Dear Mr Ashford,

Firstly may I say how grateful I am for your letters to me whilst I was in prison and throughout the period of my trial, which thankfully has come to an end, and resulted in my release. May I also say with much sincerity how sorry I am that you yourself have now come under suspicion of tax dodging, something which I know our current government does not look lightly upon, which may go someway to explain why you now find yourself in a prison cell. However, whilst I was released free of charge, I do not think that you will necessarily be so lucky. Anyway, I feel that I, as head coach, must return the favour, and inform you, as chairman of the board and head selector, of the team’s progress at the world championships, whilst you have no access to TV, radio, wi-fi or phone.

Our first Super Eights match took place today, against Barunia. We batted first, and for the first time in a long time both of our openers failed to make a big score, Foster hitting 12 off 10, and Wright 8 off 7. Fedman did manage to get the ball rolling with his 27 off 22, but the middle order failed; Mann, Bright and Green only scoring 28 between them. Fortunately the second half of our innings was saved, as Danny Day managed to farm the strike, and hit a maiden T20I fifty off 45 balls, supported by Dresford’s 9 off 10. Overall we managed to score 137 for 6, which was simply not enough against a good Barunia side on a decent batting pitch. I think some changes need to be made to the batting, and I was thinking specifically of Thomas Mann, who has not made a good impression on the last few games as I would have liked to him to have done.

Anyway, Levesford and Tomlinson set about defending a relatively low total, and did well to begin with, restricting them to 20-3 from the first 4 overs. Levesford struck twice in the first over, and Tomlinson took another. However, a bowling change (Sadie for Levesford) brought immediate results, although not in the way I or Captain Wright would have wanted. Sadie conceded 15 off his first over to let Barunia shoot to 35 for 3 off 5, up with the rate. Green came on for Tomlinson and did his best to stem the flow, conceding 6 off his first over. Sadie improved with his second, giving just 3 singles away, but Green then gave away another 9. That took the score to 53 for 3 off 8, meaning it was anyone’s game. Until Sadie bowled his third. The Barunians bludgeoned 23 off the over, moving along to 76 off 9, well over the required rate. Dresford was brought on to try and slow them down, and he bowled a cracking off break with his first ball to remove the batsman, but still gave away 8 runs. At the halfway stage they were 84 for 4, above the rate, but with a possibility of being bowled out. Sadie was removed from the attack with the hope that he would not have to bowl again, as we would have bowled them out, and Green brought back on. 10 off the over. Dresford again and another 10 off the over. The Barunian then needed just 34 from 8 overs, and with 6 wickets in hand. Green bowled his final over, and kept a tight line, restricting them to just 3. Dresford bowled his third and gave away only 4. 111 for 4 from 14, 27 needed from 6. At that point Levesford was brought back on and bowled a 7 run over, before Dresford bowled his last and gave away just 2 runs, but crucially took a wicket. 120 for 5 from 16, 18 required from 4. Tomlinson returned to the attack and gave away 6 runs, before Levesford bowled his final over and conceded two fours off the first two balls. However, he then took two in two, to reduce them to 134 for 8 from 18, 4 needed from 2. However, Sadie had to bowl one of those two overs, so we needed Tomlinson to take two wickets from his last over. He gave away two singles, before taking his second wicket, meaning that we needed 1 wicket to win, and they 2 runs. However, the new batsman edged his first ball for four, so we lost by one wicket. However, I think we bowled well apart from Sadie, so if I replace him and Mann, we should fare well for the next two games against Apox, who we gave beaten before, and Darmen.
Good luck explaining your way out of those missing 6 million fensters.

Yours Sincerely,

Lucas Jamieson

Dear Mr Ashford,

Whilst your trial continues at an angle that you may not be totally pleased with, I thought I might bring some cheer to your otherwise gloomy day by informing you of our victory over Darmen in the Super Eights stage of the T20 World Championships.

