Scene: Postmatch during the packing period for the non-qualifiers:

NT: Hunter. Open up in there.
HW: What the hell... oh, it's you.
NT: There's still hope. You have a full day to prepare for your Best Second Place Playoff group.
HW: Is that a bad thing?
NT: No. It just means that all of our (referring to himself, Ashley Tyler, and Edgar Waltrip) focus is going to be on you preparing. I think that's a good thing, to have Walamzia's top 3 tennis players help you out throughout the course of the playoff group.
HW: You sure? I don't think I can take it.
NT: We're definitely sure. We want you to succeed here, and this is your shot in.

Antillia Tennis Club
Antillia, Costa de Ouro
Tuesday evening

A number of tennis players have come to the Antillia Tennis Club in order to hear the official announcement of the Antillia Masters’ Main Draw for the singles and doubles tournaments. Among the tennis players are a few Andromedan players, mostly singles players.

Britt Mack, John Galt, Carmen Doyle, Riley Escobar and Maggie Cho have all been waiting for the main draw to begin. All five are in attendance tonight. All four of the Andromedan doubles teams also made the draw. Two of them are currently spending the night in São Alberto. Russ Knox and Lupe Gomez are at the hotel. They’ll leave to meet up with the other two teams tomorrow at the Black Cliffs near Conceicão.

Among the crowd at the Tennis Club are Ray Thomas and Hayley Van Pelt, who want to see who they will play in a couple of days. After waiting for a while, they both wait outside with Esperanza Cho.

“Didn’t you lose your last match,” Thomas asks.

“I got a text. They still want me and a few others who came in second to be here,” Cho said.

Thomas laughs.

“What’s so funny?”

“You came in second in your group. Have they told you you’re still out?”

“No.”

“Have they told you you’re in?”

“No.”

“There’s still a chance for you to make the draw,” Thomas says. “But you’ll have to win three matches in 36 hours. And when you get through that, you’ll be too tired to face your first round opponent.”

“Unless she looks at the matches as practice,” Van Pelt suggests.

“Practice?”

“Hey, when life hands you a lemon, suck on it.”

Sometimes, Hayley Van Pelt has a way with words.

“Go back to the hotel,” Thomas tells Esperanza. “We’ll tell you what’s up when we get back. You’ll need all the rest you can get.”

Thomas, Van Pelt and Esperanza look down the walkway and see Russ Knox walking back to the hotel. Knox walks over and approaches the three. As he approaches, he puts his hand in his pocket. He pulls out a jewelry box.

“Don’t start blabbing to the others.”

Knox opens up the jewelry box. Inside is a diamond ring.

“Lupe and I have been together for so long,” Knox says. “I figure I’d tell her tomorrow at the edge of the black cliffs.”

Both Thomas and Van Pelt are excited.

“See, Ray. It’s like a fairy tale. First Bryce and Kelly on Sunday. Now Russ and Lupe tomorrow.”

“We won’t tell a soul,” Thomas says.

“Hayley!” Maggie Cho yells to the group, “The Prince is here.”

Van Pelt, Thomas and the Chos go in to see the Crown Prince of Costa de Ouro, who also heads the Costa de Ouro Tennis Association. Thomas checks his iPhone. The last qualification match ended a few minutes ago. According to tournament tradition, the winner of the last match is spirited to the tennis club before the tournament draw is unveiled. A golf cart rolls up to the entrance. Two referees escort the player through the back so he can arrive on stage and meet the Prince and the other tournament officials.

The player arrives. An official receives credentials from the referees, indicating that 1) the winner of this match would qualify for the main draw and 2) the person they brought was the winner of the match. A second official goes back stage and writes the person’s name on the official tournament draw. The player shakes hands and talks with the Crown Prince, dressed in his naval uniform. A tournament official adds the final name to the singles draw.

Maggie Cho walks over to Erin Trent and Kay Jackson, who are all standing in the back. Trent and Jackson are eating hors-d'oeuvres.

“So, are you all in?”

“Kay is,” Trent says. “I’m not.”

“What about Esperanza,” Jackson asks.

“Everyone…,” the host of the event yells from the stage. “The moment we’ve all been waiting for. First, the doubles draw.

The curtain opens. After a few minutes, the crowd has taken in the doubles draw.

“And before the singles draw is revealed… we will have a brief competition for the last spot in the singles draw. Six players will compete for the one spot. The draw will be full once that competition concludes tomorrow night.

Erin Trent’s tournament is over. Her teammate, Esperanza Cho still has a slim chance of making the draw. Trent sends a text to Britt Mack, who’s talking to a few black guys. Mack looks at her phone.

TELL ME ABT ESPY CHO – ERIN!

Mack looks across the room at Trent. It appears they’re on the same page.

'Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. Scene: Hotel lobby, approx. 2PM

A man walks in wearing an outfit that resembles what someone would wear in the 1920s. He proceeds to the front desk and requests a meeting with the manager.

Man: Ma'am, my name is George Lupin, and I am the Minister of Magic in Walamzia, and I wish to see Nate Tomlinson, if he has a minute.
Manager: He's probably out at the tennis court with Hunter today. Hunter has 3 huge matches coming up tomorrow; he'll have to win 3 in 36 hours, so he's just finishing up the final prep work. I'll go check on him.
Lupin: No, that won't be necessary. I just need to get up to the conference room on the 5th floor.
Manager: Ah, I'll take you straight there.
Lupin: Thank you, ma'am. Oh, tell your kitchen staff that they will not be required to cook dinner for the tennis players or some of the guests in this hotel. Another note: you'll be hearing lots of banging noises at around 5PM.
Manager: I'm from Walamzia, you don't have to explain it. I'll explain to everyone what's going on.
Lupin: Of course. Shall we go?
Manager: Right this way.

7AM that morning

The Zaienrs wake Nate up to give him a surprise.

WZ: nate, get up bro!
NT: What do you want? You guys packed?
WZ: Yes. Dan's waiting for me outside. Just wanted to give you a letter I got for you last night from an owl.
NT: Very strange. See you guys later.
Will hands him a present.
NT: What's this for?
WZ: Wanna look at the calendar again
NT: Shit, it's my birthday already?
WZ: Yep. Happy birthday bro!
NT: Thanks. See you soon.

Ashley wakes up after the noise.

AT: Happy birthday, Nate.
NT: Thanks. I have something to open.
Nate opens it up. it reads:
Dear Mr. Tomlinson,

We would like to inform you that we are so happy to know that you are alive and well. Mr. Weasley tells us that you are in excellent spirits since your father and mother's untimely passings, and that you have found a way to survive in the Muggle world by showcasing the athletic abilities we knew you had when you were a little boy. As such, we are holding a celebration in your honor at the hotel you are currently staying at 7PM tonight. As always, we are so proud of you.

Sincerely yours,
Aldon Opus
Director of Muggle Relations
Ministry of Magic

PS: Give our best to Mr. Washburn as he prepares for his Lucky Loser playoff group.

Well, looks like we'll be meeting some extended family of ours tonight, Ash.
AT: OK... this is getting weird.
NT: Don't think of it as weird... think of it as a chance to get to know people you'd never meet otherwise.
AT: I guess I'll go along with it.
NT: Gotta get Hunter ready first.

*Throughout the day, Nate prepares Hunter for the Lucky Loser playoff.*

Conference Room, 4PM

Mr. Lupin is in the room with several tables and chairs. He is attempting to set things up without causing too much of a stir. Then, some loud bangs happen.

Kendall Perkins, the former manager of the Rottington Quidditch Academy's U-9 team, along with the U-9 Class of 2004. Nate was a member of that class.

GL: Mr. Perkins, it's good that you've come on such short notice.
KP: Mr. Lupin... to be honest, the only surprising thing was where Nate's 20th birthday party was to be located. We've been preparing for this since his mother -- God keep her soul -- passed.
GL: Such a tragedy to befall such a great young Quidditch player... to be stripped from his world and into the Muggle one by his father after his retirement, then to have both parents pass within a year of each other... such a shame.
KP: Well, you can thank me. Put a little charm on the weather to make it rain for a couple days so we can have it on his birthday without the need for him to prepare for a match the next day.

More dignitaries begin to arrive. including Mr. Matt Tanklar, Nate's grandmother's nephew, his next of kin in terms of wizards. The two have never met.

At around 6PM, the candles are set and the ceremony is prepared. At 6:30, the traditional chicken stuffed with milawi, a special wizarding spice put in food as a symbol of good luck, is being prepared in the hotel kitchen and charmed by the magical chefs down there, much to the dismay of the regular Muggle chefs. At 7PM, a familiar set of faces shows up outside Suite 502.

Ashley opens the door. His face is priceless.
AT: What are you doing here, Dad?
Matt Tyler: Sorry for not telling you, Ash. I wanted to hide from that world after I got cut out of the magic school when I was young.
HW: You ready, Nate?
NT: *from the bathroom* No. I don't know how to put this on.
HW: Shit. Matt, take Ash into the corner by the far bed and help him with his robes. I'll help Nate with his.
MT: Got it. Ash, let's get you changed.
*They go to the corner indicated and Ashley puts the robes on with little fuss. Meanwhile, in the bathroom...*
HW: Erm... I don't want to sound like a pervert, but I have to go down there to get this part on right.
NT: Why do you have to do that?
HW: Because that's the way this kind of dress robe is worn. You wouldn't remember, last time you wore a dress robe was for your Quidditch team photo for the Rottington U-9s.
NT: oh, OK. Just be gentle.
*There's no other fuss about getting ready.*

