Image Mulholland : a new and inedited champion!

Mulholland now claimed the title of elite division in the country,and are the new,literally,champions of Rotschwarzland (Red Blackiland).The team made a poor performance in the cup last season,being eliminated to Foster Valley,3-1 away and 0-0 at home.But the team maintained the base from the previous seasons with Noveth,Manuel Jansen,Carmona and brought the most talented player of the country,Felipe Schwartz (Felipinho) with a lot of money gave to Cruce Estrella,the team gained form and since the begin was in the fight for the title with Petersburg,Ferentásctvaros and the others.The team knocked the door in other few opportunities,but now entered,in fact,into the hall of fame of the country's football.The title went to Mulholland hands with a goal from the Cenian Will Noveth in the last minute,in Cestara Stadium (Athletic Cestara home stadium),the away Mulholland fans went crazy with this great moment of emotion,a huge 'Torrrr' could be heard and after the match a lot of flares in the away section while the Cestara fans was more quietly,defeated and with Bluebéhrry victory,losed a spot in Globe Cup,so much dreamed as a team that was recently promoted.After that,the players and the away fans joined with the millions of Mulholland fans around the streets and began to celebrate the title.

Was a tough battle,but Mulholland was more consistent than Petersburg,Ferentásctvaros and the others,mainly in away game and with that hold the glory.Can Mulholland make a good performance in the Champions Cup?

Petersburg in the first seasons was always a team that played the second division and,gradually,growing and became better and better with the past of the days,promoted to the first division,gave the first step remaining in it and not only that,quickly ended entire seasons in the middle and top 5 for,later,frequent the top 3 and fight for the title,as happened in this season and almost occured in the previous one,the team fought for it until half of the season.With a interesting project similar to El Corona's one,with many support from the local community and enterprises brought talented and competent players and joined it with home-made ones as Beckenstander and Mudra,the willpower and bravure of this team are incredible,also,the home games with a fantastic crowd made the difference for this great campaign.

Brice Bermar (95X) and Tyson Hart (Northern Sunrise Islands) are two foreigners that deserves to be highlighted,Bermar as a midfielder scored many goals and was very helpful as a mid-player that was responsible to create and mount the attack moves,one of creative touches from the well-trained Petersburg midfield,as well as Tyson Hart that scored your goals and made Mudra and Beckenstander easier,very important player from the offensive Petersburg triangle,your velocity broke rival defenses and completed the attack.




Port Tudor,Ganton and Easter Redinxson : the sadness of relegation



These teams will no longer be a part of the elite division in the next season,in the last games,the sadness took the entire soul of the fans,mainly by the fact that the three played at home.But the relegation divided the emotion of the fans : in one side,sadness and disappointment with a thought that they could be better,brought better,played better,even with the mood and willpower from being promoted from the second division and experience a total new stage,but in other side,the sadness could not be so huge,the teams that was above the three,won your games with more tranquility : Doherty and Rodeo (the first is strange to put into this case,because made a great first half and fell apart with the many draws and losses,but is a team that are growing and can,without doubts,make a better season in the next year.),the first won your derby against Athletic Meskitáh by 3-0,and Rodeo won against Ferentásctvaros by 3-1 in the game that took off the title from Feren's hands and gave it to Mulholland with Ganton losing by 0-4 to The Strip in home.The reaction of the fans was fairly good,even with all the bad feels,claps and motivation chants could be heard inside the stadiums,thank all the bravure from the teams and knowing,of course,that the objective was always fight for the relegation,specially if you'll talk about results : these three conquered great results against better teams or biggest ones,in home and away and with this,we can say,that they didn't come to the elite division only for walks,tours and travels.The passion from the fans needs to be highlighted,even with the bad results,worst of this ones,the fans continued to support and chant for the team.

Hashbury,the brave team that was always put one that could give difficulty to the biggest teams in the country and made talented teams with young players had a very poor past season,being relegated to the second division,a shame for all Hashbury fans,but all of them known that this could be a chance of redemption,come back to the previous stage as a middle 'under development' team and began the project to be a big team in the future.
Since from the beginning of the league,Hashbury was one of the teams (beyond El Corona Athletic) that was always at the top or near the first positions.El Corona made a better begin of campaign than Hashbury,but in the middle to the end,Hashbury won more than El Corona and tied less,and this was the fact that brought the title to Hashbury.The home crowd was very important to the team that,with a great capacity,took advantage from the home venue value and made your results at home.No doubt,that the technical comitee,the coach,the team and specially the club Hashbury itself gave a nice first step to returning to the first division,to the previous stage and the start of new promising times.

