International Baseball Slam IV Everything Thread

Hello, and welcome to the International Baseball Slam IV, hosted by Gregoryisgodistan. This is our first time hosting an international sporting competition. Group stage games will be played home-and-home at the sites of the participating nations. Knockout stage games will be played at the larger Lord Almighty Gregory National Stadium and the smaller Lord Almighty Gregory Baseball Stadium, with specific assignments to be announced the matchday before.

Pots are below. The group draw will be posted on Sunday, January 12. The tournament will start on Saturday, January 18. Cut-off for the first matchday only will be between 11 PM and midnight Eastern Standard Time. After that, it will be between 8 and 10 PM unless I post otherwise. Please post a roster in this thread. You can also earn points for a pre-MD1 RP. New Wolfpolis will scorinate my group and all of my knockout stage matches, but this will not affect hosting IC-ly. He will have a separate cut-off than me, but it will be in the same range.

Tiebreakers
In the event of a decisive tie (see below for explanation) there will always be a tiebreaker game, just like in MLB. MLB tiebreaking procedures for more than two tied teams will be applied if necessary. You can look these up if you want. If it seems possible for it to happen, I will explain them after MD5. They will likely require an extra day if this happens, which would push everything after back a day. If I am in a tiebreaker, New Wolfopolis will scorinate it. I will scorinate all other tiebreaker games, even if they are in my group. In the event of a non-decisive tie, the following tiebreakers will be applied. They will also be used to determine the home team in a tiebreaker game.

2. H2H run differential
3. H2H runs for (would only be different from #2 if 3 or more teams are involved)
4. Overall run differential
5. Overall runs for
6. Random draw

RP Challenges

At Super-Llamaland's suggestion, I am bringing back RP Challenges like in IBS I. I am not creative enough to do them every day, but I will do 5 of them throughout the tournament. Four of them will be on the designated off days, to give you an extra challenge since you have an extra day to RP. One of them will be on a date in the group stage that I will not announce in advance, just to throw a little surprise in there. I will say that the unannounced RP will not occur on the off day between MD3 and MD4 since you already have a challenge there. The surprise challenge will be announced when I announce the results from the previous day. From what I’ve revealed, you can, if you’re smart, figure out there are only four possible days it can happen.

The off day RPs will be announced around what would be normal cut-off time if it wasn’t an off day. However, your regular RPs for that day will not be cut off at that point - you will still have about 24 hours to submit it along with the challenge. Each RP challenge is worth up to one additional point in addition to the normal RP bonus for that day. Your regular RP should be separate from your challenge RP. However, you may make them in the same post as long as you designate which one is which (or in some cases, it will be obvious.)

Series 4: D1 vs. C2

Semifinals:

WS1 vs. WS2
WS3 vs. WS4

The field will not be reseeded for the semifinals, but the “home” team for games 1 and 3 will be determined by who is the higher seed. (Although it does not carry a meaningful advantage at a neutral site.)

An exception is that you can eject both my manager and my pitcher for throwing at a batter after a warning (as the rules say should happen) and this counts as one ejection.

Use DH at home: Yes. But we're using official MLB rules, meaning if you have a starting pitcher who is a good hitter, you may bat him instead of a DH, but then you lose your right to a DH for the remainder of the game even if you go to the bullpen.

2.) #10 Angel Ramirez, SS (S/R): Almost never strikes out. He is a stud defender, and great contact hitter.
3.) #8 Jakub Cervenak, 3B (R/R): Great leader, always helping the younger guys. He finds the gaps frequently and is a vacuum over at third base.
4.) #25 Dae Ho Choi, DH (L/L): A rather large player. He isn't the greatest defender, but he hits monster home runs.
5.) #21 Giancarlo Rivera, LF (R/R): Not the greatest defender, he is in the lineup for his bat.
6.) #23 Kyle Whitson, 1B (R/R): Gap power. Hits a fair number of doubles. He's a competitor, but a real quiet guy off the field.
*7.) #17 Casper Hunt, RF (L/R): Young player with some wheels. Great defensive outfielder. Starts against righties, but Ryan Hamilton is the starter vs. lefties
8.) #19 Taylor Robinson, C (R/R): Tough competitor. He's hard-nosed, and sometimes will try to get in the heads of the guys at the plate. Is is not the greatest hitter, but he's a solid defensive catcher. Hard to steal against.
9.) #2 Luis Castro, 2B (S/R): A scrappy player, he finds his way on base a lot. Won't hit a lot of home runs, but can steal a few bags when he needs to

IF: #12 Javier Castillo (R/R) Sometimes starts in place Luis Castro. He's a good hitter, and a decent defender.
*OF: #18 Ryan Hamilton (R/L) Hits lefties well, and therefore platoons with Casper Hunt (starts against lefties)
OF #28 Michael Andrews (L/R) Kind of an oddball. Decent hitter, frequent defensive replacement for Rivera.

