General Information

The Sarian is an interesting nation, located in Esportiva, one of the three big sporting regions on Nationstates, it is a constitutional monarchy, the Head of State being King William VII and the Head of Government being the Prime Minister David Fox. The Sarian has a five-tier legislature system, and the current ruling party is a national coalition formed after the outbreak of the ongoing war with the Free Republics. The Sarian's War with the Federation of Free Republics began after the Free Republics invasion of a Sarian jail to release a known rapist. (OOC: Turned out he was innocent.)

Sporting wise, The Sarian are fairly new. However, after finishing second in the most recent edition of the Baptism of Fire, The Sarian Sports Secretary, John Lloyd has been launching many new national teams, including the Lacrosse team.

The tournament will be based in the City of Setter, which is in the Province of Oakhurst.

Stadia

Image

Oakhurst Stadium
Capacity: 30,007 | City: Setter| Province: Oakhurst

The largest purpose built lacrosse stadium in The Sarian, the Oakhurst Stadium, will be the main stadium of the tournament. Home to the Sarian Lacrosse Champions, Setter, this stadium is expected to be packed every game by thousands of patriotic Sarians wanting to see The Sarians first international tournament.

Host to: Groups D, H; Matches 1, 8 (R16); Match 1 (QF); Final

Image

Somerset Stadium
Capacity:19,802 | City: Darwin | Province: Porshmap

Although in an area where lacrosse isn't widely played, every pre-sold ticket to this stadium has been sold out. The stadium is home to the Darwin Dutchounds, however they are looking to expand the stadium, and the World Cup has halted this progress. Angry protests were planned for the cup by the official supporters club, but under intensives by the Sarian Lacrosse Organization, it was called off.

Host to: Groups B, G; Matches 2, 7 (R16); Match 2 (QF + SF)

Image

Spirit of Legacy Arena
Capacity: 23,983 | City: Gorgona| Province: Kensingtea

In the second of the 'Lacrosse regions' in The Sarian, The Spirit of Legacy Arena is home to the Legacy Leopards. However, transport is sketchy in this region due to recent storms and organizers fear that this could lead to delays to officials, players or spectators.

Host to: Groups C, F; Matches 3, 6 (R16); Match 3 (QF); Match 1 (SF)

Image

Queen Priscilla Stadium
Capacity: 43,983 | City: King William City| Province: Regis

The final arena to be chosen for the tournament was the stadium of 'the canaries', the home of Lacrosse in the capital. Not a full time Lacrosse stadium, the park is mostly used as a Rugby Union stadium. Visitors to the stadium will be cheered on by the rowdy capital crowds.

Host to: Groups A, E; Matches 4, 5 (R16); Match 4 (QF); Third Place Match

RP Injuries: Nothing beyond game-ending. I make the call beyond that. TG for permission first, preferably.
GodMod Injuries: Nothing beyond game-ending. TG for permission first.

Personnel

Coaching & Administrative

General Manager: Joseph Sturgis (Age: 34) - Joe Sturgis spent a number of years on the Volunteers playing under Frank McDowell before moving on to the domestic league. Meanwhile, Sturgis took numerous management classes at Thomasburg State University, and engaged in some amateur player management on the side, so when he retired at 33, he moved into a General Manager's role with the Volunteers. Although it's still a little early for a verdict on his performance, it seems that he's been good about making sure the team's players are taken care of well, as well-compensated as can be with the team's budgetary constraints, and well-represented.

Head Coach: Frank McDowell (Age: 46) - Frank McDowell has been the head coach of the Volunteers since they made their international debut in WLC 6. Since then, he's presided over a team that's made five finals appearances, winning two of them before the team lost funding following WLC 13. McDowell tends to espouse an aggressive, high-scoring approach, utilizing physical play to keep opponents off-balance, open up scoring opportunities, and reduce opponents' opportunities.

Offensive Assistant: Erika Shoenburg (Age: 30) - Following a devastating knee injury the previous year, Shoenburg took an early exit from her playing career in order to get a jump on beginning a career in coaching. Her first job is as the Volunteers' offensive assistant coach, helping to develop the large number of rookie forwards and midfielders.