The team is leadered by the topscorer and national team player Ferreth,with the Osarian Zoe Barnes,along with new young players that was bought by Hashbury like Heinz Lecke from Ferentásctvaros,the Osarian Eusebio Chavez from Athletic Meskitáh,other good players that needs to be highlighted are Quandt,Wolkenstein,Richtofen and the Northern Sunrisian Arthur Schiavone.

El Corona finally will be promoted to the first division,even with the loss to Spartak Vantouxé in the last fixture.A team that was always in the 'almost' state when we talk about be promoted to the first division in the second one,in the first seasons of the return of the professional football in the country the team made very poor campaigns,always in the last positions in the table,but a project established a great effort for develop the structure of the club,making partnerships with very good sponsor and producing talented players,the result came in a few years.Now,the objective,will be an attempt for remain in the first division.It's symbol of how the smaller/average clubs are growing too fast around the country making the league more competitive.

Athetic Casanegra,the big rivals of Wydad Casanegra (these two teams makes the Casanegra's derby),was promoted for the first division this season too while Wydad ended in the middle of the table and certainly the Wydad fans needed to watch it from the TV and follow the Athletic Casanegra fans celebrating around the streets and of course in your home stadium after a 3-1 win against Ocean Docks.First time ever that Athletic plays in the first division in a similar case to El Corona but with way smaller proportions actually,by the fact,the team gains a good set of money and have a good sponsor since the begin of the return of professional football.

Matchday One

The first thing that happens when you show up these days is people make you eat a banana. It's not bad, I guess, if you like bananas. I can't say I'm a super healthy eater but they've always been a fruit I can more or less tolerate, and these taste just like any other.

It's that they're locally grown that unnerves you. The city shouldn't be warm enough to support the immense trees that rose out of the greyness, laden with ever-shifting possibilities, and yet here they are. Other towns didn't do so well, emerging from the dark times with crises of their own that have led to the isolationism, but perhaps this is what the smug conservatism reaped. Trust in what's unchanging, avoid the glib shortcuts, and something wholesome will take root...

I should probably explain. I'm Giuseppe Neruike, and I signed on to cover Bassabook Old Boys after their great season last year. I know, I know, right--the time to write about them was while they were winning the title, having come eighth the season before that. But, you know, I'm just a bandwagon hopper, what do I know?

So anyway, I showed up just in time for the opener, a shutout win at home against Keppal. And, of course, ensuing snack.

Matchday Two

Already a match that could have huge implications for the rest of the season, as Bassabook journey west to take on last season's runners-up, Namiri Independent. Once, Independent fancied themselves a kinder, gentler, Namiri, with less soulless identity politics, less crushing sisten'ha karela, and more of a quest to be everybody's second team (or at least the earnest young kids' who still punctuate it a (1)-4-4-2). These days they're trying to decide whether they still want a nickname and engaged in a thorny lawsuit with yet another splinter Ephesian FC fanclub over naming rights (Ephesian FC has a lot of weird fanclubs these days since signing their manager from the Spenson Suburbia defense).

More to the point, Independent led for most of the season last cycle and only broke down near the end. I could tell they'd be determined to return to form, parrying several passes back and forth throughout the midfield. While the first half was scoreless, even the hip locals were getting into it.

Tad Menken finally put Bassabook on the board shortly after the restart, with a header off a short-ranged pass. But that only served to awake the dragon in Sharag. By which I mean "metaphorically inspire Namiri Independent to play better and tie the game," I'm not making any kind of claim about the existence of, like, dragons in Sharag, that's someone else's job, anyway, a blast from Satyapal Chakraverti made Bassabook's defense look mediocre, that was that.

Matchday Three

A goalless draw at home, hard to muster any kind of attack against Excelsior Slogda. This let Spenson Suburbia go top (by beating Bassabook's archrivals, 102d Jr.s), ahead of Namiri Independent on goal difference.

