Match report posted on the GruenCric website.
Telliflikkiflarknon, Millbank impress in warm-up game

Sprantothan Juffwump was left to sweat comments he made on the first day of Gruenberg's warm-up game against the "Liventian Tigers" reserve side that he expected to win inside three days and spend the extra day at the beach as John Millbank defied his bowlers on a quick, bouncy pitch for 250 deliveries to take the game into the fourth day. Supporters on the fourth morning waved inflatable beach toys and plastic sand shovels at Juffwump, but he was saved from embarrassment by iiPriyuff Uglaxx, whose bounce and seam movement proved too much for the Tigers' middle order.

Juffwump, standing in for Zambuimmi Hengtridan as the GCB rested him and star batsman Benny Enchante for the game - photographs of Enchante visiting a Liventian nightclub made minor headlines while his teammates endured a barrage of fierce bowling from Max Sean Finney made minor headlines - had hoped to gain valuable captaincy experience, but not everyone who saw him marshalling his team was impressed by his decision making. He was reluctant to bowl himself, a problem for all bowler-captains, while his field settings were unimaginative: Tigers keeper Mike Sarrin was especially unsettled by Uglaxx, yet three times he fended looping chances to a short leg position that remained vacant.

The match was never competitive after Azzawozzawoowizzbitz Telliflikkiflarknon struck with his first ball; although Leo Cartwright and Paul Jamieson had put on 58 for the second wicket, Uglaxx returned for a second spell that ran through the Tigers lineup to rout them for 130 before tea. Dervin Yeg - nursing an elbow injury but expected to be cleared for the first Test - was absent, leaving Juffwump to call on reserve pacemen o'Po'o'To'o'So Bant and Cygogetty Rampleponxy. The collapse permitted Gruenberg time to bat, with questions about their lineup looming after a poor series against Darmen for Plopples Hrrrg, Yeepers Naroadnig and Nernoiks Likkilai.

They faced a Tigers bowling lineup with quality seam options, but whose spinners struggled against the capable Gruenberger batsmen. Finney's figures of 1-64 in no way reflected how well he bowled, flustering Pitkin Deisler, who then flashed rashly to reward the arguably less impressive Leo Cartwright at the other end. Hrrrg and Naroadnig both batted with extreme caution, but managed to survive through to the close and on into the next morning. Neither reached fifty, but both demonstrated an ability to deal with the swinging ball, and Naroadnig, whose home vs. away average splits are among the most drastic in world cricket, much improved technique while Hrrrg looked better against the short ball - though he still got out hooking, gloving a leg-side bouncer round to Sarrin.

Thereafter Likkilai and Telliflikkiflarknon took over. While Likkilai was all patient accumulation, knowing he needed to spend significant time in the middle after his failure to take his chances in the Fourth Test against Darmen, Telliflikkiflarknon - promoted to 5 in the absence of the senior middle order - raced to a dazzling 113 ball century. Just his seventh first class century in as many years, it nonetheless proved a reminder of his serious potential to become the all-rounder Gruenberg crave, though as a bowler his five wickets flattered him.

Likkilai's was the less attractive hundred, but for the selectors, the more important one. With Kakuwat Gezzalqin failing and concerns remaining about Spintmhitz Turvuaednes's decline in batting form, Likkilai had to find runs to avoid a middle order chasm. He did so in a vigil of 227 balls, taking Gruenberg from 143-3 to 400-7. While he was tentative against the seamers, he did not get out; by contrast, he was confident in his footwork against the spinners, already cowed by Telliflikkiflarknon's aggressive treatment. He was finally dismissed, edging a tired drive behind, but his 125 was enough to assure his selection for the First Test, meaning an unchanged side will be named.

The Gruenberger innings began the third day nine down, but it was not quite over: the Tigers bowlers were treated to the humiliation of a 50 run tenth wicket stand as notoriously poor batsman Uglaxx swished his way to 33 off 19, hitting the only sixes off the bat. His highest career first class score, it heaped misery on a tired bowling lineup and took the lead past 300 - though as he survived a plumb LBW shout first ball and was dropped twice, he is unlikely to be challenging for the No. 10 spot yet.

The seamers then reduced the Tigers to 26-3, Juffwump's grin growing ever wide: 171 runs later, it was a firmly set frown. AP Gignac and Millbank, loudly cheered on by a group of travelling Moroschwegen fans who had enjoyed his exploits during the GPL, blunted everything Juffwump threw at them. Millbank was initially the aggressor, taking on the left arm seamers while playing Uglaxx cautiously; later on, the slow scoring Gignac began to get moving once the spinners were brought on. They threatened embarrassment for Gruenberg - but Telliflikkiflarknon had Gignac given out LBW, off an inside edge, to a ball that pitched outside off and would have missed leg, and then Uglaxx took the new ball. The rest was over in a blink, leaving only Millbank time to notch his century, warmly applauded by all but a sullen Juffwump.