Elejamian Singles Qualify - 22nd January 2015
Yesterday saw all of Elejamie's singles players advance to the next round. Although all of their matches saw a victory, it was 11th seed Ethan Stokes' victory over Qocaekian Jing Hong Yang in their Group 11 match that was the most noteworthy. There were some concerns about Stokes, who was having a bad case of food poisoning during the match - and, indeed, vomited in the middle of the fifth game of the first set. But he put those fears aside as he beat his opponent 6-4, 6-1. In the other Group 11 match, Waterandearthstanian Lea Te Thokulo lost 3-6, 4-6 to eventual runner up Emma Rehnquistianson.

However, it got worse for Juan Aldia and Alan Bukowski, who finished last in their group without a win. It was a 3-6, 0-6 loss to eventual group winners Memuk Te Kerralu and Fano Koa that sealed their fate. The duo were unavailable for comment after the match. Meanwhile, eventual runners up Jinny Frank and Lissa Crouch beat Tyler Nickels and Freddy Mercury to secure their spot into the next round.

Meanwhile, Javier Pasante overcame his loss yesterday by beating Marie Hynmington 6-3, 6-1 to qualify; Laura Meyer topped the group by defeating Ndakene Zachary Smith 7-5, 6-1; and Christian Lawrence continued his winning streak by beating Waterandearthstan's Hermann Te Herre 6-1, 7-5.

Comments:

Anonymous: Pasante qualified? Is that a typo or did this really happen?

SDoyle352: This looks interesting

Walamzian Post
Walamzia vs Britonisea Matchups Highlight Singles Draw

The Antillia Masters knockout draw has been made. Here are the Walamzian matches in the draw:
Singles Draw - Antillia Masters

Section 1
Nate Tomlinson vs (Q) Master Larry (BRI)
(16) Peter P Larry (BRI) vs (LL) TBD (Hunter Washburn is in contention for this spot.)

Section 2
(12) John Galt (TAI) vs Edgar Waltrip

Section 3
No Walamzians are in this section.

Section 4
Elizabeth Quehall (BRI) vs Ashley Tyler

Doubles Draw - Antillia Masters

Top Half
(5) Coosal Darlcheri/Gyrachor Rentos (CEN) vs Rob Carlin/Jeff Smith

Bottom Half
No Walamzian teams are in this half.

All in all, Walamzians will get to know Britonisea very well throughout this first round of the tournament as 2 out of 3 (3 out of 4, should Washburn win the Lucky Loser spot.) singles matches are against Britonisea players. The 6 remaining Walamzians have been moved into the Presidential Suite of the Dutch Lion Hotel to make room for more Walamzians to stay at the hotel. TRhat suite is the penthouse suite, and includes a private rooftop tennis court along with everything they will need to prepare. We wish both nations the best of luck in this round. To better display a sense of fairness, the Dutch Lion is formally inviting the Britonisea players to use the courts located in the outside space belonging to the hotel, along with all the TVs placed there to prepare.

This is the article from the Walamzian Prophet.

Nate Handed Plum Draw

In the Antillia Tennis Masters, our wizard Nate Tomlinson was handed an easy draw against "Master" Larry, a player from the nation of Britonisea. Reports from our Muggle sport insider Neil Claymage suggests that Larry is very nervous ahead of his match, but that he hopes he can defeat our young prodigy. Please Apparate to Antillia, Costa de Ouro by tomorrow, so we all can go to center court to cheer on Nate in this easy match.

(IC Note: Nate gives this no credence. He has just started to read the Prophet, but he knows that they know nothing about tennis, and that they are just bigging him up to be the greatest thing since sliced bread.)

Main Draw Reveal, Confusion Arise
Antillia, Costa de Ouro

Before the Main Draw Schedule was released by Antillia Masters Authority, some speculation arise that more Pemecutanian Players have advance to the main round. But unfortunately there is a confusion among the Pemecutanian Media about the Qualification Result.

With the release of Main Draw Schedule, it is clear that only 2 Pemecutanian Singles and 1 Double that advance to the Main Draw. And although there are another 3 Single Players who in the Lucky Loser Table but they didn't get pick up for the Lucky Loser Spot in the Main Round. There are Kadek Adi Wiranatha, Ngurah Putu Muliawan and double, Komang Antari/Kadek Andreawati who will be competing in the Main Round of Antillia Masters.

"Although there is a confusion but we still very happy with the result. It is more than what we have in the main round of Paradise City Open," said Putu Agung Yudha Astana, Chief of Pemecutan Tennis Federation.