I watched with Timothy Idoni, whose sister Olivia is one of the midfield juggernauts. "Football was never my thing growing up," he explained through a stilted, hard-to-place accent, "but I was young enough to know what it meant to my peers in a way that my parents maybe hadn't remembered. So after everything--Bassabook isn't home for me, none of us grew up here. I wound up in Nuel, eventually, and we came through it differently, but I think she just wanted an opportunity to have somewhere to play, to be valued for that. They all did, obviously." I didn't get the impression that he's trying to hide anything, just that his memories of what it meant to follow the champions are going to come at a very different angle than mine, if at all.

Matchday Four

Bassabook emerged from Wayr Stadium with biting wind behind them, and perhaps the sense that they were very, very lucky. This can only mean, of course, that they were slated for their "away game" against Rovers United, and the Rovers wanted to give them a challenge. The same challenge Keppal had last season. Maybe, I wondered, this is a new tradition to make life unpleasant for the defending champions?

It certainly didn't feel unpleasant when Samuel Quine got BOB off to an opening lead, weather aside. But Shayna Nelson's goal tied things back up for the Rovers, and then Kelci Tanaka-Whit put them ahead. After the half, Nelson converted a free kick, and then it was 3-1.

If I'd known then what I know now...But I was tired and cold and wondering whether I could get any breakfast food at the concession stand. (Sadly, you actually can't these days, because it's not worth it to staff it once a season for the Rovers' away games. I would suggest that some enterprising entrepreneur in Bassabook get on that, because seriously, breakfast food, people, but I'm guessing that much capitalism is also somewhere on the list of puritanical vices.)

So at this point I was staring into the distance and seeing whether anything had been built or could grow at higher altitude than this bleeping stadium, so I almost missed Richard Graham's goal. Set up, of course, by Olivia Idoni's looping pass. Suddenly BOB were only a goal back, and it was anyone's game.

They must have burnt a lot of energy just trying to stay warm, because despite everything I said about the city not being a banana climate, it sure wasn't a climate ready to prepare them for that game either. The Rovers were (obviously) far more fit. Thing was, they weren't exactly ready for the altitude either, and needed to burn through their substitutions just as much as we did. It was ultimately a substitute who would decide it, Pietro Williams. With five minutes left, the unheralded attacking midfielder got his chance to break forward for us, receiving a cross from Menken and sending it home. Three-all, and somehow the exhausted defense found the strength to fall back and hold it there.

On the way down, it occurred to me that maybe it wasn't just a challenge. Maybe honoring Bassabook's championship by having them play here was, in this isolationist era, the closest Zwangzug could get to using it for the national team.

Matchday Six

For Williams, the fortunate substitute, the team is family--literally. His aunt Rhonda was Bassabook's first manager. "I thought that playing somewhere else would be the sign that I'd made it, you know, that I'd succeeded on my own merits and not just because I was related to her. So now--knowing that I'm a marginal player, I'm not going to be the star, an Idoni or anyone, I do feel the need to prove myself. At the same time? I know that the experience at another club wouldn't be anything like this one, the chants...such as they are...we have something unique here, so for better or for worse, this is caught up in what football means to me."

He was on the bench for a win against FTC United. Namiri Independent have fallen back slightly after shelling a bunch to Cham last week (nobody's defense was really on form), and they just got through an exhausting and high-scoring draw with Spenson, who remain top.

Matchday Seven

It's not the touchiest rivalry in the league, but it's probably the loudest--Canbix versus Bassabook. You may be wondering whether the bitter center after the missing months was any more bitter than beforehand; even Keppal just waved their hands about a curse and then went back to pointing out how absolutely ridiculous it is that Keppal City and Keppal District are two different places. But come on, lots of countries have kind-of cursed stadiums, right?

Well, if dealing with old-time Canbix was sulking under a cloud of smog, dealing with new-time Canbix is like sulking under the shadows, where people occasionally hunt you down and attack you (not for nothing did they say games will sometimes finish with nine women on the field...) No clear good guys or bad guys with, heck, even the capital or the FTC's "moral clarity" (they're both completely crazy, all right, but at least they're the heroes of their own story). Canbix is just perched on the edge, as usual.