The match, if anything, simply served to solidify the first XI, and hint at a lack of depth. Gezzalqin failed, neither Bant nor Rampleponxy looked Test standard, and even Juffwump's captaincy was a pale shadow of Hengtridan's. Moreover, the batting lineup without Enchante had little spark, Telliflikkiflarknon's offering having to be tempered by an acknowledgement of his extreme inconsistency and frequent injuries. They will head into the first Test knowing their strongest side - but having learned little about what to do should failures recur.

Correction: An earlier version of this web article identified the Liventian seamer as "Max Finney", not "Sean Finney". The mistake has been changed, and the subeditor exiled to a death camp in the Gelzien Nub along with his entire family.

Chelta vow to defend number two spot ahead of Wray series

The Cheltish Test squad, coming off the back of a close 1-0 series win against The Nihilistic View, have arrived in Wray for a three-match series against the latter.

What will make this series, the first ever contest between the two, particularly interesting and likely more keenly-fought is the two competitors' contest over the second-ranked spot in the GCF Test rankings. Wray recently fell from their number two spot after a 2-1 series loss to Liventia, letting the Cheltish pip them from number three. Wray will probably be looking to retake their second ranking, but Chelta have no intention of giving it up.

"The lads have fought hard to work our way up to number two," said Percy Waight. "Our rise through the rankings is testament to strides we've made as a team in recent times. I think we definitely deserve to be ranked second, and this will be clear for all to see when we play Wray. Our goal is to be ranked number one, so we have every intention of defending this title."

Grant Mason, the Cheltish team coach, said about the upcoming series, "Never mind what Percy said, Wray are a quality team and we will have a tough fight on our hands playing them and successfully defending the second ranked spot. Our top order will be essential to our success against Wray. All our batsmen have been looking good in recent times; I think we have established a solid, well-sculpted top order.

"In the bowling department, Stuart Werren, Harry Donoghue and Alistair May, as always, will be upon whom this side lives or dies. Unfortunately, they've been falling short of their capability recently. Twice in the last series they failed to bowl TNV out and let them take a draw. They can't do that against Wray, and so, rightly, they've been training extra-hard to prepare for this. We have a nuanced and high-quality bowling attack who I have every belief can lead Chelta to victory in this series."

The First Test will be at Cartersburg Oval, supposedly a more batting-friendly wicket. Chelta are expected to play the unchanged lineup they retained throughout the TNV series, although Rupert Madison's place may be in doubt for future Tests unless he begins to consistently deliver.

Chelta XI for First Test v Wray: Walters, Blainey, Macnair, Waight, Sullivan, Madison, Goss, Donoghue, Birt, May, Werren.

Bowling order: Birt, Werren, Donoghue, May, Madison, Sullivan (p/t), Waight (p/t).

Darmen Looks to Turn Things Around at Home
-Veit Samuel

SCOTT CITY - Matthew Johnson was powerless to stop Darmen's massive loss to Gruenberg in the final match of the four match series between the two nations. Darmen would lose the series overall 3-1, and will now need to turn things around in a two match series against Nexxus Drako.
Match One vs. Nexxus Drako @ Capital Oval
Capacity: 15,000 | Club: Scott City CC | Modifier: +1

Match Two vs. Nexxus Drako @ Sterling City Cricket Ground
Capacity: 8,000 | Club: Sterling City | Modifier: -6

Match One vs. Ingla Terra @ Colosus Romanopolis Oval
Capacity: 8,000 | Club: Romanopolis | Modifier: +2

Match Two vs. Ingla Terra @ Vogler City Cricket Ground
Capacity: 7,000 | Club: Vogler City | Modifier: +1

Match Three vs. Ingla Terra @ Capital Oval
Capacity: 15,000 | Club: Scott City CC | Modifier: +1

Not only will Darmen be returning home, but Iudocus Snyder and Bysshe Marino will also be returning to the Starting XI, taking the place of Benaiah West and Nicolaus Mac Pharlain. Dominique Apperlo will also take over Siorus Riese's role of wicket-keeper. Snyder was average in his only match against Gruenberg, while Marino performed extremely poor, taking only one wicket and allowing 160 runs over two innings. After that, the two were replaced by West and Mac Pharlain, who both performed at an average level. West was the better of the two, taking seven wickets over three matches.

While Riese played extremely well, scoring the third most runs for Darmen batting, Apperlo will be given his test debut at home, and it is hoped that he could also spark Darmen's batting performance after some poor showings in Gruenberg.