Defensive Assistant: Slava Hendricks (Age: 33) - Hendricks became an assistant coach for the Volunteers last year after she hung up her cleats, and has since spent a lot of time helping to develop the large number of rookie defenders and midfielders, as well as installing general defensive plays and strategy for the team.

Roster

Goalkeepers

GK#08 - Leopold Fuchs (6'0", 216lbs, Age: 33) - The Volunteers' veteran goalie is one of a handful of players that remain with the team after WLC 13. If he's lost some of his youthful vigor and some of his tendency to make spectacular saves with it, it's been replaced by veteran canniness; it's safe to say that Fuchs now plays smarter, if not always better. As the Vols train up a young goalie prospect, they'll lean on Fuchs to keep the net clear.

GK#04 - Sheila Waalturs (5'5", 130lbs, Age: 26) - Waalturs is not as technically-skilled as Fuchs, but she makes up for it by being younger and having a little more natural talent. Not that she's unskilled by any means, but Waalturs has the unfortunate tendency of being a little streaky, at times not even allowing the most on-target shots to go through, and at times struggling even with somewhat off-target shots.

GK#11 - Lorraine Myers (5'6", 136lbs, Age: 19) - Coming out of Thomasburg West City College, Myers is probably the best goalie prospect in the Allamunnic States (granted, out of a rather thin group of lacrosse players). Myers is about as raw and inexperienced as it comes, but she possesses what can only be called the proverbial 'nose for the ball'. She's got the talent, it'll be left to coaching and veterans to teach her how to be consistent.

Defenders

LD#45 - Erik Jurgensun (6'1", 232lbs, Age: 20) - Jurgensun is a young, new addition who is built in the mold of the typical Allamunnic defender. As young as he is, Jurgensun's stick-handling skills are still rather unrefined, and he tends to use his size and build as a bit of a crutch. With any luck, coaching and help from the unit's veteran will help him become a more-complete player.

MD#49 - Ryan Oslo (6'0", 224lbs, Age: 33) - Oslo is the physical and sturdy veteran who anchors the Vols' defense. Although one would expect his main assets to be physicality, his stick-handling skills are deceptively strong, meaning he's an all-around solid, reliable defender. The only place his game has suffered is that as he's aged since WLC 13, he's not as fast and explosive as he used to be, meaning he tends to hang back even when the team is on the attack, playing a supporting role spreading the ball around rather than attacking.

RD#40 - Karrin Connolly (5'6", 124lbs, Age: 27) - The last time the Vols played internationally, Connolly was a reserve defender, used to give a change of pace. These days, she serves as a more offensively-oriented defender, primarily focused on forcing turnovers, swatting down passes, and getting the ball back up-field. She lacks the same physicality that Oslo and Jurgensun, which means sufficiently-physical attackers might be able to exploit the weakness in coverage on the defense's right, but she's still a plenty-competent defender in her own right.

DR#42 - Daanyl Baaltrsunn (6'2", 222lbs, Age: 17) - Baaltrsunn is the youngest of the three rookie reservist defenders who will be learning the ropes this year. Baaltrsunn is fresh out of high school, but has the build and nose for the ball that could make him an elite defender once he's received some coaching and mentoring from older players.

DR#46 - Waldr Karlsunn (6'3", 231lbs, Age: 20) - Karlsunn is the oldest of the three rookie reservists and, as is usually the case with such things, the most polished of them. Karlsunn has flashed potential indicating that he'll be a good all-around player with some experience and mentoring, and he's got the build and skills to be a classic, physical, Allamunnic defender.

DR#44 - Graagur Maarks (6'3", 227lbs, Age: 19) - Having finished his associate's degree, Maarks has left school to pursue professional lacrosse. Maarks seems to have the innate talent to be a game-changing defender, if he can cut out the rookie mistakes and learn to be a more skilled, technical player rather than one who relies on raw talent.