In First Round of Antillia Masters Single Competition, Ngurah Putra Muliawan will be facing 13th seeded, Lance Mance of Britonisea. While Kadek Adi Wiranatha will be played against a fellow qualifier from Gloriax, Ione Denzil. In Double Competition, Komang Antari/Kadek Andreawati will meet host player, Dusan Ivanovic/Zoran Jovanovic in their First Round match.

O Hotel de São Jose
Antillia, Costa de Ouro
Wednesday evening

Kelly Cicero, Maggie Cho and Carmen Doyle are in Cho and Doyle’s room. Cho was showing off some outfits. Cicero and her doubles partner, Bryce Lord, had just gotten back from the Black Cliffs near Conceicão, on the island’s southern shore. She was wearing a diamond ring.

“So, Bryce finally proposed,” Doyle says.

“It was perfect, well, except for one thing.”

“What was that,” Maggie Cho asks.

“Well, Bryce proposed to me, then Russ Knox proposed to Lupe…”

Maggie and Carmen knew what was coming next.

“Which left Louis and Kaz. We don’t know what their relationship is like. It was just strange.”

“Louis Rich being tied up to an odd bird like Yelena Kazakova,” Cho chimes in. “That would be strange. Does she even like men?”

Both Cicero and Doyle knew about Maggie Cho’s dislike toward Kazakova. Cicero changes the subject.

“Is Esperanza still playing in the special playoff?”

“She’s playing the second game right now,” Maggie Cho says. “Her girlfriends, Britt Mack and Erin are helping her out. You think we should go out and see how she’s doing?”

“Yes,” Cicero and Doyle both said.

“Okay, but before we go…”

Maggie Cho pulls out a skimpy red and black tennis outfit.

“There’s not much to it,” Kelly says.

“Are you sure you want to wear that tomorrow,” Doyle asks.

“I’m wearing it,” Maggie Cho says. “It’ll keep my opponent’s mind distracted from his game.”

“You can try it and see if it works,” Cicero says. “But you don’t get seeded #6 by being distracted by hunchigas.”

The girls laugh, remembering the insult that Paul Quiront yelled at Kay Jackson after he lost his match to her.

“But sometimes, a pretty woman will make a guy that much more determined to win,” Cicero says. “Women don’t like losers.”

“I have other reasons for wearing this outfit.”

“Please, Margarita, enlighten us.”

“Once people around the tennis Center hear about the scantily clad cutie on Court 4, guys from all over will come running. The crowd will be on MY side.”

“Against Amancio Raimundo Belo?” Cicero shakes her head. “You think the home crowd will turn against him because you show them some skin?"

“What’s the other reason?” Carmen Doyle and Kelly Cicero both await an answer.

“I don’t like wearing too many clothes on a hot day.”

“What about the tournament officials,” Doyle asks. “Don’t they have some sort of dress code?”

“That’s why I’m wearing the speedo under the skirt.”

“So, you want to show them just enough.” Kelly Cicero nods. “And if tournament officials come?”

“Why, I had no idea,” Maggie Cho says in a faux-oriental accent. “I didn’t mean it. It won’t happen again. Cross my heart.”

Meanwhile, Esperanza Cho is in the middle of her second match in 12 hours. She and her opponent both look as if they want this match to be over. Erin Trent and Britt Mack sit and watch the match.

“So, how’s she doing,” Mack asks.

“Win or lose, she’s earned my respect,” Erin Trent. “If it was me, I’d tell them where they can put their special playoff, but so far, Esperanza’s kept on trucking.”

“And tomorrow?”

“We haven’t planned than far ahead.”

Before the match, both players had agreed to schedule their bathroom breaks after about the fourth and eighth game of each set. The fourth game of the second set just concluded. Britt Mack and Erin Trent went to join Esperanza Cho, who needed a few kind words.

Cho was drinking a sports drink. She was alone in the locker room when Trent and Mack came in.

“Hey, Hunchiga,” Trent says to Cho. “How you holdin’ up?

“When in Rome,” Cho says. “Act like you know.”

A black rider on a black mare, riding through the night
Clip-clop!
Clip-clop!
Riding through the night

The horse stopped
In front of the old motel
Yes, the old motel
And it neighed and whinnied in the night

A gunshot was heard
The scream of the murdered
In the old motel
Yes, in the old motel
In the middle of the night

Was he murdered for gold?
Was he murdered for money?
Or was he murdered for the sweet taste of revenge?
Only the black rider
On the black mare
Knows the answer