The fans at least never change, still singing darkly and flipping out if you call them horses, despite their mascot looking kind of like, well, whatever a "Nightrider" is supposed to be. We yelled back and forth, and I quickly got up to speed on all the verses of "we are too still singing, so there," while no doubt the Canbix press was doing a refresher course on the rhythms of "triplets that are definitely not galloping in any way so don't make this weird." Finally, Menken scored, which was our cue to be an Accomplished Visiting Team and launch into a tribute to him (which I have yet to memorize).

Best of all; Slogda did their thing and held Spenson to another goalless draw, putting Bassabook on top again!

Matchday Nine

An important trip, out to Spenson. A win would have put the Suburbians right back on top so they tried attacking, and BOB's defense looked awkward in times, they're not really configured for playing for the half-point. Nevertheless, they wound up destroying any hope for momentum by keeping the ball on the margins of the midfield, with lots of throw-ins and breaks in the action. While Spenson had several opportunities to position the ball where they wanted it, they couldn't get anything going. On the other end, their defense looked fine and in title-contending form that day (they've had some questionable showings on this front), it was just that Bassabook's attack never really got going either. Scoreless final.

Matchday Twelve

Since the win against Canbix, Bassabook has drawn five games in a row. This, the fifth, was against Ephesian, a Globe Cup side last time who are now twelth. Mostly because their defense...sucks. To try and get to the bottom of their issues I would need another story (maybe my editor will hire me?)

In the meantime, what you need to know is that Bassabook's success last year was only in part due to Idoni's remarkable breakout--they have another star just as young, and who's been playing alongside her for many years. Her name is Ogechukwukama Guttuso, but "Ogechi" to all and sundry. Mostly sundry.

Guttuso would have definitely led both teams in mileage if either team was wearing those little pedometer things that allegedly track how much effort you are putting into the game or announcers' squiggly drawings on the screen had tried to approximate them, but there weren't any of these kinds of statistics. Anyway, she was charging up and down the midfield, never tiring, but to little effect--in fact, she may have been out of position in allowing Michelle Lawrence to slip by her and set up a pass to Connor Tao-Dawson for the first goal. (Ephesian, of course, feature the same "X" or five-person midfield that the national team did for a while, and the club in particular prize strength in that "linchpin" role. In Lawrence alone, Ephesian don't quite have a match for the Idoni-Guttuso duo, but I'd be hard-pressed to compare the strength of their midfields as a whole.)

Not to be deterred, Guttuso continued to set the pace, and eventually Quine kept up, equalizing for Bassabook. Graham pulled ahead, but Rachel Duarte scored once again to tie it back for the visitors.

Still, we remain undefeated and in outright first, so I'll take it.

Wait, was this whole thing just a social experiment to see how long it takes an objective neutral to adopt sports person plural? I'll come back with really deep and provocative social commentary soon, I promise! It'll be worth your time!

Matchday Thirteen

Guariday. Here's a city where trees belong--a true rainforest, with treehouses and triquetras, zebras and...people who think dancing with zebras would be a good idea, folktales and folks who think they're actually in the suburbs. To be fair, the new-look Guariday is a little better about that; you know when you're close to the stadium because they actually have security checkpoints! Yes, in Zwangzug! No, I don't believe they care about keeping the fans or the players safe, and I don't think anyone came up with the idea just to protect the adorable rainforest (as is traditional, I didn't get to see most of the trees because the train from Sharag is underground). It's mostly about making sure you didn't smuggle anything in and crowing if anyone brought any offending foodstuffs, say. (Of course, it holds up the line for the rest of us, but that's the price we pay.)

So we came early knowing how long it would take, and I got in just in time for kickoff. There, as is only fitting, I was treated to another enduring Namiri Forest tradition; a scoreless draw.

Spenson beat Trink to go top of the league.

Matchday Fourteen

Now here's a rivalry. Well, maybe. Do rivalries require both parties to beat each other on a somewhat equal basis? Because if that were an additional qualification, then Bassabook versus 102d is probably out.