Midfielders

LM#20 - Izaak Sturgis (6'1", 220lbs, Age: 30) - Sturgis returned to the national team after the National Lacrosse League folded and wasted no time resuming a share of the leadership role the Sturgis brothers once held on the team. Sturgis took his place as a midfielder due to the crowded front, and he adds some great veteran leadership and experience to the unit, and he still flashes the same athletic ability he did in his first go-round with the team. Expect Sturgis to also play a major role in training the younger players on the team.

CM#32 - Zak Mueller (6'4", 228lbs, Age: 30) - Towering Zak Mueller is a veteran of the Volunteers' successes, having been with the team since WLC VI. Mueller, besides just being tall, is a sturdily-build man, and his long arms allow him to whip a lot of force on shots and passes, making him hard to stop when he's on-target. Long legs and still being at the tail-end of his prime mean Mueller can also keep up with all but the fastest opponents, and he's a complete overall player in the Volunteers' crucial midfield.

RM#30 - Haanryk Thursunn (6'2", 235lbs, Age: 27) - Thursunn was still a reservist the last time the Volunteers played in an international competition, but over the last few years, he's stepped up as a leader on the team and as an impressive overall player, talented and skilled while still in his athletic prime. Although the Vols' offense is increasingly geared towards the forwards, don't be surprised if Thursunn ends up being a key contributor offensively, including on the scoreboard.

MR#33 - Elaine Ryan (5'7", 153lbs, Age: 17) - One midfielder reservist, is a brand new player, fresh out of high-school. Surprisingly physical despite her build, Ryan has skills that make her suitable to play both offense and defense. Her coaches have raved about her stick-handling, claiming it's the best they've seen in such a young player, and her athleticism and accuracy when passing and shooting make her a potentially-dangerous offensive weapon. The only wrinkle is that, at 17 and fresh out of high school, Ryan will undoubtedly face teething issues as she adjusts to international play, but that's not expected to be too much of a problem.

MR#37 - Seamus Johnson (6'1", 211lbs, Age: 20) - Another rookie reservist, Johnson has flashed less explosiveness in his college play than Ryan has, but he's made up for it by being a more polished player than his fellow reservist. Johnson's natural strengths come at controlling the middle of the field and spreading the ball out, making him a classic supporting player of the sort that the Volunteers like to have playing the center mid-fielder and center forward positions.

MR#34 - Thorin Fokkenmaar (5'11", 202lbs, Age: 18) - Fokkenmaar completes the group of rookie reservists in the Vols' midfield. Not as large as some of the other players (particularly the veterans, in many cases), Fokkenmaar makes up for lacking the usual build in male Allamunnic lacrosse players in his prodigious technical skills, being a very refined passer and stick-handler.

Forwards

LF#36 - Cassie Downing (5'8", 144lbs, Age: 27) - Downing is still right in her athletic prime, old enough to be experienced but young enough to still have youthful vitality, stamina, and explosiveness. Combine that with scary accuracy, excellent stick-handling, and a rough-and-tumble playing style completely in-keeping with Allamunnic sporting, and Downing is still easily the most dangerous single player on the Volunteers, and nobody should expect her scoring to slow with her move from midfielder to forward.

CF#15 - John Dahlgren (6'1", 218lbs, Age: 33) - Dahlgren is another long-time veteran of the Volunteers, and he, along with Downing and Sommers, helps to make the forwards the most experienced unit on the team. The only stat Dahlgren really seems to pile up on is assists, which perhaps describes him perfectly. Especially now that he's increasingly forced to play smarter rather than harder, Dahlgren's role as an enabler and fulcrum for the rest of the offense has expanded. Although he's a scoring threat in his own right, his main job is to feed the ball to Downing and Sommers and let them drive home the goals while clearing the middle of the field for them.

