Groups Drawn For World Hoops Showcase; Lzherusskia Given "Every Chance Of Success"
COCO BAY, TAIJAN: After seeing the groups drawn for the upcoming World Hoops Showcase, Lzherusskia captain Milo Zotijasnov was dismissive of the opposition his team will shortly be facing, and proclaimed himself "confident" that the team could pull off some shocks.
"I think, given the seeds, we couldn't have been drawn in a better group," said the 28-year-old, fresh off a championship-winning season with LKC Korzin. "I don't rate Patistan at all, I think it's ridiculous that they're as high as they are, and the longer I can avoid having to take a team that plays ponies seriously, the better."
The team selection for the tournament has been criticised in recent days, with some accusing head coach Franz Rusakov of favouritism towards the league's bigger teams, but Zotijasnov was passionate in the defense of his coach: "Franz has got nothing to apologise for in his selection. If the best teams have the best players and we want to win, then the only sensible thing to do is to pick the best players and let everybody else suck it up. Trying to force him to take inferior players just so the team's not dominated by Korzin and Vsevintseva is a dumb idea and a really stupid way to act."
The comments will not endear Zotijasnov to anybody else, but Korzin's small forward has grown used to being hated: "The fact is, people hate me because I'm a lot better than they are and they can't handle that. I'm not going to apologise for that. I've been working hard all my life to get to where I am, and I'll be damned if I let bitter and jealous people get to me. If I can help Lzherusskia win, I'm going to do it, no matter what it costs or how many people it pisses off."
The World Hoops Showcase kicks off in one week's time, and Lzherusskia will start their campaign against the seventh-seeded Patistan, about whom Zotijasnov said "They're just not a good team. I think the only reason they're rated at all is because they've been around longer than we have, so it's not really going to be much of an upset when we come out on top. I'm going to be disappointed in myself if I can't drop at least 25 on them personally."
Other teammates were more diplomatic in their comments. Dominik Brechkovsky, point guard for the title-winning Korzin team who is widely expected to start for Lzherusskia as well, said "Look, I love Milo and his intensity, but he can be a complete bonehead sometimes. I don't know if he doesn't realise or just doesn't care, but he's just given Patistan a lot of bulletin board material. They're going to be fired up next week, and I think everybody we face is going to want to shut Milo up."
When asked for his prediction, however, Brechkovsky was just as confident as his teammate: "I do think Milo's right in one aspect. We're a better team than our lack of ranking says we are, and we're also a wildcard. People don't know what we're capable of, what we'll be like to face tactically or what our strengths and our weaknesses are, and that will play in our favour. I don't think we're going to win, but I do think we can at least make it out of the group stages.

The World Hoops Showcase was announced yesterday and the LRI was placed in the Group E.
Group E (Karl van Doren Fieldhouse, St. Jermaine)
The Andromeda Islands (1)
The Lunar Republic Islands (15)
Texacano
United Republic
The LRI is ranked 15th in the world, and has the number 1 team in the tournament in the group that they must defeat, the Andromeda Islands. Texacano and the United Republic are also in this group. Here's Coach Rick Coltino on playing the Andromeda Islands,
"I think it's good that we have the #1 ranked team because now we can show off who we really are. We're playing the #1 team and win or lose, it helps us for the future. But we're gonna go out there and we will win that tournament!" He excitedly said.
"Should be exciting, we're 15th ranked and we got the #1 ranked team in our Group and we will beat them. We gotta play hard and play close with them. Plus there's other games to worry about. But I think we can pull it off." Captain David Padgett said.