And he rode away
Into the trees
After the murder
At the old motel
Yes, the old motel
In the middle of the night

all my people are glued
in front of the television
again i know they are
always glued around the
television so why do you
remark on this today you ask
me well today i want to
talk about their time
wasting habits well you do
that pretty much every day
some animals ask me
well i guess that is true
but i guess my pet peeve
no pun intended
is my people wasting time
a moment only comes once
and they do not always
take the right moment
well arent you a hypocrite
some others ask me
you just sleep all day
well that might be true too
but humans and cats are built
for different things
cats are built to sleep
and to eat and to play
humans on the other hand
have work to do
but i never see them working
only playing or wasting time
i wonder how they
are going to live their
lives sitting around like this

From Pemecutanian side, Ngurah Putra Muliawan success to advance to the Second Round after defeated 13th seeded, Lance Mance of Britonisea it a straight set. It was a very suprise result coming from Muliawan who is not predicted to passed. Muliawan dictated the match in the first round and able to difficult Lance Mance in several game to eventually won the first set by 6-3. Antillia Tennis Club
Antillia, Costa de Ouro
Court #2
Friday morning
10:30

The start of the singles competition began yesterday morning. Yesterday, Andromedan players won four of their six Opening Round Games. Earlier that morning, Esperanza Cho won the special playoff, making her the 7th Andromedan to make the singles draw.

This morning, there are a few singles games left. Doubles competition will begin at noon. Esperanza Cho is playing #16 seed Peter Larry of Britonisea. Cho won the first set after breaking Larry in the final game, avoiding a tie-break. Larry and Cho are on serve.

Britt Mack, who was upset in her opening match, sits in the stands with Erin Trent, who was eliminated during qualification. Riley Escobar is also in the stands, sitting next to Mack. Escobar will play the winner of this match in the second round. The three have a conversation.

“Tough loss there, Britt,” Trent says.

“I should have prepared more,” Mack says. “You know, I think that I did better when I had to go through qualification. It’s more intense than just practice.”

“You think we should adapt that sort of schedule,” Escobar asks.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean even if we don’t have qualifying matches, we do scrimmages at the same time. We push ourselves as far as Kay has, or Esperanza…”

“Kay, maybe. Not Esperanza,” Mack says quickly. “How did you manage to get her this far?”

“That’s just it,” Trent says. “I helped her some, but she played those matches. Three in 36 hours.”

“You know, I always thought she could be the better Cho,” Riley says, comparing young Esperanza to her older cousin, Maggie.

----------

The set is tied at 4 games apiece. John Galt, Kay Jackson and Carmen Doyle walk in. Jackson and Doyle talk about the match between Maggie Cho and Amancio Belo yesterday afternoon.

“We told her wearing that outfit wasn’t going to work,” Doyle says. “You could look in the stands and see more revealing stuff than what she had on.”

“It didn’t work for HER,” Jackson says. “Now, if I wore that kind of outfit tomorrow against Johnny here…”

“Are you trying to get me in trouble again? The moment I say something, one of you’ll tell Si Yuan. You know she’s the jealous type.”

“But in all seriousness, Maggie put up a good match,” Jackson admits. “She just happened to be paired up against the home town favourite.”

“The same one I have to play tomorrow,” Doyle says. “And I don’t think he’ll be intimidated by the runner-up in Paradise City.

“Hey, Cho took him three sets,” Galt says. “Aren’t you better than she is?”

Doyle sits and ponders Galt’s question.

----------

Both players held serve. Esperanza Cho is up 6-5. Larry is up 30-15 in this service game and is about to send the second set into a tie-break. Trent and Riley Escobar talk for a second.

“So, what do you think?”

“I think I’m going to have a match on my hands if your girl wins.”

“She’s coming along,”

“You ever think of being a tennis coach?”

Trent is silent.

“I mean, you’ve done wonders for Esperanza.”

“I helped her some, but I want to make the Royal Nikolian. Maybe when I retire as a player, I’ll become a coach.”

“It’s just a thought.”

The match goes to a tie-break.

“If Esperanza wins this, could you go eas…”

“Not a chance!”

Whitewash not all we hoped for

Our position in the International Tennis world is at a crossroads. Let's face it, Electrum tennis wasn't that good from the very beginning - especially on the singles - Sonya Gredello was leading the charge at one point, having a record high of being fortieth, but several bad luck draws meant she would never get more points, and her ranking would slip. We would rely on new hopes such as Malcolm Press, and now, Maya Cassington, who is now ranked 16th in the world. But it's still undeniable. The stranglehold the Cenians, Costa de Ourans, and Estopians had on the ATP rankings. Admittedly, this paradigm is now being shifted with The Andromeda Islands with their new hopes of John Galt, Britt Mack and Carmen Doyle. We are not part of that shift. In the short space of time where they've been up, they've managed to already get more players in the top fifty than we did (even though we had a longer amount of time).