BOB dominated. From the get-go, they controlled the pace of play, and once Menken scored the opener there was no looking back. Idoni herself got on the scoreboard before a brace from Graham. Somewhere in there was a goal from Alicia Hernandez of 102d, but I can't say I was paying a lot of attention to their brave fans who'd made the long trip down ICE**, so I can't say if even they noticed or cared.

If there was any consolation for 102d, it wasn't in them getting on the board at all. They are dead last and likely to remain so. It would probably have come in the fact that this Bassabook team rejects "old boys" almost entirely, and is powered by two young women--whose name is really winning?

Although that means that Idoni and Guttuso could conceivably keep beating up on them for years into the future, so maybe that's not a good thing.

We (if my editor is going to get angry anyway I might as well be a bandwagon fan of a team that is actually good) still didn't go top, because Spenson demolished the overachieving Twineur Bugs. Namiri Independent beat a slumping (or busy diamond-chasing?) Trink to close the gap behind us as well.

Matchday Fifteen

Back on top thanks to more unexpected help, with Sporting Esper defeating Spenson. The Robins weren't really expected to contend for the Globe Cup or anything like that, but halfway through the season, here they are, relying on goal difference to hold off even-less-expected Twineur. (And then again, that's what people said about Bassabook last season.)

Bassabook did have to win for that assistance to be worth anything, though, and did so easily against Arlington. Nice city, you'll get a couple braver pundits than me speculating that it it sums up the country in miniature. I wouldn't go to such lengths. Decide for yourself, maybe--there are certainly people here who are just as set in their ways from matters of spelling to fundamental truths of the universe as the faithful in Bassabook. Unlike the people in Bassabook most of these people don't want to talk to you about it so there won't be much in the way of provocative chants. The staff pays lip service to the ideal of striving for balance in things such as formation, but "balance" in theory only--their formation would be quite attacking if carried out by many clubs, and yet they go about it in an extremely defensive way, hoarding whatever they can salvage.

Their press is an unusual bunch, and despite their club's history (they're a MUFN original), the local paper doesn't actually care that much about football, preferring to stick to baseball for years. I spoke to a source in the press box who preferred to stay anonymous but was enthusiastic about my project. "Sure, it would have been great to follow them winning an upset title. So what? Even if this season is an anticlimax, it's still someone's season. Each piece in the narrative matters, each strand is worth saving. How much richer you'll make it, whatever it is!"

I had a headache on the way out and the security guard looked like she wanted to quarantine me in case it was contagious.

Matchday Seventeen

"You know, there's stereotypes, I guess, in countries like ours. That men are the hotshots up front, scoring all the goals and showing off, and that women hang back and are timid on defense. I never bought into that; that's not to say in many ways I didn't have a very sheltered, conservative, upbringing, because in those tiny first-generation towns, a lot of things were pretty regimented. On the field, if we could get eleven people together, that was good enough and we never looked back."

I'd say the break didn't really hurt Bassabook any, but on defense, the club did look a little...uncertain. Maybe it's better to say that Namiri Independent were just as fired up as we were, and their offense let it show too.

[There's no such thing as a mid-season break, is there? -ed]

Not really, I'm just curious whether the Idonis went back to wherever the heck it is they come from. Dots on a map, I'm telling you. In a way, the hiatus hit every big city differently--do the tiny first-generation cities each have their own, new traditions on smaller scales, or have they weathered the storm?

Anyway, if nothing else, Olivia was inspired. She came out strong with an assist on Menken's opener, then added one of her own. But the visitors would rally back, with Komala Kristinsdottir scoring one, then setting up Ako Moarefi for the equalizer. Satyapal Chakraverti, who'd scored their only goal on the first leg, would have the honor of putting them ahead.

Bassabook isn't used to playing from behind, and I write this with the uneasy perspective of perhaps being willing to distance myself from the adopted plural as soon as things go south. (Go north? Go west?) I shouldn't have worried.

"It's one thing to have a connection, I guess, but so what, there are lots of people who have great connections. If we become the focal points, that takes away from all the other talent. What I pride myself on is the ability to fit into the team, and hopefully lift them around me--and I know Ogechi is every bit as capable of the same."

