True North Twenty20- 2023 Season

Cricket is not one of the most popular sports in Quebec, though at times it's drawn huge crowds in attendance- that being on either domestic or international competitions when they'd be paid some attention. Though it is not the most popular, nor the most played, people nonetheless know the rules and pay when interested.

With this in light, the Cricket Quebec has decided to create a new T20 league, after years of state level competitions which kept the national exposure mostly limited. With the parity of teams on the league, it was a very interesting one to say the least as the Yugong-Sussex, a club consisting of mostly northern Gaspecian players and university graduates (UdG and Hampden with some of the best collegiate programs for last decade or so), won the trophy over Amos. This was then followed by favourites Amos and Middlesex, whose backings and massive fanbase had them placed as so from beginning. Also the surprisers were Kingston Tigers, a team from the area that's barely a cricket market but was able to take advantage of its highly-trained Tamil players, and an aging Sherbrooke Raiders squad. The likewise were not said for Dongnae, however, as the Nova Scotians have failed to deliver on games that mattered- most notably on round 18 against Sherbrooke and 21 against Alma- and were given the season record of 9-13.

Pld W D L PF PA PD Pts
1 Yugong-Sussex 22 14 1 7 3278 3002 +276 29
2 Amos 22 14 0 8 3337 3076 +261 28

3 Middlesex 22 14 0 8 3070 2848 +222 28
4 Montreal Koreana 22 12 0 10 3095 3037 +58 24
5 Sherbrooke Raiders 22 12 0 10 3137 3101 +36 24
6 Kingston Tigers 22 12 0 10 3255 3336 −81 24

12 Hangyeong Paladins 22 5 0 17 3190 3350 −160 10

Quarterfinals
Middlesex 139/7 (19.1 overs)
Kingston Tigers 138/5 (20 overs)

Montreal Koreana 137/7 (20 overs)
Sherbrooke Raiders 109/7 (20 overs)

Semifinals
Yugong-Sussex 163/7 (20 overs)
Montreal Koreana 133/7 (20 overs)

Amos 133/7 (20 overs)
Middlesex 171/8 (20 overs)

Final
Yugong-Sussex 158/4 (20 overs)
Middlesex 160/7 (19.5 overs)

Yugong-Sussex may've had the most surprising story, but it was the more experienced Middlesex squad who prevailed as they pulled through with a spectacular last run from Franklin Rivard-Jones, who overcame a leg injury from car accident just 6 months earlier to lead the squad to victory, in front of a sellout crowd at 8,000-seater Sussex Cricket Ground, Yugong City, Gaspecie.

OOC: So I forgot to post this here when I first put it on International Domestic Hockey Newswire almost a year back. Anyway, expect this as one step in loading next 4-5 QHL results. League results until 2022 will be mostly just scores, Prenneau-Cup winning team description and awards. Will be fully RP'd from 2022-2023 season and onwards.

When Halifax Tempest was back in the Prenneau Cup Final after a long series against PLI, many have wondered if this was going to be the one for the Tempest to win it all, or fall short of it like they've done so in 6 appearances before them. They had a relatively mediocre regular season, and with aging core that only received Nepharim Lilith Beresford as further enforcement, the journey has been rough in the first place. Nobody scored more than 80 points and the squads had to be more spread and even in terms of talent, because of depth issues and lack of alternatives for their aging stars.

This was of similar case in playoffs. In all three rounds they were challenged, right at their throats, on the verge of elimination. The teams synched very well but were often undermatched against more dynamic and skilled teams, forcing them to grit their way through it. By the end of Conference finals, the team made it through and in glorious fashion, but seemed quite exhausted after playing 21 full games.

But many, after all the month and half of games, still believed in that Halifax receive its first Prenneau Cup title in its history and were right. They, this time, had overcame challenges through hard work and grit, on top of their usual skills, and had right guys. Guys like Lilith Beresford, Dan Horvat (Centre), Harald Kenins (Right Wing), and William Azriel (Defenceman) came up big in important times, while the existing veterans did their job. Hal Niemes, on the end of his 20-year career in QHL, stayed tall and strong on the end of his 9-year contract with Tempest. The team matched well as well. Not having Attawapiskat or Kingston as opponent helped this, as the Tempest throttled the Armada in 6 games. The series was easy, taking little bit of extra effort and thinking from the team to end it all. By this point they've gone through so much that it was nothing and Armada, though strong and formidable, were just overpowered by it.

It took forever, but Halifax finally did it. After 48 years and 6 failed attempts, Halifax Tempest are the Prenneau Cup Champions.