We bowled first, and Levesford took the ball for the first over, although 3 fours off of the first four balls was not what he wanted, and ended up giving away 13 off the first over. Tomlinson opened up at the other end, and bowled a decent line, giving away just 5. Both then bowled another over, Levesford’s going for 6 and Tomlinson’s for 12, including a six. After 4 overs Darmen were 36-0, not a great start for us. In order to try and stem the flow, Wright brought the returning Shelford on, and he duly took the opening wicket with his first ball, although the rest of his over went for 11. Green came on at the other end, and he conceded 15 runs, meaning Darmen were 62-1 from 6 overs, in a position to post a huge score. Shelford and Green bowled another two overs each, and whilst Shelford took his second wicket, the four overs brought a total of 47 runs, meaning at the halfway stage, Darmen were 109-2, looking ominous. Wright made the correct decision to change it up a little, bringing on Dresford to slow down the pace. This brought immediate results, as he took two wickets inside his first four balls, and gave away only 4 runs from his over, meaning Darmen were reduced from 109-2 from 10 to 113-4 from 11. Levesford then returned to the attack, and the onslaught resumed, as 13 runs were sprayed about the ground. Dresford’s second over followed this trend, 16 runs including a four and a six coming from it, although he did nab his third wicket with the last ball. Darmen were now 142-5 from 14, still in with a chance of getting over 200. Levesford then bowled his final over and for once kept it tight, giving away just 5, but crucially taking a wicket as the batsman skied the ball going for a six after 3 consecutive dots.. Dresford’s next over then turned the innings on its head. The first ball went for four, the second for 2, and the third for one. However, the fourth spat out of the rough at the batsman, knocking back his off peg. The new man didn’t fare much better, as a second huge turner caught him off guard, and he could only fend off to the bat/pad man, giving Dresford his five-for. On the hat-trick ball Wright brought all but two of the fielders in, putting pressure on the number 10. Maybe he was expecting another large off spinner, but instead Dresford bowled him the arm ball, which took him by surprise, and took his bails off their perch. That is the first ever hat-trick by a Fenbarric player in international cricket. Darmen had now crumbled to 154-9 from 15 overs. Tomlinson then bowled the new over, and after giving away 8 runs, he took the final wicket with a huge inswinging Yorker that was too good for the tailender.

However. 163 was a big total for us to face, so we needed to be postive from the off. Foster and Wright got us moving, taking the team to 16 off the first two overs. However, both of them soon went, Foster for 19 and Wright for 14, so it was up to Fedman and Bright to rebuild from 36-2. They did this well, hitting a partnership of 44 off 30 balls, taking the States to 80-3 from 9.1 overs by the time Bright was out, just above the required rate. This brought debutant Chris Vorm in. Whilst usually a wicketkeeper, he did well in his first international innings, scoring 23 off 17 balls, including a huge 6 over long on. However, he and Fedman got out in quick succession, leaving us 113-5 from 12.4 overs, still needing 48 runs from 44 balls, but with our last two recognised batsmen at the crease in Green and Day. They played cautiously, and but when they had got to 133-5, Day got out, still 28 runs short of the target. After Dresford came in, Darmen starved Green of the strike, meaning our scoring rate was slowed. Nevertheless, we progressed towards the total. Soon we were 159-6 from 16.2 overs, needing just 4 to win from 22 balls. Suddenly, Dresford went for the big finish, but could only succeed in hitting it straight at wide long off. As the batsmen had crossed over, Green would face the next ball, but he was then trapped in front. We were now still 4 runs away, but with only two wickets in hand. Shelford, the new man, then swiped at the next ball, but edged it along the ground for a single, before Levesford hit another off the last of the over. Just 3 overs left, 2 runs, 2 wickets. However, Shelford then played out a maiden. Levesford survived an lbw shout off the first ball of the 18th, then two nervy dot balls. Finally the winning runs came when he managed to get one along the ground to the extra cover boundary. We are on our way in the Super Eights.

I hope your sentence isn’t too lengthy.

