but he was dismissed 7 runs later when Jason Keillher fired an 89mph delivery past his outside edge, and was gathered by Stacey. Keillher and the slip cordon all went up, but the umpire remained unmoved. Sterne, with consultation from Stacey and Keillher, went for the review. Both SpotHot and Snik-Yo confirmed Sterne's beliefs, Izaizakanorb had clearly edged the ball, kissing the outside of his bat, and he was on his way.

Telliflikkiflarknon came out guns blazing, and dispatched Aguando for a brace of fours, before lifting Ben Monnier over mid-on for a six. As soon as Sterne brought Matthews back on and the bouncers came flying in, Telliflikkiflarknon flailed. He hooked and missed at a bouncer, got struck in the ribcage by another, before he gloved the third one through to Stacey. It was a perfect demonstration of hostile fast bowling from Matthews, and he got his just rewards. Tootash and new batsman Uvaevaluvae remained solid till the close of play, with Gruenberg 190-5, still 261 in arrears.

Gruenberg consolidated in the morning, and despite ample swing from Storm and Monnier, as well as a tricky chance for Jackson at point, the pair pushed on till lunch, adding 60 on to the total and taking the away side past the follow-on. Tootash brought up his 50 off a very sedate 167 balls, but Uvaevaluvae couldn't keep going as he got an inside edge onto his pads which was held by Jackson Colt inches from the ground at short leg. Yowoax, next in, hit a sweet drive off Monnier, but was removed four balls later after ill-advisedly charging out against Aguando, only to see the ball move past his edge and for Stacey to whip off the stumps. Tootash brought up a century off 245 balls, a paragon of calm batting on a lively track, working the spinner well whilst avoiding the worst of what the seamers could throw at him. It all ended, though, just when he was looking to get a move on. A straighter, full delivery from Matthews was missed by Tootash's leg-side swipe, and he was pinned in front of the leg-stump. Croffnuppet, Uglaxx & Yumbucket did their best to stick around, using up a frustrating 205 balls to be dismissed. Storm removed Croffnuppet with an unplayable yorker, and then Yumbucket was dismissed by a bit of a collector's item, a wicket for Glenn Mitchell. Jamie Jackson had taken most of the part-time bowling duties, laying down 9 overs of economical leg-spin, but he was off the field when Matthews requested a change of end, so Mitchell was thrown the ball.

To call Mitchell medium-pace is generous. His first ball was more of a quick spinners delivery, floating down at 54mph which a touch of inswing. Yumbucket defended it easily enough. But the second was a tad quicker, 59mph, but not to mention wide and short down the leg side, but somehow Yumbucket got himself into a tangle and managed to flick the ball to Stacey. Mitchell's second test wicket (his other one came against Chelta) signalled the end of Gruenberg's innings, all done on 360, trailing by 91.

Wray had plenty of time left in the game, and wanted to set an imposing total to chase, and Jackson Colt tried to imitate his first innings form with a slap-dash 39 with 6 fours before he was the first wicket to fall, lbw to the first-innings hero Yowoax - Wray batsmen seemed to struggle with his flatter angle. A leisurely partnership between Sterne and McCaughey ensued, with the game slowing down to a crawl as the spinners bowled in tandem and the batsmen looked unfussed to increase the rate. Sterne fell for 31, trying to play the ball fine off Naroadnig, and for the second time in the match, he saw himself dismissed by the opposition captain, caught behind. Glenn Mitchell and Jamie Jackson were both out in rapid succession, both LBW, Mitchell to Croffnuppet and Jackson to Yumbucket. Keillher smited a few fours, but played down totally the wrong line against Yowoax and was pinned in front. McCaughey remained resolute at the other end, and looked on course for a needed century, but he was dismissed for 95, when Croffnuppet slid a ball across his bat and the opener edged to Enchante at slip, the ageing batsman managing to throw himself to his right to pouch the catch.