Johnson will be looking for a more inclusive team effort against both Nexxus Drako and Ingla Terra. Johnson led Darmen in just about every statistical category, and only Cory Hanegan could come close to matching Johnson's performance bowling, being slightly more economical while taking less wickets. On the batting side, only opener Urs Méndez came close, claiming two centuries and 368 runs overall.

Darmen will play the first and final match of its two home series at the 15,000 seat Capital Oval in Scott City. Darmen will finish its series against Nexxus Drako at the very bowler friendly Sterling City Cricket Ground, which seats 8,000. Both Romanopolis and Vogler City will host their first ever test matches to start the series against Ingla Terra, the Colosus Romanopolis Oval hosting the first match and the Vogler City Cricket Ground the second. With the exception of Sterling City, most of the grounds will be slightly batsman friendly, and higher scores may prove to be the norm.

    Naroadnig wins match award

Yeepratturthatturammurhammurhelion "Yeepers" Naroadnig won the match award in the First Test between Gruenberg and Liventia at the scenic Island Cricket Arena in Schimpol, perhaps for having the best beard. Naroadnig's magnificent, coal black, chest-length beard has frequently won praise and adulation, with a minor cult of heterodox Wenaist thought ascribing it with religious significance. Even a helmet worn while batting or squatting at short leg could not constrain the imperious flow of the majestic cascade of facial hair, luxuriant and soft, yet with a hint of dark, untamed virility and vigour to it. A true all-rounder, Naroadnig's beard was accompanied by long, carefully groomed whiskers.

Senior officials blamed Gruenberg's defeat in the Third Test against Darmen in large part to the absence of all-rounder Willan Pinnex, and more particularly his impressive beard, which frequently inspired the team to victory. Now, though, it appears Naroadnig is ready to take on the mantle of the team's beardmaster-general, his locks blowing lightly in the cross-breeze that provided attractive drift for the spinners in a draw that see-sawed back and forth, but was ultimately settled with the shake of hands late on the fifth day.

Captain Zambuimmi Hentridan was full of praise. "Yeepers's beard is really special. There were times, when Liventia's lead was moving past three figures, when I didn't know what to do. But then I would just turn, and see that beard." Hengtridan broke off for several minutes, staring into the middle-distance in awed silence, before concluding in hushed tones: "It was like divine inspiration." Seam bowler iiPriyuff Uglaxx, who is expected to become the first Gruenberg seamer to take 100 wickets during the Second Test, was critical of star batsman Benny Enchante's performance: "Benny has that sort of 'designer stubble' look, you know? It's stupid. Compare that to Yeepers's full-bodied beard. Now that's what you want to see when you're running in with the second new ball."

Unrelatedly, Naroadnig also scored a double century and took six wickets.
"Do you mean "coming out"...as a Guardian reader would understand the term?"

The Nexxus Drako Age

Test Cricket Update
Author: Sports Chief Kent Joseph

Test Cricket, not the most popular sport in Nexxus Drako, but still quite popular nonetheless. Although to the casual observer, Jym Tymplr seems to be our great and esteemed leader but alas, the leader and the cricketer are not related.

We recently played against Darmen on their turf, in which we lost by 8 wickets after posting quite low scores compared to them. We are technically still Candidates, but a good performance against Darmen in the second test will cement our status as Associate Members.

We have some preliminary statistics coming out of Darmen, but our copy has a slight error where the score for our second innings doesn't match up to our batting stats. This should be fixed either soon, or as I write this.

Anyway, we are losing the series 1-0, and we'll be looking to avoid a whitewash. Meanwhile, plans are already moving ahead to bring Associate Member Jeckland to our home turf, but at the moment, said plans are in their infancy.

The Gruenberger Chronicle
Part of the Polar Picayune Media Group

Both teams may have considered themselves fortunate to escape with a draw from the First Test at the Island Cricket Arena after a blorr-blorring* match saw Gruenberg conceding a 162 run first innings deficit, before coming back thanks to record triple century partnership for the fifth wicket of their second innings between Yeepers Naroadnig, who made his Test score of 230, and maiden Test centurion Nernoiks Likkilai, who made 148. 363 on the final day of a difficult pitch was never a realistic proposition for Liventia and some chaotic running between the wickets briefly threatened something extraordinary when Gruenberg reduced Liventia to 72-4, but James Quinn and Will Stewart took the hosts impassively to safety.