Now, the future of Electrum tennis stands on a precipice. It's either time to turn back, and focus on our doubles, or really do something to redress the issue. For example, in the first round of the Antillian draw, there were six Electrumites, four of which would be eliminated. Conversely, the Andromedans had five of seven advance. Whatever training they do over there, we must somehow take the essence of and repeat. They have circuit tennis competitions, and with that extra experience, blew the tennis world by storm when they first entered, just a few months ago. Their players are clearly at a higher level than ours, and it seems like an unwritten rule by the God of Margaret, all that she is holy, that we must always lose whenever we face their players.

That's not to say that our players aren't good. They are world class players, and we had three quarters of our qualifying field advance, that is to say, that three quarters of our entered field were group winners. I must also note that qualification is now much, much more harder than before. With the increased participation of some nations which we've never seen before, increases the potential of upsets, whilst decreasing the opportunity to qualify. In the Electrum Slam, there were less players competing in the qualification, with consequently less players going into the main draw. Now, almost half of the field is comprised of qualifiers - truly unprecedented.

The world of tennis is changing, and we must forge a new future. The Electrum Lawn Tennis Association, which is one of the oldest continuing tennis associations needs to change. We need to support our singles players more. We need to do something - anything - to prevent our slipping down the rankings. New talent Carmichael Brown has been performing excellently, as well as all those who qualified. As for those that didn't, there should be less rewards for them. Otherwise, we may just be known for our doubles tennis only

"So, what's going on, Ard? You having fun in here in Antillia?" Ardil Navsal's coach, Denver Coir, asked.

"Well, Denver, you know I always have fun here. The beaches, the breeze, the historic architecture, it's a great place to be. But I'm a little bit worried about the draw here. Too many possibilities for upsets."

"What do you mean by that, Ard?

"Well, for one, Malcolm Courtney beat Ciache."

"I don't think that's an upset! Courtney's been around for a while. He should have some good tennis."

"Courtney always seems to get so lucky. It seems like he never practices, the Gloriax media doesn't give a hoot about him, and he always wins on challenges. I remember that one match where his shot just touched the line by a millimeter. Could he get any luckier? It just seems to me that he gets a lot of reward for practically no effort."

"Now that you say that..."

"There's also the new Andromedan crop. They keep winning. Remember when I lost in Hamilton?"

"Not in Paradise City, Ard. Kika Dovan and Darlcheri and Rentos won the titles, both defeating Andromedan players."

"Question, Denver?"

"Yeah, Ard?"

"How long can I stay at the top? I think it's inevitable that one of them will be at the top, probably before the end of the year."

"You can stay at the top as long as you have faith in yourself. The way you keep talking about yourself, you won't get past the first round any more."

"Who says that?"

"I do. I'm your coach, and part of my job is to keep you in good spirits. So maybe if you stopped complaining, you'd do better."

"But what about the rest of the Cenians?"

"Well, everyone won yesterday except Ciache. Doubles are up today."

"Speaking of doubles, I kind of have a crush on Elia Xal. She's so pretty, and good at tennis too."

"Aw. Don't stare at her too much; you might lose concentration."

"Denver, do you think she has a crush on me?"

"I wouldn't know, but the Andromedans are all over each other. I heard a couple of them proposed, near Conceicao. At the Black Cliffs."

"What an irony - Conceicao means conception."

"Well, maybe we can go on a date sometime. How about when we both win this tournament?"

"Elia and Fia will probably have to go up against Sonya and Rosa. They've lost their last couple of meetings to them."

"I have faith in them."

"But do you have faith in yourself?"

"Stop that, Denver. If you're going to try and keep my spirits up, you can't make me doubt myself."

"No, but I can make you work better."

Ardil rolled his eyes. "I know, Denver. Now, where were we, Elia Xal? A date?"

"How about the gardens here in Antillia, and then a nice restaurant?"

"Only if I have the courage to actually ask her out."

"I think you can. If you can win a Grand Slam, I think you can win a lady's heart."

"Well, then I shall."

Ardil left the hotel room to go find Elia Xal.

Denver could not help but giggle a little.

Letter to the Editor
dear mr editor
my name is tabatha
and i am a cat
i am not an ordinary
cat as you can see
because i am writing
this letter to you
i am writing this
letter to you because
i want to tell
you my opinion on
an important issue
politics
i think people
should stop worrying
about it so much and
maybe take it into their
own hands but
also i think that people
have no right to
complain about government
when they dont even
bother to vote
i think politics is too stressful
for cats so that
is why i think we
dont have it at all
we just live for ourselves
but humans are different
i guess
anyway those are my two cents
if you dont want them
you can return them

Manga, a man who works for BVC and likes tennis, walks in to the head office and speaks to the head man.

"Why are you in my office?" asked the head man.

"I've got to tell you something."

"What could it be, boy?"

"Well, did you know tennis is going on, right?"