Jackson Storm and Julian Stacey had some fun at the end, making quick 30s as Gruenberg's bowlers perhaps waned in concentration, offering numerous half-volleys and short deliveries which Storm and Stacey tucked into. Stacey knocked two sixes, one off Croffnuppet over midwicket, and then the second off Yumbucket which climbed out of the stadium over long-on. The partnership was finished, and Wray declared, when Storm was lbw to Uglaxx. The review was used, more out of hope than judgement, but the umpire was confirmed and Wray declared on 276-7d, leaving Gruenberg needing an improbably 367 to win, with 2 sessions left and with rain in the air.

Wray did manage to prise out five wickets in a decent bowling performance. Naroadnig was LBW to Keillher for 7, before Aguando saw his half-tracker bunted into the hands of Jamie Jackson at cover-point from Deisler. Ben Monnier finally got his name in the wickets column when he unleashed a screaming yorker at 89mph to Izaizakanorb, and the view from the stump-cam confirmed the ferocity of the deliver, the cherry breaking the camera. Storm got Enchante with a ball that stayed straight for 4. Telliflikkiflarknon played a belligerent knock for 64, with 10 fours and a steepling six off Aguando, but he edged off Monnier. The rain came in and this time stayed, ending the match in a draw with a handshake between the two captains.

The series now moves onto Cartersburg, where Wray will repIace Monnier, who will return to domestic cricket, but got a promise from David Shepard that he will return to the starting XI. Christian Dawson-Lane will return.

TG me Gruenberg if I've made any incorrect assumptions.

Article posted on the GruenCric website. Last one, I promise.
Clouds fail to cover Enchante's poor form

A question never before asked in Gruenberger cricketing history is now nudging uncomfortably to the forefront: should Benny Enchante be dropped? The star is a national celebrity and cultural icon, a supremely goat-enabled hero to billions of Gruenberger cricket fans, and the holder of just about every national batting record, but his form has now been in such a prolonged nosedive it is difficult to see how he can maintain his place on anything but reputation should the string of single figure scores and apathetic fielding performances continue.

His performance in the first Test in Wray was an embarrassment. He conceded more runs in dropped catches and misfields than he scored with the bat,and he faced the first indication that his place may be under threat after captain Yeepers Naroadnig admitted "senior players were not playing their part" following the disappointing performance that saw rain intervene to help Gruenberg scrap a losing draw after the Wray batsmen feasted on wayward Gruenberger bowling and Wray seamers terrorised the top order over five days of playing second gruffle*.

The working relationship between Naroadnig and Enchante was always predicted to be strained. Despite being Gruenberg's two longest serving players - they are the only two members of the current side who played in Gruenberg's inaugural Test - they have never been personally close, Naroadnig's capable cricketing achievements outshone by Enchante's brilliance, but the captaincy denied to the mercurial talent and instead given to the steadier figure. But the conflict runs deeper, and represents the duality of modern Gruenberg.

Naroadnig is deeply religious, noted for his extremely long beard and frequent references to Holy Mother Wena's Divine And Most Goat-Enabled Prowess during his post match references. From the rural north of Gruenberg, he represents the old, conservative base of the country, its past as an agricultural theocracy. Enchante, by contrast, has skirted from liberal Wenaism to outright apostasy during the "Textsgate" fiasco, clashed with Viziery and High Priest authorities, and has come to be seen as a symbol of the new Gruenberg. A son of the urban south, from the busy, cosmopolitan port city of Merlefurt, he has been seen drinking alcohol, has taken part in garish reality TV shows, and was once found in a state of undress with 17 members of the Sultanic Harem.

This division has always been a delicate balance within the team. Zambuimmi Hengtridan was an obsessive centrist who skilfully navigated both religious and modernist sensibilities, but Naroadnig has shown no such diplomacy. Among current players, Azzawozzawoowizzbitz Telliflikkiflarknon, Ruttup Izaizakanorb, Kahunk Uvaevaluvae and Spanglepants Croffnuppet are thought to sympathise with Naroadnig - Izaizakanorb's pathetic attempts at growing a beard notwithstanding - while Naroadnig's opening partner Pitkin Deisler is the most obvious ally for Enchante.