Rotation (Throws)
SP: #30 Marco Crabbe (R): Sometimes too focused on his individual performance. Loves the game, but guys know to stay on the other side of the dugout when he pitches poorly. Throws hard and locates well. Good curveball, slider, and change-up as well.
SP: #40 Aaron Weaver (R): A sinker-ball pitcher. He thrives on ground ball outs. Rarely surrenders home runs.
SP: #29 Jonathan Boyd (L): Always seems to have a smile on his face. A tough lefty, he gets a ton of movement on his pitches. Mixes speeds well.
SP: #48 Kevin Jansen (R): Knuckleballer. Robinson struggles to receive with him on the hill, so Fox catches for him.
SP: #33 Enrique Castro (R): This guy is a bit crazy. Throws hard, and is not afraid to come inside.

Bullpen
Closer: #44 José Guevara (R): Very animated; fierce competitor. Can hit 100.
Setup: #41 Mario Serafini (R): Quiet, but very skilled.
RP: #37 Clayton Brighton (L): Eccentric, and dominant against left-handers. Throws side-arm and has a filthy breaking ball. Gets a ton of movement, even on his fastball
RP: #55 Roger Bishop (R): A large man, he uses his momentum to throw 95+. Great fastball, decent change-up.
RP: #49 Henry Boswell (L): This guy is notorious for his bullpen games. If you see the relievers playing some weird game, odds are that he came up with it. On the hill, he is a solid pitcher. Doesn't throw hard, but locates well.
Long Relief: #31 James Bingham (R): Tall and lanky, he's a bit weird according to his teammates. Not exactly the most socially adept individual. On the hill, he has a long stride. He throws in the low 90's and his height helps it seem faster than that.

Stadium: Tyler Rocke Stadium in downtown New Llama, capital of Super-Llamaland. Tyler Rocke Stadium is the official stadium for Super-Llamaland's home games in WBC28 as Super-Llamaland National Athletics Complex is built.

The Tigers, champions of World Baseball Classic 28, are looking to promote their crop of younger U-21 stars to the big stage and have put them to work at IBS IV to evaluate them. These players may or may not be in WBC 29, making the pressure large on them.

Starting Lineup (Danks, Mills, Moreno, and Camden are lefty; Bradley is a switch hitter)

1. SS Darren Bradley- Age 33, #15 (Can also play: None): Best contact hitter in the Llamaland Baseball League. Good speed/defense and veteran presence. Good power for his relatively small size.

2. 2B Max Danks- Age 28, #2 (3B, SS) A scrappy player who can steal often and plays amazing defense. Good hitter, but could improve.

3. RF Jake Earnest, Age 20, #30 (LF or CF): A do-it-all outfielder with all five tools. A real phenom, maybe better than Trevor Matthews, his bench counter-part. Replacing fan favorite Chris Harder in the past Classic, he exploded for 24 RBIs to seal his spot in lead.

4. 1B Danny Mills- Age 34, #13 (None) Mills, a power hitter, loves pulling it to right field. Average contact hitter but when he hits it, he hits it FAR. Also a sterling defender at first.

5. Bryant Moreno, Age 32, #3: A pretty-good-at-everything catcher with a large personality and a .450 average in the last Classic. (Throws righty, bats lefty)

6. 3B Peter Camden, Age 26, #8: Similar to RL Manny Machado, a budding star with profound athleticism and stunning defense. He is an established contact hitter and is some power away from being a true all-time great.

7. CF Brett Rochester- Age 27, #0 (OF) Rochester is the kind of player who bunts himself onto first, steals second and third, and then tags up for home on a pop fly just out of the infield to the opposing shortstop.