Yours Sincerely,

Lucas Jamieson

Dear Mr Ashford,

May I begin by saying how sorry I am at the result of your impending sentence for tax fraud. I know that you have not yet been found guilty, but with all the evidence that has built up, I don’t think there is much doubt. I can only say that I hope the judge feels some sympathy, and doesn’t give you the maximum eight years. I fear that I may soon be sending these letters to a new chairman, perhaps of somewhat more repute and integrity.

Our match against Apox today resulted in defeat, although out batsmen, batting first, performed well. Foster got out early, but Wright and Fedman put on a brilliant partnership of 59 from 35 balls, leaving us 83-2 off 7.2 overs. Wright continued to bat well after Fedman got out, eventually reaching 67 off 35. Bright and Vorm then put on another good partnership, this time 46 off 30, meaning that with 4 overs to go we were 166 for 4. Although Green got out soon after Bright, Vorm managed to produce some big hits, including 3 sixes, which took is to 192-5 at the end of the innings. A big total we felt. Although not quite big enough, as it turns out. As has been the case for most of the tournament, Levesford and Tomlinson opened the bowling, although Levesford was somewhat expensive, eventually going for 41 off his 4 overs, without taking any wickets. Tomlinson on the other hand, although not necessarily economical, conceded the least amount of runs of all the overs, and also took two wickets, in the end finishing with figures of 2-29. Green was easily the most expensive bowler, giving away 51 runs from his 4 overs, without any wickets to show for it, and I think some questions need to be raised as to whether he plays the next three games. Shelford did give away a few runs, but he did grab a wicket, and Dresford once again managed to bamboozle a few batsmen, eventually finishing with 2-34. Apox did manage to chase down our total, but only with 4 balls to spare, and whilst they are unbeaten in the group, I think we can have confidence going into the final three games that we can win at least two, which should put us into the semi finals, barring any mathematical bizarreness.

Have a nice time in jail.

Yours Sincerely,

Lucas Jamieson

Dear Mr Ashford,

To start off, I am absolutely incredulous at how you managed to avoid a finding of guilty in your trial for fraud. I followed proceedings closely, and as far as I am aware, you were definitely guilty. May I respectfully remind you that bribery is strictly illegal. Anyway, I still feel compelled to inform you of the proceedings of our match today, as I have a duty to the committee.

We bowled first against Barunia, Levesford and Tomlinson again opening the bowling. It was a pretty even start, Barunia getting to 24 off the first 4 overs, before the returning Lukano came on with Shelford, and both bowled 3 overs each, going for a total of 56, and meaning Barunia were 80 off the first 10. However, Shelford’s final over only yielded 3 runs, and then Lukano bowled his. After a three off the first ball, he bowled a beautiful inswinging yorker that removed middle and leg stumps, and sent the bails flying. Then after 3 more quick straight balls that left the batsman guessing, he bowled a slower one which again clattered into the stumps. He swung the innings back our way, leaving Barunia 82-2 off 12. Dresford then began his spell, and continued Lukano’s good work, giving away just 4 runs, and then off the final ball of his first over getting one to spit out of the rough and take the outside edge through to Day. Tomlinson then returned, and again gave away only 5, and nabbing a wicket when the batsman skied the ball straight to mid on. Barunia had scored just 15 runs off the last 4 overs for the loss of 4 wickets, meaning they slid from 80-0 off 10 to 95-4 off 14. However, things started to go down hill from there Dresford’s second over leaking 13 runs, and Tomlinson’s final one giving away 11. With 4 overs to go they were 119-4, in with a chance of a fairly big total. They looked like they were going to get it to, as Dresford gave away another 11, before the returning Levesford leaked 14. 144-4 from 18. However, Dresford bowled a fantastic final over, restricting the batsmen to just 2, before some brilliant death bowling from Levesford meant some swings and misses yielded just 5 runs for Barunia in the final over. The final score was 151-4.