Max Finney's decision to bowl first on a pitch likely to break up was surprising, but his seamers justified it magnificently, while Gruenberg contributed to their own demise by batting with an unneeded haste: despite scoring at over 4.5 runs per over, they made only 256 as they were bowled out before tea. Plopples Hrrrg, with an out-of-character 70 off 78, was the beneficiary of the Liventian short ball tactics, presumably aimed at dislodging Benny Enchante and Pitkin Deisler. Both batsmen failed twice in the match, Enchante in particularly appalling fashion in the second innings, tamely edging spinner Daniel Quinn off a horrible swipe after being struck on the body twice by the pacy Jonathan Adams in the previous over.

But that same length fed Hrrrg's natural strengths of the cut and pull while avoiding testing him on the front foot, and a man with a career strike rate of under 40 ended up leading the team attacking counterthrust. His failure to convert his starts, however, leaves questions over his place lingering. The remainder of the runs came from Azzawozzawoowizzbitz Telliflikkiflarknon, with an edgy and fortunate 49, backing away to the seamers and slashing across the line needlessly in sight of his half-century, and a last wicket stand of 45 in 6 overs of entertaining tail end slogging from Dervin Yeg and iiPriyuff Uglaxx.

In response, Gruenberg's seamers were unable to find the same seam movement and pace off the pitch, while Liventia's batsmen showed more solidity. Most worryingly, they played Sprantothan Juffwump with ease: he looked a much tamer proposition outside of the Gruenberger subcontinent and finished the match wicketless from 40 overs. Uglaxx missed much of the second day after hurting his knee fielding, and Telliflikkiflarknon was bowled into the ground with a career high 40 overs, his return of 2-104 underwhelming. Naroadnig, called on to bowl to the Liventian right handers while Juffwump struggled, claimed a maiden career five for. For Liventia, the star was Ollie Kerr, a familiar sight to the Gruenberger players after his GPL stint, who put in 180 with Duncan Lewis: Lewis fell for 92, but Kerr went on to make a dominating 143 that looked to have set up a winning position.

Hrrrg then propelled another flying start, the scoreboard briefly crediting his innings to Deisler as confusion reigned, but his aggression got the better of him once Daniel Quinn entered the fray, the seamers having been hit out of the attack. Quinn, one of the players of the season in the GPL, vastly outbowled Juffwump through the match, and threw into question the traditional assumption that spin posed no threat to Gruenberger batsmen. Deisler chipped a return catch to him, brother James took an excellent slip catch to deny Hrrrg a half-century, a panicked Enchante flapped an edge, and then Hengtridan's needless run-out spelled doom, at 85-4.

The recovery from there was remarkable, Naroadnig and Likkilai batting virtually an entire day. Both survived chances early in their innings - Naroadnig dropped at second slip, Likkilai top-edging a sweep that landed between three fielders none of whom appeared interested in catching it - but both put those reprieves behind them to bat with an application that put the more high profile batsmen to shame. For Naroadnig, long considered a home track bully, the innings was important, pushing his career average back past 50 and meaning he now has more Test centuries than even Enchante; for Likkilai, it was absolutely career-defining, having kept his place only by his fingernails for this match. Both eventually fell to Quinn, but only having long since made the game safe for Gruenberg.

Chastened by 160 overs in the field, Liventia appeared intent only on surviving for a draw, with no hope of chasing 363 on a deteriorating pitch. Gruenberg bowled poorly, but shambolic running gifted them a hint of a chance, Finney caught short from point and Kerr smartly run out by Enchante, flicking the ball back to Turvuaednes from slip as Kerr attempted to regain his ground to Juffwump. Uglaxx accounted for Hennessey after a torturous 19 ball duck, clearly struggling to contain his natural attacking instinct, and Lewis hit a stinging chance straight to cover. Will Stewart then briefly revived hopes of something improbably with a breezy 86, but James Quinn at the other end looked set on resolute defence, and a poorly judged single for another run-out ended any chance of a result as the game petered out to the scene of Naroadnig bowling darts outside Quinn's legs.

An unchanged side is expected for the next Test, but Gruenberg will want to put in a more consistent performance. In particular, Deisler and Enchante have to find a way of dealing with the short ball, whether through attack like Hrrrg or robust defence like Naroadnig; and Juffwump, bowling on pitches that don't offer the turn of his home surfaces, produce more attacking variation if he is to trouble Liventian batsmen who have now played a number of matches against him.

Darmen win first Test, could win series with victory or draw
Johnson takes 9 wickets, Mandelbaum scores 189

In front of a capacity crowd on all four days of action, Darmen defeated Nexxus Drako in their first ever meeting by eight wickets. The 15,000 or so fans at the Capital Oval went wild early on in the fourth day when Robbe Hébert sent an Etwrd Jakob delivery into the stands for six and a Darmeni victory at home.

