Lions Open With Sweep, Attention Focused on Olympics

In the 31st edition of the World Baseball Classic, the Nova Anglicana Lions opened their 5th classic with a sweep of unranked Forthhanu at Archbishop Stadium in Londinium. The new series format has drawn attention both positive and negative and has led to some frankly questionable scheduling by some participants. The Saintland national team, which is actually composed of foreign nationals who have naturalized, has elected to play tripleheaders in the interest of saving time, while other teams have gone with a more traditional three games in three days format. The new format allows for more fans to see their beloved national teams duke it out on the world stage, but elongates the group stage, which formerly played only one match at a time against a given opponent.

The Lions' sweep was courtesy of a solid offense averaging more than five runs per game, and two shutouts by the #2 and #3 hurlers in the rotation. After Felix Murphy surrendered two runs in seven innings in the first game (a 6-3 win), Justin Garcia tossed nine scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out twelve as the Lions won 6-0 behind Jarrod Novak's 4-RBI day. Chris Keyes attempted to equal that feat, and only permitted five baserunners (two hits and three walks) in his eight innings of work, but his 112 pitches after eight innings caused manager Graig Lowman to pull him. The Lions were leading comfortably 4-0 at that point, but without Josh Jennings' three-run triple in the 6th, they would be living on a knife-edge. Nate Freeman, Brad Bryan, and Felix Murphy will oppose knuckleballer Welsh Mover, all-velocity, no control Biff Moran, and staff ace Ragnor Hillrock of Peruvian Highlands in their next series on the road. Peruvian Highlands took two of three from fellow unranked Wolfbenz in their first series. Also of note, The Royal Barangay greeted Republic Singapore to the international baseball scene with a 20-1 shellacking, while defending champs Super-Llamaland got off to a great start, permitting just one run while scoring 26 in an opening sweep of unrankeds Itanpavia. The Lions' co-hosts Imota took two of three from unranked Bissone on the road in their opening series.

Despite the hot WBC action, much of the sporting world's attention seems to be focused on the games of the IX Olympiad. Nova Anglicana has started well, winning a bronze medal in the men's 4x100 freestyle relay, and seeing cyclist Morris Chambers, not thought to be a medal hope, take gold in the men's road race, surpassing his teammate and national champion Kerry Burke, who finished in seventh place. Other medal hopes for Nova Anglicana include Cedric Mabry in the men's 1500m freestyle and Chastity Tobin in the women's 100m breaststroke. The crack team of minor leaguers sent to the Olympics as a demonstration event have not played yet, but they are favorites to go far in the competition.

However, by far the most talked about incident at the IX Olympiad so far has been the feud between The Serbian Empire and our former neighbours Gregoryisgodistan. Apparently, the Serbs threatened to kidnap and liberate some of the slaves in Gregoryisgodistan's delegation, and Gregory responded by adding the Serbs to their ever-growing enemy list. This led to the women's archery team forgoing the bronze medal in an attempt to kill their opponents the Serbs. They failed, but injured a Serbian spectator. Naturally, the Olympic community rebelled against this action and condemned it, with the president of the Olympic Council threatening to strip competitors of their right to compete and the host Kytlerians installing protective walls around the archery and shooting venues to prevent something of this magnitude from happening again. Let us hope that the WBC stays free of such tragedy and rancor.

Epic Quest Four: Is it dark gray or light black?

One
Two

Four

"Om nom nom," Llama munched through a pasty mouthful of aquatic life, "thish ish -gulp- delishish tuna."

The can was empty and he tossed it onto the sidewalk, savoring the last mouthfuls of his snack. One foot was slightly sore from his journey between dimensions, but as a whole he didn't look that bad as he walked the mile to Wolfie's apartment.

It occurred to him that the previous owner of the tuna fish would be disgruntled, but when his stomach began growling somewhat worryingly, he began to think otherwise.

Groaning and stumbling forwards, stomach in revolt, he managed to walk on to the nearest drinking fountain, where he rinsed the sour taste from his mouth and continued walking.

Llama made it to Wolfie's apartment a few minutes after noon. He knocked on the door, only to discover that nobody was home. There was always time to wait.

Meanwhile, half of a mile back, a member of the litter pickup crew noticed the empty can of tuna and dropped it into his bag, where it would be driven to a landfill and left to degrade for a few thousand years. Nobody noticed the tiny replica of the Hosting Cup inside, and when it grew to full size a few hours later, not a soul was in the landfill to notice.

Beaten. Bloody, beaten, but not conquered.

It was his sixth day in confinement, and Tistan still hadn't given up. They'd tortured him with all they had, beat his eardrums into submission, and still he would not reveal a word about Margaret, his former master.

He was free now, but in a cage. And as Tistan hung limply, dripping blood, he sensed that he could not hold on any longer.

Was it better to be free and constantly in fear of Margaret than caged? Could his captors be trusted? Would Margaret return on a wave of a thousand unlucky souls and snatch him back? He hoped not on the last one. But he knew that life was so much more than hanging from a chain. It was about living, and if he didn't submit, there would soon be none of it remaining.

Tistan closed his eyes, and felt the terrifying whip crack upon his shoulders. He screamed in pain, but he knew the worst was still to come. It was a relatively easy day, he could only hope.

"P. Tistan? Former Cavalry Commander of Margaret, Tistan?"

He nodded limply.

"It's time for the torture room."

"What is it this time?" he asked terrifiedly.

"Thirty-two hours of One Direction's "Best Song Ever", at one hundred and six decibels."

"Please! Please, no! I'll talk!" he cried, throwing himself on the ground. Finally free. But what a price to pay.

The room was dark and smoky as the two occupants greeted each other. It was precisely six thirty in the afternoon. A waft of sunlight drifted in from the window, photons standing seemingly still, but it was nothing to the smoky candlelight that filled the room with its smoke and warmth.

"Tied up those loose ends?"

"Did Tistan today. But...some of the characters, Jeck, they're harder to control."

"Do explain."

"The only thing I can say is...I think we're seeing dimensional merge."

"..."

"I know it's hard to deal with, but unless we handle this more directly, something's going to go wrong and where will we be then?"

"...what are you insinuating."

"We'll do it ourselves. We'll deal with it ourselves."

"...I suppose it's the only way."

Part one of a series

Green Dragon Tavern
Releinthi, Abanhfleft

Cornelius, a well-dressed black man with a love of money, walked into the Green Dragon Tavern with an undecipherable expression on his face. He took a seat beside three girls in the bar, who turned to face him. Their names were Destiny, Alexandra, and Allison. "Hey, Cornelius, d'you want to talk about it?" Destiny asked.

Cornelius shook his head. "Hey, man, can you change the channel to Crescent News Sports?" he asked the bartender.

"Fuck off." But the bartender changed the channel anyway.

"So," Alexandra said, "have you made a decision about the thing?"

"I'm not sure, Lexie," Cornelius replied. "How about this, though? "Abanhfleft's playing against the Serbian Empire for third place in the World Lacrosse Championship. It's the beginning of the third quarter, and we're tied at 9-all. If we win third place, then we go ahead."

Twenty minutes later, the referee blew his whistle, and the game ended. A very impressive scoring run from the Abanhfleft national team had put them up 6 points from their 9-9 deadlock, and Abanhfleft won third place in the 19th edition of the World Lacrosse Championship 15-9 against the Serbian Empire.

After celebrating their country's victory with the rest of the bar's patrons, Cornelius, Destiny, Alexandra, and Allison settled down and began talking in hushed tones. "So the plan goes ahead," Cornelius said. "Destiny, have you got the supplies?" he asked.

"My guy's just waiting for the go ahead," she replied. "You can choose what you want to pack tomorrow."

"Lexie, how 'bout that 'special equipment'?"

"Justin, Dylan, and Jack just finished putting it together, but they're gonna need one more day to test it, see if it actually works."

"Ally, our transportation?"

"I've got the pickup and the panel van in Catarina's lockup."