RF#18 - Joanna Sommers (5'8", 141lbs, Age: 29) - Explosive veteran attacker Sommers returns, along with Cassie Downing and John Dahlgren, to make the forwards the Volunteers' most-experienced unit. Sommers isn't quite as physically-talented as Downing, but again, she makes up for whatever she lacks with veteran canniness, and her accuracy is nothing to shake a stick at (pardon the pun). Along with Downing, Sommers is probably the Vols' biggest scoring threat and as long as she isn't left on an island against defenders, she should produce plenty in any given game.

FR#12 - Reinette Clausen (5'9", 155lbs, Age: 21) - Clausen has flashed potential to be an explosive scorer and all-around big-play threat, and while of a smaller build, she's roughly the normal build for Allamunnic forwards. It remains to be seen if Clausen can cut out rookie errors and become a more consistent player, but if she's able to make the necessary changes, the rookie out of Northwatch State could be a star in the making.

FR#10 - Melissa Tolliver (5'10", 161lbs, Age: 21) - The niece of former Volunteer Cally Tolliver, Melissa is unusually solidly-built for a female Allamunnic forward, and as athletic as she is, she puts her size to good use, playing a very physical style. Although she's still a rookie who needs to work on her accuracy, Tolliver has all the makings of a classic Center-Forward in Allamunnic style, being an offensive fulcrum to spread the ball around and threaten occasional scores.

FR#19 - Jory Klein (5'10", 203lbs, Age: 21) - Klein is a little small for a male Allamunnic player (by about two inches and twenty pounds, in fact), but he makes up for it with an explosive, aggressive playing style. While that style is unfortunately rather boom-or-bust, it does frequently put Klein in position to make big plays. He's another player that's going to need some coaching and mentoring to become more consistent, however.

Team Overview:
At one point, the Volunteers were one of international lacrosse's most-dominant teams, tallying five championship appearances (winning two of them) between the Sixth and Thirteenth World Lacrosse Championships. Four years on, that's ancient history for all intents and purposes. Lacrosse tanked domestically in the Allamunnic States. When the National Lacrosse League folded, almost all of the Volunteers' funding was lost, causing them to miss participation in the Fourteenth, Fifteenth, and Sixteenth editions of the World Lacrosse Championships. Meanwhile, the team existed in a state of unpaid limbo, playing exhibition games against local clubs.

After much pleading with Allamunnic Sporting Commissioner Hadley Thornburger, Frank McDowell managed to re-secure funding for the Volunteers, allowing them to return to proper international competition at the Seventeenth World Lacrosse Championships. The roster only bears a passing resemblance to the team that placed second at the Thirteenth Championships, but McDowell is still their commander, and most of the starters are WLC veterans, playing later in their careers and helping to train the next generation.

Stadiums:

Federal Steel Field (Thomasburg, Stalhamark, FRAS)(Capacity: 142,000) - Federal Steel Field is the largest stadium in the country, and normally plays host to the gridiron squads of the Thomasburg Ironmongers, Steelers, and Boilermakers. Thomasburg lacrosse clubs and soccer clubs also play in the modern, well-maintained facility. Teams playing here should be wary of irritating the fans; beer bottles have a way of flying out of the stands towards a team that has rubbed the home crowd the wrong way. And there will be a home crowd. A large one. Though the stadium does boast a retractable roof, look for the cold-loving Allamunnae to leave it open, even during the chilly early spring.

The Royal Arena (Koenigshalloe, Ostlund, FRAS)(Capacity: 140,000) - Just smaller than Federal Steel Field (and boy do they know it), the Royal Arena sometimes is known as the Haaldstadt pleasure dome; if there is a more beautiful and shiny stadium in the country, it's hiding itself well. The Arena serves as the home for Koenigshalloe's royally-sponsored teams, who are almost all called "The Kings" (or some variation thereof). One of only a few stadiums in the country with a roof at all, the Arena's enclosed spaces will ensure that games take place in regular conditions here.

Jeckland Ready For Lacrosse Debut

Postby Jeckland » Fri Jan 03, 2014 1:12 am

1st January 2014

Ding-Dong!
The man went to get the door. He opened it to find a postman holding a package from Amazon. "Sign here" he said, and the man obliged. Shutting the door, he turned to find his eight year old son bouncing down the stairs. "Is it here?" he cried. "Yes" replied the man, tearing open the package for his son.