After winning the toss, Darmen chose to field first, a decision which appeared to be the wrong one until Matthew Johnson took the first wicket of the day 13.5 overs into the match. The rest of the innings passed uneventfully for Nexxus Drako, with the sole exception of Yvette Lee's half century of 67 off 99. In terms of Darmen's bowling however, the innings was filled with excitement, as Johnson would take three more wickets, and both Bysshe Marino and Ofydd Descoteaux took two of their own.

Darmen would then take their turn batting, and things started off very well. Mandelbaum and Méndez combined for 65 before Méndez hit a high towering shot that Donald War caught easily. Mandelbaum would remain in the middle for the entire innings, scoring 122 off of 236, evenually having to leave after a scoop shot went straight to Peta Jones in the outfield.

With a lead of 48 runs heading into Nexxus Drako's second innings, victory was far from assured. But after Johnson forced Jake Janvey into a bad shot that Dexcoteaux was able to collect, Nexxus Drako was unable to recover, and Darmen would only need 142 runs, and would have over two days to get there. Darmen didn't even need more than a day, as Darmen raked in 144 in just 45.2 overs, at a rate of 3.18 runs per over. Mandelbaum would score 67 runs not out in his second innings, adding a half century to his first innings century.

Fionntan Bradley struggled batting, recording a duck in his first innings and scoring only 13 off of 35 in his second. Bradley will be replaced by Austyn Kimberly for the final match against Nexxus Drako. The only other change for that match will be in the bowling attack, as Iudocus Snyder will be replaced by Alger Díaz, as Snyder has been complaining of tightness in his hand.

State of Play
A man. Sports. Booze.

Day 1

OK, back home. Liventia had been a bit of a misadventure, sure, we won a game, but we got routed in two tests and were generally poor. But now we were back on our home track, against a new side we hadn't played before, Chelta. They'd come off a 1-0 victory of The Nihilistic View, so were about in as good as touch as we were, but had the 'momentum' of a series victory.

Sterne and the selectors had decided not to make any changes, and yeah, it seemed like a reasonable idea. The 12th man in the squad was untested tweaker Jonathan Perry, so it seemed logical to keep everything in place. Sterne won the toss and decided to bat. A perfectly reasonable choice, it was sunny, not too green and the weather looked great for the foreseeable future. I love Wrayian Summers: never too hot, but always sunny. Not like the winters when the wind and rain howls in off the Holander sea and it's genuinely s**t.

Ed McCaughey and Jackson Colt did the usual thing: play themselves in, except for once it seemed like Colt wasn't going to drive uppishly to extra-cover for just 6. But instead he did it for 25. And it was an edge, not a drive. And the keeper took it, not the extra-cover fielder. McCaughey passed his 4th Test Fifty just before lunch, and we went on 98/1, pretty decent considering our starts before hadn't been pretty good.

Amy wasn't with me, she had stayed on in Liventia to work after we hit all four Test Matches, so I caught up with some old cricket and school friends: Matt Lewis, who was the young plucky Lower Six leggie who almost usurped me after I got carted about in a game against Belford School, who had gone on to play club cricket at South Cartersburg, where I regularly frequent the bar (and occasionally the wicket for the 5th XI) & Chris Teller, who wrote cricket for the National Reporter, which was pretty much the biggest sporting journalism spot in the entire country. We spent the lunch break (and truth be told, a part of the Afternoon session) in the Media Centre Free Room (a place where journos can drink without having to mix with 20,000 spectators). There was plenty of catching up, and plenty of beer flowing, and as a result, I was less pissed off when Ed McCaughey lost his wicket, victim to a sneaky in-shuffler from Harry Donoghue. Mitchell fell midway through the session, lbw to Rupert Madison, a pretty controversial decision as I'm convinced he nicked it before it hit his pad.

Ashton Macallister joined Simon Sterne at the crease, and began to build arguably the greatest partnership in Wray's brief test history. Sterne's innings was practically faultless, with his bat seemingly all middle, and his footwork was perfect. He made Cheltan Leg-Spinner like a pie-chucker, and his cover drive off Stuart Werren was probably the best cricket shot I'd ever seen (except for maybe my leg-side flick in 5th (Ages 13-14 in Senior School)). He passed his century shortly before the close to rapturous applause from the Oval faithful. He'd been a bit out of sorts recently, but this innings reconfirmed him as one of the world's best batting talents. Meanwhile Ashton was quietly accumulating a decent knock of his own, passing fifty before Sterne's landmark, and in a reasonably quick time too, just 67 balls. Wray closed on

After the day's play, I retreated to a personal favourite local drinking establishment, where I conversed with fans on the pros and cons of playing Ashton Macallister as the fifth seamer and whether the current treatment of wickets in the Regional Competition was positive to the game. Yes, it wasn't the big city glamour of Orean or Dover in Liventia, the raw cricket passion of Gruenberg (which, by the way, I am super looking for to going to with Amy) or even the grandeur of the ACG, but it was my home. And it was bloody good.