"All right, then." Cornelius picked up a bottle of Tupolev vodka and downed a fourth of its contents. "We all meet back here two days from now. By then, the special equipment should be ready. Destiny, where's your guy wanna meet again?"

"Down in Skatlar, some alley behind Guantanamo and Korea Avenues."

"Okay. Everyone go to that place one by one, and pick up what you want and what you need." They held up their various bottles of alcoholic drinks and said, "To success."

King Petrus XX Invites Equestrian States Baseball Team to compete in Late-Summer Derby

(SP) With the Equestrian States Baseball Team on their way to the Kingdom for a 3 game series against our National Team, King Petrus XX has decided to be a gracious host to the talking horses from their team. Before the baseball games are played tomorrow, the Late-Summer Derby will be held at the Royal Race Course in St. Petrus. The King has issued an invitation to the horses to compete in the Derby, should they wish to do so. "I want to welcome the remarkable animals from the Equestrian States to my kingdom. Despite their irrational hostility toward me, I want them to know that I bear them no ill will. As proof, I will permit them to compete in the Late-Summer Derby, tomorrow's most prestigious horse race. I have specifically moved this race to an earlier timeslot to enable any Equestrian States baseball players who wish to enter to do so. Other entries from the Equestrian States will be considered for a spot in the field of (hopefully) 20. I hope that this gesture will help to improve Sanctii-Equestrian relations." - King Petrus XX

The Late-Summer Derby has a purse of 85 gold Denarii, for the winning horse. That is equivalent to over 108 thousand Universal Standard Dollars, based on the current gold-USD conversion rate. An additional 85 gold Denarii will be awarded to the other horses in the race, on a proportional basis based upon their finishing positions. Horses that do not finish will not be awarded any money, per Royal Racing Association rules. The winning horse will also receive a ribbon symbolizing its status as a champion racehorse.

The issues between the Equestrian States and our Kingdom date back to a game in World Bowl XX. The Royal Army accidentally flooded the grass at Royal Stadium, leaving most of the field in a condition that wasn't exactly playable. The gridiron team from the Equestrian States accused our Royal Family of having done so intentionally. This was a completely false allegation and utterly preposterous to boot. Why would our Royal Family do that to the condition of the field when our team is built around offense in general and King Petrus XX's athleticism in particular? It just doesn't make sense. Yet, although the situation benefited the Equestrian States, they still got upset about it and intentionally injured King Petrus XX.

Ever since, the talking horses of the Equestrian States have carried an irrational hatred for our Kingdom. This hatred was exemplified by their bribery of the World Cup Committee to deny us the right to host the World Cup. Still, Iesus Christus taught us to love our enemies, so we must not return their hatred with hatred, but with love. Therefore, the King's gesture is the right one and we can only hope that it will show the Equestrians that we don't hate them.

Lost in all of this, of course, is the surprisingly strong performance of the National Baseball Team thus far. After 3 dominant victories over the Vankelland Islands, including a 3-hit complete game shutout by Antonio Magnusson in the second game of the series, our National Team is 5-1, the same record as the Equestrian States. Whichever team wins at least 2 games in this upcoming series will be guaranteed sole possession of first place in Group 6. That makes the 3 upcoming games extremely important, so be sure to watch them on Royal One if you aren't able to get tickets at Royal Park. It will be well worth it...

The Imota Professional Baseball League (IPBL) Official Website: Your WBC 31 Headquarters!

No Sell: Sunwings Drop One, Blank Hessians Twice For Third Place (http://ipbl.im/wbc31/2)

The Sunwings beat Nassau-Hessen in two out of three games to improve their record to 4-2 and tie for second in the group. In the three games, the winner won by at least five runs each time.

Game 1: Imota 2, Nassau-Hessen 7
Haruki Saegusa had a disappointing outing, giving up four runs in six innings of work, and the bats never really got going. Overall, a poorly played game for our side.

Game 2: Imota 6, Nassau-Hessen 0
Masayuki Minase allowed eight hits and two walks but ultimately no runs in a complete game shutout. Kantarou Futaki’s three run shot in the seventh was what put the game out of reach.

Game 3: Imota 5, Nassau-Hessen 0
Makoto Kikuchi gave the bullpen another night off, allowing just four hits and one walk while fanning ten in another complete game shutout. Leonardo Juarez deserves credit for keeping the Sunwings off the bases until the fourth, when the top of the order finally got on and the heart made it count.

The Sunwings’ performance this series, especially the last two games, has renewed debate within Imota about the merits of the designated hitter. Imota’s domestic league traditionally doesn’t use the DH, and in international play, the Sunwings don’t use the DH at home. However, a small but vocal minority of fans has been clamoring for league to adopt the DH , even if only as an experiment for a few games each season, and the most recent series appears to have encouraged them.

The Sunwings will return home for their home opener against Estenia, who are 1-5 after being swept by Milchama. Sakuya Izayoi, Nozomi Itoshiki, and Haruki Saegusa will start.

"Costa Lunians Say the Darndest Things" Episode Summary: Ain't Land Fower

Here is the episode summary for the all-new episode of "Costa Lunians Say the Dardnest Things." This episode is called "Ain't Land Fower" and is the fourth episode in this series where Doybert goes, or tries to go, to Saintland. Here is the summary.

WARNING: SPOILERS AND PLOT REVEALS FOLLOW

The episode opens with Doybert talking to Doybert's Mother about how he has to do a project for school where he researches a country of his choice. He decides to pick Saintland, because he has been there three times before, or so he thinks. However, like with previous times, he believes the nation is called "Ain't Land" and thus it is in the middle of the ocean.

Doybert decides that since he is a stupid Costa Lunian, he needs to visit Saintland to get a good grade on this project or he is going to fail first grade for the 12th straight year. He therefore decides to "borrow" a yacht from his rich neighbors, the Doynkleburgs, and take it out on the open water to visit "Ain't Land." He tells Mr. Doynkleburg that he needs the boat for a school project and promises to return it undamaged, and Mr. Doynkleburg, being stupid, agrees. Unfortunately, Mrs. Doynkleburg is currently in the residential portion of the yacht, using the galley, because the stove in the Doynkelburgs' house is broken and the repair guy can't be there until tomorrow. However, neither Mr. Doynkleburg nor Doybert realize this, so Doybert kidnaps Mrs. Doynkleburg onto the ocean.

Eventually, Doybert hears a woman's voice from downstairs and sees Mrs. Doynkelburg. However, he becomes convinced that she is really Maria Polus in disguise to help him with his school project. He believes Maria Polus still lives in Saintland and is the late King Paulus' sister since he is convinced they both have the same last name. This would also make her King Petrus' aunt, though he believes King Petrus is named King Prune Juice. So, he asks Mrs. Doynkleburg if he can ask her a couple questions about Saintland for his school project. Unfortunately, Mrs. Doynkleburg is unaware that they are on the open water because she is stupid and decides to get out of the boat to go back into the house. Unfortunately, they are on open water so she drowns.

Eventually, Doybert lands on an island off the coast of Gregory Llama Land. This island is filled with llamas and was the first part of Gregory Llama Land discovered by the explorers, hence the name. Unfortunately, Doybert is convinced that the llamas are Sanctii citizens who have been turned into llamas by the wicked King Prune Juice and that he is now in "Ain't Land." After all, he is surrounded by water so he must be on water. He then talks to the llamas and misinterprets their llama noises for Latin. He then imagines that their llama noises are them telling them that King Prune Juice turned them all into llamas because they failed first grade too many times and then he banished them to this island. He also imagines that a tree is "King Prune Juice" supervising the transfigured llamas. He asks him why he did it and he says "For the evulz. Because I can. And because I hate stupid people."

Doybert is so scared by this last part that he gets back in the Doynkleburgs' boat and heads straight home to Costa Luna. Meanwhile, Mr. Doynkleburg is looking for his wife, who has disappeared, but since he still doesn't realize she was in the boat, and neither does Doybert, they never find out the truth. The next day, the stove repairman comes to the Doynkleburgs' house to fix the stove but blows it up, destroying the house and killing him as well as Mr. Doynkleburg. The stove company made the mistake of sending a Costa Lunian, who is stupid.