Foster then got out chase off to a brilliant start, smashing 20 off the first over. Wright was a little more conservative, but after 5 overs we were 57-0. The opening partnership totalled 67 before Wright got out lbw, but Foster was out soon after, having smashed 56 off just 24 balls, a strike rate of 233.33. Bright then played an anchor role for Fedman, who also quickly reached his 50, although Bright scored at less than a run a ball. They then both got out agonisingly close to the finish, meaning that Lukano and Vorm had to finish the job. We managed the total relatively comfortably, in 17.4 overs, thanks to Foster’s brilliance, and I can’t think of anything that detracts from this team performance.

Anyway, I hope that you are found out, and seen for what you are.

Yours Sincerely,

Lucas Jamieson

Dear Mr Jamieson,

May I begin by reminding you that I am in effect your boss, and that your language used in your last letter to me was totally unacceptable. I also took deep offence at the way you so scandalously accused me of bribery and fraud, and this can only be reflected in the harshest possible terms. The committee has therefore decided to discipline you, and ban you from attending the next two matches that we play, whether they be in this tournament or not. Anyway, I have sent this letter to mainly deal with some problems that I discovered with the team in our last match against Darmen, despite the fact it was a victory.

As we bowled first in the match, I will start with that. Levesford’s first over was not aggressive enough, and I feel that they were let off the hook early, and not put under much pressure, which is why they reached 35 off the first 5 overs without losing any wickets. I did however feel that both Levesford and Tomlinson did bowl accurately enough to stop them scoring too quickly, although neither of them took any wickets, and one must therefore ask oneself if this will be good enough for when we play Apox to decide whether or not we qualify for the semi finals, and any potential games after that. I feel we can sacrifice a few early runs in order to try and take wickets, which over the course of an entire innings will surely mean that our opponents will post lower scores. Our other two pace bowlers, Shelford and Lukano were slightly less economical, and this needs to improve if they are to bowl the middle overs, where it is vital to restrict the batsman, so that they do not get into their stride, and be in a better position to hit out at the end of the innings. However, both these bowlers did take a wicket, so I am fairly pleased with the way they bowled. My biggest bowling concern is Dresford, who throughout the Championships has been, along with Tomlinson, our best bowler, so I was quite worried to see him bowling so poorly. He barely ever goes at seven an over, and he often dropped too short, something he doesn’t often do. The fact that he also went wicketless means that there is a case for him to be dropped for the Apox match. Overall however, I felt our bowling performance was mediocre at best, and although they didn’t give away too many runs, the bowlers lacked imagination, and their figures are aided by the fact that the Darmeni batsmen did not seem to be able to hit boundaries at crucial times. 132-2 is ok, but not good.

Our batting also has areas which I have identified as needing improvement. Foster has been inconsistent throughout the tournament, and his score of 19 off 16 does not reflect brilliantly on him. He needs a few big scores in the next few matches to be sure of retaining his place. The same could be said of Wright, who has captained well, but whose batting has often lacked flair, and occasionally inspiration for the rest of the team. One bright spot in the line up has been Fedman, who has consistently hit big scores, although just 20 in this match was not an outstanding performance. Our middle order has changed almost by the match throughout the tournament, and we have struggled to find anyone who can regularly score quickly and heavily. The current three of Bright, Vorm and Lukano, as well as the ‘keeper, Day, have done all right in the few matches that they have been together, but nothing special has happened as of yet. I appreciate that we were not chasing a huge total in this match, but I still feel that a statistic of only 14 boundaries, with no sixes is not good enough, and 6 wickets lost is almost unacceptable when chasing down a score under 140.

Those are my points. Now deal with them.

Yours Sincerely,

Michael Ashford

P.S. A full scorecard can be found overleaf to aid you with your reflection of the match, as I know you struggle to remember important points, like who controls your salary.

OOC: Due to my just basic knowledge of cricket, I did a poem related to the now-happening Independence celebrations in SJG (That celebration is IC stuff)

I'll name you Freedom

The boasted fire
I write your name

The meat that is offered
The friendly fronts
In the hand that tends
I write your name

In the crystal of surprises
These gracious lips
Above the silence
I write your name

In my fallen shelters
In my headlights collapsed
On the walls of my boredom
I write your name

In the absence without desire
In the naked loneliness
In the line of death
I write your name

In the recovered health
The danger gone
In the hopes of memory
I write your name

By the power of a word
I restart my life
I only see you born
By naming you Freedom.