Idoni still had it. The midfield didn't back down, and after she drew a foul, Graham took the free kick, setting up Quine for a long goal. 3-3, and we were just getting started. It would be Guttuso's turn to lift a long pass to Ryan Darrith to regain the lead. Not to be outdone, Idoni scored her second of the day off a pass from defender Lauren Retisol (yes, they have average-ranking women, too; not as many as other clubs, but some).

Independent knew that their local rivals were doing them no favors, getting shut out (of course) by Spenson, who would climb over them if the scoreline held. So they pulled one back, with Moarefi tacking on their fourth. But Darrith would make it 6-4 to Bassabook, putting things back out of reach and bringing an end to the exhilarating contest.

"In some ways, these are the kinds of games we played as kids. Before people told us, oh come on, that would never happen, one and two facing off like that--too implausible, right?" Clearly exhausted, she finds strength to giggle. "I guess I had to hold onto my youth, to show them."

Matchday Twenty-Four

A convincing win against Spenson--Bassabook's twelfth--keeps them on top, and Spenson narrowly ahead of Twineur in third. Namiri Independent remain second, and in fact have fourteen wins to their name, but they've taken losses too.

This isn't easy to write, not here in Zwangzug where we value precision so highly, but hear me out. I've heard it said that time feels subjective, not because we're measuring it weirdly, but because as adults, every year is a smaller and smaller fraction of our remembered lives. As children, the same amount of time seems much longer.

Is it that way for sports, too? Do Idoni and Guttuso knock off opponent after opponent with easy shrugs, the colors of the league all blurring together, because they've seen it all before? Or because once, earlier on, they played without clocks and fields that stretched to infinity, made memories there that define them now?

Perhaps there are fans now who couldn't tell you who top the UICA ranks, who assume that the last few Champions Cups have zipped by, but could replay the first few CMSC cycles in slow motion. I catch a few Zapata jerseys every so often, hand-me-downs from the twinning days. When I talked to one fan, he said to be sure to pass on his congratulations to the new Candelariasian president, although I don't think he knows whether their elections/national memorial event happens in the spring or on December fifth or what so maybe don't talk to him about time dilation.

Matchday Twenty-Seven

"Rivalries, I understand. Being better than 102d, louder than Canbix, if that's something that motivates a player, or a team--that's great. Do what you need to do. For me, though, there's only one city that I always want to beat on a personal level, to prove myself."

The more things change, the more they stay the same. The first leg of this encounter finished with a 2-2 draw. This one ended the same way. But what a difference. Last time around, we were playing a slumping capital side that picked up their first point in five games, by virtue of us not really being good either. This Ephesian are undefeated in their last eight. And while Guttuso was clearly playing her heart out in both legs, the first time around it was only leading to frustration. Here, she was the player of the game.

"I don't believe my family would have moved here if they didn't recognize this was a--tolerant, inclusive country. I think the vast majority of the people in every city here are not racist or even xenophobic, in that they wouldn't treat people differently based on the color of their skin, or even if you weren't born in this country. There are refugees from war and famine, floods and violence here--succeeding just like me. And welcomed!"

She set up Darrith easily for the first goal; Maureen Ermar-Chell, Ephesian's overworked center-back, was out of position. But the hosts, cheered on discordantly by their incredibly disparate fanbases (there's the retro tacticians, the takilans who'll take whatever offense they can get, a few anti-specialization comrades, the offbeat epistle fans, the newfangled antigovernment protesters these days, and a few poor souls who just happen to live in the capital and want to support their local team, was that too much to ask, to name only a few) tied it up. Tyrus Neuville-Platt received a pass from Michelle Lawrence, and there we were. Connor Tao-Dawson gave the hosts the lead after halftime.

"In Zwischen though, I think people are just afraid. That Acquans carry with us the curse that could erode a city, a country--this timewall business. Which--I'm not sure what they expect us to do. My birth country fell apart, and so what, I'm supposed to walk the earth now? Or was, as a little kid? Don't get me wrong, I don't want to stay if I'm not wanted--it just spurs me to succeed that much more, for ninety minutes at a time."

Another beautiful, selfless pass to Idoni; another outstanding conversion from Idoni, and another half-point clinched for Bassabook.

"How did the hiatus affect us? I don't know. But I see one difference--I don't think you saw any Zwangzugian refugees spilling over the borders, bringing their own stereotypes and scaring people overseas with their timewalls. No matter what comes, no matter how long we have, we'll face it together."