Finally, Doybert is giving his presentation in school about Saintland and says that the wicked King Prune Juice turns people into llamas if they fail first grade too many times or are too stupid. Also, he says that Saintland is evil. Since everyone knows that Saintland is evil, including stupid Costa Lunians, Doybert gets an A+ and passes first grade on the 12th attempt. He then goes home to Doybert's mother who congratulates her son on only taking 12 tries to pass first grade. Doybert's Mother says that she needed 23 tries. Then Doybert's Mother throws him a graduation party because apparently Costa Lunian education only goes up to first grade because nobody is smart enough to teach at a higher level. But Doybert thinks the cake was cursed by King Prune Juice to turn him into a llama if he ate it, so he runs away crying as the episode ends.

Forthhanu vs Wolfbenz Series Preview

After Wolfbenz was swept by the Kytler Peninsulae, thanks to a lackluster pitching game by Väinö Albrektsson and phenomenal game by star player JJ Justice, hitting four home runs in the series (including one grand slam in the third match), the Dire Wolves morale sinks lower and lower, currently standing in fifth place in the group, ahead of only Forthhanu, who we play at home next.

Speaking of Forthhanu, they are the only team in the group to not win a game, and recently have been swept by Mochira, who are currently third in the group.

Although the Dire Wolves are having a spell of poor performances, Forthhanu has had a poorer one, losing their most recent game 9-0 and have only four runs in in six games. The fact that we play at home will probably intimidate them, being a long ways away from home and playing against a team with wild sports fans, although only 40% of them know what the rules are.

The prediction: Wolfbenz will most likely win two or all three games against Forthhanu, but the team must be careful about underestimating the opposition, as a loss could make progressing more difficult with the upcoming matches against Morchira and Nova Angelicana.

Tickets have been sold out for the Wolfbenz vs. Forthhanu game at the Royal Wolfbenz Stadium in Lobau, the only city in Wolfbenz willing to build a baseball specific stadium. To get tickets for the Wolfbenz vs. Nova Angelcana, click on the link below.

"Fitch set to make his second start of the tournament! Against only our second opponents!"

"I've already told you how I feel about the setup, but in case anybody out there wasn't listening last time around--"

"Fitch of course took the loss in the first game against Saintland. What can we expect tonight?"

"Well, Osbourne will be rested after yesterday's game, Kate Trant-Ling set to make the start instead. She'll be batting eighth, after Huber-Nieves, today."

"Indeed, and again the longer group stage is going to force Saunder-Doin to have to rest more of the players. If any injuries come up, Zwangzug could be in trouble."

"To be fair. We've already won more games than we did all last tournament?"

"To be fair, there will be over three times as many of those games?"

"Okay, so, a sweep of Paymina puts us at 4-2, not a bad place to be. Even a split of the next two would leave us at the .500 mark."

"Right. For the visitors, we have...hmm. Maybe the fifth man or entity in their rotation? Just about the same players who took the field yesterday, for what it's worth."

"Here's the delivery from Fitch--and away we go! Swung on for a strike to begin the game."

"Good crowd here at the Worm Hole, even for the second game of this three-game set."

"This one's fouled away, oh and two."

"Do you think they'll ever consider moving the games elsewhere, like the football team does?"

"This will be grounded to second...fielded by Neigo-Dukawa, flips to first for the out. Also, no. We're the Zebras, we play in the Worm Hole, it's what we do."

"It's what the Worms do."

"It's tradition! This old, historic stadium, which is still kind of a futuristic dome in its own weird little way. Second batter due up, this guy, uh...may have gotten a double yesterday but whatever."

"Went one for four, with a double, actually."

"Cool. Taken for a ball, just outside..."

Sey-no-Mour! Eric Seymour's WBC Blog

We'd absolutely wrecked Itanpavia at home, scoring twenty-eight runs in three games (nine a game!!!) and conceding only one, in the eighth inning of the rubber game, when their second baseman had smacked a two-out double into straightaway center. As we moved to the second series of the tournament, three games on the road in Jachaelter. Once again, we were up against unranked competition, but this time we had a sense of the Jack Rabbits' strength and weaknesses: at the sixth International Baseball Slam in Noburu Taiyou, they'd apparently entered, finishing last in Group Eight, which featured unconvincing heavyweights like New Wolfopolis, sending in a high school team, a young Diegstra squad, and the wild cards Taxachusetts and Vyktory. The offense hadn't been bad, scoring four runs a game, but the defense just hadn't been up to it. They might be able to pull out some wins against worse offensive clubs.

Against the world's best? They were screwed, especially since we were coming off of three routs against Itanpavia and they had a player named "Nip Ole", causing us to debate at great lengths over what poor Nip's parents were smoking when he was born.

The plane landed in Jachaelter, and we walked out, hoping to make it six and oh after the first two series.

The first game was brilliant. The young Josva Reynolds (no relation to all-star reliever Tomás Reynolds) was on top of his game, throwing seeds and pounding down and away with every pitch. Not even Jacob Hunter, by all accounts a six-foot tall three-sport pro star at thirteen, could do anything against Reynolds, striking out in two times at bat. Reynolds had allowed a single hit, Puss's bloop single into shallow left (seriously, Aaron?) in the second, in the first six innings. Phenomenal.

Meanwhile, the offense got to work early, Z Quelcch (what is it with Jachaelter and drugs?) looking worse than Noe Booker against Levivanian youth. Quelcch's velocity and command both seemed off, and although the J-League might've been more forgiving, the Tigers' reaction was to pound him into submission. Alex Kirk lead off with a scorcher down the right-field line for a triple, Megan Peterson smacked a hanging curve into left-center for an RBI double, and Jake Earnest sat on a fastball, and, getting it with a 2-1 count, pounced, crushing a 420-foot home run into straightaway center. Three-nothing after eight pitches. Jachaelter pulling an upset, the pundits were saying? Not bloody likely.

I was up next, looking to right a very wrong-looking two-for-fourteen from the Itanpavia series. The bases were empty, but I wasn't fazed. Quelcch tried desperately to throw better, but his next offering was BP - eighty-nine miles an hour, waist-high. Four seventeen into left field. Four-nothing. Michael and Troy both gutted out singles off surprisingly tough sliders, looping the pitches into left and left-center. James LaRoi cleaned up with a rocket down the left-field line, and we were up six-nothing with no outs in the first. Quelcch finally managed to induce a 6-3 groundout off Reynolds, whereupon he was unceremoniously removed for Doip to loud boos with a 162.00 ERA. Doip, a fresher arm, fared better in the low-pressure scenario, whiffing Alex Kirk (who was displeased, the shattered bat proved) and, in a stroke of luck, forcing Megan Peterson to smash her line drive down the right-field line, where Jacob Hunter managed a web-gem grab.

But it was too late, for by the time the hapless rabbits managed a run off poor Nip, who was the subject of many a bad pun, pinch-hitting for Eff and singling in a run, it was the eighth inning, and we were already up eight-nothing on a two-run blast by LaRoi in the third. Doip had been removed after 2.2 innings with two earned, and the confusingly-dubbed Plolo, who's first name possessed consecutive ßs, managed only one inning in which he walked the bases full. Puelch, finally, was the right pick, shutting out the Tigers over four innings and exhausting himself in the process.

The Jachaleter pitchers, we concluded after the game to party music, were not very good.

Game two finished where game one began, the two teams actually managing to shut each other out and avoid something like The Royal Barangay's twenty-run drubbing of Republic Singapore. Ace AJ Rondout was dominant, just like in his first start, while Gugg Chloyy managed a heroic performance to help the bullpen rest, with his trademark knuckleball confusing the heck out of the Tigers. It was nil-nil after five innings, and both sides were getting restless with six hits combined in the game.

Jachaelter looked to get on the board first in the bottom of the seventh after Chloyy's butterflies screwed with our timing for yet another inning. There was a light at the end of the tunnel - Chloyy had thrown one hundred and twenty-one already and was unlikely to throw too many more. But when, with one out, Vistche tripled and Clicc and Nolp both drew walks, bringing the prodigy thirteen-year-old Jacob Hunter to the plate with the bags full, things were beginning to look grim.