Dear Mr Jamieson,

As you began your two match ban during the game against Apox, I felt it only courteous to inform you of the proceedings, so that you can be aware of the situation of your team. I must however warn you that your position as head coach is currently under review thanks to your comments to me a few days ago. However, we do not foresee any change in the current set up before the end of this tournament. I must also inform you of the recent changes in the committee, with Harold Major resigning over the fact that you have been banned, and Timothy Farthing being brought in in his place.

As you know, we needed to win this match to be sure of qualification to the semi finals, but a loss would have been ok, as long as the winners of the Barunia v Darmen match did not have a higher net run rate than us. With this in mind we batted first, to try and post a monumental score. Foster and Wright began brightly, hitting 20 runs off the first 3 overs, before Wright succumbed to a Swizzard inswinger. Then Fedman came in, and began to up the ante, hitting fours all over the place. However, before a partnership could develop, Foster nicked behind off Gilbert. We were 50-2 off 6 overs, an alright position. Fedman was at his best though, milking the bowlers for twos, and hitting the occasional boundary along the way. As I took over control of selection in your absence, I decided to reinstate Thomas Mann, who I feel you incorrectly dropped early on in the tournament, and who has been underplayed. Whilst he did not perform well in this innings, I fully expect him to in later matches. He scored only 7, but was starved of the strike by Fedman, so I feel he can be excused somewhat. By the time he was out, we had batted 9.5 overs for 72, with 3 wickets down. However, Fedman continued to hit out, with new man Vorm only playing a supporting role at first. A partnership of 48 from 37 balls then meant that we were 120-4 from 16 overs, Fedman finally getting out for a score of 67. Vorm then took up the challenge, but was poorly aided by Lukano and Day, who both got out for low scores, meaning that with 7 balls to play, we were 145 for 6. Vorm was on strike, and needed to get down the other end so he could try and get a big last over in. However, he missed completely, which meant that Gonga, whom I have also reinstated, was on strike. He couldn’t score off the first three balls, and then was bowled by the fourth, meaning Levesford came in. He missed his first ball, but got a single off the final ball of the innings, meaning we finished on 146-7, a decent total, but one which could have been better considering the position we were in after 19, or even 16 overs.

As is the norm, Levesford and Tomlinson opened up, but after 3 overs Wright changed the bowling around, bringing Shelford on for Tomlinson. This brought immediate results, as he got Hughes to sky one to Mann at mid on. Levesford stayed on, bowling his allocation straight away. He eventually got the wicket of Brigham, who edged behind to Day. Levesford was then replaced by Lukano, who nabbed Orbiton lbw in his first over. The left arm spinner Gonga was brought on at the other end, but gave away 8 runs from his first over. After 10 overs then, Apox were not in a great position at 63-3. However, Walters and al Menzes then put on a brilliant partnership of 73, smashing Gonga all over the Bastion Dover ground, and it wasn’t until Lukano returned in the 15th over that he managed to get al Menzes caught at deep mid wicket. After Watt was then run out, the returning Shelford got Crookshaw caught by Lukano at slip for a golden duck. Apox were crumbling, going from 128 for 3 to 139 for 6. However, they still only needed 8 runs from 4 overs, so it looked like a certain victory. Before Lukano got involved again. In the last two balls of his last over, he got rid of Nomad with a brilliant yorker, before Gilbert tamely hit it straight back to him first ball. Lukano finished with 4 for 27, a great effort. He had managed to put the States in a position to tie the game, despite the fact defeat had looked so certain. However, I feel that Wright then made a huge mistake bringing on Gonga, when both double wicket taker Shelford and the economical Tomlinson has an over left. As such, Gonga managed to bowl four dots, before Walters hit the winning three runs off the fifth ball of the over. Fortunately, this defeat does not knock us out of the tournament, as we finished off with a better net run rate than Barunia, meaning that we have indeed qualified for the semi finals.