8. LF Jake Addams- Age 29, #1 (OF) Almost as fast as Rochester, but with better D to make up.

9. DH (If needed) Keith Dawson- Age 26, #24(C/1B) He's already aging past his potential. Will he ever gain the ability to hit .300, or heck, .280? (his current international average is .220, his domestic average is .258). One thing's for sure: the kid has power.

BENCH

Roger Harkless, OF, #19, 17: Part of Super-Llamaland's youth movement. A wiry outfielder with good contact and speed. Power could develop, but maybe next tournament.

Drew Stephenson, IF, #11, 32: He can play third, short, second, and left. Good contact, speed, and defense, everything else is below-average.

Trevor Matthews, OF, #18, 22: A young outfielder with world class talent and a switch hitting bat. Matthews' swing is among the purest in the nation, but the team is still looking for a spot to give him.

The Tigers are the number-two ranked WBC team in the world, but their IBS record is not as good (they've never finished on the podium). They're looking to add some hardware to their cabinet.

R Evan Masorka- 31, #43- Low-to-mid nineties fastball, nasty high-80s sinker and splitter, looping low-70s curveball. He's so good with his other pitches and command that he doesn't even need a changeup. His career changed after the development of the final pitch.

L Ryan Lucas- 34, #44- He's made a career of his amazing curveball. A quote from catcher Chris Romatini: "It completely skips the strike zone. It starts on one edge and ends on another." He also has a nice fastball in the low nineties. But he can't seem to stay healthy for more than two starts.

L Leo Davis- #51, 30- He's been almost always injured, but has a golden arm. He throws triple-digit fastballs and mid-nineties Mariano Rivera cutters. Who needs offspeed?

R Kyle Francis- #29, 20- A possible Leo Davis in the future. 96-mph fastballs without legal drinking age is a thing rarely found, and his slider is top-notch. Once he gets his change going, he'll be unstoppable.

R Rick Jackson, #50, 35- Once a Long Reliever who got spot starts, Jackson has a high-80s 2-seamer as his out pitch and usually throws that, a low-70s curve, and a knuckle curve in the high 60s. Nobody knows why he bothered learning two curveballs, but he has, and he's a starter on the national team, so should you care?

RELIEF
R Drew Gilson Jr., long relief- 16, #49- Yes, Drew49 is here. The sixteen-year-old phenom sports mid-nineties heat with movement and can hit 98 on a flat fastball. His sliders top out at 85, and his out pitch cutter is about as fast.

L Nick Carter, Lefty Specialist- 28, #73- Lefties can't hit his low-80s sinker. Most people can hit his mid-80s fastball (besides lefties who are thinking sinker)

L Aaron Raymond/R Alex Carson- Middle Relievers
Raymond- #53, 27: Aaron Raymond features a low-90s 2-seamer and great control. Has gone through four breaking balls looking for the right one and can throw all four to keep you off balance- curveball, slider, cutter, and splitter.
Carson- 27, #59: Alex Carson has the same 2-seamer and same control. However, he has a good mid-80s slider and that's it.

L Tomas Reynolds/L Evan Daye/R Bobby Fritz- setup men
Reynolds- #52, 21: A star from the U-18 team has arrived with his blazing 96-mph fastballs and a penchant for shoulder injuries.

Daye- #55, 31: A lefty killer, Daye has an amazing low-90s cutter. That's it. He has no injury troubles or stamina issues, but only one pitch means being whacked in the fourth inning.

Fritz- #69, 22: Another U-21 star who has since graduated from that, Fritz is a budding star in the LBL (3.21 ERA) with his curveball and slider being pro-league out pitches.

CI #34 Philip “Phil” Carter (R/R), 30 - this converted 1B now plays 3B, features defensive versatility with a strong arm and good glove, gap-to-gap power rather than long-ball power