I heard the meeting between Thom Yaft, the pitching coach, and AJ Rondout.

"Can you face Hunter?"

"Of course."

"I'm not entirely sure. The bags are full and we don't want to take a risk."

"To face a thirteen year old? I'm fine."

"We've got Jacob Lin warming up. I think you should come off the mound. Don't want to risk anything, 'specially since you're at a hundred n' nineteen pitches."

"Just let me finish the inning. If I let Hunter reach base, I'll record myself singing."

"Hmm..." Yaft seemed to consider this for a few minutes. "Deal. As long as you post it onto YouTube."

"Fine." Hunter stepped cockily into the box. Rondout stared at him for a few seconds, then struck him out on three slurves.

Chloyy was tiring and the knuckleball wasn't as great. With the bases loaded in the ninth, Trabajen and Adrian, hardly likely candidates, went back-to-back. Five-nil, game two over. At this point, it was no longer a thought - we knew with a conviction that Jachaelter sucked.

Heh.

Things had started pretty well. Drew Gilson had struck out ten in the first four innings, and an RBI single by yours truly had given us the one-nothing lead. This went on for a few innings, and in the eighth inning, when Bobby Fritz trotted out to retire the side, we were still up one-nothing. Fritz walked the first batter, whereupon the runner stayed there as he K'ed the next two. Jacob Hunter was the third.

I guess he was still pretty peeved about striking out with the bases loaded the day before, because when he latched on to it, only his second hit of the series, it flew four hundred feet. Bobby was greeted in the clubhouse by a serenade of sarcasm. He did not look pleased at being taken deep by someone a year removed from his growth spurt.

Aside from pissing off Fritz to the max, the home run also meant, although he finished the inning, the Tigers were down 2-1 to bloody Jachaelter in the ninth inning. On the bright side, we had Earnest, me, and Trabajen up. On the not-so-bright side, the former two struck out and the later whiffed on a 0-2 pitch.

Except the catcher dropped it. A shocked Trabajen somehow ran to first ahead of the throw of the even more shocked catcher, and we were still alive.

Naturally, the rattled closer hit Troy Adrian with the next pitch, bringing up Aaron Baxter with two outs and two men on.

Given the quality of the Llamanean offense, I don't see why everyone was so surprised when he deposited the first pitch into the left-field bleachers. Four-two, which is what the final tally was.

Bring on the challenges. Six games, only one or two of them close, and I'm bored already.

A Disappointing Turn of Events for The First Two Series of The WBC 31

First an unexpected 2-1 series loss against Russian Soviet Socialist States, then a 3-0 series loss against The Fair Republic. The spirit of the Ideosian fans hasn't been affected much it seems, a large crowd gathering already at Haihagen Square in the Capital to watch the game against Brenicia. The coach of the team spoke to us and said: "The team has to forget the previous two games and focus on the rest of the tournament. I think we've done well in the two series so far, and just need to capitalize on our strengths and watch our weaknesses. The two teams we've played so far have had some great play-makers and we missed some opportunites against both. We're focusing on the next game, and hope we can bring a victory." The team will need to win this game tonight, if it wants to raise national spirit to power the team toward the next round.

Hessen Disappoint So Far, Change Is Needed

The Hessen recently played against the two teams they would theoretically be competing against for the last advancing spot, namely thy were Milchama and Imota. Something is not working, there is no doubt about that, but what in specific is it? Could it be inconsistency? A faulty bullpen? Perhaps a malfunctioning offense? A combination? Whatever it is, it must be repaired quickly.

Nassau 2 - 5 Milchama

This game wasn't all that bad, but it definitely can't be called a good game for the Hessen. Milchama found a way to score three runs on Leonardo Juarez in seven innings through a sacrifice and two on a ground rule double (not bad, but it ultimately gave away the win). Victor Casfeld drove in both himself and Mac Dougal with a homer in the sixth to pull it within one. It was Rick Chalmers who not once, but twice threw a wild pitch to let a run score in the eighth inning. The final, 5-2 bad guys.

Nassau 2 - 3 Milchama

This game essentially continued the woes of closing for the Eagles. Derek Kersee had a remarkably good game, restraining Milchama to one run for his six innings of play. Nassau scored twice in the fourth through a single by Prosser, a triple by Casfeld, and deep sacrifice fly by Barrios to take the lead, the Hessen ended up with nine total hits. Burgeone did his job of sustaining the lead well, and he soon passed the reins to Chalmers. Chalmers, with one out and nobody on base in the ninth, gave up a walk-off double with two outs, letting the team down yet again.

Nassau 6 - 4 Milchama

The Nassauites had to win if they wanted to avoid being swept and put at a bit of a disadvantage only three games in. Cody Hartley was on the mound for Nassau, making his debut in the Classic. He did fairly well silencing the bats considering how run hungry both teams were. He only gave up a solo HR, an RBI double, and a close RBI single that could've been called out at the base for a whopping eight whole innings. The Nassauite bats found their mark and the Hessen finally scored more than two runs. Two home runs that scored two runs each (one by Mac Dougal, the other by Charles Trent) worked to the benefit of the Eagles, who capped off their scoring with a rather long single hit by Tobias Viola that drove home two in the eighth, making the total number of Hessian hits twelve. Rick Chalmers, who tanked in the past two games, was given yet another chance as he replaced Kersee, only to load the bases and let a run score. Lefthander Otto Hainsey was given a chance after Chalmers was yanked, two strikeouts later, the Hessians scavenged their first victory.

Imota 2 - 7 Nassau

The Nassau Eagles and the Imota Sunwings (co-host of the competition) met in the respective Nassauite zone of battle, namely, Arima Field. The starting pitchers were Arnold Carpuccio (who struggled in the International Baseball Slam) and Haruki Saegusa of Imota. The game, in every sense, was Nassau taking advantage of Imotas sloppiness/errors. In one sense, one must give credit to Nassau to be able to take advantage of something, but on the other hand, Imota didn't play well. Three home runs were hit, twice by Mac Dougal and once by Casfeld (who is having quite a good tournament thus far). Saegusa only lasted a mere six innings, giving up four total runs. Carpuccio was pulled in the seventh once he filled the bases and gave up a run with only one out. Frank Burgeone took over and managed to end the inning with only letting in one run (the Sunwings run-scorers were Sakaharu Takamori & Kantarou Futaki). The Hessen finished off the Imotans with the second home run by Mac Dougal that followed an RBI single by Ryan Rosario in the eighth. Otto Hainsey delivered the save once again.

Imota 6 - 0 Nassau

Masayuki Minase was the starting pitcher for the Sunwings, and proved to be quite a potent pitcher. There is not much to talk about on the side of Nassau. The pitcher for the Hessen, Levy Bowdith, predictably faltered. He ended up conceding all six scored runs to Imota as he pitched seven innings of what would become a whopping fourteen hit night for the Imotans. The Sunwings kept the Hessian bats relatively quiet, a half disappointing sign from Nassau and a half positive sign for Imotas Minase. Although the bats were quiet, many Hessen found themselves stranded on base through walks or one of the six total hits. Six people ended up left on base, an unreasonable statistic. Eventually, Minase impressively finished a complete game shutout.

Imota 5 - 0 Nassau

Makoto Kikuchi took the mound against Leonardo Juarez in what would become a pitchers battle. Both pitchers were nearly flawless going into the fourth, only letting two people get on base. It was in the fourth where Juarez ran into some problems at the top of the order. Four runs and one complete rotation later, Juarez found himself hanging his head in the dugout. He lasted one more inning before he finally succumbed to his exhaustion. After a short inning pitched by Duensch, Grant Chambers was given two innings and pitched rather well, only giving up an isolated solo HR in the seventh hit by the knowledgable Yuzuki Shimizu. The Sunwings roughly doubled the amount of Nassauite hits with nine (six in the fourth) opposed to the Eagles' mere four. The final score read five to nil in favor of the Imotans.