The boy ran into the family playroom, where his new Sony PS4 was. He turned it on and inserted the brand new disc. After a minute or so, the game has loaded. He switches it on. It is World Lacrosse Championships 17.

The boy, like the majority of Jeckland, doesn't know much about lacrosse. But the boy, like the majority of Jeckland, is very interested in lacrosse at the moment. For lacrosse represents Jeckland's first venture into international sporting competition. Nobody really knows why they have not been involved for so long, but they haven't. And now they have entered into the world of lacrosse with the full support of a nation behind it.

Of course, they are minnows, and are not expected to do well. However, they are determined to cause an upset.

2nd January

"Hello everybody and welcome to the draw for World Lacrosse Championships 17, live from the Sarian"

The event has drawn a massive TV audience in Jeckland. They watch tensely as the draw is made.

"Group F. First team, Jeckland."
"Second team, Britonisea"
"Thirdly, Cosumar"
"And last butnot least, Thatius"

Jeckland is ready. Let the lacrosse begin.

Harris Names Lineup For Game 1, Hammer Surprise Inclusion

Postby Jeckland » Fri Jan 03, 2014 10:22 am

January 3rd
Cameras flash as First Team Manager of Jeckland Maxwell Harris enters the press conference, followed by team captain Eric Friar. The 25-year old attacker takes a seat to the left of his boss.

"Maxwell" says a journalist from the Daily Jeck "Any ideas on who will be in the team tomorrow"

Maxwell has never seen so many journalists. He is nervous, but tries to remain cool as he answers the question.

"Yes" he says "in fact, I will name the team now". The journalists mutter amongst themselves, this is an unexpected turn of events.

Harris reads the following team out:

GK: James Steerman
RD: Darren Keane
CD: Mitchell Hammer
LD: Matt Keane
RM: Jobi Abode
CM: Walter Williams
LM: Dominic Street
RA: Joe Kiwinuka
CA: Eric Friar (C)
LA: Ian Gove

All is as expected, except one name: Mitchell Hammer. People were so sure that it was between Lothar Gerschwitz and Tommy Ponyton-Jones to play in defence alongside the Keane twins. For a new manager in his first major press conference, Harris handles the barrage of questions and criticism of his team selection remarkably well.

He explains that Hammer has shown a lot in training and in recent Jeckland Lacrosse Championship matches and that he firmly believes Hammer is capable of performing at this level. When asked if has was concerned about the lack of experience in his defence, he simply replied "Well everyone in this team is an international debutant, aren't they?" which raises a few chuckles. Harris is starting to feel at ease with the media.

The next question asked to him is about the captain, Eric Friar, aged only 25. Although widely regarded as by far the star player on the Jeckland team, some sections of the media are questioning whether such a young player should be captain when he has several more experienced players to pick from. Harris once again answers well, explaining that Friar captains in the JLC whereas most of his older colleagues do not, and also adding that age is not always an indicator of leadership qualities. Then Friar butts in "It's because of my beard" whilst stroking his defining facial hair. The reporters laugh. Friar it seems, is as comfortable in front of a microphone as the man on his right.

When the prolific attacker is asked how morale is amongst the squad, he says that everyone is feeling pumped up, if a bit nervous.

The final question is directed at both of them, but it is Maxwell Harris who answers

"How well do you think you will do in this competition?"

"Look, we are underdogs and we know that, but this sort of thing has happened in the past and who is to say it won't happen again? We are not really setting targets for ourselves in terms of how far we will go in the competition, all we want to do is our best and make Jeckland proud, and maybe spring a surprise"

We were surprised at Maxwell Harris' team selection. We were surprised at how well he and Friar handled the media. Will we be surprised at how his team fare in this tournament?