Enchante is unlikely to lose his place for the next Test - Gruenberg will probably announce an unchanged side despite the poor showing - with little competition for middle order places, but the standout debut of Whimwhob Tootash, who became the fourth Gruenberger batsman to make a century in his first Test innings, will add pressure should any of Kakuwat Gezzalqin, Surro Juffwump or Plopples Hrrrg find some domestic form, while Eightyseven Otterbiscuits or Tchokoman Warax would offer an intriguing T20-inspired option given Naroadnig's clear lack of faith in his own left arm spin since acceding to the captaincy. But pressure will continue to grow until he is able to conjure up another goat-enabled innings. Knowing Enchante, it may be just such pressure that draws the best from him once more.
* The gruffle is a Gruenberger stringed instrument, similar to a fiddle, and featured in such notable works as "Symphony to a Goat", "Concerto for Two Goats", and "The Ten Billion Goat March".

Six Balls from Heaven

Fast bowling is a fine art. Balancing speed, movement and aggression whilst renaming feasible in an international team is a difficult task. When you look at it from a purely physical point of view, it seems a crazy exertion, sprinting in and hurling a small sphere of cork and leather at over 90 miles an hour, trying to hit some 18-inch high sticks which is being blocked by a man wearing the modern-day equivalent (in sports at least) of chain-link armour, wielding his willow sword. Its an unforgiving, terrifying effort, and that's what separates bowlers like Jackson Storm from the penny-a-dozen fast-mediums being churned out by every cricket playing nation in the world.

It's day 3. Cartersburg Oval. For the third successive day, the sky is overcast and there is a bubble of anticipation in the 9,000 strong crowd. Gruenberg had closed the day in a decent position, 33 runs behind Wray. As is tradition with Wray on a new day's cricket, Simon Sterne tosses the ball to Shane Aguando who lays down a steady over of less-then-threatening chinaman bowling. Telliflikkiflarknon and Uvaevaluvae see off the spin and take a single off the the second over, a loosener from Blake Matthews. Sterne then handed the cherry calmly to Jackson Storm. He just his usual routine at the top of his mark, turning his upper body on his hips. Once. Twice. He windmills his arms and does a dummy delivery to mid-on. 23 yards away from the crease, he starts with a few small steps before breaking into a rapid stride. He approaches the crease, passes the umpire and delivers the ball.

It's fierce, full length and swinging away. Telliflikkiflarknon plants one foot forward and flashes his bat as the ball tails away. It grazes the outside edge and flies away to the second of three slips. It drops low, slightly, but Glenn Mitchell throws his hands forwards and scoops the ball up. Storm doesn't see this until he is fully through his follow-through, but he hears the crowd's roar and looks up expectantly, before raising one arm and rushing over to to Mitchell, being embraced by his team-mates. Shane Aguando jogs all the way over from fine leg and gives the cursory platonic bum-slap. There is general merriment, a well-timed wicket at the start of the day's play. But just you wait.

He stalks back to the top of his mark, that glint in his eye. The ball is held with a straight seam, two fingers either side of the bruised mark. He stops a second, the new batsman takes his guard. They both formulate plans on how to deal with one another. Storm's is pretty straightforward. Full. Fast. Simple. Let the ball talk. One, two, his legs start again, pounding in towards the cut-strip. Once again, past the umpire and in. This ball another ripper, full and on the stumps. Fearing for his toes, Croffnuppet backed away and poked his bat forward. The ball pitched and moved away slightly, kissing the edge and flying through at perfect height for Storm at 1st slip, who celebrated before the ball was in his gloves. There was no doubt about this one, and Storm knew it was gone. The bowling had reached a stage where both the deliverer and receiver knew it was too good, and if it could have happened, then Storm and Croffnuppet would have shaken hands in the middle and the Gruenberger would have been spared the pain.