The Blue and Gold continue their home-stand with a series against the untangled Bissonian national team. A swift sweep is expected of this series, any less will most likely put the Hessen in a deeper hole. Can the hot Mac Dougal and Casfeld lead their team to the coveted second spot? Or will they sink deeper into the standings abyss? Only time will tell.

Part One

Payday, Part 2

Unknown alley
Releinthi, Abanhfleft

"You wanted to see me, Lexie?"

"Yeah, Nel, listen," Alexandra replied, "Justin, Dylan, and Jack wanted me to tell you to come over to see the testing of the special equipment. Says they want you to see how effective it is firsthand."

"Yeah, but why here, in some dirty-ass alley in Pratelna District?" Cornelius asked once again. "Don't they think that some random cop on foot might stumble upon us here?"

"Nobody said anything about a demonstration right here in this, to use your words, dirty-ass alley." Alexandra reached out for a steel door near where she and Cornelius had been conversing, and opened it. "Come on, they're not gonna wait forever," she told Cornelius. The black man sighed and followed the Latina into whatever was inside the brick building.

"Surprise, surprise, motherfucker," a voice cried out from the darkness. "It's the Army Lieutenant, coming to get his things from his subordinates."

"Oh, come off of that bullshit about the army and the navy, Justin; it don't suit you very well," Cornelius said back.

Three men stepped out of the shadows of the abandoned building. They were indeed Justin, Dylan, and Jack, and they were all related to the conspirators in one way or another. Justin was Alexandra's older brother; Dylan was Allison's boyfriend; and Jack was Destiny's older brother. All of them had served their mandatory four years in the Navy, and during a skirmish in Abanhfleft's Fhulghamous Peninsula Colony, their ship had been struck by a missile, and the three of them had been forced to swim for shore. Luckily, the shore they swam to was held by the Fleftic Army; specifically, by a young Army lieutenant named Cornelius. After the "war" was over, the four of them had stayed in touch, mostly because Cornelius already knew Alexandra, Allison, and Destiny, and it was just a simple matter of coming over for drinks and reminiscing.

"Always good to see y'all, guys," Cornelius said as the four men shook hands, and then they let loose all inhibitions and wrapped each other in bear hugs.

"Looks like you're planning on some heavy-duty theft shit," Justin said once they'd all disengaged from the collective bear hug. "That stuff you asked for is industrial shit. I had to steal parts from an old bike factory just to put this thing together."

"What are you planning to drill through with this, anyway? A safe?" Jack asked. They'd all had suspicions about what the others were planning to do, but now that they were all there, he was hoping that someone would finally clear up everything.

"More than just a safe, Jack," Cornelius said. "We're gonna use that thing to get into an honest-to-goodness bank safe."

"Knew it," Dylan said to Jack and Justin. "I knew it. You two owe me twenty penenks."

"All right, now that we've established that we're gonna rob a bank, you said that you wanted to demonstrate the special equipment for us?" Cornelius asked.

"Follow me." Justin took the others deeper into the abandoned building, right into a large empty space. A big, complicated apparatus was sitting right in the middle of the empty space, alongside a big black metal safe, the type used by banks.

"We made some test runs on the thermal drill before you came over here," Justin said, "and as far as we can tell, you'll need at least six minutes to drill through just the basic safe. It gets exponentially longer the more advanced the safe is."

"I don't think that's a problem," Cornelius replied. "The bank we scouted has the simplest fucking safe. The thermal drill will probably cut through it like a knife on butter."

"Yeah, well, we started it up a few minutes before you got here," Dylan said. "Which, according to my watch, was five minutes ago. Should be ready to pop in a minute's time."

Then came a loud whirring and banging noise from the thermal drill. "Ah, shit," Dylan muttered. "That's yet another thing about our drill. It jams, and very often. So the six minutes is only for the actual drilling. When--and not if--you have to unjam it or something, it will take you much, much longer to drill through the safe than six minutes."

"Good to know," Cornelius muttered.

After Dylan had smacked the thermal drill back to life with healthy whackings of a crude stick, the drill continued on its work, while Cornelius and Alexandra went over the heist plan once again. They were careful not to let too much of the plot be heard by the other guys, as the risk of discovery after doing the deed was very high, and they didn't want to get caught just because someone's brother or boyfriend overheard the plot.

The drill finally whirred into silence. "Did it jam again?" Cornelius asked.

"Oh, no," Justin replied. "This time it's done. As in actually done drilling."

"Oh, really? Let's see the results."

Justin, Dylan, and Jack all worked together to remove the drill from the safe's door. There was a large, smooth hole right where the drill bit had been, and it had disengaged the safe's locking mechanism to an extent that it was now free to swing around as it pleased.

"Oh, that's very good," Cornelius muttered.

"Up to your very high standards, Nel?" Alexandra asked him.

"Definitely. All right. Now show me how to pack this into a gym bag, and then how to put it back together again."

The Imota Professional Baseball League (IPBL) Official Website: Your WBC 31 Headquarters!

Two Forward, One Back: Sunwings Take Two from Estenia (http://ipbl.im/wbc31/3)

The Sunwings continue their trend of doing well but not perfect, taking two out of three in their home opener against first-timer Estenia. This puts Imota (6-3) in second place in the group and Estenia (2-7) in fifth.

Game 1: Estenia 0, Imota 3
Sakuya Izayoi allowed just four hits in seven innings, never allowing the Estenians to even touch third base. Meanwhile, credit must be given to Konstantin Vasilyev, who threw six impressive innings of one-hit, ten K ball, before allowing Kantarou Futaki to knock in a three run homer in the seventh.

Game 2: Estenia 6, Imota 4
The Estenians appeared to have regained their bearings, leading the ‘Wings wire to wire. Nozomi Itoshiki allowed three stolen bases and gave up six runs in as many innings. Meanwhile, Yasha Matveev held the ‘Wings to one run over seven brilliant innings, and despite making Georgiy Lagounov pay for several poorly placed pitches, the bats simply could not fill the hole.

Game 3: Estenia 0, Imota 6
The Sunwings’ pitchers went back to dominating this time. Haruki Saegusa’s slider and curveball kept the Estenians swinging at air for six and two thirds, allowing just three hits, and Wakaba Saegsa’s four-seamers kept the Estenians off the bags for the rest of the game. Meanwhile, the otherwise light-hitting Tsubasa Araragi and Yuzuki Shimizu each contributed two RBI, including a solo homer for Shimizu in the fifth.

Overall, the group is starting to divide itself into distinct subgroups: Jeckand (9-0) dominates the group, Imota (6-3) Nassau-Hessen (5-4) and Milchama (4-5) are battling for the second playoff spot, while unranked Estenia (2-7) and Bissone (1-8) are the group’s whipping boys.

The next item of Imota’s agenda is a road date with Milchama, who are just coming off a sweep at the hands of Jeckland. This is a golden opportunity to put some ground between the teams. Masayuki Minase, Makoto Kikuchi, and Sakuya Izayoi will start.

Toucans Sweep Gregoryisgodistan and Ideos, Improve to 9-0

Postby The Fair Republic » Tue Aug 26, 2014 12:55 pm

Hi, this is Arlan Root here with the post series analysis of both the Ideos and Gregoryisgodistan series.

Ideos Game 1:
The Kualathi were not intimidated by the Toucans. They swung the bats often and early accumulating ten hits and 3 runs in the first 6 innings, all pitched by Leigh Phillips. The 25 year old showed great maturity working himself out of pitching jams and giving the Toucans a chance to come back in the game. When the bases were loaded with 2 outs in the 5 and the Toucans already behind 3-0 thanks to a three run shot by Maddie Marquette in the 2nd inning. Thankfully Phillips was able to strike out Jennifer Lega to end the inning. A 2 run double by Gary Payton tied the game up at 2 in the 6th and a 2 run shot by Larry Donaldson gave the Toucans the lead. Scooter Jamison struck out the side in the 9th to give the Toucans the 4-3 victory

Ideos Game 2:
After escaping with a win the first game, the Toucans came out swinging. Harry Liddi lead off the ballgame with a solo shot to left followed by a single and double by Jaeger and Wilson. After Brando walked to load the bases. Picker struck out on a questionable call it looked outside but a bases clearing double by yesterday's hero Larry Donaldson gave the Toucans a 4-0 lead. Patrick Peterson was solid as always for the Toucans, striking out 5, allowing only 6 hits and 2 runs, one unearned in 7 and 1/3 innings pitched. A two run single by Jarred Holland, scoring Bob Benson and Reggie Picker gave the Toucans the 6-2 lead and put the game out of reach for the Kualathi.