I hope you are having fun not being able to see your team

Yours Sincerely,

Michael Ashford

Dear Mr Jamieson,

As you have now served your internally imposed two match ban, this will be the last letter you will receive from me during this tournament. I will now hand the reigns back over to you for the final, which we qualified for today. However, I must also inform you of some ‘goings-on’ in the committee. It seems that Harold Major’s resignation over your ban, which I correctly put in place, has sparked off a lot of controversy both in the media and in the rest of the committee. In addition, Timothy Farthing, who replaced Major, seems to be fanatically opposed to me, and is leading a campaign to have me removed as head of the committee. Fortunately, I wield too much power for this to ever happen. I think it can be safely assumed that I will lead the committee for years to come. I am only informing you of this because you are head coach of the national team, not because you can do anything to stop it. Even if you could I doubt you would, considering your hostility to me.

Anyway, the semi final. We were playing against San Jose Guayabal, who topped their super eights group. Despite the fact we were underdogs, as you know we have been for most of the tournament, the team seemed to be quietly confident. San Jose Guayabal won the toss and batted first. Our bowling performance was very good. Perhaps predictably now, Levesford opened the bowling from the Lothian end, and with his very first ball got William Pérez to nick behind to Day. 0-1 from 1 ball! The rest of the first over only yielded 3 runs. Tomlinson shared the new ball, rushing in from the Poplar end, and his first over was similarly miserly, conceding just 2. San Jose Guayabal were 5-1 from 2 overs. Levesford’s second over was slightly more expensive, 9 coming from it. Tomlinson was accurate as ever though, only another 4 coming off his second set of 6. Throughout the rest of the tournament Wright has changed the bowling at that point, but in this match he kept both bowlers on, a masterstroke which perhaps won us the semi final. Perhaps they were working to a plan, who knows, but whatever the reason, it worked. After Levesford had conceded another 8 off his third over, which left San Jose Guayabal on 26-1 from 5, Tomlinson ran through the rest of the top order, removing Thompson and Serrano in the first three balls, before a single put their no 3, Jacobs, on strike. He was also dispatched, his off peg having flown back about 30 metres after a ripper from the bowler of the tournament for us. At the end of over 6, they were 27-4, a great position for us as the bowling side to be in. Levesford then tried to get in on the act, bowling a great over, all six bowlers causing the batsmen problems, and only 3 runs being conceded. Tomlinson then bowled another fantastic over, leaving MacLean with no hope of playing a convincing shot. After two edged fours, he was finally put out of his misery from the 5th ball of the over, which spat up at him, and he limply defended straight at silly mid-on. San Jose Guayabal were now 38-5 from 8, a terrible position, especially in a semi-final. However, one problem with using up all one’s best bowlers’ overs straight away is that it gives the opposition an opportunity to escape from the hold you have over them. Which is what they did. The other three bowlers failed to make any immediate impact. Shelford and Lukano managed to keep the scoring at a relatively low rate, but Ramiz Gonga dropped short too often, was too loopy, and bowled too many full tosses. Despite this poor performance I still stand by my decision to include him in the squad in your absence, and I guarantee that he will come good in the final. If you know what is good for you you won’t drop him. If you do there will be consequences. After 15 overs, San Jose Guayabal had got out of a hole, reaching 76-5, but we still had the upper hand. However, Gonga continued to bowl poorly, and after 19 overs, San Jose Guayabal were 128-5, Aslanov and Magnussen having put on a partnership of 90.Lukano managed to bowl a decent final over, finally removing Magnussen for 39, and only conceding 5 off the over. Whilst the final score of 132-6 may look pretty good from a Fenbarric point of view, considering our position after 8 overs, we should have done better.