"No, there is no tennis going on, anywhere in the country nor the world."

"Well actually there is. You know the Astyrian Series."

"Boy, what do you mean? That finished ages ago, didn't you know?"

"No sure. Here look at my mobile device. It says that Ricardo Toli, who is still in the game, won 7-6, 6-3 against Gerdur Ivath (HAL). "

"No, you talking rubbish. Give me your nokia brick."

"It's not a nokia brick, it's a nokia lumia 52-"

"Yeah, Yeah. My gosh! Lance and Peter both lost their matches. In fact, everyone but Ricardo lost their matches."

"It is all your fault, sir."

"Why do you blame me?"

"Because since your Olympic fiasco you got our country banned from the Games, and plus, you totally forgot about the most important sport in the world...ten-"

"Yeah Yeah. It will start to broadcast tomorrow. Hopefully some Britonish support can spur the man on. To win"

"Yes. He needs it sir."

"You know what Manga?"

"What sir?"

"You're my new vice president."

"RICHARD YOUR FIRED"

Richard cries down the stairs however he drops and he bleeds.

"Ok." said Manga.

Tomlinson Eliminated, Tyler Advances to Round of 16

Nate Tomlinson and Ashley Tyler competed yesterday in the Antillia Masters Round of 32. Both were drawn against top 15 opposition. Tomlinson lost to the #1 seed 6-2, 6-2, in a highly spirited match. Tomlinson, however, had some complaints about the lack of turnout of Walamzians to watch his match, as most were watching the Rob Carlin and Jeff Smith doubles match, which they lost. He confessed to Jake Peters that he felt that the crowd were against him the whole way despite him being a massive underdog. Reports from our wizard brethren indicate that several wizarding dignitaries were in attendance for the Round of 64 match, but that most of them had to leave to prepare for Quidditch season or to attend to wizarding matters. President Foyle and Minister Lupin, Foyle's counterpart in the wizard population of Walamzia, released a joint statement for the first time since September 11, 2001 on Tomlinson's run in the tournament:

We are deeply saddened to hear that Nate Tomlinson's run in the Antillia Masters is over due to an unfavorable draw in the Round of 32 against the top-ranked player in the tournament. Muggles and wizards alike were glued to his every point, cheering and commiserating at every conclusion of the point. We can say for certain that approximately 7,000 Walamzians were there to see his Round of 32 match live in Antillia, however, they were drowned out by the near 40,000 cheering for the #1 seed. We feel that we should apologize to all Walamzians, Muggle and wizard, for not allowing multiple methods of reliable transportation for all of you to go watch, as we saw some tremendously empty seats in that stadium, which would have helped Nate win by giving him more confidence at the court.

However, if Nate could hear the noise made in Walamzian homes and public watch parties, he would feel much better about the lack of noise at the stadium. There were a total of 30 official watch parties, all of which were coattended by the Muggle and wizard populations. We are so proud of our people, and we see this as evience that the International Statute of Secrecy is outdated and, frankly, wrong. This is the reason that we do not enforce that statute here. Without the lack of enforcement, Nate Tomlinson would be living with someone he's barely related to, being forced to attend magical school and playing Quidditch... maybe the last part would be voluntary anyway. Nevertheless, we wish to make these kind of statements more often, and not with regard to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Thank you, and may God bless all of you, and we sincerely hope that all of you cheer just as loudly for Ashley Tyler in the next round as you did for Nate.

Ashley Tyler's match will be broadcast live on WalSport. A replay will be shown at 8PM on WalTV.

Andromeda News Network
Good Morning Andromeda
Antillia Masters Coverage
Sunday morning

Because of the recent successes of Andromedan tennis players, the last few months, Good Morning Andromeda has devoted the last half hour of their Sunday program to the Antillian Open and the Andromedan tennis program in general. That part of the program began with updates on matches from the previous two days. Dave Bishop and Lucius Webb report.”

“Doubles play began at the Antillia Masters on Friday with the #7 ranked team of Yelena Kazakova and Louis Rich played the Soares Sisters of Costa del Ouro. How’d they look Lucius?”

“Although Eva and Vera Soares played in front of a home crowd, it didn’t seem like it yesterday. Kaz and Rich made the semis of the Cenial Open. If they play like they did today, they should at least make it that far here.”

“Kaz and Rich won 6-2, 6-1. The next match involved Ray Thomas and Hayley Van Pelt, the finalists in Paradise City.”

“They breezed through qualification. They could have won in two sets against the Rianor team from Ceni, but they faltered in the tie-break.”

“They did win, 6-0 in the third. At the same time Thomas and Van Pelt were playing, Russ Knox and Lupe Gomez were playing the team of Koala and Lesalu.”