Record Drought Doesn't Slow the Game Down in the Serbian Empire

It's been a long time since it's rained in Nis and to be honest one would expect the surface that the Serbian Empire plays lacrosse on to be damaged. However, the recent updates to the stadium where lacrosse and football (of the round variety) has improved the surface to field turf. The synthetic surface doesn't need watering and the dry spell that has been seen on the east side of the Dry Mountain (Suva Planina) has gone of for a month and a half. Field turf has been advantageous for the Serbian Empire athletes as we no longer need to fear the surface below the feet is unsuitable for play or practice. As for Jeckland, they failed to note the Serbian Empire actually won the World Lacrosse Championship 14 as an unranked entry who on their debut never lost a match. The history of the tournament has been a wild and unpredictable one.

"I'm fully expecting us to have some teething issues," McDowell said, making eye-contact with the reporter who'd asked the question. "You don't just come back from a three-year hiatus from international competition and not make some mistakes. That said, we haven't exactly been idle these last three years, so I think Allamunnae can expect us to mount another strong campaign. Championship-caliber? We'll see. But many of the players on this team have won championships before, so it won't be from lack of experience if we don't."

Seeing McDowell back up in front of the podium giving the press-conference only served reminder for many in the crowd of reporters just how young the man had been when he'd lead the Volunteers to the finals for the first time. Eleven years on, he was only in his mid-forties and already one of the more accomplished coaches in international lacrosse.

A young but veteran coach, leading a team that had won two championships in five finals appearances. Those were lofty expectations to live up to, but here was that coach, assuring the public that the Volunteers were up to the task. Many doubted it anyway, given that the Vols had spent the last three years playing competition no stiffer than the handful of independent lacrosse teams in the Federation, or the handful of even smaller and weaker international programs in Tyrrhenia. Not exactly championship-caliber opponents.

"Any more questions?" the coach asked the crowd. He took the momentary silence as an opening. "Well, in that case, make sure you folks turn out to our first game. I'm sure you'll have plenty more questions afterward. Good night." Before anyone could stop him, he ducked out the door.

He was greeted by the rest of the coaching and management staff for the team as he escaped the press-conference. Every time he looked at the staff, he had a weird feeling, thinking about the fact that all of them had played for him as Volunteers at one point. Joe Sturgis, their new general manager, Slava Hendricks, the defensive assistant coach, and Erika Shoenburg, the assistant offensive coach. It always made him remember what other people said about the Volunteers: "It's McDowell's team, through-and-through."

They had a point. Even as young as he was, a lack of strong domestic interest combined with his success at the international level had allowed McDowell to begin building his own coaching tree. Although only a handful of independent lacrosse clubs persisted in the Allamunnic States (although the number was slowly recovering, enough to hope that one day a proper league might be re-formed), at least half of those now had coaches or front-office people who had either played or worked for (and been mentored by) McDowell. Art Sturgis was now coaching Thomasburg's club, Cally Tolliver was actually the general manager for Koenigshalloe (no mean feat, either), and Walter Marsh was the head coach of Northport's club. Nobody doubted that that number would grow.

But today would begin another challenge for McDowell: returning a team that had been absent for three years to the top. It was sure to be an interesting campaign.

Anditia is ready for the WLC

Postby Anditia » Fri Jan 03, 2014 5:37 pm

Rudy Tabata - THE SARIAN
There are a lot of young sticks in Anditia and despite that, the expectations are sky high. The Verines have played, have been prepping for international competition following the end of the indoor lacrosse season in Anditia. With adding some depth to both ends of the field as well as to replacing some retired veterans who decided not to return to the national team hopes are high but tentative. Usually, the infusion of so much youth raises questions about experience. But the Verines have done this before and managed to do quite well, so that’s why the expectations heading into the World Lacrosse Championship season are higher than expected - at least in Anditia.
When asked as to strategies to prepare the young team coach Micha Mickelson said "Yeah, we have a number of youngsters, but at the same time, Ronnie Mowl should be the cool hand that keeps all of the young-guns under wraps. He's definitely a calming influence on the youngsters. Having Ty Peders in goal is also a good thing - knowing that you have a wall behind you is much better than having a sieve. I think our boys should do well - Go Red, Blue and Gold!"