Last time around in the IBS, New Wolfopolis was the co-host, along with Super-Llamaland. They took third place after a crushing defeat to friendly rival Nova Anglicana in the semifinals. This time, the Wolfpack is back, with a larger field of participating teams, but just as much desire to win. In the most recent international baseball competition, World Baseball Classic 28, New Wolfopolis claimed third place with a 5-5 record in what would be known as the "group of death," which included teams like Saugeais, Zwangzug, and Qazox. This was not as good of a finish as their last classic, but an encouraging one, as they played with considerably more difficult teams. Their main issue was in the bullpen, which had to be moved around a little bit during the classic. John Lawrence seized the closer spot over Ron Larochelle, and Carl Prater took over Lawrence's spot as set-up man. This combination worked fairly well, and the Wolfpack look to test this out during IBS to better prepare for the next WBC. On the offensive side, captain Katsunori Matsuoka continues to lead the charge, after leading the team in batting average for the last two Classics. Other notable sluggers include Andre Harding, leading the team in home runs last classic, and lefty masher Maurice Martinez, the big-swingin' RBI machine. Zhenovia got a decent draw with a pair of fellow unranked teams in the Arana Mayans and the Imota Sunwings, but also have been placed with the Sova Empire Federation, who are a rather highly touted bunch.

However, head coach Lou Oliver likes his chances. "I feel like we have a good thing going. I mean, we got the best guys in our country, and baseball has really been thriving now in Zhenovia. This will be a real testament to our hard work if we can emerge as the second team or surprise everyone and emerge as the one seed from our group. I mean, our guys are amped, and they want it bad, let me tell you. It'll be a long journey to win this thing, but I think we can do it."[i]

Jakub Cervenak: [i]I think we've really been developing some great team chemistry over these past few months. Sure, we all come from different places, but baseball has really been a uniting factor for us, as has our patriotism. We want to win not for ourselves, but for our country.


Casper Hunt: Coach (Terry) Perez has been great about working with me, and with the other guys on our swings. He's helped me not only from a skill standpoint, but he's been a great mentor - he has given me confidence.

Will Falco (Strength/Conditioning Coach): I can guarantee you that there is nobody who has worked harder from an endurance standpoint than our guys. Our fitness is top notch.

Michael Andrews: What do I hope for out of this? Well, I better not be between Choi and Bishop on the plane. That's like a collective six hundred pounds. In all seriousness though, to represent my country well. I should probably go to sleep before Foxy (Joseph Fox). That guy snores like a warthog or something.

Jim liked playing Real Life. The excitement of banding into "countries", the fun of creating your "person" and their intelligence, creativity, athleticism, and productivity scores. It was such a fun game, and your nations could do things on the forums. So much fun.

Jim logged onto Real Life and immediately checked the doings of his "country", a band of 22 made up of his friends and a spattering of random people he met on the game. Real Life was so much fun. His name was "Bill Smith", and he could do anything.

He lived in Super-Llamaland, a nice nation besides the tax rates, beautiful and well-educated and drug-free. Besides medical drugs, of course. But Real Life let him escape into another world.

There was a BZORP-ing noise, and Jim was sucked into Real Life. The bright, non-computer generated graphics dazzled him. He had turned into his character, Bill Smith: with the brown hair and green eyes and light skin and an Overall Profile Score of 157.50/200, something he was very proud of. He was so different.

He looked around. He was lying down, and his friends in his region were as well. Looking around the virtual fences of the nation, he realized that everybody who had played Real Life was now in the game, even those who had made jokes of their people and made them blind with terribly low scores. Those people were staggering around in a horrible manner.

Bill wondered how long it would last.

Gregoryisgodistan prepares for first ever host role

In just 24 short hours, the International Baseball Slam IV will commence, and with it the road to Gregoryisgodistan will begin. After many strange bids that stood no real chance of winning, including one which proposed World Cup soccer be played on a moving airplane, Gregoryisgodistan has finally put forth a respectable bid, and has won the rights to host IBS IV.

According to Lord Almighty Gregory, "This is a glorious day for Gregoryisgodistan. We will welcome the world to our beloved nation and show them true Gregoryisgodistani harmony. Welcome to the world. Welcome to the greatest country on Earth."

Most laws will be suspended for foreign visitors, enabling them to do actions that would ordinarily result in execution. For instance, no guest team or player will be executed for saying "coconut" or eating things besides prune juice and gruel rations. However, some crimes such as murder, assault, rape, and theft will still be illegal. These crimes are all ordinarily punishable by death but may simply result in immediate deportation during the tournament.

The group stage will not be played in Gregoryisgodistan, except for three Bat Slave home games, which will all be played in Lord Almighty Gregory Baseball Stadium. From the quarterfinals onward, all matches will be played in Gregoryisgodistan and the world will flock to the nation.