Day 2

Day 2 was much the same as Day 1 weather wise, sunny, with just a hint of a southerly breeze blowing off the mountains: perfect cricketing weather. Sterne and Macallister came back in unbeaten, the captain on 103* and Macallister on 52*, and Wray on 266/3. The pair were cautious at first, playing out three maidens, which included a pretty solid LBW shout from Werren against Sterne, but the umpires denied it, I honestly thought it was out; I couldn't see what was wrong with it.

Sterne did fall shortly afterwards however, and it was LBW, except this time it was Harry Donoghue who got one to scoot on low past his bat and into his pad. It was 100% plumb and Sterne was on his way back for 128. 309/4, and a pretty

Jason Keillher came out.

And promptly went back again.

Argh.

He inexplicably tried to launch his first ball over extra-cover, and totally misread the line of the ball, swashing at thin air whilst the ball crashed into the top of off stump. He turned around, clueless, as the Cheltans celebrated around him. He lumbered back to the pavilion, helmet off, and promptly deposited his bat into an unoccupied area of seating right by the steps to the dressing rooms, where an alert steward managed to get to it before a bunch of teenage cricket fanatics could jump on it.

Stacey's lean run continued after starting well: stroking a beautiful back-foot cut off May and generally looking comfortable at the crease. That was until he played a quite un-Stacey-like shot, a slog-pull shot thing which picked out Ernie Sullivan at midwicket for just 9. Distinctly disappointing, but no-one dared mention the D word* as he went back for yet another poor score. Jackson Storm came out and did the usual thing: play some good strokes but keep that aura that he didn't really know what he was doing. He trundled his way to 25, before being beaten by the leg-spinner's googly and nicked through to keeper Donald Goss. May quickly dealt with Blake Matthews, whilst Donoguhe bowled a ripper to get rid of every single one of Craig Bennett's stumps. Literally, every single one. Off, middle and leg. Aguando fell the very next ball, wrapping up Wray fora handy 426.

*Dropped

[Would do a big one, but I wanna get it in for tomorrow, and I won't have a lot of internet access then]

    Gruenberg saved by late downpour

After four days of glorious sunshine that had baked the WT Stadium pitch flatter than a kuptino*, two storms shook a dull Test to life and briefly threatened Gruenberg with a dispiriting defeat: the first storm, in the form of Matt Geach, underfiring thus far in the series, ripped out their top order on a featherbed pitch where their own seamers had struggled to pose any sort of threat; the second, in the form of the rain that had earlier in the week washed out Liventia's planned warm-up match against their Tigers reserve team, ultimately proved decisive, denying Liventia an astonishing victory and saving, briefly, Gruenberg's blushes.

The final scenes of the fifth day saw Dylan Hennessey and Duncan Lewis hitting iiPriyuff Uglaxx and Sprantothan Juffwump to all parts as they tried to chase down the 79 needed for victory before the rain returned, only to be hauled off for a fourth time by the umpires on a rain-interrupted day. Gruenberg's players watched their salvation pouring from the skies in a deluge that spared them, but did little to hide how poor they had been for much of the Test.

The match saw six 95+ scores, three converted to centuries: that all three were by Liventians, while all three Gruenbergers fell short, summed up the overall tone of the match. Gruenberg failed to take advantage of a favourable toss: after a century stand for the second wicket took them to 113-1, they collapsed to 184-6, losing their only batsmen to make peace with the flat, but slow, surface, Pitkin Deisler, for 66, chipping to short-leg; Benny Enchante missed a sweep to spinner Daniel Quinn after another roughing up by the seamers, and Zambuimmi Hengtridan's leave of a straight ball typified an increasingly difficult tour for the captain.

Nernoiks Likkilai, fresh from his debut hundred, and Spintmhitz Turvuaednes, badly in need of runs, staged a recovery to take them to a reasonable score on the second day, but neither really dominated the bowling, nor managed to reach their hundreds, Likkilai caught on the back foot prodding and Turvuaednes brilliantly caught by a tumbling Hennessey at short midwicket. Even with contributions from Sprantothan Juffwump and Dervin Yeg, Gruenberg were well short of the 500 that would have been assumed on such a wicket: by contrast, Liventia finished the day on 84 without loss, and looking well set to make their innings count.