Our chase looked like it was going to go brilliantly when Foster hit a four from the first ball, but this proved to be a false dawn, as both he and Wright got out pretty quickly, leaving us at a quick but costly 17-2 from 2 overs. It didn’t get much better after that, as Mann went for a three ball duck by way of a bouncer which he hooked straight down deep mid-wicket’s throat. 18-3 from 3. Fedman and Vorm tried to get the ball moving, and succeeded in part, putting on partnership of 18 from 10 balls, but Fedman then got out to one that stayed low, and soon we were reeling at 36-4 from 4.2 overs, going well above the required rate, but losing a lot of wickets. However, Lukano was in at six, and he produced a bit of magic from his first ball, taking an 87mph ball from outside off, and smashing over wide long on’s head for 6. He then shared a partnership of 13 with Vorm, who eventually got out for 12 off 10, and at 49-5, we were in a lot of trouble, with the potential of being bowled out before reaching the target. This potential was soon diminished though, as Day came in and calmed the storm, whilst Lukano continued to hit out, at one point hitting two sixes off two consecutive points. Soon Day was getting on the act, hitting a six of himself in the 10th over. At the midway point we were 111-5, and looking good for a victory. Lukano had just reached his first ever international fifty with yet another six, and as long as the two played sensibly they would easily reach the target of 134. However, this is Çe Lukano we are talking about. He is probably the most fickle player we have, and he as he attempted to cut a ball that was heading for leg stump, he chopped on, opening up the tail. Which was an opening that San Jose Guayabal exploited, removing Gonga for 1 almost immediately. Day did his best to get as much of the strike as possible, but he couldn’t prevent Levesford, who had hit a four off his first ball from being bowled off the last ball of the 13th over, with the score at 125-8, and 19 still needed. In the 14th over, Day hit a two, two fours and a six, but couldn’t get a single off the final ball, meaning Shelford was on strike with 3 still needed. Fortunately he edged a two off the first ball, which brought the scores level, but he couldn’t keep out a brilliant yorker from Jan Lewis, meaning the score was 133-9. Although the scores were level, if San Jose Guayabal got the final wicket without us scoring, they would have won by virtue of less wickets lost, a point you may have missed during your ban. Tomlinson’s first ball brought high drama though, as Lewis bowled an inswinger that crashed into his pads. The umpire gave him out after much deliberation, which meant that San Jose Guayabal had won, but as the Guayabalians were celebrating, Tomlinson immediately reviewed the decision, an action he could take thanks to the incredible tech facilities at Park Central Oval, and ones which I think we should attempt to replicate at our own grounds. After a very long wait, the replays on the big screen, despite the fact that they gave Lewis the all clear on a no-ball, pitching ok and hitting ok, showed that Tomlinson had in fact got the tiniest of edges on the ball. He was not out. As San Jose Guayabal lined up to bowl again, Day pointed out to the umpires that the two batsmen had in fact run through for a single whilst the fielders were appealing, meaning that technically we had won. The umpires checked this on the screen, and confirmed the fact. We had won. San Jose Guayabal may have felt somewhat cheated, going from finalists to losers in the space of minutes, but we won fair and square, and we are in the final of a major tournament for the first time ever!

I look forward to it, and hopefully you can inspire the team to a win, although I fully suspect that if we do win, you won’t have had much to do with it, it will all have been down to my incredible foresight.

Yours Sincerely,

Michael Ashford

APOX VICTOR

Well, it's finally happened, with the Apox National Cricket side reaching their second consecutive final, and this time, being able to pull off the win, as opposed to walking away with a runners-up medal, like last time.

Captain Scott Gilbert played his last game internationally, and what a game it was for him, taking an incredible 6 wickets before scoring the winning runs to give Apox it's first taste of cricketing success, with the game watched by a large audience back home. He leaves the national team with the most wickets by far, 125, currently putting him as the only player to have taken more than 100 wickets for the side, and in addition to that he has nearly made a thousand runs over his 53 innings, including 4 half centuries in that number.

It was clear to see what this meant to the team as they celebrated their trophy win - a lot of hard work and plenty of new faces had to be brought in for this to be a success - and it shows that Apoxian cricket is still being one of the pace setters in the modern game, something good for our nation as a whole.