The Bat Slaves' first game will be at Lzherusskia tomorrow night. They will then travel to Unolia before playing three straight at home against Jeckland, Lzherusskia, and Unolia. Finally, they will play a road game in Jeckland. Gregoryisgodistan is heavily favored to win its group, with Unolia expected to come in second.

Singer SLJKW74 to sing Bat Slaves theme song during TV broadcasts

Singer SLJKW74, former contestant in the WorldVision competition, has been selected to sing the Bat Slaves' theme song at the beginning of every broadcast of Gregoryisgodistan's baseball games. Following his strong performance of "Gregory, God of the Multiverse" in WorldVision 29, he was an obvious choice, according to Music Director David Cubert. For those who forgot, the theme song goes like this:

It is also rumored that Singer SLJKW74 will make an album featuring an extended version of the theme song following the International Baseball Slam. This could be done in the leadup to the next World Baseball Classic.

Scouting Reports
Yoshifumi Shameimaru: Contact, speed, and stolen bases have always been the name of the game for this agile infielder. While power has never been his strong suit, his sure glove, good arm, and keen judgment in the field have always been assets to the team.

Hayato Yagami: This veteran has all five tools, experience at nearly every position, and the lightning relexes and steely nerves needed to thrive in the hot corner. Now that he's finally earned a spot in the starting line up, he's determined to finally get Imota past the group stage.

Yasuhiro Chadani: The stereotypical slow but powerful slugger. Very aggressive at the plate, and despite losing some power with age, he is still one of Imota's most productive sluggers.

Akio Homura: A veteran five-tool outfielder who's been with the Sunwings since their first Classic campaign in WBC 27. Coming off one of his best seasons yet, he's determined to make this Imota's time.

Naoto Takamachi: An aging five-tool player on probably his last international run. While he's lost some power and speed with age, this wily outfielder has a keen eye for judging pitches and fly balls, and still has some pop in his bat yet.

Kiyohiko Sakurai: Another stereotypical slow lefty slugger first baseman. While he can send pretty much anything out of the park if he gets a good enough piece of it, critics say he's lost some contact since WBC 28.

Saki Lilienthal: Since her international debut in WBC 28, Saki might not have learned much humility, but she has matured into a relatively decent five-tool player. Now if only she would stop chasing low and away...

Riki Naoe: A veteran catcher with solid defense and a powerful and accurate throwing arm - behind the plate. At the plate, the only thing he's really good for is bunting.

Yuzuki Shimizu: A five-tooler in the making, with decent contact and a good glove. Not a lot of power yet, but she's quick and has a keen eye.

Fumio Otonashi: Despite having all five tools, he's a very streaky player and tends to choke in clutch situtations. Will appearing in the Slam help prepare him for Classic 29? Only time will tell.

Haruki Kamio: An agile and experienced infielder who has good contact but not a lot of power. Good as a defensive sub, pinch hitter, or pinch runner.

Nagi Touno: Like Kamio, an experienced infielder who lacks power but makes up for it with speed, contact, and fielding. An all-around solid sub.

Senjirou Ushiromiya: A former catcher who's nominally listed as an outfielder, but is most often used for pinch-hitting. Despite a powerful bat and good contact, he's really only an average fielder.

Satoshi Houjou: A versatile outfielder who's been moved to the bench, but still has the skill in the field to challenge the best of them. Predominantly used as a defensive substitute.

Chie Yakumo: An energetic young catcher who's added some pep to her batting, but still has a long way to go in that department. Her defense and arm are as good as ever.

Eiji Miki: Considered Imota's best for a long time, and for good reason. With a triple digit four-seam fastball, wicked slider, mind-boggling curveball, superb change-up, and fifteen years of experience facing and besting Imota's finest sluggers, Miki once again enters international play intent on bringing home the championship.

Makoto Kikuchi: Having worked out most of the kinks in his control and off-speed pitches, this formerly wild fireballer has settled in with a productive four-seam fastball/slider/changeup repetoire.

Shinobu Tsukimura: An off-speeder who backs up a lefty-slaying curveball with a formidable Vulcan changeup. Arguably the best control pitcher in the starting rotation.

Nozomi Itoshiki: Primarily relies on her four-seam fastball and slider. Has stabilized in recent years, but her curveball still needs a lot of development.

Sakuya Izayoi: This young fireballer may be one dimensional, but with a two-seam fastball that hits triple digits with more than incidental frequency as well as pinpoint control and a keen mind for pitch placement, it's a very impressive one dimension.