Matchday Twenty-Eight

I love Menken as much as the next guy but these chants are getting way too long. At least he scored the only goal against Namiri Forest.

Maybe next season! Depending on how things go. We could still lose this; Namiri Independent are only one point back with two to play...

Matchday Twenty-Nine

I wrote that knowing that, statistically, we have about as easy a run-in as one could hope for. Numbers don't tell the full story, though. (What were you expecting me to say, "on paper"? On paper is the only place I have to explain; it's the ephemeral bytes of 102d that aren't context enough.)

Because that's where we are. 102d. Yet another season, we had the chance to clinch, and yet another season, the vagaries of the schedule randomizer ensured that we'd be here. Even I felt it was almost too surreal to be true, and I've only been really with this team for almost a full season. I can't imagine what the diehards who made the trip felt.

To get here on the ICE** you have to pass through the bitter center, riding through Canbix (mired in thirteenth, now) and Keppal (tied for sixth). Through Nuel, which nobody really cares about now that the baseball league never bounced back. But its regional lines are still going; that was where Guttuso transferred from, all those years ago, to get to the tiny city that became home.

It took Bassabook a while to get going, keyed up by the nervous energy of the day. But 102d, buoyed by holding them, began to slip. Or...maybe they just weren't good. They haven't been a good club for a while. Whatever the case, Retisol set up Quine for the opener.

Then began a run of dominating possession on our part, despite some chants coming almost too fast to parse (that might have been for the best, you can't really get distracted by the locals if you have no idea what they're singing about it). After some great midfield buildup, Menken finally smashed another goal past helpless goalkeeper Jabez McPrase.

Good thing, too, as 102d weren't about to roll over. And let's be clear, they were three points out of fifteenth at this time, their only goal was messing with our run, and that was plenty if you're 102d. If they could have beaten us...well. Hannah Gustafson scored after a series of short passes back and forth from Kazuhiro Blasi-Chang, and having that extra goal was a huge relief in terms of not completely crushing our momentum.

All the same, it still felt like it took a long time to recover the pace after the break, with the weight of history pressing down on us even in youthful 102d. But, if only due to 102d's ineptitude, we found it. A careful possession from Ezekiel Arden-Ria on defense set up Guttuso, and she broke forward for our third goal of the day. Yet again, we found ourselves grateful for it even against, well, Jr.s, as Alicia Hernandez' goal kick set up Blasi-Chang for another. But they could only spoil so much--not the day, not the season.

Attention turned back to Sharag, where Namiri Independent would need a win to keep pace. (The game was not synced with ours, this not being the end of the season--we can actually schedule games at different times, it's not all melodrama every day!) They were drawing 1-1, and our songs were filled with hope (much to the annoyance of the 102d fans who had stuck around out of spite)...and then Compars Ogawa's late winner for Eintracht Trink left no doubt.

Only noise, sounding and resounding. But we're not done. A win to close out the season would put us on twenty-three points, which is among the better championship runs for this league, but not off the charts. Keppal or Slogda, when they've won...well, win more than we do. Instead, we stand on the cusp of a different kind of history.

Matchday Thirty

For being named Pacific Field, the stadium can be more raucous than peaceful sometimes. I'm told it's named in honor of the Five Pacifics, the great oceans from which all nations once emerged, but who really knows?

I know what I saw today. Menken's goal, plenty to beat Arlington. Arden-Ria, Retisol, Cumhur Vogelsong in goal, defending like they were actually good at it. And then the indomitable roar of the fans, ready to claim the trophy as their own. This is the sixteenth season of the 1./ ; it's the first time any team has gone undefeated. That day against the Rovers was the only time we had to play from two goals down!

There will be cynics that say it's not that interesting, that this city is too conservative, that they were predictable, that it's not as interesting the second time around anyway, that this point total was within the historically-standard range for winners so who cares. I don't know what comes next, perhaps it'll be anticlimactic.

