Welcome to the signups for the Watterson Bowl II!

The first Watterson Bowl brought together eight nations to play the renowned sport of Calvinball, where you can't play the same way twice, masks are unquestioned, and you win by, uh, I'm not entirely sure.
Popularized by Bill Watterson's comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, Calvinball's first tournament was won by Super-Llamaland, who prevailed over New Wolfopolis in the final by a score of 306z to z268.

Now, we bring you the second tournament. The second Watterson Bowl. Will your Calvinballers top the podium at the end of it all?

Signing Up

This is the easy part. Simply say something like "in" or "(your nation name) signs up". If you really feel like it, write an elaborate RP signup, but it probably won't count for anything.

SIGNUPS ARE CURRENTLY FROZEN. THOSE WHO SIGN UP WILL BE WAITLISTED. WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT WAITLIST NATIONS WILL MAKE IT IN.

There are currently ~~fourteen~~ sixteen signups.

Puppets

Every participating nation may enter up to one puppet. Puppets run the risk of being excluded if the numbers make it necessary.

Host Bids

Want to leave your mark on NS Sports Calvinball? Simply apply to host for the Watterson Bowl II! While no experience is needed, users who have it will have a greater chance of winning. The deadline for host bids has been set for Friday, March 7th at 23:59 CST.

If you want to host, make sure to include the following information:

-Format
-Your nation
-Past experience
-Playoffs
-Stadiums
-Tiebreakers
-Scorinators and RP bonus system

There are currently two host bids.

Calvinball Scorinators

While there is not an official Calvinball scorinator, nations are advised to use the approach Shadowbourne took in the previous Watterson Bowl:

Each matchday, there will be three sports that will be combined to generate the score of each match. Each sport will count for a certain percentage of the final score. For example, matchday one might be scorinated in the following fashion:

20% Baseball
50% Football
30% Korfball

In addition, one random character will be added to the score of each team in order to replicate the randomness of Calvinball scores in the strip.

Each sport will represent a certain IC aspect of the match. For example, the "baseball" score might represent the number of free throws made while jumping up and down on a pogo stick and singing "The Pogo Stick Song". The "football" score might represent the number of baskets scored while hopping backwards on one leg and making dolphin noises, and so on for each sport that is being incorporated into the final score of the match.

Rankings

If you host, feel free to use them, although that wouldn't be very random, now would it? Anyway, you can use them if you'd like. If you need results, click on the Watterson Bowl link above.

So what experience do you have?

Ummm... I've ICly hosted half of the Lzher-Jeckland Invitational, but couldn't OOCly host due to something I like to call "My fucking laptop". Rest assured it is fixed. I've been around the fourms for a couple months, so I know what I gotta do

Ummm... okay. So how will this run?

Well, at the time of writing we have 12 signups. Here are formats for 12-20. If there is an odd number of signups I will add my numbers puppet. If there are more than 20 signups I will edit this bid accordingly.

12 SIGNUPS
3 groups of 4, double round robin, winners plus best runner up go to semis, straight knockout from there.

14 SIGNUPS
2 groups of 7, single round robin, top two from each group go to semifinals, straight knockout from there.

16 SIGNUPS
4 groups of 4, double round robin, top two from each group go to quarterfinals, straight knockout from there.

18 SIGNUPS
3 groups of 6, single round robin, top two plus two best thirds go to quarterfinals, straight knockout from there.

20 SIGNUPS
5 groups of 4, double round robin, winners plus three best runners up go to quarterfinals, straight knockout from there.

What about RP?

Graded on a 0-1 scale. Quality over quantity. Simple.

Okay, so how will you deal with the, er, randomness of NS Sports Calvinball?

Right. This is where it gets fun.
I will use a randomizer to pick the three sports used for scorination. They will be from xkoranate.

I'm not convinced at your ability to come up with funny ways to score points.

An example then.

30% Lacrosse, points scored by how loud a scream you can make a homeless person emit. (Homeless people are provided)
20% Rugby, points scored by doing the kan-kan atop a pig singing The Fox
50% Basketball, number of people you can hit in the crowd with rotten tomatoes.

Break Out the Paper Hats: Super-Llamaland Bid for WB2

The user behind Llama

The user behind Super-Llamaland has been a dedicated NS Sports RP-er for a pretty long time, at least a year. We just took home the WBC 28 trophy and serve on the World Cup and World Baseball Classic councils. Soccer-wise, we've been one away goal from the World Cup and we're Cup of Harmony Quarterfinalists.

In Calvinball, Super-Llamaland is known for winning the first Watterson Bowl by going undefeated to take home the Watterson Bowl, which will be a giant, golden, engraved bowl for this Watterson Bowl. I'm also one of two users (the other being New Wolfopolis) behind the World Calvinball Federation in the first place.

Hosting? Well, I've co-hosted the first and third International Baseball Slams.

Format

A group stage would not do Calvinball justice, so here's what I'll do.

The proposed format would have groups of four or six.

Groups would be drawn by rankings, which I will describe below.

Anyways, this will run somewhat like a Swiss tournament. Nations will be randomly drawn against opponents. On the first day, nations with ranks will play nations without ranks for sure.

If a nation in a pot loses three (four) or two (six) games total, they will be eliminated from the pot.

If there are an odd number of teams remaining, the highest-seeded team will get a bye day. If there is a tie, it will be broken by

1.) Ranking
2.) RP Bonus
3.) H2H

This will continue until there are two teams remaining. The two teams will then advance to the playoffs, which will be single-game.

This "group stage" shouldn't take any longer than one week to conclude.

Okay...uh, rankings and RP bonuses?

Well, I'm making them based on the following formula.

(wins+1)/(games the champion played)

This is the WBC formula and might not work for this edition, so I'll leave this as an unofficial ranking.

Under that formula, the rankings would look like this:
Super-Llamaland: 1.111
New Wolfopolis: 0.667
Paradystopia: 0.667
Shadowbourne: 0.555
San Jose Guayabal: 0.444
Albaie: 0.444
Nassau-Hessen: 0.444
Hessington Island: 0.111
I'll grade RP bonuses out of 1.5 for every MD. Rosters count as 1.5 as well.

Tiebreakers?

Don't need 'em due to this new format.

Scorination?

Done solely using NSFS 3.0.1. Every day, I'll randomize the baseball, football, and soccer features by tens. So

baseball 30%
football 50%
soccer 20%

would be acceptable, but

baseball 63%
football 29%
soccer 8%

Would not. If I got something like "20%", I would scorinate, then multiply by two. If it were 40%, I'd multiply scores by four. And so on. I would then add on a randomized consonant, because vowels are frivolous and superfluous.

IC?

Calvinball games will be held on a large one mile by one mile section with a scoreboard that can be easily rigged through downloading the correct mobile app. About half of it will be woods, and the other half will be a large clearing with a few circles spray-painted in it for no apparent reason.

Unfortunately, Calvinball is supposed to just be a nice, light-hearted sport, so putting ads, especially ads for what appear to be missiles, would not fit in with our image. Thank you for the generous offer, though.