Ideos Game 3:
Buck Natters gave the bullpen a much needed day off tossing a complete game shutout. The 27 year old southpaw struck out 12, walked none and allowed only 2 hits as every Toucan batter got on base in a 9-0 victory. The Toucans pitching was exceptional, as the Kualathi only scored 5 runs during the 3 game series

Gregoryisgodistan Game 1:
The first major challenge for the Toucans was familiar foe. The Bat Slaves knocked out the Toucans in the Round of 16 back in WBC 29 and the Toucans were bent on revenge. A 3 run shot to center by Enemy Crusher Bobby Furgles in the 1st inning did little to help the cause. The ball was blasted 550 feet into the upper deck off a 95 mile per hour fastball by Rodger Harrison on the outside part of the strike zone left the Toucans jaws on the floor in awe. The Toucans weren't able to get a hit until the 4th inning, when James Wilson hit a solo shot to make it a 3-1 ballgame. A 2 run single by Gary Payton in the 7th tied the game at 3 all. A sacrifice fly by Reggie Picker gave the Toucans a 4-3 lead in the 8th and a 2 run double by Orville Jaeger gave the Toucans a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth where. Scooter Jamison got his third save of the WBC and the victory for the Toucans.

Gregoryisgodistan Game 2:
This one is going down in the ages as one of the best games in an already classic match up between the Bat Slaves and the Toucans. Reminiscent of Game 2 of the WBC 29 match up between these two teams when the Toucans down by 2 in the bottom of the 11th facing elimination stormed back for a 4 run bottom half of the inning to win the ball game. This was a close game from the start. Every move the Toucans made was followed by another move by the Bat Slaves. 1-0, 2-1, 2-2, 3-2, 3-3, the latter result coming of a home run by Barber LIEUIUSH with two outs in the bottom of the 9th off Scooter Jamison. The teams remained deadlocked until the 14th inning when with Larry Donaldson on 2nd base with 2 outs, Jarred Holland hit a groundball to Grammar Enforcement Officer CUPSI19291 at 3rd base. The ball went under his glove, between his legs rolling to shallow left allowing Donaldson to score on what should have been a routine play. Ron Henderson got the win and Cedric Cox got his first career save as the Toucans won 4-3 in an absolute classic.

Gregoryisgodistan Game 3:
After the 6 hour 37 minute marathon of the previous day, both teams looked sluggish. The Toucans made errors on routine plays and the Bat Slaves weren't able to capitalize and held a slim 2-1 heading into the 6th inning. That's when things went south for the Bat Slaves. Henry Brando hit a grand slam to give the Toucans a 5-2 lead. Brando later hit another homer, this one a solo shot off the foul pole in right in the 9th to give the Toucans a 6-2 lead and a series sweep.

Next Series: Brenecia (40)
The Flock has been a surprise so far in the WBC. Going 7-2 is no easy feat. The Pitching is fantastic only allowing 16 runs so far. That's less run allowed than The Royal Barangay, Vaugania, Nova Anglicana and Your Toucans. All top 10 teams! However seeing that The Flock struggled against Gregoryisgodistan going 1-2 shows that they can be rattled when facing higher level competition. Also the runs allowed number is inflated due to playing Russian Soviet Socialist States and Guerro both outranked teams. In conclusion the Toucans can beat Brenecia but if they lose focus they could find themselves 9 and 3 in an blink of an eye.

Sister Polus's Thoughts

Hello, I am Sister Maria Polus of St. Hermione's Convent in Acedonia and I am joining you today to discuss some recent events. As more and more nations embrace the True Church of Iesus Christus every day, the Millennial Kingdom is fast approaching. We can see the Will of God in the ongoing rise of His Church to international prominence, for we serve His Will, not some temporal master. That is why those of us who know the Truth of Iesus Christus care not for the things of this temporary plane of existence, but rather for the things of that permanent plane of existence that we know as Caelum.

I shall start with the Saintland National Baseball Team. As you probably know, this team is comprised of some of the best baseball players from around the multiverse who are members of the True Church. They play, not for themselves and certainly not for King Petrus the Timid, but for the Greater Glory of the One True God. Most recently, they defeated those abominations from the Equestrian States 2 out of 3 times to take undisputed possession of first place in their group. While the first game was forgettable, the second and third games were anything but. Over the course of 2 legendary games, Flavian Gatsioudis and Reegan Scott pitched consecutive complete games, allowing just 5 hits between them, along with a total of 3 walks. However, they struck out a total of 31 talking horses over the course of 18 innings of work, which is fitting since this is the 31st edition of the World Baseball Classic. The third and final game ended in thrilling fashion with a 3-run walkoff home run by Petrus Tragus, who has found a power stroke ever since he re-dedicated himself to God, following WBC 28 late last year.

However, another major story at the moment involves a certain nation whose very name is blasphemous (OOC: Gregoryisgodistan). They have, once again, aired another episode of their outrageously false television program about the nation of Costa Luna. However, this time, they were not content to just lie about Costa Luna. Instead, they decided to spread lies about the Kingdom of Saintland. In the past, this notorious program has portrayed the Late, Great King Paulus XV as a lighthouse. The most recent episode of the program spreads lies most malicious about yours truly. They portray me as the sister of King Paulus the Great and aunt of King Petrus the Useless, who is referred to on the program as "King Prune Juice," referring to some especially disgusting drink that they sell in that wicked nation. I am appalled by this and I call upon the nations of the multiverse to ban this maliciously false and hateful television program!

It has also come to my attention that the same nation that broadcast such falsehoods about myself has committed a heinous attack on the king of another reprehensible nation at the currently ongoing Summer Olympics. This is why it was a wise decision for all of the nations from the Alliance of God to stay out of the Olympics this year. Until that evil man who pretends to be God is sent to the fires of Infernus where he belongs, the multiverse will not be safe from those barbarians. I can only pray that somebody sends him to his Maker soon. I am Sister Maria Polus and I thank you for watching.

Epic Quest Five: In which the entire contents of a chapter are leaked in the title

Wolfie rang his own doorbell. It'd been a tiring day, and upon coming home he was shocked to discover that somebody had locked his door. Inside, Llama was slumped on the couch, listening to his stomach revolt after he'd vomited up the three-month old tuna. The doorbell was lost to him, but using a large screwdriver he had found in his pocket - a side effect of improbability fields, was, to the shock of all, improbable things occurring - he managed to get the door open by himself.

"Llama! Er...aren't you supposed to be dead or something?"

Llama was pale and didn't look that great, but he was sitting on a couch watching UICA Live while doing lively things like breathing, talking, and vomiting, Wolfie noting the latter annoyedly.

"Ugh...going to take me hours to get that off the carpet," he said to himself.

"Hey Wolfie, what's up?"

"Well, Margaret's dead."

"Good to hear. Is there any tea around here?" Wolfie, still in shock, made to boil water. "Hold it on the tea for a second. What do we do now? Where's the hosting cup?"

"Lost. They're giving it to us anyways despite Taiyou's offer to scuba dive for it."

"Do we host now?"

"I think so."

"What happened to Greg?"

"I don't know."

"What about the dracons, or, heck, the entire other dimension we just vacated for no good reason?" Llama was getting worked up now.

"I don't-"

Both suddenly looked to the teakettle, which had boiled over. "I'll get it," Wolfie said.