But isn't every story defined by its limits? Until a narrative is completed, set apart, some events can't be understood on their own. The same day that marked the downfall of a nation---or maybe just a qualifying campaign--could have been the beginning of something new, if we only agreed on how to measure time. That's no excuse for platitudes and cheap consolations in the moment; by the time anything makes sense or fits together, the agonies fought through might be too much to rationalize. We keep moving forward, keep hoping, on the chance that the next season might be the one that someday makes sense...

[I see you are trying super hard to be deep but stop, cut it out, I'm literally telling you to define this narrative's starting and ending points by the opening and closing matchdays in this season and nothing else, okay. -ed]

All I know is that I've been lucky to follow this club. Even if it wasn't for what I saw this week; the music that echoes with me was worth it on its own.

"Codswallop! You can't just go changing tradition. All teams should play all other teams within a single league to determine outright a true champion, not just any bunch who manage to string together a favourable run."
For nearly 40 minutes, the two spokesmen had been going around in circles; each presenting their case to Djabez Bogg; the current Director of Shytyslysh Football. On the left was Alys Scruphpotte, the effervesent spokeswoman for BetNu and on the right, Phyllyus Rattarsed of Hogs'hed Brewrys.
Phyllyus reminded Djabez of a picture he'd recently seen of the aptly named blobfish, his vast bulk moulding into his chair in a similar way to how you'd imagine a sack of porridge would and great undulous jowls and chins hiding any visible form of neck. Two little eyes squinted through a small pair of rectangular spectacles which balanced ungainly on a ruddy fat noseand atop his head, greasy plumes of greying hair ran down to his shoulders looking in dire need of a good wash. He wheezed and snorted as Alys once again presented her case for BetNu.
"30 teams, across 3 divisions. That's a total of 18 matchdays and think, that would be 18 matches of closely matched teams vying for divisional titles. The top division would be ..."
"30? By my count there's the 24 currently registered teams plus another 5 new entrants from those backwards north-eastern towns. That's 29."
"The Non-descript Puppet Nation team then makes 30."
"We're not seriously considering letting those bloody cat things in the league?!"
Some years earlier, an old fishing vessel had washed ashore on the eastern edge of Shytysle which had turned out to contain a colony of sentient cats who referred to themselves as the Xati. They promptly claimed a slither of land through some bureaucratic loop-hole as for some reason this fishing vessel was classed as an independent country and as no-one in the locale cared enough to challenge the claim, they stayed. Mostly they moped about in the derelict remains of the boat complaining about the weather then ventured off into the forests north of Yccyburn to inflict pain upon the small, non-sentient mammals that resided there. In a move which no-one had predicted, they sought entry to the football league in order to 'encourage intergration' or at least that was their claim ...
"Their paperwork is in order, their squad complies with current legislation. I see no reason to reject them. 30 teams also fits with BetNu's 3 division proposal."
"Pah. 29 teams, 1 league, 56 glorious matchdays and no damned talking felines."
"And how long exactly do you expect '56 glorious matchdays' to take? With BetNu's proposal, we should be able to compete in every UICA competition in each cycle it occurs as well as qualifying to enter teams into the Series B Champions' Cup."
"You WANT to play against foreigners? Good grief woman, what is wrong with you?"
Alys' face screwed up in anger and she turned to Djabez for some mediation. Mr Bogg however, was on the point of falling asleep until the raised voices had roused him and he simply blinked towards the two before starting to drift off again.
"Think of how greater external influence could improve our football system. We could bring international superstars into our teams, increase ticket prices, television rights beyond our shores. Remaining stuck within our own little bubble serves no-one. We are merely stagnating under Hogs'hed's leadership."
"... And what BetNu are suggesting involves further association with bloody foreigners. I say we be done with this whole 'eureka' debacle or whatever is it they call themselves."
"When further development of our league could lead to defeating these foreigners?"
"Well ... actually ... when you put it like that ..."
"... and if Hogs'hed are so concerned with competition containing all our nation's teams, we are yet to instate a national cup and could submit our champion into the international cup winners' cup, the Cygnus I believe and ..."

"As BetNu would be allowing them entry to the league system and 30 is a considerably easier number than 29 for a cup, I'd recommend it. For example, if we were to allow a bye to the second round for two teams, maybe the previous season's champion and, in future, the previous season's cup champion, then a straight knock-out competition is entirely feasible. 29 teams would be needlessly complicated."