The third ball, the hat-trick, reached a level of skill that was so ridiculously good that to get a wicket from it was simply impossible. A sharply directed bouncer, rapidly at Uglaxx. He threw his bat blindly, more in hope than judgement, and the ball took a looping edge down past the keeper and rolled to a stop before Aguando at Short Leg. Storm stood, double tea-pot, on the middle of the strip, knowing fully well that he'd be warned. Uglaxx adjusted his glove at the non-strikers end, thankful that he was away from the assault.

As if he were peeved that he hadn't claimed his hat-trick, he charged in against Uvaevaluvae. A good length, jagging in and taking the edge off the keeper's strangled cut shot. The ball rose high to the cordon, where Sterne jumped and tried to pluck it, but instead knocked it up into the air with greatly reduced speed, and Stacey just had to step to the right and pouch the catch. Queue yet more pandemonium, from both the crowd and the players on the pitch.

Number 11 Yumbucket only put his helmet on as he arrived at the crease. He'd had a word with the departing batsman, presumably something along the lines of "Good luck, mate." He'd need the luck, with Storm in this mood. But, as everyone knew, he had no chance. Storm prowled in with vengeance, this ball steaming with fast-bowling fury. Push and hope, Yumbucket must have thought. It would have been more sensible to leave, although the angles were impossible close, but the ball seemed to attract the bat, and as with the previous three, the edge was taken and Stacey completed the dismissal. Storm leapt into the arms of the significantly shorter Jamie Jackson who had been fielding at mid-on. Celebrations lasted a good 30 seconds; Storm had destroyed Gruenberg.

What made this better than your typical (if this kind of thing can be typical) furious spell of fast bowling, was the perfect control of the subtleties of fast-swing bowling. Any old quick can charge in and take a wicket by bowling fast enough and beating the bat to hit the pads or stumps, but Storm used the moisture, the graceful swin to nab his wickets. The deliveries, one, two, four and five, were phenomenal, how they managed to find the edge is beyond everyone, even Storm himself. If you watch one piece of fast bowling ever, watch this.

Gruenberg wither in the sight of Storm's amazing balls

Gruenberg's lame form in Test season continued after they fell to hosts Wray in the Second Test at the Cartersburg Oval, going 1-0 down in the series with hope of victory now beyond them. A margin of 55 runs did not truly reflect the gulf between the two teams, and five Tests into his captaincy stint Yeepers Naroadnig is facing serious questions over his own form - without a hundred since the season began and his bowling having regressed beyond comparison - and that of star batsman Benny Enchante, who endured yet another terrible match, with two turgid innings totalling 22 runs from 81 balls, beaten and bullied by the Wray pacers and finally put out of his misery by a regulation stock ball from Shane Aguando that he simply missed.

Going into the final Test, both teams may play unchanged sides* but their fortunes could not be more different at this stage. Every Wray player has contributed runs or wickets during the course of the series - Glenn Mitchell is without a fifty but his sharp slip catching and even a bonus wicket with his part-time bowling have played their part. By contrast, few Gruenbergers can be secure of their place for the forthcoming tour to the Affiliated South Califan Sprawls. Despite that, Gruenberg's lack of bench strength in middle order batting and seam bowling mean they be forced to turn out the same losing XI.

Should Gruenberg lose the series, Naroadnig's place will undoubtedly be under review, but it is less clear whether the GCB would ever consider dropping Enchante despite his string of low scores, disinterested fielding performances and habitual failure to meet fitness targets. At home, defenders of the ever-popular star rallied behind him with a mass rally in support of "Benny Baa-Baa" outside his Merlefurt mansion. Speaking to media in Wray, Enchante thanked the well-wishers for their support, before ordering the dirty plebs to get off his property before he set the dogs in them.