Blog of the Tiger : Your Number-one Spot for Llamanean NT News!
Undefeatable : Llamaneans Sweep Western Cuba, Reynolds Near-Perfect

Another series, another sweep: Super-Llamaland shows no signs of slowing after they rattled off three straight victories over Western Cuba, and at 9-0 with only Diegstra and Mapletish in the way of an undefeated first half, things are looking good.

With the victories over second-place Western Cuba, before the series on a six-game streak of their own, the Tigers have taken undisputed possession of first place by three games.

Game One

While the Tigers got up early with an Eric Seymour solo shot in the first inning, Western Cuba showed no signs of letting up, getting the run back on a one-out triple to right off of the widely acclaimed lefty Brittany Hendrickson. Hendrickson walked the next batter but got out of it, using some well-placed fastballs to induce a double play.

It was in the seventh inning off an unidentified lefty reliever when the Tigers got back in front. A pair of singles by Baxter and Hendrickson put runners on the corners with one away, and Alex Kirk stroked a double into the left-center gap, giving the Tigers the lead. A pair of two-out base hits from Seymour and Trabajen made it five-one, and while the Western Cuba team got a run back off Brennaman in the eighth, the Tigers pulled out a seventh straight victory regardless.

W - Hendrickson (2 - 0, 1.29 ERA), SV - Lin (1)

Game Two

Josva Reynolds was absolutely brilliant, allowing no hits over his first seven innings and only walking one batter. His pitches were perfectly placed and his fastball hit ninety-four for the first time in two years, to mention nothing of his dominant slider that he used to strike out eleven batters. The offense, meanwhile, jumped on the board early, scoring six in the third inning by virtue of seven straight one-out hits.

Jake Earnest, after getting hits in his first four at-bats (home run, double, single, double, four RBIs), however, was removed in the eighth after a terrifying slide into the wall while trying to catch a foul pop fly. Earnest was taken out immediately with "knee issues" and was subbed out for Emily Pierce, making us wonder how the team will fare without their best player.

Reynolds seemed shaken, giving up a two-out single in the eighth but finishing off a complete-game two-hitter, striking out the side in the ninth. While the Arendellenske seemed fatigued after throwing over 120 pitches, he still marathoned through one of the best pitching performances in Llamanean history, almost as good as Drew Gilson's playoff series no-hitter against Mosktopia at the fifth International Baseball Slam and certainly comparable to Brittany Hendrickson's spot start to clinch the finals just under four years ago. The Tigers wrapped up the game with another run in the ninth, and Reynolds was mobbed in the clubhouse after the final strikeout.

W - Reynolds (2 - 0, 0.60 ERA)

Game Three

Just as good as the first two pitching-wise, game three featured AJ Rondout at his finest. After giving up a home run in the first inning, Rondout retired twenty-two consecutive batters before he gave up a double to the opposing second baseman in the last of the eighth, striking out seven on an efficient 122 pitches. Still, the offense remained silent until the late stages of the game, where two singles and a walk set up an eighth-inning grand slam off the bat of Alex Kirk.

Emily Pierce remained in the lineup, which was modified to look like so:

CF Peterson
2B Kirk
1B LaRoi
LF Seymour

But even without Earnest the offense looked decent enough despite only scoring on the aforementioned Kirk slam.

The team travels next to Diegstra, their toughest test yet. It'll be Gilson, Hendrickson, and Reynolds of the Tigers facing Meltman, Clausehitz, and Ramstein for the Knights. You won't want to miss it abroad in Diegstra or live on Llamanean Sports Network!

World Baseball Classic 31 (Everything Thread)

The Kolbenz Times

Wolfian Sponsors Request Investegation of Forthhanu vs. Wolfbenz Series

BetCo., Wolfbenz's most promenent gambling company, has requested match investigations of the Dire Wolves' last three matches, which some believe that was fixed by underground gangs in Wolfbenz, specifically the Wolfian Mafia.

Match fixing is rare in Wolfbenz, and offenders are delt with swiftly and harshly. Some believe in the conspiracy, but others think that they're angry because Wolfbenz lost and fans are acting like sore loosers.

The series against Forthhanu produced only one win for the Wolves, currently placing at rock bottom in their group. It would be lying if we didn't say the Forthhanans played quite well, but some of the Wolfian players were off their game, such as closing pitcher Andrus Simen walking four players in the first game of the Series, or Left Fielder Lukas Vang committing careless (or carefully planned) errors when the ball was hit to him.

Pontus Ottoson commented on the accusations of match fixing earlier today.

"I was not involved with any match fixing, and I doubt that some of our players took bribes to play poorly, but if any of them were, they will face immediate expulsion from the team and will not play for us come next World Baseball Classic."

The other coaches and players refused to comment.

To report anonymous tips regarding the possible match fixing, go to http://bundespolizilobau.wb/fourthhanuwolbenzmatchfixingcase

Not an attack or criticism on Forthhanu and/or the match results. I just thought this would be a fun little thing to do.

Epic Quest Two: It could be worse, you could be in Hufflepuff

Six

"All I'm saying is, do we actually know they have the cup?"

Jeck sat on the couch in his apartment. Although the presence of a goddess in his apartment was ever so slightly perculiar, he was beginning to come to terms with the constant sensation of utter insignificance he felt in her presence, for he was an utter nobody compared to her.

Margaret considered his quesiton "How would they not have the cup?"

"Well you were talking about emitting randomness, which caused you to get here."

"True Jeck, true. But this is the cup they sought, they would not be so careless to let it slip from them in a wave of randomness and end up in, I don't know, a landfill with your overripe tuna."

"DON'T MENTION THE TUNA!" said Jeck, a tear coming to his eye.

"I think that it may be time to do a little research."

"And I know just the place." said Jeck. He grabbed his keys and headed towards the door.

"Where are you going?" said Margaret.

"To buy a paper, duh" said Jeck.

Jeck walked along the Esportivan street. It was a nice day, he thought, seeing the sun reflect of a discarded crisp packet. He turned left and walked into a small newsagents. A note on the counter read "Gone for lunch - Back in 10". But Jeck knew that Margaret wouldn't wait for him. He pulled a few coins from his pocket, then put them on the counter before picking up La Gazetta della Esportiva. He glanced quickly at the headline on the front page, then dashed out of the newsagents and back towards his apartment.

"CURSES" said Margaret, having heard the news.

"It's not so bad. If our plan works, we get the Cup anyway."

"Indeed. We need to make sure that this is an effecient and inconspicous looking job. Are you ready?"

Jeck nodded.

"Then let the World Baseball Classic begin." said Margaret in a dark voice.

"...and for the eighteenth time today, a Zebra crosses the plate! Farkas-Kis with yet another home run, and it is an astonishing 18-0, I've never seen anything like it!"

"Not quite."

"You've seen a game like this?"

"It's not really the eighteenth time?"

"We've scored eighteen runs and they haven't scored any? Ball one to Claes, by the way."

"Well, yes. But...do you consider Farkas-Kis crossing the plate to be a separate occasion from Geshnan?"

"I do. They were separated in the temporal continuity. Swung on and missed at a curve, it's one and one."

"But it's the same--I mean, if Geshnan had just collapsed at third..."

"What? Oh, this'll be hit into left-center, Marceli rounding first, that'll be a...standing double for Geshnan. Same old, same old at this rate."

"If Geshnan had collapsed at third, the ball had already cleared the fence, it was a home run. Farkas-Kis could have technically gone home, I think, and they'd just come back later to drag Geshnan across?"

"That's a bit morbid but okay, Snire will foul this one off."

"Once the ball is out of play, it doesn't really matter. So in the sense of keeping score, you know, that abstracted version of events, the scoring of all the runs is kind of the same thing."

"Is this your way of saying that the Zebras have been so offensively-minded today that even one afternoon's runs are blurring together? Fouled to the backstop."

"Sort of. It's different when the ball is in play, you know, and the timing of the third out matters or something? You can score two runs on a play, and have them be separate occasions in the grand scheme of things."

"This'll be hit--into short right, they'll send Geshnan, he'll score without a throw, and I guess it is blurring together even for me. 19-0."