Gruenberg had difficulty stringing wickets together, with all of the Liventian batsmen getting starts: James Quinn, Will Stewart and Michael Westley converted those starts into contrasting hundreds, Quinn's 206-ball epic all patient accumulation, Stewart's brilliant 164 showing utter mastery of Juffwump's variations as the off-spinner sent down a national record 62 overs - and owed all three of his wickets to sharp catches from ordinary deliveries - and Westley's confident 108 compounding the humiliation as the score passed 600 for an eventual lead of 178. Enchante bowled more overs than Yeg, while Juffwump's helplessness as Stewart hit him straight down the ground and Westley reverse swept him was almost tragicomic.

Still, the game should have finished in a leaden draw, beginning the fifth day on 26-1 with rain approaching and Matt Geach having taken just two wickets in the series thus far. Instead, he used the cloud cover to conjure swing married to his pace that utterly beguiled the Gruenberger top order, while another top-edged hook from Enchante meant whispers about his ability to play the short ball were growing ever louder. Deisler's attempts at counterattack induced a lot of edges, several for boundaries, the final for a simple catch, and only Azzawozzawoowizzbitz Telliflikkiflarknon, with a flashing 97, saved them from an innings defeat as he hauled the total past parity, but fell short of his own century at a time when his bowling place is under question.

That left Liventia needing only 79, and they began sedately enough, James Quinn and Max Finney seeing off a tough opening spell before falling in successive overs. But more rain breaks began to seriously erode the time left in the game, and when an extremely reluctant Hengtridan led his team back onto the field after some cajoling from the seventeenth umpire, Hennessey and Lewis had to attack. Juffwump went for 12 and Uglaxx 13 runs in four balls, but he managed to recover long enough for another cloudburst. The players would not return again: an almost great finish had not quite materialised, and Liventia were left to rue - and Gruenberg to wallow in - what might have been.

Changes expected ahead of Third Test

Plopples Hrrrg and Dervin Yeg are the players most likely to lose their places for the third Test at The Bastion Dover, with middle order batsman Kakuwat Gezzalqin and leg-spinner Spanglepants Croffnuppet in line for Test debuts. Both have previously played for Gruenberg in ODIs and faced Liventian players such as Finney, Hennessey and Quinn, but neither were expected to play in Tests at the start of this tour. However, the need to shake up the Gruenberger top order is constrained by the retention of Benny Enchante, effectively undroppable, captain Zambuimmi Hengtridan and all-rounder Yeepers Naroadnig. With Pitkin Deisler scoring two fifties in the second Test while Hrrrg failed, and being considered the superior player of spin, Hrrrg looks likely to make way, meaning Naroadnig would return to opening and Hengtridan to 3.

Less certain is that Yeg will make way for Croffnuppet. While the Dover pitch is known for spin, Gruenberg already have a passable second spinner in Naroadnig, who took six wickets in the first Test; additionally, omitting Yeg would test Telliflikkiflarknon's unreliable fitness record, with no back-up seam option in the team. What is assured is that Gruenberg's tame performances are just adding to the reputation as home-track bullies that their limited over triumphs in Liventia had done much to negate, and the same team cannot continue to produce weak showings.

Bowlers come good but batsmen let team down

Typical. Our bowlers finally learn how to bowl a side out for less than 400 twice in a row, and our batsmen go and decide it’s their turn to be complete plonkers.

When our bowlers each (for once) pulled their weight and managed to dismiss Wray for 284 within the first day, I was certain we were about to see Chelta end their drawing streak. Our bats would come through for us, I assumed naively. Walters would have a bash around the ground, make a quick-fire fifty and get out, his job done. No fear though, Blainey and Macnair, a more sensible pair, would steward Chelta safely and masterfully into clear waters. If not, the impenetrable Waight-Sullivan partnership would steer Chelta into a position of unassailable command (it was ever thus). We would scupper the Enemy once more, and contemptuously chase down its pathetic lead. We would win.

Why don’t things ever work out the way they’re supposed to? True, Walters and Blainey put on a decent opening partnership; but that’s where my prophesying skills ended. Walters made an honest, battling half century, but edged the irrepressible Storm through to the keeper Stacey on 80. Blainey had already fallen to the same assailant short of a half-century of 48.

It all went balls up after Walters fell. Waight made an ugly one (rather an anticlimax, coming straight off the back of a career-best unbeaten triple hundred) off 18 balls. Sullivan made five for his twenty-eight ball stay at the crease. Rupert Madison paddled the spinner Aguando back into his hands the very next ball. The in-form batsman Macnair edged Matthews behind the next over.

So what happened there? I blame Waight. He’s the nucleus of Chelta’s top order, and he needs to be more responsible. He’s the save-the-innings man at the save-the-innings position, and he didn’t perform his role. The mid order collapse started by his dismissal sealed Chelta’s fate.