Ouka Kamishiro: Considered a starter in the making, this young fireballer makes a lot of hay with her repetoire of fastballs. However, her control is iffy, and she noticably degrades with runners on base.

Rinnosuke Natsume: Notorious for terrible luck during WBC play, this veteran starter has been moved to the bullpen. His two-seam fastball and curveball are still lethal as ever.

Issei Tsumuhana: An off-speeder who mainly relies on his sinker. Though very difficult to hit, his balls often wind up embedded in the fence when hitters do make contact.

Himeko Yaegashi: Despite excellent control and good speed on her two-seam fastball, this hard-working rookie's reluctance to trust her fielders means that she often overworks herself and walks a lot of batters while going for strikeouts. Some sportswriters say that if she can fix her attitude without hurting her work ethic, she could become the next Eiji Miki.

Arahiko Inui: A notoriously dim fireballer who took a lot of flak for poor performance in WBC 28. Will he vindicate himself or crash in disgrace?

Shirou Emiya: At 40, Emiya is the oldest player on the team, and this experience combined with a curveball that leaves lefties flailing makes him an asset to the team. Not very powerful, though, and rarely breaks 80 MPH.

Hikaru Shidou: Considered a closer in the making. His slider/curveball combination rarely allows hits, but a careful batter can drive up his pitch count and draw a walk.

Makoto Kaname: Age may have taken some speed off his split-fingered fastball, but it's also brought his slider to the fore and hasn't hurt his strikeout numbers any. An experienced and stable closer who rarely makes mistakes.

This year sees considerable changes to the Sunwings lineup: Ken Urofuchi is no longer managing, having taken on a new job as the Culture Ministry's Head of Baseball. The lineup has also seen changes, with a total of seven female players on the roster, and with several retired players now taking up coaching positions.

The Sunwings will start in Group C, which they share with fellow unranked teams Arana and Zhenovia, as well as The Sova Empire. While some analysts expect TSE to easily win the group, the competition for the second spot is murkier: with three unranked teams gunning for it, no one really knows how this battle will develop. Zhenovia has a good team, to be sure, but will their news service provide sufficient support? Only time will tell.

The first game is set for tomorrow, when the Sunwings host TSE at the Imperial Sun Dome. After that, it's a trip to Arana to take on the Mayans, followed by another home game against Zhenovia. There will be a one day break, followed with a trip to TSE, a home game against Arana, capped off with a road date with Zhenovia. With just six games over seven days, the group stage will have plenty of excitement, with every game having the potential to be a make or break contest. Let's hope that, when all's said and done, it's the Sunwings standing tall and proud at the end.

Lillard: "Good evening, and welcome to this very special edition of Wolfpack Baseball Live. Today, we're looking at the International Baseball Slam. I'm joined by new members of the Wolfpack Baseball Live team, Megan Richmond, and Michael Murphey. We're visited by our normal game commentators as well, Richard Larmon and Elizabeth DeWald. All of us will be looking at each group, and making our previews. Let's start with group A.

"Group A includes the Gregoryisgodistan Bat Slaves, ranked #1 in the tournament and selected to host, the Unolia National Team, favored for second, and the Jeckland National Team and Lzherusskia Terzada, both unranked."

Richmond: "The Bat Slaves are definitely going to finish first. I'll take the sleeper of Terzada for second place."

Murphey: "Yeah, Bat Slaves, no question, but I like Unolia better than Lzherusskia."

Larmon: "I have a feeling we're all picking the Bat Slaves as first, but I've also got Unolia coming in second."

DeWald: "Yup, Gregoryisgodistan, definitely first, and I've got Jeckland in second."

Lillard: "Alright, now we take a look at group B. The Nova Anglicana Lions, third ranked in the tournament and friendly rival of the Wolfpack, Llamaland Tigers, founder and two-time co-host of IBS, Lunar Republic Islands and San Jose Guayabal, both unranked."

Richmond: "I'll be boring and take Nova Anglicana first, Llamaland second."

Murphey: "Ooh, I don't know, Llamaland has fire from their WBC win just this last classic, I like them first and the Lions second."

Larmon: "Nova Anglicana first, and I'll be weird and pick Lunar Republic Islands second. They've got a good baseball team. Look at their practice footage. They're good, I tell ya."