"And remember, folks, this is just the first game of a three-game set!"

"You're not excited about that? Not even a little?"

"Aren't you going to quote some nonsense about how they should save it for the next few days?"

"I wasn't planning on it, do you want to?"

"If I was into that kind of thing I would have said they should have portioned it out for the last couple tournaments. But, I know that isn't actually possible."

"Thanks. Ball one to Rhee."

"For those of you listening to us back home, you know. No matter how runs, or run-occasions--"

"Is this a Saunder-Doin stat?"

"It might be. You're not allowed to redistribute them at will."

"I've seen foreign standings with runs scored and against, in the aggregate, maybe some teams would do better if it was that consistency that was rewarded."

"They're just copying the football, they don't know what they're doing."

"Maybe. Rhee will--connect on this one, back to the wall--Snire is rounding third, still going--twenty-nothing, Zebras!"

"...joining us from Perong with the latest on the Reformed Expos is our international baseball specialist, Shane Larkin-Gladden. Shane, how are the Expos doing so far."

"Great."

"What do you think the biggest problem with the team is right now?"

"Chang Rodriguez's tendency to rely too much on his eephus as a strikeout pitch is probably going to bite him in the ass sooner rather then later."

"And on offense, anything new to report?"

"Apparently Greg Witherpool has been downgraded from having the green light to run to having a 'yellow light' after being thrown out while trying to steal home on a bet in last night's final game against Perong."

"Any truth to the rumors that Archambault Julien and Mark Messenger played a best-of-3 round of high-stakes Rock, Paper, Scissors to determine who got the first chance to call that girl who threw two baseballs with her phone number onto the field before being carted off by security?"

"Matt, I understand that they actually staged a spelling bee, moderated by backup infielder, English Lit major and travelling slam poet Phineas Bagby. Julien won out after seven rounds, correctly spelling 'yclept' while Messenger stumbled over 'ukase.' Still no reports as to whether or not the lady was impressed."

"Shane Larkin-Gladden, with absolutely nothing to complain about for once in his life. Here's hoping it continues. Up next, our analysts stage their 34th mock fantasy draft. Don't you touch that-"

The Imota Professional Baseball League (IPBL) Official Website: Your WBC 31 Headquarters!

On The Other End: Sunwings drop two to Milchama (http://ipbl.im/wbc31/4)

The split series trend continues, but this time, not in our favor: despite doing well in the second game, the Sunwings dropped two to Milchama, allowing them to close the gap to just one game.

Game 1: Imota 0, Milchama 2
A pitching duel defined by strikeouts, few hits, and expert baserunning by the Milchama. Masayuki Minase did remarkably well, holding them to just two runs over six innings. However, Milchama’s starter did even better, allowing just three hits and no runs over seven, while their closer needed just twelve pitches to net the save.

Game 2: Imota 9, Milchama 3
The bats came back for this one, with Kantarou Futaki and Saki Lilienthal driving in three apiece. Makoto Kikuchi again netted a not-quite quality start, giving up three runs over seven innings. (OOC: Imota’s domestic league uses a stricter definition of quality start, which also takes into account WHIP and ERA over the course of the outing.)

Game 3: Imota 4, Milchama 8
While Imota pulled ahead 3-1 early, Sakuya Izayoi had a meltdown in the fifth and allowed six runs to cross the plate. The bats could not catch up, and Milchama ended the series with an 8-4 win.

Despite dropping two out of three, Imota was able to match Milchama in total runs scored, suggesting that the two teams may have been more evenly matched than expected. That Milchama seems to have been remiss in their preparations for the tournament and that Milchama’s fanbase hasn’t generated much stir may also have played a role in the closeness of scoring. Perhaps it was simply bad luck that put Imota in the loss column twice this time. If that is the case, Milchama will need to step up their game if they don’t want to lose next time.

Imota will finish up the first half of the group stage with a home stand against Jeckland, who finally got a taste of defeat against Nassau-Hessen and enter the series with an 11-1 record. Nozomi Itoshiki, Haruki Saegusa, and Masayuki Minase will start.

Independent Baseball Report

Steroid Rumors

One of the biggest surprises of the current edition of the World Baseball Classic is the 10-2 start by the Saintland team, a team that has not competed since WBC 28 and which was a consistent .500 team in previous editions of the tournament. Something seems to be different about this edition of the World Baseball Classic, other than the decision by their King to send a team almost entirely comprised of foreigners to the WBC to represent their nation, a move that arguably should not be allowed by the WBC Council.

Recently, they continued their success in their home series against Paymina. It all started with a 10 run outburst in the first game, on a night when most of the regular Sanctii starting lineup were given the day off. Petrus Iulus had a 6 RBI, 3 home run day and Marcus Tragus put an exclamation point on the Saintland victory with a bottom of the 8th inning grand slam. The second game was a pitchers duel between the respective aces, with Steffen Hirsch throwing 8 innings and conceding just 1 run while striking out 17 batters, continuing the trend of Sanctii pitchers putting out ridiculous strikeout totals on an almost-nightly basis in this tournament. Michalis Kenteris closed it out in the bottom of the 9th by striking out the middle of the Paymina order on just 10 pitches. The 3 Sanctii runs on that night were driven in by Petrus Tragus on a double in the first inning. The Sanctii would leave runners on base in every inning on the night, but would score no more runs. The third game went slightly differently for Saintland. Ellis Cox had control issues on the night, walking 7 players. Paymina took advantage of this, using suicide squeezes to score 3 runs off of Cox despite only 4 hits on the night. The game was tied at 3 going into the bottom of the 8th inning, thanks to a 2-run home run by Aleron Martin and the baserunning exploits of Alex Frith. Frith walked to lead off the bottom of the first and proceeded to steal both second and third bases. Then, after both Ioannes Sentius and Marcus Tragus struck out, he managed to score on a passed ball by the Paymina catcher, whose identity remains a secret at this time. In the bottom of the 8th, Hoshihito Sutoh came in as a pinch hitter, with a runner on first and 2 outs. Sutoh connected on the first pitch that he saw and sent it straight into the wall in right-center field. Both the Paymina center fielder and the Paymina right fielder were out of position, as both Sanctii runners ran furiously along the base paths. Sutoh actually had to slow down to enable Felix Zikos, who had reached base on a 2-out error by the shortstop (on a routine ground ball), to cross home plate without being passed by Sutoh. By the time the ball found its way back to the infield, both runners were heading toward home plate. Paymina's catcher, awaiting a throw from the cutoff man, attempted to block the plate. Zikos just ran right through him, causing the ball to go flying toward the backstop and the umpire signaled that both runners were safe. Paymina's starting catcher left the game with a separated shoulder (OOC: Basically, Zikos ran him over just like Pete Rose ran over Ray Fosse on the final play of the 1970 All Star Game. I'm assuming that this RL rule change has yet to be adopted in the WBC.).

However, while practically every Church of Saintland member will tell you that the Saintland team's success is due to the "Will of God," Independent Baseball Report has learned that, prior to this WBC, large amounts of anabolic steroids and human growth hormone (HGH) were shipped into Saintland from the Holy Republican Empire (formerly Free Republics) where steroid use is widely believed to be rampant among professional athletes (likely the real reason why they do not send all-star teams from their professional leagues into international tournaments). Independent Baseball Report has also learned that the King's Government of Saintland purchased large quantities of certain devices that are designed to beat performance-enhancing drug testing and rumor has it that the King of Saintland personally bribed the WBC Council to refrain from any PED testing of his team.

Put together, it seems that the Saintland National Baseball Team is willing to deliberately and methodically cheat in order to win baseball games at the World Baseball Classic. This is a rather disturbing hypothesis, but one that is supported by overwhelming evidence. Independent Baseball Report calls upon those responsible for upholding the integrity of the World Baseball Classic to investigate the Saintland National Baseball Team. We would suggest that they start by drug-testing the Sanctii pitchers, who seem to be throwing with unbelievable velocity and by drug-testing the Tragus brothers, neither of whom should have that much power, given their past performance. Something just doesn't seem right here...