“The most interesting thing about this match is that Gomez was wearing a diamond ring on her hand when she and Russ arrived at the court yesterday afternoon. It appears that wedding bells are in Knox and Gomez’s future.”

“They won 6-0, 6-2. The final doubles match for Andromeda involved Bryce Lord and Kelly Cicero playing Samuel Gates and Greg Meares from Electrum.

“Lord and Cicero appeared rusty at the start. They hadn’t played since making the finals in Hamilton a month ago, but they found their footing in the second.”

“They won 6-4 in the third. So we look at the draw and all four doubles teams have made the Round of 16.”

The tournament doubles draw appears on the screen.

“Lord and Cicero will have the toughest time this afternoon. They face off against Elia Xal and Fia Xal, the #2 team in the world on Monday.

“Let’s go to the singles draw, where Andromedans were guaranteed to win two and lose two as they faced each other yesterday. The first match was between Andromedan veteran John Galt and Andromedan newcomer Kay Jackson.”

“This was definitely a case of old versus new Dave. Kay Jackson has a feel for the court that is well beyond her nearly 18 years. And it showed against the wily veteran. Jackson won the first set 6-4.”

“But John Galt was able to counter, winning 6-4 in the second and 7-5 in the deciding set. We talked with John Galt after the match.”

----------

“I’m sure it’s cliché to say that the level of tennis is so much better now, but it is, even among our own ranks. Believe me, if the John Galt from 10 years ago had played the opponent I played today, he would have lost badly.

“You’ll likely play #5 Ricardo Toli tomorrow. What do you think about that?”

“I don’t know. He still has to play his match. Maybe you should ask Toli or his opponent what they think about playing John Galt.”

----------

“The late match yesterday saw Carmen Doyle, who finished second in Paradise City, play local favourite #6 Amancio Raimundo Belo.”

“Belo must hate the Andromeda Islands right now. He won 6-4 in the third against Maggie Cho and he won yesterday 8-6 in the third over Carmen Doyle.”

“Finally, we come to the Andromedan version of The Little Engine that could. When we thought about Esperanza Cho’s match, we were tempted to portray it as a matchup between David and Goliath. The only problem was that the Goliath was fellow Andromedan Riley Escobar.”

“Cho was the last person to qualify for the main draw, but the process seems to have made her into a much better player. She made quick work of her compatriot Riley Escobar 6-4, 6-1.

The tournament singles draw appears on the screen.

“Now, only two remain in the singles draw: The 32-year-old veteran John Galt and the 15-year-old youngster. Cho’s next match is against #1 ranked Elaine Foyner of Ceni.”

“Now, we start comparing players to David and Goliath. You have one of the most accomplished players on tour, who’s won four of her last five tournaments against someone who had to play six qualifying games just to make the field of 64. The simple fact that Esperanza Cho is even in the Round of 16 is just amazing, Dave.”

“Let’s not count her out just yet. For Lucius Webb, this is Dave Bishop with the Andromeda News Network.”

"Well, you won yesterday, Ard," Denver Coir said. "And so did the Xals."

"But Sonya and Rosa also won. They have an easy qualifier next."

"As opposed to a hard qualifier?"

"Yeah, like the Cassingtons."

"SIsters versus sisters, aye?"

"Yeah."

Ardil Navsal laughs. "I could use some sleep. Dating is stressful work."

"Oh, come on. You know it isn't."

"Yes it is. You know I don't have much social skills."

"I won't let your volley get away on that one. All you did with Elia yesterday was drink and walk around the gardens. That doesn't sound stressful."

"Nice get, Denver, but I have to worry about so many things. How I look, what I do, how I eat... and then there's my match tomorrow. Ashley Tyler, of Walamzia."

"She thoroughly eviscerated Tamsin Strickland, but then again, you did it to Malcolm Press."

"You know, you've gotten only qualifiers so far."

"Yeah. Huh. What about that?"

"Well, you'll have a seed next. Either Andre Delgado or Botack. Both won in three yesterday."

"I'm kind of worried about Ashley Tyler. She has a couple of magical friends..."

"How's that?"

"Well, some Ministry of Magic or something made a press release yesterday. They were disappointed that Nate Tomlinson, one of their players, lost to Elaine the other day. They might do some foul play against me or Elaine in revenge."

"If you lose, you can always blame it on them."

"Come on, Denver, you were talking about confidence yesterday. Talking about me losing doesn't do much for that."

"True."

"Well, I am tired."

"Can I let you go to bed?"

"Yes."

what a wonderful feeling
when your people
pour those little droplets
of food into my metal bowl
and when they shake
my treat bag
but it is not
a wonderful feeling
when they shake a
bag of chips
or some snacks
that are not my treats
it is just plain disappointing
but sometimes in life
you have to deal with
disappointments
even though i am a cat
i am no different