DeWald: "Alright, but I agree with Mr. Murphey, I've got Llamaland first and Nova Anglicana second."

Lillard: "Okeydokey, quite a bit of difference there, now we'll preview group C. The Sova Empire, the only ranked team in the group, and second in the tournament, matched up against Zhenovia, Arana, and Imota, the unranked. Who ya got?"

Richmond: "TSE first, they've got good history in the IBS, and Imota second. I was impressed with their style of play during the last two Classics."

Murphey: "I'm probably the weird one this time, I've got Imota first and Zhenovia second."

Larmon: "You're not that weird. Imota first, TSE second."

DeWald: "I'm boring this time, the Sovans first, Zhenovia second."

Lillard: "Another group with a lot of disagreement. Interesting. Now we move on to Group D. Our own Wolfpack, fourth-ranked in the tournament and third-place finish last time, against the Royal Barangay Indios, the only other team with IBS experience, the Ko-oren Dragonflies and St. Martin's, from New Koln. Who ya got?"

Richmond: "Can't bet against the Wolfpack here! NW first, Ko-oren second."

Murphey: "Yeah, I think the Wolfpack should be able to cruise through here pretty well unscathed. Second will be tough, but I'll go with TRB."

Larmon: "Hate to do this, but I think the Wolfpack will choke. Indios first, Wolfpack second."

DeWald: "No way, Rich! Wolfpack first, Ko-oren second."

Lillard: "Thanks for your input, guys. One more question: who do you think will win it all and who will be their key player?"

Richmond: "Gregoryisgodistan will win, their key player: the tenth man. They've got the home crowd behind them."

Murphey: "Mmm, I think Llamaland will take the cake, with Bryant Moreno, huge-hitting and really pretty much doing everything catcher, leading the charge."

Larmon: "I've got Nova Anglicana, and Kareem Al-Aniz will be their key player."

DeWald: "I'll slightly be the homer here and say the Wolfpack will win. Katsunori Matsuoka is fired up for this one, and ready to captain the hell out of it."

New Identity, Same Team: Indios look to break International Baseball Slam duck with progression from the group stages

Their new colors were unveiled.

Starting this season of the International Baseball Slam, the newly-renamed Royal Barangay Indios look to establish themselves as one of the contenders for the upcoming tournament in Gregoryisgodistan. But before they could ever set foot in one of the multiverse's most avoided nations, they have to navigate through the group stage that looks tougher than ever imagined. Group D of the IBS IV will feature the New Wolfopolis Wolfpack, The Ko-oren Dragonflies and St. Martin's of New Koln.

The Indios will face the Dragonflies first. This team is relatively new to the Slam, but is a proven contender in the big one. They placed fourth in World Baseball Classic 26, the edition where The Royal Barangay made their debut as Sangti. Pundits predict it will be a close game, with the Dragonflies hoping to use their homefield advantage in the first game between these sides to beat the Indios. They will go back to the capital to welcome the Wolfpack, who are one of the favorites to win the competition. However, The World Number One Team will show its willpower to make things difficult for the Wolfpack. After that, they will go to New Koln to face St. Martin's. This is an unknown team, but the more unknown the team, the more unpredictable it is. So the Indios better be wary to avoid an upset. They will then face Ko-oren, New Wolfopois and St. Martin's again to round up the schedule.

Barangayan fans are hoping that the Indios could end their IBS duck that taints its high reputation. See you in around two days in Ko-oren.

Baseball isn't a very high scoring game, and Imota's traditionally favored style in particular emphasizes contact, base running, and defense over slugging. As such, despite generally playing well, the national team has a relatively low run total and a 8-10 record in international play.

Make that 9-10. In a surprising show of pep from Imota's batsmen (and women), the Sunwings jumped ahead with five runs in the first and never looked back. Six Sunwings batters reached base in the first with five of them crossing the plate before The Sova Empire's defense could muster three outs, and later home runs by Yasuhiro Chadani and Akio Homura were the icing on this delicious victory cake. On the mound, ace Eiji Miki was in top form, going all nine frames while fanning sixteen and allowing just one run on four hits and one walk.

Imota's next game will be on the road against Arana, who beat Zhenovia 7-6 today thanks to a three-run walk-off rally in the ninth. Makoto Kikuchi will start.