Finishing only 23 runs behind Wray, though, I still had hope for a Cheltish fightback. And, indeed, our bowlers came through again, dismissing the Wrayians for 289. Birt bowled uncharacteristically well, given his run of bad form, taking advantage of both new balls to put his swing to effective use, taking three wickets. With more than two days’ play remaining, a lead of 312 was certainly gettable.

You’d think so, anyway. I heard my next-door neighbour swear violently at her television set when Walters capitulated on 23, edging through to the Wrayian captain feeling sillily for the ball away from his body. Jaime Macnair made a hard-fought fifty—before immediately getting clean bowled by Aguando, uncharacteristically trying (and failing) to slog him over his head. Percy Waight looked like his old, fluent self, making a rapid-fire 76 with Macnair at his side. It looked almost, for a brief period, as if Chelta might actually chase down this total. But the usually adroit player of spin top-edged the left-arm wrist spinner Aguando into the outstretched hands of Colt at short leg. Ernie Sullivan put up a last, valiant fight with the tail, desperately chasing a lead that looked increasingly beyond reach, before he, too, fell soon after. The last four wickets were cleared up for 37 runs.

Chelta, O, Chelta...

Percy Waight said a lot of guff at the press conference after the match about “failing to win the big moments”. He’s right – but it was the batsmen specifically who let the side down. The bowlers bowled consistently well, for once, but were given nothing to bowl to. One positive to take out of this match is that the bowlers are all starting to pull their weight. It is good, in any case, to see that Ian Birt has broken out of his recent rut of bad form. Too bad he’ll likely be shuffled out for Hugo Murray for the final Test at TM Parker Bayside Stadium, supposedly a much more spin-friendly wicket where Birt’s swing will not be of great use.

(OOC: This match takes place ICly before the second Test took place)
Sean Finney shines in rain-hit friendly
Dover— Max Finney may be the more recognisable name and face, but in the most recent battle of the Finneys, younger brother Sean won out.

The younger Finney starred in a rain-affected three-day match between a Liventia XI and the reserve Liventia Tigers 'A' side at the Bastion, which will also hold the third Test of the ongoing series against Gruenberg.

Max captained the senior side but turned the gloves over to Garland Goudreau, who was playing in his first first-class match of the Test season.

Rain was to play a part on all three days and limited the match to Liventia XI's first innings and just 9.3 overs of the Tigers' first innings, but it was enough time for Goudreau to top-score with 42 on a difficult surface to stake his claim for a first Test call-up of the summer at this very ground in a few matches' time.

And Sean Finney can possibly have done his own national team chances no harm with four wickets for 37 runs at a stingy economy rate of 1.37 runs per over.

Spinners skittle Gruenberg to seal victory
Dover— Daniel Quinn and Duncan Lewis shared seven wickets between them to skittle Gruenberg for 108 in their second innings of the third Test at Dover, putting Liventia in the driving seat.

No Gruenberger batsman was able to post a substantial score on the board – the highest being Nernoiks Likkilai's 19 – as the spinners made the most of the dustbowl that Dover has come to be known for.

Benny Enchante, Gruenberg's first-innings centurion, fell for a golden duck to Quinn, who took match figures of 8/132. Lewis claimed 3/12 from just 5.1 overs to add to his maiden five-for in the first-innings for match figures of 8/52, the second-best match figures of the Test season for a Liventian bowler.

Liventia's chase was not without difficulty. Captain Max Finney continued his indifferent, and inconsistent, form by being run out for 18 to add to just two from the first innings. Captain or not, an season's average of under 36 is not sustainable in an age where Test cricketers are required to maintain 40-plus averages, and Finney might be in for a brief period out of the side when unfancied Schiavonia visit Liventia.

Garland Goudreau was unable to make the most of his chance in the Test side either, and whether he takes the gloves when Finney is dropped – or whether Mike Sarrin, or even the much-talked-about Brendon du Pont will do so – is questionable.

Will Stewart and Michael Westley added red ink to their averages as Liventia got home with five wickets to spare. But a Test match over inside nine sessions will leave the CBA wondering if it is time for Dover to produce better pitches that can provide five days' worth of play.

Not that they'll be too worried about that at the moment – a win's a win.

Liventia squad to play Gruenberg, fourth Test, FCG: JCA Quinn, MA Finney*†, DA Hennessey, DM Lewis, OH Kerr, TD Jonsson, FJW Stewart, KSM Christensen, MC Geach, DM Quinn, JPK Adams. 12th man: WWR Ashworth, 13th man: MJ Westley
